Dear partners and friends, Over the last couple of years, I’ve gotten to know so many community members. Many were first introduced to Grand Rapids Community Foundation as students. Some served as volunteers on our Youth Grant Committee, where they learned the basics of giving back through philanthropy. Others took part in arts and community programs led by our nonprofit partners. But most often, they received a scholarship that helped them achieve their education and career goals.

These conversations always make me reflect on my own education journey.

I’m one of six kids, and arts and sports mattered a lot to me growing up. They still matter to me now, as a working mother, grandmother and caretaker trying to find ways to fill my own cup while pouring into others. I completed my bachelor’s degree while raising three kids. Then I went back for my MBA in my 40s. I can vividly recall many nights spent studying and finishing homework after putting my kids to bed. My youngest daughter has her own family now, but she still remembers those nights too.

What I appreciate most about talking with our partners is how different everyone’s story is. And I love that the Community Foundation’s approach to education is not a one-size-fits- all plan. We offer scholarships. We connect students with support services through our many nonprofit and community partners, who together form our community’s education network. We also offer hands-on programs like our Youth Grant Committee and support other community opportunities. These let students learn and explore outside the classroom.

Every student has a unique journey and a powerful story. We want to support them and make their path a little easier. That’s why we created our new fasttrack scholarship application. It makes it easier for qualifying scholarship recipients to renew their award. This deep investment in our community’s scholars makes a real difference. It doesn’t just help students start their education journey—it helps them finish it.

I recently joined the Meijer team as they presented team members with scholarships from the Fred & Lena Meijer Scholarship Fund, a fund of the Community Foundation. For almost 50 years, Meijer has partnered with the Community Foundation to invest in its team members and their families.

The stories I heard were heartwarming, and they reminded me of so many community members—including myself. These scholarships can bring huge relief to someone juggling work, school and everyday life. It can truly change a student’s path through school.

In this issue, you will read about a young professional who has utilized Community Foundation scholarships throughout her college journey. We share examples of the many ways we support community arts and culture and how one donor partner has created a giving plan that reflects his values.

We also celebrate our Metz Legacy Society members who are each writing a unique story with their philanthropy.

HOW WE GIVE: Investing in a Future That Lasts Grand Rapids Community Foundation donor partners give in many ways. In the How We Give series, we share their stories.

These stories show how generosity helps West Michigan grow and thrive. As donors reach their philanthropic goals, good things happen. They help strengthen organizations they care about. They create more opportunity for others. And they help build a community where everyone feels welcome.

MEET TOM MERCHANT. For more than two decades, Tom has paired generosity with action. He supports causes that matter to him with his time, connections and resources. He believes that philanthropy is about investing in a better future. Tom shared his reasons for giving, and how his partnership grew over time, with Jessica Hermann-Wilmarth, vice president of development.

JESSICA: What experiences or people have shaped your views on giving back and philanthropy?

TOM: My parents and grandparents really shaped my thinking.

Education, hard work and helping others were important family values. There was always a conversation about how fortunate we were and how to create opportunities, hoping each generation would do a little better than the one before it. And they took action to make a positive impact through their work and volunteering.

JESSICA: How did you become involved in the Grand Rapids community?

TOM: When I moved to Grand Rapids in the late 1980’s, working at Old Kent Bank was a strong influence. It was pivotal in the community, focusing on community growth wellness and welfare.

I had never worked somewhere where people were so invested in helping a city grow and thrive. Being part of Grand Rapids during a period of transformation helped me understand the impact of supporting education growth, health initiatives, safe communities and the impact of supporting vulnerable groups.

JESSICA: What drew you to Grand Rapids Community Foundation?

TOM: Around 2002, I became involved through the Social Ventures Fund. That experience was my education about the Community Foundation. I saw an organization willing to support issues and communities that weren’t always the most visible or popular. The Community Foundation had a way of identifying unmet needs and bringing people together to address them. That’s what hooked me.

JESSICA: You were an early supporter of Our LGBTQ Fund, which has now awarded more than $500,000 in grants. What inspired your backing of that effort?

TOM: The focus of the fund on youth experiencing homelessness was, and is, important to me, and the Community Foundation helped shine a light. The fund is large enough to broaden and take care of some other issues in the community now. As it grows, I have been a strong believer that advocating, giving money and talking about why you give are all important.

JESSICA: As someone who supports arts organizations, what is your view of the importance of the arts?

TOM: Art is everywhere in West Michigan. We are fortunate to have assets that many communities our size don’t have, from public art to organizations like the Grand Rapids Ballet, Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park and the Grand Rapids Art Museum. I’ve spent years volunteering with GRAM and Meijer Gardens because those are places where I can make an impact as well as make new friends. The arts help make West Michigan the vibrant community it is today.

JESSICA: Why have you chosen to partner with the Community Foundation?

TOM: As you get older, you think about what will last beyond your lifetime. What’s important to me is partnering with organizations I trust to be here long after I’m gone. I see the Community Foundation distributing funds from people who gave 50 or more years ago. Having confidence that my support can continue helping future generations means a great deal to me.

CULTIVATING ARTS AND CULTURE

Across Our Community

Arts and culture help make West Michigan special. They give people of all ages and backgrounds a chance to connect, celebrate who they are and feel they belong. They also help people learn more about the world around them. Artists, institutions and cultural experiences bring our community together.

Grand Rapids Community Foundation supports arts and engagement efforts in many ways. We know how important this is for creating a more equitable and vibrant community. Here are some examples that show how our partnerships use creativity and culture to strengthen connections, enrich lives and make our region uniquely its own.

Partnering with the Community Foundation offers access to the strength and flexibility of a diversified investment portfolio. Last year around $4 million went to nonprofits from these funds to help support their work.

Investments through Donor Advised funds The Community Foundation also manages 230 Donor Advised funds, which together make up about a quarter of our total assets.

They have huge potential to impact our community. Donor advisors—the people who set up these funds—recommend which nonprofits receive grants. Many choose to support local arts and cultural organizations.

Last year, DAFs recommended more than 1,400 grants to organizations in West Michigan and beyond. Many of these grants supported arts and culture nonprofits. Some of the top supported were Grand Rapids Art Museum, Grand Rapids Public Museum, Grand Rapids Symphony and WGVU Public Media.

Growing partnerships in the arts Ebony Road Players works with youth and community members through theater. Their programs teach about Black history, storytelling and real-life experiences.

After years of partnership through other funds, we recently awarded Ebony Road Players $200,000 through the Fund for Community Good, the Community Foundation’s largest grant to the organization. The grant shows the strength of the relationship built over time and supports their everyday operations and future planning. This partnership includes support from the Leonard and Eileen Newman Fund, a Field of Interest fund set up in 2014 to nourish the arts, especially the performing arts, in the Greater Grand Rapids community.

Each group uses its funds in their own ways. But for all of them, the endowment creates a permanent source of support. The Community Foundation invests the funds, and the organization has access to an annual distribution that can be used to advance their mission.

Leaving lasting legacies West Michigan is filled with people committed to investing in arts and culture during their lifetime and beyond. Fred Sebulske is one of them. Theater has shaped Fred’s whole life. He’s been a teacher, director, community volunteer and philanthropist. Fred helped start Actor’s Theatre and plans to keep supporting it through a gift from his estate. He also played an important role in establishing the Grand Rapids Combined Theatre Scholarships at the Community Foundation.

Providing support for institutions Many local institutions partner with the Community Foundation through an endowment for their organization. We hold nearly 200 Nonprofit Endowed funds, including funds for Girls Choral Academy and many other arts organizations.

SUPPORT STUDENTS C a n Co u nt O n Meet Kennia “I love school,” says Kennia Cifuentes, a young professional working at Fifth Third Bank. She is close to earning her third degree, an MBA from Ferris State University, after earning an associate’s from Grand Rapids Community College and her bachelor’s in economics from the University of Michigan.

Fast-track to the Finish Line Providing support for education has been central to our work since 1945, when we set up scholarships to address a local shortage of nurses following World War II. The Community Foundation remains responsive to the needs of our community and our students by making college and career training more affordable.

As Kennia nears the 10th anniversary of her high school graduation from Grand Rapids University Preparatory Academy, she and her family have reflected on how far she’s come. “They’re like, ‘Oh my God, Kennia. You see how this has paid off? You have flexibility—a lot of people don’t have that.’” They see how her degrees have given her choice in how she wants her life to look, personally and professionally.

“I’m working on my master’s right now, and I’m like, ‘How am I gonna pay this?’ Grad school is so much more expensive. I’m not even living on campus, and just one class can be $2,500. That’s double from undergrad,” Kennia said.

Facing The Numbers Still, college and graduate school can be daunting.

Alongside studying and earning good grades, many students also face big bills and systemic barriers.

Instead of counting herself out, Kennia has strategically navigated a system of resources to help her achieve her goals. She began building her network at UPrep. When Kennia was a senior, Principal Kenyatta Hill-Hall connected her to scholarships at Grand Rapids Community Foundation.

Principal Hill-Hall also serves on one of the nine Community Foundation scholarship selection committees. She said, “because I work in the industry of education, I’m also helping inform those who are sitting at the selection table. I continue to share stories of scholars who have the aspiration, but have financial challenges, being the first in their families to navigate these systems.”

This year, alongside 172 other students, Kennia was invited to fill out our new fast-track application. This shorter application allowed last year’s recipients to verify their eligibility for renewal without filling out the full general application each year. Re-awarding scholarships is a best practice that increases students’ likelihood of earning their degree or credential; the fast-track application makes it easier and less time-consuming for students to get the scholarship we already know they’re eligible for.

“This year we had the fast track, and it was super easy.

I liked it a lot, especially being in grad school and working full-time,” Kennia says.

Students can count on us to make college more affordable and scholarship applications more accessible. This helps them focus on what matters to them.

This grant supports the organization’s core operations, helping sustain youth development, resident leadership, grassroots partnerships, and communitycentered systems change strategies. This partnership includes support from the Robert D. Mieras Fund for Dance and Music and the Estate of Annette Richards.

Greater Grand Rapids NAACP, $300,000 The Greater Grand Rapids NAACP works to advance racial equity by influencing policies, systems, and institutions that shape community outcomes.

This grant supports the organization’s core operations, strengthening its ability to lead advocacy, legal redress, and coalition-building efforts that drive long-term, systemic change across West Michigan.

Fair Housing Center of West Michigan, $75,000 Fair Housing Center of West Michigan works to eliminate housing discrimination and promote inclusive communities through education, advocacy and enforcement. As the region’s leading fair housing organization, it helps residents understand and exercise their rights while addressing systemic barriers to housing choice. This grant supports efforts to expand fair housing access and strengthen housing opportunity throughout Kent County. This partnership includes support from the Homeless Prevention Endowment Fund.

LINC UP, $10,000 Supporting LINC UP’s efforts to reduce systemic employment barriers by providing expungement services, legal navigation, and workforce coaching that connects community members to sustainable career pathways.

Kent County Nonprofit Leader Sabbatical Fund, $100,000 To support a collaborative effort among local funders to provide nonprofit leaders with dedicated time for reflection, learning and renewal.

Michigan Justice Fund, $150,000 Michigan Justice Fund is a statewide funding collaborative working to improve justice outcomes and expand opportunity for people impacted by the criminal legal system. Through grantmaking, partnership and policy-focused efforts, the fund supports community-led solutions that reduce barriers and strengthen pathways to economic mobility. Migrant Legal Aid, $50,000 Migrant Legal Aid (MLA) advances systems-level change by addressing the policies, practices, and power dynamics that enable exploitation in the agricultural workforce. Through free, high-quality legal services and trusted, community-based outreach, MLA helps migrant workers safely engage with systems that have historically excluded or harmed them, strengthening accountability across labor, immigration, and public safety systems.
