We made it!

January tends to arrive with good intentions and a very long checklist.

Drink more water. Sleep better. Move your body. Become your most optimized self by Monday… it’s a lot. And for most of us juggling work, family, and social lives, it can feel more exhausting than inspiring.

That’s why the first issue of the year takes a different approach. Health and wellness aren’t about punishment or perfection, and they definitely don’t require pressing pause on real life. Today’s conversation is smarter and more personal. It’s about understanding how our bodies actually work, how stress sneaks in, and how preventative care and biohacking can help us feel better now and stronger later.

This month, I put some of that thinking to the test—literally.

I went to Humanaut, a biohacking and longevity center, for a full workup: blood panels, scans, detailed insights—everything short of a lie detector. The results were shockingly kind and reminded me that preventative care isn’t about fear. It’s about finally understanding what your body needs.

We’re also spotlighting leaders shaping the future of healthcare and wellness—from innovators advancing longevity science to practitioners redefining personalized medicine. And because wellness in South Florida includes a healthy dose of aesthetics, we looked at the booming industry that’s put our region at number one nationwide. The city ranked number two might surprise you.

The most exciting shift is that wellness has evolved past extremes. It’s no longer a choice between green juice or good wine. The new goal is balance—feeling clear enough to enjoy both. Today’s approach is built for real lives, real schedules, and real indulgences.

Feeling well isn’t about reaching a finish line. It’s about showing up energized in the lives we’re already living. The goal isn’t just to look good this year. It’s to feel good while we’re living it.

very January arrives with the same familiar pressure to reset, reinvent, and overhaul. Ainsley Rodriguez is not interested in any of that. Instead, she offers something far more sustainable to her global audience of more than two million: consistency, patience, and habits that fit into real life.

Ainsley, who lives in Fort Lauderdale with her restaurateur husband, Jarred John, and their baby girl, Mia Sophia, built her following the same way she built her approach to wellness: slowly, honestly, and with purpose. She never set out to create a digital platform, it happened organically.

“I started sharing healthy recipes and workouts online long before it was a thing,” she says.

“There was no strategy at first. Just passion and consistency.”

That foundation still defines her message today.

Her content is not aspirational in a distant, polished way. It is practical, adaptable, and grounded in lived experience.

A Foundation Built Early Ainsley grew up in Miami immersed in dance, spending countless hours training and performing. She was equally driven academically and entered college at just 16. The combination shaped her early and shaped her well. “Movement and dance taught me discipline, creativity, and how to stay connected to my body,” she says.

During college, weightlifting became her personal sanctuary. “It was my escape, my little pocket of time that was just for me,” she says. What began as stress relief became a lifelong anchor, something she protected through every demanding season.

Friends began asking for tips and routines. “That was when I realized I wasn’t just learning for myself anymore,” she says. “I was figuring out how to help others feel strong too.”

From Content to Community When she started posting simple meals and workouts, she did not expect the response to feel so personal.

“People weren’t just liking posts,” she says. “They were asking questions, trying the workouts, and coming back.”

Over time, it shifted her perspective.

“That’s when it stopped feeling like content and started feeling like a community.”

Behind the scenes, the work is anything but effortless. “Most people don’t realize how many hats you have to wear,” Ainsley says. Creator, editor, strategist, community manager. Often all at once. Discipline and intention keep everything moving.

A Smarter Way to Start the Year Her approach resonates especially in January. “I’m a big believer in starting small,” she says. “January does not need a full life overhaul.”

Rather than dramatic resets, she focuses on realistic, repeatable actions.

“Add some type of movement to your day. Drink more water than you did yesterday. Find one simple routine that grounds you,” she says. “Little habits are the ones that stick. They build momentum.”

Her own routine reflects what she teaches. “Move a little every day.

Choose one morning habit that centers you. Make at least one nourishing decision you’re proud of,” she says. “It doesn’t have to be complicated. It just has to be consistent.”

She also hopes to shift the pressure people place on themselves at the start of the year. “I hope we move away from extreme cleanses and the idea that you need to overhaul your entire life in one week,” she says. “Health should feel supportive, not intimidating.”

“Strength is not just physical anymore,” she says. “It’s emotional and mental too.”

For women easing back into movement, she encourages flexibility and restraint. “Start with what fits your energy that day,” she says. “A stroller walk, ten minutes of movement, or just reconnecting with your core. It’s about rebuilding trust with your body.”

Eating Well Without Missing Out Her approach to food is equally grounded. With her husband and his brother leading Damn Good Hospitality, the group behind Warren American Whiskey Kitchen, Room Nine01, Revolution Live, Backyard, and Stache Drinking Den, dining out

“Balance and portion control are everything,” Ainsley says. “We love ordering a few dishes and sharing. That way you can enjoy everything without overdoing it.”

Her method is simple and sustainable. Start with vegetables, choose a lean protein, and share the indulgent dishes.

“Swapping fried for grilled or getting dressing on the side makes a big difference,” she adds.

And she knows her order. “The filet is my absolute go-to.”

Looking Ahead As she looks toward the year ahead, Ainsley is not chasing growth for the sake of growth.

isandra Chaviano and her husband, Amaury Ramírez, have created something rare: two studios under one roof that honor both the art of tattooing and the choice to let go of ink that no longer fits. Together, they offer a full-circle approach to self-expression that blends artistry with science.

Amaury opened Bad Habits Tattoos in 2013 with the intention of elevating what a tattoo studio could be. “Fort Lauderdale has such a deep tattoo culture, and that’s one of the things we love most about being here,” he says. As a family-owned business, he wanted to create an environment grounded in trust and personal connection, shaped by more than twenty years of experience as a tattoo artist.

At the same time, Lisandra was working in radiologic technology at a local hospital, developing the expertise that would eventually transform their shared path. “My background gave me a deep understanding of how light, energy, and tissue interact, which is the foundation of laser science,” she explains. “Every millimeter mattered, not just technically but emotionally.”

Can each of you share your background and what drew you to pediatric heart care?

Dr. Sathanandam: I grew up in Chennai, India, and trained in pediatrics and advanced cardiology at institutions including the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Very early on, I knew I wanted to work with the tiniest hearts, premature and low-weight babies who require precise and creative catheter-based interventions. Being able to fix a life-threatening heart defect through a tiny tube, often at the bedside in the NICU, is what keeps me pushing boundaries every day.

Dr. Kalfa: My journey started in France, where I earned both my medical degree and a PhD in cardiovascular tissue engineering. I was drawn to surgery not only to save lives today but to discover how children can live better tomorrow. I’ve dedicated my career to the most complex neonatal heart surgeries and to designing valves that grow as a child grows so they can enjoy long, active lives with fewer operations.

Where do you each see the future of pediatric cardiovascular innovation?

Dr. Sathanandam: We’re entering a new era of catheter-based therapies. Interventional cardiac MRI, lymphatic interventions, and virtual and augmented-reality guidance are expanding what can be achieved without opening the chest. I’ve spent years developing procedures that can be performed right in the NICU, eliminating

high-risk transports for fragile infants. Those advances are only the beginning of what we plan to accomplish here.

Dr. Kalfa: Surgery is also evolving rapidly. The future is about precision and durability, and we are bringing that future to every child we serve.

How will your teamwork change the face of congenital heart care?

I am a pioneer of five-minute laser cataract surgery and recognized by physicians as a preeminent expert in eye laser surgery. Laser cataract surgery provides far better visual results and safety compared to traditional cataract surgery. Cataract surgery previously was highly invasive whereby the patient had a shot to the eye, and a large incision closed with numerous sutures at the conclusion of the procedure. Now, a laser can perform 90% of the procedure flawlessly in about 30 seconds. From start to finish, this painless procedure takes only five minutes which includes implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL). There are no shots, no stitches, nor any patches! The patient can resume normal activities the very next day including driving, working, and exercising. I personally wore eyeglasses from age 6 until 56 years old, and contact lenses from age 13 until 56, when I had a colleague perform the 5-minute laser cataract surgery with implantation of a multifocal lens on my own eyes, one week apart. I have not worn glasses

nor contact lenses in the seven years since the July 2014 laser procedures. My quality of vision is outstanding for driving, viewing a computer, and reading, including all the focal lengths in between.

There are a lot of health and wellness professionals in South Florida. What separates you and your practice from others in your field?

For decades, South Florida physicians have called me “The physician’s physician.” I have had the honor and privilege to serve as the ophthalmologist to several hundred physicians (and their family members) in South Florida. The physicians in the area know which physicians have certain areas of expertise and utilize this inside knowledge to seek out the best of the best medical and surgical care for themselves and their family members. n South Florida, cosmetic surgery is no longer whispered about or confined to select circles. It has become part of everyday life—widely discussed, increasingly accessible, and deeply connected to a regional economy shaped by beauty, wellness, and medical tourism.

Cosmetic and non-invasive procedures, not covered by insurance, represent a multibillion-dollar industry nationwide. South Florida captures an outsized share of that market, fueled by a dense concentration of skilled plastic surgeons and steady demand from patients traveling from across the United States and overseas.

Industry-compiled rankings consistently place Miami at or near the top in the nation for plastic surgeons per capita—outpacing Los Angeles and New York—and often position Salt Lake City as the only other metro with comparable density.

High procedure volume, driven by local residents, domestic medical travelers, and international visitors, has turned aesthetic surgery into a significant economic force for the region.

The Social Media Effect Cosmetic surgery has long existed alongside popular culture, but digital platforms have transformed how openly procedures are discussed and understood. What was once private or carefully concealed now circulates freely on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, shaping awareness well before patients ever step into a

According to Dr. Pat Pazmiño, founder of Miami Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and a practicing plastic surgeon for more than two decades, “aesthetic surgery has grown because our appreciation of beauty has also expanded.”

That shift, he explained, reflects broader changes in cultural ideals. “In the United States during the 1970s, very thin women were considered beautiful,” Dr. Pazmiño said. “This changed to a more athletic ideal in the 1980s, and in the 1990s and 2000s, curves were in. But every time our aesthetic ideal expanded, everything that had preceded it was still considered beautiful.

[So] more women were considered beautiful.

This was a very healthy change. Aesthetic surgery followed this as more women realized that they could be beautiful in their own shape.”

At his Miami-based practice, Dr. Pazmiño focuses on abdominal contouring, breast rejuvenation and minimally invasive face rejuvenation, along with a range of non-surgical procedures. He also offers what he calls the UltraBBL Technique, described as a safe version

of the Brazilian Butt Lift he developed. About 65 percent of his patients are women and 35 percent are men.

Social media has also reshaped how procedures are labeled and understood. Terms like the ponytail facelift—popularized online—reflect growing interest in subtle lifting techniques designed to deliver natural-looking results with discreet incision placement. High-profile conversations around surgical procedures have gone even further. Kris Jenner’s widely reported deep plane facelift, for example, has fueled patient curiosity about approaches that address deeper facial structures rather than tightening skin alone.

Surgeons throughout the region report continued interest in high-definition liposuction, revision breast surgery and non-invasive technologies such as ultrasound skin tightening and body contouring, alongside rising expectations for education, safety and transparency.

A Growing Audience Nationwide, cosmetic surgical procedures totaled nearly 1.6 million in 2024, while minimally invasive treatments surpassed 28 million, according to the American Society of

Plastic Surgeons. South Florida plays an outsized role in that growth.

Florida ranks among the states with the highest concentration of plastic surgeons per capita, based on National Institutes of Health–cited Google Trends research.

While California has more surgeons overall, Florida’s population-adjusted concentration places South Florida among the most active aesthetic markets in the country.

“South Florida has long had a strong reputation for excellent plastic surgeons,” said Dr. Yoav Barnavon, a Hollywood-based plastic surgeon and founder of Plastic Surgery Specialists of South Florida.

That reputation, he explained, has been building for decades. “But the broad increase in American patients really began in the early to mid-2000s. Several factors contributed: greater public awareness of cosmetic procedures, the rise of minimally invasive treatments with shorter recovery times, and increased media coverage showing plastic surgery as a viable option for both men and women,” said Dr. Barnavon, who has been practicing plastic surgery for 33 years.

Looking at the bigger picture, he added that “over the past 15 to 20 years, South Florida has become a major destination for Americans from across the country seeking high-quality care.” International patients also recognized those advantages early on, he noted, “particularly from Latin America, the Caribbean and even Europe,” who were drawn to “highly skilled, board-certified plastic surgeons with safe, accredited facilities.”

ahead, he expects continued growth driven by “younger and broader demographics, increased demand for minimally invasive treatments and international and out-of-area patient flows.”

At his practice, the strongest demand remains for breast augmentation, liposuction and facial procedures such as blepharoplasty, facelifts and rhinoplasty, alongside nonsurgical treatments. About 80 percent of his aesthetic patients are women and 20 percent are men.

Choosing Safe Care

Beauty as Business The economic footprint of cosmetic surgery extends far beyond operating rooms.

Patients traveling to South Florida for procedures frequently remain in the region for recovery, supporting hotels, short-term rentals, licensed caregivers, pharmacies, transportation providers and follow-up medical visits.

According to Dr. Pazmiño, “aesthetic surgery is a very big part of the South Florida economy.” Its impact reaches well beyond individual clinics, he added, “not just for the nurses, the caregivers, the hotels, the medical supply businesses, the pharmacies, the primary care doctors and everyone who works together to support these patients.”

At the same time, assigning a precise dollar value to the industry remains difficult because, as Dr. Pazmiño noted, “there is no central database that collects the number of procedures or the costs paid by patients.” Looking

As demand continues to rise, both physicians, members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, stress the importance of patient education and careful provider selection. “The problem of non-licensed and non-physicians who perform aesthetic procedures has been catastrophic here in South Florida,” Dr. Pazmiño said, urging prospective patients to research credentials and hospital affiliations.

Dr. Barnavon echoed that concern, noting that “there are many disreputable plastic surgery practices that employ non-plastic surgeons and provide substandard care.”

Patients, he emphasized, “should be cautious and question the credentials of their potential surgeons. They should also ensure the surgical facility is properly accredited. Patient safety is a top priority in South Florida’s legitimate cosmetic surgery community.”
