The New Path Forward We are well into 2018 and are having a great year so far! Your Chamber Board of Directors has been working diligently behind the scenes on the goals that we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year. One of those goals had to do with a possible expansion/addition to the Chamber building. In mid-April, we sent out a survey to you—our membership—asking a few questions about your involvement with the Chamber as well as your perception of our current building sufficiently meeting the needs of our business community. We received several responses and are very appreciative of those who took a few minutes to give us some thoughts and feedback. We are taking all of the responses and developing a plan to move forward. The overwhelming response was positive toward creating more and/or larger meeting space for our Chamber programs and meetings to be hosted as well as for the use by our business members. There was also recognition of our current building not being an adequate environment for our staff to work efficiently and most productively. Our Chamber has grown significantly over the years and has become a model for many area Chambers. Our facility has been reconfigured and modified to try to accommodate our growth but we feel it is time to make a little more of an investment into our building to maximize our programming potential and offer even more value to our members. We will keep you informed and updated in the coming weeks and months as our plans progress. We are excited to share these plans with you and look forward to adding more value to YOU, our business members! Theresa Mason MIG Realty Grapevine Chamber Chair

Grapevine names new Chief of Police

4 l M A R C H 2018 l

Grapevine’s longest-serving Police Chief, Eddie Salame, has retired after 34 years in law enforcement. Chief Salame joined Grapevine PD in 1991 and was sworn in as Chief in 2005. Salame calls it “beyond satisfying” to reach the pinnacle of his career, and says he takes great pride in having led such an outstanding department. At the Grapevine City Council meeting, City Manager Bruno Rumbelow appointed Assistant Chief Mike Hamlin as the new Police Chief, and city leaders signed off on the plan. Chief Hamlin began his career with Grapevine Police in 2015 after serving 30 years with North Richland Hills Police. He calls it an “honor and privilege” to serve our citizens and visitors, and vows to continue delivering the “highest level of service to our community.” Chief Hamlin was sworn in as Police Chief on April 30, 2018.

Main Street Volunteers Needed for Beer Booths The Great Taste of Grapevine was a tremendous success again this year with over 600 attendees. We are wrapping up the final numbers and we will know that total outcome in the next week. Once again, thank you to all for the support. The Women’s Division is now gearing up for Main Street Fest and we are preparing to work the Beverage Booths on Friday, May 18th. There are only a few spots left, please contact Sharon Smith at for more information. The Women’s Division luncheon is held on the third Tuesday of every month. May’s luncheon will be held at The Courtyard Marriott TownePlace Suites from 11:45 am -1:00 pm. The monthly luncheon is a wonderful place to learn more about what we do and why we do it. We welcome visitors. Contact Casey Maxfield at to reserve your spot. Or you can call me, Alisa Runge, at 817-875-6177. I feel very blessed and privileged to be serving as the Chair of the Women’s Division with such strong women in making a difference in the community. A Note From the CEO Every once in a while, we read something that may be simple, but helps put us back on track with the basic ideals that we grew up with, yet sometimes forget. For me recently, it was this article that was written for the Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives (TCCE) of which I am the immediate past chair. With such a negative environment on the news and other things around us, I hope that this will help you smile yourself, and perhaps share some positivity around you as well. RaDonna Chocolate Labrador and Life By: Steve Ahlenius, President & CEO, McAllen Chamber In March of last year, my wife Jeanette and I made one of those momentous decisions that some days you wonder, “What was I thinking?” We brought home a 1 pound, beautiful-eyed, chocolate Labrador who is every inch a puppy. Annie, who now weighs more than 45 lbs., has been both a joy and a challenge. Now, deeply into this adventure, I have come to a new understanding of the meaning of patience. I also realize I need to change my attitude to adapt to the over-abundance of joy that Annie has about life. Annie is a klutz. She runs into walls, doors, chairs and most of the time, people. She has gotten in her head that running figure eights in our living room as fast as she can is great fun. Jeanette is understanding of “my dog,” but she reminds me I need to control the puppy. I wish it was that easy. One game Annie cannot get enough of is fetch. She seems never to grow tired of it, which just wears me out. As I was watching her one morning, I began to think about how she views life and what we could learn from this seven-month-old puppy. Here are Annie’s five rules of living: 1) Be excited about life. Be excited to be around people and what new adventure could be around the corner. Live today and enjoy it. Life is a gift; not a given. 2) Greet people warmly. Let them know how glad you are to see them and how much you enjoy their company. Annie is excited to see everyone. A warm and friendly greeting goes a long way in connecting with people. 3) Be part of something bigger than yourself. I have learned that dogs are social animals and have to be part of a pack. Annie is happiest when she is around the family. As people, we are challenged to be a part of something bigger than us. Work on a team at work, home or church. Give of yourself. Put someone or someone else’s needs before your own desires. 4) There are going to be messes and mistakes. To date, Annie has eaten our check book and all of our checks, half of a chocolate cake, old cigars and anything left in the trash can. I have found it easier to let go and to forgive her. She doesn’t remember them; why should I? 5) Second chances. We need second chances. You see, Annie is not my first Labrador. With my first lab, I did not take the time to teach or train the dog. I look back at all the things I did wrong, and I know I have a second chance to do things right. We have all made mistakes. We all have missed opportunities and need second chances. Just like God gives us second chances and more, we should give people second chances and much more. Annie is my second chance, and I am thankful for what she is teaching me. Be a part of something great today!
