FSTNR WEEK 2023

Beautiful people…

That’s how our Tenuta Torciano Winery hosts addressed us during wine school; so, I thought I should share a bit of the experience with all of you. The MWFA’s most recent event at Venuti’s, which was unique for our association, wrapped up a busy and successful ending to Q1. I am thankful for the hard work of our board, and it was evident through our educational and networking events in February and March. We are just getting started…

As you may know, the MWFA has

MWFA WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS

MWFA would like to welcome the following new members to the Association, we thank you for your support.

formally begun our search to replace Nancy Rich as Executive Director. Thankfully, we are not in any rush since Nancy will be working with us until the end of the year. However, we do need your help. If you are interested or know of someone who you think would be interested in the Executive Director position, please feel free to share this job description with them: www.mwfa.net/pdf/Ex-Director. pdf. I know that we have a tough task ahead of us, but our board is committed to finding the right person.

Also, at our most recent board meeting, we discussed who we could get as a speaker for our Scholarship Awards Dinner. It was amazing to have the Chicago Bears Dan Hampton last year and we want to follow that up with another great speaker this November. If any of you have any leads or suggestions for a potential speaker, I sure hope you will reach out to Nancy or me. By the way, does anyone know how to get

ahold of Cheryl Scott?

Finally, I, along with some of our board members, their spouses, and sons, made a trip down to Kankakee, IL. We teamed up with Sleep in Heavenly Peace and we were able to deliver and assemble 7 beds between 3 households. It was just a great experience and I believe Tommy Lewis, age 9, summed it up best when he said, “I bet those kids who we helped today are really excited to go to bed tonight in their new beds. I’m glad we did that.”

As always, thank you for your support of the MWFA. We are excited about what lies ahead for our association! Wishing you all continued success and we hope to see a lot of you at Fastener Fair USA down in Nashville in May.

God Bless,

WIFI TO AWARD MARYANN MARZOCCHI EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP

WIFI honors the memory of Maryann Marzocchi, Co-Owner of Distributor’s Link Magazine. Maryann started her career in the fastener industry at Southern Screw Company in 1958 in the sales department where she developed her love of sales and service to customers. Maryann left Southern Screw to be home with her children and start her own business, Accurate Addressing and Mailing Service. Her at home business flourished as she worked with many fastener companies creating and managing all of their newsletters, advertising, correspondence, and mailings.

In 1976, Maryann’s brother-in-law Leo J. Coar recruited her to start a quarterly publication with him. They saw a need where people, products, and in-depth reporting could all come together in one publication and be conveyed to the fastener

industry. Link Magazine published its first issue in Winter 1977.

Maryann served as Co-Owner and Vice President of Sales & Marketing. Working together with Leo for 36 years and with her daughter Tracey Lumia for 15 of those years, her love of the fastener industry was evident. Through the many trade

shows she attended, her relationships with advertisers, writers, associations, and numerous industry friends she made throughout the years, Maryann had a unique ability to connect with people and bring them together.

“Working side-by-side with my mother for over 15 years was an honor. I’m proud of all that she accomplished both in business and personally. This scholarship will allow other female ‘go-getters’ to achieve their dreams just as she did. Thank you to WIFI for honoring Maryann with this scholarship.” –

The $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to a woman to attend college or trade school. The recipient must have a female family member who is employed by a fastener company.

Deadline to apply is June 5th, 2023.

In 1967 they bought Continental Screw Machine and eventually moved to Wheeling, housing Multi Spindle Acme & Davenports to manufacture fasteners. For 75 years they have been manufacturing and distributing locknuts and other fasteners.

They hold the 1st ESNA licensee for Locknuts. Abbott is still family owned, currently by the 3rd generation Binder family. Abbott has always been involved in the industry across the board – 3 previous MWFA Presidents (Martin Binder, Richard Binder, Bob Baer) have come out of the Abbott family. ARE YOU READY TO JOIN THE ‘RUGGED NUTS’ IN 2023?!

By Monday, August 21st, this group will be getting prepared for what is quickly becoming an annual favorite MWFA event , namely FSTNR Week. But 48 hours earlier, on the Saturday before, they will tackle 25 obstacles in the 3rd annual fastener team mud race, The 2023 Rugged Maniac.

We may find ourselves face down in mud, climbing walls and rope ladders, wading through, and swinging over water, jumping over fire, and crawling under barbed wire just to name a few of the obstacles. We started this tradition 2 years ago and not only was it fun and challenging, but we created a bond between contenders which goes beyond fasteners. No doubt you heard about it or have seen footage and pictures on social media.

The course is 3.1 miles long and includes 25 obstacles, all of which present

a challenge, some tougher than others. The good news is each participant to date has not missed one obstacle. How you ask ? – Simple, we start and finish as a team, Team Rugged Nuts, where no one gets left behind!

Join us this year, Saturday, August 19th in Grayslake, Illinois. No car, no worries. We will arrange for your pickup. There are plenty of us going and many of us staying at the Lincolnshire FSTNR Week venue, to provide

a ride. For additional information email Bob Baer bbaer@aicfast.com or George Hunt ghunt@brightonbest.com. Curious about the course or the obstacles? Take a peek at www.ruggedmaniac.com. Also, listen for additional details on upcoming Fully Threaded Radio episodes.

Come to the show, just arrive a few days early and join some of the industries toughest crowds. Create stories and memories that will last a lifetime.

Garfield “Gar” J. Edmonds III, 72, of Houston, TX, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Born the son of Garfield J. Edmonds Jr. and Lois S. Edmonds (Freed), Gar grew up in the Roxborough section of Philadelphia. He graduated from Roxborough High School in 1968 and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from Pennsylvania State University at State College, PA, in 1972.

After graduation, Gar pursued his passion for manufacturing and distributing metal fasteners and spent most of his career building his business, Alloy & Stainless Fasteners. Founded in Houston, Alloy & Stainless grew to have locations in Texas, Pennsylvania, Oregon, California, and The Netherlands. Up until his death, Gar had no plans to retire, and was always exploring new ways to expand his businesses.

Gar’s second home, for nearly thirty years, was Second Baptist ChurchWoodway campus in Houston. He participated in Bible studies, served in the Angels of Light Christmas charity, played a wiseman in the Christmas pageants, and attended weekly Saturday night dinners with his friends from Second Baptist. Gar loved singing and could be heard joyfully hitting every note in service, especially Christmas carols!

Traveling was Gar’s other passion. He had visited every continent and loved to tell stories from his many travels. He especially loved traveling with his daughter, Callie, to Maui, Hawaii and Breckenridge, CO.

Of all of his accomplishments, Gar was most proud of being a father and grandfather. He never missed a day picking up his daughter, Callie, from school and eagerly attended every event that was important to her. In later years, he would often drive from Houston to Austin to enjoy a simple meal and spend time with Callie, Ian, and Owen.

Gar is survived by his daughter, Callie E. O’Donnell, her husband, Ian, and grandson, Owen, of Austin, TX. Also survived by his mother, Lois S. Michael, of Richlandtown, PA, brother Kenneth K. Edmonds (Emily) of Souderton, PA, and sister, Stacy Edmonds, of Wyndmoor, PA. He is preceded in death by his father, Garfield J. Edmonds Jr., stepmother, Lorraine C. Edmonds, and stepfather, Lavern S.”Mike” Michael.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that

you make a donation in Gar’s memory to Meals on Wheels or a charity that has special meaning to you.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www. lambfuneralhomeinc.com for the Edmonds family.

FASCINATION WITH FASTENERS CLASS

The MWFA’s most popular class, Fascination with Fasteners, was held on March 23rd with over 40 students attending. The class ranged anywhere from the brand new employee to the veteran. Surveys indicated everyone walked away with new fastener knowledge while enjoying the class. This hands-on class with a plant tour to Allstar Fasteners allows students to gain

knowledge in many facets of the industry. It is because of our industry specialists, Tom Blakley (Brighton Best Int’l), Bill Vodicka and Adam Anders (Allstar Fastener), Matt Delawder (SWD Inc.), and Jeff Adams (Wing-Hamlin) that we can share so much information in one day. David Gawlik (Stelfast Inc.) has spent several years on the Education Committee working to enhance this class.

Based on attendance, David has succeeded!

We appreciate all those contributing to making this class possible.

Visit www.mwfa.net for other upcoming classes: Essentials of Metallurgy (May 24th) and Basic Print Reading (August 22nd) and Fastener Training Week (more infor at www.fastenertraining.org) (August 21st-25th).

AFC INDUSTRIES HAS ACQUIRED ARLINGTON, TEXAS BASED QFC INDUSTRIES

Founded in 1973 as Quickway Fastener Company, Inc. and later being rebranded as QFC, the company is a distributor of fasteners and other small components to a diverse group of manufacturing and assembly customers in the United States, Mexico, Europe and China.

QFC owner and president Clay Roark said, “Our team and our business have been successful and were growing, so it was not an easy decision to sell, and once we decided to do so, we had many potential partners that we could have selected. We felt AFC brought a unique combination in that they have an excellent reputation both as operators on

the distribution side as well as a tremendous track record for integrity and professionalism in how they handle acquisitions. We wanted to be sure our customers and our employees were going to be treated well and that we picked a partner who would do what they said they would do.”

Jason Danner, Vice President of Operations for QFC, added, “QFC is well positioned to continue growing and to create opportunities for our team, customers, and suppliers. AFC understands what has made us successful, and now as part of their team, we have the depth and resources that will allow us to do even more.”

AFC CEO Kevin Godin said, “We are excited to have Clay, Jason, and the QFC team join the AFC family. With QFC, we were able

to find a great team that operates with the same dedication to customer service as AFC does, and allows us to address important strategic objectives. For example, QFC strengthens our presence in the South and West, deepens our capabilities in at least two key customer markets, and adds talent and depth to our support teams. We believe there are several immediate opportunities on which the newly combined businesses will be better positioned to execute.”

AFC Industries is a dynamic organization dedicated to providing supply chain management solutions for fasteners, tooling, and assembly components.

On March 30th, the Mid-West Fastener Association had the pleasure of hosting an exceptional wine tasting event provided by Tenuta Torciano Vineyards of Tuscany. From the moment the event began, it was clear that this was no ordinary MWFA dinner meeting. The setting at Venuti’s Ristorante was elegant, and you felt instantly transported to Italy with the beautifully decorated room and the winery’s expert sommelier guiding us through the tasting. Each wine was presented with an informative and engaging commentary, and the experience was both educational and entertaining. The

wine selection was impressive, featuring some of Tenuta Torciano’s most popular and acclaimed wines. From the crisp and refreshing Vernaccia di San Gimignano to the full-bodied and complex Brunello di Montalcino, each wine was a masterpiece of winemaking. The anti-pasta provided by Venuti’s helped to enhance the tasting and created an authentic experience.

One of the highlights of the tasting was the Super Tuscan, a rich and velvety red blend that left an unforgettable impression on the palate. The sommelier’s detailed explanation of the wine’s production process, including the careful

selection of the grape varieties, made the experience even more enjoyable. Overall, the Tenuta Torciano wine tasting event was a resounding success. It was clear that the winery’s dedication to quality and craftsmanship shone through in every sip of wine.

It’s clear that Tenuta Torciano is a winery that takes pride in its work and is committed to creating exceptional wines. If you have the chance to attend one of their tastings or visit their winery in Tuscany, I highly recommend that you do so – it’s an experience that you won’t forget anytime soon.
