Mid-West Fastener Association CELEBRATING 77 YEARS COMMITMENT TO THE FASTENER INDUSTRY FALL 2023
FSTNR WEEK DELIVERS WITH MANY OPPORTUNITIES The unofficial start of FSTNR week began on Saturday, August 19th, with the Rugged Maniac 5K obstacle course race. There were 30 fastener industry “athletes” that competed and finished together at the event, followed by a group lunch in downtown Grayslake, IL. Since beginning in 2021, this popular event has grown each year and the Rugged Nuts are already looking forward to next year. On Sunday, August 20th, the week was launched with a Bed Build with Sleep in Heavenly Peace. SHP provides beds and the necessary bedding to children in need of a bed. Over 100 volunteers gathered at Abbott Interfast in Wheeling, IL to build 100 beds. The high temperatures did not stop hardworking volunteers from spending 6 hours building beds. Plenty of cold water and Gatorade was on hand to keep these busy workers hydrated but the highlight was when food trucks from Cheesies, sponsored by Brighton Best Int’l and Kona Shaved Ice, sponsored by BTM Manufacturing. made their way to the build site. They were a
welcome site!! We thank Abbott Interfast and their crew for their hospitality in hosting this event where there was plenty of room to accomplish this great task. On Monday, August 21st, several companies including: Allstar Fasteners, DLP Coatings, SWD Inc, and Three J’s Industries, hosted plant tours. While having the opportunity to showcase their company they provided education in allowing guests to observe processes firsthand. Learning more about our industry through tours has always been a helpful tool for broadening one’s fastener education. The Marriott Lincolnshire, Lincolnshire IL was this year’s venue for several of the events. The location provided an all in one spot creating less travel and a central location to meet industry friends after events. Tuesday, August 22nd was a busy day beginning with a 4-hour Print Reading Seminar taught by Sean Collis Quality Lab Manager of Metallurgent Test Lab. Record attendance and Sean’s teaching made the class informative as well as fun providing a wealth of information to the students.

And just like that, MWFA FSTNR Week has come and gone...what a week we had in Lincolnshire, IL! On behalf of our entire board, thank you so much for attending and supporting all our events. It was a jampacked week, starting off with our second Sleep In Heavenly Peace Bed Build ($27,750 raised and 100 beds built) and ending with our traditional relaxed mixer on Thursday evening. In between our book end events, we just happened to host one of our largest table top shows ever with 103 exhibitors and a total attendance of over 550 people. Many of you stayed around and took part in what was probably our hottest golf outing to date. For those of you that braved the heat and humidity, thank you for your support and staying hydrated. In what was Nancy’s final show week, I am proud to say that our industry certainly showed up and showed out! Now, I want to turn your attention to education as the MWFA is very excited to be teaming up with Paul Reilly for an allday seminar on The Power of Value-Added Selling. This educational sales seminar

FSTNR WEEK DELIVERS continued Later that morning, FSTNR Week hosted a panel discussion on artificial intelligence featuring Brandi BertoiaINxSQL Software, Lyndon LattieSmartCert, Eric Dudas-Fully Threaded Radio, and Jason Therrien-Thunder Tech. With AI being a huge buzz word in most industries these days it makes sense to make yourself aware of the pros and cons and where you can best utilize AI. Attendance was an indicator of everyone’s curiosity regarding AI. The show opened at 1pm and featured over 100 exhibitors from across the country, providing various fastener products, industry services, software, and more. The show was busy throughout the day with a
great attendance keeping exhibitors busy. Exhibitors commented on the many decision makers and new potential customers they were able to visit with throughout the day. At 5:00 the Retro 80’s Fastener Bash opened on the show floor allowing exhibitors to continue meeting with attendees in a more social environment. Many donned their 80’s attire (even those not old enough to

remember the 80’s!!). The show became a party, and the industry always enjoys a party, so it was a great mix. Wednesday, August 23rd featured the 70th MWFA Golf Outing. Bob Baer Abbott Interfast Bob started his career in accounting in 1979, joined Abbott Interfast in 1992 as Controller, and became CPA certified in 1993. He managed accounting for more than 15 organizations owned by the Binder family and was promoted to Vice President in 1995. In this role, he oversaw Manufacturing, Purchasing, Warehouse, and IT. Bob was appointed President/CEO of Abbott Interfast in January 2017, a position

Eric Dudas & Brian Musker FCH Sourcing Network / Fully Threaded Radio Long time collaborators, Eric Dudas and Brian Musker came to the fastener industry during a speculative project of their web application development business, and co- founded FastenersClearingHouse.com, later re-branded the FCH Sourcing Network, in 2006. They launched the industry renowned Fully Threaded Radio podcast in 2010 to promote their growing digital platform. Along the way, they created the FCH Scrubber, an AI-like software tool to manage fastener data, and soon after began providing data cleansing and formatting services to fastener distributors. They also launched the widely circulated Fastener Distributor Index in 2011
