Buchan storm devastating E AST Gippsland Shire Council Mayor Cr Tom Crook said flash flooding in Buchan last month, was devastating for the Buchan community and people holidaying in the area.

Police have reported deaths of a woman and a man.

Cr Crook said his thoughts went out to the family and friends of both people who were located deceased by police on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Bureau of Meteorology reported almost 88mm of rain was recorded in one

hour, and almost 70mm in 30 minutes on Boxing Day. Police reported that emergency services were called to Cave Road just after 5pm Tuesday after reports of flash flooding. Police were told a number of vehicles in the Buchan Caves Reserve campground area were underwater and a number of people were safely retrieved from a nearby bridge.

“The Buchan Hall was opened by community volunteers as an assembly area for information and basic refreshments as outlined in the Local Incident

Management, which was much appreciated,” Cr Crook said on Wednesday 27 December.

“Last night Council was requested to establish a relief centre at the Lucknow Recreation Reserve (Bairnsdale) to receive people transferred from Buchan by bus. The relief centre was operating by very early morning and had 27 people staying overnight. The relief centre closed this afternoon.

“There is significant local damage to both private and public infrastructure. Initial investigations show that 27

roads have been impacted, but further updates can be provided when the full extent of the damage is assessed.”

Buchan Caves Reserve will remain closed.

Cr Crook thanked emergency service workers, volunteers and contractors involved in helping those in need during this most recent emergency and significant weather event.

“I urge landholders and visitors to take care and please adhere to warnings, road closures and advice provided by emergency services across the shire.”

Acknowledging the bus stop's relocation for public safety reasons, Mr Bull noted that Coles had been assured

by PTV that there would be no overall parking deficit, with the former bus stop area to be re-purposed for public parking.

"However, PTV expanded the area by taking up more space than initially indicated, making way for

approximately five bus bays.

“Rarely have I witnessed any more than two buses at the stop simultaneously.”

Mr Bull confirmed he had corresponded with the Minister, seeking assurances that there would be no net loss of parking, as initially pledged by PTV. "Accessible parking is vital for ensuring customers' safe access and the

continuous prosperity of local businesses. This issue is particularly critical during periods of high demand for parking, such as the current season," Mr Bull said.

He anticipates a response from the minister and intends to advocate for PTV to honour its commitment by restoring the muchneeded parking spaces in our town.

HE removal of multiple convenient car parks adjacent to Coles supermarket in Bairnsdale

by Public Transport Victoria (PTV), without prior consultation, has sparked community concerns. These parking spaces have made way for an expanded bus stop on Main Street, which is larger than the space it was replacing.

Nationals State MP, Tim Bull, expressed concern over the loss of nearby parking for supermarket shoppers stating the lack of forewarning regarding the substantial reduction in accessible CBD parking spaces, is disappointing and a step in the wrong direction.

"My office received numerous complaints from both the local community and Coles supermarket employees, prompting me to raise this issue with the Minister for Public and Active Transport," Mr Bull stated.

Sandy Matthews spent her new year’s eve in Lakes Entrance with her husband and two kids aged nine and ten. She said, “New Year’s Eve in Lakes Entrance needs to be seen to be believed. Sunsets reflecting off the lakes, carnival in full swing, music, food stalls and absolutely epic fireworks displays.

What an amazing family-friendly night!”

Belinda Hill attended the Twin Rivers NYE Fireworks at 9.30pm in

Nicholson, along with her mother and five-year-old son. She said, “the fireworks were fantastic, there were plenty of spots to view from and it was a truly spectacular show.”

Eagle Point Foreshore Hub welcomes you A

FTER years of planning, consultation and a weather delayed build the Eagle Point Foreshore Hub is open and welcoming visitors.

This architecturally designed East Gippsland Shire Council facility features two modern community meeting rooms with audio visual equipment, public toilets, a café, and a large deck with spectacular views overlooking Lake King. The facility is also the new home of the Eagle Point Caravan Park reception and convenience store, which services park visitors and locals alike.

Informed by community feedback, Council adopted a natural themed landscaping plan to complement the character of Eagle Point. Large rock is used to define and reinforce elevated differences and extensive plantings of native vegetation encompass the rock to create an enjoyable space for all generations to enjoy.

incorporates relaxed grassed areas, abundant seating and shared pathways. Pedestrians can now travel between the foreshore, playground, pavilion, toilets and the new multi-purpose hub building without needing to cross a road.

The development of the hub precinct was a direct response to the Eagle Point Foreshore Management Plan, where community identified

the need to upgrade this area, and the creation of a ‘hub’ was their number one priority.

Funded by a low interest loan from the Victorian Government’s Community Infrastructure Loans Scheme, Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, and Council, the precinct has transformed the area into a vibrant focal point and meeting place for residents

and visitors alike.

Mayor Cr Tom Crook said the project's primary goal was to create a unique and welcoming space.

“The Eagle Point Foreshore Hub’s design embraces the location's natural beauty, resolves previous accessibility issues, and promotes community wellbeing by providing an inviting space for people to gather and connect,” Cr Crook said.

The hub meeting rooms will be available for the community to hire in early 2024. Council is currently seeking expressions of interest for the long-term management and operation of the hub’s café, which enjoys stunning views across Lake King. The café space provides a unique commercial offering in Eagle Point and has been temporarily setup to serve the community over summer.

The café will be fitted-out for the new lessee to walk in, apply their own personal touches and commence business. The new kitchen will be positioned in 2024.

The Eagle Point Caravan Park team will manage the

café until a suitable tenant is contracted.

The caravan park convenience store offers customers the opportunity to purchase a range of items including ice creams, drinks, bags of ice, bait, fishing gear, and insect repellent.

“Once we open the doors to the hub and its facilities, we have no doubt that this spot will be well-loved community space for many years,” Cr Crook said.

The Eagle Point Foreshore Hub will be the stunning backdrop for the East Gippsland Australia Day Awards on 20 January 2024; the first of many events to be held at the hub.

Final timber offer appalling hot and cold T ineastgippsland HE State Government’s final offer to those impacted by the timber industry closure was announced this week and disappointingly shows little improvement on the draft proposal, falling significantly short of what anyone would think is a fair and reasonable exit package.

This is the view of Gippsland East Nationals MP, Tim Bull, who outlined just some of the shortfalls of a process he says has been done on the run and has not considered all elements of the situation.

“Firstly, disappointingly there has been no improvement in the base offer to harvest and haulage contractors, which is a pittance when you compare it to other recent industry departure packages.

“Secondly, the element of machinery reimbursement is that it is now capped at $1m per business. Many have machinery well in excess of this figure and if they choose to exit the industry there will be a shortfall. This is unfair and the government should not have a per business cap on this element of the package.

“Thirdly, the package that has been put together for flow on businesses that will be impacted, like seed collectors or freight companies that are not haulage contractors, has no dollars attached, or details process to determine what amount they will receive. That should be finalised by now.

“Fourthly, the packages have been framed so that those who choose to stay on and work for the Government will not get the full exit package, when in fact it should be treated separately.

“While the Federal Government

is committing to prioritising more timber in environmentally sustainable buildings, inexplicably Victorian Labor is frantically shutting down our own sustainable timber industry.

“The exit of so many workers with expertise in forestry and forest fires, and the buy-out their specialised equipment, will also have a disastrous impact on Victoria’s fire-fighting capacity, she said.

Mr Bull said there were other elements that were unfair and lacked detail and said he held a view the government’s shortfall and stingy response was all based on the fact the exit package was being forced to stick to an inadequate budget.

“It’s a symptom of the State being broke due to the fact Labor can’t manage money, can’t manage major projects and Victorians continue to pay the price.”

ASBIG Business Growth Program 2023 successfully completed with recognition event

AST Gippsland Shire Council celebrated the successful completion of the Australian Small Business Innovation Group (ASBIG) Business Growth Program 2023 recently.

A special recognition event for participants took place in December at The Centre in Bairnsdale. It is the fifth time that Council has facilitated this program, aimed at enhancing the capabilities of local businesses and ensuring their sustainability.

Mayor Cr Tom Crook said the program is an example of Council’s commitment to supporting local businesses.

"Fourteen businesses joined the Business Growth Program, spanning industries such as manufacturing, marine, food production, trades, and accommodation. These businesses collectively identified opportunities to grow their value by $4.9 million, a testament to their hard work,” Cr Crook said.

“The program comprised of group workshops held in June 2023, supplemented with Optim Improvement conducting monthly onsite visits to each business over the following six months.

Notably, this training was provided free of charge to the businesses.”

At the recognition event business owners shared success stories of increased productivity, improved organisational skills, and enhanced customer service resulting in quicker turnaround times. Another great outcome from the program resulted in work/life improvements for business owners, with one business moving their factory staff to a four-day working week and creating a healthier work-life balance!

Cr Crook and Cr Jane Greacen attended the recognition event, where Cr Crook congratulated participants and presented certificates of achievement.

The ASBIG Business Growth Program aligns with Council priorities outlined in the Council Plan and Economic Development Strategy 2022-2032.

Council's commitment to nurturing entrepreneurship and creating new business opportunities is evident in the success of the ASBIG program.

Cr Crook emphasised the program's alignment with Council's strategic goals. "Our collaborations with stakeholders promote entrepreneurship and new business opportunities. The ASBIG program directly contributes to this objective by advancing business growth and sustainability in our region."

New year brings new hope Emma Woodcock Counsellor As we embrace January and the new year, I'm taking a different approach in this edition. Instead of responding to a single reader's question, I'll be addressing some of the most common questions I've received this past year. Perhaps you can resonate with these sentiments or have similar questions of your own. My aim with this edition is to provide a nugget of hope and assistance as we look ahead to the year to come.

Reader 1 Question: Every year, I set ambitious resolutions, but I find myself losing motivation and giving up by February. How can I make lasting changes in my life?

A: It's not uncommon to feel overwhelmed by the prospect of making significant changes. Instead of setting grandiose goals, break them down into smaller, more manageable steps.

Celebrate your progress along the way, and remember that change is a gradual process, not an overnight transformation. I find remembering the helpful adage “One step at a time” can help relieve some of the pressure. Ticking the small steps off a list also helps give our brain a dopamine rush, that helps propel us forward too.

It's also important to recognise that encountering obstacles is a normal part of the journey.

Rather than viewing setbacks as failures, consider them as valuable opportunities for learning and growth.

Additionally, take time to celebrate progress by acknowledging and pausing on even the smallest achievements as this not only reinforces the positive

behaviour you want to achieve but also serves as a powerful motivator to persist in your efforts.

Lastly, but by no means least, remember that practicing selfcompassion is essential. Be kind to yourself throughout the process, understanding that meaningful change is a gradual process and that setbacks are intrinsic to personal growth. Embrace the setbacks as stepping stones toward a more resilient and evolved version of yourself.

Reader 2 Question: The holiday season was particularly challenging for me, and I'm feeling a lingering sense of loneliness. How can I combat these feelings and build connections in the new year?

A: Loneliness is feeling that you're missing out on more social connections than you're getting.

It's not just about being physically alone — you can be in a packed room and still feel totally left out.

The trick is, it's more about having close connections than just a bunch of friends. It's not a numbers game; it's about feeling close to those you do know, which takes time and vulnerability.

How much social connection we need varies for everyone. It's not about how many friends you've got on speed dial but how deep those connections go. Feeling lonely is like your body's way of saying, "Hey, let's connect those social bridges."

Loneliness can be a formidable opponent, especially after the holiday festivities wind down.

Consider joining clubs or groups aligned with your interests, attending community events, or volunteering your time. Connecting with others can provide a sense of purpose and belonging. However, if the feelings persist, it may be beneficial to explore them further with a therapist who can offer guidance and support.

Reader 3 Question: I struggle with anxiety, and the uncertainty of the future is causing me a great deal of stress.

How can I manage my anxiety in the face of so many unknowns?

A: Dealing with uncertainty can

undeniably trigger anxiety, creating a sense of navigating uncharted waters. When this happens, it's crucial to shift focus towards areas within your control and develop effective coping mechanisms.

Incorporating mindfulness exercises, deep breathing techniques, and establishing realistic expectations can serve as invaluable tools in navigating the challenges uncertainty brings.

Acknowledging and validating your feelings is a fundamental aspect of managing anxiety. By recognising and addressing the feelings and needs you have, you can better tend to the core of your anxiety. It’s similar to turning on a light on a dark path, providing a clearer perspective on the way forward.

Consider incorporating somatic practices, which focus on the mind-body connection, to also help manage anxiety. These include techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation, yoga, and mindful breathing, and can address the physical manifestations of anxiety by releasing tension, promoting relaxation, and fostering a heightened awareness of bodily sensations. Incorporating somatic practices alongside other anxiety management strategies, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy, can contribute to a more well-rounded and personalised approach to anxiety relief.

Self-care is crucial during the grieving process. Prioritize your well-being by getting adequate rest, maintaining a healthy diet, and engaging in activities that bring comfort and joy. Setting small goals for the future can provide a sense of purpose and direction, aiding in the gradual journey toward healing. Remember that seeking help and surrounding yourself with a supportive community are crucial steps in finding solace in the new year.

A: Navigating grief after a significant loss requires a personalised approach that acknowledges and accepts the range of emotions you may be experiencing. Allow yourself to grieve authentically, recognising that it's a natural response to loss.

Seek support from friends, family, or support groups, and consider the option of professional help if the weight of grief feels overwhelming.

Connecting with others who have experienced similar losses can provide a sense of understanding and empathy, fostering a supportive

New funding to help fight invasive Red Imported Fire Ants

T

HE Allan Labor Government is investing $69.7 million to help the national fight against one of the world’s worst invasive pests, the Red Imported Fire Ant (RIFA).

Minister for Agriculture Ros Spence announced Victoria will provide the full funding requested to support the national eradication program – which will halt the spread of the pest from Queensland to other parts of Australia.

RIFA (Solenopsis invictais) is a destructive South American ant that can spread quickly and cause significant negative impacts on agriculture, the natural environment, human health and the economy.

Victoria has been part of the effort to eradicate Red Imported Fire Ants since the national eradication program began in 2001, following the first detection in Brisbane.

Fire ant biosecurity zones are in place to help manage the movement of materials that are known to spread fire ants, both within Queensland and interstate.

High-risk materials including soil, hay, mulch, manure, quarry products, turf and potted plants are subject to legally enforced movement controls.

Agriculture Victoria routinely conducts surveillance, imposes market access and trade conditions on the movement of fire ant host materials from Queensland, promotes awareness and responds to reports of suspect RIFA. This proactive approach enabled a swift response from Victorian biosecurity officers when a RIFA Queen was found at a Melbourne nursery in February, having arrived in imported plant materials from Queensland.

This detection successfully contained and eradicated the ant and highlights the value of Victoria’s risk management efforts.

The new funding is in addition to $47.9 million invested by Victoria as part of the National Red Imported Fire Ant Eradication Program since 2017.

A

GRICULTURE was Australia’s largest exporter but now ranks our 3rd biggest exporter. Agriculture nevertheless remains very critical for the Australian economy. It is the export income combined with local supply that makes it so important.

Australia is very fortunate in that it has close to selfsufficiency in agricultural product and has sufficient capacity to support a significant export program, Australia agricultural products have a great reputation worldwide for quality and reliability. With the rise in world population and our proximity to Asia agriculture continues to be a major export opportunity for Australia.

Australian agriculture is one of the least Government subsidised in the world and as a consequence is very efficient by world standards.

We are an open marketbased agriculture market and where our product has a great reputation world-wide. There is a huge opportunity for growth particularly in Asia.

Our success in agriculture comes at a cost to many farmers. Farming is by its nature very cyclical and when the market is down farmers are in great distress.

For instance, cattle and sheep prices have recently dropped by 65 per cent and 35 per cent respectively.

So right now, we should be concerned about the welfare of small-scale farmers as opposed to the large-scale farmer.

There are many reasons why farming is difficult.

Farmers are essentially price takers not price makers and there is expectation by consumers as to the maximum price and a variation to this price, up or down, depends upon: - the product quality (differentiated between producers), - the timing of the delivery of the product to market.

So, a farmer’s revenue is less predictable than a business and the revenue varies upon more factors outside their control than with business (like changing and unpredictable weather conditions) and depend upon:

- Scale, - Management competency and - Productivity.

Over the years, farmer’s revenue per unit sold has not grown anywhere near the same as their costs. There is a price / cost squeeze and there appears to be no respite ahead. In fact, recently the gap between revenue and cost has pushed farmers into a loss with larger corporate farms more able to cope.

Unlike business, a higher proportion of the farmers costs are fixed or semi-fixed which means they cannot influence these costs in the short term: - property costs (mainly fixed), - transport (semi-fixed), - plant equipment (semifixed).

There are a limited number of variable costs which influence revenue.

A Farmer’s property operating cost as percentage of revenue is greater than business and also as a proportion of their assets.

Often the farm has been in the family for generations with many farmers involved causing great complexity (including intergenerational issues) as the current value of the property greatly exceeds its cost and where the profit to cost is relatively high but extremely low in relation to current value.

A farm unlike a business cannot be relocated and this causes more limitations and options for the farmer.

With farms being rated by Councils on the basis of the value of properties this puts rates out of all proportion to revenue and other costs as a percentage.

Business is much more flexible because business: - usually, has five-year leases so at the end of the term can change or relocate, - Can manage wage cost better.

Farmers: - can influence stock relatively easily by the sale, purchase or breeding but the difficulty is that price is heavily influenced by the timing of the sale, - suffer from the tyranny of distance with greater transport cost than business, - there is a higher inherent risk in farming from fire, floods, drought, OHS and farmers have more assets and risks to cover than business and so is more expensive indeed. Some risks cannot be insured e.g., flood in some areas or

alternatively you pay a much higher premium.

Scale is important in any business as it enables you to spread or fractionalise fixed and semi-fixed costs. With scale comes: - volume and - the benefit of incremental economics where sales, increases profit as fixed costs remaining relatively static.

But scale is more difficult for farmers to achieve because of the: - limits of their landholding, - availability of land nearby which only occasionally comes up for sale.

The opportunity to scale is limited to a few. In East Gippsland we have few largescale landholders that have with the benefit of scale, with the opportunity to be more productive. For the smallscale farm, the economics are questionable and when on the financial edge, means that droughts and floods are a disaster.

Farmers and farms do have lifestyle benefits but for many this is illusionary because of the hard, physical labour and to cost and tyranny of distance.

A farmer spends a high proportion of his time on his farm. This has both advantages and disadvantages: - in times if distress, the work environment reinforces the grief, - with the farm as your home there is less opportunity do other things and find balance in their lives, - contact with others is more difficult, - greater mental health risks, - requires extraordinary, • fortitude, • hard work and long hours and • family involvement. with unpredictable demands in time and resources.

If we are to continue to see Australia have family farmers and farms, which are critical to our culture and the economic survival of our towns and regions, and we as a community must help farmers with the problems outside their control.

The number of farmers and farms are shrinking albeit farm consolidation, but we need farmers for our future. We should be very sensitive about their health and well-being. People will not become a farmer unless we recognise and respect then for what they contribute to our community.

What does a landmark ruling mean for immigration detention in Australia?

USTRALIA can no longer hold visaless non-citizens indefinitely. That means the end of ministers 'playing God'.

The federal government has begun releasing people held in indefinite immigration detention after the High Court recently ruled that the practice was illegal.

The decision overturned a 20-year legal precedent that Australia had the legal authority to hold visa-less non-citizens who could not be deported for as long as it saw fit. The exact number of detainees released (or approved for release) was not confirmed by the Department of Home Affairs, but it’s expected that hundreds could be affected.

So what sparked the decision? How many people will and won’t be released? What’s at stake for the government if they’re not released? How does the “character concerns provision” fit into all of this?

What does everyone have to say about the ruling? Crikey clarifies.

What sparked the decision?

The recent landmark High Court ruling was made in relation to the case of a stateless Rohingya man known as NZYQ. According to court documents, he first arrived in Australia in 2012 as a refugee by boat and

was held in immigration detention until being granted a bridging visa in 2014. In 2015, NZYQ was arrested and charged with a child sexual offence (at which point his bridging visa was cancelled), convicted, jailed, and released on parole in 2018. He was immediately detained by immigration as an “unlawful non-citizen”, denied a protection visa on safety grounds, and nominated for deportation to another country (albeit no other country was available to accept him).

Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed in question time on Thursday that NZYQ had been released following the decision by the High Court that ongoing and indefinite detention with “no real prospect” of removal from Australia in the “foreseeable future” was illegal. In short: the government cannot keep someone locked up without an actionable plan to resettle them. It’s considered punishment, and immigration officials are not legally authorised to dish that out.

The decision rewrote a two-decades-long precedent set in the 2004 case of Al Kateb and Al Khafaji, which greenlit the prospect of life in immigration detention — no right to stay in Australia but no option to leave.

How many will and won’t be released?

in immigration detention had been released or were scheduled for release, and how many would not be subject to release, following Wednesday’s high court ruling.

Solicitor-General Stephen Donaghue told the court on Wednesday that Home Affairs had flagged 92 people eligible for immediate release and a bigger pool of 340 long-term detainees likely impacted by the decision.

Of the 92-person cohort, 83 had visas cancelled or refused due to “character concerns”, 78 were refugees unable to return to their country of origin because of a “well-founded fear of persecution”, and 14 were considered stateless or legally unidentifiable.

The government is now facing potential financial liability if it fails to release those affected.

Home Affairs data showed there are 1,056 people in Australian immigration detention facilities (not inclusive of community locations) and a further 282 people in community detention. Of the 1,056 people in facilities, it states that 966 had a criminal history and 130 came to Australia by boat seeking asylum.

The average time spent in detention was 709 days, with 361 people confined in closed detention for more than two years and 198 people held for twoplus years in community detention. There are currently 73 children in community detention.

What’s meant by ‘character concerns’?

“Character concern” is a term included in the Migration Act 1958 defined as a non-citizen with a “substantial” criminal past, a poor track record in detention (formally, someone who has committed and been convicted of a crime while in immigration detention

or during an attempted or successful escape from lock-up), a link into criminal networks, or simply someone that the minister “reasonably suspects” of the aforementioned criminal undertakings. “In the event that the non citizen were allowed to enter or to remain in Australia, there is a risk that the non citizen would engage in criminal conduct in Australia … or represent a danger to the Australian community,” the act states.

It was revealed that of the 92 detainees eligible for immediate release, 21 were flagged for review by the home affairs minister due to “national security, cybercrime, serious and high profile organised/gang-related [or] high ranking [outlaw motorcycle gangs] members” related character concerns, 27 went to the immigration minister for consideration of “violent offences, crimes against children [or] family/ domestic violence”, and 35 decisions were palmed off to ministerial delegates.

The character concerns provision has been a favourite talking point of the Coalition, whose members have argued the release of these “problematic individuals” would pose a threat to the nation.

The High Court deemed the nomination of “character concern” was the jurisdiction of a court of law. No more “playing God” for the minister.

What are everyone’s thoughts on the matter?

The Refugee Council of Australia said the decision

was a “welcome step” and called on the immigration minister to urgently review the cases of those currently detained. The same sentiment was echoed by the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and Human Rights Law Centre which appeared as “amici curiae — friends of the court” to endorse the illegality of indefinite detention.

Australian UN High Commissioner for Refugees Adrian Edwards said the decision would be a first step to put Australian immigration practices in lockstep with international law.

Executive director of Refugee Legal David Manne said the decision to ensure detention could “no longer be forever” was of profound consequence, while University of Sydney Law School immigration law expert Mary Crock wrote that it was a “revolutionary result”.

As for politics, the Coalition went hard on the government’s lack of readiness and failure to have a “plan B” in place should the High Court ruling go as it did, while the Greens said the ruling was evidence that indefinite detention was a reality (despite the government’s assertions that it wasn’t) and requested the immediate release of “anyone being held in contravention of this ruling”.

ET ready for the summer swim season at Bairnsdale Outdoor Pool and Bairnsdale Aquatic and Recreation Centre (BARC).

As the summer heat begins to kick-in, East Gippsland Shire Council have opened the Bairnsdale Outdoor Pool, starting from Tuesday, December 26.

You can soak up the sun and enjoy a refreshing escape from the heat this summer as the season runs through to Monday, March 11, 2024.

The pool’s opening hours continue to be based on

temperature triggers, which can be viewed on their website www.barcleisure. com.au.

If you’re looking for a swim program, the Bairnsdale Aquatic and Recreation Centre will be kicking off the new year with not one but two fantastic swim programs!

They’ll be hosting a fiveday VICSWIM program running from January 8-12.

Additionally, a five-day Holiday Intensive Swim Program will be held at the BARC on January 15-19.

ARTH is living in the latter days of the Holocene Warm Era. This is the latest short, fertile, warm interlude within the long, barren, Pleistocene Ice Age. We are at the top on the RHS of that cycle. Does that look like a bottom, or a top?

Despite what the climatescare-media tell us, the big danger facing life on Earth is not global warming - it is a return of the deathly Pleistocene ice sheets which once covered the great grain belts of Eurasia and North America. Such global cooling will also trigger plant starvation as more carbon dioxide plant food is dissolved from the atmosphere into the cooling oceans.

We have abundant evidence that alarmist computer modellers have no ability to forecast climate.

Meteorologists are gaining the ability to forecast weather up to a week ahead and the trends in ocean temperatures can help forecast whether we have El Nino or La Nina conditions for the next year. But for weather or climate forecasts beyond one year we must look to other scientific disciplines — geology, archaeology, physics and astronomy.

Geological evidence comes from ice cores, deep drilling, stratigraphic mappings and clues exposed in mines and quarries.

These records show clearly that with no help from human activities, Earth has suffered recurring periods of volcanism, tidal waves, floods, droughts, asteroid strikes, planetary disruptions, magnetic reversals, ice ages and the extinction of many species. Archaeology and studies of tree rings have also revealed more recent evidence of disruptive natural climate changes.

The global warmth we enjoy today can only come from two sources — the sun or the Earth’s molten core.

The major and most reliable source of global warming is that big nuclear power plant in the sky. Our sun directs a continual stream of radiant energy towards Earth. This solar energy melts ice and evaporates water from oceans, seas and lakes.

This feeds rain and snow, provides energy for plant life and generates the atmospheric convection that powers trade winds, storms,

tornadoes and cyclones.

Energy also reaches the surface and the oceans from the molten core of the Earth via surface and sub-surface volcanic activity.

Many volcanoes on land are generally quiet now but the geological evidence shows that there are periods of massive and destructive volcanic activity often coincident with species extinction and the onset of new episodes of life.

Our scary computerised forecasts of dangerous global warming are based solely on an absolutely trivial factor — the extent to which human production of carbon dioxide and methane may affect global weather by slowing down the transmission of solar energy through the atmosphere.

They also ignore the fact that CO2 feeds all plant life (which feeds all animal life) and dismiss the fact that current levels of CO2 in the atmosphere are dangerously low.

Almost every day now, the alarmist media tries to concoct a disaster story from the changing weather.

Weather is always changing — the only time Earth has had a “stable” climate is during the long deathly ice ages.

A diligent lone mathematician/astronomer, Milutin Milankovitch (without giant computers or world conferences) calculated the likely cycles of global temperatures by calculating the varying solar energy received by the major northern hemisphere land masses. His calculations have proved better than anything the IPCC can produce.

The Milankovitch cycles are telling us than the next climate cycle will be a cold one.

This is supported by three pieces of evidence.

Firstly, glaciers are returning. When geologists investigated the age of most current glaciers they found they were surprisingly young, and rather than declining, many are growing.

Glaciers known to be advancing include the Vernagtferner glacier in the Alps, the Perito Moreno glacier, the Viedma glacier, the Piedras Blancas Glacier and the Gorra Blanca Glacier in Patagonia; the Tsaa glacier

and the Hubbard Glacier in Alaska; the Jakobshavn Glacier; the Hofsjökull, Langjökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and Vatnajökull glaciers in Greenland.

It was reported in 2017 that at least 58 glaciers in New Zealand advanced between 1983 and 2008 with the Franz Josef Glacier advancing nearly continuously during this time and actually regaining almost half of the total length it had lost in the twentieth century.

The Fox glacier in New Zealand is also advancing as is the Nisqually Glacier in North America.

A significant proportion of Himalayan glaciers are also advancing, contrary to the IPCC claiming in a 2007 report that Himalayan glaciers were all retreating and could vanish by 2035.

Secondly, the Greenland Ice Core Project has been used to reconstruct climate for the last 10,000 years. This showed that temperature there has fallen over the last 6000 years. It also showed that global temperature drives atmospheric CO2 levels, not the other way around.

Thirdly, there is the Medieval Warm Period when historians and climatologists can deduce that most areas of the world were warmer than they are now. Food production and population grew and art and culture were supported.

This benign productive era was followed by the Little Ice Age which lasted from about 1300AD almost to the beginning of the 20th Century. The period from 1550AD to 1700AD was a frigid time and famine and disease stalked the world.

Arctic sea ice expanded, rivers and lakes froze, the tree line fell, cold gales wracked Europe (one destroyed the Spanish Armada), crops failed and the population fell in northern areas like Norway and Scotland. The population of Greenland perished and the capitals of both Scotland and Norway moved south.

Today’s modern warm era started about 2000 AD but it will probably prove to be just

another short warm reprieve.

As the warmth fades and the ice returns, the threatened generations will gaze in wonder at the snow-covered solar panels and blizzard-damaged wind turbines and power lines that this generation littered over the landscape at such great cost. Future wars will be fought for access to oil, coal, gas and nuclear energy, and herds of cattle, sheep, goats and reindeer will be valued and protected. Australians will also discover why the Snowy Mountains got that name.

Only two conditions are needed for a sudden return of the ice — increased volcanic heat under the oceans and cold cloudy skies.

Evaporation from heated oceans will provide the moisture and the cold skies will cause the precipitation of snow and ice on land.

Ice ages can start frighteningly fast and appear to be triggered by magnetic pole reversals which trigger massive volcanism especially in the oceans along the mid-ocean trenches. This under-sea heating drives evaporation from the oceans, increasing cloud cover and reducing surface temperatures.

Once the winter snow is not all melted by the heat from the next summer, the ice age tipping point is reached. The extra snow will reflect more solar energy so that ice sheets grow and sea levels fall. Coral reefs will be left stranded and island nations will expand as sea water is locked up in ice sheets.

Carbon dioxide plays almost no part in this drama except with plant life. When the seas warm up, the dissolved CO2 is driven into the atmosphere and plant life flourishes. But when the oceans cool down, carbon dioxide is re-dissolved and plants suffer. (Only fools like Queensland mining company Glencore would try to win green points by promising to bury the gas of life by forcing it into underground aquifers.)

So let us be relieved from the daily dirge about imagined global warming disasters and plan what we need to do to ensure reliable energy and food supplies as the next ice age approaches.

“The staff were all really friendly (special mention to Ike the waiter), and the meals came out fast which we always appreciate.”

A

recent drive around Tasmania made me realise just how much the industry has grown there in the past 20 years. Once held with scorn over their efforts in growing Cabernet Sauvignon and trying to make it work as a wine from such a cool climate, Tasmania is coming of age as a premium producer. Yes, it is still cool (as in temperature cool), but with the gradual warming of our summers, not just the traditional cool climate varieties of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are blossoming.

Accolade Wines (The old Hardy Wine company), have long held that there are perfect conditions for sparkling wines in the Apple Isle, and their Arras range of sparklers is testament to these thoughts — some of the best in Australia these days.

Brown Brothers are another reasonably large company which has been lured to the island, with fantastic results for their Devils Corner vineyards amongst others.

I was surprised to learn, that the first recorded vineyard in Tasmania was recorded back in 1823, and that Australia’s first sparkling wine was made there in 1826. Most of the vineyard development, however, has occurred since 1990, and although the state pro-duces only about 1 per cent of Australia’s wine by volume, it is rapidly gaining a serious reputation for its value of production.

Although Tasmania is a single wine region, the state is divided into seven areas. The North West broadly around Devonport, The Tamar Valley, following the Tamar river north from Launceston, The Pipers River area also not far from Launceston, the East Coast from Bicheno south to Orford, the Coal River valley around Richmond north of Hobart, the Derwent valley sort of North west of Hobart and the Huon Valley/D’Entrecasteaux Channel to the south of Hobart.

I counted 4 wine facilities in the North West, 25 in the Tamar and Piper river areas, 10 on the east coast trail, and 27 in the areas around Hobart.

Many of the sales outlets have quality restaurants, and the scenery between the vineyards is stunning. The best thing is you can get from one area to another on good roads in very little time.

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the most commonly produced wines, but we tasted some very lively Pinot Gris, Riesling and some great cool climate Shiraz wines on our visit.

My tip for your visit, is to take a good set of walking boots, as there are some stunning walks though the Freycinet Peninsula, Cradle Mountain and other National Parks. Santé.

Perfect for BBQs and buffets, this epic summer salad is an assembly of gorgeous ingredients – no cooking required.

Serve it with lamb kebabs for an impressive summer feast! ingredients • 400g black beans, drained • 2 large handfuls baby spinach leaves, roughly chopped • 500g heritage tomatoes, chopped into large chunks • ½ cucumber, halved lengthways, seeds scooped out and sliced on an angle • 1 mango, peeled and chopped into

chunks • 1 large red onion, halved and finely sliced • 6-8 radishes, sliced • 2 avocados, peeled and sliced • 100g feta, crumbled • handful of herbs (reserved from the dressing)

For the dressing • large bunch mint • small bunch coriander • small bunch basil • 1 fat green chilli, deseeded and chopped

• 1 small garlic clove • 100ml extra virgin olive oil • 2 limes, zested and juiced • 2 tbsp white wine vinegar • 2 tsp honey

method 1. Make the dressing by blending all of the ingredients in a food processor (or very finely chop them), saving a few herb leaves for the salad. You can make the dressing up to 24 hrs before serving.

2. Scatter the beans and spinach over a large platter. Arrange the tomatoes, cucumber, mango, onion and radishes on top and gently toss together with your hands. Top the salad with the avocados, feta and herbs, dressing can be drizzled on top or served on the side.

Origin of wine in Gippsland

Celebrate summer with these moreish crumble buns. These eye-catching desserts are perfect for summer and make an impressive sweet treat ingredients • 120g butter, 70g at room temperature and 50g chilled and cubed • 370g plain flour • 2 eggs

method

1. Melt the 70g butter and let it cool. Sift 300g flour into a bowl, add the eggs, 75g sugar and the yeast and mix everything with a spoon. Slowly add the lukewarm milk and cooled butter. Mix until all ingredients are well combined into a very soft, sticky dough. Cover the bowl with a clean cloth and put in a warm place to rise for 40–60 mins until doubled in volume.

2. To make the crumble, combine the remaining flour with the remaining sugar and chilled butter. Rub the butter into the flour until you have a breadcrumb-like texture. Chill.

3. When the dough has risen, divide it into six portions, squashing it down slightly and then shape each into a ball on a floured work surface — the dough may still be sticky, so dust it with flour and work quickly. Flatten the balls gently with your hand so that they look like buns. Put on a baking tray lined with baking parchment.

4. Divide the strawberries between the buns, putting them in the center of each and sprinkle with crumble. Heat the oven to 180°C/fan 160°C/gas 4. Bake the buns for 25 mins until puffed and cooked. Cool and then dust with icing sugar, if you like.

VER a wine driven lunch in February 1984 in Bairnsdale a group of local grape growers and wine lovers decided that it would be a good idea to form the “Gippsland Grape growers and Winemakers Association Inc.” It would be an all of Gippsland body aimed to raise the level of knowledge about grape growing and winemaking, to promote Gippsland Wines and to represent its members to Government and other groups.

The core beliefs were that collectively we could achieve more than as individuals and a vision that Gippsland had a future as a wine region with well regarded, distinctive wines.

The inaugural Chairman was Ken Eckersley of Nicholson River Winery, who was also the youngest in the initial group.

Gippsland is a large sprawling area, some 20% of the State of Victoria, with diverse climates and soils, 'mountains to the sea' type of area. Not surprisingly the wines are diverse too. The

main varieties grown are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah (aka Shiraz) and in all total about 240 ha in area at 40 vineyards and perhaps another 40 in tiny plots. There are 36 cellar doors selling wine to visitors.

With over 50 years of wine grape growing experience in Gippsland it can safely be said that many wine varieties can flourish and produce marketable wines. Different wine styles, apart from the usual dry table wines, like sparkling and sweet botrytis can be produced if needed.

The critical factors are the costs of production, high for small operators, and being able to sell in a market saturated with

wine at all price points.

Hence the importance of direct selling at the cellar door and value adding at the winery’s restaurant or function centre. Gippsland wineries play an important part as attractions, bringing in visitors and building the region’s natural image in being productive and having an enjoyable lifestyle.

Gippsland Wines are distinctive. They are flavoursome with strong varietal features. Generally, they are not mainstream Australian wines, more full flavoured than full bodied and more elegant than harsh. They are good wines to accompany foods.

Above all each winery is offering a unique experience.

Non-alcoholic Summer Spritz This non-alcoholic cocktail uses granadilla, a type of passion fruit which is both sweet and sour – it makes a fruity spritz with slight tartness ingredients • ½ ripe granadilla passion fruit, pulp only (or a normal ripe passion fruit also works)

method

• lime, juiced • 1 tbsp sugar syrup • handful of ice • 125ml sparkling water

1. Tip the passion fruit pulp, lime juice and sugar syrup into a wine glass and gently muddle using a muddler or the end of a rolling pin. Add the ice and sparkling water and stir before serving.

Bag limit reduced for cockles in corner inlet

T

HE daily recreational bag limit for cockles in Corner Inlet has been reduced to 2 litres per person to better share the resource and ensure the species remains sustainable for generations to come.

Victorian Fisheries Authority CEO Travis Dowling said Corner Inlet is a fantastic fishery shared between recreational and commercial fishers and is home to a delicious array of seafood including King George whiting, flathead, calamari, gummy shark and cockles.

“Cockles offer shore-based fishers who don’t have a boat another option to take home a fresh meal of Victorian seafood for the dinner table,” Mr Dowling said.

was a recommendation of the Corner Inlet Fisheries Management Plan released in 2022 and received widespread support during recent public consultation.

The new lower bag limit for cockles of 2 litres, or half a litre if removed from their shells, applies only to Corner Inlet and includes McLoughlins Beach, a popular spot amongst fishers to collect the bivalve shellfish.

Elsewhere across Victoria the cockles bag limit remains at 5 litres per person, or 1 litre if removed from their shells.

Just before the Christmas holidays, Fisheries Officers installed signage regarding the change around Corner Inlet and McLoughlins Beach to

inform local and visiting fishers of the new lower bag limit.

Mr Dowling said summer is a wonderful time to enjoy the great outdoors, wet a line with family and friends, and explore Victoria’s world-class fisheries in Gippsland and beyond.

Recreational fishers are reminded that only hands and feet can be used to collect cockles and that digging implements are not permitted.

A recreational fishing licence is required, unless exempt.

LOCAL ARTIST PAYS HOMAGE TO CATTLE HERITAGE

84-YEAR-OLD Terry Petersen is a lifelong Omeo resident and wellknown local artist who has been paying homage to cattle heritage by painting murals in the Ensay township.

The project was commissioned

by Barry Newcomen, a local Hereford bull breeder, and the Ensay Committee.

Local resident Jason Palmer says, “Over the last eight weeks or so this magnificent mural has been taking shape just down the road from me.

I've seen it in stages on my bike rides but today I happened upon the artist this morning. We talked for a good couple of hours whilst I watched him work. It’s not often one gets to experience watching a master at work. To see a man of his vintage with so much energy and ardour, still out there doing what he loves... just fantastic.”

Jason has been so inspired by Terry, that he’s producing a short film on the project, which he aims to share with locals and via social media, once the mural is complete.

Gippsland loses an icon – Vale Richard Rijs Darren Chester MP

ERRIBLY sad news... Gippsland has lost a giant with this week’s passing of former Patties Foods managing director Richard Rijs.

Richard was a business visionary and pioneer who worked alongside his brothers, to lead the growth in a family-owned bakery which became the world’s biggest manufacturer of pastry products.

I can’t think of a more significant business success story in the past 50 years across Gippsland than the

transition of the Rijs family bakery into the organisation which exists today.

In an era of big companies swallowing little ones… the Rijs family reversed the trend when it bought the Four ‘n Twenty brand, and moved the manufacturing of the iconic pies to the Bairnsdale factory. Patties has developed into a world-class food manufacturing facility but throughout it all, Richard never forgot where he came from.

A huge supporter of sourcing local products, Richard would seal a deal with a handshake and you knew he

had the personal integrity to always follow through. He was also a massive supporter of creating local jobs and good causes in our community like Surf Lifesaving Lakes Entrance and the Hope drug and alcohol recovery centre which benefited from his wisdom and generosity.

I’ve known Richard and his wife Marlene for the best part of 25 years and grew to respect and admire his work ethic, passion and determination.

He helped me during my time at ‘Champions of the Bush’ and we shared a love of regional Australia and

everything it can offer.

If there’s any small consolation in his passing, at least Richard had the chance to attend his beautiful granddaughter’s wedding last month. And of course the one-eyed Collingwood fan would have loved watching his Magpies win another flag in the AFL this season!

I’ve lost a good friend, Gippsland has lost a giant, and his family has lost a loving husband, father and grandfather.

May he rest in peace.

My condolences to all who loved an outstanding Australian.

AIRNSDALE Speedway Association hosted a New Years Eve race meeting to entertain motorsport fans prior to the start of 2024 and on a warm day once the dust was settled the winners included Chase Ingram from Warragul, Mal Siely a local Bairnsdale man, Josh Thomas the clubs number one Standard Saloon competitor, Alistair Bastian from Lucknow, and Troy Wilson from Lakes Entrance.

Junior Standard Saloon competitors competed in the latest points round for the Next Gen Junior Standard Saloon series with drivers from as far as Southeast Melbourne attending the event.

Jack Stewart from the Latrobe Valley claimed a win in the first of three qualifying races with Dylcan Sweet having his best race day since he began competing a racing incident put Liam Ingram out of the finishing results whilst looking good for second place, whilst his brother Chase Ingram rounded out the three-heat race wins in the very next race after a gap between races to clear the crash

scene.

Unfortunately, another crash in heat three to Ella Sheedy put her out of the race and another lengthy stoppage was required to clear the scene. Leading every lap in a twelve-lap final, Ingram went on to claim the win in front of Sweet, Tannah Lee from Bairnsdale, Tom Braz, and Stewart.

Mal Siely won the first heat in Limited Sportsman before Darren Adams who finished second in heat one reversed the result in the second heat race.

Most of round three for all classes was cancelled due to serious racing incidents and the Sportsman moved into a final over eight laps with Siely finishing one and a half

seconds in front of Adams, Daniel Hurley, and Chris Woeltjes.

Standard Saloon racers each competed in two heat races with the third round cancelled and Shane Stewart by a huge seven second margin started off round one with victory.

Brendan Sheedy, and Gus Argoon closed out the

first-round race wins. Argoon won the first heat race of the second round with Stewart also winning once more before Josh Thomas won the last qualifying heat race.

Leading from lap two after getting past Stewart, Thomas who has an outstanding win rate at Bairnsdale Speedway went on to win the fifteenlap final from Stewart, Jack

Braz, David Streeter, and Jack Yeomans.

Sprintcar action seen a handful of local stars in action with Kyle Stathopoulos joining the fray from Melton.

Alistair Bastian claimed victory in heat one before Koby Noonan claimed the win in the second.

In the twenty-lap final veteran Wiseleigh race drivers and farmer Mark Laity sat in second for much of the race before Noonan passed him to chase Alistair Bastian out in the race lead. Bastian went on to win by just .603 of a second in the end from Noonan, Laity, Ethan Bastian, and Rod Dennison.

Division 2 Hot Rods were having an important hit out prior to their upcoming Victorian title at Bairnsdale and Trafalgar racer Rob Tatterson claimed a terrific win in the first heat race by just .102 of a second in the end from Troy Hutchison from the Latrobe Valley.

Lakes Entrance racer Ben Crittenden rolled his car whilst in third putting him out of the race meeting.

Troy Wilson from Lakes Entrance won heat two by less than half a second before going on to lead every lap in a ten-lap final to defeat Hutchison Rob Tatterson, Andrew Tatterson, and Melissa Tatterson in the final.

Flare disposal debacle

OCAL boat users, mandated to carry marine flares on their recreational vessels, are encountering difficulties disposing out of date stock.

Nationals State MP for Gippsland East, Tim Bull, highlighted issues faced by boat owners. When heading offshore, they are required to have two orange smoke flares, two incandescent red flares, and two parachute flares on board.

"Flares typically have a lifespan of about three years, requiring regular replacement to ensure compliance and avoid fines," Mr Bull said.

"With approximately 194,000 registered boats in Victoria, a substantial number of flares need replacement every three years and old stock must be appropriately disposed of.”

Mr Bull pointed out that although Gippsland Water Police station serves as the designated flare disposal point locally, it is

often unmanned due to operational commitments focused on patrolling waterways for public safety.

"The challenge we confront is that if mariners lack a convenient method to dispose of their outdated flares safely, they resort to unsafe disposal practices.”

In an embarrassing oversight by Safe Transport Victoria (STV), a one-off flare collection event, held two years ago, remained advertised on its website, misleading mariners that there were planned disposal days for the upcoming summer.

"STV has indicated that the closest location for East Gippsland residents to conveniently drop off unwanted pyrotechnic devices is Sale Police Station, which entails close to a two-and-a-half-hour round trip from Lakes Entrance to Sale.

"This discourages responsible disposal and may lead to increased instances of marine flares lighting up the night sky this New Year's Eve," he added.

"I am urging the Allan Labor Government to provide accessible solutions for the public to comply with regulations and safely dispose of these potentially hazardous goods.”

East Gippsland Fishing Report Lakes Entrance There is a good variety of fish to be found with garfish, bream, flathead and King Fish in Cunninghame Arm, heading up towards Kalimna Jetty. Surf beaches have salmon and tailor, chasing pilchards and poppers.

Offshore at Six Mile Reef for snapper, morwong, and gummies closer to the beach.

Lake Tyers Bream are active in water around 1.5m in depth, flathead can be found in the main lake, The Glasshouse, and around the Islands. Surf beach for tailor and salmon.

Mitchell River Try the back water, Wy Yung Lind Bridge, The Old Butter Factory towards Shadoof Lodge, Two Bells and The Cut, on worm, prawn, soft shell, mussels, soft plastics and cut crab.

Tambo River Best spots for bream are from The Cliffs, The Blue Hole heading into the river mouth and Tambo Bay using local prawn, soft plastics, soft shell and drifting prawn.

From the Two Bridges heading toward the Pear Tree, Swimming Hole, onto Thumb Point and into Jones Bay, best baits being floating prawn, cut crab, plastics and worm.

Metung The Boardwalk, The Flats and town jetties for bream taking prawn. Shaving Point has whiting biting on pipis and mussels.

Paynesville There are still some salmon and tailor about best results with metal lures. Town jetties and structures have bream on prawn and plastics, Ocean Grange has gummy shark.

Holland's Landing Give Tom’s Creek, Blonde Bay and Storm Point heading down to White Cliffs and Pelican Point a go with plastics and prawn. Surf beaches are landing salmon, tailor and the odd gummy.

Marlo Salmon are in the channel chasing metal lures, town jetties have bream on prawn, surf beaches for tailor and salmon. Offshore has gummies, flathead and the

odd Bronze Whaler.

Bemm River In the channel for salmon taking metal lures, bream are also in the channel biting on sandworm and local prawn.

Flathead are in the lake using soft plastics and salmon are over the beach.

Tamboon Inlet In the river for bream on cut crab and prawn, the river mouth has flathead with soft plastics, surf beaches are producing salmon, chasing

metal lures and pilchards.

Mallacoota Town jetties has a mixed bag, for bream try the top and bottom lakes, flathead are around Harrisons Channel and Bastion Point is producing nice Yellowfin, bream, tailor and gummies.

Omeo High Country River conditions should be on the improve after the recent rains, give fly fishing with Nymphs, large hard bodied lures and worm a try.

Putting Victoria’s local producers on show R EGIONAL towns across Victoria are being called on to get creative and show off their locally produced food and drinks as part of the Allan Labor Government’s $1 million Regional Activation Grants Program.

Minister for Agriculture Ros Spence today opened the first round of grants under the new program, inviting Regional Tourism Boards, food and fibre groups, and regional bodies to apply for funding.

“We’re empowering local producers to promote Victoria’s wonderful variety of locally sourced food and drinks and

celebrate the unique stories behind every product,” Ms Spence said.

Grants of up to $70,000 are available to hold local events that showcase local food and beverages in the regions where they are produced.

“These grants will help foster a rich appreciation for Victorian produce and encourage consumers to shop in their local region and build a connection with local producers,” Ms Spence said.

This new initiative aims to shine a light on the high quality food and beverages produced in Victoria’s regions and connect local producers

with local consumers.
