MWFA AWARDS $42,500 IN SCHOLARSHIPS The MWFA held their annual Scholarship awards on November 4th. Ryan Sweeney, former Major League Baseball outfielder joined the group to address the attendees especially students sharing his experiences leading to his profession. He played in Major League Baseball for the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, and Boston Red Sox. The MWFA Scholarship Program began in 1985 with the intent of being a test program. The Board of Directors thought they’d create a scholarship application, send it to all the member companies and see if any applications came back. Originally there were 8 applications returned. The association awarded a few scholarships and decided to try the program again the next year. The Scholarship Program quickly caught on and more and more applications were coming in, member companies became supportive of the program, and it has continued ever since. Awarding scholarships and helping to further education has always been very important to the MWFA. We thank Glen Brin of Innovative Components, Wayne Wishnew of XL Screw, Matt Delawder of SWD & Jake Davis of BTM Mfg. for taking the time to serve on this committee. We appreciate their dedication in reviewing the applications! To date the MWFA has awarded $854,500 in scholarships. In addition to the MWFA fund raising efforts, we thank companies and families donating scholarships making it possible to award larger scholarships to several applicants. MWFA would like to congratulation all of this year’s Scholarship Winners.
$4,500 RICHARD S. PISKOTY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (Donated by Clarcorp Industrial Sales) Richard Piskoty’s life led him in many directions and every path he took he made an impact on many people, from the kids he taught and coached to the salespeople that worked for him. It is because of his devotion to his family, dedication to his career, and desire to pass on and give back to others that this scholarship is dedicated. This scholarship was awarded to Elias Hyatt, son of Caroline Hyatt of EFC Int’l. Elias is a freshman at Missouri University of Science & Technology. He is planning to obtain a master’s degree in Physics as well as some form of music. While he is unsure of his future career he hopes to find something that is engaging and allows him to discover more about the world in interesting ways. $4,000 XL SCREW CORPORATION SCHOLARSHIP We would like to extend a special thank you to XL Screw Corporation for donating a scholarship for the 23rd year. We are very fortunate to have given out $62,500 in the name of XL Screw Corporation. The original idea of a scholarship program came out of XL Screw and has had amazing growth. Ron Sackheim Ron Sackheim, former President of XL Screw Corp, passed away December 6th at age 80. Ron battled Parkinson’s disease for over 23 years. Ron was a very passionate supporter of the CBNSA/MWFA. He has been on the Board of Directors , was a past President of the CBNSA and is a member of the CBNSA Hall of Fame. Ron was a huge Cubs, Bears and Bulls fan. He enjoyed travel, tennis, jogging, bridge, and neighborhood basketball games. He especially loved music. He took
piano lesson and played the piano for many, many years. Ron will be truly missed. Donations can be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Emma is a freshman at the University of Cincinnati majoring in Biology/Pre-Med and minoring in Business. Emma’s goal is to become a plastic surgeon as plastic surgeons give people hope from their tragedies or take away the insecurities running through their mind. $4,000 BRIGHTON-BEST INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP We thank BrightonBest for donating this scholarship awarded to Joshua Church, son of Barbara Newman of Brighton Best Int’l. Joshua is a high school senior planning to pursue Nursing in college. A recent surgery experience helped him realize that he wanted to be a nurse who keeps patients calm and knowledgeable of what is to come. Raul passed after spending 50 years in the fastener industry. He was a gentleman who mentored many. Raul spent several years on the MWFA Scholarship Committee. Because of Star’s generosity, this scholarship will continue.

Spencer is a freshman at Eastern Carolina University where he is pursuing his degree in Education. He would like to become a History professor. He looks forward to educating the youth of tomorrow.

Don Westby Don Westby passed away on November 22, 2021, at the age of 78. Don is survived by his wife Linda and two children Pamela Westby and Matt Westby (Lisa),
and granddaughter Audrey. Don grew up Michigan’s upper peninsula and attended Western Michigan University from 1961-1964. Don played football four years for Western Michigan. In 1961 he played in what Don referred to as the “original Ice Bowl,” the Aviation Bowl, in Dayton OH. Don earned a mechanical/ auto engineering degree while at Western Michigan, which included work study at Ford Motor Company. He started his fastener
career at Elco Industries, Rockford IL, and later as a sales engineer at Hoyt Fasteners in Niles IL. After 12 years at Hoyt Fasteners, Don decided to take the plunge and start his own fastener business in Grafton WI: Westby Production Components. He and his wife Linda were the first two employees. After 25 years growing Westby Production Components, in 2013 Don and Linda sold Westby Production Components and Don retired. Don was an active member in the National Fastener Distributors Association and the Mid-West Fastener Association. The family will hold a celebration of Don’s life later in the Spring.

Jackie will be working closely with Jerry Roscoe in preparation for his retirement in June of 2022, eventually taking the Mid-West territory over as her own. She started her career with BBI, where she fast-tracked her knowledge of nuts and bolts, becoming a branch manager. SANTA HELPS MWFA CELEBRATE HOLIDAYS
Part of the industry’s Holiday tradition, for many, is attending the MWFA Holiday party. The MWFA wanted to be sure to take the opportunity to visit with industry peers and collect Toys for Tots. The attendees donated a great deal of toys as well as almost $2,000 in cash for Toys for Tots. It’s very gratifying to see the attendees arriving with armloads of toys! Santa was present checking his naughty or nice list. He couldn’t find any on the naughty list so he stayed and enjoyed

visiting and taking photos with the guests. Several guests also won raffle prizes donated by members and the MWFA. Who doesn’t like an extra present at the holidays! READER’S CORNER continued OLANDER GOES LIVE WITH E-COMMERCE Fastener distributor Olander recently unveiled its new website, which offers visitors the ability to order fasteners and hardware online. The site also features free 2D and 3D CAD (computer-aided drafting) files and spec sheets for over 40,000 products, and practical advice on the purchasing and application of different fastener options for all types of projects. While Olander largely serves the industrial community (primarily in the medical, semiconductor, and aerospace fields), it has also been a trusted resource for engineers and inventors through its robust counter and will call offerings. Awards range, in value, from $1,500 to $4,000. Companies wishing to offer a scholarship in their name, or name of their choice, may do so with a donation of $1,000 or more.
