ERE in East Gippsland, between July 2022 and June this year, local police responded to almost 1,590 family violence-related calls. This ranks East Gippsland as the third highest out of Victoria’s 79 local government areas for reported incidents of family violence per 100,000 population.

Saturday 25 November is the International Day for the Elimination

of Violence Against Women and day 1 of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which is a global campaign managed by UN Women. This year, it was also the date when Gippsland Lakes Complete Health (GLCH) ran their ‘Walk to Change the Story’ event in Bairnsdale.

Walk to Change the Story is a GLCH initiative for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based

Violence. It is proudly supported by #LetsChatGippsland, Yoowinna Wurnalung Aboriginal Healing Service, 54 Reasons, Uniting, East Gippsland Shire Council, GEGAC, Lakes Entrance Aboriginal Health Association, The Orange Door, GCASA, HEY Project and FreeZa; as well as Respect Victoria.

This year’s Walk was the first in-person event since 2019 and saw

more than 300 walkers take part.

S we enter December with the timber industry to close in four weeks, Gippsland East Nationals MP, Tim Bull, has blasted the Labor State Government for its inexcusable treatment of timber families.

“As it sits, we have four weeks until the closure and the government has not provided even the most basic information, and the Premier and Minister for Agriculture are now backtracking on their commitment to meet with industry representatives, attempting to push it off to lower-level bureaucrats.

old will be included in compensation, when we have a number of harvest and haulage contractors with valuable machines over 10 years old that they cannot sell due to there now being no market.

• Machinery under 10 years old will only be compensated up to the limits of the package allocation — this needs to be uncapped to allow fair compensation.

• It is still a requirement for employers to fund the retraining of staff, when the government said it would do this.

“This was a decision made on the run that makes no environmental sense and is just Labor bowing to the Greens,” said Mr Bull.

“The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has clearly stated

building with wood is the biggest climate change mitigation measure we can take, and goes on to say we should be using a balance of plantation and native forest.

No old growth is harvested in Victoria, only regrowth.

“What is going to occur is consumers are going to keep buying hardwood because that is what they are told to do as the most effective climate change measure, but we will now have it coming from countries with less oversight, harvesting old growth that is not replanted.

“Last year, I took the time to sit down with one city Green MP to explain this and he just looked at me across the coffee table and said he could not provide an answer to that scenario, so they do not even really understand the background of what they are campaigning for,” said Mr Bull.

“About 20 years ago the Old Slipway site became vacant when a purpose-built facility was constructed at the Gippsland Ports yard in Lakes Entrance,” Mr Chester said.

“Ever since then, we have waited for the funds to restore the site into something useful for the community.

“After securing grants

from the previous Federal Government and the State Government, the transformation of the facilities has taken shape in recent months. The old winch sheds have been restored by East Gippsland Shire Council, new timber decking installed and an area set aside for food trucks which will service locals and visitors in the months ahead.

“It’s a terrific location in the centre of Lakes Entrance that is set to open before the Christmas rush, and is a good example of reactivating an old site with a new purpose in life.”

THUMBSUPTOSUPPORTAGAINST VIOLENCE FROM FRONT PAGE GLCH’S chief executive AnneMaree Kaser addressed the crowd prior to departure. She said, “According to the Australian Femicide Watch, this year, in the course of just 46 weeks, 60 women and 11 children were murdered” — a figure that does not include four more women who lost their lives to family violence in South Australia in late November.

“This is a painful and unacceptable statistic. These aren’t just numbers, they were people with friends and family, and goals and dreams. Their deaths weren’t accidental or inevitable, their lives were cut short by the active choice of another person. Their deaths were, in fact, preventable. Violence against women and their children is preventable,” she said.

Ms Kaser said ongoing research had revealed the causes of family violence are clear.

“The drivers of violence against women are disrespect towards women, rigid gender stereotypes, men feeling they should control or have power over women, and social norms and attitudes that condone this violence.”

“The research suggests that these harmful norms, attitudes and behaviours exist on a wide spectrum — meaning that sexist, disrespectful jokes and comments do matter; that put-downs and controlling behaviour do cause harm, and that these all contribute to an environment in which men’s violence against women is more likely to occur.”

Organisers Brea Nichols and Nicole Lewis from GLCH — who were also responsible for the first ever Walk in 2018 — said of this year’s event “It was a great turnout from the community. In previous years we’ve had schools attend but

since this was on a Saturday, there were predominantly families participating, which was really great to see.”

“We also had youth ambassadors speak, along with lots of support and information stalls, as well as activities such as banner making, Big Respect Gippsland Photo Booth, HEY Project t-shirt tie-dying, music with FReeZa, children's activities, Lion's Club BBQ, and the Clothesline Project,” said Nicole.

“The Clothesline Project aimed to help with the healing process of people who have experienced family violence, while also raising awareness of the extent of the problem of violence against women and children,” explained Brea. “We had locals express their feelings on t-shirts, and they were then hung on a clothesline to display them for people to read at the Walk.”

Guest speakers included East Gippsland Shire Council’s Mayor, Cr Tom Crook, and local youth ambassadors Banjo and Juliette, who spoke about the impact of family violence on children and

“These kids experience fear, confusion, and guilt — for something they had no part in. This is an emotional burden the people supposed to be their guardians placed upon them,” Banjo said.

Juliette said family violence leaves marks that remains long after any bruising has faded, but there is cause for optimism amidst concerted and collective action.

“Together our voices are strong and loud. Together we can be heard, and we can make a difference, ending violence against women and children, for a happier

future,” she said.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence campaign runs from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, until International Human Rights Day on 10 December.

Promised nursery with 30 jobs join list of Labor failed promises THE new native nursery and 30 jobs promised for Nowa Nowa in 2020, then to be moved to Bairnsdale, will now not proceed at all, it has been revealed under questioning by Gippsland East Nationals MP, Tim Bull.

“The nursery was originally committed to Nowa Nowa by current Labor Upper House MP, Harriet Shing, over three years ago, but that was withdrawn and the government then stated it would relocate the project and its 30 jobs to Bairnsdale,” said Mr Bull.

“With nothing having been said since, I asked the Minister in March: (1) What is the exact location of the nursery?

(2) Has construction commenced and what is the approximate date for its opening?

(3) Does the Government still stand by the claim it will provide full time employment for 30 people?

“Finally, eight months later, I received a response where it said, ‘changed market conditions since the project’s inception were found to have affected the commercial viability of proceeding.

VicForests elected not to award a tender’.

“Then as if to rub salt into the wound, the response then goes on to say, ‘the Allan Labor Government is committed to the long-term sustainability of forestry in Gippsland, including through supporting the industry’s transition to wholly plantation-based supply via the flagship Gippsland Plantations Investment Program, and VicForests’ Farm Forestry Program.’

“Apart from closing down the native timber industry on January 1, parliamentary hearings this week revealed Labor’s “timber transition” into plantation is a sham.

“Back in 2017 it allocated $110 million to plant 30 million trees needed for plantation to meet demand, but last week it was revealed it has planted only 4,000 trees in the six years since that announcement.

“That’s 4,000 trees. At this rate per annum, they’ll hit their target in 7,500 years,” said Mr Bull.

“Typical Labor, making promises they do not deliver — airport rail, Geelong fast rail, electric vehicle manufacturing plant in the Latrobe Valley and the Commonwealth Games to name a few that have all been scrapped.”

Tis the ‘silly’ season... hot and cold

HE lead-up to the holiday period is often referred to as the silly season — but it is when offenders get serious; burglary rates tend to increase during the festive season.

Why? Homes around this time of year are often full of Christmas presents, so there is a lot of new merchandise to attract burglars. And sometimes people also break into houses looking to steal food and goods they need, or items they can pass on as gifts — and burglars know there's a good chance the home will be empty during the holiday season.

Burglars have said they choose houses that are easy to access, often looking out for unlocked windows and doors.

Some kind of cover is important, too. Are there large or overgrown plants they can hide behind? Are they hidden from view of main roads or neighbours?

Compensate by installing motion-detector lighting, which experts agree is a reliable deterrent to unwanted visitors.

If you have a shed, keep it

To best deter thieves, keep valuables out of sight. Garage doors should stay shut and don't leave empty cardboard boxes lying around near the bins. These empty boxes advertise your new Christmas acquisitions, and should be kept out of sight away from the kerb until bin day.

To reduce the risk of becoming a target for these undesirables, lock your doors and windows.

Continue cycle of success with more trail upgrades

EDERAL Member for Gippsland Darren Chester says all levels of government need to commit to building on the success of the $5 million East Gippsland Rail Trail redevelopment with ongoing maintenance funding and new stages.

At Saturday’s official opening of the upgraded trail at Mossiface, Mr Chester said that it hadn’t always been popular to support the project but it was already delivering social and economic benefits.

“Today’s official opening is a victory for the persistence and determination of volunteers who fought for years to secure funding for upgrades because it was hard to convince governments to back the project,” Mr Chester said.

“I remember meeting with some of the rail trail volunteers several years ago and they explained their predicament.

The State Government, which owns the old railway easement, wasn’t interested in giving them any money for improvements and the East Gippsland Shire Council was drip-feeding some small maintenance grants, because they didn’t own the land and it wasn’t their

problem.

“Fast forward a few years and I was able to convince the previous Federal Government to provide $2 million for major improvements because of the social and economic benefits of the trail.

“The volunteers leveraged that grant after the Black Summer bushfires to secure more funding for local economic recovery, and now we have a world-class off-road cycling, walking and running path.

“In total, the Federal Government has provided about $3.5 million and the State Government $1.5 million to the 100 kilometre trail which is already enjoying increased usage.

“Well done to the committee members and local contractors who delivered great value for money with new bridges, better drainage, lighting, signage, water stations and an upgraded surface.”

Mr Chester said the challenge for the future was maintaining EGRT at a high standard and expanding the network to include a link to key tourism destinations like Metung, Lakes Entrance,

Paynesville and Marlo.

“I believe we need to maintain the momentum and link EGRT to the Gippsland Lakes Discovery Trail and also provide safe cycling paths to Marlo and Paynesville,” Mr Chester said.

“As the Snowy River railway bridge project gets underway, there’s going to be more interest in cycling tourism and we need to capture the opportunity as a region.

“This is an obvious opportunity for all levels of government to work together and deliver long-term infrastructure projects with strong community backing.”

BOUT 30 per cent of Australians are being persecuted mercilessly in the drive to squeeze the economy to beat inflation.

Most of the population are either prospering or not severely affected. In combination with rampant government spending, the prosperity of this 70 per cent intensifies the required attack on the 30 per cent minority to beat inflation.

Unless we wake up to what we are doing, the sharp divisions created in society will move from political issues to the fundamental structure. The turmoil will create scars that will rank with the two world wars and the depression.

And the long-term damage created by the attack on the minority will be made worse because victims are dominated by people in the 20 and 35 age bracket. They will never forget the artificial cost of living crisis that was imposed on them.

Former ANZ director and now supplier to the builders industry, John Dahlsen, and I are deeply concerned at what is taking place and government ignorance of the damage they are creating.

We decided to come together to first describe the brutality of what is taking place and then, in a second commentary, later on, look at some of the strategies available to spread the burden of reducing inflation and lowering the cost of living.

We concluded that those of us who are coping well with the costof-living crisis should think very deeply and care for low-income earners and those under mortgage and rent stress by forcing state and federal governments to recognise

the damage their strategies cause.

We need to recognise first that Reserve Bank rate increases are a very blunt instrument in dealing with inflation. It concentrates the burden on a small group.

Those forced into crisis are not responsible for it and there is little they can do to solve it except continuing to tighten their belts.

Some fall below the poverty line.

This has little effect on inflation and the imbalance of supply and demand.

Second, governments, regulators and banks have all played a big part in boosting housing costs, making it impossible for younger people on ordinary incomes to buy a dwelling. To reverse this tragedy requires understanding of seriousness and the multitude of factors that have brought it about.

Dahlsen knows most aspects of the building industry and sees that at the core of the housing crisis is the fact that state and local governments add about 40 per cent to the cost of each dwelling in most Australian capital cities, particularly Sydney and Melbourne.

Taxes like stamp duty are a big contributor, but so are the government bureaucracies who devote their lives to delaying permits and approvals and adding costly regulations with little regard to costs.

It is particularly bad in fireravaged communities, where bureaucracies prevent recovery.

The rent crisis in many states, and particularly Victoria and Queensland, has been made worse by state politicians who introduced rules to protect tenants with no regard to the practicalities of family landlords implementing them. Stunningly, state governments put extra taxes on investment property.

Families dominate rental accommodation supply and many naturally sold their properties.

Politicians’ actions slashed supply at a time when demand was boosted by migration and the fact young people were being prevented from buying houses by interest rates and bank rules.

The popular media is dominated by stories about those being impacted by the crisis. But the media conveniently ignores the elected culprits who created it.

APRA, the federal agency that regulates banks, “risk-weights” housing loans far more favourably than business loans, so the banks gain better returns on equity by funding housing, fuelling house inflation to the detriment of business and productivity.

As a result, the four big banks have become virtual building societies, pushing funds into housing at the expense of business.

Early in 2021, Reserve Bank governor, Philip Lowe, conveyed to home borrowers that low interest rates were likely to remain until 2024 and what followed was an unprecedented mortgage lending boom dominated by either flexible rates or short-term fixed rates.

That mortgage lending boom is now at the core of mortgage stress in 2023. No one was prepared for the 13 rate rises.

The inflation that gathered momentum soon after the RBA interest rate forecast was in part caused by overseas cost rises. But it was also fanned by massive state and federal government spending, particularly on infrastructure.

The 70 per cent who were not severely impacted by the rate increases went through a period of restraint but in the main kept spending. Their spending ability created an environment where enterprises, particularly larger corporations, could raise prices.

The economic activity created by the big spending governments and the 70 per cent of the population created a large number of work opportunities via casual

employment or contracts.

Many of those under mortgage and rent stress added these work opportunities to their base income, which enables them to meet bank mortgage payments, lessening the impact of the mortgage suffering of banks.

But parts of the new 784-page industrial relations bill include nasty restrictions on contract work and casual employment.

If the legislation passes it will compound the suffering of those under mortgage and rent stress but unions will join others in the community who are benefiting from the current environment.

The federal government’s latest cut in infrastructure spending is an important first step but there are large numbers of projects partly completed. The real infrastructure need is for dwellings, including build-to-rent.

Infrastructure spending is sending the price of steel and concrete through the roof, further increasing the cost of home building and boosting inflation, increasing pressure on the Reserve Bank to raise rates.

Most of the home building taking place represents people in the 70 per cent bracket upgrading their accommodation. Rich migrants may change the game but demand for new dwellings at the lower end of the scale is very low.

Normally, rate hikes create unemployment but this time the crisis is created by employed workers not being able to cover their living costs because their real income has slumped.

As more workers demand pay rises to address the cost of living these pays rises must be passed on in prices.

If the IR bill passes then transport costs will explode further underwriting inflation.

Great expectations of Christmas Take the time to relax and find joy

Emma Woodcock Counsellor Q: Dear Emma, I don’t want Christmas to come this year. I have extended family coming to stay and closer to family have all decided that I will be the Christmas host this year. Except I work fulltime, I have kids and feel completely overwhelmed by the whole thing. If I am being totally honest, even a little resentful. How can I cope? What do I do? Where do I even begin? Can you help this stressed-out Mum? A: I understand that this time of year can bring a unique set of difficulties, it certainly can be challenging for many of us.

The stress you mentioned is real. The pressure to create the perfect holiday can be overwhelming, and I want to emphasize that it's okay to let go of perfection. Try and pause for a moment and reflect on what truly matters to you and your well-being.

It sounds like you might be carrying more than you need to here.

One way I often explain this is the difference between carrying and caring — two words that sound similar but carry an important distinction in our relationships with others and ourselves. When we talk about "carrying," it's like hoisting a backpack of responsibilities for someone else. It can feel like a bit of a weighty load. Now, enter "caring." Picture this as a warm and cozy hug of understanding, empathy, and mutual support. It's like being in a team, where we share the load and support each other.

Boundaries are an important way of helping us to care, not carry. Setting clear and healthy boundaries is not only an act of self-care

but also a way to maintain your emotional well-being.

Know that it is okay, even essential, to prioritise self-care and set realistic expectations for yourself. Here are some examples of what boundaries might sound like: • If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, it's okay to express your needs to others. For example, you might say, "I appreciate the invitation, but I need some time to recharge. I won't be able to attend this event, but I look forward to connecting at another time”.

• Make self-care a nonnegotiable priority.

Communicate to your loved ones that you need dedicated time for self-care activities, whether it's reading, taking a walk, or engaging in a hobby. Say to yourself, "I've been feeling really overwhelmed, and it's okay to ask for help or take a break. I care about my well-being, so I'm going to set realistic boundaries, take short breaks during work, and make time for activities that bring me joy”.

• If certain family dynamics cause stress, consider limiting the time spent with those individuals. You can kindly express that you have other commitments or responsibilities to attend to.

Loneliness or difficult family relationships can add an extra layer of complexity to the holiday season. I encourage you to reach out for support, whether it's from friends, other loved ones, or professionals.

Sometimes, sharing your thoughts and feelings with a trusted confidant can provide valuable insights and alleviate some of the emotional burden.

When it comes to carrying, be aware of what you say yes to, even if it is just to get things done quickly and easily. Sometimes efficiency can mask as self-reliance.

If possible, delegate tasks

and responsibilities to others. Share the workload, whether it's preparing a meal, decorating, or organizing events. Remember, you don't have to do everything alone.

And lastly, where we often slip and carry instead is with unrealistic expectations that we put open ourselves. Be mindful of the why behind your actions and try to set realistic expectations by embracing imperfection. Not everything has to be flawless, and it's okay to ask for help when needed. Remind yourself that we gather with our friends and families to reconnect with each other, not because of the amazing décor!

As you navigate through the coming weeks, I also encourage you to engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Whether it's taking a quiet walk, enjoying a favourite book, or practicing mindfulness exercises, finding moments of peace can make a significant difference in managing stress. You are allowed to take a break and reset yourself.

Remember that you are not alone, and seeking support is a sign of strength. If you feel the need to discuss these challenges further or explore coping strategies, I am here for you. My sessions are a safe space to navigate through the complexities of this season and work towards your wellbeing.

Why has the government let a Chinese-owned company hold on to its Darwin Port lease?

HE federal government’s decision to let a Chinese company hold on to its 99year lease for Darwin Port has reignited debate on Australian security, strategy and selfserving alliances.

The announcement to do nothing followed a formal departmental review into the circumstances of the 2015 deal between the then-Country Liberal Party (CLP) Northern Territory government and the Australian subsidiary of the Chinese-owned Landbridge Group. The government found that it was “not necessary to vary or cancel the lease”.

The decision also precedes an official state visit by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to China next month and coincides with ongoing negotiations between the two countries to iron out trade blocks.

So what’s in the fine print of the lease? Why is the port such hot real estate? Has the national appetite for terminating the lease changed at all since the deal was done back in 2015? What number is Albanese’s in the long line of repeat reviews? And what can

Crikey clarifies.

What were the original terms of the lease?

For the price of $506 million, a deal was first struck in 2015 between the CLP and the Shandong-based energy and infrastructure group. Landbridge was given complete operational control of Darwin Port and near complete (80%) ownership of the land at Darwin Port, commercial facilities at East Arm Wharf and the cruise ship terminal at Fort Hill Wharf.

The port is subject to a range of Commonwealth laws that Landbridge is bound by.

Why is the port of such strategic importance?

According to Landbridge, the port is the national launchpad — “northern gateway” — for Australian trade in Asia. It’s “strategically positioned” as an entry and exit point for cargo, naval vessels and commercial operations, and props up a large portfolio of offshore oil and gas projects in surrounding waters.

The port is also in close proximity to joint US and Australian defence activities.

There is no argument from the federal government that the port is a “key piece of critical infrastructure” for Australia, but the consensus from multiple departments and agencies is that forfeiting management of that to a foreign-owned company — with reported links to the People’s Liberation Army of China — presents no national security issue.

That was the position back in 2015 when the lease was first signed into effect, and it remains unchanged.

Why then launch a review?

Despite consensus from key government departments

— including Defence, Foreign Affairs, Trade, Home Affairs and Intelligence — politicians, foreign bigwigs and China hawks in the security establishment voiced concern or opposition to the foreign investment made by the CLP. In 2015, then-prime minister Malcolm Turnbull backed the NT government in its negotiations, maintaining that the Defence Department had been consulted and he was confident they “did their homework”. He said he was not concerned that thentreasurer Scott Morrison had launched a subsequent review into foreign investment rules from which the Landbridge deal was exempt.

Post October deal, then-US president Barack Obama told Turnbull on the sidelines of the 2015 APEC summit to give him a “heads-up” and “let us know next time” Australia planned to auction off key strategic assets in such close proximity to US interests.

In the years since, multiple Defence Department reviews have been conducted. ThenDefence secretary Dennis

Richardson ordered one after the contract was waived through, but it found nothing of substance to suggest the Chinese had plans to infringe on Australian national security and leverage the port lease as a spy base.

Former Defence Force chief Mark Binskin put it bluntly, declaring it would be much more cost-effective and straightforward for Chinese operatives to play spy games “sitting on a stool at the fishand-chip shop on the wharf”.

Morrison ordered another Defence Department review of the lease in 2021, which reportedly found, yet again, that there was nothing to be concerned about.

In the interim years, government successfully tinkered and tightened the rules and regulations of the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) to include state and territory commercial deals done with a foreign entity, and passed laws that gave federal government intervention powers on transactions that intersected with national security.

In 2022, Albanese used the port contract as a major campaign talking point in the lead-up to the May federal election, maintaining that “it should never have been sold to the Chinese” because of its strategic status. Should Labor assume government, he vowed to examine the lease and said he was prepared to call on federal foreign veto laws to void the contract — with the caveat that he’d “always take the advice of DFAT”.

Now who says what about the matter?

Albanese has not commented publicly on the decision. The announcement was made exclusively through a Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet media release that concluded the government had accepted the advice of the review.

In a joint Liberal Party statement from shadow minister for Defence Andrew Hastie, shadow minister for Home Affairs James Paterson and Senate opposition leader Simon Birmingham, the trio did not condemn the government’s decision to keep the lease ongoing and unchanged, but requested an explanation from the PM about “why he is comfortable with his decision”.

Wellington Shire Mayor elected as One Gippsland Chair

ELLINGTON Shire Council Mayor, Cr Ian Bye has been elected as the Chair of One Gippsland, the peak regional body representing the Gippsland region.

This means Cr Bye is leading efforts to work closely with all levels of government, businesses, and the community to improve the region's liveability and economic potential.

Covering a huge 41,000 square kilometres, Gippsland is Victoria's largest region, home to over 270,000 people across six areas, with an annual economic output of $14 billion.

One Gippsland includes representatives from all six Gippsland Councils, Federation University, TAFE Gippsland, Food and Fibre Gippsland, Destination Gippsland, and Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Corporation (GLaWAC). The group is committed to working with businesses and the community to address the region's shared needs.

AST Gippsland Shire Council is working towards a Tuesday, December 26 opening date; however, routine maintenance has identified some issues that Council is working to address.

Contractors identified issues with the pool’s shell and plumbing system.

Mechanical plumbers, divers and pool specialists have been brought in to investigate these issues further and work to rectify

the issues before December 26.

Chief Executive Officer Anthony Basford said pool maintenance staff continue to prepare and de-winter the pool for its2023-24 season.

“It is Council’s goal to have the pool open by Tuesday, December 26; however, we cannot guarantee at this time that will be the case.

We will keep the community updated as the situation evolves,” Mr Basford said.

Training — you can work on socialising your dog to different things, but it’s important to let your dog guide the situation and not over stimulate them by pushing them too much.

Look at that and don’t react! Click and treat your dog for watching what is stressing them out calmly and not barking / cowering / reacting. If your dog reacts in any way, you are too close!

ELLINGTON Shire Council has taken significant steps towards empowering and strengthening highrisk communities in the aftermath of disasters through the establishment of Community Recovery Committees (CRCs).

Following severe storm events in 2021, Council secured state government funding through Emergency Recovery Victoria (ERV) to support resilience projects in highly impacted areas through the creation of locally led Community Recovery Committees.

The initiative was designed to provide a communityfocused approach to recovery, allowing residents to take the lead and shape their recovery and build resilience for the future.

In Wellington Shire, committees were formed in Devon North, Carrajung, Loch Sport and coastal areas.

Under the funding requirements, there are three key themes to guide priorities and projects for individual communities — that being, places of relief; communications; and training community members.

In Devon North and Carrajung, upgrades to community halls are high on the priority list as these initiatives will make a significant impact on the communities' ability to withstand and recover from emergencies.

In the coastal towns of Seaspray and Golden Beach, training initiatives such as mental health and first aid have taken a priority as part of their recovery efforts.

In Loch Sport, the CRC working under the Loch Sport Community House and Public Hall recognised the need for an emergency guide map. The map was designed to highlight important emergency information, including the location of a Neighbourhood Safer Place, defibrillator locations, the Country Fire Authority (CFA) station, and the addresses of key local businesses.

The effectiveness of this emergency guide became evident when the CFA utilised these maps to assist responding Strike Teams to pinpoint properties during the recent and unexpected bushfire in Loch Sport in early October this year.

Currently, Wellington Shire Council is collaborating with the CRC to distribute these maps to all residents of Loch Sport before the peak of summer hits.

Wellington Shire Mayor, Cr Ian Bye emphasised the importance of communityled recovery.

"The Community Recovery Committee’s place-based, community-led approach is so important when undertaking recovery work and preparing for the future. We want to make sure our communities are resilient, can lead recovery according to their needs, and are well-prepared and confident in their ability to respond to severe weather events in the future”. Cr Bye said.

Building on the important work of the CRCs is the need for emergency preparedness when heading into a hot and dry summer. Earlier this year, Council’s Emergency Management team partnered

with agencies including Victoria Police, Forest Fire Management Victoria, SES, Red Cross, Country Fire Authority and Ambulance Victoria to conduct emergency preparedness sessions for residents located in communities identified ‘most-at-risk’.

To date, sessions in Loch Sport, Seaton, Glenmaggie, Coongulla, Golden Beach, Devon North, Tarra Valley, Carrajung, Woodside, Meerlieu and McLoughlins Beach have been wellattended by the community.

They have proven highly informative, offering residents valuable tips and ideas, guidance on keeping informed, and insights into the different roles of local government and emergency services. Sessions have also supported creation of strong relationships and networks amongst neighbours, particularly for newcomers to the area and for more vulnerable community members.

Residents have appreciated the opportunity to engage with multiple emergency service agencies during Q&A sessions, ensuring a well-informed and collaborative approach to local risk management.

The establishment of Community Recovery Committees and the ongoing commitment to communityled recovery highlights the importance of enhancing resilience and preparedness.

By working closely with affected communities and stakeholders, small communities will be well-equipped to respond to future disasters and challenges.

ONTHS of preparation culminated on Saturday 25 November in Sale for the Middle of Everywhere Christmas Parade.

Gippsland Centre Administration Manager Tamara Williams had the idea in early 2023 to bring the event back to Sale after a 10year hiatus. Tamara admitted to shedding some happy tears on the big day, at seeing her dream become a reality.

The organising committee involved Gippsland Centre, Wellington Shire, Sale Business Tourism Association and Sale City Motors.

Committee members sought donations from businesses across Sale to provide fantastic entertainment options for the event.

Santa arrived in style on a custom-built sleigh, complete with bubble machine! There were Giant Stilt walking Christmas Elves, Ninja Niaz — a talented sword and LED showperson, and local entertainer Wacky Wombat.

Music was provided by Sale City Band and Sale Pipe Band, as well as talented local buskers.

Despite the earlier rain and hail, the weather cleared up and the Parade was a success with many local community groups, service groups and charities coming together to herald the arrival of Christmas.

After the Parade there were food trucks, market stalls and lots of fun activities throughout Clocktower Mall and Gippsland Centre Sale.

SANTA MADE AN APPEARANCE Centre Manager Emma Waghorne said the event was very successful and that the Parade will become a staple once again in the Sale calendar, promising that the next year’s Parade will be even bigger and better!

Emma gave a big thank you to all businesses who sponsored and community groups who were represented on the day. “It was truly a fantastic event that brought everyone together to celebrate,” she said.

Kerbside wheelie bins to be replaced

W

ELLINGTON Shire Council will shortly changeover every household’s kerbside bins, as part of a suite of improvements set to take place to Wellington’s waste collection service over the next few years.

All current kerbside recycling and landfill wheelie bins will be collected and replaced with new blackbodied bins during January and February 2024.

The rollout is only applicable to households that already receive a kerbside waste collection through Council.

New black-bodied bins will be delivered to each residence sometime during January and February. If residents are not home during this time, new bins will be delivered regardless and left on the nature strip.

Once new black-bodied bins are delivered, residents should wheel both of their green-bodied bins out for one last kerbside bin collection.

Once emptied, residents should leave their greenbodied bins on the nature

strip to be removed. A contractor will return to collect them within around three business days, allowing extra time in case of unforeseen delays. Residents can then start using their new black-bodied bins.

Wellington Shire Mayor, Cr Ian Bye said the replacement of bins increases the uptake of recycled materials in Council operations and further supports Victoria’s circular economy.

“Black-bodied bins contain up to 80 per cent recycled content, compared with green-bodied bins which only contain up to 30 per cent.

“By choosing black bins, we’re reducing our use of our natural resources. Plus, once our old bins are collected, they will be recycled into new bins — and the circular economy continues. ”Cr Bye said.

The changeover addresses the growing issue that most bins across Wellington Shire are at the end of their lifecycle. The new bins are rebranded and barcoded to each individual property, which will help identify

stolen bins and monitor contamination.

The swap also brings all bins under standardised bin lid colours, as required by the Victorian Government’s new household recycling policy. This means all Councils across Victoria will provide a consistent message to residents — red for landfill and yellow for recycling — which improves understanding of what goes into each bin and reduces waste to landfill.

All Wellington Shire branded bins are the property of Council and must be returned. Old, green-bodied bins that are put out for a service collection will not be serviced and will be removed.

Residents with a kerbside bin collection should also note that food organics and garden organics (FOGO) ‘green waste’ wheelie bins are in the pipeline, but due to processing constraints in Gippsland this is taking some time to implement. FOGO is expected 2025, aligning with Victorian Government targets for organics and glass recycling.

Cash beats electronic money Progressive The Optus crash in Australia showed the value of cash Viv Forbes The Salt Bush Club

ODAY’S world is awash with electronic money.

But last month, much of Australia’s electronic money disappeared for up to 14 hours with the crash of the Optus electronic network.

The disruption to business and the community was “immediate and profound”.

Rail networks, hospital services, retailers and banking were affected.

Naturally this was not helped by babbling politicians waving big sticks.

Shoppers rushed ATM’s to get cash for a cup of coffee.

Some were unable to pay for meals they had already consumed.

Electronic money is the modern expression of a very old monetary fraud — “fiat money”.

“Fiat Money” is token currency supplied and regulated by governments and central banks. Its value relies on a government decree that it alone must be used as "legal tender" in paying for anything in that country. Its value falls as its supply increases.

Fiat money is not new — Marco Polo described its use in China over 700 years ago. Travellers and traders entering China were forced by Kublai Khan to exchange their real money (gold and silver coins and bars) for his coupons, made from mulberry bark, each numbered and stamped with the Khan's seal. The Khan decreed that local traders were forced to accept them (“legal tender”).

Foreigners got the goods, the great Khan got the bullion and the Chinese traders got the mulberry bark (a bit like getting the rough end of a pineapple). By controlling the supply and exchange rates for mulberry money, he became fabulously wealthy, and his citizens were impoverished.

But unlike electronic money accessed via Optus, mulberry money could not disappear in a flash.

The world has a long history of pretend money.

During the American War of Independence, the colonial rebels had no organised taxing power so they printed the Continental dollar to finance the war. As the war dragged on, they printed too many dollars, and its fast debasement gave rise to the phrase "Not worth a continental". Later, in the American civil war, confederate paper money used to support the army

also became worthless.

It was widely referred to as "shin-plaster", after its highest value use in helping to bandage wounds.

Many dictators over the years tried the fiat money trick, but so many lost their heads or their thrones that it fell into disuse, being replaced by trusted real money such as English sovereigns, Spanish doubloons, AustroHungarian thalers and American gold eagles. It is mainly in wartime that people are sufficiently distracted or scared to allow rulers to secretly tax everyone who holds their depreciating pretend money.

Financing Big Wars The last century or so has seen the explosion of big governments and big wars — race wars, class wars, world wars, regional wars, the war on want, the war on drugs, the war on inflation, the war on terrorists, the war on Covid and now the Net Zero War on carbon fuels and grazing animals.

All wars cost heaps of money. They are so expensive that to raise the full cost from honest taxes alone would cause a revolt.

The monetary watershed was World War I, which saw governments mobilise all community resources to the war effort. Money printing plus ration cards were their main tools. Money creation destroyed currencies everywhere.

The cost of the war destroyed the German currency and the replacement papier mark was subject to the terrible German inflation of 1923 which paved the way for the rise of the Nazis.

Even the mighty pound sterling was fatally weakened by wars and the discipline of the gold/silver standard was gradually destroyed. The British gold

sovereign, first minted

by Henry VII in the 16th century, disappeared from circulation at the height of the Great War in 1917. The British pound became a fiat currency in 1931 and silver started to disappear from British and Australian currency in 1945 after the Second Great War. Even the mighty US dollar started on the road to ruin during the Vietnam War and gold convertibility was suspended by Richard Nixon in 1971.

We have seen the death of much of the world's funny money in just the last 50 years. For example, in Peru, one million Intis would buy a modest home in 1985; five years later it would not buy a tube of toothpaste. Brazil had so many new banknotes they ran out of heroes to print on them.

In Vietnam in the 1980’s, factories had to hire trucks to carry the bags of dongs to pay the Tet (New Year) workers' bonuses. In 1997 in Zaire, it took a brick-sized bundle of 500,000 notes of the local currency to pay for a meal — no one bothered to count them. On the Yugoslav border in 1989, tourists foolish enough to change “hard” currency for Yugoslav dinars got 14 cubic metres of dinars. "Dinars can no longer be measured in millions or billions, but only in cubic metres". It had become a cubic currency.

These grim records were eclipsed in November 2008, when Zimbabwe suffered inflation of 98 per cent PER DAY. Most governments are good at destruction — concentration camps, gulags, dictatorships, genocide, mob rule, world wars and ... the destruction of sound money. Fiat money is their underhand method of official larceny and few people realise that the

robbery is happening until it is too late.

Future generations will look back in wonder at modern monetary madness.

Words like peso, rouble, rupiah, baht, won, rouble, ringgit, inti, dinar, tolar, ostmark, dong, lira, zloty, cordoba, sole, cruziero, and yuan will join “shinplaster” as descriptions of worthlessness. Most world currencies are on the same slide to oblivion (the Australian dollar has lost over 90 per cent of its purchasing power in the last 70 years).

“You can’t print gold or store it in computers.”

Real money is always measurable by weight, such as pounds, grams, pennyweight and ounces of gold and silver, or carats of gemstones. It cannot be counterfeited or corrupted easily.

But fiat money relies for its value on the honesty and openness of the rulers. Even a monetary fool such as Fidel Castro could see what caused Cuba’s inflation. In 1993 he stood up at a rally and declared: "There are nine billion too many pesos in Cuba".

Last months Optus money crisis in Australia is a harbinger of the future.

But there is no safety in fleeing from Optus — to achieve their “Net Zero” the Green globalists plan to abolish all cash so that they can ration what we buy. “Sorry you have had your sausage for November — would you like a green smoothie instead?”

The Optus shock warns us that electronic money will join Mulberry Money, Shin Plaster and Cubic Currency in the long history of failed political money. Even our degraded paper money is better than that.

We must protect our right to have and use cash.

HE people of East Gippsland can be proud to have some very progressive and forward thinking councillors representing them.

Recently the council voted to pass a Notice of Motion to seek more information about climate change via a report, and then possibly set up an advisory body to inform their actions. This body would then advise how council might work with other agencies around climate mitigation and adaptation as well as develop strategies for effective communication of these matters to the community.

It was considered important that this process would be informed by relevant, publicly available and up-to-date scientific information, and the links to this information be available via Council’s website. A very transparent process indeed.

It appears that the council have already done a lot of work towards reducing emissions from corporate sources, and have set targets of zero emissions within their Sustainability Strategy 2022-2032. One of the intentions articulated in this strategy was to support the community to set emissions targets for the municipality.

Now, with growing awareness and concern among the community, Council appear to want to take the opportunity to demonstrate leadership.

By adopting this Notice of Motion they are showing concern for the people of East Gippsland as well as a desire to assist residents to be properly informed with the latest scientific information.

In this way the community will be better prepared to deal with climate change impacts, and less traumatised by them. The motion was passed with a vote of 5 to 4.

In April 2020 a community petition was presented to Council asking them to declare a Climate Emergency. This did not happen and again to 2023 concerned community members have been expressing their desire for Council to more actively engage with the community to provide information about the potential impacts of climate change, and show active leadership in this area.

One Councillor has admitted to not having a good knowledge of the science and issues associated with climate change but has stated that it appears to be a

matter of both importance and concern for many of the constituents represented, especially young people.

This approach, of separating personal opinion from the needs and wants of the community, is to be applauded and shows care and concern as well as a desire to genuinely reflect the electorate.

One issue that has been brought to the attention of Council, and likely to become very pertinent during the next few months, is the need for an active and up-to-date Council Heatwave Plan, as required as part of Emergency Management.

The current plan appears to be somewhat outdated and has no provision for community access to “Cool Zones” or “Hot Day Out Centres”. These are places that people can retreat to in order to stay cool in times of excessive heat and are common in many parts of the world.

Heat is not equitable.

Renters and those who cannot afford airconditioning, or even to run air-conditioning, are the most severely hit. Power outages are also a possibility resulting in widespread heat exposure of people living in specific areas.

Small children, the elderly, and those with disabilities or complex medical conditions are very vulnerable to the effects of heat stroke and heat related illnesses. Even some medications can have a compounding affect on a person’s ability to manage heat adequately. The effects of heat stroke can creep up without warning and can have severe and irreversible results.

The Bureau of Meteorology are predicting severe heat for the summer of 2023-24, and 2023 is likely to be declared the hottest year on record. Modelling shows that days when temperatures reach above 35 degrees Celsius are likely to double in the next 6 years in some places in Gippsland.

As temperatures rise due to the changing climatic conditions it is important for all people living in warm climates to be informed, aware, and prepared. In some situations this will mean having a Fire Plan or even a Flood Plan, but everyone needs to have a Heatwave Plan and know where they can go to stay cool during excessive heat if staying at home is no longer an option.

GREAT RIDE ON THE RAIL TRAIL

S

ATURDAY 23rd September 2023 was the start of the annual Great East Rail Trail Ride, the annual fully supported cycling event that sees riders travel 100+km along the East Gippsland Rail Trail, from Bairnsdale to Orbost.

Now in its eighth year, the ride saw 76 participants take part in this unique experience that showcases the beautiful East Gippsland countryside, and the collaborations with local businesses. This year’s event attracted interstate

riders from Tasmania and New South Wales.

Event manager and owner of Snowy River Cycling, Michelle Perry said of the event, “Working with other local businesses and showcasing our beautiful region is something I’m very passionate about. It’s an absolute privilege to be able to deliver something to this scale, and for so many amazing people who all value the things we are offering here: great food, transport, being in nature, and a fully supported 30km per day riding itinerary that everyone can feel comfortable with.”

“The team is super friendly and everyone went the extra mile to provide a great service;

and their local knowledge was really evident. We had Race Day Medical en-route as our First Aid responders, as well as a support bus for those who just want to take a break from the saddle. Across the three days, we had four to five support riders enroute, an event manager, a route manager, as well as luggage and campsite managers. It really was a team effort and such fantastic people to work with.”

“In Bruthen and Nowa Nowa, all available roofed

accommodation was fully booked out for this event; this included the glamping upgrades at Mingling Waters and retro caravans at Nowa Nowa Caravan Park. We also had 23 participants book our Easy Camping option, which is where set up and pack down a tent and mattress for them, so all they need to do is arrive and depart!”

Day one started in Bairnsdale and saw the riders stop at Nicholson River Winery for lunch. After riding to Bruthen from there, they then enjoyed a sumptuous roast lamb dinner at Bruthen Inn followed by trivia, hosted by our local trivia guru Graham Millward. Eightytwo-year-old rider Joan said,

“that roast at Bruthen Inn was as good as my mother’s, and that’s saying something!”

“On day two, as the sun rose amongst the fog in the morning, the participants were greeted by members of the Orbost Rotary Club, who provided hot and cold breakfast options, accompanied with a coffee from Flat Bickie.”

“Riders had the option of adding a few more challenging kilometres to their day, by riding the ‘extra sweat’ option along the Lakes Discovery Trail. They were rewarded with the presence of Flat Bickie — who provided a coffee pit stop that, for many, was a much-loved aspect of the ride.”

“After arriving in Nowa Nowa, riders could enjoy some delicious gourmet toasties from The Local Metung. There was plenty of time to explore, enjoy a

massage from Penny from Mind Body Marlo, jump in a kayak or on a SUP with Sarah at Venture Out, or take part in Liz’s Bike Maintenance Workshop which was a huge hit, particularly among women seeking more independence and confidence to fix their own bikes — in fact, many took their new-found skills back to their own cycling groups. In the evening, we had baked spuds with lamb ragu, again courtesy of The Local Metung, while local musician Ben Cawood performed all the classics. It was an evening enjoyed by all,” Michelle said.

“In the weeks leading up to the event there was strong winds, causing mayhem to the trail, but we couldn’t’ have been luckier with the weather — it was perfect across all three days.”

“Huge shoutout to the East Gippsland Rail Committee and their few volunteers for

their tireless efforts in clearing the trail, in preparation for this event. Just days before the event there was a bushfire that impacted the trial and DEECA FFM efforts to clear and get that section deemed safe and open were greatly appreciated,” said Michelle.

On the final day, riders pedalled for 40km to Sailors Grave Brewing in Orbost.

There, they enjoyed an awesome kransky and tasting paddle lunch, while relaxing to Olivia Lay’s acoustic music, before being transported back

to Bairnsdale where the ride commenced three days prior.

“The feedback has been so positive that I can’t wait to run it again — hopefully in its previous capacity of 120 riders. One rider emailed her appreciation saying that ‘it really was one of the best mini holidays I've had!’”

Christmas Crumble

PREP: 25 MINS | COOK: 40 MINS | SERVES 4-6

The odd-ball whites

Enjoy a festive crumble made with apples, cranberries and mixed spice. Serve warm with cream or custard for the ultimate comfort dessert

ingredients • 1kg apples, peeled, cored and chopped • 150g frozen cranberries • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • ½ tsp mixed spice • 75g caster sugar

FOR THE CRUMBLE • 125g plain flour • 100g cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes • 50g caster sugar • ½ tsp mixed spice

method 1. Heat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan. Tip the apples, cranberries, spices and sugar into a 22cm square baking dish and mix well to combine.

2. For the crumble, rub the flour and butter together using your fingertips until you have a breadcrumb-like consistency.

3. Stir in the sugar and mixed spice. Sprinkle the crumble in an even layer over the fruit, then bake for 35-40 mins until golden on top and bubbling at the edges. Leave to cool slightly, then serve warm.

PREP: 20 MINS | COOK: 10 MINS | MAKES 30

Christmas Crinkle Cookies Love crinkle cookies? Try our extra-festive version for Christmas, with orange zest, mixed spice and cinnamon – and not forgetting the classic fudgy centre

ingredients • 60g cocoa powder, sieved • 200g caster sugar • 60ml vegetable oil • 2 large eggs • 180g plain flour

• 1 tsp baking powder • 2 oranges, zested • 2 tsp mixed spice • 1 tsp cinnamon • 50g icing sugar

method 1. Mix the cocoa, caster sugar and oil together. Add the eggs one at a time, whisking until fully combined.

2. Combine the flour, baking powder, orange zest, mixed spice, cinnamon and a pinch of salt in a separate bowl, then add to the cocoa mixture and mix until a soft dough forms. If it feels too soft, put in the fridge to chill for 1 hr.

3. Heat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan and tip the icing sugar into a shallow dish. Roll heaped teaspoons of the dough into balls (about 20g each), then roll in the icing sugar to coat. Put the balls on one large or two medium baking trays lined with baking parchment, ensuring they’re evenly spaced apart.

4. Bake on the middle rack of the oven for 10 mins, then transfer to a wire rack to cool — they will firm up as they cool, but still be fudgy in the centre. Will keep for up to four days in an airtight container.

No-cook meringue Christmas Tree Make a simplified version of this magical meringue Christmas tree, using shop-bought meringues assembled in a tree shape, then decorated with white chocolate ingredients • 2 meringue nests • whipped cream • 36 mini meringues

TO DECORATE • melted white chocolate or white chocolate stars • peppermint candy canes, broken up (optional) • berry compote, to serve (optional)

method 1. This simplified version of a magical meringue tree uses shopbought meringues assembled in a tree shape, then decorated.

Stack the meringue nests, sandwiching them together with whipped cream.

2. Use the mini meringues to build a tree shape around the stacked nests, sticking them on using more whipped cream.

3. Decorate with melted white chocolate or white chocolate stars and broken-up peppermint candy canes, if you like, or serve with a berry compote.

ASTING a glorious 2013 Tahbilk Marsanne during the last festive season reminded me of all the other odd whites (not Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc) which are on offer today, and which were not very common at all a few years ago. Many of them are well worth searching out.

Marsanne for a start, particularly with a few years of bottle age, is a fantastic refreshing white.

Most likely originating from the Northern Rhone region of France, this variety is often blended with Rousanne, and sometimes Viogner.

Tahbilk’s plantings in The Goulburn Valley date back to 1927, so they have the most experience with the variety in Australia, and have honed a style which is most enjoyable. Nuances of pear and quince are common and the wines can be a little steely in their youth.

The Italian variety Vermentino, is likewise a refreshing summer drink. It has more than 30 synonyms around Europe, depending mainly on which region it is grown.

Trentham Estate make a cracker just over the Murray from Mildura.

Light in body it resembles the aromatic Sauvignon Blanc in style, but with more subtle lime and green apple nuances. It is planted in a wide variety of climates in Australia, but is probably more suited to the warmer regions.

From Greece, Assyrtiko (from Santorini specifically) has also emerged as a good summer refresher, and is becoming more available here in Australia.

Jim Barry from Clare in South Australia has perhaps pioneered its emergence here.

The wines can be quite mineral in feel, and are nearly always high in acid, but have a refreshing pear like fruit flavour when made by Australian winemakers.

The wines from Greece can be a little hard for us to understand and appreciate, but they do age well. Some of the winemakers on Santorini have exploited the variety’s susceptibility to oxidation, to make the famous sweet Vinsanto styles.

If you ever travel down south in France in the Languedoc region (I have seen a couple in Australia), do try a variety called Picpoul.

Mineral, peach, white pepper and apples nuances spring from this summer dazzler, although the stalwarts will sometimes compare it to White Burgundy, and drink it any time.

HE holiday season is officially upon us, and what better way to kick off the festivities than with the Bairnsdale Christmas Parade?

Returning for its 11th year, this annual event promises to be a dazzling spectacle that lights up the streets of Bairnsdale and brings the community together in the true spirit of Christmas.

Scheduled to commence at 11 am, the Christmas Parade is set to be even more spectacular than the previous year, with organisers pulling out all the stops to make it a memorable experience for attendees of all ages. As the vibrant floats, marching bands, and cheerful participants move through the streets, you can't help but feel the magic of the season enveloping the town.

The Bairnsdale Christmas Parade has become a cherished tradition for both locals and visitors alike, marking the beginning of the holiday season with joy.

But the fun doesn't end with the parade!

Christmas festivities continue at Laneway 3875.

This post-parade extravaganza promises an array of activities and attractions to keep the Christmas spirit alive and kicking.

Lakes Entrance Cunninghame Arm for Kingfish taking lures, King George whiting are around Kalimna Jetty, Nungurner and Metung. Surf beaches for tailor and salmon, offshore at Six Mile Reef for snapper, flathead and gummies.

Pettmans Beach is also worth a look.

Lake Tyers The main lake and around the shallow banks is fishing well, landing nice bream and the odd flathead, also give Mill Point and Nowa Nowa Arm a go using plastics.

Mitchell River With the rain in the last few days try the river mouth, and the northern end of the Silt Jetties in the deeper water for bream and the odd mulloway using soft plastics and deep diving lures.

Tambo River The Blue Hole and The Cliffs are the best spots for bream, with live baits. Fishing from a boat is also producing decent results.

Nicholson Down to the Swimming Hole and into the river mouth and Jones Bay for bream,

preferred baits being prawn, soft shell, cut crab and diving lures.

Metung Chinamans Creek, Boxes Creek, Shaving Point, town jetties and around the Boole Poole area is worth a look for bream using prawn. Whiting are around Nungurner.

Paynesville Bream are active around the town jetties, best results with prawn and soft plastics, some Kingfish are also being caught.

Holland's Landing Water temp is at 23°, as a result whiting are starting to become active, surf beaches for salmon and tailor on

pilchards and poppers.

Marlo Around the islands for bream and luderick biting on prawns and plastics, tailor and salmon on the incoming tide, surf beaches are also catching tailor, salmon and the odd gummy.

Bemm River The entrance is still open, try the river and channel for bream, surf beach for salmon and tailor on pilchards and poppers.

Tamboon Inlet In the river for bream using cut crab, the football ground has pinkies biting on prawn and in the lake for tailor chasing silver metal lures.

Mallacoota Harrisons Channel, the two lakes, Gipsy Point, Genoa River, the Junction and Cape Horn are producing nice sized bream and some flathead, best baits with worm, plastics and prawn.

Omeo High Country The recent rains will freshen up the rivers resulting in good fishing chasing dry flies, soft plastics and hard bodies.

AIRNSDALE Speedway held its second race meeting of the season on Saturday night with five classes in action and four winners from Latrobe Valley suburbs collecting victory out of the five classes competing. Tom Braz won the Junior Standard Saloon feature whilst fellow Latrobe Valley racers Troy Hutchinson won Division 2 Hot Rods, Jacob Vuillermin the Standard Saloons and Tahlia Campbell the Ladies Standard Saloons with Bryce Leek from Wangaratta via West Gippsland a winner in the Junior 1200cc Sedans.

Competing in the ‘Skidz Next Gen Junior Standard Saloons Showdown’ Hunter Carey from Melbourne’s Southeastern Suburbs got away to a red-hot start for the night winning heat one and then heat two of the three qualifiers. Carey was a winner by four seconds in the first event ahead of Ella Sheedy

and Braz before heat won by six seconds ahead of Braz and Cooper Joynson in the second. Braz picked up a win in the final heat by just .611 of a second with Sheedy and Tyler McDermott filling the top three places.

With a fifteen-lap final to conclude the racing for the evening Carey found himself out of the race on lap six leaving the door open for Braz to capitalize. Kaine Smith put some pressure on Braz and Thomas Pope and Sharni Stuchbery tried hard also with Braz greeting the chequered flag in front Smith and Sheedy, Pope and Stuchbery with the latter two drivers still developing their skills and not on finishing on the lead lap.

Troy Hutchison won the first two heat races in Division 2 Hot Rods before Fraser Crittenden won the third and final heat race before the feature race. Crittenden only just beat Hutchison.

Hutchison followed up a recent win at Nyora by winning the feature race with Crittenden in second and Andrew Cormack in third place.

Tahlia Campbell had a perfect night of racing in the Ladies Standard Saloons winning all three qualifiers prior to the feature event.

Campbell’s perfect night was achieved in securing a win in the final with a new fifteen lap track record for the class Campbell stopped the clock at 5:38.668 with Caroline Allen from Warragul in second spot some eight seconds adrift then Michelle George third with Bree Walker and Bairnsdale’s own Kate Stuchbery in fifth.

Junior 1200cc Sedans raced at Bairnsdale for the first time with a small field of entrants whilst competitors in this class are faced with licensing issues that has seen the class split in two between two governing bodies, with some competitors taking licences with two bodies and some with one or the other.

Victorian Speedway Council state champion Bryce Leek also had a perfect night of racing winning all three qualifiers before securing a win in the feature race in front of Chase Doherty, Brad Marshall, and Ella Sheedy.

competition was spread across nine qualifiers before the feature event with the threat of rain fast approaching.

Bairnsdale member Mitch Foster won the first heat race of the evening with Brendan Sheedy out of Bunyip taking a win in the second. Former Bairnsdale Junior competitor of last season Beau Stuchbery won the third heat race of the night in a terrific race by half a second with former Victorian champions Jacob Vuiillermin and Shane Stewart settling for second and third, signalling that the Stuchbery is a lead competitor in the open age class for the years ahead.

Vuillermin, Bairnsdale’s Josh Thomas, and Shane Stewart were winners in the second round of racing with Vuillermin again winning in round three with another local Bairnsdale member Steven Dadswell took victory in the second heat of the final round with Stuchbery a winner a second time closing out the third round. A twenty-lap feature event closed out the classes racing and racing for the night with eight drivers finishing on the lead lap of the race. Passing through the race was constant with several drivers lapped more than once with the pace on at the

front of the field. Vuillermin from Traralgon secured a gap late in the race that he was able to maintain to the finish with Stewart second, Stuchbery on the podium in third then Dadswell and Blake Smith.

Bairnsdale Speedway returns to racing on New Years Eve the 31st of December with a 2:30pm start to allow people to get back to any planned New Years celebrations. Sprintcars will be returning along with Open Standard Saloons, Junior Standard Saloons and Division 2 Hot Rods amongst the racing.

Traralgon Creek clean up G

IPPSLANDERS are being urged to do their bit to reduce litter and help protect the region’s environment by local MPs Darren Chester and Martin Cameron.

The pair teamed up for a community action day with some friends, and removed 10 bags of rubbish from the banks of the Traralgon Creek.

Mr Chester said most people do the right thing but litter was a constant problem in the region.

“I hate seeing rubbish in public places but rather than just whinge about it, I’ve been taking action, like a lot of other Gippslanders,” Mr Chester said.

“When I go for a walk I often carry a bag and pick up some litter as I do my exercise… every little bit helps and I want to thank everyone who is already taking action in their own area.

“Rubbish washes off our streets, into stormwater drains and impacts the environment of our creeks, rivers and lakes system.

“This week, Martin Cameron and I joined with a few friends and community members to have a quick clean up along the banks of the Traralgon Creek in the centre of town and it didn’t take a lot of effort to have quite an impact.”

Mr Cameron said he was looking for

more sites to organise community action in the months ahead.

“Cleaning up rubbish around our parks and waterways is something we can all do to provide a safe and clean environment that everyone can enjoy,” Mr Cameron said.

“I’m planning to co-ordinate more clean ups in the Latrobe Valley and would welcome any suggestions on public places that could benefit from a blitz by our team of volunteers.

Metung Savoured by many S AVOUR Metung (formerly the ‘Metung Food and Wine Festival’) was a delectable four-day event that showcased local food, wine and wellness events to around 600 locals and visitors.

Held from 23-26 November, the Savour Metung — Food, Wine & Wellness festival was organised by the Metung Business and Tourism Association (MBTA), with support from Business Victoria’s ‘Mental Wellbeing in the Business Community’ program.

2011, which was first held in June as a way to promote local produce and wine, and fill accommodation places on an otherwise often “dead” long weekend.

“It’s awesome to have the craft beer and gin included now. The Metung BTA have kept the integrity of what the original intention was — it’s not a market, it’s a celebration,” said Lucy.

This year was the first time the event expanded to include wellness activities. The schedule included a film screening of ‘How

MBTA volunteer organisers, Kim Bond, Adele Rosmalen and Kim Kleinitz with Event Manager, Adam Bloem.

Kim Bond, one of the volunteer organisers of the event said, “Around 600 people attended our main (food and wine) event on Saturday. This included locals from Metung, Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance, but almost half of our online bookings were from outside of East Gippsland — with many coming from Traralgon, Warragul and Melbourne.”

Even the weather played nice — until a storm rolled in 15 minutes before closing time. We took it as Mother nature’s cue that it was time to pack up and go home.”

“A big thank you to everyone who attended Savour Metung and to all of our wonderful stallholders, performers, wellness practitioners, sponsors, volunteers and everyone who contributed in some way. There were a lot of people that chipped in and helped out. For example, Whelcon donated the use of a generator, McInnes Earthmoving provided temporary fencing, Picnic Point Farm and Johnsonville Fruit Farm donated fruit… and the list goes on. It was great to have so many local businesses involved, all working together.”
