Each season offers its own unique beauty, from the Thames River to the sparkling lights of winter in our historic downtown.

No visit is complete without exploring our rich heritage and stunning limestone architecture or enjoying the flavors of our local eateries. Art lovers will find inspiration at the Station Gallery, while outdoor enthusiasts can walk or bike our scenic trails, paddle along Trout Creek, or take a refreshing dip in Canada’s largest freshwater swimming pool—the St. Marys Quarry.

We are especially proud to be home to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, a national treasure that celebrates Canada’s baseball legacy and welcomes fans from across the country. A Brief History of St. Marys

Nestled at the confluence of the Thames River and Trout Creek, St. Marys, often affectionately known as “The Stonetown”, was first surveyed by the Canada Company in 1839. For centuries prior, it was part of the summer hunting routes of the Neutral and Haudenosaunee, and subsequently the Anishinaabe peoples. Although permanent settlements were closer to the Great Lakes, and further south along the Thames River, archaeological evidence suggests that there were summer encampments along the riverbanks near the current town limits.

Settlement began in earnest in the 1840s when the Canada Company sold land to Thomas and James Ingersoll, catalyzing development through mill construction and encouragement of local commerce. Railway expansion in the 1850s accelerated growth. The Grand Trunk Railway constructed two iconic viaducts that still stand today, the London Bridge over Trout Creek and the Sarnia Bridge over the Thames River, establishing St. Marys as a key link in Western Ontario’s rail network.

By 1864, St. Marys was incorporated as a town with approximately 3,000 residents. The Town bustled as a regional hub for grain, produce, and livestock, reflecting the community’s agricultural strength. The late 19th century saw major civic enhancements, including the construction of the current Town Hall, public bridges, new churches, and municipal waterworks.

The 20th century brought both innovation and challenge. The securement of Carnegie funding enabled the construction of a new public library, and the St. Marys Cement Company began operations in 1912, establishing a major industrial legacy. The world wars deeply affected the town, claiming local lives and transforming the workforce. During the Second World War Maxwell & Sons Company of St. Marys produced 2.5 million grenades, relying on many female workers to

replace male employees who were serving in the Armed Forces. Late-century revitalization efforts included the creation of the Grand Trunk Trail and the arrival of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1993. Through decades of adaptation, St. Marys has preserved its unique limestone heritage while fostering a vibrant civic and cultural identity.

Visitors to St. Marys are warmly invited to explore the community’s remarkable limestone architecture and picturesque streetscapes. Walking through the downtown Heritage Conservation District, it is not hard to imagine how this streetscape would have looked 150 years ago. We invite you to take your time, immerse yourself in our heritage, and experience firsthand why St. Marys continues to charm generations of residents and guests alike.

St. Marys and area offers three unique, picturesque and challenging golf courses to intrigue players of all abilities.

The St. Marys Golf & Country Club, founded in 1931, is a par-72 that stretches out to 6,567 yards from the back tees.

“Located along the beautiful Thames River, the course prides itself on its spectacular views highlighted by incredible rolling hills, natural creeks and mature trees. The challenging, yet forgiving, course layout welcomes all types of players, from beginners to avid golfers,” says Brandon De Groote, Director of Golf Operations. The Club also offers a first-class restaurant, Social Thirty-One, and an inviting patio.

Science Hill Country Club, opened in 1976, remains one of Southwestern Ontario’s best-kept secrets. Located in the countryside just a few minutes northwest of St. Marys on Road 137, Science Hill is a par-70 course measuring 5,900 yards from the tips. New ownership

Just a short drive from St. Marys, River Valley Golf & Country Club is located on a very scenic and undulating parcel of land which is popular for all seasons – in the warm months as a golf course and in the winter months as a tube slide venue. Co-owner/operator David Tkachuk says of the par-65, 4,734 yard course, “The rolling hills and valleys offer beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. The golf course has lots of elevation that will challenge all playing levels.” River Valley has a Grand Hall for banquets, a restaurant, and spacious outdoor deck area.

This October, discover a place where inspiration takes root and creativity blooms. The St. Marys Creative Retreat (Oct 20-22, 2026) is a three-day soul-nourishing experience designed for people who feel the quiet pull to return to their creativity.

Nestled in the heart of our historic ‘Stonetown,’ this immersive retreat invites you to reconnect with your creative essence against a backdrop of iconic limestone architecture, tranquil rivers and waterfalls. Guided by our mission to “Create, Connect, and Renew,” the retreat transforms the entire downtown heritage district into a living studio. Participants will wander through our unhurried town, attending expert-led workshops hosted in charming downtown businesses and inspirational plenary sessions at the Town Hall Auditorium and historic churches.

Select 4 small-group workshops from a wide variety offered in mediums such as painting (watercolour, acrylics and encaustic), pottery, fibre arts

(knitting, weaving, needle-felting, hand-quilting, embroidery, slow stich), printmaking, creative writing, photography, and mixed media. All experience levels are welcome, and all materials are included.

Beyond the classrooms, enjoy artist-led nature walks and a curated community ‘scavenger hunt’ designed to immerse you in the local smalltown culture and encourage mindful observation. Evenings offer opportunities to join a community dinner, explore local pubs, and take in a local theatre performance.

Come experience the transformative power of creativity in a community that celebrates it every day. Join us to learn a new skill, reconnect with your creative spirit, or simply recharge in the unique beauty of St. Marys. Space is limited to keep the experience intimate.

Once spots are filled, workshop registrations will close.

Reserve your spot and find full details at StMarysCreativeRetreat.ca

Piecemakers Quilt Show

Stitching together tradition and creativity

Quilting enthusiasts, art lovers, and community members alike should mark their calendars as the Huron Perth and Stonetowne Quilt Guilds present the highly anticipated Piecemakers Quilt Show, taking place over three days, April 23-25, 2026 at the Pyramid Recreation Centre, 317 James St South, St Marys Ontario.

Established in 1994, the show celebrates the timeless art of quilting while showcasing the innovation and passion of today’s quiltmakers. The upcoming show promises to bring together a stunning array of traditional patterns, modern designs, and everything in between; with over 300 quilts and other quilted items crafted by our Quilt Guild members, ranging from hand-stitched heirlooms to contemporary textile art. There’s something magical about seeing hundreds of hours of work stitched into a single quilt and each piece tells a story—about the maker, the fabric, and the tradition it carries forward. Visitors can expect to see a wide variety of styles, including patchwork, appliqué, paper piecing, plus national award winning quilts from the recent Canadian National Juried Show at Quilt Canada 2025 in Toronto. The Guild members are an accomplished group with exceptional talent.

In addition to the quilt exhibit, the show will include a Merchant’s Mall, a Boutique, and a Luncheon/Tea Room. Come for the day and take some time to explore the beautiful town of St Marys. In addition to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame, St Marys boasts beautiful walking and hiking trails that take in the lovely rural landscape, as well as a vibrant main street where you might also spot some heirloom quilts in downtown store windows.

Whether you’re a seasoned quilter, a beginner, or simply curious, this show is a wonderful opportunity to be inspired. Organizers hope people walk away not just with admiration, but with ideas and a deeper appreciation for the craft. 2026 Event Details:

• April 23 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

• Pyramid Recreation Centre -317 James St South St Marys, Ontario

• $10 Admission, Cash only

Local St Marys quilters (from left) Wendy Anderson, Joan Robinson and Darlene Roger recently won National Awards At the 2025 Quilt Canada National Juried Show in Toronto. Their award winning quilts will be on display at the 2026 Piecemakers Quilt Show April 23-25 at the Pyramid Recreation Centre in St Marys.
