LETTER FROM OUR CEO
Big Brothers Big Sisters is part of the fabric of NYC.
There’s truly no place like New York City. Just look at our subway, where people from all walks of life share a tightly crowded space as they travel across the five boroughs. Moments like these highlight the commonalities we share as dedicated and hard-working New Yorkers. From my early days growing up in our City and throughout my career running youth organizations, I have benefited tremendously from strong mentorship. Without the investment of this caring group of individuals, I would not have realized my full potential. As they say, “if I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere” and I feel honored to pay it forward as the first female CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC. Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC is our nation’s first and our City’s largest youth mentoring organization. Like our City, we’re a community of diverse, caring, and inspiring individuals. Together, we have the experience, motivation, and compassion to serve our City’s young people by connecting them to committed adult mentors. And like our City, we know how to get things done. For me, leading an organization whose legacy is grounded in the power of mentoring and activated by the people of our great City is truly a dream come true. This is our moment to build the next generation of leaders. Together, we will create longer and stronger matches, positioning our Littles for success in college and beyond. Together, we will also continue to launch innovative programs and partnerships, taking our impact even further while honoring our foundation of building and supporting 1-to-1 matches. Your investment in our City’s youth underscores your belief in their biggest possible futures. Please join us in our continued efforts to ignite NYC’s potential and make a lasting impact on the youth in our City.
Warm regards,
Alicia D. Guevara Chief Executive Officer

LETTER FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT
As a Big, you get more than you give.
My involvement with Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC began a decade ago when a chance encounter with a Big and Little caused me to re-examine my role within the community and realize my own potential as a mentor. The encounter was brief but powerful. The Little was astonished to learn that I was Latin American and of Dominican descent, fluent in Spanish, and a lawyer at a very large, global, and prestigious firm. Her genuine surprise about that combination of characteristics made me realize that I needed to do much more to help kids in my community see and realize their full potential. That pivotal moment prompted me to join my firm’s Workplace Mentoring Program with Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City and to become a Big. Over the past ten years, I have mentored five extraordinary girls from different parts of the world: Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, Tibet, and Nepal. Despite their cultural differences, varied backgrounds and life stories, my Littles had a lot in common: some doubts and trepidations about the future and their ability to succeed; a strong work ethic; and determination, lying just beneath the surface, to beat the odds. Over the years, I have had the privilege of learning from them – much more I think than they have learned or gained from me. They learned more about themselves, their extraordinary resilience, and the strength that comes from their experiences. In turn, I learned to listen and to never underestimate the impact that a real, caring human connection can have on the trajectory of a person’s life. I grew with them and my life has been enriched by the experience. These five girls have now grown into strong, self-assured young women, leveraging the potential that always existed inside of them. One has earned a double Masters degree and is pursuing a successful career in Washington DC. Another is thriving academically in college and has a bright future ahead. The Little I am currently mentoring is already looking ahead to her college applications; her smile brightens any room tenfold. Witnessing the impact of mentorship firsthand has changed me forever and for the better. As Board President, I am truly proud of the impact we are having, and I look forward to our continued journey ahead as we help more kids across our City to realize their full potential. It is an honor to steward an organization that empowers our City’s next generation of leaders to believe in themselves. We cannot do this important and impactful work without you. Whether you are looking to start a Workplace Mentoring Program, volunteer to be a Big through our Community-Based Program, or make a financial contribution to our cause, you can take pride knowing it is your participation that brings our impact to life and makes our City better.
With sincere thanks,
Lucy M. Lopez Board President 7

THE BRONX Meet our Little Fernando and his Big Adam Fernando was a sophomore in high school when this pair was matched through our Workplace Mentoring Program, but he already knew he wanted to one day have a career in technology. He just wasn’t sure how to get there. Adam, Fernando’s Big, became a close ally during the final years of high school. When academic challenges arose, Adam worked closely with Fernando to improve his listening skills and cultivate the value of perseverance. And when Fernando started to consider colleges, Adam pointed him toward those with proven Computer Science programs. Adam, who’s worked at New York Life for over a decade, has spent this year showing Fernando how to write a thoughtful resume, nail a job interview and give an elevator pitch – skills Fernando will employ once he puts his passion for technology into practice.

BIGS IN BLUE Partnering with precincts in Brooklyn, the Bronx and Upper Manhattan, this collaboration with the NYPD creates and fosters positive conversations among police officers and youth. Bigs in Blue has grown exponentially from 1 precinct to 12 precincts in two years. This is a direct result of the program’s inclusion in the NYPD’s Neighborhood Policing strategies, which aims to help officers connect with the communities they serve. Since its inception, the Bigs in Blue program has served 122 youth with 41 officers. 9

BROOKLYN Meet our Little Allisson and her Big Reia When Allisson’s mom first learned about our Community-Based Program, she quickly enrolled Allisson’s older sister. As soon as Allisson heard about all the fun her sister was having, she told her mom she wanted to become a Little as well! From day one, Allisson and her Big Reia clicked. Their bond blossomed through a series of year-round adventures, like ice skating and painting in the winter, and roller skating and swimming in the summer. These outings took Allisson to parts of Brooklyn she’d never seen, expanding her horizons and enhancing her selfconfidence. Even though they’ve been matched for nearly two years, one thing is clear: there are many more adventures to come.
We go on adventures to places I might have never seen. - Allisson, age 9

Meet our Little Alex and his Big Jason
QUEENS
Alex is a go-getter. At school, he’s a straight-A student and the president of his student government. Outside of school, he volunteers at a nonprofit that inspires kids to get involved in community service. Jason, Alex’s Big, has always been impressed by these accolades but wanted to make sure Alex wasn’t running the risk of burnout. Looking back on his career at S&P Global, Jason shared stories with Alex about how to stay true to personal and life goals while managing professional commitments. Alex has found so much inspiration in our Workplace Mentoring Program. Now in his final year of high school, Alex is using Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC as a model for a peer mentorship program he’s launching at his school. Plus, Alex is working with Jason to find a college that reflects his go-getter spirit and embraces his passion for community service.

WORKPLACE
With Jason, I’ve had stability in a role model. It’s something I don’t normally get.
For over 25 years, our Workplace Mentoring Program has provided NYC high school students with the critical skills needed to achieve their full potential through a relationship with an invested career mentor. This year, 65 companies partnered with us, allowing almost 2,000 youth to be served. Across our partners, employees volunteered over 23,000 hours of their time to build career awareness, offer support in the college application process, and invest in the next generation of leaders.

MANHATTAN Meet our Little Tiffany and her Big Cyrene
When Tiffany and Cyrene were matched through our community-based program, Tiffany was only 10 years old. Back then, Tiffany struggled with her self-esteem and preferred to stay quiet. Her mom hoped that having a Big in her life would introduce another strong female role model. Their initial outing was the first time Tiffany left the house without her parents. Cyrene remembers Tiffany squeezing her hand tightly each time they crossed the street. When Cyrene got home that night, she started brainstorming activities that would take Tiffany out of her comfort zone. Their subsequent outings were a success! Before you knew it, Tiffany was able to navigate the subway system, ask for directions, and order food – all on her own. But this match isn’t done yet. Cyrene continues to encourage Tiffany to become even more brave and confident, so she’s planning to enroll her in a self-defense class.
Cyrene made me brave. - Tiffany, age 12
NEW AMERICAN PROGRAM The New American Program (NAP) ensures the power of mentoring is available to first- and secondgeneration immigrant youth. This year, 186 matches were served across New York City. The program aims to support these youth in building social capital in their local communities and celebrating their heritage. Littles in this program report increased academic self-confidence and advancement in social-emotional learning. 14

Her mom saw Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC’s Community-Based Program as a chance to fill this gap. Nisha constantly reminds Breana to open up about her mistakes so she can learn from them. Breana takes these words of wisdom with her everywhere she goes, viewing each challenge as an opportunity to grow.
