Manager’s Corner The month of February is often associated with love and kindness, and that theme has made its way into Grayhawk this month. We will be having our Daddy/Daughter Dance on February 17. This dance is a very popular annual event and it is a great chance for all of the men in Grayhawk to bring their special little lady or ladies to this fun-filled dance. This year’s Daddy Daughter Dance and are planning a super fun “Party like BARBIE” theme! Also, February 17 is “Random Acts of Kindness Day”. As Grayhawk residents, I encourage you to consider your own random acts of kindness this month in your community. There are many things you can do for others in your neighborhood or community to show your appreciation and/or kindness. You can offer to keep an eye on a neighbor’s house when they’re away, pull a trash can out for someone in need or watch a neighbor’s pet(s) for them. You can welcome new homeowners to your neighborhood with a “hello” and waive to those you have seen for years. Have you considered a kind email or letter of thanks to the GCA or RVA Board of Directors for all their hard work and for volunteering their time to continue to make Grayhawk an even better community? Speaking of the Board of Directors, this month you will receive information to view the Meet the Candidates video for the Grayhawk Community Association and Retreat Village Association 2024 Board of Directors election. The videos will contain brief question and answer sessions with candidates during which they will share their qualifications, goals for the association, and community interests if elected as a Board member. The Boards of Directors have partnered with Vote HOA Now to provide the 2024 Annual Meeting information and voting electronically. Additional information will be provided throughout the month regarding this year’s Annual Meeting. Make sure that you are signed up for the Grayhawk Buzz weekly email blast by emailing Jennifer Sheets at jsheets@ccmcnet. com. In 2024, we are hoping to have our largest voter turnout ever at Grayhawk. This is your community and we are encouraging you to do your part and become involved in the Board election process. Please take the time to watch the candidate video(s), and vote in this year’s election(s).

CITY OF SCOTTSDALE

2024 Brush Pickup Schedule Brush pickup is designed to provide an easy and convenient way for residents to dispose of items generated from their homes which are too large in size or too large in quantity to dispose of in their refuse container. Please stack items neatly, parallel to the street on your front property line, where your trash collection typically takes place.

NEW! 3 DAY RULE Per the City of Scottsdale, residents may place bulk/brush out for collection no sooner than 3 days prior to the Monday of scheduled collection week.

"Should you bag and tie your recyclables before placing them into your recycle bin?" The answer is NO! You should NOT bag your recyclables prior to placing them into your recycle bin. Why, you may ask? Well, your recyclable material travels through a series of mechanical sorting machines that get gummed up with plastic bags causing them to have to shut down. Personnel then have to climb into the machinery and cut away all the bags. So please place your recyclables loosely into your recycle bin. The ONLY exception to this rule would be to contain shredded paper. It is ok to place your shredded paper in a transparent bag which gets pulled off the line to be bailed separately with paper.

10

The City of Scottsdale provides very clear guidelines regarding the types of materials that can be left for Brush and Bulk Pickup, as well as the size and placement of the items. Please be sure to visit the City of Scottsdale website at https:// www.scottsdaleaz.gov/solid-waste/brush-bulk-collection and read through those guidelines before placing items out for pickup. Also, remember that each homeowner is responsible for the manner in which their material is placed out for collection, whether or not they hire someone else to do the work.

TIME FOR CHANGE

As the community ages, more owners are choosing to make updates and improvements to their homes, which is great! Modifications, no matter how small, help to provide value and improve overall home values. As a reminder, any changes that are visible from the street or a neighboring property must be submitted to and approved by the Architectural Review Committee. These modifications can include (but are not limited to) landscaping, windows, paint, light fixtures and house numbers. The committee typically meets twice a month on the first and third Tuesday. Applications for modifications are due to the office by no later than noon the Friday prior to the meeting to be placed on the agenda. Applications and more information about submittal requirements can be found on grayhawkcommunity.org under Resident Resources/Design Review or by following bit.ly/ARCprocess.

Before you submit an application to the committee, take a moment to review some of the guidelines for common modifications, common medications in one-sheets found on grayhawkcommunity.org under Resident Resources/Design Review or by following bit.ly/ModificationGuidelines. These will hopefully help clarify what the committee might be looking for before you start the process. Staff members are also happy to help you with any questions. Make an appointment to sit down with Cierra Austin to review your project by contacting her at caustin@ccmcnet. com or 480-563-9708. This ensures that she will be available to give you the time you need to have all of your questions answered.

MONTEVINA SHARES THE SPIRIT OF GIVING This past holiday season was the 21st year that the residents of Grayhawk’s Montevina neighborhood collected canned goods and monetary donations for St. Mary’s Food Bank in trade for holiday cheer in the form of over-the-top lights and warm cocoa. This year, Montevina neighbors collected $25,765 and 5,473 pounds of food. Monetary and food donations from December of 2023 combined to feed 133,391 people in need

in the valley. That is 133,391 people who had their 2023 made a little better by the kindness of others. The generosity shown by the Montevina neighbors, who volunteer precious time during one of the busiest months of the year to man the Cocoa Hut, is a wonderful example of the spirit of Grayhawk. Thank you, Montevina residents, for your selflessness. And thank to all that stopped by to donate!

Solicitors in Your Community Solicitors can be a nuisance, and it is not unusual for the Grayhawk Community Association management team to receive phone calls regarding solicitors in the community. Community patrol can always make contact with solicitors, but they cannot always ask them to leave, as the City of Scottsdale does allow solicitors under certain circumstances. The City of Scottsdale classifies two types of solicitors: 1. People who are actually selling something or collecting money for a charitable foundation 2. People who are handing out handbills (advertisements) or leaving them at doors The first type of solicitor or required to have a permit to go door to door from the City of Scottsdale and must display it or at least have it readily available upon request. Those solicitors, traveling from business to business or house to house attempting to take orders for sale of goods or future delivery of serves, are required to pay a $10 per day licensing fee as well as provide a fingerprint and background check. Application must be made 30 days prior to the event or solicitation. They are allowed to work between the hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Residents can still call Scottsdale PD and they will respond since they can take enforcement action if the

subject doesn’t have a permit from the city. But if the solicitor has the proper permitting and is working within the time parameters, and not going to houses that have the signage prohibiting solicitation, than they are able to do so without restriction from the police. The second type of solicitor does not need a permit. The distribution of printed materials including handbills, fliers, and door hangers to a residential property in the City of Scottsdale is regulated under the City of Scottsdale's Revised Code (Chapter 19, Sec. 9). While these types of printed materials are allowed, it is a violation to deliver these types of printed materials to a resident who has announced that they do not wish to receive them. Scottsdale PD cannot trespass individuals from public property, which the non-gated portion of Grayhawk would be. Even the “no soliciting” signs that the GCA has placed throughout the community won’t preclude someone from going into the neighborhood to do so. However, if individual homeowners have the no soliciting signs posted on their house, then that would prohibit the solicitors from going to those individual homes. Here are three easy steps of the Residential Handbills Program a resident can take to legally notify a handbill distributor that no printed material is to be placed on the resident's premises.

ANNOUNCING The citizen must announce that he/ she does not wish to receive handbills. This can be achieved through signage posted in a conspicuous place near the entrance of the residential property. SAMPLE SIGNAGE: NO • Handbills • Advertisements • Unsolicited written materials • Peddlers • Solicitors Scottsdale Revised Code Section 19-9 NOTIFYING If handbill distribution continues after Step 1, the citizen may then notify the Handbills Program Coordinator of the violation and provide copies of the offending handbills. NOTIFICATION OF VIOLATION The Handbills Program Coordinator will then contact the offending advertising, marketing or distribution company(s) in question, to notify them of the violation(s) as well as direct them to respect the citizen’s request by not leaving any further advertising material at that address.
