SPIRITS RISE
The internationally touring Balloon Museum has brought its immersive Pop Air – Art is Inflatable exhibition to the Mana Wynwood Convention Center, where it runs through Sept. 27. Created by Italy-based Lux Entertainment, the exhibition features giant inflatable sculptures, interactive installations, and colorful characters that invite visitors to play rather than simply observe. While designed for all ages, the experience encourages adults to reconnect with childlike wonder: glide on giant swings, swim in a bubble pit, or disco with Ginjos (delightful creatures that resemble the Pac-Man ghosts). After your exploration, enjoy a drink and a snack at the Balloon Bar. Visit balloonmuseum.world for tickets.

The La Concha Hotel celebrates 100 years of elegance in the Conch Republic
PHOTO COURTESY OF ALLIED GLOBAL MARKETING
Few hotels embody the spirit of Key West like La Concha, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. Opened in January 1926 and located directly on Duval Street, this “Grand Dame” quickly became one of the island's most luxurious destinations, attracting famous names such as Ernest Hemingway; Tennessee Williams, who completed A Streetcar Named Desire during a stay; and President Harry S. Truman. Following an extensive 2025 renovation, the hotel blends its historic character with modern comforts and a vibrant MidCentury aesthetic. Guests can cool off at the chic Pool Club, indulge in a complimentary mojito tasting at Tropicado, or savor Cuban fusion cuisine at Perla. Wellness-minded travelers will appreciate La Concha’s optional Pure Wellness guest rooms that feature purified air, hypoallergenic surfaces, and allergy-friendly bedding. Select rooms also offer hearing-accessible features with visual alarms and notification devices. Visit laconchakeywest.com to reserve.

STUBBORN SEED Stubborn Seed has earned a Michelin star for its thoughtful tasting menus and impeccable service. Grove Bay Hospitality Group and “Top Chef ” winner Jeremy Ford have created a truly unique three-course dinner for Miami Spice. Start off with a foie gras torchon with tomato yuzu jam, peanut miso crumble, and Sullivan Street sesame sourdough; followed by the “Stubborn” truffle chicken with pomme puree, Brussels sprouts and natural jus. End the night with a citrus pavlova with candied pistachio, yuzu curd, olive oil cake, mandarin basil sorbet, and matcha meringue. Miami Spice is offered for dinner Thursday through Sunday for $65 per person.
James Beard Awardwinning chef Michael Schwartz’s eponymous classic, Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink, is one of Miami’s best-loved and most enduring restaurants. The chef ’s approach to Miami Spice is to serve memorable meals made with locally sourced ingredients. Hence, there is no set menu for the prix-fixe Miami Spice lunches and dinners on offer. Instead, diners will be surprised and delighted with dishes that change several times a week. Some favorites will be offered throughout Miami Spice, such as a wood-roasted oyster mushroom entree served with dill-pickled asparagus, whipped tuna conserva toast, and woodroasted zucchini. Miami Spice is offered for lunch on weekdays for $40 and for dinner daily for $50.

WHEN ELENA DUNI hears the phrase "Pilates princess," she winces. The founder of SQLPT, a boutique mat-based Pilates studio with locations in Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton and Brickell, wants to dismantle the stereotype that Pilates is simply a fashionable workout for influencers in matching sets. "Pilates is for everybody," Duni says. "But it's not for every mindset." For Duni, Pilates isn't about social media, mirror selfies, or chasing the latest fitness trend. It's about learning how to move well enough to carry groceries without hurting your back, pick up your children with confidence, or simply maintain mobility as you age. "It's functional movement," she says. "It's about creating a body that serves you for life." That philosophy was born from experience. Eight years ago, after the birth of her son, Duni worked at a job that, while lucrative, didn’t feed her soul. A series of personal tragedies were weighing on her mind and body – literally. Feeling not like herself at 185 pounds on a petite frame, Duni was dragged to a Pilates studio in Macedonia by her aunt. "I hated it," she laughs. "Everyone around me could hold a plank for a minute and a half. I couldn't hold one for 10 seconds. But I kept coming back." She committed to practicing five days a week, overhauled her diet, and eventually lost 60 pounds—long before GLP-1 medications like Ozempic transformed the weight-loss conversation. "It wasn't a shortcut," she says. "It was consistency. That's still what I teach today." Her training also set her apart. Rather than learning in a traditional boutique fitness environment, Duni trained through a hospital-affiliated rehabilitation program in Eastern Europe, where physical therapy patients transitioned into Pilates before returning to everyday life. Not that far after, Duni found herself working with post-surgical patients, NFL athletes, and people recovering from significant injuries. Those experiences became the foundation of the SQLPT

method, which emphasizes anatomy, alignment, and longevity over calorie burn. "If your alignment is wrong, nothing else matters," she says. "Movement should make your body function better." That conviction became deeply personal in 2020. When Duni's younger brother was diagnosed with cancer, doctors warned he might never walk again. She refused to accept that prognosis.Through rehabilitation and Pilates, he gradually regained strength. Today, he is six months into remission. "I told him, 'We're going to prove them wrong,'" she recalls. "Watching that recovery reminded me why this work matters." The road to building SQLPT wasn't easy. Three years ago, Duni says she was carrying $80,000 in debt. She left a prestigious career at Louis Vuitton, where she served as a regional director, because something was missing. "It looked successful," she says. "But it didn't feel purposeful." Without investors, loans, or wealthy backers, she built SQLPT from the ground up while raising two children. In just over a year, the company has expanded to three South Florida studios, with locations in Miami, Boca Raton, and Fort Lauderdale. Duni isn’t stopping there: she has solid plans to open four additional studios in the coming months. Her classes have earned a reputation for being demanding, and she makes no apologies for that. She
also admits that training at one of her studios might feel repetitive – but that’s what builds muscle memory, strength, and a lifelong change to both body and mind. "I don't promise fun," she says. "I promise results." Clients quickly learn that details matter— engaging the correct muscles, protecting the spine and moving with intention. Those corrections, she believes, are what transform Pilates from exercise into a lifelong practice. As wellness continues evolving away from highintensity workouts and toward longevity, mobility and recovery, Duni believes Pilates is finally being understood for what it has always been. "We're living longer," she says. "If we want to stay independent into our 80s and 90s, we have to train differently." For Duni, that's the future of fitness—not chasing perfection, but building a body capable of carrying you through life.

Recovery Finds Community
SOUTH FLORIDA WELLNESS NETWORK IS USING LIVED EXPERIENCE AND PEER SUPPORT TO HELP PEOPLE NAVIGATE MENTAL HEALTH, SUBSTANCE USE, AND TRAUMA. BY
J E S S E
S C O T T
or Susan Nyamora, recovery work has never been theoretical. The president and CEO of South Florida Wellness Network (SFWN) has spent the past dozen years building an organization around a belief she knows intimately: people heal differently when they are supported by someone who has been there. “I am a person in long-term recovery,” Nyamora says. “I have navigated the behavioral health system in Broward County, including jails and institutions. This year, I will celebrate 20 years in recovery and have been able to put my life back together.” That lived experience now fuels one of South Florida’s most impactful recovery organizations. Since 2014, South Florida Wellness Network has provided one-on-one peer support services to more than 20,000 individuals across Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Its work spans mental health, substance use, trauma, family support, crisis response, advocacy, harm reduction, and workforce development. The model is personal on purpose. SFWN is peer-driven, meaning its staff members bring lived or living experience of recovery themselves, or as family members of someone in recovery. “Everybody that works for us has lived or living experiences,” Nyamora says. “We have artists, musicians, graphic designers, all different types of individuals that have come in to get healing and to also fulfill their purpose, and that’s to help other people.” When Nyamora first arrived, the organization existed largely in name. The board handed her “a couple of boxes of material” and told her to build it. Today, SFWN has roughly 93 staff members, multiple Broward locations, and an office in Miami-Dade. In Fort Lauderdale, SFWN offers adult services, including recovery navigation, support groups, court advocacy and connections to health care, detox, employment and other essential needs. Its pregnant and parenting recovery community center supports parents with resources ranging from lactation guidance to stress management. “We’re really like their coach and their champion,” Nyamora says. “We’re right here with you and we’re going to do it alongside of you.” The Hollywood office focuses on youth and families, with music, video games and creative programming designed to meet young people where
they are. In Miami, the space doubles as an art-forward environment, featuring works by individuals experiencing mental health conditions. “Whatever works,” Nyamora says. “We’re serving the community in the capacities that they need.” The numbers underscore the reach. In 2025, SFWN distributed more than 31,000 Narcan nasal spray kits and documented 123 overdose reversals. On average, participants receive direct services for 273 days. For Nyamora, the work is also about reframing the conversation. “Most people think of it as drug use and mental illness,” she says. “I look at it as health. If I take care of my brain health, then I'll want to take care of the rest of my body.” The challenges in South Florida are acute. Nyamora points to families experiencing homelessness, seniors in psychological distress, and the health complications tied to the region’s climate. “A simple thing is a shower,” she says. “They can’t get a shower.” She also sees stigma play out through resistance to services in certain communities. “This is healthcare,” she says. “It’s really about caring for people differently.” Looking ahead, housing has become a central focus. SFWN is exploring partnerships to create short-term housing options that provide stability before transitioning individuals into longer-term solutions. “Housing is a form of harm reduction,” she says. “When people have a safe place to lay their head down at night, they can put their thought processes together.” SFWN welcomes volunteers and donations of hygiene products, but Nyamora encourages people to see the work firsthand. Her message, shaped by two decades in recovery and years leading SFWN, remains steady. “Don’t give up till the miracle happens,” Nyamora says. “There’s nothing better than seeing people on the other side.” LMGFL.COM AUGUST 2026 45

At 40,000 Feet, Wellness Is on the Menu MINDFUL EATING TAKES TO THE SKIES WITH THE HELP OF SILVER LINING IN FLIGHT CATERING
BY
L A I N E
D O S S
or nearly three decades, Mike Linder has watched food trends come and go. The veteran restaurateur and CEO of Silver Lining Inflight Catering has prepared thousands of meals for passengers aboard private jets. Today, he says, one trend stands above the rest: people are eating more mindfully than ever before. "The younger generation has become much more knowledgeable about food," Linder says. "They're eating healthier, drinking less, and paying much more attention to what goes into their bodies." It's a dramatic shift from when he began in the restaurant business nearly 30 years ago. Diners once indulged like Versailles royalty, ordering multiple appetizers, large entrees, and decadent desserts without much thought. Today, many split meals, skip alcohol, or look for cleaner ingredients. People are now more health-conscious, a trend Linder says has only accelerated with the rise of GLP-1 medications and a broader focus on wellness. That same philosophy has found its way into private aviation. Passengers who once requested rich comfort foods now ask for proteinpacked meals, cold-pressed juices, seed oil-free ingredients, and menus tailored to specific lifestyles. Vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free and high-protein requests have become routine. For Linder, catering to dietary specifications is the name of the game. "We tailor every aircraft to the passengers," Linder says. "The top tier of travelers all have different diets, and it's our job to deliver exactly what they want." His company now offers dedicated protein, juice, and wellness menus
designed to keep travelers energized rather than sluggish during a flight. Instead of arriving feeling weighed down after a heavy meal, clients want food that leaves them refreshed and ready for a meeting or vacation. "No one wants to leave a restaurant—or an airplane—not feeling good," he says. Meeting those expectations requires far more than good recipes. Linder's operation prepares roughly 150 orders each day, often with less than 12 hours' notice. Every meal is made fresh and is carefully handled and marked for allergies, dietary restrictions, and special requests before being delivered to airports throughout South Florida. "It's a huge logistics operation," he says. "Every invoice is marked. We have labels for celiac disease, vegan meals, shellfish allergies—everything." Although private aviation represents about 70 percent of the business, Linder says the same wellness philosophy has expanded into private homes and events, where clients increasingly request customized menus built around their lifestyles. For him, the shift reflects a broader cultural change. People track their fitness with smart watches, monitor their sleep, prioritize hydration, and think differently about nutrition than they did even a decade ago. To keep up with these healthful trends, Silver Lining is introducing PURE – a new menu program that will launch in fall 2026 and focuses on mindful meals and juices. "It's about clean food, hydration and making people feel good,” says Linder. After 27 years in the hospitality industry, Linder believes luxury is no longer defined by excess. Today, the ultimate indulgence is food that tastes exceptional—and leaves you feeling your best. LMGFL.COM AUGUST 2026 47

Stacy Ritter, president and CEO of Visit Lauderdale. "Through this collaboration with the Pantone Color Institute, we've translated those qualities into a visual language that captures the essence of our community. This palette gives us a new way to tell our story and celebrate the people, places and experiences that make Greater Fort Lauderdale so distinctive." The shade names were developed with local input. Visit Lauderdale invited tourism and hospitality professionals to help identify them during the organization's annual marketing luncheon. "Greater Fort Lauderdale is a destination where color lives and breathes, from the luminous blues of the Intracoastal to the warm, golden tones that settle across the shoreline at dusk," says Laurie Pressman, vice president of Pantone Color Institute. "Working with Visit Lauderdale, we translated that sensory experience into a custom palette that captures the distinct personality and energy of the destination." Visit Lauderdale plans to incorporate the palette across marketing campaigns, creative partnerships, events and visitor experiences. Visit Lauderdale, the official destination marketing organization for Broward County, has partnered with the Pantone Color Institute to develop a custom color palette built around the character of the area. The collection draws from the destination's most recognizable features: the blue-green of the Intracoastal, the golden cast of late-afternoon light on the beach, the soft haze of ocean air. Each of the eight shades carries a name to match, including Radiant Sunrise, Nautical Breeze, LauderTeal, Seafoam, Ocean Mist, and Golden Shore. hen pharmacist Jean-Yves "Jay" Muller opened Consult Rx Pharmacy in Fort Lauderdale during COVID, he wasn't simply starting a business. He was creating the kind of independent pharmacy he always wished he could work in. After years with large corporate chains, including Sam's Club, and experience at independent pharmacies, he says the difference came down to one thing: people. "Corporate pharmacy is performance-driven," he says. "Everything is about numbers. Consult Rx is purpose-driven. It's about making sure the patient gets the medication they need." That philosophy shapes every interaction. Rather than seeing hundreds of anonymous customers, he knows his patients by name, asks about their families, and builds relationships that extend well beyond filling prescriptions. "It's personal," he says. "You know the doctors, you know the patient, and you can provide care that's specific to them." He also believes independent pharmacies have greater flexibility in helping patients find affordable medications, including specialized therapies such as bioidentical hormone replacement and weightmanagement medications. "It's not just about profit," he says. "It's about making sure people can actually afford their medication." While dispensing prescriptions is an important part of the job, Muller says it represents only a fraction of what he does each day. "The dispensing part is only one piece of what we do," he says. "Most of my day is spent helping patients truly understand the medicines they are taking." Muller’s time is also spent answer questions and speaking with physicians.Muller also offers free diabetes education sessions that can help educate and empower people diagnosed with the disease. In the end, it all comes down to building trust.
That trust becomes especially important for patients who see multiple doctors. A specialist may prescribe one medication, a pain management physician another, and a primary care doctor a third. Add vitamins and over-the-counter supplements, and the risk of drug interactions increases significantly. "We become the center of the umbrella," he explains. "We make sure medications don't interact, that patients know when and how to take them, and that everything makes sense." He says independent pharmacies also tend to spend more time evaluating prescriptions that larger chains may automatically decline. "Instead of immediately saying no, we ask questions," he says. "We're the last line of defense." Muller believes one of the biggest differences between independent and corporate pharmacies is accessibility. Patients aren't greeted by layers of automated phone menus or rushed through consultations. Instead, they can call, stop by, sit down, and have a conversation with the pharmacist. While technology has made filling prescriptions more convenient through electronic prescribing, text messaging, and home delivery, he believes it shouldn't replace personal relationships. "I have patients who call just to talk or even just send me memes," he says. "Some people don't have anyone else, and they know they can reach me." Those conversations, he says, are just as important as filling a prescription. Building trust encourages patients to ask questions they might otherwise ignore, leading to better understanding of their medications and, ultimately, better health outcomes. For Muller, that's what owning an independent pharmacy is all about. "You'll never have that type of relationship at a big chain," he says. "It's about helping people. That's why I became a pharmacist." Visit consultrxpharmacy.com to book an appointment. LMGFL.COM AUGUST 2026 51

veryday life is hectic. A constant flow of work and family obligations, coupled with an endless supply of technology, can be overwhelming. Oftentimes, weekend getaways feel so rushed and packed with activities that you’re more tired upon return than when you left. If you’re looking for a true break from the outside world, it’s closer than you think. Little Palm Island in the lower Florida Keys feels less like a resort and more like a reset button. Long before guests reach their thatched-roof bungalow, the scene is set. Driving up to the island Shore Station at mile marker 28.5 on Little Torch Key, you’re greeted by a team that will take care of your car and your baggage (both literal and figurative), while placing a complimentary rum punch in your hand. After a short 15-minute complimentary cruise on the island’s own motor yacht, a Little Palm Island team member will give you a brief tour of the island: the dining room where breakfast and dinner are served, the monkey hut for sundowners and after-dinner drinks, the pool and beach, and the Truman Outhouse – a former outhouse, now converted into a private
booth in which to make cell phone calls if you must. Little Palm Island discourages cell phone calls in all public areas. Also verboten: drone usage and smoking in public areas. There are no TVs in your suite, no traffic sounds, no crowds, and no pressure to fill every hour with activity. Instead, you hear rustling palms, gentle waves, and birdsong. The biggest competition at Little Palm is an informal tally of how many Key Deer you can spot, and the only time you might need your watch is to make sure you make your spa appointment on time. That slower pace creates magic – and connection. At the poolside palapa bar, friendships are made over Spa Coladas and Jungle Birds. Liz or one of the other bartenders will make sure you stay hydrated with bottled waters and crispy Diet Cokes with extra lime. Laptops are traded for paper books. Time is marked by the tide, not watches. That’s not to say there’s ever a dull moment. Guests can fill their day with snorkeling, kayaking or paddleboarding. You can take one of the property’s Boston Whalers out for a spin, or spot key deer paddling in from nearby keys.
The SpaTerre plays a large role at the resort and embraces treatments inspired by nature, combining tropical botanicals with global healing traditions. Alessandra, for instance, described every potion and elixir used, along with its soothing and plumping properties. Body rituals are complemented by beach yoga, guided meditation, and personal training for guests seeking a more active form of restoration. The emphasis isn't on transformation through intensity but on reconnecting with body and mind through stillness and mindful movement. At the Dining Room, executive chef Rodrigo Albornoz’s ever-rotating menu features locally sourced seafood, seasonal produce, and globally inspired flavors, with each meal designed to unfold slowly rather than be rushed. Private beach dinners and chef-curated tasting menus encourage diners to savor not only the food but the setting itself. Without cell phones, conversation flows, and sunsets become entertainment. Science has increasingly shown that periods of true rest reduce stress hormones, improve mood, and enhance creativity. While wellness tourism often focuses on fitness classes and biohacking, Little Palm Island embraces healing through relaxation and beauty. It is an approach that feels refreshingly countercultural. Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do isn't another workout, another procedure, or another meditation app. Sometimes it's simply sitting beneath a palm tree with a drink in your hand, listening to the ocean, and allowing yourself to do nothing at all. MICHAEL FUNK, MD, FACC, FACP NATASHA TATE, ARNP, FNP-C MULTIMED VIP CONCIERGE INTERNAL MEDICINE AND CARDIOLOGY 1881 N UNIVERSITY DRIVE, SUITE 110, CORAL SPRINGS, FL 33071 954-710-0107 What is the biggest misconception patients/clients have when they first meet you? Many people expect a quick fix or immediate answers during their first visit. They often assume that a diagnosis and treatment plan can be determined right away. In reality, the first appointment is about gathering a thorough medical history, building trust, understanding their concerns, setting goals, and developing a personalized plan of care. Taking the time to understand each patient’s story allows us to create the most effective treatment plan together. What gives you satisfaction in your field? One of the most rewarding aspects of this profession is seeing patients better understand their diagnosis, take an active role in managing their health, and improve their quality of life through teamwork. We enjoy using our clinical knowledge and critical thinking skills to identify diseases, recognize complications after surgery, and detect early signs of preventable conditions. Knowing that we have provided the same level of care we would want for our own family is incredibly fulfilling. We also value that healthcare is a lifelong learning profession, allowing us to continually grow and provide the highest quality care for our patients. What sets your practice apart from others? We are a multispecialty practice dedicated to providing comprehensive, patient-centered care. We take the time to listen to our patients, understand their unique needs, and build meaningful relationships based on trust and respect. Our team is committed to delivering exceptional customer service while always putting the patient first. We advocate for both our patients and their families and are able to manage multiple medical conditions within our practice whenever appropriate, reducing the need for unnecessary referrals and providing more coordinated, convenient care. DR. TIFFANY SIZEMORE DI PIETRO, DO, FACC, FACOI FOUNDER, CARDIOLOGIST & CONCIERGE MEDICINE PHYSICIAN DI PIETRO HEALTH 305 SE 18th Court, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316 954.523.4141 | DiPietroHealth.com | Office@DiPietroHealth.com How are AI and other technologies changing your field? AI is revolutionizing how we approach preventive cardiology. We now have tools that detect heart disease risk earlier and more precisely than ever, from advanced cardiometabolic testing to AIassisted imaging that catches what the human eye might miss. At Di Pietro Health, we embrace precision medicine, meaning technology helps us tailor care to each individual patient rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s an exciting time to be in this field. What’s the biggest misconception patients have when you first meet them? That because heart disease runs in their family, there’s nothing they can do about it. Genetics loads the gun, but lifestyle pulls the trigger. The most empowering thing I can tell a patient is that the choices they make every single day have an enormous impact on their cardiac future. Precision medicine exists precisely to help us identify those risks early and intervene before they become a

problem. Your family history is information, not a sentence. What advice do you have for patients to live a healthier life? Stop waiting until something is wrong. The whole philosophy behind concierge medicine is getting ahead of disease, not just treating it. Move your body daily, prioritize sleep, manage stress, and know your numbers: cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar. I also tell patients that their doctor should feel like a partner, not a stranger they see once a year for seven minutes. When you have access and a real relationship, you make better decisions together. What gives you satisfaction in your field? Honestly, it’s the moments when a patient says, “You actually listened to me.” In a world where physicians are seeing 30 plus patients a day, we’ve built something different here. When someone leaves our office with a clear plan, feeling genuinely cared for, that’s everything.

KEVIN MOSCA, DO MOSCA PLASTIC SURGERY 1010 S Federal Hwy; Suite 101, Delray Beach, FL 33483 561-213-9693 info@drbocaraton.com @drbocaraton How are AI and other technologies changing your field? Modern technology advances with photoshopping, editing, and even AI have made the field of plastic surgery incredibly challenging. Patients coming in are showing “wish pictures” or aspiring to look like such altered photos of “perfection” that they set unrealistic expectations for both their surgeon, and even themselves. It’s our jobs as surgeons to inform prospective patients to avoid the pitfalls of trying to achieve the unobtainable perfection that is created with editing tools and AI than in real life. What’s the biggest misconception patients/clients have when you first meet them? Prospective patients coming for a consultation have this misconception when we first meet that everything is in absolutes. Everything is either all bad or all good. You will come as you are and leave as you wish. Recovery is a breeze. Things happen overnight. These are all misconceptions. What patients need to realize is that they are patients… this is medicine, it’s art, and most important, it’s surgery. You have to give your body time and respect, and follow all instructions in order to give yourself the best chance at healing properly. What gives you satisfaction in your field? The most satisfying aspect of plastic surgery is being able to deliver incredible, life-changing results to patients on a daily basis and seeing their honest reactions of joy. Nothing is more satisfying than just hearing confidence return to a woman’s voice and seeing it in her eyes/ expressions when they talk in post-op appointments. LMGFL.COM AUGUST 2026 69

I am considered a pioneer of laser cataract surgery and recognized by physicians as a preeminent expert in eye laser surgery. Laser cataract surgery provides far better visual results and safety compared to traditional cataract surgery. A laser can now perform 90% of the procedure flawlessly in 30 seconds. This painless procedure takes only five minutes from start to finish, which includes the implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL). There are no shots, no stitches, nor any patches! Patients can resume normal activities the next day, including driving, working, and exercising. The quality of vision is outstanding for driving, working on a computer, and reading, including all the focal lengths in between. Surgeons & Consultants as “South Florida’s Best Eye Surgery” Team for 2026. There are a lot of health care professionals in South Florida. What separates you and your practice from others in your field? My surgical volume has increased significantly over time, driven largely by patient referrals and referrals from fellow healthcare professionals. To date, I have performed more than 30,000 cataract surgeries with extremely pleased patients who have stellar visual outcomes. More than 250 physicians and their family members have trusted me to perform cataract surgery on their own eyes, standing as a meaningful professional endorsement of my surgical skills and quality of care. For decades, South Florida physicians have called me, “the physician’s physician.”

DR. ANDREA BRETAL, MD MEDICAL DIRECTOR
Weston Medical Health and Wellness 1605 Town Center Blvd., Ste. D, Weston, Fl 33326 954-389-1800/www.westondiet.com What excites you the most about recent developments in health care? The shift from treating disease to preventing it. Today we can identify risks much earlier through advanced diagnostics, biomarkers, and personalized medicine, allowing us to optimize health instead of simply reacting to illness. What do you find growing in popularity among your clientele? Patients are looking beyond weight loss. They want more energy, better cognitive function, healthy aging, hormone optimization, metabolic health, and sciencebased longevity strategies that improve both lifespan and healthspan. What are the key differentiators for your offerings and service? Our practice combines evidence-based medicine with highly personalized care. We focus on the root causes of health concerns, using comprehensive evaluations, advanced testing, peptides, hormone optimization, medical weight management, and lifestyle interventions to create individualized treatment plans. What is the impact on AI for your practice and patient education? AI is becoming a valuable tool for education, communication, and analyzing complex health information. It helps us explain concepts more effectively and improve efficiency, while clinical judgment, physician experience, and the doctor-patient relationship remain irreplaceable. What is the impact of social media on client awareness and expectations? Social media has made patients more informed and engaged, but it also creates misinformation. One of our most important roles is helping patients separate trends from science and providing recommendations supported by medical evidence. What’s next on the horizon that gets you excited about health care? The future lies in precision longevity medicine, combining genetics, biomarkers, regenerative therapies, peptides, metabolic optimization, and wearable technology to create proactive, personalized healthcare that helps people live longer, healthier, and more vibrant lives.

Behavioral health and substance use affect every family, every neighborhood, and every sector of our community. Whether through personal experience or someone we love, nearly all of us have been touched by challenges with mental health, substance misuse, or suicide. No one is immune, and that is why prevention, early intervention, and community collaboration are more important than ever. What is United Way Broward’s Coalition on Behavioral Health and Drug Prevention? For more than 85 years, United Way Broward has brought a comprehensive approach to every challenge, actively listening and responding to local needs. In response to the ongoing mental health and substance misuse in our community, United Way established the Coalition on Behavioral Health & Drug Prevention. The Coalition mobilizes healthcare providers, schools, law

enforcement, local government, faith-based groups, nonprofits, businesses, and residents to create a unified response, backed by data, for the behavioral health needs of our community. Through comprehensive community assessments, direct services, town halls, listening sessions, and cross-sector partnerships, we identify emerging needs, elevate community voices, and cocreate sustainable solutions that are changing and saving lives. How significant is the need for mental health and behavioral health resources? The need is significant. More than one in five U.S. adults experiences a mental health condition each year, and suicide remains one of the leading causes of death among young people. Substance use continues to devastate families: Broward County recorded more than 400 fatal overdoses in 2024, and emergency medical services responded to more than 4,500 overdose incidents. These numbers include parents, children, friends, coworkers, and neighbors whose lives have been altered forever.

While the need is clearly there, the Coalition is committed to changing the current reality. We are seeing change! Together, we are changing the conversation around behavioral health by reducing stigma, expanding prevention, increasing awareness, and investing in life-changing programs. Through strong partnerships across our community, we are creating safe, trusted spaces where people feel seen, supported, and empowered to seek help, paving the way for healthier individuals, stronger families, and more resilient communities. Every initiative we lead is grounded in evidence, informed by community input, and driven by the unequivocal belief that prevention works. Our education prevention has reached 70,000+ clients and 12,500+ families. And as a direct result, Broward County continues to experience a year-over-year decline in overdose deaths, reflecting the positive impact of coordinated prevention efforts, community partnerships, education, and public awareness.
What are some of the key programs that the community can get involved with? The Coalition has coordinated more than 80 community engagement activities. A few of them include: • South Florida Behavioral Health Conference • Broward Youth Coalition • Youth Leadership Institute • Rise Above Stigma Symposiums • United For Seniors (download the app at UnitedForSeniors.org) You can also visit the Prevention Resource Center on our website or join one of our Action Teams. How can someone call for support or get involved? We invite you to join us in our journey to reduce the stigma, normalize conversations around mental health, and connect individuals to the various community resources available either through United Way Broward or our partner agencies. THE AUGUST ADVANTAGE:
HOW TO DO BUSINESS WHEN EVERYONE ELSE IS AWOL
JULIE TALENFELD
President of BoardroomPR
There’s a particular stillness that settles over Florida in August. The office parking lots feel emptier. Email responses slow to a trickle. Your “quick call” requests are met with outof-office replies from Aspen, Sicily, or somewhere blissfully off the grid. August marks the official dog days of summer, and for many, a time to mentally and physically check out of work mode. But here’s my secret: August might just be the most underrated month to get ahead.
a mid-point review: What’s working? What isn’t? And what have you been too busy to fix? It’s also a prime time to strengthen relationships. With fewer distractions, conversations tend to be more genuine. A coffee meeting becomes less about squeezing something in and more about actually showing up. People feel the difference! And while others pause, those who stay engaged often find themselves a step ahead come September. Of course, this isn’t a call to skip your
While much of the business world is on vacation, I’d argue that August offers a rare and valuable window: the noise quiets, the pace softens, and the pressure to perform gives way to an opportunity to work more thoughtfully. Frankly it’s too hot to hustle. But it’s the perfect time to work with intention. August offers us all a professional reset. Without the constant churn of events, meetings, and obligations, there’s space to focus on the work that often gets pushed aside the rest of the year: strategy, planning, and meaningful connection. Even just cleaning out your Downloads folder on your computer is the perfect August task. This is the month to revisit your goals you may have set in January. It offers
own vacation or ignore the need to recharge. Rest is essential, and a part of this reset! But August doesn’t have to be a complete, month-long pause or an excuse to twiddle your thumbs. It can be something more nuanced, perhaps a hybrid of reflection and momentum. Think of it as the business world’s version of a deep, belly breath. So instead of writing August off as a lost month, consider giving it a reframe. Lean into the slower pace; use it! Reach out when others aren’t. Plan when others postpone. And please, clean up your desk and desktop. Because when everyone returns from their travels sun-kissed, recharged, and ready to go, you won’t be starting from scratch. You’ll already be ahead.

Final Flowers Are Given a Second Chance to Brighten Someone’s Day BY
L A I N E
D O S S
That's the mission behind Flower Power, a Parkland-based nonprofit that rescues surplus flowers and delivers them to seniors, hospital patients and others who could use a reminder that someone cares. In just over a year, the organization has rescued and redistributed more than 5,000 bouquets throughout North Broward and South Palm Beach counties. The idea began after founder Shayna Schon moved to South Florida from California with her husband, Gideon, and their children. As friends faced cancer, surgery, and the loss of a baby, she found herself bringing flowers to offer comfort. "I realized flowers always make people smile," she says. "They don't take away the pain, but they remind people that someone is thinking about them." Inspired by her previous work rescuing surplus food for nonprofits, Schon wondered if flowers could have a second life, too. She began contacting florists and grocery stores, eventually partnering with Trader Joe's in Coral Springs and other local businesses that now donate dozens of bouquets each week. The work is a family affair with even the kids helping to refresh the flowers before delivering them to senior living communities, memory care centers, rehabilitation facilities, and hospitals. Says Schon, “The residents really appreciate when the kids come around with the deliveries.” Flower Power has also expanded to offer floral arranging workshops for schools, businesses, and community groups, with participants creating one arrangement to keep and another to give away. As the nonprofit continues to grow, Shayna hopes to recruit more volunteers and rescue even more flowers. As a bootstrap 501(c)3, she also welcomes donations of florist supplies, ribbons, and vases. "Every bouquet carries more than flowers," she says. "It carries hope, compassion and the reminder that someone cares." More than 5,000 bouquets later, Flower Power proves that even a small kindness can make a significant impact on someone’s day. To get involved, visit flowerpowercommunity. org.
