Board Briefs Grayhawk Master Association Board of Directors Meeting – November 5, 2018 Development Committee David Van Omen reported that the committee did not meet. Jeanette Griswold reported on the recent City of Scottsdale meeting regarding a potential dog park at the Thompson Peak Park. She stated that this was a meeting designed to get feedback from residents on what they would like to see if funding became available and a dog park was a possibility in the future.

Operational Review Committee Richard Zielinski reported that there had been some graffiti issues recently. The committee is looking at making some changes to the current Realtor Registration form. The committee is asking to have an article run in the Grayhawk Flight regarding crime in Grayhawk and who to call. The committee did discuss a request to heat the showers at the pool areas in the Retreat Village and determined that the cost to do so was too high. The committee also discussed the impending guardhouse remodel project and determined that a professional consultant should be hired to manage the project moving forward.

Landscape Committee Stacey Harvey reported that the committee did not meet. Arlene Smith reported that DLC Resources had to overseed many areas twice this year due to heavy rain in October. Winter flowers at the monuments and at the Retreat Village pool areas have been planted. The butterfly garden in Montevina looks great.

Community Enhancement Committee Stacey Harvey reported that the committee did not meet. A motion was made and approved to accept a proposal from DLC Resources to repair 35 locations that suffered extensive erosion damage during the 2018 monsoon season at a cost of $36,193.00. This will be paid from the Community Enhancement Fund.

Event Planning Committee Sarah Van Duyne reported that the Pumpkin Patch had been very successful. There were some new elements to the event this year, including a mechanical pumpkin and wax hands. Holiday events are right around the corner, including the Santa Party, Masquerade Merriment Christmas Party, Chanukah Party and Holiday Hayrides.

Communications Committee Jennifer Sheets reported that a survey went out to online registrants following the Pumpkin Patch. We will start doing more short surveys following events now that more people are registering online.

The committee did recently meet and welcomed a new member, Michael Loya. The committee discussed the new website and started making plans for the Annual Meeting in March.

Architectural Review Committee Paul Alessio reported there were five submittals at the October 2 meeting. The committee continues to work on the monument sign project and is recommending Board approval of a project manager for this project. A motion was made and approved to pay Roget Tornow with Tornow Associates $2,500 to manage the monument renovation project. He will represent the GCA in meetings with the City of Scottsdale to ascertain approval of this project and will work with Graphic Design Inc. (GDI) to manage the project moving forward.

Budget/Finance Committee Jeanette Griswold reported that at the October Board meeting, the Board of Directors approved increasing the GCA assessment rate by $2.00 per month as well as funding $90,024 of the GCA reserve contribution in 2019 through the GCA community enhancement fund. A motion was made and approved for the 2019 GCA and Pinnacle neighborhood operating budgets as submitted.

Executive Committee Linda Shaw reported that the strategic goals being completed or in progress include the all-inclusive sporting/fitness event (Health and Wellness Jamboree), Board and staff member representation at sub-association Annual Meetings, and the monument sign renovation project.

Treasurer’s Report Jeanette Griswold reported that expenses were over budget due primarily to legal and collection fees which are not budgeted items, and storm damage clean up expenses from this year’s monsoon storms. The GCA is still ahead of budget by approximately $16,000. The community enhancement fund took in $42,833 in September with a year-to-date total of $557,710.

Management Report Michael Fee reported that Cierra Austin has been hired as the new Administrative Coordinator. The Board Holiday Party is schedule for December 17.

Meet Cierra Grayhawk is excited to welcome Cierra Austin to the community. In her new role as the Administrative Coordinator, Cierra will be the first point of contact for most residents. She’ll be the voice you hear when you call and the face you see when you stop in the office, and we’re lucky to have her! Born and raised in Phoenix, Cierra moved back to the Valley a little more than a year ago after living in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado for about nine years. During her time in Colorado, Cierra served as a preschool teacher and also attended the Colorado Mountain College for elementary education. It was there that she first worked in an administrative position, serving as Administrative Assistant to the President of the college. Upon moving back to Valley, Cierra joined the CCMC team as an Administrative Coordinator for the Spectrum Community Association in Gilbert, which allowed her to expand her administrative skills in a masterplanned community of more than 1,900 residences. These skills, and her personable approach will allow her to be a tremendous asset to the Grayhawk team and community. In her spare time Cierra enjoys photography, spending time with family and friends and playing volleyball. She is also an avid fan of Alabama’s college football team, the Crimson Tide. If you call or stop by the office, make sure to make Cierra feel welcome!

Holiday Gate Access in the Retreat If you will be hosting a holiday party this year, please remember to drop off a complete guest list to the guardhouse if you are not adding those guests to your ABDI account. The guards will call on every guest that they have not been notified of prior to the party. You can also note on your ABDI account or let the guardhouse know that any guest(s) who arrive at the guardhouse are allowed access for your holiday or any other type of party without receiving a phone call (we refer to that as an “All In”). This helps if you have late additions to your guest list or forgot to add someone to the guest list. If you are busy having fun and don’t hear your phone ring, your guests may be denied admittance, and that is no way to spread holiday cheer! If you’re not sure how to add or delete guests to your ABDI account, we can help! You can call the office at 480-563-9708 and request your username and password. Alternately, you can visit www.grayhawkcommunity.org and go to the Resident Services tab, then ABDI username and password request. Once you submit the request, you should receive an email back from a GCA staff member within 24 hours with your username and password. Once you have that information, you can log on to www.gateaccess.net, select “GHAWK” in the dropdown and then enter your username and password. Once logged in, you’ll be able to add and delete both temporary and permanent guests from your list, update your personal information and more. This is a great time to familiarize yourself with the system and update your guest list. We find many accounts with multiple pool cleaners, landscapers, etc. and it helps the gate find your guests much faster if you maintain an accurate list. Please remember that the guards at the gate are typically busy processing guests through. If you call the gate with a request and they do not answer, leave a message on the machine. They hear those messages in real time and will address your request or concern as soon as they can. Happy Holidays!

Holiday Lights Montevina Shares the Spirit of Giving This holiday season marks the 16th year that the residents of Grayhawk’s Montevina neighborhood have been spreading holiday cheer with their over-the-top lights, music and goodwill. Hundreds of cars pass through each week every December to enjoy the spectacle on Rose Garden Lane, as life-sized snowmen, manger scenes and reindeer delight children young and old. Santa’s Cocoa Hut, which sits near the entrance, is definitely the highlight. Visitors are handed hot cocoa and cookies by Montevina resident volunteers in exchange for non-perishable food items or cash donations for St. Mary’s Food Bank. The neighborhood has raised thousands and pounds of food and a ton of money over the years, helping to feed our Valley neighbors who are living with hunger. So this December, make sure to stop shopping, baking and wrapping long enough to drive (or walk) over to Montevina and bask in the holiday glow. The Cocoa Hut will be open from December 1-December 25 seven days a week from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Are You a Sleep Walking Zombie? By Coach Paige at Premier Fitness Systems The alarm is buzzing and I can’t stop hitting snooze. Once, twice, three times and finally I pull myself out of bed. Splash water on my face and brush my teeth and I think to myself “if only I could have gone to bed sooner… I wonder if I will have time for a nap today in between clients…” Does this scenario sound familiar? Right now is the time of year when it’s chilly outside and all we want to do is stay warm and cozy under the blankets. But is that a good thing? Is your body giving you signals that you are ignoring? Well, that depends. If you are regularly cutting out on bedtime due to other things such as working late, Facebook, YouTube, video games or even super early exercise classes, then you should keep reading. It’s time to end this I’ll sleep when I am dead mindset! Sleep deprivation and insomnia is more common than you think. Many people are struggling with it but are not doing much about it. One problem is that many view sleep issues as irrelevant to their health. In fact, “Half of Americans (48%) say they don’t get enough sleep, but less than half of them take any one specific action to help them get better sleep.” Moreover, adults 16

|  Flight

35 to 54 years old feel more sleep deprived (52%) than other adults. Let’s review just a few things that happen physiologically when you are sleep deprived. Sleep deprivation leads to slower reaction times which means driving your car becomes possibly more dangerous than being drunk. Your delayed response to a traffic accident could put you in the hospital. How can you workout or exercise your body if you are injured, not to mention time and money loss due to missing work? Your memory also fades with sleep loss. That can mean forgetting to pack/ prep your food for work. Imagine being in the grocery store without your list and forgetting to grab that bag of apples you needed for snacks. None of which is going to help you get to your goal of fat loss. Some studies have even shown that lack of sleep can lead to an increase in insulin resistance and a decrease in glucose tolerance, which is why some experts believe that it alters the supply of energy substrate to the muscle. That means all that time and energy you are putting in to getting a P.R. (personal record) on your next round of deadlifts is not going to happen. You can’t get strong if your cells

aren’t getting adequate food. Professional athletes even know how much sleep can affect their game. A study at Stanford University monitored players on their varsity basketball team. Researchers asked the players to increase their sleep time to roughly 10 hours a night, compared with their normal night’s sleep of 6–9 hours. When they slept more, the players had faster sprint times. Their shooting accuracy also improved, with free-throw percentage increasing by 9% and three-point field-goal percentage increasing by 9.2%. Lastly, sleep deprivation has the same effect on your immune system as physical stress or illness, which may help explain why lack of sleep is tied to an increased risk of numerous chronic diseases. Do you get sick often? Do you easily catch head colds or viruses? The first thing to do would be to sleep and let your body go through its natural repair cycle. Hopefully now you see the importance of getting enough sleep. A good night of rest is especially important during the holidays when we already have other stressors. Sleep tight!

Safety Enjoy a Safe Holiday Season, and Beyond By Trident Security Services As the holidays approach, Trident Security would like to offer some helpful hints to keep our community as safe and secure as possible during this festive season. Whether you may be leaving the community to spend time with family and friends or hosting your own “winter” wonderland, there are some key proactive security measures we would like to suggest in order to prevent a Grinch from ruining your holiday season.

Harden the Target Make your home more difficult to enter. Remember, the criminal will simply bypass your home if it requires too much effort, skill and time than they possess. Most burglars enter via the front, back or garage doors. Believe it or not, a common mistake a homeowner usually makes is leaving the garage door open and unattended. Not only does this dramatically weaken your home’s barrier, it also creates a contained space for a burglar to work on your vehicle and any personal belongings found in your garage. Burglars know to look inside your car for keys and other valuables so keep it locked, even when parked inside your garage. Please don’t keep an extra key outside “under a rock”; even noncriminals know to look there.

“You only see them when you need them.”

Secure sliding glass doors These points of entry are secured by latches not locks. They are vulnerable to being forced open from the outside because of these inherently defective latch mechanisms. This can easily be prevented by inserting a wooden dowel or stick into the track thus preventing or limiting movement. Other blocking devices available are metal fold-down blocking devices called "charley bars", as well as various track-blockers that can be screwed down into the door’s track.

Be mindful Windows are left unlocked and open at a much higher rate than doors. Ground floor windows are more susceptible to breakins for obvious reasons. Upper floor windows become attractive if they can be accessed from a stairway, tree, fence, or by climbing on balconies. Windows also have latches, not locks, and therefore should have secondary blocking devices to prevent sliding them open from the outside. In sleeping rooms, these window blocking devices should be capable of being removed easily from the inside to comply with fire codes. As a deterrent, place highly visible decals on the glass door near the latch mechanism that indicates that an alarm system, a dog or block watch/operation identification system is in place.

Keep the lights on Interior lighting is necessary to show signs of life and activity inside a residence at night. Night after night, a quiet and dark home sends the message to burglars that you are away on a trip. Inexpensive light timers can be utilized to randomly portray activities inside a vacant house. The same light timers can be used to turn on radios or television sets to further enhance the illusion of occupancy. The most effective prevention attempt for crimes to your home may be the most intangible method of all—being a good neighbor. Get to know your neighbors on each side of your home and all around you, for that matter. Invite them into your home, communicate intent to watch their home while they’re away. Ultimately, attempt to establish a sincere trust. Truly good neighbors will watch out for your home as if it were their own. They can report suspicious activity to both you and the police while you are away. Good neighbors can pick up your mail and

newspapers, feed pets, and inspect the outside or inside of your home periodically to see that all is well. They can even occasionally park in your driveway to give the appearance of occupancy while you are on vacation. Ideally, it should be a goal for all of us to create a positive relationship with our neighbors so that in the big picture this request will only be a small favor to ask. We hope these tips can assist you in your many preparations for the upcoming holidays. We look forward to being in partnership with the Grayhawk community and keeping your assets safe. If you see any persons or vehicles in the neighborhood that you are not familiar with, please call the community patrol and we will respond to verify whether the person or vehicle belongs in the area. Still Sweet and Salty Vegan Thai Bowl with Spicy Peanut Sauce By Lori Bosch and daughter, Stephanie, Cachet at Grayhawk I love comfort food on chilly days, but comfort food doesn’t have to be loaded with meat, cholesterol and calories. This bowl of veggies with brown rice is filling and comforting and only about 500 calories. I have noticed that if I eat vegan for a few consecutive days that I usually lose a couple of pounds. Eating vegan just means avoiding any animal-based products, including eggs and dairy. In addition to weight loss, there are many other health benefits a vegan diet provides including lowering the risk of heart disease and high blood pressure as well as protection against type 2 diabetes and certain cancers such as prostate, breast, and colon. I started this plant-based dish by first marinating the veggies to add a little zing, then roasting them in the oven to sweeten/caramelize them. I wanted to add a little extra flavoring and spice to the veggie bowl before serving so I drizzled a homemade spicy peanut sauce over it. But you can use whatever sauce you like…teriyaki sauce, tahini sauce (made from sesame seeds), or hummus would also taste great! You can select any of your favorite vegetables for this recipe and you can also substitute quinoa or other grains for brown rice. I hope you enjoy this yummy, nutritious bowl and that you will try going vegan for a few days to see how you feel. You don’t have to sacrifice on quantity or taste…you can eat as many vegetables as you want since they are low in calorie and spice them up however you like. And always, always, always find new and delicious ways to eat your vegetables…they’re good for you! We welcome your feedback, suggestions and recipe requests! Please feel free to email us at boschl@me.com.

Vegan Thai Bowl with Spicy Peanut Sauce Prep time: 20 minutes; Roast time: 20 minutes • Servings: 2-3 Ingredients: Brown Rice: (make according to directions on package) • 1 cup brown rice • 2 cups water • Pinch of salt Veggie Marinade: • 3 tablespoons sesame oil • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice • 2 tablespoons Tamari or soy sauce • 2 cloves garlic Vegetables: • 2 sweet potatoes (peeled and cut in bite-sized pieces) • 3 large carrots (peeled and sliced) • 1 red onion (peeled and sliced) • 1 yellow pepper, sliced • 12 brussel sprouts, trimmed and cut in half • 1 head broccoli, stem removed • 20 peapods

Spicy Peanut Sauce: • 1/4 cup peanut butter • 1/4 cup canned coconut milk • 2 tablespoons Tamari or soy sauce • 2 tablespoons lime juice • 1 clove garlic, pressed • 1-2 tablespoons sriracha (depending on how much spice you like) • 2 teaspoons fresh grated ginger • 1 teaspoon honey • 1 teaspoon garlic salt Garnish: • Chopped peanuts • Green onions, sliced • A few sprigs of cilantro

1. Make brown rice according to instructions on package. 2. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. 3. Wash and cut all vegetables. 4. Pour marinade over vegetables and toss. (I like to marinate and roast the vegetables separately for a more appealing presentation.) 5. Spray oil on a large baking sheet with edges, and place veggies in separate areas on sheet. 6. Roast vegetables uncovered for 20-22 minutes. 7. Make the peanut sauce by whisking all ingredients in a small bowl until creamy. 8. Assemble the bowls with rice and vegetables however you like. 9. Drizzle peanut sauce over the bowl. 10. Garnish with green onions, chopped peanuts and cilantro.

Sip and Tell By Sue Lukenbill, Encore As we close the door to 2018, I can’t help but think of all the great restaurants I have been able to enjoy with Grayhawk’s Director of Communications Jennifer Sheets. It’s hard to believe I have been writing this column for almost 13 years! I especially love bumping into homeowners while I am out and about who share their personal experiences with area restaurants and having some of them ask me to review one of their favorite restaurants. I want to thank all of you that enjoy reading my article every month, and those who suggest new spots for us to check out. This is the time of the year when many of us are thinking about how to get out of the house and enjoy time with visiting family and friends. I think the most recent restaurant we tested out is perfect. It called Parma Italian Roots, and it’s right here in Grayhawk in the Grayhawk Plaza at Scottsdale Road and Grayhawk Drive. Parma's food has been billed as a “West Coast-style” Italian restaurant. Critics are saying that this new Scottsdale restaurant could change Italian food in Metro Phoenix. I can’t say whether that’s true or not, but what I can say is that Parma is offering some great Italian fare that’s walking distance for many residents and a short drive for everyone else. That’s a win in my book! The restaurant is overseen by Chris Gentile, who is just in his late 20s. He comes to Scottsdale from San Diego, where he has been running Double Standard Kitchenette and making his own charcuterie meats like capicola, coppa, pancetta, guanciale, and, next year, prosciutto.

It is interesting to note that the Italian city of Parma is widely known as the best prosciutto town in the world. Gentile seems to admire the craftsmanship of the food of Parma, and of its greater region. He named his restaurant for the town because it reflects the intensity of the approach he takes to food. Parma doesn’t serve your typical Italian-American food. And it isn't Italian-Italian food, either. When Jennifer and I visited, we were lucky to have an extremely personable server. She suggested that we order the lunch with a choice of two menu items to include either a half sandwich, half salad, half pasta or a cup of soup. It was a great option because it let us sample a couple items on the menu. Besides, I can’t order a pizza for lunch at every Italian restaurant we visit! I ordered the half Hot Veal Meatball sandwich with provolone, parmesan and Pomodoro sauce. I chose the Classic Caesar for my salad. Jenn insisted one of us try the house made pasta, so she ordered the Bucatini with organic Bianco di Napoli tomato sauce and Fior di Latte (Mozzarella) along with the Classic Caesar. Neither of us was disappointed. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch, so much so that for the first time in quite a while we took nothing home. The bread on my sandwich was amazing! The reviews have been great. The bar is great and I’d definitely recommend you stop by for a happy hour. If you’re looking for an appetizer, the Crispy Brussel Sprouts come highly recommended! Patrons have remarked that it is authentic Italian food with Gentile’s own spin on it, and I’d definitely agree. Happy Chanukah and Merry Christmas to all!!! Parma Italian Roots 20831 N. Our Desert, Our Home Denizens of the Desert: Actual Yuccas and Yucca-Likes By Victoria Kauzlarich, Volare With this ‘Denizens’ series drawing to a close, I hope you’ve found some surprises among the plants that we commonly find in the desert. We’re going to start our last installment on Yuccas with yet another: some of the most popular Yuccas aren’t Yuccas at all. Red Yuccas (and their Yellow cousins) along with Brake Light Yuccas are all Hesperaloes.

Hesperaloes’ colorful flowers, their shrub-like appearance and their leaf shape are quite different from actual Yuccas. Everyone calls them Yuccas but they’re really Yucca-like plants. There are approximately 50 species of actual Yucca. “Actuals” are distinctive for several reasons. First, they are edgy, architectural plants. Many of them reach tree-size, all have white blooms and are slow growers. While their leaves can be large and cover a lot of surface area, Yucca leaves have a coating to protect them from too much transpiration. Evergreen and often dagger-shaped, these leaves are fibrous. When you cut into them, you can see “strings”. These strings” make a Yucca’s leaves rigid and, with a terminal spine on each leaf tip, they can be a formidable opponent to anyone with a pruning tool. Both Hesperaloes and Yuccas are great desert plants. They thrive in hot and dry environments. They don’t require much attention except for the occasional removal of dead leaves. With the larger plants, it is useful to let the dead leaves remain on the plant. They form a “petticoat” against their trunks which prevents sunburn.

I have long been fascinated by Joshua Trees which are, you guessed it, Yuccas. There is some debate about how the Joshua Tree (Yucca brevifolia) got its common name. My favorite theory is that early Mormon settlers claimed the early naming rights to these trees. As folklore has it, when these settlers first saw them, they were reminded of the bushy-bearded-biblical-Joshua reaching to the sky. You can see a forest of these trees along Highway 93 if you take a road trip from here to Las Vegas. You literally can’t miss them because, well, the Joshua trees are everywhere AND this section of 93 has a road sign that reads “Joshua Tree Parkway of Arizona.” If you happen to make this trip in May, you’ll be treated to thousands of Joshuas in bloom. Joshua Trees are native to the Mojave Desert and a continuing decline in winter rainfall has taken its toll on these iconic plants. The trees aren’t as numerous as they once were and many of them look less than healthy. Their continued survival is an open question. You don’t see many Joshua Trees in residential landscapes for a couple of reasons. While they get to be the size of many other desert trees, they don’t provide much in the way of shade. They also seem to be hospitable to roof rats which makes them a poor choice for planting near a house. They DO show up in some unlikely places, though, like the one pictured here. It's at the entrance to the Pinnacle Peak General Store.

Spanish Dagger A large Yucca that IS suitable for a residential landscape is the Yucca aliofolia, also known as the Spanish Bayonet. The leaves on this plant are a dead give-away to the plant’s common name. Spanish Daggers get large. You can see how tall this plant is compared to the roof-line of the house and with a 10’+ spread if you decide to get one, make sure you give it ample space The leaves on these are 12’-18” long and it is normal for them to have multiple trunks. You can see that these Yucca provide quite a lot of shade for the plants underneath. Spanish Daggers don’t require much attention until they get about this size. Then, they require periodic pruning to keep the branches in check. Look carefully to spy the new growth at the base. Eventually, these branches will replace the older, taller ones which will make the plant easier to maintain - at least for awhile.

Yucca Habitat Yuccas of all stripes are native to the Americas and the Caribbean. They grow in a wide variety of climates from Florida to Canada. Yuccas are champs at desert living. And, now that you know what to look for, you’ll start seeing Yuccas everywhere.

Up Next Month We’ll be changing things up a bit next month in recognition of Grayhawk’s progress toward becoming a Monarch Waystation. We’ll start things off with a book review and then we’ll get into ways all of us can participate in attracting the imperiled Monarch butterfly to spend time with us.
