FSTNR WEEK DELIVERS AUGUST 16-20, 2021 continued The Historical Committee which includes George Hunt III (Brighton-Best International), Glen Brin (Innovative Components), Paula Evitts (Avante Imports), and Jill Lewis (Integrated Packaging & Fastener Inc.) were instrumental in bringing back the CBNSA/MWFA Hall of Fame. Inductees into the CBNSA Hall of Fame included: Alina Agresto, Richard Binder, Martin Binder, Tom Blakley, Henry Chernow, Craig Cohn, Nick Couzin, Arne Henriksen Sr., Arne Henriksen Jr., Kevin Kaihara, Bill Lang Sr., Howard Langdon, Mark Novak, Don Nowak, Bob Obeler, Wally Olczak and Nancy Rich. Two companies were inducted into

the MWFA Hall of Fame: Wrought Washer Manufacturing and XL Screw Corporation. All these inductees have been instrumental in the success of the CBNSA and MWFA. The festivites continued as later in the evening guests attended a presentation by Matt McMillin, head chef of Cooper’s Hawk Winery including a lesson in making a couple of cocktails. Attendees were presented with CBNSA/MWFA 75th Anniversary wine stoppers and bottles of wine with gold etched 75th Anniversary logo. The evening was definitely a memorable evening for the MWFA and the fastener industry! »» continued on page 4

FSTNR WEEK DELIVERS AUGUST 16-20, 2021 continued The next day 128 golfers gathered at Chevy Chase Country Club to enjoy an awesome day of golf. With the great support received, there was a contest on every hole. Golfers began their day with lunch and ended with prizes and dinner. Congrats to the top two teams. First place: John Butler, Tom Buddenbohn, David Bryne, and John Wachman. Second

place: Oliver Baumann, Brian Christianson, Wes Grobelny, and Andre Lizano. As of October 8th, things in the transportation world are changing at a record speeds, almost faster than I can put these newsletters together. As I’ve mentioned before, while today’s transportation bottleneck makes it near impossible to pass long good news, we will always give you the straight, honest outlook on what’s happening in the market so you can prepare or adapt your business to the events shaping the transportation world today. OCEAN FREIGHT » Could we be seeing rates decrease for the first time in almost a year? Rumor has it we will following the conclusion to the Golden Week in China but what’s driving the decrease and how long will the decreases late? » Our own FMC and DOT departments are now actively looking into the transportation crisis after several lawsuits are filed against the ocean carriers, the rail and the accessorial surcharges importers are being hit with. What will be the impact, when will the investigations conclude and will it put more over-sight into the global supply chain process? » Trans-loading is the flavor of the month as carriers continue to limit inland rail cargo. If you’re not translaoding today, you might want to as the overall cost comparison is similar to rail and you’ll probably get your cargo quicker. » Port congestion continues to be a problem

and while there are more than 65 container vessels sitting idle off the coast of Long Beach and Los Angeles, we’re seeing issues in most ports. Savannah appears to be the worst on the East Coast with more than 15 vessels awaiting unloading. With more than 100 vessels awaiting unloading here in North America that number fails in comparison to the total number of containers vessels awaiting to be loaded in China. With more than 150 awaiting to be loaded in Shanghai and Ningbo and another 100 sitting elsewhere in China, this will play a big part in ocean cost decreasing. » Here’s a new one, ocean terminals are declining the return of empty containers, this is leading to the carriers as well as the chassis owners charging increased costs. AIR FREIGHT » Demand is increasing, this is due to several closures or service suspensions overseas. Places like Shanghai, which was shuttered for several days, and Eva Airlines cancelling all flights for the Far East to the Midwest, which is causing cargo, build ups in places like Dallas, Houston, Los Angles and Atlanta. » Air rates are on the rise. Since the start of September rates have climbed about 35% 50% depending on the trade-lanes. INTERMODAL (RAIL) » The demand for rail is tapering off but this is due to the carriers limiting inland cargo but the rail coming out of Seattle and Tacoma are suffering substantial delays as these passage point typically services cargo into the Upper Midwest and Ohio Valley from the West Coast.

» Trans-loading is taking a big bite out of the rail demand and is also taking driver capacity out of circulation as well. TRUCKING » Capacity and tonnage for trucking is increasing as the industries peak season starts. Finding drayage, OTR and Short turn drivers are becoming difficult. For Ocean drayage, forwarders and importers need to be booking their respected loads as soon as the cargo departs the origin to ensure cargo can me moved from the ports once it arrives. » Due to the increase in tonnage and capacity, truckers are not being selective they are looking at distance, cargo weight and frequency to determine if they want to move the shipments. » Chassis Shortages are becoming more and more frequent as ocean and rail terminals are denying the return of empty containers here in the US, each container is mounted on a chassis and if you can’t return the container, you can’t return the chassis. INFRASTRUCTURE & GOVERNMENTS » China is running on fumes! Recently China announces a reduction in power and production as they suffer from diminished fossil fuel resources. Several countries including Russia has stepped up to help but will this drive down capacity and equipment restraints in China? » Pressure is mounting on the ocean carriers as several lawsuits have been filed and with our transportation boards looking into the questionable service tactics by the carriers, the governments of China and the US are looking to fix the transportation bottleneck sooner rather than later.

BOB MONTI Robert L. Monti (Bob) (Robert L.) 74 passed away Sept 17, 2021 in Sarasota Florida. Bob, originally from Philadelphia served his county in the U.S. Army, then began his career in the fastener industry at George K. Garrett Co. of Philadelphia as a salesman. He went on to work for Wrought Washer Company before opening his Rep Agency Fastening Services in the 1980‘s covering the state of Michigan. Bob, was well known in the fastener industry from California to New York….”you can never know too many people”. He enjoyed attending MWFA , MFDA, NCFA along with other association functions, staying in touch with all he met on the way. Bob’s claim to fame was being on American Band Stand in the 60’s. During his introduction “Bob Monti…Philadelphia” whipping himself around (face first) right into the huge wooden cut out of the United States on national television. He still landed on his feet ! Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, discussing politics and most of all getting together with friends over dinner and drinks. Bob, is preceded in death by his son Christopher, survived by his brother Dennis Monti along with his nieces and granddaughters. He will be missed by many close friends and fastener associates.
