A Doggone Good Read

As the proud mom of two rescue dogs, my life is filled with love, companionship, and laughs. In short, Luna, my 10-yearold Frenchie, and Dora, my 18-year-old Chihuahua, make my house a home.

If you’re lucky enough to share a home with dogs, you know these furry members of our family are meant to be treasured, cared for, and pampered. For that reason, our July issue celebrates the dog.

Inside these pages, you’ll find stories that highlight the remarkable bond between humans and canines. We’ll spotlight some of South Florida’s most prominent pups – and their humans.

We talk to people who have devoted their lives to rescuing dogs and learn about the impact adoption can have on both animals and the people who welcome them into their homes.

Of course, no dog issue would be complete without a little fun, so we’ve rounded up gift ideas that both pets and their people will appreciate. And because we live in one of the most dogfriendly regions in the country, we’ve also put together a guide to some of the best places to take your fur baby, whether you’re looking for a pet-friendly patio or a weekend adventure.

At a time when the world often feels increasingly superficial and disconnected, dogs continue to teach us something important about loyalty and presence. They don’t care about the car you drive – as long as they can go for a ride in it!

Capturing the Unspoken Bond

JACKIE DUCCI'S NEW DOCUMENTARY EXPLORES THE POWERFUL CONNECTIONS BETWEEN PEOPLE AND ANIMALS BY

or Jackie Ducci, the inspiration for a documentary began with a simple truth: some of life's most profound relationships happen without words.

As founder of the Human-Animal Alliance, Ducci has spent years witnessing the powerful connections between people and animals. "There are stories everywhere of people whose lives have been changed because of a connection with an animal, but we don't talk about it enough." Ducci decided to share some of these stories with a larger audience.

The result is Unspoken Bond, a documentary that premiered in Wellington in March 2026. Created by Ducci and filmmaker Don Hardy, the film explores the emotional and often transformative relationships between humans and animals through three compelling stories.

The first follows Jason Gaver, a U.S. military veteran struggling with severe trauma and PTSD after returning home from service. At one point, he walked into a Veterans Affairs office and admitted he was considering harming himself or others. Through a service dog organization, he was paired with Woodrow, a dog that helped him reconnect with his daughter, his community, and ultimately himself.

"He's a big, masculine guy, but when he talks about his dog, it's incredibly moving," Ducci says. "That dog gave him a life again."

Another segment focuses on Shannon Dueck, a top dressage rider who lost her beloved Angel, the horse she raised from birth. After an accident following Angel’s return from Europe, Dueck slowly healed, thanks, in part, to the healing power of the other horses in her life.

"It's a story that shows how deep that bond can grow," says Ducci.

"Anyone who has lost an animal understands that level of grief."

The film's third story introduces viewers to Nicole Navarro, a Key Largo woman who runs Pawsitive Beginnings. After overcoming 18 years of

addiction, Nicole recognized the urgent need for a sanctuary for these animals while volunteering at the Monroe County Sheriff ’s Office Animal Farm in Key West.

At the sanctuary she created, foxes rescued from the fur trade now assist trauma survivors in their healing journeys.

“The foxes remain wild animals”, Ducci says, “but the connections they create are remarkable”.

Throughout the documentary, personal stories are complemented by expert commentary from veterinarians and specialists in the growing field of human-animal connection research, grounding the film's emotional narratives in science.

Ducci serves as creator and executive producer, overseeing casting and helping shape the project's vision from concept to screen. The title reflects the central theme.

"There's no spoken language between animals and us," she says. "But they’re some of the closest connections we can feel. It’s so deep that it transcends words.”

Following its successful premiere, Unspoken Bond is embarking on a screening tour, with upcoming showings planned in Key West, Key Largo, and Fort Lauderdale. Ducci hopes the momentum will eventually lead to a streaming deal with a major platform.

More than anything, she hopes the film reminds audiences of the importance of empathy in an increasingly disconnected world.

or Susan Renneisen, vice president of community affairs and special events at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood, a life well lived includes having dogs at her side.

Renneisen first fell in love with poodles more than 40 years ago after moving to Las Vegas to further her career. Far from her home on the East Coast, she found herself looking for canine companionship.

Being allergic to dogs, Renneisen said a friend suggested she look into standard poodles, and she fell in love with the breed for their intelligence and beauty. Renneisen also realized that poodles – like Louboutins – work best in pairs. "I've had two dogs ever since," she says. "They're smart, joyous, and filled with love and affection."

Today, two rescued standard poodles, Leo and Walter, occupy a special place in her heart. The pair came into her life more than three years ago after she lost two beloved dogs and was devastated by the emptiness in her heart and her home.

A friend sent her an adoption listing from Standard Poodle Rescue for a bonded poodle pair. Walter was a healthy handsome six-year old.

His companion? A 10 year old senior named Leo. "I burst out crying," Renneisen recalls. "I said, 'I want someone to take me when I'm old and arthritic. Let's do it.'"

After completing the rescue organization's extensive screening process, Renneisen welcomed both dogs into their home. With proper nutrition, exercise, and plenty of love, Leo lost more than 25 pounds, no longer needed arthritis medication, and regained his youthful energy. "He's 13 now and healthy as a horse," she says. The experience reinforced her belief in pet adoption and the importance of giving older animals a second chance.

That passion extends to her work at Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood Hotel & Casino, where she has spent more than two decades helping

build community partnerships and philanthropic initiatives. Among them are pet adoption events held in partnership with local animal welfare organizations. The resort also donates linens, towels, and other supplies to shelters and hosts animal adoption days that allow employees to meet and adopt pets, with the Seminole Hard Rock covering adoption costs.

In addition, the hotel supports Big Dog Ranch Rescue in its efforts to save the lives of more than 72,000 dogs to date.

Her commitment to animal welfare deepened after another beloved poodle, Cowboy, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Following difficult conversations with her veterinarian, Renneisen made the heartbreaking decision to say goodbye. The experience inspired her to create The Cowboy Fund, a charitable program supported by Renneisen and a group of friends that helps pet owners who cannot afford lifesaving veterinary care at Gentle Care Animal Hospital in Fort Lauderdale.

For more than a decade, the fund has assisted hundreds of animals.

"When people can't afford treatment for their pets, it breaks your heart," she says. "If we can help save even one more animal, it's worth it."

While Renneisen's role frequently places her alongside celebrities, entertainers, and major events at the famed “Guitar Hotel”, she says the work she values most centers on helping others. "The Broward community comes together for philanthropy in a really special way," she says. "My life is very blessed. When you have the capacity to give, you should."

For Renneisen, whether she's helping a rescue dog find a forever home, supporting a family facing a difficult veterinary bill, or putting together a major fundraising event, giving back remains one of life's greatest rewards.

Labrador Matchmakers AT SUNSHINE STATE LABRADOR RESCUE IT’S AS MUCH ABOUT PEOPLE AS IT IS ABOUT DOGS BY

or more than three decades, the Labrador Retriever was officially America's most popular dog. Friendly, sweet, and majestic looking, Labs have always been considered the perfect family dog. But even the perfect dog may find themselves in need of a good home.

That's where Sunshine State Labrador Rescue comes in.

Founded in August 2025, the Florida-based nonprofit was created by a group of experienced rescue volunteers who saw a need for a Labrador-specific rescue organization. Unlike traditional shelters, Sunshine State Labrador Rescue has no actual facility, relying on a network of foster homes and volunteers located throughout the state – with concentrations in South Florida, Southwest Florida, and Central Florida.

"We saw a need to provide a strong Labrador rescue operation statewide," says Cindy Conway, the organization's president and one of its founding members.

The rescue takes in purebred Labradors and Labrador mixes from owner surrenders and animal shelters. Many of the dogs arrive at a difficult stage in their lives. According to Conway, Labrador puppies are adorable balls of floof, but by the time they reach adolescence, some owners discover they weren't prepared for the breed's energy and training needs.

"When they're puppies, they're cute," she says. "When they're a year or two old and haven't had the right training, they can be a handful."

As a result, Sunshine State Labrador Rescue receives more surrender requests than it can currently accommodate.

Once a dog enters the rescue, it is placed in a foster home where

volunteers learn its personality, habits and needs. The organization also ensures each dog receives veterinary care, vaccinations, and treatment for any medical conditions before becoming available for adoption.

"When you buy a puppy, you don't really know what you're going to get," Conway says. "With a foster dog, you have someone who can tell you if the dog is active, good with kids, or needs a quieter home."

Potential adopters complete an online application, undergo a home visit, and work with adoption counselors to find the right match. The goal, Conway says, is not simply to place dogs quickly, but to create successful long-term relationships between dogs and families by becoming canine-human matchmakers. Finding the perfect fit greatly increases the chances of a lifetime of love.

The organization also operates a “Forever Foster” program for dogs with significant medical or behavioral challenges that make traditional adoption difficult. Rather than risk those dogs being overlooked, Sunshine State Labrador Rescue places them in dedicated foster homes where they can live out their lives while the rescue continues to cover their care through donations.

Volunteers and fosters are the backbone of the operation. Volunteers handle adoption inquiries, transport dogs to other cities, and more.

Fosters provide a soft landing for dogs that may be anxious or sad after losing the only home they’ve ever known. In fact, Conway says foster homes remain the rescue's greatest asset – and need. "We can only save as many dogs as we have foster homes," she says, adding that the more people willing to foster a dog, the more dogs can have a chance at a forever home.

"It’s about dogs," Cindy says. "But it's also about people."

teenager at a South Florida hospital refused to participate in physical therapy.

Nurses and therapists tried everything they could think of, but the young patient remained withdrawn and uncooperative. Then Rosie, a bearded collie, quietly entered the room and settled beside the teen. Almost by instinct, the teen’s hand reached out and started stroking Rosie’s silken fur. Her handler gave the teen a brush. As he began brushing the collie’s lush coat, his mood softened. He smiled. After spending time with the dog, he did something the medical staff had been unable to convince him to do: He got up and accompanied Rosie down the hall.

"The nurses were amazed," says Monica Wesolowski, CEO of Canine Assisted Therapy, Inc. (C.A.T.). "He hadn't wanted to listen to the staff, but he was willing to walk with Rosie."

Stories like that are what drive the mission of C.A.T., one of South Florida's largest pet therapy organizations. Founded in 2009 by two volunteers and their dogs visiting nursing homes, the nonprofit has grown into a network of approximately 150 therapy dog-and-person teams serving hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centers, addiction recovery programs, and hospice centers throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties.

While most people have experienced the calming effects of petting a dog, there’s actual documented science behind pet therapy.

UCLA Health notes that interacting with dogs can lower heart rate and stress levels while increasing Phenylethylamine, which has the same effect as eating chocolate. "It actually changes the chemistry in your body," Wesolowski says. "It helps you breathe. It helps you calm down."

That calming effect is often most visible during life's most difficult moments. C.A.T.'s specially trained teams regularly visit hospitals, hospice centers, and trauma settings where patients and families are facing illness, grief, and uncertainty.

During the trial of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooter, therapy dogs were stationed in a calm room for family members, attorneys, and others emotionally affected by the proceedings. "There

could not have been a more stressful time," Wesolowski says. "The dogs know. They feel the emotion."

The organization is also a favored therapy dog provider for Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, where multiple C.A.T. teams visit regularly.

Wesolowski experienced their impact personally when her grandson spent several days in the hospital. "Two of our therapy teams happened to come by," she says. "They had no idea he was my grandson. It brought joy to my heart knowing they were there for him.”

Not every dog is suited for therapy work. Prospective therapy dogs must be at least one year old and have already earned their AKC Canine Good Citizen certification. They then undergo extensive temperament evaluations to ensure they are comfortable around strangers, medical equipment, crowds, and other dogs. The dogs are also evaluated on how much they like the tasks at hand. "We protect the dogs as much as we protect the people," Wesolowski says. "They have to enjoy the work."

Today, demand for therapy dog visits continues to outpace the organization's capacity. Although C.A.T. has grown from two therapy dogs to 150 volunteer teams, there are still more requests than it can fulfill. "We're always looking for special people with very special dogs," Wesolowski says.

For those who have witnessed the power of a therapy dog visit, the appeal is easy to understand.

"They don't ask questions. They don't judge," she says. "They just lean into you and give you comfort.”

Detecting the Invisible: A Lifesaving Aortic Repair John Petri never imagined that a regular workout would change his life. While exercising at the gym, he suddenly felt something he had never experienced before – a burning sensation spreading across his entire chest.

“It was a feeling that came over my chest,” John recalls. “It was throughout my entire chest, and it was something I’d never felt before.”

Concerned, John sought care at Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital, where advanced testing revealed a serious and potentially fatal diagnosis: a major tear in his aorta, the main blood vessel carrying blood from the heart to the rest of the body.

“I told them I had never had a heart condition before,” John says.

“When we looked at the totality of the situation, we knew that with a leaking valve, a very enlarging aorta and a chronic dissection, John was a ticking time bomb,” says cardiothoracic surgeon Antonio Polanco, MD. Surgery was the only option. John ultimately underwent a surgical aortic graft repair, a complex and highly specialized procedure designed not only to improve his quality of life, but to save it.

“They told me it was a serious operation,” John says. “I’d be under for quite some time on a heart-lung machine.”

Because John’s dissection involved the arch of the aorta, where the arteries supplying blood to the brain originate, the procedure required extraordinary planning and teamwork.

During the surgery, doctors needed to temporarily drain blood from John’s body while still ensuring continuous oxygen rich blood flow to his brain.

John is grateful for the collaborative care he received at Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital.

According to cardiologist Malcolm McDonald, MD, sudden tears in the aorta – known as aortic dissections – can occur without warning. “The aorta is the single largest and highest pressure vessel in the body,” Dr. McDonald explains. “A sudden tear can very easily be a fatal event. From people practicing sunrise yoga to dogs having leisurely get-togethers, the recently reopened Huizenga Park has quickly become one of Fort Lauderdale’s busiest communal

backyards.

Named after the renowned South Florida entrepreneur and philanthropist Wayne Huizenga, the park was originally built in the late 90s with the intention of being a fun space to entice downtown employees to stay and enjoy activities such as barbecue fests and 5k runs.

such as Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, the Community Foundation of Broward, and the Cleveland Clinic. The civic hub is 3.6 acres and currently offers over 100 initiatives that are free and available to everyone.

“This project of the DDA is really special to my team as a whole and me because it really showcases in real life the impact you can make to a city through investment in the parks and public space,” said the President and CEO of Fort Lauderdale Downtown Development Authority (DDA), Jenni Morejon. “It’s always our intention to make it a place you could go to every single day, and you would have a new experience.”

According to Morejon, the park offers almost 160 unique programs. These include a biweekly community market, trivia night, and poetry under the stars. The standout is the park’s signature movie night series which features livingroom-style seating, themed experiences, and a curated selection of activities. For example, a pet costume contest coincided with a screening of The Secret Life of Pets.

Many of Huizenga’s programs are dog friendly. The park is home to The Dog Spot, Downtown Fort Lauderdale’s only dedicated space for dogs along Las Olas Boulevard, offering a welcoming, thoughtfully designed area where pets and their owners can gather, play, and connect. Guests are encouraged to bring their four-legged friends to the park’s happenings, provided they always remain leashed outside of The Dog Spot. Recently, the park launched dog-themed fitness classes timed around its weekly Yappy Hours, creating a fun, social way for pet owners to stay active alongside their dogs while strengthening the sense of community that defines Huizenga Park.

“There are some people who bring their dog religiously every single morning, and maybe they have that same experience every day, but they’re always going to see different people in the park,” said Morejon.

The park's culinary lineup expands this fall with Sweetwaters, a full-service restaurant managed by the team behind Miami’s iconic Rusty Pelican. This addition will elevate the destination's status as Downtown Fort Lauderdale’s signature park, creating a vibrant waterfront hub where visitors can gather, dine, and unwind along the New River.

For guests driving into downtown, public parking is available just a short walk from Huizenga Park at locations such as Riverwalk Center Garage and on-street parking on SE First Avenue. Visitors can also arrive by Water Trolley.

Huizenga Park is located at Stop #2. Huizenga Park is also a ten-minute walk from Brightline's Fort Lauderdale station.

Huizenga Park is managed by an independent board of commercial property owners, operating separately from city or county control. Transforming Huizenga Park taught Morejon and her team that sustaining such spaces requires a mix of public, private, and philanthropic funding.

According to her, donors have, to date, contributed a total of eight million dollars towards sustaining programs.

“Investments in parks are invaluable,” said Morejon.

“They’re forever if done right. This is a public space that will be here for generations to come. And when you give community members a memorable experience, it instills pride in the community and a sense of togetherness that’s needed probably now more than ever.”

n an overcast afternoon at Tri-County Animal Rescue in Boca Raton, three beagles cautiously step into a fenced dog park. The morning rain has given way to a patch of sunlight, and a rainbow is beginning to emerge from the clouds.

At first, the dogs stay close together, sniffing the perimeter and cautiously investigating their surroundings. They hesitate at the feel of grass beneath their paws. Every sound seems to catch their attention.

A tossed tennis ball prompts a startled glance.

Slowly, curiosity wins out.

Within minutes, the trio is exploring the yard, sniffing plants, chasing one another, and discovering a world that, until recently, they had never known.

For these beagles, every experience is new.

They are among the 1,500 beagles recently released from Ridglan Farms, a controversial breeding and research facility in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin. For decades, Ridglan bred beagles to sell to testing laboratories, with animal welfare advocates campaigning for the dogs' release.

This spring, a breakthrough came when South Florida-based Big Dog Ranch Rescue partnered with the Center for a Humane Economy to negotiate an agreement securing the release of the dogs. The organizations worked together to purchase the animals and coordinate what became one of the largest canine rescue operations in recent U.S. history. Immediately, rescue groups across the country volunteered to take in the dogs.

According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, all remaining beagles at the facility are in the process of being freed.

Tri-County Animal Rescue was among those that answered the call, taking in 15 of the beagles.

"We've never turned down a rescue," says cofounder and president, Suzi Goldsmith.

For Goldsmith, helping animals in need has been a lifelong mission. Long before the Ridglan beagles arrived in Boca Raton, Tri-County was responding to disasters and large-scale rescue efforts around the world.

One of the organization's earliest major efforts came after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005. Goldsmith remembers immediately organizing a trip to Louisiana with a small team and a van funded through a donation from philanthropist Lois Pope.

"We went right away," Goldsmith recalled. "We gathered food and supplies, and brought dogs back with us." The team traveled to the region

multiple times, rescuing more than 100 displaced animals from overwhelmed shelters. Many had been abandoned in the chaos following the storm.

Since then, Tri-County has expanded its reach far beyond South Florida.

The organization has participated in rescue efforts following floods in Mississippi and Oklahoma, helped save street dogs in Turkey, and works with rescue partners in China and Puerto Rico. Just weeks ago, Tri-County stepped in to take in more than 50 Chihuahuas that were part of a severe hoarding situation in Tennessee, where authorities seized 140 tiny dogs. Many of the Chihuahuas are now available for adoption, while others are still receiving much-needed care.

"People call us, and we go," Goldsmith said.

That philosophy has helped make Tri-County one of the region's most recognized animal welfare organizations.

Since its founding, the nonprofit has rescued more than 101,000 animals, with dogs accounting for the majority of intakes.

That commitment extends to the shelter's veterinary hospital, which performs nearly every type of surgery on-site. Goldsmith points to

animals such as Chocolate Chip, a tiny toy poodle whose jaw was shattered and required extensive treatment, as examples of the lengths Tri-County will go to save a life. "We're not statistics here," she said.

"Every animal matters."

The newly arrived beagles present a different challenge.

All the dogs required spay and neuter surgeries and medical checks. For the volunteers and staff, documenting the tattoo numbers inside their ears was an emotional reminder that these dogs would never have had a soft bed, a gentle touch, or even a proper name without their efforts.

Despite their difficult pasts, the beagles are making remarkable progress. As the sun breaks through the clouds, they explore their newfound freedom. For the first time in their lives, they are experiencing the simple joys of being a dog—and thanks to the efforts of rescue organizations across the country, they now have the chance to spend the rest of their lives doing exactly that.

For Goldsmith, moments like these are why she continues doing the work after decades in animal rescue.

"Dogs make my heart sing," she says.

Paws With Purpose

or many children, a hospital stay can bring uncertainty, fear, and long days away from the comforts of home. At Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, however, some of the most beloved members of the care team walk on four legs.

Freedom, Goldie, and the hospital’s newest facility dog, Dominos, are the stars of the hospital’s animal-assisted therapy program, bringing comfort, companionship, and motivation to patients throughout the facility. Affectionately known as “the boys,” the specially trained golden retrievers visibly do much more than brighten hallways. They help children through procedures, encourage participation in therapy, reduce anxiety, and provide emotional support for patients, families, and even hospital staff.

“These dogs are equipped to cover the needs of all of our patients,” says Carmen Cowart, a certified child life specialist and coordinator of the facility dog program. “They can help during procedures, motivate patients during rehabilitation, and create an environment that helps children heal.”

The program has been a part of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital since 2009, beginning with its first facility dog, Nutmeg. Today, the impact extends throughout the hospital. More than 200 direct patient interactions are documented each month, though the true reach is far greater. The dogs make rounds across units, attend hospital events, visit families and siblings, and provide support to staff members following difficult days.

Research surrounding animal-assisted therapy continues to grow, with studies showing decreases in stress, anxiety, and even perceived pain when therapy dogs are involved. Cowart says the results are visible every day.

“When patients have a dog there, they state that they feel less pain than before the dog was there to visit,” she explains. “We can see the difference in how they engage and cope.”

That difference can be especially powerful for children facing lengthy treatments. Some patients develop deep bonds with specific dogs over the course of months or even years.

“One of our patients was in treatment for about seven years,” says Shannon Bajwa, director of Child Life and Creative Arts. “Every time she came, the dog was there with her. You’re living your life here, and every day

you’re getting that dog’s attention, love, support, and motivation.”

Those connections often become unforgettable.

Cowart recalls attending the funeral of a longtime patient whose relationship with one of the facility dogs had become widely known among family and friends.

“Everybody said, ‘This is her dog,’” Cowart remembers. “They all knew the dog because every single time she came for treatment, that dog was by her side.”

The dogs also inspire children to accomplish goals that might otherwise feel impossible. Patients recovering from surgery or injury often hesitate to get out of bed. Introduce a dog into the equation, and attitudes can change quickly.

“They find out they can walk the dog through the halls and suddenly they want to walk three times a day,” Bajwa says. “That motivation helps them recover and get home sooner.”

All three dogs receive extensive training through Educated Canines Assisting with Disabilities (ECAD), a Connecticut-based organization. By the time they arrive at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital at age two, they have mastered roughly 80 commands and are prepared to work alongside healthcare professionals in a variety of clinical settings.

Supporting the program is a dedicated team of 16 trained handlers representing multiple disciplines throughout the hospital.

For families navigating difficult medical journeys, the presence of a wagging tail, a gentle nuzzle, or a familiar furry face can provide comfort when it is needed most.

“They’re always available,” Cowart says. “They’re constantly having that impact with patients who come through our doors.”

“It’s an absolute common term,” says Jennifer Guttenberg, a real estate agent and broker with Weichert, Realtors-Unlimited in North Carolina. “A lot of people up north come down to Florida, but then they want to get out of the heat without going back to the severity of Northeast winters. So, they go halfway back.”

The trend aligns with broader migration data. According to the Tax Foundation, North Carolina ranked among the nation’s top destinations for inbound migration in recent years, while South Carolina also continued to see strong population growth fueled by domestic movers. Florida remains a migration

For decades, the migration pattern was simple: Northeasterners headed south to Florida for sunshine, tax advantages, and a warmer lifestyle. But increasingly, another chapter is unfolding after that first relocation — one known in real estate circles as the “halfback” move.

The term refers to buyers who relocate to Florida, only to eventually move “halfway back” toward their original home region, often landing in North Carolina, South Carolina, or

powerhouse, but the Carolinas have increasingly become landing spots for buyers seeking a second chapter.

For South Floridians, Western North Carolina has emerged as a particularly attractive option. Guttenberg, who splits time between Florida and the Asheville area, says many of her buyers are drawn by the ability to maintain easy access to South Florida while gaining a dramatically different lifestyle.

“The Asheville regional airport has direct flights to and from Fort Lauderdale every day,” she says. “That convenience matters a lot to buyers.” The Asheville region — including communities like Hendersonville, Black Mountain, Maggie Valley, Weaverville, and Waynesville — has become especially popular with Florida buyers looking for seasonal living, second homes, or retirement destinations.

Part of the appeal comes down to variety. Asheville itself offers a thriving arts and restaurant scene, while surrounding towns deliver quieter settings with walkable downtowns, wineries, breweries, and mountain views. “There’s a very foodie-driven

culture in Asheville,” Guttenberg says. “Then you have these smaller surrounding towns with charming Main Streets, festivals, apple orchards, and mountain scenery.”

Climate also plays a major role.

Summers are milder, humidity is lower, and seasonal changes — particularly fall foliage — provide a contrast many longtime Floridians miss.

Beyond lifestyle considerations, buyers are also evaluating the investment potential. In many mountain communities, second homes can double as income-producing vacation rentals when owners are not using them.

“People love log cabins and rustic mountain homes,” Guttenberg says. “A lot of buyers look at properties where they can enjoy the home themselves but also rent it out and let it help pay for itself.”

While home prices across the Carolinas have climbed in recent years, many buyers still view the region as comparatively attainable versus portions of South Florida’s luxury market.

“You can still get more for your money in many cases,” Guttenberg says. “There are luxury homes in the millions, but there are also cozy homes at much lower price points in beautiful areas.”

The timing may also favor buyers willing to act now. After the frenzy of the pandemic-era housing market, Guttenberg says parts of Western North Carolina are shifting toward more balanced conditions.

“During COVID, people were fighting over homes because rates were so low,” she says. “Now it’s becoming more of a buyer’s market again up here.”

For many buyers, the appeal ultimately comes down to flexibility. Some want a peaceful retreat that complements a South Florida primary residence. Others are planning long-term retirement strategies or family investments they can pass down for generations.

“There’s such a wide range of options,” Guttenberg says. “Whether someone wants a cozy cabin or a luxury mountain estate, they can find something that fits their lifestyle while still staying connected to Florida.”

We have four - Frasier (12), Augie (9), Poppy (6) and Dash (4 months.). All are Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and all are rescues.

How did your dogs come into your life, and how has your relationship grown over time?

Frasier was an owner surrender, and we rescued him at age 11 months. Augie, Poppy, and Dash are rescues from Cavalier Rescue of Florida (CRF). Dash is our newest family member.

His mom was found wandering the streets in North Florida and was picked up and placed in a shelter where they discovered she was pregnant. She gave birth shortly thereafter to 9 puppies, of which only 3 survived. CRF took mom and babies and contacted previous adopters to foster to adopt a puppy, and we said “What

the hell? What’s one more!” and now we have four. Poppy was the most traumatized and watching her grow from a scared and beaten down dog into the happy girl she is today, running and playing without fear, is the greatest joy.

What is your favorite pet charity or rescue organization and why?

Cavalier Rescue of Florida, a group of dedicated volunteers who rescue every Cavalier needing a home, from owner surrenders to puppy mill dogs. They vet every application thoroughly to ensure the dog is placed in the right home. They also provide whatever vet care is needed as the dog is fostered before being ready for adoption. Having worked with them with 3 of our 4 rescues, we know how much these dogs mean to the people at CRF and because of that, we know every dog finds that loving home they all deserve.

What has been the greatest blessing your dog has brought to your life?

The dogs bring us joy and unconditional love. Knowing they are now in a loving and secure home and watching them thrive as a result is the greatest blessing of all.

Ralphie is my four-year-old English Bulldog.

Bulldogs are notorious for being couch potatoes, but Ralphie missed that memo entirely. He’s energetic, endlessly curious, and has a personality – and presence – that is larger than life. I often joke that he takes up a lot of space in the Universe!

He’s demanding, mischievous, and always keeping things interesting. Life with Ralphie is never dull, and that’s exactly what makes him so special.

Share a memorable or funny moment involving your dog that you’ll never forget.

One of my favorite Ralphie stories involves our pool. Bulldogs aren’t known for their swimming abilities, but Ralphie loves the water. One day, while splashing around on our sun shelf (his favorite place to hang out), he suddenly dunked his entire head underwater. I panicked! Imagine my surprise when he calmly blew bubbles through his nose and opened his eyes as if he were on some kind of underwater expedition. Since then, putting his head underwater and “exploring” has become one of his signature activities. It’s so unexpected, and hilarious – and so completely Ralphie.

What has been the greatest blessing your dog has brought to your life?

Laughter. Ralphie has an uncanny ability to deliver a pick-me-up whenever I need one, with perfect comedic timing. He’s a clown, but also remarkably sweet and intuitive. I believe that animals make us better people, and Ralphie has certainly done that for me. He constantly reminds me to enjoy the moment and not take life too seriously. In Ralphie’s world, adventures exist around every corner, and every day offers an opportunity to have fun. I’m grateful for the joy he brings, and the continuous inspiration to embrace life with a little more lightheartedness.

Gizmo is a Shih Tzu Toy Poodle with a personality all his own. He’s honestly more human than dog sometimes. What started as bringing him to the office every now and then turned into Gizmo becoming our official Chief Happiness Officer at WheelHouse IT. He’s become part of the culture, and at this point, people expect to see him wandering the office making rounds.

How do you juggle work life with your dog?

Gizmo comes to the office just about every day, and on the days he’s not there, people genuinely ask where he is. He makes appearances in virtual meetings, job interviews, client discussions, and conference room strategy sessions. In the managed IT world, things can get stressful fast, and Gizmo has a way of immediately lightening the mood without trying.

What’s your dog’s quirkiest habit or personality trait?

Gizmo stands at attention like a prairie dog whenever he’s curious about something happening around him. He’s also mastered what we call “quiet barking.” He never really yells or loses his mind, but somehow still makes it very clear when he wants something. He’s polite about it, but persistent enough that eventually everyone gives in.

What has been the greatest blessing your dog has brought to your life?

Gizmo unintentionally became part of our company culture. WheelHouse IT works in highpressure environments involving cybersecurity, outages, compliance, and business continuity.

Gizmo brings personality and calm into situations that are usually very serious. Clients ask about him by name. Prospects remember him after meetings.

Internally, he reminds our team that no matter how technical the industry becomes, business is still built on human connection.

She reads the room, sits in front of you, and rests her head beside you when you need comfort. The runt of her litter grew into the queen of the throne, and the whole team treats her like royalty.

What’s your dog’s quirkiest habit or personality trait?

Two things stand out. Barking is not her style, and silence suits her better. She also wants nothing to do with pools or water. Bone

dry and happy, every single day of the year.

How do you juggle your work or personal life with your dog?

Easy. She comes to work with me every morning. If I am out of the office, there is always someone willing to pick her up and drop her off. She even has a PTO calendar. What’s ironic is that Oscar, my brother and partner, is not a dog person, or so he claimed for years. Sunshine changed his mind. The moment she hears his voice she turns into a puppy again and runs straight to him.

People across the office offer to pet sit or take her home for the weekend. We keep her right where she belongs, spreading calm and love between meetings, deadlines, and long days.

What has been the greatest blessing your dog has brought to your life?

Happiness. True to her name, Sunshine fills our days with joy and reminds us why we show up. Ten years in, she remains the heart of my family’s home and our office. Everyone she meets falls a little in love with her. She earns her keep as everyone has wonderful healthy snacks for her.

We went to buy a Christmas tree with the kids - our annual tradition - and the manager of the tree location mentioned her dogs had just had babies. My daughter, who has a Yorkie, asked to see the dogs. There were two - a boy and a girl. Frankie snuggled right into my neck and I fell in love. We have never had a dog before and I thought it would be good for Patrick (really it was me who wanted him!). Mike was resistant, sharing we had enough on our plates, but now he and Frankie adore each other.

What has been the greatest blessing your dog has brought to your life?

Frankie is such a calming factor in our home. He is warm and cuddly and so affectionate. He just makes us feel so loved! We love spoiling him, because he deserves it.

She was only about three months old then, and let’s just say she’s been my little shadow ever since. She’s got a scar from her past, but she’s all heart. Now, we’re inseparable—she rides with me, keeps me company, and reminds me every day that I got lucky when I found her.

One Sunday, we’re having breakfast on a café patio, and this rough-looking guy rolls up on a bike. He asks for money, then wants to pet Coco.

I tell him, “Nah, she bites.” (She doesn’t.) But this guy doesn’t believe it. As soon as he steps closer, Coco gets up, does this badass mohawk thing on her back, shows teeth, and gives a low growl. Let’s just say—problem solved. I was impressed. She’s sweet—but she’s got my back.

What has been the greatest blessing your dog has brought to your life?

Coco’s been a daily reminder that sometimes, the best things happen when you least expect them.

She’s brought joy, loyalty, and a reminder that even on a stressful day of moves, there’s something more important waiting for me at home. She’s not just a dog—she’s my little partner in crime.

What are their quirks and personality traits?

Today, Leo and Walter are thriving. Through proper nutrition, exercise, and endless love, Leo lost the excess weight and no longer requires any medication. Both dogs are energetic, affectionate, and full of personality. Each has chosen a favorite human. Leo wakes up early with Bill and spends his days faithfully by his side while he works. Walter is my shadow, staying up late with me and refusing to get out of bed until I do. He loves patrolling the backyard, chasing away ducks, squirrels, birds, and anything else that dares enter his territory. Leo usually watches the commotion, shakes his head, and heads back into the airconditioned house. They have truly become the center of our world.

King Leo is a 13-year-old apricot Standard Poodle, and Sir Walter is an 8-year-old parti Standard Poodle. Although they aren’t related, they are a deeply bonded pair. Three years ago, they were living with a woman who became ill and had to move into elder care. We received a plea asking if we would consider adopting them. The rescue description was heartbreaking: Leo was 10 years old, overweight, arthritic, on multiple medications, and could not be separated from Walter. I burst into tears and told Bill we had to take them. My thinking was simple—if Leo

Scout opens doors. Unlocks them, and opens them. He’s never met a door he can’t open, except for the refirgerator.

Luna is a 4-year-old miniature schnauzer who was named after the two full moons in October 2020 that was an unusual happening. A harvest moon was the first and a blue moon on Halloween was the second. Super rare for that to happen so the name seemed fitting. Maybe that is why Luna is so mischievous!

How did your dog become part of your family?

Luna came into our life at six weeks old as a companion for my mother after my father had passed. We quickly realized that her puppy energy needed to be managed so I adopted her. Mom lives close so she visits her grand puppy whenever she needs a good dose of Luna love!

What does a day in the life of Luna look like?

She may be small at 22 pounds, but she is fierce. She is a protector of our home and of our family. She will hunt down iguanas and force them into the waterway. She is Gary’s nap time buddy and quite a talker when she sees something of interest. She loves the wind in her face while riding the waves on boat outings. She has become our NauticStar mascot.

What’s Luna’s gift to you?

Luna is a blessing to our family. We pour so much love into her and she gives it all back tenfold. She will make herself known to all that visit. She will glance in your eyes with her one-of-akind very long eyelashes that skirt her beautiful, big brown eyes.

We currently share our home with three Labradors: Bella, Sadie, and Choco. Bella and Choco came to us through Sunshine State Labrador Retriever Rescue. We have been a foster home for the rescue for more than 25 years and have fostered well over 100 dogs. Only three were “foster fails” and never made it out of our home. Our Labs are perpetually happy and wake up every morning excited for whatever adventures the day may bring, especially if it involves a tennis ball!

Has your dog ever helped you through a tough time or big life change?

John’s mother, “Mama Rita,” lived with us during the last several years of her life. From the day she moved in, she spoiled

our dogs—and every foster dog—as only an Italian grandmother could. She was famous for her Sunday sauce and countless Christmas cookies, and the Labs were always eager taste-testers.

As she became more frail, the dogs seemed to instinctively understand. They were incredibly gentle, patient, and protective of her. She especially loved joining us and the dogs for walks along Fort Lauderdale’s Riverwalk. When it was time to bring hospice into our home, the dogs never left her side. They stayed close to her day and night and remained by her bedside until she passed away. Their loyalty, comfort, and quiet companionship during that time meant more to our family than words can express.

What is your favorite pet charity or rescue organization and why?

Without question, Sunshine State Labrador Retriever Rescue.

The organization has given countless Labs a second chance at life, but rescues can only save as many dogs as they have foster homes for. Fostering is one of the most rewarding experiences we’ve ever had. Max, my youngest son, Jack, and I went on a trip to Chicago.

On the flight to Chicago, Max got out of his carrier. Max was running around the plane, under everyone’s seats. Max knocked over Jack’s meal. The food went everywhere. Huge mess! Then, while on walks in Chicago, Max didn’t get the memo to not go number two in the middle of busy, traffic-filled streets. Max saw his first snowfall on that trip. He looked adorable in his black puffer winter jacket. Max has also been to Washington, DC. He loves to travel! We love bringing Max on trips. You see another side of a city, when you bring your pet.

Max has no clue that he’s an eight-pound Maltipoo and only 10 inches tall. He walks around the neighborhood like he owns the streets of Rio Vista. Max barks at the neighbors’ Belgian Malinois, Mastiff ’s, Boxers, and the other huge, gigantic dogs. Max is my tiny protector!

What is your favorite pet charity or rescue organization and why?

Almost every Tuesday, I host an American Heart Association’s Go Red meeting at my house. Max loves to be a part of our committee. The AHA Team that comes over on Tuesdays have demanding, serious, intense jobs. Max helps us stay happy and focused while we are solving problems, raising awareness, finding funding and making partnerships. He crawls all over everyone, begs for belly rubs, and loves on the AHA Team. Max helps just by being present. Pets are magic!

Dora is a Chihuahua who was rescued from TriCounty Animal Rescue – a woman was hoarding 70 Chihuahuas in a warehouse facility, and Dora was one of them. When I adopted her she was young, but so weak that I couldn’t take her home for weeks while the shelter worked on making her strong enough to go home. Today, she’s a feisty old lady who just celebrated her 18th birthday! Luna is a 10-year-old Frenchie that was rescued from a breeder. Luna came to me when I was extremely sad after losing two of my dogs – Mimi and Moo. Luna was broken, as well. Together, we learned to move forward.

How do you juggle work life with your dogs?

Most of the time, I write in my home office.

There are dog beds scattered all around my apartment. Luna’s snoring is my office “musak” and the soundtrack to my day.

What’s your dogs’ quirkiest habits or personality traits?

Dora is your typical Chihuahua – spicy, whip smart, and independent. She’s not a socializer and just prefers to stay home, waiting for breakfast and dinner. Luna, on the other hand, is jealous and clingy. She has to be near me all the time. She loves to go out on the town and meet people. And – like her mom – she loves a good, hoppy IPA, or a night on the town at La Fuga in Fort Lauderdale.

Luna also has a wig and hat collection. We made a pact when I adopted her – I’ll give her the best life ever – but she has to wear incredibly ridiculous outfits for Instagram. So far, we’ve both kept to the agreement.

What has been the greatest blessing your dogs have brought to your life?

Laughter, companionship, family, love. What haven’t my girls given me? They’re everything to me. They make my tiny condo a home.

Don’t let AI trick you into thinking it’s “smarter” or “better” than you, because by just being you, in and of itself, you have something unique and worthwhile to contribute. Your lived experience, your point of view, your understanding of your audience, your sense of humor, your YOU-ness: that’s the secret sauce no algorithm can replicate. What a shame if we lost it. If we lost YOU! The most successful publicists,

to replace each of our unique voices— editorially and literally.

In my industry of public relations, storytelling is everything. AI can be an incredible assistant for first drafts or outlines, a dutiful thought partner for a brainstorming session, or just an accountability agent to help you get things out the door. I don’t see this as a substitute for creativity, but instead, as an engine.

Here’s where things get risky: sameness. Blah, boring, little boxes on the hillside writing. If everyone is using the same AI tools and deploying

brands, and people in general will be those that treat AI like a smart, capable intern—not a final decision-maker with full editorial control. Let it do the initial research, sure, but never ever ever give it the last word.

So please, don’t fear AI. Learn it. Play with it. Experiment. Use it to make your processes more efficient and your ideas more expansive in and out the office.

Just promise me that you won’t ever outsource your voice. Not because it’s cheating or morally unsound, because you will be left with a lesser product that has less of YOU in it.

In South Florida, where dogs ride shotgun on Las Olas and appear in holiday cards alongside their owners, the line between pet and family member has long been blurred. As veterinary costs climb and pet insurance policies become more common, a new category of legal work is taking shape. Miami-based attorney Daniel Gross is building his practice around that reality. Through The Gross Group, a boutique firm he launched with his father, Gross focuses primarily on pet insurance disputes. They’re cases that often begin with a denied claim and escalate into something far more consequential for owners trying to secure care for their animals.

“I realized very quickly this was happening far more than people think,” Gross says. “Most pet owners assume that once a claim is denied, that’s the end of the road. It’s not.”

Gross’ path to this niche wasn’t accidental. Pet insurance, once a novelty, is now increasingly bundled into employee benefits packages alongside health and life insurance, a sign of its rapid mainstream adoption.

The cases themselves, similar to human ones, often hinge on a single phrase: preexisting condition. It’s the most common reason insurers deny coverage, and, according to Gross, one of the most misunderstood.

“One of the first matters I handled involved a dog whose insurer claimed a serious diagnosis was preexisting because the puppy had been shaking during a routine vet visit,” he says. “Anyone who has taken a dog to the vet knows that’s not exactly uncommon behavior.”

In that case, Gross challenged the insurer’s interpretation and secured reimbursement for thousands of dollars in diagnostics and treatment.

The experience became a roadmap for the firm’s approach, which encompasses digging into records, questioning any assumptions, and, when necessary, litigating.

For pet owners, navigating that kind of language can be daunting. Policies often give the impression a denial is final. In reality, Gross notes, policyholders still have the right to pursue legal action.

The firm offers free consultations and policy reviews, breaking down coverage details before issues arise or after a claim has already been denied.

“You have to understand what you’re buying,” Gross says.

“It’s a contract at the end of the day.”

Recent legislative changes in Florida are beginning to bring more clarity to the space. A statute that took effect in 2026 introduced consumer protections, including required disclosures for waiting periods and clearer distinctions between insurance and wellness plans.

There’s also a ripple effect beyond pet owners. Because most pet insurance operates on a reimbursement model, veterinarians often find themselves pulled into disputes, fielding requests for records, letters, and clarifications after treatments are complete.

“That’s time they should be spending on care,” Gross says.

“Part of what we do is take that burden off their plate and handle those communications directly.”

Despite the legal complexity, the firm’s structure is personal. Gross describes it as a “boutique” model where clients interact with him from intake through resolution.

Cases are handled on a contingency basis, meaning clients pay nothing unless there’s a recovery.

For Gross, the appeal is straightforward. “It’s still a business,” he says, “but it’s one where you can help people and their pets at the same time.”
