MARCH, 2018

How is Your 2018 So Far? Last month at our Chamber Luncheon, we were privileged to have Ross Paterson and Hannah Wells from XM Performance speak to us about Managing Millennials. According to Ross, I fall into this “Millennial” category, although, I might debate him on this one! In any case, the presentation was funny and informative, and it certainly put a spin on this topic that I was not expecting! Ross challenged all of us as business owners, leaders and managers to be accountable for the training and performance of the millennial generation. He noted that some of the things we, as leaders, need to do are, first and foremost, know our WHY for our company; secondly, be able to effectively communicate that to our employees along with the roles and responsibilities of that position; and finally, provide timely and specific feedback. If we are not clear with our job descriptions, how can we hold people accountable for the things we believe they should or should not do? And if we do not offer timely and effective feedback, how can we expect performance to change or improve? Ross’ presentation was advertised as “managing millennials” however, his message shifted the focus away from the negative stereotypes of this generation and back toward all of us in the room—the business leaders in our community. His message reminded me of a quote from the book “Start with WHY” by Simon Sinek. Sinek writes “Being a leader requires one thing and one thing only: followers. A follower is someone who volunteers to go where you are going. They choose to go not because they have to, not because they were incentivized to, not because they were threatened to, but because they want to. The question is, why would anyone follow you!” As business leaders in our community, let us all step up to Ross’ challenge! Let us all reflect on what we can do to define our WHY and develop our skills to not only lead millennials but all of those who want to follow!

Must Be Present to Win! Those present at the February Membership Luncheon saw no winner for the “Must Be Present to Win” drawing. The prize is now $450 for March. Each month at the Chamber’s Membership Luncheon, the dollar amount grows as long as the person whose name is called is not in attendance. To win, all you have to do is attend the luncheon and hear your name be called! How easy is that? All Chamber members are eligible to win, thanks to the sponsorship from First Financial Bank, NA.
