WHY AIS?

F

or many, school selection is not an easy decision. For others, the choice is clear.

Dan and Tricia Roarty, parents of Maeve ’22 and incoming student Caroline ’19, were asked to recount their decision to send their daughters to Agnes Irwin. They remarked, “It was a palpable feeling when we walked through the halls — it was the feeling that joy and nurturing academic excellence were a given at The Agnes Irwin School.” It is this warm community and the balanced atmosphere that led the Roartys to place their trust in the school, both in the decision to enroll their older daughter as well as through their philanthropic support of the Agnes Irwin Fund. Dan commented on how this trust in Agnes Irwin was earned during Maeve’s first few years as an Agnes Irwin student. They knew the school held a strong academic reputation, but it was the faculty members who have instilled an invaluable confidence in their daughter and the opportunity to participate in signature programming that have further cemented their conviction in the value and excellence of an Agnes Irwin education.

These signature programs valued by Maeve and her parents range from developing public speaking skills in the fourth grade Women in Wax Museum to the creative exploration that occurs in writing and performing the Fifth Grade Opera.

The science curriculum, specifically highlighted by the incorporation of robotics, as well as the strong physical education and arts programs, all contribute to the well-rounded students that they encourage their girls to be. They look forward to experiencing all that the Upper School has to offer as Caroline enters her freshman year this fall.

The Roartys’ decision to support the Agnes Irwin Fund’s Area of Greatest Need also comes from a place of trust, and they spoke of their belief in the wisdom of the school’s decisions with regards to programming and plans for the future. With confidence in Dr. Wendy Hill, Head of School, and all of the school’s leadership, they have faith that the school knows best how to direct the annual fund resources in order to continue to serve the school’s mission. LIVING A LEGACY

M

artha Goppelt ’50, longtime teacher and alumna, sat down recently to reminisce about her years at Agnes Irwin and her 27-year tenure as Head of the English Department.

She participated in the Core program in Renaissance literature and history and American studies in the early 1970s, which she recalled as demanding, the equivalent of a college-level course.

Her preparation for teaching began during her early years at Agnes Irwin’s Wynnewood campus, where she encountered Miss Marietta Lent, an English teacher, and Miss Florence Irish, a history teacher, who inspired Martha to continue these studies in her majors of history and literature at Radcliffe College. After a short career in publishing, life eventually led her back to her alma mater, where she was able to share her joy of learning with current students. Martha credits Headmistress Anne S. Lenox, who supported the strong college preparatory liberal arts program that led to the Core Curriculum and fulfilled Martha’s desire to integrate her love of literature and history in her teaching. As our current faculty strive to integrate

teaching across disciplines, Anne Lenox’s idea was ahead of its time.

At 83, Martha, though not as physically active as she once was, is as mentally strong as ever, which is reflected in her thoughtful responses to some probing questions. We asked Martha why she has supported Agnes Irwin so generously over time, often directing her gifts to financial aid for students through the Agnes Irwin Fund. She said that in 1941, when she was in fourth grade and World War II was just beginning, her father, who had served in World War I, volunteered to serve as head of the Nitrogen Unit in Washington, D.C., for a dollar a year. Forgoing a salary left the family without funds for tuition. The headmistress, Anne Bartol, forgave the tuition for Martha and her sister. When he returned to his job as Vice President of the Henry Bower Company at the end of the war, her father paid back every penny to the school. Today, she hopes more students will receive the opportunity for an AIS education even when their families cannot afford it.

Martha’s deep history at and affection for AIS is remarkable, and many alumnae will attest to the impact she had on their lives. Connie Anne Phillips ’83 said, “Martha encouraged me to see life as a molehill instead of a mountain, and that advice led to my success as a publisher at Glamour magazine.”

FINDING YOUR PASSION There are few moments more memorable than when a passion is identified and inspiration takes hold. Jennifer Chappell Paradis, parent of Nicole ’15 and Naomi ’18, witnessed her daughter Nicole’s “Aha Moment” when she discovered her interest in the medical field. After Nicole had the opportunity to shadow a doctor at Bryn Mawr Hospital, Jennifer noticed, “She was ecstatic when she walked through the door and mentioned that her face hurt from smiling.” It was then that Nicole declared to her mother, “I have to help people. That’s why I’m here.

That’s what my life has to be about.”

Many facets of the Agnes Irwin environment foster the growth and development of students’ interests, future career choices, and drive to achieve success and make an impact. Jennifer attributes her daughters’ achievements to the caliber of their classmates at AIS, the connection and commitment of the faculty, and the customized experience for both of her very different daughters. Jennifer said, “AIS is infused with possibility. It provides my daughters with the foundation to create lives that they love. At Agnes Irwin, they are set up to succeed. Being in an environment where everyone is extraordinary brings out the best in you.” Further, when Nicole started looking at colleges, one of her top requirements was an atmosphere where she could build relationships with her professors — a place like Agnes Irwin, where the faculty was invested in her. Jennifer also applauded the school’s recognition of each of her daughters’ unique academic talents. “Naomi’s academic experience has been further enhanced by the school’s mentality regarding the “right setting” — asking first where each girl demonstrates great aptitude and then discovering how AIS can encourage her to grow, explore and achieve.”

It is for all these reasons that Jennifer and her family made the choice to contribute to the Agnes Irwin Fund. Their support runs deep and has many layers. This year, when asked to make a senior gift to the Agnes Irwin Fund, Nicole chose to direct her gift to Technology and Innovation. She wanted her gift to help provide additional resources to something she is deeply passionate about as well as support an area she feels requires consistent enhancement in order to stay current. Most importantly, she wanted to make sure AIS could continue to attract and engage talented fellow students in the field.

John Chappell, Jennifer’s father and grandfather to Nicole and Naomi, allowed his gift to be allocated to the school’s Area of Greatest Need. His gift was made in honor of his granddaughters and to commemorate Nicole’s graduation. There is no doubt that the support of the Chappell-Paradis family, as well as the support of the rest of the Agnes Irwin community, will be used to inspire and foster the passions of countless more AIS students.

Interest from endowed funds are an alternative source of income for financial aid, student services, faculty enrichment and student programs that have established Agnes Irwin as a challenging, exciting and nurturing academic community.

General Endowment Fund

A general endowed fund to which donors may contribute gifts of any size. Annual income from these gifts provides funds that are allocated by the Board of Trustees to areas of need.

J. Mahlon Buck, Jr. and Elia D. Buck Fund

Established in May 2011 through a bequest from the estate of J. Mahlon Buck, Jr., the fund is part of the permanent endowment of the school. Income from this fund is used for general purposes of The Agnes Irwin School.

Elizabeth Ranney Moran Endowment Fund

The Ann Farr Bartol Endowed Fund for Student Support Services

A general fund established with the proceeds of a charitable lead trust set up by Mrs. Moran in 1996. This fund is named by the school in Elizabeth R. Moran’s honor as a tribute to her extraordinary generosity and care for The Agnes Irwin School and to continue in perpetuity her support for the school. Income from the fund is unrestricted and may be used for any purpose in support of The Agnes Irwin School and its faculty, students or programs.

Established in 2000 by Devereaux Rose Bruch ’55 in memory of Headmistress Ann Farr Bartol to fund academic and counseling support services, as needed, to Agnes Irwin students.

Mrs. J. Maxwell Moran Parents’ Council Endowed Fund

Established by the 1998-1999 Parents’ Council, annual income from this fund will provide support to where The Agnes Irwin School needs it most.

The Class of 1951 Endowed Fund

Established in 2001 in honor of their 50th Reunion, The Class of 1951 Endowed Fund was initiated by members of the Class to provide unrestricted support for the needs of The Agnes Irwin School.

Samuel K. Phillips Fund

Endowed by Samuel K. Phillips, a former Agnes Irwin parent, the Samuel K. Phillips Fund provides annual income to the school, which the Trustees may allocate where funds are most needed.

This fund was established to utilize general unrestricted endowed funds received outside of campaign designations.

Anne S. Lenox Fund for Endowment

Established in April 1981, the Anne S. Lenox Fund for Endowment was initiated by alumnae, parents, parents of alumnae, faculty and friends to realize one of Mrs. Lenox’s dreams to strengthen the school by substantially increasing the school’s endowment.

E. Mortimer Newlin Trust

Income from this private charitable trust — established in December 1952 by Mr. Newlin and his wife, Elizabeth Battles Newlin ’21 — provides generous unrestricted support for the school.

Gifts to Endowed Funds for Curriculum and Program Support The AL Philanthropy Fund

The AL Philanthropy Fund was established in 2004 by Elizabeth R. Moran. The purpose of the fund is for girls in grades 9–12 to learn about giving financially to others in a responsible and thoughtful way.

Lorraine Graham Bacon 1915 Peace Education Fund

Established by an anonymous donor in honor of Lorraine Graham Bacon 1915, the Peace Education Fund helps to underwrite programs that teach about peace and mediation.

The Class of 1957 Speakers Series Fund

On the occasion of their 50th Reunion, and in gratitude for the education that prepared them for success in the world, the Class of 1957 established the Class of 1957 Speakers Series Fund. The goal of the fund is to provide speakers whose expertise enhances the Agnes Irwin curriculum.

The Class of 1983 SSP Scholarship Fund

On the occasion of their 25th Reunion, and in celebration of their unity as classmates and broad diversity as individuals, the Class of 1983 established the Class of 1983 SSP Scholarship Fund. The goal of the fund is to provide financial assistance to at least two qualifying students from the 10th or 11th grade each year in order for them to pursue individual exploration and enrichment in off campus Special Studies Programs.

The Class of 1958 Endowment Fund to Support the Special Studies Program

The Class of 1958 Endowment Fund has been established to provide financial assistance to students participating in the Special Studies Program (SSP). Designed for sophomores and juniors, this alternative learning experience encourages students to explore areas of special interest, such as community service, career paths, language, arts or cultural enrichment programs. Gifts to the fund have been given by the Class in honor of Sally Schoettle Randolph ’58, who enthusiastically led SSP trips throughout the country, helping students gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of our world.

Established during the celebration of the school’s 125th Anniversary, this fund provides resources for educational programs that enrich the curriculum, such as lectures, visiting artists, field trips, class travel and other opportunities.

The Endowed Fund for Agnes Irwin Libraries

Established in 1999 by Edward C. and Sarah Albert Eisenhart ’38, this fund provides ongoing support for The Agnes Irwin School Libraries.

Jean Wike Faust 1949 One-Act Plays Fund

Established in 1991, this fund provides support for the performing arts at The Agnes Irwin School, including the Drama Club’s One-Act Plays — a series of plays directed by seniors — and regional theatrical competitions.

The Jean du Pont Shehan ’41 Endowed Fund for Community Service Programs

This fund was established in 2006, in honor of Jean duPont Shehan ’41, to provide students with financial support to participate in offcampus community service programs.

The Susan G. Lea ’76 Endowed Fund for Professional Development

Established in 2007 to honor Susan G. Lea’s long dedication to The Agnes Irwin School and her commitment to elementary education, this fund will support opportunities for Lower School faculty members for professional development, including continuing education and participation in special projects.

The Mathematics Department Chairmanship Fund

Established by alumna Christine Wheeler Patton ’65, this fund provides support for the Chair of the Mathematics Department.

The McCabe Family Fine Arts Department Chairmanship

Given by Anne and Thomas B. McCabe III to honor the role of excellent teaching in the education of their daughters — Christina ’97 and Katherine ’97 — and to demonstrate the importance of endowed funds for faculty support, this fund helps to underwrite the position of Chair of the Fine Arts Department.

The Science Department Chairmanship

Visiting Lecturer Fund

Established in 2005 by the Lubin Family Foundation, the income from this fund will be used to bring speakers to The Agnes Irwin School. The goal of this fund is to stimulate the curiosity of the students and to enhance the experience of Agnes Irwin families and the larger community.

Gifts To Endowed Funds for Faculty Support The Sydney and Loretto Berman English Department Chairmanship

This fund was created by Stephen and Ginny Berman, parents of Lindsey M. Berman ’97, in honor of Stephen’s parents, who “stressed the basics.” Recognizing that a substantial endowment and a strong English Department are among ’the basics’ that sustain schools like Agnes Irwin, the Bermans created this fund to support the Chair of the English Department.

McCabe III — parents of Christina ’97 and Katherine ’97 — this fund provides emergency financial support for a student who, due to unforeseen circumstances, requires scholarship assistance to continue her education at Agnes Irwin.

Established in October 1946 with a bequest from the estate of Lula M. Shepard, this fund provides scholarships for students who require financial assistance to complete any one or more of the last three scholastic years of study at the school.

Debbie Smith 1982 Memorial Trust

The M. Penney Moss Student Assistance Fund

This fund was established in 2005 upon the retirement of Penney Moss to honor her 17 years of dedicated service as Head of The Agnes Irwin School. The fund will be administered by the Head of School to ensure that students in need are afforded the full range of academic, athletic, leadership and community service opportunities offered to Agnes Irwin students.

Established in 1976 in honor of Marjorie Hoffman Higgins ’31 — who taught for several years in the Middle School — this fund provides financial aid to a student in the Middle School.

This scholarship fund was created in 1994 by members of the Hamilton family to honor Elinor Dorrance Hill, Class of 1924.

Elizabeth Huebner 1928 West Hill School Scholarship Fund

This fund was established by The Agnes Irwin School in 2000 to honor Elizabeth “Betty” Huebner, founder of The West Hill School.

It provides tuition assistance to qualifying Agnes Irwin students in grades K–12 with a priority focus on alumnae of The West Hill School.

This fund was established in 2009 in honor of Mrs. Sands’ long dedication to The Agnes Irwin School community and her leadership in promoting the education of girls. This fund will support opportunities for faculty in pursuing professional and leadership development. In addition, the fund will recognize one faculty or staff member each year with the Adele Griffin M. Sands ’37 Leadership Award for outstanding service to The Agnes Irwin School community.

General Scholarship Endowment Fund

An endowed scholarship fund to which donors may contribute gifts of any size. Annual income from these gifts provides funds for scholarships, which are allocated to students by the Director of Admission and Financial Aid where funds are most needed.

The Laurel Society honors all those who establish a planned gift arrangement with The Agnes Irwin School. Planned gifts include bequest intentions, charitable remainder trusts, gift annuities, pooled income funds and other forms of deferred support. The Laurel Society has raised more than $5.3 million in contributions to Agnes Irwin since its inception in 1997.

Laurel Society members make a commitment to Agnes Irwin that guarantees the educational experience they had at Agnes Irwin will be passed on to future generations.
