Mid-West Fastener Association CELEBRATING 75 YEARS COMMITMENT TO THE FASTENER INDUSTRY WINTER 2021
MWFA AWARDS $43,500 IN SCHOLARSHIPS MWFA celebrated this year’s scholarship recipients on November 5th by a virtual meeting. As of this year, the MWFA reached $812,000 in cumulative scholarship dollars awarded since the beginning of this program. This consists of 586 scholarships (ranging from $500 to $6,000) awarded to 134 member companies. The MWFA Scholarship Program began in 1985 with the intent of being a test program. The Board of Directors thought they’d create a scholarship application, send it to all the member companies and see if any applications came back. Originally there were 8 applications returned. The association awarded a few scholarships and decided to try the program again the next year. The Scholarship Program quickly caught on and more and more applications were coming in, member companies became supportive of the program, and it has continued ever since. We are very grateful to all our scholarship donors and especially those who chose to donate a separate scholarship. Those donations allow us to award some larger scholarships. This year we are fortunate to have seven larger awards. MWFA would like to congratulation all of this year’s Scholarship Winners. $4,000 XL SCREW CORPORATION SCHOLARSHIP We would like to extend a special thank you to XL Screw Corporation for donating a scholarship for the 22nd year. We are
very fortunate to have given out $58,500 in the name of XL Screw Corporation. The original idea of a scholarship program came out of XL Screw and has had amazing growth. Many students have benefited from this program since its inception. We appreciate XL Screw’s continue support of this great program. This scholarship was awarded to Madison Scariano, daughter of Tracy Scariano (Tracy was also a former scholarship recipient) of Inland Fastener. Madison participated in several groups in High School and continues to do the same in college. Madison attends Indiana University majoring in Marketing and minoring in Media and Creative Advertising. She hopes to obtain a marketing position in a non-profit charity organization. $4,000 RICHARD S. PISKOTY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (Donated by Clarcorp Industrial Sales) Richard Piskoty’s life led him in many directions and every path he took he made an impact on many people, from the kids he taught and coached to the salespeople that worked for him. It is because of his devotion to his family, dedication to his career, and desire to pass on and give back to others that this scholarship is dedicated.

PISKOTY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP continued (Donated by Clarcorp Industrial Sales) This scholarship was awarded to Ellie Fuerbringer, daughter of Dean Fuerbringer of Endries Int’l. Ellie is a High School senior participating in many activities throughout High School while maintaining a high grade point average. She plans to major in Arts Administration Management. She hopes to work in a professional theatre on the business side of things. $4,000 BRIGHTON-BEST INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP (Donated by CBrighton-Best International) We thank BrightonBest for donating this scholarship awarded to George Hunt IV, son of George Hunt III of Brighton-Best International. It appears George IV has follows his father’s footsteps in ambition and dedication. George is a High School Senior who has spent his High School career involved in many activities while taking several AP classes. His passion for baseball led him to work hard to prove himself on a team as well as decide to pursue a course of study working towards becoming a GM for an MLB team with several other back up plans. $4,000 RAUL TORRES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (Donated by Star Stainless) Thank you to Star Stainless Screw for donating this ongoing scholarship in Raul’s name. Raul passed after spending 50 years in the fastener industry. He was a gentleman who mentored many. Raul spent several years on the MWFA Scholarship Committee. Because of Star’s generosity, this scholarship

will continue. This scholarship was awarded to Katie Breck, daughter of Christopher Breck of Alper Services. Katie currently attends Marquette University pursuing a major in Writing-Intensive English and minors in Interdisciplinary Law & Society, Digital Media. Katie has always been involved in clubs and organizations, received several awards and has been determined to prove “that humanities do matter.”
$2,000 BTM MFG SCHOLARSHIP Thank you to BTM for donating this additional scholarship awarded to Rachel Gray, daughter of Corey Gray of Buckeye Fasteners. While staying on the Honor Roll through her whole education career, Rachel has been a competitive figure skater and ice dancer since 2008 Rachel is attending college studying Occupational Therapy to focus on Early Childhood Education Nutrition and Psychology.

Doug Adams We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of fastener industry entrepreneur and pioneer Doug Adams. Doug passed peacefully at home among his family on December 8, 2020. Doug was a larger than life and one of a kind individual, well known and respected throughout the fastener industry for more than 50 years. Beyond his entrepreneurship, Doug was an avid artist, biker, designer, fisherman, art collector, pet lover, boater, philanthropist, husband, father, and grandfather. Doug Adams was the founder of engineered fastener distributor EFC International, which he founded in 1983. Prior to that, Doug was involved in the fastener industry as a manufacturers representative known as D.F. Adams & Associates dating back to 1968. EFC International, headquartered in St. Louis, MO, has grown to be a global leader
in the supply of engineered fasteners with multiple locations including North America, Europe, and Asia. Doug was very proud of EFC’s expansion and he leaves a tremendous legacy of passion, commitment, ambition, and vision for the world of fastener distribution and engineering. Doug leaves an indelible mark on the fastener industry. Part of his pioneering was establishing EFC as one of the first fastener distributors specifically focused and dedicated to highly engineered fasteners and branded product lines, and intentionally building a sales team of engineers capable of design and innovation. Doug’s contributions to the industry are widespread, including his part in the creation of what a “Master Distributor”can evolve into, customer and supplier partnering, and one of the earliest adopters of visionary
technologies that are now widely utilized across the industry. Doug was recipient of many fastener industry awards over the years, but what he was most proud of in business was the growth he enabled for customers, suppliers, the company, and employees. Doug will undoubtedly be remembered for his boisterous and energetic personality. In a room of a thousand, you always knew Doug was there or he would eventually make sure you knew. More than that, people will remember his passion for the industry, his brilliant mind, his unique perspectives and his generosity to causes dear to his heart. His legacy on the industry will endure and we celebrate his impact and memory.

Belvedere Banquets in Elk Grove, IL will host this year’s Table Top Show. Fastener suppliers are invited to showcase their products and/or services at this one day show. This format provides an economical convenient avenue for exhibitors to showcase their products while educating industry personnel on products. The MWFA was once called Chicago Bolt, Nut & Screw Association. With evolving times and increased interest in membership the association changed their name to Mid-West Fastener Association to avoid confusion that only Chicago members could join. MWFA began moving meetings around the Midwest. The CBNSA has a great deal of history and many people to thank. Our CBNSA past presidents will be entering the CBNSA/MWFA Hall of Fame August 16th. We invite all past Board Members, all association members, fastener friends and families to attend. The 75th anniversary celebration will be special times to be part of and remember. Everyone loves learning about past history that they can relate to. What better way to learn about the past of the MWFA than to come meet those people responsible for earlier years and hear their memories. We will have special speakers from the last few decades of the CBNSA name. The Fastener Training Institute and the Industrial Fasteners Institute partner to present the week-long intensive version of FTI’s Certified Fastener Specialist advanced technical training program. This class will be offered at the Belvedere, Elk Grove, IL. Fastener Training Week includes everything that a student would experience in the regular seven-course CFS training, but on consecutive days. MWFA Members receive registration discounts. The Fastener Training Institute’s core purpose is to enhance fastener use, reliability and safety. By providing fastener product and technical training at all levels, FTI can achieve its goal of strengthening the industry and its personnel in all segments. INDUSTRY VETERAN CELEBRATES 40 YEAR MILESTONE IN THE BUSINESS Marty Selgrad. The name itself is familiar to those in the fastener industry. This February, Marty will celebrate 40 years in the business. Starting in the warehouse at Bell Fasteners, Marty shortly moved into inside sales, before moving onto Reynolds, HTI, Stelfast (now Lindfast), Selgrad has been one of the leading sales reps over the last four decades. After a brief stint in standup comedy, Marty found his true calling in selling nuts and bolts.

HOLIDAY PARTY FUN DESPITE COVID! When 2020 began we expected in December we would be at the MWFA Holiday Party bringing toys, visiting Santa, sharing cocktails, doing a a little gaming and a lot of networking. Then in person events came to a screetching halt and we all made the best of the uncertain times. Depsite the turmoils of 2020, the MWFA moved forward with a virtual Holiday Party providing great fun, prizes, and the networking we all crave. We received comic relief with ventriloquist Chuck Fields, voted on the best Holiday outfit with the winner being George Hunt III of Brighton Best International, followed by a visit from Sargeant Paul Casazza from Toys for Tots who was kind enough to share the history of the Toys for Tots. Toys for Tots began in 1947 as the idea of Marine Corps Reserve Major Bill Hendricks. Major Hendricks and the Marines in his reserve unit in LA collected and distributed 5,000 toys in 1947. At that time, here was not an organization through which to distribute toys. Seeing such successful community engagement in 1947, the Commandant directed all Marine Reserve Sites to implement a TFT campaign transforming it into a national community action program in 1948.
Since 1947 over 584,000,00 toys have been distributed to over 265,000,000 kids. In 2019, in just the DuPage area, 24, 156 children were able to receive toys thanks to the generosity of donors to Toys for Tots. MWFA Members and industry personnel made it possible for the MWFA to award a check for $2,500 to the Sargeant Caszaa for the Toys for Tots. Thank you to all who donated, you made Christmas for several children! The party then went on to have a fun trivia contest with questions on the industry, the MWFA and even a few of our unique members. Kelly Charles knows her industry,

she won a gift card for winning this contest. Before settling into some fun networking several raffle prizes were donated sponsored by our Holiday Party sponsors and EFC International. Bruce joined BTM Manufacturing as an outside sales representative five years ago and played a key role in expanding and growing the business. Bruce was a staple at industry tradeshows and traveled nationwide for face-to-face meetings with customers.
