Manager’s Corner

This month I would also like to address community safety throughout Grayhawk. However, I would first like to commend Grayhawk’s patrol staff for the outstanding job they do and for the great service they provide to all of you as homeowners. Grayhawk is a very large community and, due to its size, the patrol staff deals with a wide range of safety concerns – some of these they are able to resolve while others require involvement from outside entities, such as the Scottsdale Police Department, APS, or the City of Scottsdale, for example.

When dealing with safety/security issues, the primary responsibility for the community patrol officer is to observe and report what has occurred, and, if possible, attempt to resolve the problem or situation. This is often not possible because, as I am sure you are aware, Grayhawk’s patrol staff does not perform police duties or functions, and they have been instructed to never put themselves in harm’s way.

However, Grayhawk’s patrol staff have been effective in addressing many, mostly minor, types of issues that occur within our community. If you observe any suspicious activity in your neighborhood or in a common area located in Grayhawk, please report this to the Grayhawk Community Association (GCA) office at 480-563-9708 during business hours (Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.) or the on-site patrol staff by calling either the Raptor guardhouse at 480-502-5078 or the Talon guardhouse at 480-502-7685, and a community patrol officer will be dispatched to the area. You are also encouraged to report any mischievous or inappropriate behavior by children or others within the community such as skateboarding, electric bicycle or bicycle riding on the tennis courts; driving a motorized vehicle on the community trail system or in the greenbelts; or defacing neighborhood monument signs, ramadas, or mailbox structures. I mention these examples because these activities have all been reported to the GCA office.

The month of May offers many opportunities for celebration; Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, High School Graduations and Memorial Day. The Grayhawk team encourages each of you to celebrate your traditions, milestones and memories with vigor. We would love to share some of your celebratory photos in a future issue of the Flight. Please share them with Jennifer Sheets at jsheets@ccmcnet.com.

In closing, I hope everyone enjoys the Memorial Day Holiday and respectfully acknowledge all that have served to protect our country and continue to celebrate at every opportunity with enthusiasm.

In closing,

Executive Director, Grayhawk

BOARD BRIEFS

Grayhawk Master Association Board of Directors Meeting – April

1, 2024

HOMEOWNER FORUM

A homeowner inquired about communication from the Association for immediate issues that arise with neighbors. Ashley Scott explained the community utilizes a few avenues of communication such as The Grayhawk Buzz (eNews), social media and The Grayhawk Flight magazine. She also addressed the concerns of why we do not share sensitive information regarding residents and their property.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS

Motion to elect David Van Omen as President, Paul Alessio as Vice-President, Derek Moore as Treasurer, and Richard Zielinski as Secretary. The motion was second and motion carried.

DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

Paul Alessio shared that no date had yet been set for the land auction of the parcel on the northwest corner of Scottsdale Road and Loop 101. The Arizona Coyotes have expressed interest in this land and proposed renderings have been released online.

OPERATIONAL REVIEW COMMITTEE

Don Morse presented information from the March 25 Operational Review Committee meeting.

APS experienced a wide-spread power outage in March which impacted large portions of the Retreat, including both guardhouses. During the outage, some barrier arms did not open as they are designed to do during a power failure and the backup generators did not trigger at either guardhouse. The committee is working with ParkPro, regular gate vendor, to prevent these incidents from happening in the future. The Operational Review Committee has begun researching replacement options for the 4 Runner patrol vehicle which has 100k miles. The other 4 Runner was replaced with a Rav 4 Hybrid earlier this year which has resulted in savings in fuel costs. The next replacement vehicle will need to be able to access desert trail when needed as the Rav 4 does not have this capability.

The community patrol is currently down one staff member. A revision to the Barrier Arm Policy was reviewed by legal counsel. A motion was made to recommend approval of the revised Barrier Arm Policy, It will be reviewed by the Retreat Village Association Board of Directors.

Revisions and overview of the Emergency Preparedness Plan were discussed. The current policy is available on the website for all to review.

LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE

Arlene Smith presented the Landscape Committee report. The full committee did not meet in March, however the AdHoc Committee met twice at the new Educational Garden. The AdHoc Committee provided guidance for the placement of plants and benches, and individual garden and plant signs. The committee is very excited for the completion of this community enhancement project.

Substantial rains throughout March have allowed our landscapers to turn off the irrigation systems which is saving the association money on water.

Plant renovations throughout the community continue and the 2024 Spring tree pruning project is currently underway.

The wall stabilizer project in Pinnacle will begin in early April. The board approved curbing and erosion project and Monterey and Montevina Monument turf reductions will take place in May.

COMMUNITY ENHANCEMENT COMMITTEE

Richard Zielinski reported that the Community Enhancement (CE) committee did not meet.

EVENT PLANNING COMMITTEE

Ashley Scott reported that the committee met on March 25 to discuss past and upcoming events. The Easter Egg Hunt had more than 600 people in attendance where kids collected goodie filled eggs and families were able to have their photos taken with the Easter Bunny while mingling with neighbors.

Upcoming events include Concert in the Park, Family BBQ, Walk and Talk Wednesday, and a New Homeowner Orientation.

Community Manger Ashley Scott introduced our new Lifestyle Director Ashlie Adamscheck.

BOARD

Do Not Feed Wildlife

Animals like bobcats, coyotes and javelina are very active in the Grayhawk community. Grayhawk maintenance staff regularly observe signs of residents or vendors leaving food for wildlife. However, feeding wildlife is a bad practice that can lead to potentially dangerous encounters between animals and humans.

While feeding wildlife might seem like the nice thing to do, it is actually conditioning animals to frequent specific locations and increasing the chance of human-wildlife conflict. In 2006, the Arizona Legislature passed a law (13-2927. Unlawful feeding of wildlife; classification) making it illegal to feed wildlife in Maricopa and Pima counties.

While some are purposely feeding wildlife, that is not always the case. You may not be intentionally feeding wildlife, but if you are leaving trash or pet food outside you could still be soliciting the visits. To reduce the chance of an unwanted encounter, do not feed the wildlife, keep trash secured and pet food indoors. Remember that for their safety, you should always watch small pets when they are outside.

Association Emails

One of the easiest ways to stay connected in your community is by receiving Association emails. Emails are the best way for the Board of Directors and CCMC management team to update residents on upcoming events, community projects, area development and more. If you aren’t already signed up to receive The Buzz every Monday, you can email Jennifer Sheets at jsheets@ ccmcnet.com to get set up.

Once you’ve opted in for the community eblast, there are a few things you should do to ensure delivery to your inbox:

1. Add listserv@civicplus.com to your email contact/safe sender list.

2. Check your inbox on Mondays to see if you received The Buzz. If not, check your spam. Often, bulk emails

are sent to spam and you can “report as not spam” and send those messages to your inbox instead.

3. If you added the above email address to your contacts and did not receive the email in your inbox or your spam folder, you may want to reach out to your email provider and ask if they have security settings that might be preventing a bulk email from coming through and what you can do to allow it.

We have noticed that residents that use a cox.com email specifically are having this problem. If you have been using a Cox email and haven’t had a problem, great! However, if you don’t believe you are receiving Grayhawk eblasts and have Cox email on file, please reach out to see what we can do to get you set up.

We are here to help. If you have questions, please reach out to management staff at 480-563-9708 or email Jennifer Sheets at jsheets@ccmcnet.com.

END OF YEAR WRAP-UP

As we reach the end of another outstanding school year, I am filled with immense gratitude and pride for the extraordinary journey we have shared together. It has been a year marked by countless achievements, growth, and memorable moments that make our school community so special.

We celebrated a significant milestone in our school's history - our 25th anniversary! This provided us with a valuable opportunity to reflect on 25 amazing years and to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of our students, faculty, staff, and families. It was an honor to receive a proclamation from the mayor, declaring November 3rd as Grayhawk Elementary School Day in the city of Scottsdale, further recognizing our enduring commitment to education and community engagement.

I am thrilled to announce that we are continuing to lead from the front when it comes to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education.

I am thrilled to share that 75% of all Paradise Valley Unified School District students in fifth and sixth grade who qualified for the state science fair, proudly hailed from Grayhawk Elementary School! This remarkable accomplishment is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion of our students, teachers, and staff.

Our school also was honored this year with an award from the state for our exceptional Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) practices. This recognition highlights our unwavering commitment to fostering a nurturing, inclusive, and supportive environment where every student can thrive and succeed.

As we embark on the summer break, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our incredible students, dedicated teachers and staff, and supportive families for making this school year truly exceptional. Together, we have achieved great success and created memories that I’m sure will last a lifetime. I look forward to welcoming everyone back in the fall for another year filled with learning, growth, and endless possibilities.

If you or someone you know is looking for an “A” rated school, in an outstanding community, we are currently accepting in-boundary enrollment, as well as open enrollment applications, at all grade levels for the 2024-25 school year. Please visit our PTO website - grayhawkpto.com to learn more about Grayhawk and to set up a tour.
