ADAPTIVE ECREATION
The Grapevine Parks and Recreation’s Club All-Access Day program is an Adaptive Recreation program geared for adults ages 18 and older with special needs. The purpose of this program is to create opportunities for our participants to engage in a variety of activities geared towards social and vocational readiness, health and wellness, independent living, and life skills, along with creating authentic connections with their peers. We integrate these objectives into our curriculum through fun activities, local field trips, volunteer opportunities, and Grapevine community outings. This therapeutic recreation program has a specific curriculum that aims to meet our participants’ physical, social, emotional, and cognitive needs. As a part of our gathering of data for the 2018 Master Plan, residents gave their feedback about a lack of opportunity for the most vulnerable citizens in our community. While the school district and other agencies were providing great services for our children with special needs, our special needs adults were being overlooked. As a result, the Grapevine Parks and Recreation team consulted with a number of agencies, professionals, and service providers within the field and this led to the creation of our own program, Club All-Access. The program is now a thriving community of 25 participants along with a staff team of five (three part-time and two full-time serving dual roles) that are doing life together and growing as engaged members of the community. We aim to reach and connect individuals of varying abilities through the experiences that we create in the program. “We do anything from learning new life skills, or building on existing ones, a fitness regime each class day, and we participate in volunteering and giving back to our community. Participants learn important skills that they can carry on into their everyday lives,” says Michelle Caro, Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor. The Club All-Access program has been very rewarding to build and grow. What once was a new program with five participants is now a max-out program of 25 participants and growing. We base our success on observed growth of the program, feedback from the caregivers, families of our participants, as well as feedback from the participants themselves. “Club All-Access is one of the best programs for adults with challenges that I have been involved in. I am a caregiver for a very special young man who attends the program and also a retired Special Education Teacher of 35 years,” said Debbie Rath. “The staff puts forth 100% effort during every session. The activities and outings give the participants a wonderful opportunity to experience their community to the fullest.” All of our members express a strong sense of belonging, in addition to individual growth and independence. By creating organic opportunities for connection, our
participants form strong bonds with each other. We foster an atmosphere of inclusion, encouragement, understanding, growth, and self-expression. Our members learn from one another and have an authentic sense of place. GO GRAPEVINE MAGAZINE

GO GRAPEVINE MAGAZINE
Do you love the outdoors and contests? We combine both at our Parks for Pollinators month-long event. During the month of September, participants will use the iNaturalist app to find and document pollinator friendly plants and pollinators. It’s a campaign to see who can make the most observations, engage with the most people, and promote pollinator awareness and education. The results not only make an impact for awareness of pollinators nationally and for those that participate, but also helps us know what pollinator and plant species are in our parks and helps us plan for how to protect them and promote biodiversity. We will give prizes to the top three “observers” from our community that use the iNaturalist app! First prize is a one-night stay at Vineyard’s Cabins and Campground, second place is a guided kayak tour on Grapevine Lake, and third place is a gift card to The REC of Grapevine and an annual pass to our lake parks. The City of Grapevine is a proud Bee City USA affiliate, committed to the well-being of pollinators. To support these efforts, Keep Grapevine Beautiful and Grapevine Parks and Recreation are partnering to host an event that kicks off our month-long Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz. The first 25 attendees at the kick-off will receive pollinator attracting seed packets for your yard! The wrap-up event is Saturday, September 25 where we will continue to make observations at an area park.
