irstly all of us at Grassroots magazine would like to take this immediate opportunity to thank our contributors. Their ongoing encouragement and support has made the production of this free monthly magazine possible. As I write this opening editors message I’m sure that you’re all working tremendously hard in your pre-season training to compete for the up coming football honours 2009/2010. Grassroots magazine wish you the very best success in achieving your targets for the season ahead. We are currently the only publication in Chelmsford and the surrounding areas to feature extensive coverage of Sunday league football. We will provide you with up to date coverage for three leagues, twelve divisions including one hundred and thirty teams. Grassroots magazine will provide you with all the up-to-date particulars every month including match results, league tables and up coming fixtures. In addition, we look forward to providing you with many football related features for the 2009/2010 season and beyond. Grassroots magazine will continue to uphold great integrity for our ‘beautiful game’, and our content and features will reflect the positives in football, with the game being played the right way. This is a magazine is for everyone, especially you the players, managers, league officials and referees who participate in our Sunday football leagues. We need you to get involved and contribute to Grassroots magazine. You can do this by submitting nominations for the player of the month competition, keeping us updated with any news you have and contacting us to become the feature team for the up coming issues. JR: The main change was the fitness and organisation. When I first took over our pre-season training started late and consisted of a little running and small sided games. This season we started early, did plenty of running and really worked hard on our overall fitness. I think this helped us get off to a great start as we were a bit sharper than other teams.

helmer Wanderers competed in the C.D.S.S.L Division 1 for the 2008/2009 season. The Club had not had the best of times in recent seasons having been relegated from the Premier division at the end of the 2006/2007 and failing to bounce straight back the following year. The 2008/2009 season was to be a different story with the team gaining promotion back to the Premier Division as champions. Chelmer’s manager James Ramage took charge for his second season, turning the Club into title winners, having seen his first season finish in a disappointing mid table position. Grassroots Magazine caught up with James to find out how he turned the Team’s fortunes around. The players are put through their paces during the winter months at Chelmer Park astro turf

GR: What changes did you make to turn Chelmer from a mid-table side to a team that won the league title?

GR: Were there any new additions to the squad for that season? JR: I tried to add a bit of depth to the squad, and also tried to bring in some younger players. The majority of our side were around thirty years old and I could see a lot of teams were on average a lot younger than us. I brought in Luke Perry and Scott Smith, two players under twenty years old, also we had a few players that signed late the previous season starting the season with us. We also signed two players mid-season, Simon Warren and Tim Dixon, that really pushed us on in the latter stages. GR: What were your season’s highlights? JR: Obviously winning the league was the biggest highlight of the season, but our team performances and team spirit were particularly pleasing. There were some games where we really didn’t perform but the team dug in when they needed to and picked up the right result. GR: Were there any low points? JR: There are always low points its all about how you deal with them. Our lowest point as a team came when we lost our only league game of the season against Woodham Athletic. We led 2-1 at half time but fell apart in the second half conceding two penalties, having a man sent off and eventually losing 4-3. In the back of my mind I thought we might have lost our momentum. But the response from the lads was fantastic, and we went on to win eight out of the last nine games. For me personally the low point was going out of the cup competitions. »

Grassroots Magazine caught up with Simon to talk about the 2008/2009 C.D.S.S.L division 1 winning campaign. GR: Was this your first season as captain? SG: I was named as the captain at the start of the previous season. It wasn’t the easiest tasks as the team moral was low following relegation.

In the Essex Junior trophy we had our best ever run getting through two tough games away in Harlow, before being knocked out to Pope & Smith side Marconi Leisure. We lost in the League cup to a very good Sevens side who went all the way to the final. Losing in the cups must be a low point for every manager as we all want to be in the final. GR: What was your top game of the season? JR: I think my best game of the season was against Stelphick, a 4-1 win. It was probably the best performance of the season. Stelphick are a very good side and we needed to play well to beat them. From the kick off to the final whistle every player worked really hard to break down a resilient team to take the points. GR: Will you be making any changes for next season? JR: I don’t think I’ll be making too many changes. I will be trying to look for a few new squad players to strengthen our defence. Left back Paul Green has semi retired and Ashley Garrett has moved to the Bird F.C, so I will be looking to replace them. Other than that, keep the squad together and look to push on.

JR: I believe we have got a squad that can do well in the Premier Division. There are a lot of good teams up there so in every game we will need to be at our best. I would like to achieve a respectable mid-table position and have a descent cup run, I think this will keep the club moving in the right direction.

GR: Do you enjoy the Captains roll in the team? SG: The first season was difficult for obvious reasons, and looking back we did well to all stay together and not throw in towel. Consequently this season was totally different, there was a good buzz around the team, and everyone working as a unit. GR: What was your favourite game? SG: The first game of the season against Barlow Park Rangers. We won 5-1, and gave a good team performance. It was important we got off to a good start and showed that all the pre-season work had paid off. GR: How do you think your team will fair this season in the Premier? SG: I think we’re capable of doing well. Hopefully we can maintain the momentum from last year. We definitely have a squad capable of challenging for the highest honours.

GR: Do you have any tips for the next season? SG: I think The Knights & Woodham Athletic will be tough to beat. From what I know about the Premier division I think Wickbeech will be up there too. Any team still competing with them towards the end of the season will have done very well.

Japan’s J-League will take no punitive measures after Tokyo Verdy’s Brazilian striker Leandro’s claim that an opponent had called him a “chimpanzee”.

Helping stamp out racism in Sunday league football Kick It Out is football’s equality and inclusion campaign The brand name of the campaign – Let’s Kick Racism Out of Football – was established in 1993 and Kick It Out established as a body in 1997. Kick It Out works throughout the football, educational and community sectors to challenge discrimination, encourage inclusive practices and work for positive change. The campaign is supported and funded by the game’s governing bodies, including founding body the Professional Footballers Association (PFA), the Premier League, the Football Foundation and The Football Association. 2004 marked ten years of campaigning Internationally Kick It Out plays a leading role in the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network and has been cited as an example of good practice by the European governing body UEFA, the world governing body FIFA, the Council of Europe, the European Commission, European parliamentarians and the British Council.

Our core priorities are: • Professional football Working with the professional game by offering advice and guidance on all aspects of race equality within professional football. • Young people Using the appeal of the game to address young people within schools, colleges and youth organisations, through the development and delivery of resources and educational materials. • Amateur football Working at grassroots and amateur levels to tackle racial abuse and harassment in parks football. • Asians in football Raising the issue of the exclusion of south Asians as professional footballers from the game. • Ethnic Minorities and Sport Capacity building ethnic minority communities to engage with professional clubs, the structures of the game and access funding.

A lot of work has been done to challenge racial abuse and harassment at all levels of football, from the grassroots through to the Premiership. However, fans, ethnic minority communities and players are still racially abused, particularly at the grassroots level where racist abuse is common in amateur football on our parks at the weekend. Many fans, players, clubs and leagues have adopted a policy of Zero Tolerance. One incident is an incident too many. Kick It Out operates a reporting line that can be used to make reports, ensure effective action is taken and help you raise issues of concern. The J-League’s disciplinary committee launched an investigation into the accusations of racist taunts after Verdy’s midweek second division game with Ventforet Kofu. Verdy expressed disappointment on Saturday after J-League officials said they were unable to verify Leandro’s claims Kofu defender Arata Sugiyama had called him a “chimpanzee”. The Brazilian was booked at the final whistle after protesting too little injury time had been played and complained Sugiyama had racially abused him in the subsequent melee. Sugiyama, who was also alleged to have made ape-like gestures, denied making any remarks to Leandro. “The Kofu player denied making the remark and the other players said they did not hear him say it,” said J-League chief secretary Hideyuki Hanyu. “The J-League now has 36 teams and we have more foreign players coming in so racist problems are something we will need to deal with.” Verdy were unhappy about the J-League’s decision. “It is extremely disappointing,” the club said in a statement. “We hope the J-League takes proper and practical steps to eradicate (racism).” Leandro added: “It’s very upsetting but I have to put this behind me and help Verdy get promotion back to the first division.” Kofu president Kazuyuki Umino said he believed Leandro had misheard Sugiyama. “Sugiyama probably said the world ‘shinpan’ (referee) and it may have sounded like (chimpanzee),” Umino told the Sports Nippon daily. “He had no logical reason to call him that.” Incidents of racism towards black players are rare in the J-League, although crowd violence has become a problem at some grounds, notably Japan’s best-supported club Urawa Reds.

his will be my first year as the chairman of the Pope & Smith Chelmsford Sunday Football League. On behalf of everyone associated with the league we welcome you all to the new 2009/2010 season. Let us all hope that all five of our leagues will be as closely contested as last season and that the weather permits the completion of all our cup programmes. I would like to congratulate Writtle on winning our Premier Division for 2008/2009 and for reaching the ECFA Sunday Premier Cup final. On behalf of the management committee and clubs, we would like to wish them every success. It seems that no sooner do we complete one season, than we look forward to the start of the 2009/10 season. I would particularly like to welcome all nine of the new clubs who will be taking part in the new season, and it is always good to see the considerable interest shown by clubs that wish to participate in this league. Good luck to all of you in your first season in the competition and hopefully it will be the first of many. It was good to see a few new winner’s names on our trophies for last season and I would like to wish all clubs success in the forthcoming season but most of all, I hope you continue to enjoy your football with us. By the time you read this message, your pre-season will be underway and the first fixtures scheduled for 6th September will be rapidly approaching. Don’t forget to ensure that your registration cards are with the registration secretary as early as possible to avoid any last minute rush to sign on that player who is going to make all the difference to your season! This magazine is for all clubs and players, and would benefit from any input direct from you. Firstly, I would like to wish Grassroots Magazine the very best of luck with their new venture, which I am sure will be a success. Last season was another success for the league with one of our own sides, Noaklands, winning the Essex Junior Trophy. The league’s success in this competition in recent seasons has resulted in our premier division teams now taking part in the Essex Junior Cup from next season onwards. It is testament to the strength of our premier division that the Essex County Football Association have made this decision. I would like to congratulate those teams that won divisional trophies and our cup competitions last season, and also to wish all clubs success in the new season which is rapidly approaching. We have one new club joining the league this season, and I would like to take this opportunity of welcoming Uplands Rangers. I hope you have a successful season and enjoy your football with us. irstly can I say a big welcome to my regular column. I hope you will join me in welcoming the only magazine specifically for Sunday league football in Chelmsford. In this column I will be discussing the issues referees face on a weekly basis, and hopefully put forward our side of the story, giving a balanced view. This season many of the local football leagues will be introducing the FA respect campaign www.thefa.com/TheFA/Respect and as you may know this is designed for all in the game to show respect toward each other, and towards match officials – its not too much to ask is it? The latest figures show that football leagues are losing 7,000 referee’s a year, an astronomical amount. The main factor to this is the attitude of players towards referees. A young referee in his first season who is abused or threatened is not going to want to come back next week – and this is a common occurrence across the country. We do appreciate that a lot of abuse is frustration – but it should be channelled in a constructive way. We often get into positions in life where we get frustrated on a daily basis and react in differently – would you for instance tell your boss you think he’s a w****r?! 40

I believe that the referee’s job is to manage the players, implement the laws of the game, and above all else enjoy it too! We get no satisfaction in handing out red and yellow cards, and in most cases it spoils the game.

We do appreciate that a lot of abuse is frustration — but it should be channelled in a constructive way With regard to respect, this starts before a game – a phone call early in the week to your opponents and/or referee and a greeting when they arrive at your ground. I am not for one minute assuming it will all be friendly on the field of play, but we have noticed if players are injured, opponents are more inclined to put a ball out of play to allow treatment, and playing a ball back to your opponent usually brings praise. At our level of football many of you know each other socially which can help with disputes on the pitch This calms things down and shows respect to your opponent and the referee. This can help to make the referees job easier when everyone is working towards a competitive but fair contest.

My belief is the longer you referee the easier it gets. Teams begin to know you and your refereeing style, and we are able to gauge games early, thus preventing future conflicts between regular faces. Those of you who have been unlucky enough to referee a game know how hard it can be, how many of you walk off at full time and say “I couldn’t do your job ref”. We do it because we enjoy it and want to give something back to the game. These clauses prohibit the goalkeeper from intentionally handling the ball when a teammate uses his/her feet to intentionally pass them the ball, or from intentionally handling the ball when receiving directly from a throwin. The goalkeeper is still permitted to use his feet and other body parts to redirect the ball. Conversely, if an outfield player passes the ball back using any part of the body besides the feet, the keeper may pick up the ball. An unintentional pass or touch is not considered an offence. The actual offence committed is the handling of the ball by the goalkeeper, not the ball being passed back, where an indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team. Its Introduction The back-pass rule was introduced in 1992 to discourage time-wasting and overly defensive play, after the 1990 World Cup was described as exceedingly dull, rife with back-passing and goalkeepers holding up the ball. Keepers would frequently drop the ball and dribble it around, only to pick it up again once opponents put them under pressure. Therefore, another rule was introduced at the same time, with the same intentions. This rule prohibits the goalkeeper from handling the ball again once he has released it for play. When back passes go wrong! Paul Robinson was famously left embarrassed as England crashed to a dismal defeat against Croatia in the Euro 2008 qualifier in Zagreb. Gary Neville’s back-pass struck a divot as Robinson swung a boot to clear, only to watch in agony as the ball rolled in the back of the net to make it 2-0. orget the warm weather we’ve been sporadically enjoying recently, thousands of Chelmsford City fans can’t wait for the cut and thrust of their favourite winter sport to begin! That anticipation was further heightened recently when the fixtures were announced for their 2009/10 campaign in the Blue Square South as Glenn Pennyfather’s side look for another crack at promotion to the top tier of the non-league game. Head Coach Pennyfather will lead his new-look side into an opening fixture against Bath City at Melbourne on Saturday 8th August after the new season’s fixtures were announced by the Football Conference committee. Chelmsford will, therefore, be looking to avenge their 3-2 defeat against the West Country outfit last season at home and hope to follow that up with a favourable result away to ex-Blue Square Premier side Woking on the following Tuesday. A Thurrock double is again scheduled for Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, with a visit of Dover Athletic in-between and City will finish on Saturday 24th April with a tough journey to Havant & Waterlooville. Pennyfather, who was recently confirmed as the main figure in the dugout this season after Jeff King moved into a Director of Football role, believes there are some tough games coming-up. “I expect Bath City and Woking to both be in the top seven or eight so that will be a 42

difficult start and the game at Havant to finish will also be a test,” he reacted. “We’re gradually pinning players down and have a number of triallists still with us, plus we’ve now confirmed the registrations of Jon Keeling, Ollie Berquez and Ashley Harrison for next season.” Club development Meanwhile, it isn’t just the first team who are preparing for a new campaign as the club’s blossoming community focus extends to developing their talented youth sides right through the age groups.

We have recently completed our extensive trial programme, and we’ve introduced a large number of players into the club, bringing with them academy experience. The future is exceedingly bright at City if the words of ‘Elite’ Groups Head Coach, Glen Wilkinson, are anything to go by after the Clarets’ youth manager revealed: “The quality of the players within the club is very, very high.” City have opted to invest a great deal of time and energy into the progression of their younger players, many playing under the youth set-up as Elite teams in the Under 14s to 16s and 18s age groups. Now Wilkinson has expressed his

Fixtures 2009/10 excitement at the increasing wealth of talent available to the club from within the existing structure while incredible prospects continue to request trials with the Clarets. “The Elite section is gathering strength at great speed,” he beamed. “We have recently completed our extensive trial programme, in which we’ve introduced a large number of players into the club, bringing with them experience of academy football.
