Picked up our first title in September 2021 and have gone on to win 4 titles in total In September 2022 we started a reserves side for the 6 a side and even had a c team at one point The club was started by a group of mates just wanting to kick a ball about, The club grew from strength to strength and more players wanted to come and have a go That’s when I’m March 2023 we decided to start an 11 a side charity side playing once a month So far we have played 6 win 4 drawn 1 and lost 1 whilst raising around £2000 for charity Since starting the charity side we also became the winners of the children’s charity cup.

It was always my dream to have my own football club, I’ve played for some decent clubs in my area but always felt like I could do more than just play for a club so in June 2021 a few of us got together and started a little 6 a side team at northern gateway Colchester, at this point we didn’t know how successful we would become by September 2023 we had 4 league titles. We now to this day run 3 successful sides and a b team on a Thursday 6 a side league as well as our fresh newly formed charity side raising money for the robin cancer trust. The squad is made up of people who just wanted to come and get involved and have all played various levels on the football pyramid. So far we’ve raised around £2000 since playing our first match in May 2023, we are aiming to play a game In every county of England and maybe abroad one day doing a tour we’ve already played in 3 counties this year but we want to play In more by Christmas. Why tekkerslovakia? Literally I just googled funny 6 a side team names and this one stuck, so we went forward with it . Why green?? Our first shirt sponsor was a company called Oakheart property who’s company colours are green, so we just continued it even after the deal finished, we love it. Since starting the charity team we have been sponsored by many local companies all ranging from player sponsors to kit sponsors, some of the sponsors I’d like to especially thank are D KNIGHT LANDSCAPES. SRB CONTRACTORS. JONES SEALANTS and HOMEBUILD SOUTHEAST for making us look the part on matchdays. A few other companies and businesses have also sponsored events for us including ORLA ROSE ASSOCIATES, LEISURE LEAGUES COLCHESTER and ROOTS AND GROOVES CAFÉ.

Words from the Chairman Ross Barnard

Tekkerslovakia Charity football club is still to this day the best thing I’ve ever done, and I hope it runs for years to come, although some of us are getting on now ha ha. Moving forward? we would like to play against a professional clubs legends team or even a celebrity 11 at a professional ground in the off season, if there are any clubs out there wanting to face us please get in contact.

The main aim of this was to raise as much cash for charity as possible and so far it’s proving successful. The boys get fired up on match day and I’m so happy that some of my best mates have jumped on board the project I look really forward to seeing where this ends up, personally I feel as long as everyone stays on board, we could really continue to make a difference. I’m in the process of trying to organise a charity tournament or maybe even a league as the number of charity teams in Essex, Kent and London are phenomenal WATCH THIS SPACE!!

probably the best 6 a side team in Essex. I feel privileged to have been given the captains arm band for Tekkerslovakia. A club that I feel has very high potential to go on and achieve some big things and help raise money for many charities across UK. Not only am I captain of the club, I have the pleasure of sponsoring the greens with my company D. Knight Landscapes. Fast forward 2 years, it now seems everyone wants to join our club and become a part of the tekkers family. with our squad now boasting over 30 players. Age ranging from 21- 50 at an average age of about 35. Not bad for what was just a 6 a side team. Our new aim is to help fund charities, playing under the lights against whoever is up for taking us on. Celebrity teams are more than welcome. As well as consistently winning the 6 a side league of course!

KitAid

‘Its more than Just a shirt …’ KitAid is national charity, in its 25th Anniversary Year, dedicated to finding a new home for your unwanted kit & equipment in areas of the world where football is loved, but participation is held back by a lack of access to kit & equipment. KitAid works with projects supporting some of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable communities in the world projects supporting education, skills training and those seeking to prevent harm. We know the power of football and its force for good in people’s lives and hence the strapline – ‘It’s more than Just a Shirt …’ We report here on KitAid’s success in reaching the target for sharing 1 million items of kit & equipment and its fundraising efforts this year with the Great KitAid Road Trip visiting 25 grounds in Essex and photographing the KitAid banner.

KitAid is a charity first brought into being by Derrick Williams, MBE after a chance encounter with a Tanzanian child wearing a worn-out Liverpool shirt, whilst Derrick was visiting a water project in the country. Derrick recognised in that child & the community a love for the game, but there was a serious lack of resources for kit & equipment to support their active participation in the game. So, Derrick returned to the UK and organised, with his friends, to get their own personal collection of kits together and to send them out to Tanzania.

grassroots magazine

Reaching 1 million is huge. A huge milestone reached this month, for a charity based exclusively on volunteers and your goodwill sorting & organising kit donations.

Well from that first encounter and the first box of kit sent out, 25 years later, Derrick has overseen over 1 million donations of unwanted kit & equipment shared with communities across around 90 countries.

grassroots magazine Ask’s the Questions to East London Baller F.C GR: Start by telling the story of how East London Ballers were formed? ELB: Initially I was managing a team from 2018 till just when COVID started. Then Sadly my brother-in-law passed away, I had a few health concerns and I had to give it all up. I ran the whole club from top to bottom, but I had to step away and take a break. I did want to get back into it, but unfortunately, for whatever reason, I wasn't able to go back to that same club and obviously they had moved on slightly. They were doing a bit better. I left all my players there, which I said I would, and I helped maintain the club in the background. Following a conversation with my cousin, who was also managing our so-called rival team, we talked about instead of doing it for someone else, why don't we just create our own club ourselves and that was how we started East London Ballers.

GR: Have you managed to get into a league? ELB: Yeah, we're in the Essex Sunday Corinthian division two, we thought we were initially meant to play higher up in the Premier Division due to this we ended up losing ten of our players who went on to play for a Premier Division team. So, we had to do a quick rebuild of the team, literally couple of weeks we've been on social media and now 90% of my squad is complete with 80% of them are under 20. They don't know each other as they are all through social media.

GR: With such short notice have you got kits & equipment ready to started? ELB: I like to be very well prepared so even with all the things happening in the background, the uncertainties I had already ordered two sets of kits and I had all my training equipment ready to go. I had to get sponsors on board, I got all of that sorted. We initially in preseason, we were using Wanstead flats as a training venue as obviously it's free. We recently moved to West Ham Foundation, we have moved there now for the foreseeable future, it's a brilliant facility.

GR: How has your season started? ELB: We had our first game two weeks ago against the favourites for the title this year, unfortunately we lost to them 2/1. GR: That's not a bad result, if they're the favourites though, is it? ELB: Yeah. No, we gave them a run for their money. we missed a lot of chances, but it is always going to take time as a new team to gel, like I said, 90% of them don't know each other this season is going to be a learning curve for us.

GR: So, what is the future for this Club? ELB: We would like to add some youth teams and start to build for the future. We are currently in talks with two teams where I am looking to partner with.

18

ELB: Yeah. it's a funny one because one of the players, he's from the Ivory coast and he spoke to my cousin who’s managing the team. He said, look, people at home love football but they have got no football kits and they're not privileged, they are very poor. So, it was an initial talk and then? We got together with a kit company sent a bit of money to them. I sent over the Logos, they did everything and created two football kits, one for under 14/15 and one under 16/17 in two different cities. The money we sent has gone a long way, with them being able to make replica kits like ours. They have sent pictures, and it is great to see our donation is helping them to enjoy football. It’s amazing that what has been achieved from what was initially just the conversation between our striker and the manager. We can’t wait to continue the great work that we have started.

grassroots magazine

GR: So, tell us about your charity bits then?

Things have progressed so well that we got photos and videos, this has inspired us to do even bigger things in other countries. Myself, I'm a Muslim and I'll be honest with you, I had no idea that there were a lot of Muslims in the Ivory Coast. I just thought we had given money for charity helping less privileged people in Africa, but when I found that obviously some of them were Muslim’s it touched me more personally. Our aim is at some point maybe not this year, as it is quite hectic, but we want to fly out there at some point and see them first hand and set up some sort of summer camp out there with them. We want to not just supply them kits, but also supply them with equipment. I'm assuming they won't have the best equipment out there. When you the surface, it’s rocky, Sandy not like the footballing surfaces that we get here where it's 4G under the lights.

GR: Thanks for your time good luck for the season and all your fund-raising efforts, it all in the name of football, this is the power of football so positive and bringing everyone together. What you are doing is brilliant, keep doing what you're doing,

Thank you to Gazza From EAST LONDON BALLERS F.C

Football Fitness Club Established in 2019, Football Fitness Club was formed by two former teammates that had recently retired from the Sunday League game having created a successful Management partnership.

After taking a short break, both missed getting out of the house to train with the lads, so the idea of Football Fitness Club was born. The initial idea was to create a training club for those that had retired from the game, to help players maintain their fitness levels. They quickly realised that the sessions attracted players of all ages & abilities so both decided that they would start taking the FA coaching courses. With the number of players increasing weekly, FFC added another 3 coaches 1 of which had fitness qualifications, they also added equipment so that the sessions could include a range of drills for fitness, agility & games. With the Pandemic forcing FFC to stop for a while planned sessions were created so they were ready to start up again as soon as possible. A partnership was also established with Mates Mental Health support group who they put on weekly sessions for. This was a great success, so Mates FC was formed & the coaching team helped them complete an unbeaten maiden season. Football Fitness Club run training sessions every Thursday in Chelmsford. If you are interested in joining Football Fitness Clubs weekly session, Please contact: footballfitnessclub@btinternet.com

SPRINTING TECHNIQUE

ANALYSING RONALDO’S SPRINTING TECHNIQUE

In terms of sprinting technique, Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t conform to the highknee, bent-arm image we’d expect to see in athletes competing in an Olympic 100m sprint final. In fact, his straight-arm running style goes against much of what would be considered optimal for both footballers and Olympic sprinters, but there can be no denying that he’s one of football’s fastest ever players. So, where does Ronaldo’s speed come from? ELITE SPRINTING TECHNIQUE When you sprint, opposite arms and legs work together to help stabilise your torso. With a stabilised trunk (mid-section from your waist to your neck) there’s a more efficient transfer of force from your body into the ground and back. It’s this transfer that propels you forwards. If you’re unable to stabilise your trunk well, it leads to a side-to-side swaying effect as you run and the transfer of force to propel you forwards is diminished. Working opposite arms and legs together in a coordinated and synchronised way is going to help you maximise the transfer of force required to move at greater speed, but your leg turnover speed is also highly influential, and this is limited by the speed of your arms. A common training technique to help with the positioning of your arms when sprinting is to think of moving your hand from your hip to your cheek, aggressively switching from one arm to the other. Try jogging on the spot without moving your arms, put your hands on your head to keep your arms out of the movement. Now bring your arms into the movement, aggressively pumping them hip to cheek as if sprinting and you’re going to notice that your legs are able to move faster. INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES Hip to cheek arm swings with an elbow bend of around 60 to 90 degrees can be considered optimal, but there are always going to be individual differences between players who have not been taught this technique from the moment that they started running and playing football. The way that Ronaldo moves his arms is different to the optimal technique which is taught, but it’s not a technique he has intentionally developed to get faster, it’s just his natural way of sprinting.

29

For this reason, attempting to imitate Ronaldo’s sprinting style is not a smart idea. Remember that although very important, sprinting technique is not the only thing which helps to produce great speed out on the pitch. Ronaldo is also one of the most reactive and powerful men in football. In a 2016 video, Ronaldo’s counter-jump (vertical jump with hands on hips from a standing position) was shown to be 44cms. This gives a measure of the amount of power he can produce from a standing start and it’s fair to say that a lot of athletes (even non-elites) could match his performance on this one. However, when he switches to a jump from just one leg, using his arms and with a brief run up, he achieves 78cms, a truly elite performance that very few can match. To put it into perspective, Ronaldo is 1.87m tall, but his vertical jump power would give him the same slam-dunking advantage as an NBA basketball player standing well over 2m tall. Yes, there’s a general set of rules that elite-level sprinters follow in terms of optimal sprint mechanics, but individual differences might see one sprinter use a slightly longer ground contact time compared to another with a springier style. Spending months making tiny technique adjustments that lead to straight line speed gains of only a fraction of a second can make the difference between a podium position in athletics, but in football, spending this much time focusing on trying to significantly alter your straight line sprint style will take you away from other aspects of training which are just as important for elite performance. KEY POINT: Ronaldo probably could run even faster if he altered his sprinting technique, but spending time working on that one tiny aspect might negatively impact other areas of his game.

The energy Ronaldo can store in his Achilles tendon is largely responsible for the level of speed and agility that we see him perform week after week. He also has arguably some of the most powerful legs in the game, if he had a perfect sprinting technique but lacked these two qualities, then his speed capability would be significantly lower. SPRINTING PRACTICE For those of us who can only dream of Ronaldo’s speed, sprint practice on the pitch and the development of strength, power and explosiveness in the gym holds the key.

30

Of course, being mindful and practicing optimal sprinting mechanics whilst doing this is a smart idea and means you’re killing two birds with one stone. THE BOTTOM LINE To get faster at running, you need to sprint often, allow for full recovery between each sprint and practice using optimal sprint mechanics. The lesson we can learn from Ronaldo is that it’s extremely difficult not to allow for individual differences, as long as they aren’t significantly holding you back (they may even be helping you in other areas of your game) it makes sense to embrace them and focus your training time on the areas which will move the needle the most.

Grassroots is proud to be supporting Farleigh Hospice Grassroots Magazine is delighted to be supporting local charity, Farleigh Hospice. In each edition, we will be sharing with you their latest news along with upcoming events that you can get involved in! Farleigh Hospice has been a cornerstone of our local community since 1982 when, following the death of a lady called Audrey Appleton from cancer, her friends Glenda Lance and Dr Gill Collier launched an appeal to establish hospice services in and around Chelmsford. Since its creation later that same year, Farleigh has provided hospice care to thousands of people affected by life-limiting illnesses and bereavement across mid Essex. The hospice, which is celebrating its 40th birthday this year, continues to help people to live as actively as possible from the point of diagnosis to the end of their lives, by providing physical and emotional care, free of charge. As a charity, Farleigh relies on the generosity of the local community to raise the £6 million it needs every year to care and support those who rely on its services. One of the ways that Farleigh engages with the community is through the range of fundraising events it organises throughout the year, which are listed on its website -
