1st March - got to be one of my favourite dates. Although I know we may still have some bad weather to come, March does sound like Spring! Our February meeting was very well attended and we all enjoyed an entertaining and informative lecture by Harry Baldwin. We now know why in some years we are knee deep in acorns and other years there are virtually none - it’s all to do with a seven year cycle. This month we are delighted to announce that Matthew Wilson will be coming to speak to us. Many of you, I am sure will have listened to his words of wisdom on Gardeners Question Time. Matthew is an award-winning garden and landscape designer, writer, radio and television broadcaster and lecturer. He has designed two show gardens at the RHS Mathew Wilson Chelsea Flower Show. In 2016, his show garden, entitled ‘God’s Own Country – A Garden for Yorkshire’ was sponsored by Welcome to Yorkshire, and was inspired by the East Window at York Minster, the largest single expanse of medieval stained glass in Britain. The garden showcased the wealth of stunning scenery, iconic heritage, deeprooted industries and skilled tradespeople that Yorkshire has to offer. His garden won the esteemed People’s Choice Award at the show. And his talk will all be about getting a show garden ready for Chelsea and is entitled ‘My Chelsea Story’ This is one of our Key Note lectures and members can attend at no additional charge to their membership fee, however should you wish to bring a guest, there will be a charge of £8. Guests who are members of inter-village clubs will be charged £5 for the event.

The meeting will be held in Grayshott Village Hall on Wednesday March 9th 2022 Doors open at 7.15pm ready for the lecture to begin at 8pm.

If you are not a member and would like to join a friendly and enthusiastic group of gardeners please contact our membership secretary Jane Jones for more details

GRAYSHOTT ANTIQUES: LOCK UP YOUR DECANTERS Grayshott Antiques : Lock Up Your DecantersGrayshott Antiques : Lock Up Your Decanters

Zeus is known to have spawned some of the most prominent names in Greek mythology but within any family there’s often a black sheep, and Zeus’ son Tantalus was one such disappointment. Tantalus was a wrong ‘un. He’s said to have revealed the secrets of the gods, stolen nectar and ambrosia from them and offended them by killing, cooking and serving his own son to them as a ‘taste test’. His punishment in the underworld was to stand up to his neck in water, which flowed away from him when he tried to drink it. When he tried to grasp the fruits hanging above his head the wind would waft them away. But he didn’t exit without a legacy, his failure to satisfy his desires is the verb tantalise, and, indirectly, the tantalus. A tantalus is a small wooden rack which contains two or three cut or engraved glass decanters. Its defining feature is that the frame has a lock and key which allows the decanters to be on show, but which stops them being removed from the frame, or having their stoppers removed, unless the key is used to unlock it. It was first patented in 1881 by George Betjemann, whose Huguenot family had been cabinet makers for generations and had specialised in dressing cases, jewellery and game boxes. In Summoned by Bells, the autobiography of George Betjemann’s grandson the poet Sir John Betjeman (who had no interest in taking on the family business), the tantalus was described as the source of the family’s fortune. Known as the ‘Butler’s Enemy’ one apocryphal story is that the tantalus was designed to keep the servants away from the whisky, but that’s thought unlikely given they already had access to well stocked cellars. More likely the tantalus was one of many novelty items which became popular with the expanding and increasingly affluent middle class in the latter part of the nineteenth century. Not having servants themselves they could impress their guests with the grand gesture of unlocking of their much-prized liquor. Just so long as they didn’t lose the key.
