Welcome Welcome to the new look Aspire Sussex brochure packed with adult education courses in Worthing, Lancing, Shoreham, Southwick, Storrington and Steyning. Take a look through and choose from our wide range of opportunities to help you to get creative, learn a new skill, prepare yourself for work or just come along to meet like-minded people. Whether you have a general interest in one of our courses or a desire to pursue a new direction sign up with us and try something new. Our students tell us that courses are fun, enable them to do things they never thought possible and have built their confidence. Our aim is to create adult education that can make a difference in your community. Courses in your local area range from Sculpture to Archery. We also have 8 other centres across the County so go online and check out our courses further afield. Our range of one day courses provide variety across West Sussex join up on a Saturday for the same price as last year. We are trying to keep costs down and prices affordable but if these costs stop you joining in let us know, we do try where possible, to support those who cannot afford to pay. • Did you know that we support over 5,800 students each year with our concessions and financial support? • Did you know that as a Charity we aim to ensure that funds are used well to support adults in greatest need to take part in adult education? • Did you know that we supported 728 students to achieve their English and Maths qualifications last year? • Did you know that last year we supported 600 adults with learning difficulties to take part in courses that support their independence? FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions How can I find out more about the course and venue? Ring 0845 6 01 01 61 for information and advice, to request a course information sheet and a venue information sheet with map or visit our website at www.aspiresussex.org.uk
What do the costs shown in the brochure include? The costs shown include tuition fees, exam entry fees and some additional costs. Students will be expected to provide books or materials where appropriate.
What will I be sent when I enrol? A receipt, a Welcome Handbook, a venue map if requested and a course information sheet will be sent to you when you enrol. The Welcome Handbook contains useful information and our terms and conditions and is also available from any of our centres or on the website.
Do I have to pay all the fees at once? Students must agree to pay the full costs of the course but, for courses longer than 10 weeks and costing more than £100, it is possible that payments can be spread over a fixed period of time by direct debit instalments. Please ask for details.
Can I get a refund? As many enrolments are made by phone, post or online our refund policy meets the requirements of the Distance Selling Regulations. Students have the right to cancel their enrolment within 7 working days of receiving confirmation, in which case a full refund will be made. If the course starts within that 7 day period the right to cancel applies up to the day the course starts. Cancellation requests must be made by email to enquiries@aspiresussex.org.uk or letter to The Finance Team, Aspire Sussex Ltd, Ground Floor Unit 10, Donnington Business Park, 85 Birdham Rd, Chichester, PO20 7DU. Refunds can also be issued outside the 7 day period if a written request is received more than 4 weeks before the start of the course. An administrative charge of £10 will be deducted from the refund. After that time only requests for refunds as a result of your ill health will be considered. This must be supported by a certificate from your doctor and an administrative charge of £10 will be deducted from the refund. What happens if there are changes to my course? Although courses usually run as advertised we reserve the right to alter, change or cancel courses as necessary. If occasional sessions have to be postponed due to circumstances beyond our control alternative dates will be arranged and no refunds granted. We also do not grant refunds on the grounds of a change of tutor or venue. If it becomes necessary for us to close or cancel a course refunds will be made with no administrative fee deducted. Will I be accepted on any course I choose? We do reserve the right not to accept an application for enrolment. No students under 16 years of age on the date the course starts will be accepted on an adult education course. In some subjects students need to be assessed to find the most suitable course but you would be advised if you need to come in for an assessment before enrolling.
What do I do if I need extra support to access your courses? Talk to us about your needs when you enrol or at any stage during the course and we will do our best to help. Learner Support funding may be available to help some students who may be discouraged from joining a course for financial reasons. Please ask for details.

FAQs What types of courses are there and what will I have to pay? Different types of courses are subsidised by government funding in various ways and by different amounts. Aspire Sussex reserves the right to increase fees in the future in line with the government’s funding authorities’ guidance. Personal & Community Development courses: for your enjoyment and personal development. Students on a means tested benefit will be entitled to a 70% discount on tuition fees on production of proof of benefit entitlement. Students over 65 and not on a means tested benefit will be entitled to a 10% discount on the tuition fees. Means tested benefits are Jobseekers Allowance/ Council Tax Benefit/Housing Benefit/Pension Guarantee Credit/Income Support/Working Tax Credit (if household income on the award notice is below £20,000)/Employment and Support Allowance (work related activity group) or Universal Credit. Community Plus courses: these courses are planned to meet the needs of particular groups and individuals within the community. They are subsidised at a higher rate and therefore fee levels are lower and no further discounts are available on these courses. SK
Qualification and Work Related Skills Courses (including ESOL): these courses are funded at a higher rate and lead to specific qualifications or work related skills. Please see below for eligibility for discounts or free courses.
Students aged 16-18 years Students will not be required to pay tuition fees or exam costs but there may be additional course costs on some courses.
Students aged 19 years and over for courses up to and including level 2 Students will pay no tuition fees if: • They are on Jobseekers Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance (work related activity group only) or Universal Credit that is due to being unemployed and being required to undertake skills training but they may be required to pay some additional course costs. • They are unemployed and on a state benefit where skills training will help them into work but they may be required to pay some additional course costs.
In addition to the above for students aged 19-23 years These students will also pay no tuition fees if: • They do not already have a full level 2 qualification (e.g. 5 GCSEs grade A*-C, an A level, an NVQ Level 2) and wish to study on an entry level or level 1 course in order to progress to a full level 2 course but they may be required to pay some additional course costs. • They enrol on their first full level 2 or first full level 3 qualification course. They may be required to pay some additional course costs. English and Maths: Most English and Maths courses (including GCSEs for those who do not already hold a GCSE A-C) are free to most students. Students age 65 years and over who do not fit into any of the above categories will be entitled to a 10% discount on the tuition fees.
Students aged 24 years and over studying for a Certificate or Diploma Course at Level 3 and above For the first time, for approved qualification courses starting August 2013 onwards, the government has introduced student loans for people aged 24 years and over who wish to study at level 3 or above. This means that students will no longer have to pay for their course up front if they access a loan. These loans will give financial support for tuition fees charged for these courses, and are administered through the Student Loan Company. Change your story! When Jo’s son was at Primary School, she struggled to understand the maths that the children were learning and a Family Learning course was put on to help the adults. Jo enjoyed this and progressed onto a Level 1 Maths course and then followed it with a Level 2; both of which she passed. She then went on to try Calligraphy and enjoyed this for three years finding that working alongside like minded adults more favourable than her school days. The opportunity arose for Jo to enrol on a Maths GCSE and she is now close to completion and taking the exam. She has found her tutors to be both helpful and supportive.
