CHECK OUT ALL THE END OF SEASON YOUTH RESULTS

AUGUST 2023 ISSUE 10

First of all I’d like to say how sorry we were to hear the sad news from Essex Charity FC of the passing of Dave Neill. Our thoughts are firmly with everyone at the Club & Dave’s family at this time. Dave & the boys at Essex Charity have worked with us from day 1 at Grassroots Magazine & we will continue to offer our support for every match that they play & we hope they continue to grow the Club & raise as much money as they can in Dave’s memory.

Essex Charity FC’s next match is against Ravens Legends at Heybridge Swift’s, Spa Road CM9 8JF on Friday 11 August, 8pm KO. Please get down & show your support.

FC Vilomah are this Months Club feature. The Club are more than just a football team, they provide a unique way for bereaved dads to come together, through the love of sport & feel at ease about talking about their grief. They run various events throughout the year & have raised over £40,000 for their chosen charities. Good Luck to the 2 teams they have competing in the Vets & Chelmsford Sunday Leagues in the coming season.

Its great to see that the FA have launched a new strategy for Grassroots refereeing in England. Referee’s are a huge part of our game & everything should be done to help them progress & enjoy the game. Please see the link below for the full story.

https://www.essexfa.com/news/2023/jul/27/thefa-launches-new-landmark-strategy-forgrassroots-refereeing

With the new season just around the corner we wish you all the best for the pre-season friendlies & that 2023-24 brings you every success.

Great KitAid Road Trip

In this KitAid's 25th Anniversary year, local KitAid Volunteer Barrie Neal has taken up the challenge to visit 25 football grounds across Essex, where he is to photograph the KitAid banner.

Undertaking the KitAid challenge Barrie is collecting funds for KitAid's work at a JustGiving site https://www.justgiving.com/page/roadtrip-essex1677775751739 which provides more details. Updates on the progress being made is also being provided on a dedicated twitter account at EssexRoadTrip2023 @Trip2023E .

Great support has already come from visits so far to Broomfield FC, Springfield FC, Wilvale Rangers FC and Runwell Sports FC.

Runwell Sporting FC have also gone the 'extra mile' providing pitch side advertising (using their own KitAid banner) and made a massively appreciated and much needed financial donation direct to KitAid too.

Can Barrie visit your ground and photograph the KitAid banner ?

grassroots magazine 10

If you are interested in Barrie adding your ground to the Essex KitAid Road Trip please let him know so that he can schedule it into the list of 25 grounds to be visited this year. He will just want to agree a time that he could photograph the banner at your ground. His JustGiving site is also open if you are able to make any financial donation to his KitAid fundraising effort: https://www.justgiving.com/page/roadtrip-essex1677775751739

KIT COLLECTION AND DONATIONS

The focus of KitAid's work, is of course the collection of unwanted football kit & equipment and its distribution to areas of the world where the game is loved, but participation is held back by lack of access to kit & equipment.

Most recent collection and distribution totals show just how close the charity is to reaching the magic 1 million items of kit & equipment shared and spreading smiles for the love of the game.

6,080 items donated in April

43,215 items donated in 2023

977,112 items donated since 1998

22,888 items to go until the 1 million.

Do you have any unwanted

kit to donate ?

Our clubs across Essex, with schools and local people, have been providing kit donations for many years now - but the 25th Anniversary year is extra special. If you anticipate having any unwanted kit or equipment this year you might consider contacting local KitAid volunteer Barrie on barrie.2014@yahoo.co.uk

Mayland Village FC have had pictures back of their own substantial kit donation, which is now spreading smiles for the love of the game in a rural village in Zimbabwe:

Football Fitness Club

Established in 2019, Football Fitness Club was formed by two former teammates that had recently retired from the Sunday League game having created a successful Management partnership.

After taking a short break, both missed getting out of the house to train with the lads, so the idea of Football Fitness Club was born. The initial idea was to create a training club for those that had retired from the game, to help players maintain their fitness levels. They quickly realised that the sessions attracted players of all ages & abilities so both decided that they would start taking the FA coaching courses. With the number of players increasing weekly, FFC added another 3 coaches 1 of which had fitness qualifications, they also added equipment so that the sessions could include a range of drills for fitness, agility & games.

With the Pandemic forcing FFC to stop for a while planned sessions were created so they were ready to start up again as soon as possible. A partnership was also established with Mates Mental Health support group who they put on weekly sessions for. This was a great success, so Mates FC was formed & the coaching team helped them complete an unbeaten maiden season.

Football Fitness Club run training sessions every Thursday in Chelmsford.

If you are interested in joining Football Fitness Clubs weekly session, Please contact: footballfitnessclub@btinternet.com

MATCHFIT

HELPS YOU WITH PRE-SEASON

TRAINING

30

KEY PRINCIPLES OF PRE-SEASON TRAINING

Whether to ease into pre-season training or go hard from day one is a question many players ask. If you rush into pre-season training, either by launching into intense training straight away or by giving yourself too short a period of preparation time, your injury risk is going to be higher.

TRAINING LOAD

Training load is the term used to quantify the amount of work you’re doing in a session or over the course of a week. Dr Tim Gabbett has carried out extensive research on the topic and his acute: chronic ratio is now widely used in a variety of sports to help athletes achieve peak fitness without increasing the risk of injury. The current week’s workload is your acute load and the workload of the previous four weeks is your chronic load. If the acute load is 1.4 times greater (or more) than the average week of the chronic load, the risk of injury increases significantly. For example, let’s say that over the last 4 weeks your workloads have been 100, 120, 130 and 135. Add these together and divide by 4 to get your average chronic load of 121.25. This means that if this week’s workload goes above 1.4 x 121.25 (169.75) then your risk of injury will greatly increase.

KEY POINT:

If you go straight from being on holiday or doing nothing into a high training load, the spike in workload increases your potential to pick up injuries. It’s simply a matter of adhering to the tried-and-tested principle of progressive overload. Gradually increasing the difficulty of an exercise leads to gradual improvements as the body adapts to cope with the increase in workload.

ADAPTATION TIME

Changes and improvements in physical qualities can’t take place overnight. One huge session in the gym won’t trigger the body into producing hypertrophy, it takes repeated efforts with progressive loads to bring about adaptation and muscle growth. During pre-season, you’re training multiple elements of fitness at the same time. It may take only a few speed sessions to refine your technique and make improvements in terms of sprint performance, but training for lasting hypertrophy is going to be a longer process.

In beginners, strength gains are primarily from neural gains rather than actual muscle growth. Gains in muscle mass become noticeable at around 8 to 10 weeks into a progressive programme, so this gives an indication of the time frame needed in preseason to make improvements that will transfer into performance gains out on the pitch.

KEY POINT:

Adding muscle or improving strength is not something you can do with just two weeks of pre-season. You might be able to get a bit of a “pump” on, but the transfer of this to improvements on the pitch will be limited.

PROGRESSIVE OVERLOAD

Easing into pre-season training is going to give you maximum benefits with minimum risk of injury. A sensible time frame to allow is 10 weeks, essentially giving you time to rest at the end of one season and then gradually return to peak fitness for the next season. Allowing time to follow a progressively overloaded programme will ensure you make the improvements that will boost your performance in training and matches and stay injury free. In terms of preparing for the football season ahead, slow cooking wins over microwaving every time.

Where we started…. In October 2019 its was meant to be a 1 off charity match to raise funds for a national baby loss charity. As the weeks went by more and more bereaved dads in Essex got in touch and meet ups became friendly matches and matches turned into joining a league having 20 families involved with the club. Fast forward 3 1/2 years we now support over 50 families across the county.

Fundraising…. We don’t tend to play charity football matches; we don’t really get time to having a vets and open age side compete in 2 Sunday leagues and we find across the board teams come and go for one reason or another. Whilst we’re a charity team we’re here to support bereaved families and that to us is more important than any match. We run plenty of events throughout the year that help us fundraise for our chosen charities having raised over £40,000 to date.

Golf Society… we now run a large charity golf society with over 100 members so if that’s something you're into get in touch. We play at some of the best clubs the U.K. has to offer!

The Charity…. Having for nearly 4 years now raised awareness and funds to support local and National Charities we felt the time is right to start our own! This will open doors that will allow us to continue the work we do on a larger scale and help more people.

What we do…. FC Vilomah is a unique way for bereaved dads to come together through the love of sport, find a support and feel at ease talking about their grief when they're ready.

We meet every Thursday evening for a kick about and those who wish to we compete in 2 Sunday leagues, we run various socials throughout the year bringing our community together and run several fundraising and awareness events.

What we do….

We have a what’s app group that any bereaved dad can join, there’s no commitment to attend training or matches, it really is a support group that fits in to your needs. It’s open to any dad that has lost a baby due to miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death regardless of when this happened.

Grassroots is proud to be supporting Farleigh Hospice

Grassroots Magazine is delighted to be supporting local charity, Farleigh Hospice. In each edition, we will be sharing with you their latest news along with upcoming events that you can get involved in!

Farleigh Hospice has been a cornerstone of our local community since 1982 when, following the death of a lady called Audrey Appleton from cancer, her friends Glenda Lance and Dr Gill Collier launched an appeal to establish hospice services in and around Chelmsford.

Since its creation later that same year, Farleigh has provided hospice care to thousands of people affected by life-limiting illnesses and bereavement across mid Essex. The hospice, which is celebrating its 40th birthday this year, continues to help people to live as actively as possible from the point of diagnosis to the end of their lives, by providing physical and emotional care, free of charge.

As a charity, Farleigh relies on the generosity of the local community to raise the £6 million it needs every year to care and support those who rely on its services. One of the ways that Farleigh engages with the community is through the range of fundraising events it organises throughout the year, which are listed on its websitewww.farleighhospice.org/events

Here we take a look at some of the exciting events coming up… the Annual Quiz, Sponsored Doggy Walk and Autumn Shopping Extravaganza!

Chelmsford City Football Club is delighted to announce that Defender, Frankie Terry, has re-joined the club on Loan from Colchester United

Terry, 19, has come through the Academy at Colchester United and experienced a successful spell on loan with the Clarets last Season where he won the Supporters Young Player of the Year award and has now re-joined the club where he scored his first senior goal last season making 26 appearances in all competitions. Frankie had involvement in the Colchester United first team towards the end of last season as well as during the U’s 23/24 Pre-Season campaign.

Manager Robbie Simpson spoke on Frankie Terry re-joining on loan “It’s great to get Frankie back, we had a lot of great loan success stories last year and he was definitely one of them. He won our Supporters Young Player of the Year, fully and deservedly so in my opinion. He came to us effectively as a Youth Team player and left us as someone who can handle the robustness of Men’s football week in, week out. His game has just developed so much and we were just so pleased with the loan from every angle and so were Colchester.”

“Going into this Pre-Season if Frankie wasn’t to be with Colchester’s first team then we’d have always loved for him to come back. He was always keen to come back and Colchester wanted him to come back, it’s taken probably a little longer than we expected once we knew he wasn’t going to be involve in Colchester’s First Team towards the back end of Pre-Season. But the deal’s done now and he adds to our squad, if you look at our defence from last year we had the second best defensive record in the league. We’ve only lost Adebola now from that unit in terms of a defender plus a change of Goalkeeper. We’ve brough in Luke Jenkins as Ade’s replacement. We’re looking strong again in that area and we are delighted that Frankie is back”

Chelmsford City Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of Goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi on loan from EFL League One Side Portsmouth

Oluwayemi, 22, came through the Academy set-up at Tottenham Hotspur before playing in a range of domestic and European competitions at Under 18 and Under 23 level during his time at Spurs. Oluwayemi had a short term loan spell with Berkshire based Vanarama National League side Maidenhead United to bolster the Magpies ranks towards the end of 2020. Josh departed Tottenham in July 2022 where he moved to Hampshire side Portsmouth, where he has since gone on to make 9 appearances keeping 4 clean sheets in the Papa John’s Trophy and EFL League One.

Robbie Simpson shared his thoughts on Josh Oluwayemi signing for the Clarets “As you could probably imagine given the success last year of Ovie and Eddie we had a number of clubs wanting us to take their goalkeepers on loan, top clubs. Top Premier League Clubs, Champions League clubs so we pretty much had the choice of what we wanted. We identified Josh last season as someone we really like and had circumstances been different i.e. him not being part of Portsmouth’s first team and actually playing the last few games of last season he could well have been with us last season. We’re delighted to get him this season, we identified him as the one we wanted and we’ve been patient and waited for him.”

“A big thanks to Portsmouth for keeping in regular communication with us. We agreed this loan deal quite a while ago but obviously they’ve had a Pre-Season, plus a need to bring in a couple of Goalkeepers before Josh would be allowed to come out. We kept in regular communication with Portsmouth and they’ve been really good to deal with so a big thanks again to them.”

“We’ve managed to get Josh in with us, obviously in an ideal scenario we would’ve had him in earlier and bedded him into the club but Portsmouth wanted and needed him. I’m sure if you asked them they would’ve wanted to get their business done a bit quicker as well. He’s still going to have had over a week with us before the start of the season, with our first game against Farnborough on Saturday. We’ve got the game against Arsenal that he will now play in and we’ve got a great group so I’m sure we will get him bedded in quickly to what we are all about. We can’t wait to see him in between the sticks for us.
