Welcome to the John Eastwood Hospice magazine, containing information about our charity and the specialist palliative care services provided here.

Partnership working is very much a focus in the NHS, and the successful relationship between the Hospice Trust and our NHS colleagues is a perfect example.

We are also very fortunate to have established an excellent reputation in the community, and receive terrific support from individuals, businesses and schools who undertake some amazing challenges on our behalf.

Our mission statement clearly states our objectives but in simple terms, whatever our role here we are all committed to doing the very best we can for our patients and their families.

■ The on-going provision of additional resources and higher level services

John Eastwood Hospice Trust Be Prepared It is said that there are two things certain to happen in life; those being death and taxes. Whilst none of us can live forever, we can specify what we want to happen to our property and assets when we die.

A Will is a legal document that ensures your assets; home, money, business, personal belongings are dealt with just as you would like after your death. A Will also allows you to decide who will be in charge of your estate when you die; these people are known as your Executors. Executors collect in everything that you may own and distribute it exactly as you have decided.

If you die without a Will the Government has a laid down set of rules which will automatically apply known as the Intestacy provisions. These provisions set out a ‘pecking order’ as to who will be in charge of your estate and they decide how your assets are shared out between your family. The Intestacy provisions don't always distribute your estate as you would like - the provisions DON'T state that everything you own will pass to your spouse after death. If you have lived with a Partner, regardless of how long, that Partner is not automatically entitled to inherit from you; your assets will pass to your family, leaving your Partner having to take redress through the Courts for financial provision from your estate. Regardless of your relationship with your family,

under the Intestacy provisions they will still be able to benefit from your estate, unless you make a Will directing your assets to your chosen beneficiaries.

A Will not only ensures that your assets pass onto the people that you wish to benefit but it can also be a tool to mitigate inheritance tax; to ensure part of your home is protected from care home fees and to protect children and their inheritance should you have remarried - as said we know that there are only two things that are certain in life...

John Eastwood Hospice Trust Introducing John Wood - Hospice Chaplain

■ John Wood – Hospice Chaplain I have been ordained as a minister for 34 years after my initial work as a civil engineer working on flood protection schemes on the River Severn. My last job was to design a fish pass for salmon to surmount the weir at Shrewsbury. It was constructed after I left and it was only when I saw Johnny Morris with a water bailiff at the weir on a television trip down the Severn, that I found out my design worked!

After 16 years in parish ministry I

took up a full time role as chaplain at King’s Mill Hospital. I really enjoyed working within the hospital environment and working in partnership with staff in caring for patients and their relatives.

On May 1st this year, I began my new role as Hospice Chaplain. I have really enjoyed getting to know the staff and volunteers who work at the hospice, and spending time with Day Care and In-Care patients as well as meeting their friends and families.

People often say to me as their opening words ‘I’m not religious’. I’m pleased to say that for me listening to a person’s story is far more important than talking about religion. If faith is important for the person, then I am very much at home talking on that level. However, what is often the case is that faith becomes a struggle in times of illness both for the patient and for their nearest and dearest. What I like is when they tell me as it is and

not how they think it should be.

I am supported in my work by a team of Chaplaincy volunteers. We are here to care by offering friendship, a listening ear, a shoulder to lean on, counselling and prayer, whichever is most appropriate for the individual. We are available for everyone – staff, volunteers, patients and their friends and families – of any faith, or of none.

Outside work I enjoy being a granddad, with all my three children having their own families. They vary in age from 11 down to newly born. My wife and I live on the edge of Derbyshire and walking in the country with my two collie dogs is a source of great refreshment to me. For some golf is ‘a good walk spoiled’; for me it is a most enjoyably challenging game with my ambition to play better.

Back at the hospice and contrary to common misconceptions, I am not shocked by anything I am told. I have so often found that talking about our troubles is a way of putting down some of the heavy burdens we carry. I am only too glad to support people in whatever way I can.

John Eastwood Hospice Trust A Year In Pictures A selection of the amazing fundraising events that have happened over the past 12 months ■ 28 members and friends of the Old Meeting House Unitarian Church in Stockwell Gate completed a sponsored walk around Vicar Water Country Park and Sherwood Pines to raise money for the John Eastwood Hospice Trust.

■ Gill and Roy Fox celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary earlier this year and asked for donations for the Hospice Trust in lieu of gifts. A cheque for £400 was presented to Vice Chairman David Wilson at our Spring Fair.

The walkers, aged between 5 and 84, raised a total sum of £1,381.70.

This was boosted by Barclays Bank who had agreed to match the money raised by one of the walkers ■ Gill and Roy Fox ■ Mansfield store Local 4 U presented £667.30, which was raised by selling their carrier bags, to trustee Helen Gregory.

■ Paul ‘Paulino’ Cole – Burpee Challenge

■ GK group at Mansfield invited local businesses to have their company logo on the new Ford Transit Custom in March in return for a small fee! We gratefully received the proceeds of £1,093.34

■ Paul ‘Paulinho’ Cole set himself an amazing challenge to do 10,000 burpees during July to raise funds for the Hospice Trust ‘because it was the least I could do’. He raised a magnificent total of £2,540.81.

What is a burpee? Well, for the uninitiated (as most of us at the hospice were), a burpee is a combination of a squat, push up and vertical thrust.

their canteen, staff at Noble Foods, Bilsthorpe, celebrated by holding a Christmas raffle with proceeds being split equally between the John Eastwood Hospice and the Alzheimer’s Society. £500.25 was presented to trustee Martyn Knox.

■ An annual rock concert Kevfest held ■ Sweet Vintage Cupcakes ■ Sweet Vintage Cupcakes. This fantastic cake was auctioned for £75!

■ Brian Hawkins completed the Leeds to Liverpool Walk during September to raise much-needed funds. The walk is 145 miles long and took around 10 days to complete.

■ Noble Foods in memory of a hospice patient was a great success and raised £602.03.

■ Lilian Townsend from Stanton Hill

■ Paul Walters and niece Lauren ■ The Hospice Trust is the chosen charity for both Coxmoor Golf Club’s Captain and Lady Captain. They have already raised a significant sum, £2,000 of which was raised during the Captain’s Away Weekend to Ireland. 5 euro penalties were imposed for misdemeanours, including sand tax, water tax and lost ball tax! Someone even braved the Irish Sea at 7am for sponsorship!

■ Coxmoor Golf Club

■ Brian Hawkins To date, Brian has raised a staggering amount in excess of £60,000 by walking approximately 695 miles along the West Highland Way, Robin Hood’s Way, Hadrian’s Wall, the Cumbrian Way and the Thames Path. All expenses, including accommodation, meals and petrol are met by the walkers, so that every penny raised benefits our charity.

John Eastwood Hospice Trust Tree of Light – 20th Anniversary

sums up the event so beautifully.

Some years ago we created the Tree of Remembrance, which enables sponsors to write a personal message on a tag and attach it to our symbolic tree, which stands in the hospice reception. This has proved very popular with bereaved families.

The Tree of Light began as a fundraising event and has raised over £100,000. (Despite inflation a bulb can still be sponsored for just £10!) However, it has become much more.

It is a way of remembering those we have

■ Indoor Garden In 1993, an article in the hospice newsletter about an unusual fundraising project in South Africa prompted me and fellow members of the Mansfield Lioness Club to do something similar for John Eastwood Hospice.

The project loomed large, especially when we made a list of all the requirements, including a Christmas tree, cable, bulb holders and lots of 25 watt bulbs. Fortunately we had fantastic support from local companies who donated everything we needed, and with the considerable help of volunteers the first Tree of Light was erected and dressed, raising a magnificent £1,840.

The first few years were very challenging as we dealt with unforeseen problems caused by winter weather conditions, and even stolen bulbs. We were often to be found replacing as many bulbs as we could reach in snow and icy conditions!

We held many fundraising events in 1999 so that we could celebrate the Millennium with a complete set of modern lights, which were relatively maintenance free. Then in 2011, a

legacy enabled us to move further with the times and buy state of the art LED lights.

Along the way, the Mansfield Lioness Club disbanded after several years of fundraising for local worthy causes.

Some of us then decided to continue dedicated fundraising for the hospice and became appropriately known as SHINE. The lighting ceremony has changed considerably over the years, developing from a small group of people attending a chaplain-led service at the hospice to a very busy event at the Queen Elizabeth School Hall. The first event was attended

by Denise Nolan who was appearing in pantomime in Mansfield followed by Freddy ‘Parrot Face’ Davies, Sooty and Chris Gascoyne. However when it became apparent that the significance of the tree was being lost because of their presence, we decided to keep the ceremony simple and no longer invite a celebrity guest.

The format changes very little but the highlight for me is a poem written especially for us by Gail Chettle that

John Eastwood Hospice Trust loved and lost at a very special time of year. Indeed the vast majority of donations are in memory of a loved one – the gift you cannot give.

We are very grateful to Collis Engineering who arrange delivery of the tree and erect and dress it for us, and to Altitude Access for the loan of

a cherry picker.

We hope that the tree will remain a symbol of light and hope for many years to come, and that it will continue to bring comfort to us all.

(SHINE is a very small group and we always welcome offers of help, particularly at the lighting ceremony.)

The Christmas Fayre raised the magnificent total of £6,500.50 in 2½ hours! Thanks to the volunteers, everyone who came and to those who donated raffle and tombola prizes, goods to sell and to those who baked scrumptious goodies for our cake stall.

We couldn’t have done it without you.

Celebrating Success 16-year old volunteer Sarah Miles has been named as the overall winner of the Nottinghamshire Outstanding Achievement 4uth Awards for 2013.

65 young people in the county had been nominated and Sarah was one of seven teenagers who were named district winners in the awards.

Sarah was picked as the overall winner in recognition of her caring for her Dad before he died in 2011 and being a carer for her Mum since 2010.

She is also actively involved with the Ashwood Centre in Kirkby-in-Ashfield and was nominated for the award by the Generations Project Co-ordinator there.

We first met Sarah at the hospice when she was a regular visitor along with mum Sharon and brother Mark to visit her dad Peter.

Sadly Peter died but Sarah was so

inspired by the care and compassion shown not just to her Dad but to all the family that she wanted to help us maintain our services, and in the last two years she has been very busy fundraising for both the Hospice Trust and Cancer Relief Macmillan.

Sarah had to wait for her 16th birthday before she could officially join our voluntary staff and work in the hospice, but in the meantime she’s helped at hospice events, donated raffle prizes and made wonderful cakes for us to sell.

I was privileged to be invited to join Sarah at the awards ceremony at County Hall West Bridgford and along with her family felt very proud and delighted when she was announced as overall winner.

Sarah was described by the Chairman of Notts. County Council as a truly inspirational young lady. We think so too!

John Eastwood Hospice Trust What Is Palliative Care?

Palliative care aims to support people with advanced or progressive disease such as cancer, motor-neurone disease, heart failure or other longterm conditions and to maximise quality of life for patients and their families.

If symptoms or needs are complex, then referral to the specialist palliative care service at John Eastwood Hospice may be appropriate.

The Specialist Palliative Care team includes consultants in palliative medicine, clinical nurse specialists,

physio- , occupational and complementary therapists, social worker, chaplain and clinical psychologist.

Our services: ■ In-patient unit: a short stay in our 12-bedded unit providing complex physical, psychological, social, spiritual, end of life or respite needs.

■ Day care facility: 60 places weekly offering assessment and review of patients, enabling the provision of physical, psychological and

spiritual interventions within a context of social interaction and support.

■ Out-patient services for medical consultations, clinical psychology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and complementary therapy.

■ 24 hour telephone advice and support is available for healthcare professionals and patients known to the service.

■ Carer and bereavement support.

The hospice is an active research centre.

John Eastwood Hospice Trust Natwest Audit Team – Community Action For the third year running, a 15 strong Community Action Team from NatWest spent a day at the hospice. They worked extremely hard and enthusiastically in the gardens and tidying the minibus garage. Their perennial motto of ‘no job too big or too small and nothing’s too much trouble’ was very evident as they all got stuck in with great enthusiasm and good humour.

PLACE is a new system for assessing the quality of the patient environment in hospitals, hospices and day treatment centres. The assessments are carried out by teams of local people who look at privacy and dignity, food quality and how meals are served, and general building maintenance.

We are very proud to report that the hospice was in 1st place out of 23 Nottingham Health Care sites with an overall score of 97%.

Hotel Services We have our own kitchens at the hospice so all food is freshly prepared and cooked here every day. Consequently we are able to offer a wide choice of meals and snacks to our patients and cater for individual requirements.

We also have our own dedicated team of housekeepers , ensuring a very high standard of cleanliness throughout.

John Eastwood Hospice Trust How You Can Help The John Eastwood Hospice Trust Please see below a few very easy ways in how you can help us with our fundraising.

Voluntary Staff Our voluntary staff are an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team here at the hospice, supporting professional staff and providing essential services that wouldn’t otherwise be available. They undertake a variety of roles including tea bar, reception, transporting patients from home to day care, gardening, complementary therapies

and clerical support.

We also have teams at our two charity shops in Mansfield.

Our volunteers range in age from 16 to 80+. They come from different backgrounds with different life experiences, and each with their own reason for being here. Whatever their motivation, they share that common link – to do the best they can for our patients and their families.

Nell Gwyn Charity Walk 40 people took part in The Nell Gwyn Charity Walk 2013 from Linby Memorial to the Nell Gwyn (approximately 9 miles) for a fundraising afternoon in aid of the John Eastwood Hospice and in memory of Roy Green, a pub regular and respected member of the local community. A buffet lunch was kindly provided by Dave and Sandra of the Nell Gwyn. A cheque for £2276.24 was presented to Diane Humphreys, Hospice Trust Manager.

John Eastwood Hospice Trust CHAIRMAN’S STATEMENT 2012/13 Once again we report on a year of progress and development, with significant changes along the way.

In May we were delighted to welcome two new trustees, Helen Gregory and Brian Stopford who both bring a wealth of business knowledge and experience to the Board.

We were sorry to say goodbye to trustee Margaret Mackay who retired at our AGM in November having served the maximum term of office of nine years.

Margaret continues to support us in her role of Vice President.

Portland College was the venue for afternoon tea in June to celebrate our 20th anniversary. It was a wonderful occasion shared by staff and volunteers, support group members, trustees and vice presidents. Special guests Mary and Don Brown, two of the founder trustees took everyone on a trip down memory lane as they recalled the early days of the hospice appeal and negotiations with the NHS, which resulted in the wonderful and most successful partnership that continues today.

Long service awards were presented to acknowledge 5, 10, 15 and 20 years service of staff and volunteers. The tremendous commitment of our support groups who have been raising funds in the community for over 25 years was also acknowledged.

Portland College is also the venue for our three annual commemoration services, when we are joined by families and friends of those who have died to remember their loved ones. These services are an important part of the care that is extended to the bereaved.

A special carers’ day was held in June to mark National Carers’ Week. Carers were invited to spend the day at the hospice and had an opportunity to have lunch, do art and craft work, have complementary therapies including aromatherapy massage, reflexology and hand massage, and manicures.

We are very fortunate to have a patient / carer support nurse who works with carers and the bereaved, offering one-toone support and support groups meetings.

‘Transforming Community Services’ was a major reform and had a huge impact on hospice services. Hospice at home ceased to be a separate service in September when it integrated with the Macmillan team to form the Community Specialist Palliative Care Service.

We were sorry to say goodbye to Denise Bircumshaw, our Matron for over 10 years who left to take up a new post at Kings Mill Hospital, to Pat Grundy who retired from her post as Macmillan Nurse held for over 20 years and to Canon Reverend Paul Bentley, Hospice Chaplain who is now Associate Priest at St Lawrence’s Church in Mansfield.

All made a significant contribution to specialist palliative care services in the hospice and in the community.

We wish them all well and look forward to welcoming new Chaplain, Reverend John Wood and Emma Roberts, new Head of Service.

We were delighted to welcome many visitors to our hospice fundraising events.

The Spring Fayre, the Garden Party and the Christmas Fayre raised the magnificent sum of £16,000.

We are proud to continue to acknowledge the wonderful commitment of our voluntary staff. Their hard work and dedication enables us to support hospice services in many different ways.

The concept of volunteering has changed dramatically over the years and increasingly people from all age groups and from all walks of life apply to work with us. I’m delighted to report that we have again welcomed a significant number of young people to our team.

Their time with us may be limited but it proves to be invaluable experience for their future and both staff and patients are delighted to work alongside them.

Fundraisers in the community have again been very active on our behalf and we never cease to be amazed by their efforts on our behalf as they undertake some great and rather unusual challenges.

Our two shops in Mansfield continue to be well supported by customers and those who generously donate good quality clothes, shoes and bric a brac for sale. We are optimistic that the opening of the

new bus station in Mansfield will have a major impact on custom.

Day care is offered to those who would benefit from hospice services without the need for admission. Those attending are collected from home and brought to the hospice by our voluntary drivers in their cars or in the hospice minibus. A typical day might involve a medical or nursing review, complementary therapies and social activities including art and craft work. A programme of outings and entertainment is planned at the beginning of the year and will invariably include trips on the St John’s Ambulance Crusader on the River Trent and pub lunches.

Day care also offers respite to the carers.

As we reflect positively on last year, we face a major challenge in the coming year when the hospice roof will be completely replaced. We shall work closely with the appointed company to ensure minimum disruption for our patients and their visitors whilst work is in progress, and will rely even more on the unfailing generosity of individuals, businesses, schools and organisations in our community to enable us to fund the project as well as meeting our many commitments.

Unfortunately due to the timing of the work, for health and safety reasons we are unable to hold our annual summer Garden Party. Not only is this a major fundraising event for us, but is also an opportunity for us to welcome the community at large into our hospice so they can see our beautiful building and gardens, which are so important to our patients and their families.

The project is due for completion in late autumn.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank my fellow trustees for their continued support and our Hospice Trust staff and volunteers for their hard work and dedication. We continue to work closely with our NHS colleagues to support specialist palliative care services, and although our roles are many and varied, we are all committed to doing all we can to enhance the quality of life for our patients and their families, and look forward to doing so in the coming year.
