New Year, New Monument Signs The Grayhawk Architectural Review Committee has been working hard for some time to make some updates to the community monument signs. You may have even noticed our “test” sign on Hayden Road near Deer Valley Road, which has been having a bit of an identity crisis for a few months now. So, where are we with this not-so-little project? The Grayhawk Architectural Review committee and GCA staff members have been working with the City of Scottsdale to obtain approval for upgrades to the monument signs after lengthy deliberations regarding what the project should entail. The committee determined that tearing down the signs completely and starting over did not make sense, either logistically or financially. They did, however, take time to look at signs both in north Scottsdale and other parts of the valley to determine what look suited Grayhawk best. That brings us to today. The City of Scottsdale has now officially approved our request for the first phase of upgrades, which includes a new color scheme for the signs (dark brown), a new smooth coat surface application, and new lettering (white vs. the black previously found on the signs). Updates to four signs have already been completed, including those on Pima Road and Thompson Peak Parkway, two signs at Scottsdale Road and Grayhawk Drive, and another at Scottsdale Road and Thompson Peak Parkway. Work on the remaining 45 signs found in the community is scheduled to being in early 2019. In addition to the above mentioned updates, the Architectural Review Committee is looking at enhancing the stone on and around the monument signs. The committee is still in the process of selecting the best color and style for the stone and determining how to apply new stone to signs that don’t already have existing stone. Keep an eye out for more information regarding this project as we move into 2019!

Winter Reminders Now that temperatures have returned to comfortable levels for enjoying the outdoors, many more people are spending time outside in the community. Please keep the following reminders in mind next time you’re enjoying our beautiful winter weather: • When taking pets for a walk through the community, please remember to pick up their waste and dispose of it properly. There are pet waste stations throughout the community’s common areas to help maintain a clean landscape. • Please remember that it is against the law in Scottsdale and Maricopa County to have a dog off-leash (at large) in public. While we understand the desire to let a dog run off-leash, it is more important to follow the laws and keep the peace with neighbors. • Please be considerate when burning wood fires in your backyard. While fires are permitted (except on Maricopa County No Burn Days) in Grayhawk, your neighbors may have a medical condition that could be severely affected by the smoke from your fire. If wind conditions exist that can blow the smoke into their homes, refrain from burning or relocate the fire pit to a different area in your yard. • Any holiday lights must be taken down by January 31. • No personal motorized vehicles are permitted on the greenbelts and common areas in the community.

Beginning January 5 and ending January 13, the City is offering two ways for you to dispose of your unwanted live Christmas trees or wreaths.* 1. You can drop off your tree right here in Grayhawk at Thompson Peak Park (Thompson Peak Parkway and Hayden Road - in the north east parking lot). The City of Scottsdale will provide roll-off containers that are yellow in color and labeled for your disposal convenience. 2. Single-family home residents can place Christmas trees in your curbside green waste pile, separate from your bulk trash, for collection in your scheduled Brush/Bulk service week. Please remember if you utilize this option your tree must remain in your home until it is time for bulk pickup service, which is the week of January 21. * Please no artificial trees! Remove all stands, lights and ornaments.

Still Sweet and Salty Steakhouse Sweet Potatoes By Lori Bosch and daughter, Stephanie, Cachet at Grayhawk We are so fortunate to have such amazing Steakhouses in the Grayhawk area…Ruth’s Chris, Preston’s, Dominick’s, and Morton’s to name a few. Our absolute favorite side dish that we always order to share is the sweet potato casserole, which is available at Preston’s and Ruth’s Chris. It is a holiday staple for many, but we love it year-round! This recipe is a knock-off that Steph made this year for the holidays, and we will make whenever we grill steaks. The warm creamy potatoes taste delicious with the crumbly nutty topping. We’re sure it will be a hit in your home, or double the recipe and take it to a party… where it will be the first dish to disappear. It’s so perfectly sweetened that everyone will wonder if they are eating a side dish or a dessert. Enjoy! And always, always, always keep making your favorite holiday recipes all year long! We welcome your feedback, suggestions and recipe requests! Please feel free to email us at boschl@me.com.

Sip and Tell By Sue Lukenbill, Encore As I stand out in my patio watching the beautiful sunset, I enjoy reflecting about this time of the year and “Auld Lang Syne.” We have now lived in the Grayhawk Community for a total of 22 years that have been filled with wonderful memories. Actually each year just gets better! It is the enhancements, the landscaping, CCMC, and the people who live here that make Grayhawk the awesome community that it is! This January, things will be a little different for my husband, Bill and I. The two of us, along with our family will be flying to California to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary and relive the memories that took place back on January 18, 1969. The family is looking forward to seeing where we got married, our old homes and more. We can’t wait! But enough about me, you are reading this to hear about food, aren’t you? Well, depending on how you look at things the first Sip and Tell of the year this is either going to be a depressing or motivating article. After feasting at all of the parties and family get-togethers and endless amounts of rich food and cookies, I decided I needed a little break. Events like the Super Bowl, Waste Management Open and Spring Training will bring with them plenty of drinks and delicious food, so we might as well take a moment and attempt to cleanse our systems of all the junk! Rather than highlight one particular restaurant this month, I wanted to point out all of the fantastic and healthy options we have in our area. These are ether places we have reviewed (and loved) in the past, or spots that other residents or CCMC staff members frequent. You are likely already familiar with spots found here in Grayhawk. Kale and Clover is a fun place to go in the Fry’s Shopping Center. They offer fresh, delicious food and I know many residents love the variety of their menu, which includes vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and carnivorous options. The Poke Spot in the Grayhawk Plaza serves up - you guessed it- poke! They have fresh fish and tons of great toppings for your poke bowl. For those

that tend to steer clear of seafood, they also have delicious teriyaki meatballs. Nektar Juice Bar is also a popular spot right here in Grayhawk. It’s a chain, but I’ve heard MANY people say that our location is the friendliest around. They offer brightly flavored juices, smoothies and acai bowls. Grayhawk’s Director of Communications Jennifer Sheets and I recently visited Flower Child for the first time and I’d definitely recommend it as a healthy option. They use fresh ingredients from close to home and have options for just about everyone- vegetarian, vegan, paleo, sugar-free, dairy-free and more. And it’s all delicious! True Food Kitchen at Kierland Commons is an oldie, but definitely a goodie! There is a reason it’s always packed. The founders believe that food should make you feel better, not worse. I sure wish someone would’ve reminded me of that in December! There are other options that we haven’t gotten around to visiting yet, but I hear about quite a bit. Protein House offers clean options for those wanting healthy on the go. They have everything from protein pancakes to salads, high protein burgers to wellness shots. Bowl of Greens at the Scottsdale Promenade is popular with the Grayhawk office staff, although I have never been. They insist that the food is fantastic, and judging by the crowds I’ve seen there, they must be right. They offer smoothies, salads and plates including grilled chicken, salmon, roasted veggies and more. I hope this helps just a little with those New Year’s Resolutions. Being healthy is always at the top of my list! I wish everyone a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

Our Desert, Our Home Flight Behavior By Victoria Kauzlarich, Volare This month, we depart from our normal discussion of plants to review a book about Monarch butterflies. Monarchs require a specific habitat to survive and as their natural plant species have dwindled, so have the butterflies. We have the chance in Grayhawk to help - and in a big way. So, read on gentle reader and prepare for a bit of wonder.

Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver 433 pp. HarperCollins, 2012. $16.99 The oddly-named Dellarobia Turnbow lives in Feathertown, Tennessee where she and her young family barely eke out a living. She is married, the mother of two young children. Her life is bounded by her husband and kids, her in-laws, her church and her best friend, Dovey. Dellarobia married early - too early - out of necessity. Her in-laws built her house on their farm as a wedding gift to her and her husband, Cub. Cub is marginally employed. Dellarobia is a stayat-home mom. Dellarobia’s predictable and difficult life could easily have moved forward on its predictable and difficult path if it weren’t for butterflies - Monarch butterflies. These butterflies arrive to overwinter in Tennessee instead of Mexico; an ominous sign of something gone terribly wrong. This is a story fundamentally about Dellarobia and the precipice on which she stands. The novel opens with Dellarobia about to make a terrible mistake but the unexpected sight of the butterflies pulls her back because she cannot believe her uncorrected eyes. She’s left her glasses at home. Still, she knows she’s seen SOMETHING that isn’t normal. Something different. Something wondrous.

Thus begins the odyssey of Dellarobia’s internal life, played out in her first person narrative. Through it, we see an exploration of her family’s religious beliefs in rural culture. We see what happens when the also-oddly-named stranger, Ovid Byron, comes looking for the Turnbow farm and its butterflies. We see the clash between science and the undereducated and ultimately the clash between those who believe in climate change and those who don’t. And, the backdrop of it all is butterflies - the Monarchs - who have charted a new course away from Mexico to Tennessee. It is Dellarobia who asks the fundamental question of this novel, “Why the butterflies, why now. Why here?” Faith and science each yield different answers and, in the end, neither is especially satisfactory. There is a lot to chew on in this book. It is a fascinating tale made all the more so by Kingsolver’s writing style. She has a unique view of the ordinary and consistently describes it through comparisons and analogies that reveal a keen intellect as well as a watchful eye. Kingsolver is also a scientist, having earned degrees in biology from DePauw University and The University of Arizona. And, she is determined to make her writing accessible. Kingsolver describes Flight Behavior as a “…fictional story within a plausible biological framework.” From it, we gain insight into a variety of cultural cross-currents but what is most enlightening is what we learn about the Monarchs. These complicated, gorgeous insects are, for many reasons, under siege. They need our help. Flight Behavior is a book for a wide audience; adults and their teenaged children or grandchildren, book clubs and anyone who wants a well-told human interest story with an at-risk species at its center.

Grayhawk as a Monarch Waystation Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on only one type of plant: Milkweed shrubs. The good news is that there are Milkweed species native to nearly every region of the US. Ours is the Desert Milkweed (Asclepias subulata). The bad news is that as urban areas sprawl ever further, we are destroying habitat essential to Monarch butterfly survival. You may have learned some months ago that Grayhawk has planted approximately 300 Desert Milkweed shrubs. These 300 shrubs will go a long way toward bringing Monarchs into Grayhawk. Truly, if you plant them, they will come. Monarch on a Desert Milkweed
