Getting Out and Staying Out (GOSO) empowers young men to avoid involvement in the criminal justice system by reshaping their futures through educational achievement, meaningful employment, and financial independence.

LETTER FROM MARK GOLDSMITH, PRESIDENT & CEO Mark Goldsmith keeps in contact with GOSO alumni, like Philip W. (left), to stay updated on their successes.

Dear Friends, If you wanted to visit me at the headquarters of GOSO, which I founded in 2004, you would have had to meet me at a Starbucks in downtown Manhattan. Every day I arrived at my “office” — a small table in the coffee shop — and charged into my day of one-on-one meetings with young men seeking to break the cycle of incarceration. For the first year, it was just me sitting across the café table from a young man ready for change but unsure of where to begin.

That first year helped me understand the obstacles standing between these young men and a life of personal and professional success: Not having a place to sleep at night; insufficient funds for necessities like a Metrocard; lack of job skills or education to secure meaningful employment and financial stability. Add to that complex mental and emotional stressors, it was clear that these men needed a robust support system beyond what I alone could offer. So, in 2005, I decamped from the coffeeshop and established GOSO in East Harlem.

Flash forward fifteen years and I’m immensely proud of what GOSO has become: a recognized leader in supporting justiceinvolved young men in NYC. Our signature approach, the Three E’s, seeks to support participants emotionally so that they can thrive and succeed in their educational and employment pursuits.

And it’s working: Our recidivism rate is less than 15%, far below the national average. We’re humbled by the trust our participants have in us, their GOSO team. We’re proud of the recognition they (and we) are receiving:

GOSO has changed significantly since 2004. Our office is no longer a table at a cafe, and our team is no longer just me, but an entire staff of people dedicated to our mission.

LETTER FROM RÉG ANDRÉ, CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

Seeing this dynamic inspired one of GOSO’s most successful new initiatives, the Leaders in Training (LIT) program. This program offers a framework for participants interested in developing leadership abilities to become an effective and respected voice among their peers. The men in our inaugural cohort will receive training in conflict mediation, basic legal rights and much more. LIT fosters a sense of agency among participants, pushing them to be catalysts for change.

Delivering on our promise to participants also means continuing to expand GOSO’s services to address their most fundamental needs: • Our new housing and benefits specialist connects our participants with stable housing and benefits like health care and SNAP. • We’ve also hired an Employment Development Associate who focuses on employment opportunities for our adolescent participants.

• We’re building out an Advanced Curriculum that will offer more opportunities for our participants to learn skills like salary negotiation, financial literacy, civics, and entrepreneurship.

I’m in awe of the incredible work being done by GOSO participants and staff. Our methods are working, our capacity is growing and we’re thankful to all those whose support powers us forward.

WHO WE SERVE

BOROUGH

GOSO serves clients in all five boroughs, with a majority from Manhattan and the Bronx, a substantial number in Brooklyn, and a presence in Queens and Staten Island.

Participants GOSO serves 16- to 24-year-old justice-involved young men who reside in New York City. Our work brings us to the jails on Rikers Island, Upstate Prisons, and Juvenile Detention Centers, where we hope to encourage participants to enter our community program in East Harlem.

GOSO serves approximately 1,000 active participants across our community and reentry programs. This includes 500 participants in the community program, 350 in our Upstate Correspondence Program, and 150 in the jails on Rikers Island. Aside from our work with active participants, we also connect with hundreds of young men who are currently incarcerated, providing information on our services and inviting them to take the first step in radically reshaping their lives.

Meaningful work experience that builds skills and opens doors is a crucial pathway to self-reliance. Since its inception, GOSO has provided comprehensive job readiness training to all participants, providing the tools and guidance to help them enter the workforce.

Understanding the barriers that justice-involved people face in the job market, our GOSOWorks program connects participants with internship-to-employment opportunities to help level the playing field and assist our participants in earning full-time employment.

EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING A unique aspect of GOSO’s programming is our strong emphasis on mental health. Our staff of licensed social workers seeks to ensure that every participant has the support necessary to achieve their goals, avoid recidivism, and maintain their independence.

More than 50% of GOSO participants present with a mental health issue, such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, or a substance use disorder. Through assessment, individual and group psychotherapy, psychiatric evaluations, and referrals to more comprehensive treatment, our staff works with participants to address these issues so they can perform at their best in their community, in school, and on the job.

REENTRY SERVICES Rikers Island GOSO staff and interns recruit and provide supportive programming to eligible young men on Rikers Island. This includes those sentenced to relatively minor crimes (and who will complete their sentences on Rikers Island), as well as those detained on the Island awaiting adjudication of their cases. We primarily recruit in dorms, cells, and in the Department of Education schools across various Rikers Island jails. Our primary goal on Rikers Island is to recruit participants for our community program upon release. For sentenced participants, we are able to arrange appointments upon release as we know when they are returning to the community. For those who are unsentenced and have an uncertain release date, we focus on court advocacy. We provide supportive counseling in the context of this uncertainty and prepare some participants for potentially long prison sentences.

Adolescent Detention and Reentry With the adoption of Raise the Age legislation, which changed the age of adult criminal responsibility for most crimes in New York from 16 to 18, adolescents who were previously detained and/or incarcerated are now housed in adolescent detention facilities. There are two main facilities in New York City; Horizon in the Bronx and Crossroads in Brooklyn. Our long-term objective is to provide both recruitment and programming to Horizon and Crossroads, running workshops and groups, as well as reentry planning and care coordination.

Upstate Correspondence Upstate correspondence is the most cohesive and consistent program we offer to participants incarcerated in New York State Prisons. Many of our correspondents were participants in our Rikers Island or Adolescent Detention programs and were sentenced to Upstate prisons, and others have discovered GOSO while Upstate.

We also correspond with participants in Federal prisons and occasionally those on Rikers Island or in City jails. Through our letters, we provide emotional support to participants, some of whom have very long sentences, as well as encouragement to be productive while incarcerated. We send books and consistently counsel participants to work towards their high school equivalency diploma, college credits, and vocational certifications, and to maintain prison-based employment. As with our Reentry program as a whole, the goal is for participants to return home and join our community program, if they do not age out before they’re released (if they do age out, we refer them to another reentry program upon release.)

GOSO believes that planning for successful reentry starts the day someone is detained or incarcerated.

As such, GOSO has built a robust reentry program that seeks to recruit and support young men during their detention or incarceration, advocate for them in court and with parole boards, and help plan for effective reentry into the community.

COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICES Court Advocacy GOSO’s Community Program has been based in East Harlem since 2004 and is central to our mission of assisting participants to achieve their personal and professional goals while avoiding re-involvement in the criminal justice system.

Two-Week Job Readiness Curriculum Skills training is essential to our participants’ success.

Over two weeks, participants engage in 14 workshops that cover workforce basics. The curriculum culminates with participants— equipped with a resume, cover letter, and professional attire—completing a final interview. Individuals are then eligible to participate in all program opportunities and earn a $200 stipend.

GOSO assists participants in avoiding jail-time or reducing a potential sentence through court advocacy. Our participants may need to appear in court for a variety of reasons—we support them by engaging their attorneys, District Attorneys and judges, and by appearing in court on their behalf. We write hundreds of letters each year attesting to participants’ hard work, both in our program and in the community. Over the last decade, GOSO has earned a reputation with the courts, other community providers, government agencies and defense attorneys? as a program that provides effective services in lieu of jail or a prison sentence.

Adolescent Curriculum A modified version of our Two-Week Job Readiness Curriculum, Adolescent Curriculum is designed for 16- to 18-year-old participants who are full-time public school students. Adolescent Curriculum runs in the evenings during the school year and introduces students to a variety of employment and educational pathways.

Career Management and Mental Health Services GOSO is one of the few reentry programs staffed by licensed social workers to provide therapeutically-informed case management services. Each participant is assigned a social worker, known as a Career Manager, with whom they work on their goals. Our staff provides effective treatment in the form of individual or group psychotherapy to address the mental health issues experienced by our participants.

Everyday Resources Our East Harlem offices are safe places where participants can come and find basic, everyday support.

They can access new, clean clothing through our donation closet, along with hygiene products, furniture, and books from our library. We have a fully-stocked communal kitchen where our participants can refuel with a meal or snack, take food to a job site or back home. Participants have access to computers, phones, and printers during operating hours. We also provide vouchers for local barbershops so participants can get a haircut for an upcoming interview or event.

GOSOEd In collaboration with the Department of Education (DOE), GOSO has established Pathways-to-Graduation (P2G), a high school equivalency program at our Education Center. This class makes education more accessible to our participants by connecting them to educators and volunteer tutors along with breakfast, lunch, and MetroCards for transportation to and from class. Beyond our P2G class, we support participants who aspire to attend college by providing connections to help them to enroll in and pay for higher education.

Vocational Training and Certification

Utilizing funding from the City of New York, our employment program, GOSOWorks, connects participants to subsidized internship-to-employment (I2E) opportunities with about 100 businesses across NYC. GOSOWorks is a staffing solution available at no cost to employers for the first 240 hours of work, after which employers can hire our participants. Many of our participants are hired in full time jobs after going through the internship program. With our support, they become outstanding employees, ready to grow with the challenges of the job.

We offer free monthly vocational trainings on-site at GOSO, preparing participants for careers in industries like construction, maintenance, and warehousing.

Offerings include the OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification, Scaffolding and Flaggers certifications, 16Hour Security training, and Food Handlers Certification?.

We also cover the cost of professional licensing, like the NYS Security Guard license and the Drivers License Prelicensing training course. Training participants helps them be more prepared for jobs in industries such as NAME INDUSTRIES HERE, and earn higher salaries?

Housing and Benefits Program About half of GOSO participants are homeless or unstably housed, creating barriers to successful reentry. We recognize that success is not possible without a safe and affordable space to call home.

Our Housing Program connects participants to housing resources, such as grants, vouchers, and stipends; advocates for participants with housing court involvement; guides them through applications for affordable housing lotteries; and assists with identifying emergency shelter.

Leaders in Training (LIT) Program Through our Leaders in Training (LIT), GOSO participants develop skills needed to work in social services. LIT Ambassadors operate as peer mentors in our shared community, and are required to provide 10 hours of service to GOSO each week. They facilitate groups, assist new participants with job readiness, and provide general support. Through LIT, they complete six trainings to help them hone their skills.

The peer model brings our program full-circle, giving experienced participants the opportunity to guide others using the knowledge they’ve obtained at GOSO.

GOSOWORKS EMPLOYER PARTNERS

MANHATTAN

Our GOSOWorks employment program is backed by a strong network of about 100 employer partners across NYC who provide job opportunities to GOSO Guys. We have partners in a variety of industries ranging from food service and construction to creative arts and nonprofit. Each partner is helping us to combat discrimination that justice-involved people often face in the workforce, and by continuing to open doors for the young men with whom we work.

Dos Toros Dos Toros, a fast casual restaurant chain, is GOSOWorks’ largest employer partner, taking on an average of ten interns each year. Most of these interns earn full-time positions at Dos Toros post-internship. One GOSO alumnus, Michael V., is now a general manager after starting out in an internship placement. The company culture at Dos Toros is rooted in team-work, and there is always room for our participants to grow.

SportimeNY SportimeNY is a sports and fitness company, and our interns work at their facilities on Randall’s Island. Interns oversee the maintenance of the grounds, including the tennis courts and baseball fields. In the past year, all of our internship placements with Sportime have turned into fulltime employment opportunities.

In 2013, The Horticultural Society of New York (The Hort) became the first GOSOWorks employer partner. While working on Hort’s GreenTeam, our interns engage in different types of outdoor projects from planting in a plaza to installing gardens in supportive housing facilities and schools.

Our favorite thing about working with GOSO Guys is their willingness to put their all into their work. Through their strong work ethics and good attitudes, they set an example for their fellow team members.

Stand Against Violence East Harlem (SAVE) is GOSO’s Cure Violence Program, and its team works to reduce violence in our East Harlem community.

SAVE is a branch of the national Cure Violence program, which has sites across the U.S. The Cure Violence model seeks to stop the spread of violence by using the methods and strategies associated with disease control — detecting and interrupting conflicts, identifying and treating the highest risk individuals, and changing social norms.

SAVE Outreach Workers and Violence Interrupters proactively engage the community to prevent violence and gang involvement through outreach, community events, and mentoring. They also intervene after acute acts of violence in the area to prevent retaliation and seek to mediate. SAVE provides their own programming for community members and refers younger participants to GOSO if interested.

OUR STORIES My Education Goes Beyond a Classroom

Kailib Jenkins I first met Chelsea Kraimer (GOSO Senior Career Manager) when I was incarcerated on Rikers Island in 2016. All throughout my incarceration she visited me and stayed in contact with me — often sending me books and holiday cards so I knew someone cared. She also helped me navigate the court system so I could get out and come to GOSO as soon as possible.

When I came home from Rikers, I immediately started coming to GOSO. I quickly took advantage of the programs and obtained several licenses through the various vocational trainings. I also enrolled in the on-site school, which was a huge turning point in my life.

Enrolling in the GOSOEd program and earning my high school equivalency diploma has been my proudest accomplishment. To me, without an education, it’s hard to get by. I am thankful for the education staff who were so encouraging and invested in my success. I’ve learned that education is not just about informational knowledge — it’s also about self-control and being able to think and adapt quickly in different situations. Education means constantly pushing yourself to learn and be curious.

Now that I’m a graduate, I tutor other GOSO Guys who are enrolled in school. I want to help other people get their diploma, since so many people helped me. I tell them how important and life-changing having an education can be long-term.

Being at GOSO has changed my whole mindset.

Before this I had a more negative outlook, and now I look to the positives in everything. I’m able to think more clearly, and I use my intelligence over my emotions. I acknowledge my mistakes and proactively work to improve things. GOSO taught me to take any shortcomings I have as opportunities to grow and become better.

GOSO seems too good to be true when I tell people about it, but it really is this good. Everyone on staff genuinely wants to help and see everyone succeed. Everyone at GOSO feels like family. When I see all these people investing their energy into GOSO, it motivates me to want to dedicate my time to helping other people as well.

In the future I want to be able to continue to support others, and maybe even invest in GOSO to help expand their program to help people in more places. And I’ll still be learning. Always learning.

Growing as a Leader Isaiah Saunders

Before I came to GOSO, I truly was not doing anything with my time. My friend noticed this, and encouraged me to join the program. I was skeptical at first, but being in a new environment and seeing other people dedicating their time to helping others, made me want to do the same thing.

A huge thing that GOSO did for me was to help me realize my career goal. I used to have a lot of different ideas for what I wanted to do: I wanted to be a lawyer, a conductor for the MTA, a sanitation worker. That was until I got a job through GOSOWorks at the Johnson Community Center in East Harlem, where I get to work with kids. I quickly knew I had found my calling.

I love working with kids — I spend time with them after school tutoring or just having fun. I see a lot of myself in them, and that’s why I want to steer them in the right direction. I tell them my story of how I used to be in a gang, and how GOSO helped me realize that my potential and purpose could be so much greater than the streets. Right now, I’m in college studying early childhood education because I want to continue to be a mentor for young people by teaching kids professionally one day.

GOSO has helped me grow into the leader and role model that I am today, and will help me grow further into the best leader I can be. As a Leader in Training at GOSO, I get to mentor my younger peers and tell them about the importance of investing in work and school and making something of themselves.

Since coming to GOSO, my life has changed so much. I’m productive with my time, I’m more respectful to my family, and pay more attention to them. I have a job that allows me to put food on the table. I’ve realized that I can be a role model to others. I have a Career Manager who I can talk to about my life and who I know truly cares about me and my success. I had never been to a program that actually cared about me as a person. The people at GOSO didn’t see me as just another “client” — they see me as family. It inspires me to want to continue on the path I’m on and have that same impact on others.

Now, I’ve been at Littleneck for over a year, and I’m really proud of the work I do. I get to take on a lot of responsibility because my bosses and coworkers realize how hard I work. If the drain overflows, I can handle it; if there are dishes to be washed, I clean them; if there’s a customer who needs help, I step in. I just help out with anything that needs attention.

What I really love about my job is the people I work with.

The guys who founded and own the place are here taking care of their small business. They’re invested not only in the restaurant, but in everyone who works for them.

Finding Stability and Success through Employment Timothy R. A few years ago, I had just moved back to New York, and I was scrambling to find work. When I got caught up in the system, it made it even harder to get a job.

That’s when I discovered GOSO and I was interested because I knew they had helped a few friends of mine find good jobs. I applied to GOSOWorks straight away and was matched with an internship pretty quickly. Geoffrey Golia (the GOSOWorks Manager at the time), saw a lot of potential in me so he recommended me for a job at this restaurant called Littleneck Outpost in Brooklyn. I remember he was excited about it because it was down the street from where he lived. I couldn’t wait to get started.

GOSO giving me this opportunity has allowed me to experience true success. I’m still in the process of figuring out exactly what I want to do in the long term, but maintaining a solid job will help me no matter what. Even if I want to pursue my passion for music as a career one day, I like knowing I can have something else that’s reliable to help me along.

I’m grateful for GOSO because I always feel welcome to spend time here, whenever I need to. That’s a really big deal, even though a lot of people might not realize it. It sounds cliche but, you don’t know what anyone who comes here is going through or what their life is like. A lot of us are literally running from bullets or other dangerous situations. GOSO is our safe space, where we can go and feel comfortable. That is so important. On top of that, you can have so many great conversations with other people here; you’ll get a better understanding of how the world works. Everyone can use a different perspective sometimes.

I’ve benefited from GOSO in so many ways, and with the success I’ve found along with my confidence, I feel like the sky’s the limit!

CHANGING THE CONVERSATION A priority at GOSO is changing the conversation around criminal justice, starting with the language we use. By using humanizing, person-first language, we can more fully support the aspirations of our participants as well as others who are formerly-incarcerated and/or justice-involved.

Person-First Language Person-first language reminds us that people are not defined by their criminal background. They are people first, before anything else. In this way, person-first language humanizes individuals who have experienced marginalization and breaks down the stigma that separates people and communities.

Language has a lot of power — power to help and power to hurt.

Below you can find examples of person-first language, as well as language to avoid when discussing issues around incarceration and criminal justice involvement.

GOSO Participants GOSO is a fairly unique program. One reason is that the young men who are enrolled in our program are active and voluntary participants. In recognition of this, we use the term “participant” to refer to our guys, and encourage others to do the same.

Justice-Involved We use the term “justice-involved” because it is both humanzing and accurate when discussing the young men with whom we work. All young men at GOSO are participants; of those, many have had some kind of involvement in the criminal justice system, though not all have been incarcerated.

Formerly-Incarcerated and Returning Citizens While the term “formerly-incarcerated” is often used in our field, many have also started using the phrase “returning citizen.”

“Returning citizen” de-stigmatizes the experiences of those who have been incarcerated while emphasizing the goal of reintegration into the community and society.
