Manager’s Corner
After 19 years at Grayhawk, it is with a full heart that I share the news of my departure. This community has been more than just a place to work –it has been a home away from home – filled with many great memories, laughter, and countless moments of joy.
I have had the privilege of building meaningful relationships with residents, vendors, committee and Board Members, and each connection has left a lasting impact on my life. The sense of belonging and camaraderie here is something truly special, and I will forever be grateful for the experiences we have shared. While change can be bittersweet, I find comfort in knowing that the friendships I’ve built will undoubtedly continue, and I look forward to staying connected with many of the wonderful people who have made my time here so meaningful.
As I embark on this next chapter, I am excited to bring the same passion and dedication to my new community, which happens to be just minutes from my home. While my day-to-day surroundings may change, the lessons I’ve learned during my time at Grayhawk will remain constant. Thank you, Grayhawk, for 19 years of unwavering support, kindness, and joy. This isn’t goodbye, but rather a heartfelt “see you later.”
Best regards,
Executive Director, Grayhawk

How Your Community Runs
Running a community with 3,784 homes and over 200 acres of common area is no small feat. It takes many dedicated individuals working together to ensure that Grayhawk stays viable. The Board of Directors, management team and committees all work together toward this common goal.
The Role of the Board of Directors
Both the Grayhawk Community Association (GCA) and Retreat Village Association (RVA) Board of Directors are volunteers elected by homeowners in Grayhawk to act on the homeowner’s behalf. The role of the Board of Directors includes creating and enforcing policies and governing documents fairly, overseeing finances, maintaining shared spaces, protecting assets and addressing homeowner concerns. The Board of Directors also makes decisions on taxes, insurance, legal processes, vendors and much more. The limitations and restrictions of the powers of the Board of Directors are outlined in the governing documents.
The Board of Directors also oversees the management company, CCMC, which in turn handles day-to-day operations, oversees contractors, implements policy, manages budgets and enforces covenants.
Grayhawk Committees
In addition to the Board of Directors, Grayhawk utilizes various resident volunteer committees that help facilitate processes, programs, and more within the community. These committees make recommendations to the Board of Directors. All are incredibly vital in our work together to make Grayhawk a great place to live.
Committee members are appointed by the Board of Directors and many of the committees currently have openings. If you are interested in serving on a committee, you can complete a Committee Application at https://bit.ly/ GHCommitteeApp.

Annual Meeting Recap
Congratulations to newly elected Grayhawk Community Association Board of Directors representatives Paul Alessio, Derek Moore, Don Morse and Arlene Smith. Each will serve a two-year term. In addition, congratulations to Retreat Village Association Board of Directors representatives Michael Loya, Don Morse and John Williams, who will also serve a two-year term. Thanks to each of the candidates for their willingness to serve the community.
Also included on the ballot for the Board of Directors election this year was a vote regarding House Bill 2298. It was announced at the Annual Meeting on March 19 that enough “yes” votes were obtained to allow the Association to maintain authority to regulate public roadways.
A big thank you to our sponsors for helping to make the 2025 Annual Meeting a success!
Did you know that Grayhawk Elementary School’s (GHES) new butterfly garden has four different species of milkweed and includes host plants for Monarch, Queen, Gulf Fritillary, and Pipevine Swallowtail butterflies? These plants also serve as nectar sources for countless additional species of butterflies, moths, hummingbirds, native bees, and other pollinators. In total, the garden now includes 25 different species of plants! A few may have noticed that some of the plants have been “put in jail”? A bunny had taken a liking to some of our plants, but we are hoping to deter further visits from “Peter Rabbit,” at least until our plants are a little bit better established.
This amazing makeover would not have been possible without plant and knowledge donations from Butterfly Wonderland, the Southwest Monarch Study, and Scottsdale Community College. We also received material donations from Home Depot and Ace Hardware as well as money and time from our PTO and Dad’s Club. Special thanks to GHES’s amazing STEM teacher, Mrs. Lindstrom, for making all of this possible! This multi-phase project turned out so beautifully and will provide many enrichment and learning opportunities for our students.
Thanks also to the many volunteers who spent a Saturday morning digging holes, planting and mulching. We appreciate them and our wonderful community!
Scottsdale Curfew Reminder
During the summer months, Grayhawk patrol typically sees an increase in late night activity throughout the community, especially in the City of Scottsdale Parks. For parents, knowing the city’s curfew laws helps make sure children are at home safe late at night and don’t have to experience an unpleasant contact with their friendly Grayhawk patrol or Scottsdale PD.
In the City of Scottsdale, it is unlawful for minors 15 and under to be outside unsupervised between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Minors ages 16 and 17 may not be outside unsupervised between midnight and 5 a.m. The City of Scottsdale park curfew, which applies to people of all ages, is 10:30 p.m. The curfew law applies seven days a week.
There are a few exceptions to the curfew, including times minors are accompanied by parents or legal guardians; going to or returning from work; or any reasonable, legitimate and specific business or activity, with permission by parent or guardian. According to Scottsdale Code Sec. 19-11, it is also unlawful for a parent, guardian, or person having legal custody of a minor to knowingly permit, or by insufficient control, allow a minor to violate curfew. If you have a minor in your home, please make sure you understand the laws and have everyone home before curfew.

SNAKES
In 2008, the Scottsdale Fire Department asked if anyone on patrol staff would be able to aid in the relocation of snakes within the community. At that time, the Fire Department stated that it cost approximately $500 every time their staff had to leave the station. Responding to snake calls also ties up emergency vehicles and manpower that could delay response to a fire or medical emergency.
That request led to select Garda staff members being trained in snake removal and since 2008, Garda has relocated a total of 1,980 snakes saving the city of Scottsdale an estimated $990,000.
In 2024, a total of 75 snakes were caught and relocated by Garda staff members after responding to calls from residents, saving the City of Scottsdale approximately $37,500. Jack Bitter and Dylan Kinsley combined to capture 52 of the 75 snakes captured.
If you encounter a snake on your property, you can call 480-502-7685 or 480-502-5078 and request an aid in removal. Remember that this is a courtesy service and can only be performed when time permits and staff trained in snake removal are on site. Snakes will only be removed when the resident that called in has been able to monitor the snake and it remains visible (not in bushes, etc.)
Revitalize Your Yard with Low Water-Use Plants
By: Kaipo Spenser, DLC Resources Field Manager
With weather changes over the last few years and extended hot temperatures, now is a good time to start planting new plants in your yard! You'll want to give your young plants as much time as possible to establish and build a strong root system before the summer heat sets in.
Before planting, consider plants that don't need a lot of water to thrive. Installing low water-use plants is a great way to conserve water in your yard without compromising on a beautiful landscape!
When discussing plants that don't need water, you may think of cacti and succulents. But plenty of flowering shrubs also thrive in the desert. Plus, desert-adapted shrubs bring seasonal color with a variety of flowers.
Low Water-Use Plants for a Dynamic Desert Landscape
• Baja Fairy Duster: A medium- to large-sized shrub that produces red, plume-like flowers (the Pink Fairy Duster is another great option!)
• Chuparosa: Also known as Mexican Honeysuckle, this medium-sized shrub produces unique red and orange flowers that appear tubular in shape.
• Bird of Paradise: A great option for areas in full sun, this shrub has distinctive, fiery blooms in red and yellow.
• Tecoma Shrubs: Often growing large and tall, different varieties produce yellow, orange, or orange-red flowers. Hummingbirds love their trumpet-like flowers!
• Bougainvillea: There are several varieties of Bougainvillea, and we often see these shrubs with bright, magenta blooms. Another variety grows blooms that are a softer pink.
• Chihuahuan Sage: This medium to large shrub grows loose, spiky branches and small flowers in light purple (sometimes white).
• Baja Ruellia: This shrub is small to medium in size and grows in a naturally rounded shape with purple flowers.
• Chaparral Sage: The Chaparral Sage is a large, fragrant shrub with purple flowers.
• Hop Bush: Capable of growing as tall as 25 feet, these plants make a fantastic natural hedge for privacy or shade. Hop bushes bloom in vibrant yellow early in spring.
All the shrub species above are on your Community's approved plant list, but be sure to check before planting other kinds. Happy planting!

The Baja Fairy Duster has distinctive blooms that look fuzzy, contributing to the plant’s unique name.
