Board Briefs Grayhawk Master Association Board of Directors Meeting – September 11, 2017 Development Committee David Van Omen reported that he and Community Manager Michael Fee had met with the Floodplain Administrator from the City of Scottsdale as well as representatives from the engineering firm retained by the Grayhawk Community Association, Wood Patel, regarding the Rawhide Wash Floodplain. The City of Scottsdale requested verbiage from Wood Patel regarding floodplain mitigation, which was provided and approved by the City of Scottsdale.

The next step will be to submit the report to FEMA for exclusion of Grayhawk homes from the Rawhide Wash Floodplain.

Operational Review Committee Michael Fee reported that the committee did not meet in August.

Landscape Committee Arlene Smith reported that the committee did not meet in August. Regular maintenance has been taking place.

Arlene shared photos she had taken of work that Grayhawk’s landscape maintenance contractor DLC Resources completed in the Deer Valley Channel.

Representatives from DLC Resources spoke regarding the increase in minimum wage rate in Arizona and how it has impacted their staffing. They shared that in a field where there is extremely high turnover, Grayhawk has been lucky to retain many of their on-site DLC Resources staff for five years or more. With increasing wages, they are asking amend the existing landscape

maintenance contract with the GCA. A motion was made an approved to amend the current landscape maintenance contract amount by 2% in 2018, an additional 2.7% in 2019 and 3.4% in 2020. This will extend the current contract through 2020.

Community Enhancement Committee Bob Mann reported that there was not a meeting in August.

Event Planning Committee Sarah Van Duyne reported that approximately 150 people attended the Back to School Bash held at Grayhawk Elementary School. Everyone really loved the kid DJ, and the GCA will likely have him back at future events.

There were 20 people at the Android Tutorial Class with Jeff Toomey. There are about the same number signed up for the upcoming Internet Safety Class.

Other upcoming events include Stargazing and Beer Yoga.

Communications Committee Jennifer Sheets introduced Barb Nelson as the committee representative. The committee recently met to review their final two proposals for a new website provider submitted by Clubessential and Civic Plus.

Barb shared that Jennifer and the committee had put in a lot of work reviewing the options and ultimately felt that Civic Plus was the best fit for the GCA. Jennifer

noted that the committee’s number one goal was to find a provider that could be more mobile friendly since our current provider does not offer responsive design. In addition, the new site is custom rather than template-based. Staff will be able to build pages by a drag-and-drop method, which will help streamline website updates.

The new website will take up to eight months to build and go live. The committee is recommending that the first year development cost be paid from the GCA Community Enhancement Fund.

Additionally, the committee proposed funds to be set aside for new imagery to be used on the site. Moving forward, the maintenance fees, which will be $4,000 in the second year and $4,000 +5% in the third year, will be paid from the operating budget.

A motion was made and approved to accept the Civic Plus proposal for website development and maintenance, with the contingency that the Community Enhancement Committee approves the development cost of to be paid from the GCA Community Enhancement Fund. The motion included up to $25,000 to be paid from GCA Community Enhancement Fund for the development cost for the new website ($14,500) and the cost of photography and video to be used on the site.

The Communications Committee also made the recommendation to create a line item for communications related expenses in the 2018 operating budget. This will allow for more transparency with communications costs and for additional needs to be met.

Architectural Review Committee Paul Alessio reported that there were two meetings in August with a total of nine submittals.

Budget/Finance Committee Jeanette Griswold reported that the committee met with D.J. Vlaming from Association Reserves to discuss the reserve study updates. Mr. Vlaming conducted an on-site reserve study update for both the GCA and RVA in which he inspected all of the reserve study components.

The committee asked for the useful life of the monument signs and street signs to be revised, as the renovation to these components is scheduled to be funded in 2018 out of the GCA Community Enhancement Fund.

The committee also reviewed the Pinnacle neighborhood reserve study update. Although the Pinnacle reserve fund is currently very well funded, it was recommended to increase the reserve funding in the 2018 Pinnacle budget.

A motion was made and approved to accept the GCA and Pinnacle reserve study updates as prepared by Association Reserves.

Executive Committee Michael Fee reminded members that the Strategic Planning meeting is scheduled to be held on October 16.

New Business Michael Fee presented two holiday light proposals from Custom Holiday Lights. The first was identical to the 2016 proposal which includes holiday light displays at the major intersections in the Park section of Grayhawk as well as the neighborhood and condominium development monument signs.

The second proposal includes installing LED lights at major intersections along Thompson Peak Parkway at Scottsdale Road, Hayden Road, Grayhawk Drive and Pima Road. The proposal also includes new garland being installed at all of the monument signs.

This garland would replace the existing garland, which is over 10 years old. The garland is a one time cost.

A motion was made and approved to accept the proposal from Custom Holiday Lights for this year’s holiday lights to be funded through the GCA Community Enhancement Fund.

Management Report Michael Fee reported that a postcard was mailed on September 11 to all homeowners who have not already voted in the CC&R amendment ballot. Mr. Fee also reported that the common area wall and fence painting project in the Coventry at Grayhawk, Coventry at the Park, and Windsong neighborhoods has been completed.

Multitasking Mother – Making Girl Scout Volunteering a Must

Lisa Rodi is a genius when it comes to multitasking. And when you’re a mother, college student and Girl Scout Troop Leader, multitasking is a must.

The decision to become a Troop Leader was an easy one for Rodi to make.

“I was a Girl Scout for 10 years and I have nothing but fond memories, which is the main reason I wanted to get my daughter involved,” said Rodi, who is a Troop Leader just north of Grayhawk in Paradise Hills. “When my daughter first started school, there wasn’t a Daisy Troop yet in the area. Luckily, another parent and I were able to establish a troop. That was six years ago. Now, I solely lead the Paradise Hills neighborhood troops for 4th, 5th and 6th grade girls at Pinnacle Peak Preparatory School.”

While this additional responsibility may seem like a lot, according to Rodi, the time she allocates to volunteering with the Girl Scouts is very manageable. As the Troop Leader, she is able to make her own schedule, allowing her the flexibility that’s needed in order to make her time volunteering enjoyable.

“As long as the girls keep coming back, excited to learn more about themselves, the outdoors and what it means to be a leader, that’s all I need to stick with it,” said Rodi.

“Getting a group of young girls interested in something new and challenging is absolutely priceless.”

In addition to the benefits that the girls receive from the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, from developing selfconfidence to acquiring skills that can be used in the real world, volunteering with the Girl Scouts has proven to be a great way to make life-long friends, learn new skills and can even help you live longer.

In Rodi’s case, the benefits of being a Troop Leader also involve the new STEM program that the Girl Scouts– Arizona Cactus-Pine Council (GSACPC) has established in conjunction with the completion of The Bob & Renee Parsons Leadership Center for Girls & Women at Camp South Mountain. This center is an $18 million year-round urban program center that is fully ADA accessible, and has increased the local council’s capacity to serve more girls with relevant programming,

from aquatics to STEM. With this increased ability to serve comes an increased need for volunteers.

“I’m all about the new STEM program,” said Rodi. “Not only is it teaching young girls skills that weren’t available to me as a child, it attracts an entirely new set of girls to GSACPC. I love the diversity of the Girl Scouts and I love that it continues to teach me new things as an adult. I’m able to tie in the skills that I’m learning at DeVry with the programs that GSACPC are putting on for the girls, which only adds to the value of being a Girl Scout Volunteer.”

As a Girl Scout Volunteer, adds Rodi, local mothers and women have the chance to introduce girls to new experiences and help them unleash their inner G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader) to take the lead and change the world.

“You’ll be their cheerleader, guide, and mentor, helping them develop crucial skills and confidence to launch them into a lifetime of leadership. Imagine the excitement, the memories made, and the impact—this is what you’ll share as a Girl Scout Volunteer,” said Rodi.

As part of a network of nearly one million adults, you’ll share an important commitment to preparing girls to lead successful lives. A volunteer serves as a partner and role model for girls. In the process, you’ll discover your own skills and abilities, meet new people, and learn through experience.

What are the benefits of volunteering for Girl Scouts?

Girl Scout research shows it is not just girls who benefit from participating in Girl Scouts: 94 percent of volunteers have made new friends, 88 percent believe their life is better because they volunteer with Girl Scouts, and two-thirds believe their volunteer experience has helped them professionally. Also, 95 percent of Girl Scout volunteers are happy knowing they are making girls’ lives better.

Is there a way to volunteer “sometimes?”

Yes! Extra adults are always needed for trips and special events, as well as for Girl Scout Cookie activities.

We will meet in the GCA office at 8 a.m., go over some quick instruction, and then we will start walking the trails.

The walk will be approximately 1 mile each direction, a little over 2 miles in total after both sides of the road are cleaned. All volunteers 17 years of age and under must come with a guardian. This is a great way to complete community service hours for school. We are only able to accommodate the first 20 volunteers who register. Our Desert, Our Home Full Sun? Not So Fast!

By Victoria Kauzlarich, Volare Last month’s column featured plant descriptions that are two desert myths: “suitable for zone 9” and “drought tolerant”. In the Sonoran, all bets are off when it comes to plant descriptions for two reasons: our aridity and our extreme heat in the summer.

There is another description that SHOULD cause us to be wary: “full sun”. While some native plants can tolerate multiple 118 degree non-stop sunny days, not all of them can. Cacti burn, agaves bleach, and even native shrubs shrivel and die. Non-native plants particularly leafy ones - cannot survive these conditions. So, buyer beware. If a plant at your favorite big box store is labeled “full sun”, cast a skeptical eye - you’re not in Kansas anymore.

Shifting Microclimates What is really happening here is that our microclimates are changing. The number of hours of daily sun hasn’t changed, but the intensity of the sunlight has. Some of the plants in these areas have adapted all they can. They’ve reached a tipping point and, if left in place, will surely die.

Even the hardiest native plants have difficulty tolerating multiple 118 degree days. This summer’s streak of brutal temperatures challenged my mantra of “plant what works”. As conditions continue to change, “what works” continues to change, too.

The Full Sun Misnomer Sedum is a classic example of a “full sun” plant that has no business in the desert. Sedum is a large genus of plants that includes nearly 500 species. These plants have succulent leaves and come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes - everything from ground-covers to beautiful bushy shrubs. Their leaves store water. They like heat, but not cold and show up in big box stores every fall to tempt us mightily. Virtually all of these plants are “suitable for zone 9”, “drought tolerant” and require “full sun”. The only problem is that they will not grow here unless you want to treat them as an annual or grow them as a house plant.

Reflected Heat Making matters worse is our old friend, reflected heat. Our sidewalks, yard walls, rocks and exterior house walls make a lovely backdrop for plants, but they are also sources of reflected heat.

When the temperatures soar, so does the intensity of heat stored in these hard surfaces. Reflected heat can bleach cactus skin. It can cook most Aloes, Elephant Food and nearly all Euphorbias. Make sure you ask your local nursery about a plant’s tolerance for reflected heat before you buy.

Plant of the Month This month’s plant, the Chain Fruit Cholla, is a native and thrives in full sun in the most dire of conditions. I love the look of this plant but use caution when deciding where to plant it. These get big and must be located away from foot traffic, browsing house pets and curious toddlers. If you’ve got a nice big space this can fill, you will be rewarded with a nearly endless conversation piece.

Teddy Bear Cholla, A Sonoran Native

There are many features of this Cholla that make it distinctive.

First, it grows into a tree-like shape. Second, unlike other cacti, it retains its fruit from one season to the next which produces unusual clusters. Third, like the Teddy Bear Cholla, the spines are pearlescent which makes the cactus glow regardless of the sun’s direction.

Finally (also like the Teddy Bear), this cactus’ segments are weakly attached, making them hazardous if you brush up against them.

This is why experienced Arizona hikers carry a comb with them to dislodge the “jumping” cholla segments from delicate skin.

Chollas propagate by dropping their segments which then take root and produce new plants. If you look closely at the photo of the Teddy Bear Cholla above, you’ll see segments littering the ground beneath the plant. In the wild, these plants create mini-cholla forests with scores of smaller plants sprouting from these individual segments, often many feet from the parent plant.

By Sue Lukenbill, Encore Resident October brings with it our final stretch of hot weather, but also the first hints of Arizona Fall. I love the cooler mornings and being able to finally enjoy sunsets from my patio. It’s also a sports lovers dream, as football is in full swing and the World Series is fast approaching. This time of year I’m really starting to remember why I love living here.

If you know me, then you know I love all of the days/weeks/ months that we dedicate to food throughout the year. Did you know that in October, we happen to celebrate one of the most universal foods? It’s one that is definitely a favorite of mine. You guessed it- October is National Pizza Month! It’s a time to celebrate all things crusty and gooey, thin and deep dish and everything in between.

To celebrate this very special month-long holiday, Grayhawk’s Director of Communications Jennifer Sheets and I headed over to the recently opened MidiCi at Desert Ridge Marketplace for lunch.

Ironically (although not on purpose) we happened to have lunch there on National Cheese Pizza Day. MidiCi is a fast-casual restaurant with a striking design. The 3,500-square-foot restaurant can seat 100 people inside and 25 to 30 on the patio. The space is quite unique because it is round and features a 33-foot ceiling with skylights. A central feature in all MidiCi restaurants is a live olive tree.

The activity behind the curling counter can be fun to watch as the employees bustle around topping pies, building salads, plating burrata, and stretching dough made from Italian double-zero flour before your eyes. You will notice two gold-tiled, beehive-shaped pizza ovens. They were built in Naples by a family that has been in the business for three generations. It is interesting to note that the ovens burn at 1,000 degrees, cooking pizza in roughly 90 seconds.

You order at MidiCi much like you would at somewhere like Chipotle or Café Zupas, moving through a line to order appetizers, pizzas, salads and drinks. The food, however, is brought to your table by staff. MidiCi offers an elevated fast-casual menu. I was impressed with their appetizer options, which included Meat and Cheese Boards and Fresh Artisan Burrata Plates.

The roster of salads is extensive. I think I counted 11 options.

They offer everything from a Caesar Salad to Purple Kale and Ricotta or Rock Shrimp and Avocado. The pizza menu is no different. The range includes the standard Margherita, but also pizzas like Egg and Bacon, and Truffle and Vegetable. The menu does include both a vegan and gluten-free pizza option as well.

I think the most brilliant thing about MidiCi is not the pizza itself, but all the gratis toppings. MidiCi has a sidebar where a

bounty of toppings awaits: fresh basil, dry wild oregano, chopped garlic, chile-infused oil, and the list goes on and on.

I chose the white pizza under the Classic Neapolitan Pizza list because I wanted a white sauce. It came with fresh mozzarella, parmesan, basil, oregano, and extra virgin olive oil. I added mushrooms, green bell peppers, and olives. I know I was boring, but it was very good, and I enjoyed it. Jennifer ordered the popular Devil’s Pizza with Italian tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, homemade spicy sausage, spicy Italian salami, Fresno chiles, parmesan, basil, and extra virgin olive oil. It is advertised as very spicy. We also sampled the Burrata with melon and prosciutto. It was burrata, cantaloupe, prosciutto and extra virgin olive oil with balsamic reduction and wood-fire toasted bread. The presentation was amazing and the food was very fresh and tasty. We both had plenty left over!

MidiCi carries draft, can, global and local beers. The wine menu has some nicely offbeat and well-priced varietals. In addition to good coffee, tea, and gelato selections, dessert includes colorful options like their Instagram-ready Nutella-and-Berry Calzone.

Currently, there are six MidiCi locations across the U.S., with 25 scheduled to open soon. Craig Early, the local owner, says that “Compared to other mid-tier pizza chains, MidiCi is more upscale.

Instead of fast-casual, it’s ‘fast-fine,’ minus the white tablecloths, of course.” He is proud of his pizza chain by further saying that “Other pizza chains aren’t designed as a place to hang out. You go in, you eat, you leave. MidiCi is a place to meet friends and stay a while.”

I am inclined to agree with him.

Still Sweet and Salty Low Carb Italian Grilled Chicken!

By Lori Bosch and daughter, Stephanie, Cachet at Grayhawk Steph and I try to be healthy on a daily basis and avoid overindulging in too many fattening foods, sweets, and wine…but let’s face it, sometimes we all overdo it and gain a few extra pounds. I could blame Local Bistro and their amazing bread and pasta (and I will blame them a little), but it really is my own fault.

I don’t believe in weighing myself daily so I try to just gauge my weight by how I look and how my clothes fit. But yoga pants are very forgiving and somehow always make you feel thin! Recently, I was at the point of having to go up a size in jeans or gulp!...cut back.

The only way that I have ever been able to shed extra pounds is by eating very few carbohydrates and following the Atkins diet. I’m pretty religious about it and if I don’t cheat for 2-3 weeks I will lose 5-10 pounds. If you’re not familiar with the Atkins diet the first, very strict phase limits you to about 20 carbs per day and your daily allotment of food includes as much meat or fish as you want; 2-3 cups of low carb vegetables (asparagus, broccoli, lettuce, cucumber, etc.); a couple tablespoons of butter or olive oil; an egg or two; 2-4 ounces of cheese, and that’s about it!

So even though it isn’t easy to resist other snacky, chippy, crunchy, chocolatey, delicious foods, it IS a simple diet to follow because the food list is so limited. About 10 days into my recent diet I was craving pizza, lasagna, or anything Italian. So I came up with

this Italian grilled chicken recipe which only has about 5 carbs per serving, and it really hit the spot! I usually make my own tomato sauce, but I don’t know how many carbs it contains so I kept it simple and used Rao’s tomato sauce which is available online and at Target and only has 2 net carbs per ½ cup.

Also, when you’re dieting it is extra important to use as many organic ingredients as possible so that you get the maximum amount of nutrition. If you have some extra weight you would like to lose, I recommend you learn about the Atkins diet, but always check with your doctor first.

I recommend you always, always, always live your life to the fullest and enjoy delicious food! The next time I am in Grayhawk, I will definitely be partaking in bread, pasta and wine at all of the amazing restaurants nearby…and then I’ll cut back on carbs and calories for a week or two when I get back to Michigan.

Low Carb Italian Grilled Chicken!

Total time: 30 minute, makes 2 portions Ingredients: • 2-3 organic chicken breasts • 2 medium green zucchinis • 4 tablespoons olive oil (reserve 1 tablespoon for zucchini) • Juice of ½ lemon • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced • salt & pepper • Rao’s Marinara or Arrabbiata tomato sauce (from Target)

1. Marinate chicken breasts in 3 tablespoons olive oil, lemon juice and garlic for 30 minutes 2. Grill chicken for approximately 10-12 minutes on medium high until cooked through, then set aside and cool for 5 minutes to let juices disperse 3. While chicken is grilling, sauté sliced zucchini in 1 tablespoon olive oil on medium heat for 4-5 minutes, season with salt & pepper and place in bottom of casserole dish 4. Cut grilled chicken into strips and layer over zucchini

• 3-4 slices fresh mozzarella cheese

5. Heat 1 cup of Rao’s tomato sauce in saucepan for about 5-10 minutes, to thicken and reduce liquid, then pour over grilled chicken

• Fresh grated Parmesan cheese from deli section

6. Top with mozzarella and parmesan and bake in 350 degree oven for 10-12 minutes or until cheese is golden and melted
