The Town of St. Marys acknowledges that it is located on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, and Ojibway/Chippewa peoples. This area is within the boundaries covered by Treaty 29, known as the Huron Tract Purchase, and is protected by the Dish With One Spoon wampum agreement. Today, many Indigenous peoples continue to call this land home and act as its stewards. We are grateful to have the opportunity to live and work on this territory.

History of St. Marys

Nestled along the banks of the Thames River, St. Marys boasts a rich and vibrant history that dates back to the mid-19th century. Known as “The Stonetown” for its limestone architecture, the town’s early days were marked by rapid growth and development. European settlers arrived in St. Marys in the 1840s; St. Marys was incorporated into a town in 1863.

The arrival of the Grand Trunk Railway in the late 1850s spurred growth and soon St. Marys became a centre for milling, graintrading and the manufacture of agriculture-related products. The railway connected the town to the rest of the world and framed the local landscape with its two large trestle bridges on limestone pillars across the waterways.

Prominent among its pioneers were the Eatons, a family whose entrepreneurial spirit helped shape the local economy. Timothy Eaton, who later founded the iconic Eaton’s department store, kicked off his illustrious career in retail here in St. Marys and nearby Kirkton.

Adding to the town’s history is the remarkable Kathleen Rice, an adventurous spirit who made significant contributions to the town’s cultural and social landscape. A teacher and prospector, Rice’s daring expeditions in northern Canada left an indelible mark, inspiring future generations with tales of resilience and exploration.

St. Marys’ historical charm is further exemplified by its wellpreserved heritage buildings, museums, and cultural festivals, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts.

The community’s rich history is preserved and promoted by the St. Marys Museum & Archives who continue to tell the stories of the town through its exhibitions, special events and programs.

In the Spring, we’re looking into the power of love to overcome obstacles and the transformative journey of self-discovery with our production of Over the River and Through the Woods. Or.. how do you deal with your own life when two sets of grandparents love?

Performances begin April 24 to May 10, 2025

“Over the River and Through the Woods” is a heartwarming comedy about family, love, and the challenges of change and moving on. The play follows Nick, a single Italian-American man in his late 20s- early 30s, who faces pressure from his loving but overbearing grandparents to find a girlfriend and settle down. When he announces that he’s been offered a dream job on the other side of the country, his grandparents go to great lengths to convince him to stay, including setting him up on a series of blind dates with eligible young women. As Nick navigates the ups and downs of family dynamics and romantic relationships, he learns valuable lessons about the importance of love, sacrifice, and the enduring bonds of family.

Our Fall brings a Norm Foster classic: Hilda’s Yard. A life view from a wife and husband, a new TV, empty nester happiness, then, literally, your two grown-up kids fall back, over the fence, into your yard, your new life, with issues. Sound familiar? We think so.

Performances begin October 15 to November 2, 2025

“Hilda’s Yard” is a comedic play by Canadian playwright Norm Foster. Set in the 1950s, the play follows the Fluck family as they navigate the challenges of everyday life. When their two adult children unexpectedly move back home, Hilda and Sam Fluck are dealing with a full house again. As the family members come to terms with their new living arrangements, they must confront their struggles and relationships. Filled with humour and heart and in typical Norm Foster form, ‘Hilda’s Yard’ explores the complexities of family dynamics and the enduring bonds that hold them together.

The beauty of St. Marys’ trails and waterways

One of the best ways to experience St. Marys like a local is to enjoy the trails and waterways that meander through the town limits.

Trails

The 3.2 km Grand Trunk Trail, created from the old railway line of the same name, extends from east to west, with the panoramic highlight of the trip occurring atop the Sarnia Bridge where travelers often stop for a breather and admire the picturesque downtown to the south or the peaceful countryside to the north.

The Riverview Walkway, measuring 2.4 km, begins in the centre of town and follows the Thames River southward to the active racket courts and swimming quarry.

The Loop Trail, hitting all corners of St. Marys, is a full 13 km roundtrip trail that

includes the Grand Trunk Trail, Riverview Walkway, as well as other scenic parts of town.

Wherever you walk along St. Marys’ trails, be prepared for friendly greetings or nods from the locals. It’s our small-town way.

Waterways

A unique way to see St. Marys is by kayak, and it’s never been easier thanks to the Yak Shack (kayak loan program) for more information visit discoverstmarys. ca/yakshack, along with the newly installed accessible dock in Milt Dunnell Field.

As you glide down the Thames River or Trout Creek, enjoy the view of the Stonetown’s trademark limestone architecture, pass underneath iconic bridges, and savour nature in its purest form.

Like the trails, the waterways are another place where the locals will make you feel more than welcome. Expect a friendly wave as you pass them by.

MARYS GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB / SOCIAL THIRTY-ONE / LITTLE BIG CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY PHOTO)

St. Marys and area offers three unique, picturesque and challenging golf courses to intrigue players of all abilities.

The St. Marys Golf & Country Club, founded in 1931, is a par-72 that stretches out to 6,567 yards from the back tees.

“Located along the beautiful Thames River, the course prides itself on its spectacular views highlighted by incredible rolling hills, natural creeks and mature trees. The challenging, yet forgiving, course layout welcomes all types of players, from beginners to avid golfers,” says Brandon De Groote, Director of Golf Operations. The Club also offers a first-class restaurant, Social Thirty-One, and an inviting patio. Weddings are often held on the picturesque grounds with receptions in one of the facilities’ banquet halls.

Science Hill Country Club, opened in 1976, remains one of Southwestern Ontario’s best-kept secrets. Located in the countryside just a few minutes

northwest of St. Marys on Road 137, Science Hill is a par-70 course measuring 5,900 yards from the tips. New ownership has made many improvements, “including the updated Taps On The Thames Restaurant at the clubhouse. From lunch, casual dining, live entertainment on the patio, or special occasion bookings, Taps has it all. Call for reservations or come in and enjoy one of the nicest patios in the area.

Just a short drive from St. Marys, River Valley Golf & Country Club is located on a very scenic and undulating parcel of land which is popular for all seasons – in the warm months as a golf course and in the winter months as a tube slide venue. Co-owner/operator David Tkachuk says of the par-65, 4,734 yard course, “The rolling hills and valleys offer beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. The golf course has lots of elevation that will challenge all playing levels.” River Valley has a Grand Hall for banquets, a restaurant, and spacious outdoor deck area.

The St. Marys Junior B Lincolns play home games at our multi-purpose active-living facility known as the Pyramid Recreation Centre. In 2024 they celebrated with the Bill Weir Trophy (Western Conference champions) while in 2025 they
GOJHL’s top prize, the Sutherland Cup.
