Treasurer’s Report
Jennifer Sheets reported that communication had recently gone out to the community regarding vandalism. The committee met recently and reviewed edits to an Arizona governance document that was created by resident Victoria Kauzlarich. That should be ready for the Board of Directors to look at in August.
Jeanette Griswold reported that there was $58,405.00 taken in through Community Enhancement in April, with a year-todate total of $201,013.00. The reserve fund is approximately 70% funded.
Architectural Review Committee
Stacey Harvey reported there was extensive graffiti/vandalism done throughout the community on May 18, most of which has been painted over or removed. Scottsdale PD has informed the GCA that two individuals have been identified and/or arrested regarding this incident. Two new park benches have been installed in the Monterey Park neighborhood. Trail signs are still being inventoried and maintenance will replace missing, faded or damaged signs over the next several months.
Paul Alessio reported that the committee had reviewed stone samples submitted by the designer. A motion was made and approved to accept the East Mill stone style as the stone to be installed on the monument signs throughout the community. The GCA Board of Directors previously approved the funding for the stone installation portion of this project at an approximate cost of $298,000.00.
Budget/Finance Committee Jeanette Griswold reported that the committee did not meet.

Flood Map Changes Save Residents Money Hundreds of Scottsdale residents living within the Rawhide Wash floodplain in the Grayhawk master-planned community will benefit from revisions to the city’s flood insurance rate maps. The changes took effect June 14 – the result of a recent restudy of the area along the Rawhide Wash floodplain – from the Deer Valley alignment south to Legacy Boulevard, east of Scottsdale Road. The analysis accounted for infrastructure improvements and improved flood modeling techniques. Based on those changes, the 100-year floodplain became smaller, removing hundreds of property owners from its boundaries. Flood insurance is no longer mandatory for property owners with a federally-backed mortgage on a home located within the boundaries.
Impacted residents can request a flood hazard determination online at https://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/stormwater and provide the information to their mortgage company with their request to cancel flood insurance. Because severe weather and flooding can be unpredictable in the desert, Scottsdale urges all residents to consider carrying flood insurance, even though it will no longer be mandatory for mortgage holders within this area. Questions about these changes can be directed to Ashley Couch, Scottsdale’s floodplain administrator, at 480-312-4317 or acouch@ScottsdaleAZ.gov. There are several online resources available to learn more about Scottsdale’s stormwater program and federal flood insurance. Visit the FEMA Flood Insurance Program at https://www.fema.gov/national-flood-insurance-program FloodSmart at https://www.floodsmart.gov/floodsmart/ or ScottsdaleAZ.gov and search “stormwater”.

City of Scottsdale 2019 Brush Pickup Schedule Brush pickup is designed to provide an easy and convenient way for residents to dispose of items generated from their homes which are too large in size or too large in quantity to dispose of in their refuse container. Please stack items neatly, parallel to the street on your front property line, where your trash collection typically takes place. Please follow these simple guidelines relating to Brush Pickup: • Piles should not exceed 10’ long by 6’ wide by 4’ tall. • Solid waste crews will only spend 20 minutes per residence so if you exceed these limits, materials left behind will be picked up on the following month’s brush pickup collection date and must be removed from the curb until the next collection. • Crews are responsible for large debris only, and small debris left behind is the responsibility of the resident to clean up. • Do not place construction waste, loose grass, remodeling materials, rocks, loose leaves or twigs, dirt, loose refuse or uncovered/unboxed cactus out for collection. City crews cannot collect these items. • Do not mix trash, rocks, dirt, wire, cactus, grass, bricks, cement, or other materials in with your brush. Crews will be unable to collect your brush until these items are removed. • Please separate your brush and bulk pickup into two piles – one for green waste and one for everything else. The piles will be picked up by separate trucks during your designated brush and bulk pickup week. The green waste – yard clippings, branches and trimmings – will be composted to help grow new plants, while the rest will be taken to the landfill for disposal. • Tree limbs and other objects must be less than 12 inches in diameter. • Keep glass separate from other items in sturdy boxes measuring no more than 2’x2’x2’. Please clearly mark these items. • Do not put out paint, paint thinners, strippers, pesticides, batteries, motor oils, chlorine, pool acid, or other prohibited items. Each homeowner is responsible for proper disposal of these items. Any size tires will not be collected. • Do not park within 10 feet of bulk piles.
JULY 22 AUGUST 19 SEPTEMBER 23 OCTOBER 21
Remember that each homeowner is responsible for the manner in which their material is placed out for collection, whether or not they hire someone else to do the work.
NOVEMBER 18
Your items will be collected sometime during the week collection is scheduled, beginning on the Monday shown in the schedule below. Please have your items placed by 5:00 a.m. the Monday of the week scheduled for pickup, however, do not have your items out more than five days prior to that. Thank you for your cooperation.
DECEMBER 23
Also, remember that regular trash containers are picked up on Mondays and recycling containers are picked up on Thursdays. Please have your cans out no earlier than dusk the day prior to pickup and no later than dusk the day of pickup. For more information on trash, recycle or brush pickup, visit www.ScottsdaleAZ.gov/recycle.

Curfew Keeps Our Kids Safe During the summer months, we typically see an increase in late night activity involving people under the age of 18. Knowing the city’s curfew laws helps make sure children are at home safe late at night and don’t have to experience an unpleasant contact with their friendly Grayhawk patrol or Scottsdale PD. In the City of Scottsdale, it is unlawful for minors under 16 to be outside unsupervised between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. the next morning. Minors ages 16 to 18 may not be outside unsupervised between midnight and 5 a.m. the next morning. The City of Scottsdale park curfew, which applies to people of all ages, is 10:30 p.m. There are a few exceptions to the curfew, including times minors are accompanied by parents or legal guardians; going to or returning from work; or any reasonable, legitimate and specific business or activity, with permission by parent or guardian. According to Scottsdale Code Sec. 19-11, it is also unlawful for a parent, guardian, or person having legal custody of a minor to knowingly permit, or by insufficient control, allow a minor to violate curfew. If you have a minor in your home, please make sure you understand the laws and have your children home before curfew.

Our Desert, Our Home The Spring that Was By Victoria Kauzlarich, Volare Mother Nature put on a spectacular show this spring. Remember? Now that we’re in the dog days of summer, it’s easy to let the memory of spring fade and instead focus on the hot and now. Perhaps we should take a little more time to enjoy - or maybe re-enjoy - what nature had to offer this year: a long, mild, drop-dead-gorgeous season full of non-stop color and maybe a sneeze or two. Let’s take one more look at the season just passed - this time through my camera’s lens.
Fleet of Flying Saucers I’m always caught off guard when these bloom and this year they were especially prolific. This cactus has many common names but “Flying Saucer” is among my favorites. The flowers look like they’re about to take off from their stems. Or, maybe they just landed.
Giant Flowers, Giant Cactus Eight-inch-wide flowers + the darkness of night = beacons for pollinators. These sweet smelling beauties attract bats and moths after dark, along with the stray javelina. Their sweet smelling blooms open in late afternoon, get pollinated at night and by noon the next day? They’re history. Flowers this size require a plant equal to the task. Topping out at about 10’ across, these cacti need room to roam and, of course, live up to their name.
‘Del Rue’ Flying Saucer (Trichocereus huascha hybrid var. del rue)
Lovely Chihuahuan A sage is a sage is a sage, right? Uh-huh. IMHO, the best Leucophyllum (aka sage) is the Chihuahuan Sage. Why? Because it is so different from the rest. Most sages have a boring, dense growth habit - even before they’re sheered to look like meatballs. Not the Chihuahuan. These grow wider than they do tall and their sprawling, open habit almost invite a sigh.
Argentine Giant (Echinopsis candicans)

There’s Nothing Like ‘Em Santa Rita Prickly Pears, that is. These are seasonal chameleons. Their ever-changing pad colors and their contrasting flowers make them among the most prized of prickly pears. Their new growth is deep bronze with soft bright green spines. Then, the pads become tinged with purple before settling into a soft gray/blue. There was so much new ‘Rita growth this spring that each of these plants was its own riot of color. And those flowers: buttercream yellow atop bi-color pads. Could we ask for anything more? Well, yeah, we could. But, why? Santa Rita Prickly Pear (Opuntia violacea var. santa-rita)
Glorious But You Have to Be Quick When not in bloom, Hedgehog cacti go unseen, slipping into the background as part of the larger landscape. They’re small - only about 8’10” high but, once their flowers open, you can not look away. For one day only, these otherwise nondescript cacti send up gorgeous blooms that beg pollinators to come inside and cameras to take a closer look. Santa Rita Prickly Pear – New Growth
Last but not Least: An Agave Surprise Humans rarely see this. It’s the top of an Agave flower. Agaves send their flowers skyward on (normally) long, straight stalks. This rebel had other ideas. Starting skyward, it bent sideways and then ambled back to earth, as if to go public with its secret.
Scarlet Hedgehog (Echinocereus coccineus)
Until Next Month Well, that was fun wasn’t it? This spring; our spring: a season worth remembering one more time. Come back next month when we’ll look at an ancient plant rivalry - a battle of titans, really. What? There’s competition in the desert plant world? You bet. Mezcal Pardo (Agave sobria)

Monument Sign Project Update The Grayhawk Architectural Review Committee has been working hard for some time to make some updates to the community monument signs. By now, you have likely seen the smooth coat, new dark brown color and white lettering being applied to monument signs throughout the community. In addition to the above mentioned updates, the Architectural Review Committee worked with a designer to select a new stone package for the monuments. The stone package they selected was approved by the GCA Board of Directors at the June board meeting, and work was quickly started on the monuments in preparation for adding the new stone. The vendor will begin installation of the new stone at the large community monuments found at the corners of Pima Road and

Thompson Peak Parkway; Hayden Road and Deer Valley Road; and Scottsdale Road and Thompson Peak Parkway in early July. They will then move into the neighborhoods and start completing the smaller monuments. Monument signs were originally created by builders and varied by neighborhood. It was the Architectural Review Committee’s wish to tie all of the signs together to create one uniform look for Grayhawk. Monuments signs that do not currently have stone will have stone added. This will create consistency throughout the community, which is also being achieved by using the same lettering on all of the signs.

Landscaping Saguaro Cactus: How to transplant and maintain By John Eubank, DLC Resources, Inc., Field Manager Saguaro Cacti are a staple of the High Sonoran Desert. At Grayhawk, they are an impressive addition to your landscape, helping to create an authentic desert look throughout your common areas and homes. In all, there are about 935 Saguaros that live in your Community. If you’re looking to add a Saguaro or two to your own landscape, there are a few things to keep in mind. Traditional Saguaros range significantly in height, found anywhere from 2 to 40 feet tall, with either a single stem or multiple arms, largely depending on their age. These desert icons must be purchased from nurseries that have properly obtained the plants; it is not permitted to remove the cacti from their natural homes independently. After purchase, the size of the cactus will largely dictate what must be done to plant it at your home. Saguaros under 10 feet are typically sold bare root– with no pot or soil– and ready for planting. These relatively smaller individuals can usually be planted by a homeowner, while any Saguaro larger than approximately 10 feet will need to be handled by a professional. Please contact a landscape professional to advise on specific needs prior to installation. Because Saguaros can grow to be approximately 40 feet tall and weigh several tons, the placement of your Saguaro must be carefully thought out. Imaginably, a plant of this size has the ability to cause significant damage if it were to fall onto any structure or vehicle. Therefore, the installation location should be well away from your home, backyard walls, parking areas and any other valuable property. Water runoff and access must also factor in when deciding placement. Saguaros are native to our desert landscape and therefore do not require much water; in fact, excessive water will likely drown and kill these landscape treasures. With that in mind, they

should not be planted in locations where water may run or collect; this includes areas next to or downhill from pools and sections neighboring other plants that do require frequent watering. When planting, several precautions and conditions must be followed to best allow the transplant of the cactus to be successful. First, the base of the stem should be at soil level, keeping the roots from being buried too deep in the ground. Next, the nursery will mark what direction the Saguaro was growing in; in your yard, it should be oriented the same way. Changing the side of the cactus that receives the majority of the sunlight may cause severe damage. Once in the ground, only give a minimal amount of water to fill the pockets of air in the soil below. Following the initial watering, you should only give more in the case of a severe drought. Because Saguaros are hearty desert plants native to our area, they need little ongoing care once planted in your landscape. They thrive naturally in this environment and don’t require pruning or irrigation that the other plants in your landscape need. Though little maintenance is required, always keep an eye out for signs of damage, rot, or anything else out of the ordinary. Healthy Saguaros are bright green and plump. Signs of an unhealthy Saguaro include losing spines, a pale green color or shriveling. One thing to watch out for a disease called Bacterial Necrosis. While it’s not widespread, Bacterial Necrosis does occur occasionally – both in the natural Saguaro population and in Saguaros that are planted in landscapes. There have been a handful of Saguaros that have suffered from Bacterial Necrosis at Grayhawk over the last couple of years, and DLC Crews routinely watch out for signs of necrosis in your Community’s Saguaros.
Saguaros develop brown spots and begin losing needles as they are dying.
As the name implies, the disease is caused by bacteria that gets into the Saguaro’s tissues through wounds or natural openings and causes it to rot. It’s not known how the bacteria get into the cactus, though it’s thought to be spread by birds or mites.
Bacterial Necrosis in Saguaro Cacti looks like dark purple-ish or black spots on the cactus’ skin. A foul-smelling liquid can also leak out of the spot.
Once a Saguaro is infected, the bacteria begin rotting the plant’s tissue internally. Soft, dark spots appear on the outside of the cactus and grow larger and turn purplishblack. These spots can split open and a dark, rancid-smelling liquid seeps out. After rotting has begun, removal may be required in order to avoid the potential dangers of a falling cactus.
The beautiful Saguaro is already at home in our desert environment, making it an excellent and maintenance-free addition to any landscape. With a little care and attention during the transition, it may flourish for years to come. Fallen Saguaros can cause significant damage.

Still Sweet and Salty Easy Antipasto Skewers By Lori Bosch and daughter, Stephanie, Cachet at Grayhawk One of my best girlfriends recently asked if I could make an Italian dish for a bridal shower she was hosting for one of our good friend’s daughter. The bride-to-be is half Italian and will be honeymooning in Italy, thus the Italian food theme. I wanted something that would be easy to eat, appeal to everyone, look pretty when plated, and of course taste delicious. I decided on these antipasto skewers, some with meat and some vegetarian so that everyone could enjoy them. I bought most of the ingredients at Whole Foods and Fry’s. I found the cute, bamboo, knotted skewers on Amazon for about $7 (100 count). The only ingredient that required cooking was the cheese tortellini, which I prepared according to the directions on the package, rinsed in cold water and then marinated in Italian salad dressing for an hour. I also marinated the mini mozzarella balls in Italian dressing. The rest is pretty self explanatory! Just look at the photo and copy, or add your own creative twist to this easy appetizer...anything goes! Assembling the skewers is a little messy but fun, and would be even more fun to do with a friend or family member. Summer is a great time to entertain, and this chilled appetizer will fit perfectly into any party spread. You can make the skewers a few hours before your party so they are ready to pull out of the fridge when your guests arrive. Buon Appetito! And always, always, always when you’re asked to bring something to a shower or a party, make the extra effort to make a pretty presentation…your friends will notice and ask for the recipe. We welcome your feedback, suggestions and recipe requests! Please feel free to email us at boschl@me.com.

• basil leaves, cut into thin strips
1. Prepare tortellini according to package instructions, then rinse in cold water and drain. 2. Marinate tortellini and mozzarella balls each in ½ cup Italian dressing for at least one hour. Drain and discard marinade. 3. For each skewer, thread any combination of stuffed olives, tortellini, tomatoes, a folded slice of salami, or prosciutto, and chunks of cheeses. Make some vegetarian & meaty skewers. 4. Drizzle the veggie skewers with balsamic glaze, and sprinkle with strips of basil.
Sip and Tell By Sue Lukenbill, Encore Resident Our Arizona summer is officially here. Hopefully we’ll see some monsoons mixed in with celebrations of freedom, hot dogs, swimming and those “dog days” which we hope will end but seem to last forever. I know that many of us can’t wait to “get out of Dodge”, and I imagine that some of you are already looking for cooler climates. As you read this article, we will be in Show Low celebrating the 4th of July among the pine trees, blue skies and cooler temperatures. We will then fly to Reno to spend a glorious week in Lake Tahoe with family. It’s likely we’ll head back to Show Low to hide out for the rest of our summer upon our return. While I’m sure many of you have similar plans to escape, there will certainly be days that some of you are here, hungry and doing anything to avoid using your oven. I think I have found a place you may not have tried that will offer healthy eats in the heat of summer. This month I decided to step outside my carnivore box and lunch at Fresh Mint, a fantastic little vegetarian place that has been hiding in plain sight for 12 years. Even if you're not a vegetarian, you'll appreciate the fresh, flavorful cuisine at this Vietnamese and PanAsian cafe. They guarantee freshness by preparing every dish when ordered. The service was fantastic and the food was great. They have a Gluten Free Menu, Entrees, Chef Specials, Noodles, Salads, Soups, Sides, Beverages, Smoothies, and Desserts. There are also ten items on the "Lunch on the Run" menu, and I’m pretty sure you really can't go wrong with any of them. This lunch menu is $9 and is served on Monday - Friday only. The menu includes a salad and white or brown rice. You can add soy beef, soy chicken, tofu or steamed vegetables to any plate for $3. I did some research on the restaurant before going, but unfortunately did not make note of the favorite, popular items which are Pad Thai, Kung Pao Soy Chicken, Rainbow Wonder, Fried Imperial Rolls, and Golden Soy Chicken Delight. Regulars also speak highly of the Spicy Lemongrass Tofu, featuring sautéed tofu with lemongrass, green and white onions, all simmered in a savory curry coconut sauce and the Kung Pao Soy Chicken which offers a spicy take on the Chinese classic that is exciting and filling. Had I listened to Jennifer, Grayhawk’s Director of
Communications and editor of the Grayhawk Flight, I would have ordered the Pad Thai. I went a different route, but can’t say that I regret it. I was surprised by how much I didn’t miss the meat! We ordered the Fresh Summer Rolls for an appetizer, which were fresh thin sliced carrots, red and white cabbage, fresh mint, tofu, and vermicelli, rolled in rice paper and served with house peanut sauce. They were refreshing and a good, light choice prior to ordering our lunch. For lunch I ordered the Mongolian Soy Beef with julienne carrots, celery, white and green onions and soy beef in classic spicy Mongolian garlic sauce with brown rice and the salad that came with it. Jennifer ordered the Veggie Kabob with seasoned eggplant, mushroom, bell pepper, tofu, onion and zucchini covered in homemade BBQ peanut sauce. She had the white rice and salad. We both enjoyed our lunches, which were vey filling. While a vegetarian diet might not be everyone’s “thing”, I do think anyone would love what Fresh Mint has to offer. If you are ever in the area of Scottsdale and Thunderbird Roads, I recommend that you stop by and check them out. I think you’ll enjoy the modern healthy cuisine that specializes in Vegetarian, Vegan, and kosher dining Fresh Mint. Happy 4th of July and be safe this summer!
