Revised ‘Silos of Waterford’ gets warm reception LUKE EDWARDS Grant Haven Media

A new, reduced plan for a West Church Street property in Waterford is responding to market conditions and housing needs in Norfolk, its proponents say.

It received a mostly positive response from Norfolk councillors during a July 7 public hearings meeting.

A proposal for the ‘Silos of Waterford’ was previously approved by this term of council back in 2023.

However, earlier this month the proponents came back with a new plan that eliminates two eight-storey mid-rise buildings and converts the development to almost exclusively single-storey townhouses that will be purpose-built rentals.

“Is this a more sellable solution, do you think?”

Coun. Alan Duthie asked consultant John Vallee after he presented the revised proposal.

“I do think in the current market conditions it is,” Vallee responded.

“We’re recognizing one of the challenges your housing authority has is a real lack of rental units and this is a response to that.”

The new proposal cuts the unit total by more than half, from the previously approved 255 units to 118 units. The townhouses will range from 600 to 1,000 square feet in size. Some will have garages and othCONTINUED ON PAGE 3

A distinguished Canadian cyclist, born in 1933 and raised in La Salette, Murphy competed in both track and road cycling, rising to fame in the 1950s and 60s. He went on to win multiple Canadian titles.

He competed in the 1956 Olympic Games and 1958 Commonwealth Games and later competed professionally in Europe.

The full 2024-2025 complement of John Axford, Sean Jamieson, David Howard, Walter Krawec and Jim Turkiewicz and Murphy are profiled in today’s Advocate on Pages 17 and 18.

Attendance for the 2026 induction ceremony – recognizing the 2024-25 group was great, said Montgomery.

“We were just so thankful that so many could be there. John Axford was nominated a few years ago and couldn’t come to the last induction, so we were really glad that he could come to this one,” said Montgomery, who remembers coaching Axford’s twin sisters in Norfolk Youth Basketball.

“It’s really nice to see the families get together and be proud of each other. I also coached Sean Jamieson in soccer when he was young, so I said, ‘Oh, he liked baseball better than soccer…’”

There was big news in Port Dover only a few days earlier when the Axford, a Port Dover baseball grad, and the Toronto Blue Jays announced a major donation.

“The Toronto Blue Jays offered him $50,000 (through Jays Care), and he is sending it to Port Dover Minor Basebal,” said Montgomery. “It’s wonderful – I believe he lives in Burlington now and is also involved in baseball teams there, but he wanted to give back to his home community. It was very nice.”

This year’s inductees represent a diverse group of sports – from baseball to cycling, from rowing to hockey and squash.

“I lived in Waterford for more than 25 years… and Jim, Walter and Sean are all from Waterford, so it was just really nice to see that. It was a really nice evening – it all went well – and it’s just nice to see the variety of sports and talent of so many people in our community. It’s wonderful.

“Walter went to Waterford High School and he was involved in track and field.

He excelled in every sport there was. And some of his friends from Waterford were there – it was just great.”

“We don’t nominate people, the community will nominate somebody, and there is a selection process,” said Montgomery.

“But we need people to nominate athletes – by family members or whoever they know from the community – to the sports hall.

“Sometimes they are people from the community that we don’t know they’ve accomplished so much.”

Premier, “Get under the sink” and see what’s wrong Haldimand-Norfolk

Bobbi Ann Brady As I write this July 16th column, unfortunately, 4,000 community and social services workers continue political action and have been on strike since May 25th.

The workers are asking for increased provincial funding for their services and to catch up on retroactive wages held down under Bill 124. In response, the Ford government has told me and the public they are spending “historic” amounts on healthcare, education, and the rest of the ministries. You’ll get no argument from me about this government spending previously unparalleled amounts of money, but there seems to be some kind of blockage stopping the money from getting to the root of the problems.

Pondering their historic spending rhetoric, I recently reread the Minister of Finance Peter Bethlenfalvy’s foreword to his 2026 Ontario Budget. This quote sums up nicely the spirit of the document, “A strong, resilient economy helps support the world-class social services that families in Ontario count on. We continue to invest in our social services to further improve them so they can deliver on standards that the people of Ontario deserve.” There’s a lot to like in those words.

Coincidentally, soon after reading the Minister’s foreword, I was assessing an annoying blockage in my kitchen sink. I used a chemical drain cleaner, but it was still not draining properly. At that point, I knew it was time for me to get on my hands and knees and look under the sink to find the root of the problem. Eventually, it worked. The Restoring small-town journalism, one community at a time!

drain cleared after my examination and effort.

Then it occurred to me, perhaps this is what Premier Ford and his ministers need to do. If that record funding isn’t fixing the problems plaguing government services across the board, maybe it’s time they figuratively “get under the sink” and see what’s causing the blockage in the pipeline. They have the professionals in the government to do detailed investigation and analysis. And maybe they need to listen better to those on the front lines.

I’m going to shift gears a bit. Speaking of pipelines, credit where credit’s due, kudos to Premier Ford for having the foresight to propose possible solutions to our energy issues with his and Premier Danielle Smith’s conceptual 3,300 km oil pipeline from Western Canada to refineries in Southern Ontario. It would run from Hardisty, Alberta, moving past Regina and Winnipeg, terminating in Sarnia.

Estimates are it would transport 500,000 to 800,000 barrels per day. I think this would give us an energy source, jobs, and prosperity without having to rely so much on our U.S. neighbours.

In his justified zeal to secure long-term energy solutions, I urge Premier Ford to use that same foresight regarding the Nanticoke Industrial Park. It is the perfect location for a major energy project. It’s tough to find anywhere as well positioned to support future energy generation. It’s pretty much plug and play considering the Nanticoke site retains significant infrastructure left behind from the former Ontario Power Generation facility. Most other locations would have to build from nothing. Think of the skilled trades jobs an energy project at Nanticoke would create while augmenting Ontario’s future energy needs.

Amazing the results you can get looking at a problem from a different angle, including getting under the kitchen sink. I will continue to encourage the government to have a closer look at its operations because our services and taxes depend upon it.

STRONG SERVICES CAN’T BE BUILT ON WEAK FOUNDATIONS By the time this column is published - barring any new developments - approximately 4,000 community and social services workers will have been on strike for about eight full weeks having commenced job action on May 25th.

The workers are represented by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), and they are asking for increased provincial funding for their services and to catch up on retroactive wages held down under Bill 124. Bill 124 capped public sector wage increases at one per cent a year and was found to be unconstitutional, and was subsequently repealed. It was unconstitutional, divisive, and repealed in February 2024, but its echo reverberates to this very day.

So, now we sit with eight weeks of service disruptions experienced by legions of children, families, and vulnerable Ontarians lacking key supports. But before it got to this point, on May 13th, I was the first out of the gate standing in the Legislative Assembly asking Premier Ford for insight into his plan to avert job action by listening to social service workers and acting. The Minister of Children, Community, and Social Services, Michael Parsa, fielded my question and touted the government’s record spending in the developmental services sector, more on that shortly.

Why should we care? There’s an old saying about not missing something until it’s gone. When I first started ringing the alarm bells at Queen’s Park, many in our community asked me what workers in community services, including developmental services, actually do. In response, I’ll paraphrase what I recently publicly stated: they provide dignity, independence, opportunity, hope, and help people live fuller, richer, more meaningful lives in our communities. They provide behavioural supports, medication management, crisis intervention, transportation, advocacy,

and relationships built over years with the people they support. Because their work often happens quietly, behind the scenes, it is too easy for governments - and sometimes even the public - to overlook it. But when it’s gone, it is clearly understood and missed by many.

More on the government’s supposed “record spending:” Minister Parsa often speaks of hundreds of millions of dollars flowing into the sector. My question to him is where did all the money go? I question whether these investments are reaching the front lines, why are agencies still struggling to recruit? Why are experienced workers leaving for better-paying jobs? Why are families still facing waitlists? And many workers tell me they still can’t make ends meet doing work that is absolutely essential and currently missed by thousands.

Minister Parsa and his predecessors have heard for years about long waitlists, crushing caseloads, staff burnout, and chronic underfunding. And I’ve heard for years as a political staffer and as your MPP about the same thing. I hope this government does the right thing. It’s a no-brainer for me.

If we truly believe every person deserves to live with dignity and inclusion, then we must also believe that the people providing those supports deserve compensation reflecting their skills, their commitment, and the enormous responsibility they carry. We need to protect the future of Ontario developmental services.

As the lone true Independent MPP in Ontario, you gave me the freedom to speak out against any party machine if I feel it is just and in the best interests of Haldimand-Norfolk. And I will continue doing that until this is settled.

Meanwhile, I convey my gratitude to community services workers for caring for some of our most vulnerable citizens. Thank you for showing up, even when it’s hard.

Thank you for being the roots that hold this community together.

Norfolk, Brant, Haldimand, Brantford communities come together to raise record $206,000 The generosity of local businesses, volunteers, shoppers and community partners has resulted in a record-breaking $206,000 raised through United Way Golden Horseshoe's annual Warehouse Sale, creating more support for local programs and services across Norfolk, Haldimand, Brant and Brantford.

This year's Warehouse Sale was the most successful in recent history, surpassing last year's fundraising total by more than $50,000. More than 2,000 shoppers, 100 volunteers, and over 20 local sponsors and product donors came together to transform donated merchandise into lasting community impact.

Community partners, sponsors, product donors and volunteers gathered July 10th for a special cheque presentation celebrating the achievement and recognizing everyone who helped make this year's event a success.

Every year, the Warehouse Sale turns donated products into funding that stays local. Businesses contribute new merchandise, volunteers dedicate hundreds of hours sorting, organizing and running the sale, and community members shop knowing every purchase helps strengthen programs that support local individuals and families.

"This sale is a great example of what makes our community special. Neighbours showing up for neighbours," said Vaseem Baig, Board Member, United Way Golden Horseshoe, in a media release. "Raising $206,000 through donated goods and volunteer hours is a powerful reminder that real impact starts at the local level. As a Board member who was part of both the individual organization and now the newly joined organization, it has been inspiring to see how an effort like this in Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk connects to the bigger picture of what we're building to-

gether across the entire Golden Horseshoe region."

It seems in this day and age that so many of us have been touched by cancer or knows someone who has been.

It’s not a fact to be proud of or happy with, it’s just a fact. On a personal level we, as a family, have been affected by this horrible disease and do not wish it on anyone.

I’m happy to say that we have a survivor in our family - Makinley - and she is our ‘spitfire.’

Mak, as we call her, was born in 2018 with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma and the doctors and staff at McMaster Hospital did what they do best and were able to remove the tumor and put her on the road to recovery.

In 2019, she and her family - mom Brooke, dad Eric, siblings Charlotte and Lily - had the opportunity to attend Camp Trillium for the first time and they had a blast. It gave the older siblings a chance to have fun, laugh and smile like kids do… and Mom and Dad too of course. They have attended several camps since then and always come away with great memories.

Now called Campfire Circle, the facility continues to serve those in the cancer community. It has put smiles on the faces of lit-

erally thousands of children over the years.

On June 13, the Waterford-area camp held an Open House and the turnout was amazing. So many campers, family members, supporters, volunteers and staff were on hand to greet visitors, conduct tours and run events for the kids. There were smiles galore that day!

As I toured the Camp, I watched as children joined the activities, went fishing, hugged old friends and smiled… a lot!

The mission for the day was accomplished.

There was nothing but sunshine that day as everybody walked the grounds, chatted, and enjoyed the million-dollar views of Rainbow Lake. Truly, they are million-dollar views!

After a great ‘camp’ lunch, a short program was presented and some of the families shared their stories with us. Each had their own memories and experiences but the consensus was always the same Campfire Circle has been there for them and lifted their spirits when needed, when times were toughest. Fun was the order of the day and the laughter and smiles on the faces of the kids were just what the doctor ordered.

I met and spoke with several visitors that day and the comments were nothing but positive. It gives the families somewhere to

go at a time when they can’t go anywhere and they are able to form lifelong friendships.

Some gathered on the porch outside the Main Hall, sharing their memories and thoughts, while other visitors checked out the cabins, the actual ‘campfire circle,’ and the fishing dock. It was a great day for fishing as we watched several children reel in their catches – all thrown back in after bragging pics were taken. Way to go Lily!

What a catch.

Campfire Circle offers several yearround medically supported camps and families can leave their cares and worries behind them. It’s a time for the children to form new friendships and build lasting memories. There’s no better prescription than that.

group of what some might call ‘unlikely’ visitors. Members of the Cerebus Riding Club (Kitchener) were on hand once again to show their support.

Campfire Circle, a merger of Camp Trillium Rainbow Lake and Camp Oochigeas, has been there since 1983-84 for kids with cancer and their families. They truly believe that ‘camp restores a sense of normalcy, new found strength and hope’. What I saw that day were dozens of happy, smiling, carefree children just having fun like all kids should.

Community support is always welcome and appreciated. Donations, however big or small, can make a difference. Thank you to organizers and volunteers that made that day so special. Kids could be kids and forget their illness for a few hours. It was smiles everywhere! If you can give… give what you can!

OTF expands opportunities to connect with nature MPP Bobbi Ann Brady met with representatives from the Long Point Biosphere Region, Birds Canada, and the Long Point Basin Land Trust on June 24 to hear more about a $96,400 Seed grant awarded to Long Point Biosphere from the provincial government's Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF).

The grant was used to launch a new regional initiative focused on expanding nature-based programming and strengthening collaboration among conservation organizations. The project will connect people with nature across Norfolk County.

“OTF funding to fuel this healthy collaboration between these important organizations is a win for those, like me, who love nature and wish to see it protected and enjoyed by the public,” said Bobbi Ann Brady, MPP for Haldimand-Norfolk in a media release. “I can tell you from experience, when those with shared convictions team up, there is strength in numbers.”

The Long Point Biosphere Region, Birds Canada, and the Long Point Basin Land Trust are serving as the founding organizations of this collaborative, building on existing programs and expertise to strengthen

and expand opportunities for people to engage, explore, and conserve nature. Guided by a steering committee and supported by a dedicated Project Coordinator, the project includes coordinated outreach and educational opportunities, shared training resources for staff and volunteers, and the development of a long-term sustainability model.

"By bringing together the strengths of the three founding organizations, we can create more opportunities for residents and visitors to discover the region's remarkable biodiversity and connect with nature," said Janet Dassinger, Executive Director of the Long Point Biosphere Region.

Delhi Legion celebrates 100 years in September

The Royal Canadian Legion is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2026, along with the Legion’s Ladies Auxiliary.

In Delhi, RLC Branch 125 and its Ladies Auxiliary will be hosting a special Wine & Cheese Open House in September to mark the occasion.

“It will be held during Legion Week, the third week of September,” said Branch 125’s Trudy Ingraham. “We’ll kick off the week with music on the Sunday, right straight through to the Saturday. And the Legion will open and selling memorabilia that week. The Wine & Cheese will be on the Friday night.”

Membership has been on the rise, both in 2025 and 2026.

“The free membership this year, a national program, has been instrumental in that.”

It’s been a busy summer for Branch 125 – just a few weeks ago (the second weekend in June) they hosted their annual Family Day Festival, a community appreciation event with games (including kids fish pond), bake sale, vendors, face painting, silent auction, bouncy castle, food trucks and live music on the street.

“It was a good day,” Ingraham smiled.

“We do this every year and we’re continuing on with it because it’s such a huge success.”

Delhi’s RLC Branch 125 will be celebrating its branch 100th anniversary in 2028.

“We’re working toward a big celebration for that,” said Ingraham.

And they are still vital to the community.

“The Legion is extremely important. On a weekly basis we’ve got Senior Supports coming in, doing exercises, we’ve got senior meals, we support all of our veterans.

We currently have 18 local veterans that are served by this Legion within Delhi.

“It’s a place for you to come together. It’s about community. It’s about giving back to the community and supporting the community in the best way that we can.”

“The Ladies Auxiliary is very, very important. And the LA play an important part in all Legions – a lot of the Legions attribute some of their success to the fact that

Local reflections on international issues LEAH BAUER Advocate Contributor

Local author and activist Deborah Ellis is originally from Paris, Ont., but has called Norfolk County her home for a number of years. Her dream was always to be a writer, and that dream combined with her passion for human rights, has led her through a continuously interesting and inspiring career.

While Ellis was born in Southwestern Ontario, the subjects of her novels come from all around the world. One of the defining works of her career, The Breadwinner, features the fictional story of an 11-year-old girl living in Kabul, Afghanistan. Ellis’s novels have demonstrated hardships faced by young people in places such as Bolivia, Guyana, Palestine, India, and across Canada.

“I have been lucky enough to do both fiction and non-fiction,” said Ellis. “Generally, I cover war, of one kind or another.”

Her commitment to highlighting the stories of people living in conflict areas, and in difficult situations, has allowed her to meet people from all over the world.

“For the books set in Afghanistan, I spent time in the refugee camps in Pakistan, meeting with all kinds of people, and then I was later able to actually go into Afghanistan.”

Highlighting the voices of those affected by global issues is very important to Ellis.

“We do not often get to hear from people in these circumstances about what it is like on a day-to-day basis to live in this situation. Most of the people who are killed or are harmed in war are civilians, not combatants. A lot of the people who are killed in war now have nothing to do with it, such as children or families."

Ellis believes a humanized perspective on those affected by war should be at the

forefront of conversations about international conflict.

“We need to be aware of all aspects of war, because when we are saying ‘let’s go to war with this country over here,’ we are also saying ‘let’s go kill these families over here.’”

The subjects of Ellis's writing are often difficult and confronting. In addition to this, her books are mainly written for a young adult audience. This juxtaposition is not lost on Ellis who said, “I generally write for young people, and they get the sense of there being a lot of questions that need to be asked. If the books I write can prompt them to ask more questions, then that is a good thing.

“We tend to accept the world as it is presented to us, and we kind of forget that maybe we can ask questions about why it is this way. Am I really being told the truth, or am I being told a lie to further someone else’s agenda? By getting into the stories of what it means to be a civilian in a time of war, a person living with a preventable disease, or a child in the criminal justice system, we can begin to think more about how we might structure our society to better care for one another.”

Ellis applied this philosophy to current international conflicts.

“Let’s take the current American war in Iran right now. Three thousand people have been killed in Iran, most of them civilians. We do not know who they are, we do not know what happened to them. By not knowing these things it makes it easier to get in the mindset of just believing what we are told. But if we start to understand the stories of those affected, we can understand what the price of the war really is, and what we are giving our consent to.”

international conflict can change the way war is understood.

“We are giving our consent, permission and tax dollars to devastation in another part of the world. Eventually we develop a sort of built-up ignorance to these things, we begin to see affected people as another and not the same as us. But we all laugh, cry, fall in and out of love or have arguments with our in-laws. When we address that it becomes a realization of ‘well they are not that different from me, why are we killing them?”

Ellis's international advocacy has led her to examine the borderless impacts of con-

flict. Nevertheless, her work remains rooted in a local spirit.

“Whether we are living in Norfolk County, or whether we’re living in Kabul, we all need to have courage to deal with the things that life throws at us. And we can gain courage by being inspired by stories of other people’s courage.”

Although Ellis's stories take readers across the globe, her message remains relevant close to home. From Norfolk County to Kabul, she believes empathy, curiosity, and courage are essential to understanding one another and building a more compassionate world.

MP Lewis appointed Shadow Minister for Digital Government and Artificial Intelligence Dr. Leslyn Lewis, Member of Parliament for Haldimand-Norfolk, has been appointed by Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre to serve as Shadow Minister for Digital Government and Artificial Intelligence.

“Artificial intelligence and digital technologies are reshaping every aspect of our society, from our economy and national security to our privacy, jobs, and fundamental freedoms,” said MP Lewis in a media release. “Canada needs a principled approach that embraces innovation while protecting Canadians' rights, strengthening our digital sovereignty, and ensuring technology serves people, not the other way around.”

In her new role, Lewis has been asked to: • Defend Canadians’ privacy, security, and fundamental freedoms in an increasingly digital world.

• Hold the Liberal government accountable for digital legislation, artificial intelligence policy, and the use of emerging technologies.

The Royal Canadian Legion, Simcoe Branch 79, is proudly marking its centennial anniversary, celebrating 100 years since its inception in 1926.

To celebrate this significant milestone, the Branch 79 executive and membership are inviting the community join them in a series of special events.

July 17 is a National Day of Celebration.

“It’s a nation-wide campaign,” said James Christison, Branch 79 president.

On Friday, July 17, there will be an 11 a.m. flag raising ceremony at Simcoe Town Hall. Branch 79 will be joined by representatives from all Legions in Norfolk County to mark the 100th anniversary.

Also on the 17th, at 6 p.m., Branch 79 will be hosting a special 100th Anniversary free BBQ Party for members and the community at the 200 West Street patio and in Memorial Hall. There will be hot dogs, hamburgers, cake and door prizes.

There will be live music from

the Atkinson Brothers Band, and a special 6:30 performance from North Shore Highlanders, part of the nation-wide ‘100 pipers for 100 years’ initiative.

It’s all free and everyone is welcome, said Christison.

“We’ve had some fantastic community support.”

BBQ sponsors include Hank De Koning Meats Ltd, Hoerr Racing Products, Port Dover Lighthouse Theatre, Carter’s Men’s Wear, The Brick, Leon’s Furniture, Halmo Jewellers, The Barrel Restaurant, Ryerse Garden Gallery, and Magnum Ice Cream Company.

Legions in Teeterville, Port Dover and Waterford will also have events on July 17.

On Saturday, Nov. 21, there will be a Centenary Banquet with address by Dr. Dean Oliver, Canadian military historian and

author. About 250 people are expected to attend. *** The Legion was originally formed by several Veterans organizations, including one that was established in Simcoe in 1917.

“It was Earl Haig who in 1925 suggested the Veterans organizations ‘come together under one banner,’” said Christison.

“The biggest thing… is everyone is a volunteer. We’ve been blessed with an excellent core group. It’s not about the individual, it’s about the bigger picture.”

Through the annual Poppy Campaign and its fundraisers, the Simcoe Legion has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars towards Veteran support and community-based initiatives.

The need is still there, said Christison. Looking ahead, the Simcoe Branch 79 Legion, which added just over 130 new members this year, is committed to its core mission: supporting Veterans, promoting Remembrance, and providing a welcoming community space for connection and celebration.

“The Legion is still here to help.”

Confidence is everything in motocross CHRIS ABBOTT Editor

Hannah Cole, racing on the Honda Canada GDR Fox Team, made up some ground Sunday on her ‘home’ track – Moncton’s Riverglade MX – finishing fourth overall in the Women’s MX division.

It was her best performance so far in the eight-race Canadian Triple Crown series, presented by Makita.

Seventh one week earlier (July 5) at Gopher Dunes, near Courtland, Cole showed promise in her second of two motos that day.

“I was in third, just couldn’t keep up with the pace for that one I guess,” said Cole. “I was running up front, but I just maybe got a little bit distracted and kind of made too many mistakes in the middle of the moto which led to getting passed. Not getting through the corner smooth doesn’t seem like a lot, but it can add up. It’s seconds here or there that make the difference really. But at the end of the day, it was still a good day. I feel like I pushed the whole moto as hard as I could.”

With a seventh, seventh and eighth in first three WMX motos, Cole is looking to make up even more ground going into the final three races. The series concludes at Walton.

“I definitely want to be on the podium.

And I know it’s coming and I’m getting there, I just need to put it all together in one weekend, not just one moto at a time.

I know I can do it – just got to keep pushing.”

Earlier in the season, Cole admitted she was struggling with her starts.

“I had two really good starts today (at Gopher Dunes), which put me up closer to the front, so I’ll take that as a win. I’m really just looking for those little wins every weekend at this point. I know it will lead to

something great here soon, but just taking the little things as positives for now and keep moving forward, keep going. Just not going to give up.”

While Cole has had more training at Gopher Dunes this summer, and Riverglade is relatively near her Nova Scotia home, she doesn’t see ‘home track’ as a major advantage.

“I feel like it’s pretty fair game. Everyone’s good everywhere. The field of ladies is so deep this year, so it’s challenging. But at the same time, we’re heading to some tracks that I know for sure I’m really comfortable on. Obviously, everyone else is too, but going in, I know I’m comfortable and I’m just going to do the best that I can.

“Confidence is a big part of it for sure.

You’ve got to believe in yourself to do it.”

“She (Cole) has been battling through injuries, just a couple small ones, nothing major,” said Derek Schuster, Honda Canada GDR Fox Racing owner. “But I feel that’s hindered her practice, training, confidence, all those things, and confidence is really important.”

Schuster said he was confident Cole would regain the feeling she had coming into the 2026 season.

Honda Canada GDR Fox Racing teammate Dylan Rempel excelled in the 250 Pro division, finishing 1-2 for second overall at Gopher Dunes.

Rempel red T-shirts were all over the Dunes – 120 ‘DR24’ shirts in total.

“They’re all gone,” said his mom. “I’m going to get more.”

“A lot of buddies and family here today,” Rempel smiled.

It was one of Rempel’s best performances of the year, matching his second overall in the Calgary season opener, even if he came out of the first lap of the second moto in fifth.

“I love Gopher Dunes – it’s my favourite track. The first moto today, I was gone. I didn’t get as good of a start in the second moto. I was charging hard in that last one, but couldn’t get it done.”

Rempel said he wasn’t going to complain about a second, but added with a laugh, “I wish I would have won. It would have been nice!”

Sixth in Round 2, and third in Round 3, there have been some highs and lows.

Going into the second half of the season, Rempel said his goal was to “work hard and just have more fun and hopefully start winning some more motos.”

He did that in Round 5, winning 1st overall in Moncton on July 12, pushing him within 11 points of the 250 leader, Ryan Malinoski, with three races to go.

Rempel, from Aylmer, said he did not have any big hometown celebration plans that Sunday night.

“Just go home and relax… maybe if I had won,” he grinned.

“His day was really good,” said Schuster. “He’s had a couple big crashes recently and I felt like our concern for him was if his health was going to be 100 per cent and if he would be good to go. He obviously showed today that he is healthy. I think, this being his hometown race as well, it was really important for him to really go out and try to make a statement. I think he accomplished that.”

‘A child’s health is the greatest gift’ is not only the front half of the London Children’s Health Foundation Charity Bass tournament’s motto.

It’s a truism based on the most personal of experiences for founders and conveners Brad and Julie Thomson, whose ongoing efforts have spearheaded a $284,000 25year running total donation to the London Children’s Hospital (LCH).

Their oldest daughter Kayla’s introduction to the LCH came at the age of two, beginning an 18-year treatment and monitoring journey around a diagnosis of oculocutaneous albinism. Her younger sister Nicole would follow with a diagnosis of Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), a low platelet count in the blood.

“She was a pretty sick little girl,” said Brad of a condition requiring ongoing treatment and monitoring into her late teens.

Rather than wondering what might have been, the couple has been fortunate to see what is possible, Nicole giving birth to their first grandchild, Dylan, seven months ago.

“We were very lucky,” said Brad, a statement brought home further through the loss of his oldest brother’s granddaughter Madison. Born with medical challenges, she passed in her early teens. Not only did the LCH provide medical care through her journey, said Brad, it also assisted following the most difficult of circumstances.

“It’s the family support to get people through the most tragic times of their lives,” he credited.

“And this is only our family story,” Thomson continued. “There is 600 children from Norfolk and Oxford that use that facility each year.”

Mark Twain is credited for the phrase ‘write what you know’, speaking to sharing from one’s own lived experiences.

The Thomsons take a multi-pronged approach to giving back to a facility which has given so much to them. Brad, Kayla and Nicole guest as Santa and elves during the Christmas season both at the hospital and in the community, Christmas trees are sold through the holiday season, donations collected during Santa Claus parades and fundraising concerts held at MacDonald Turkey Point Marina.

Brad’s career as General Manager for the latter began as a ‘petroleum transfer engineer’, pumping gas into boats at Booth’s Harbour as a 12-year-old - “And I’m still here and still pumping gas,” he laughs - and competitive fishing with Julie. That experience, along with access to the world-class fishery in Long Point’s Inner Bay provided the opportunity to consider a benefit bass tournament.

“We understand how to run it,” he ex-

plained.

The effort started in 2001 out of Booth’s Habour, continued with the support of Johnny Johnson, the Thomson family, the Wood family and his current employer, the MacDonald family.

“We’ve been blessed to have these facilities,” Brad credited.

The tournament raised $1,500 in its first year, the Thomsons’ own experience and that of other families they met through the LHC, encouraging them to make it an annual event.

“Julie and I each just said ‘We’ll do it again.’”

They emphasize it’s very much a collaborative affair. Beyond access to facilities, a list of sponsors 20-plus strong including McCormick Canada (via Steve Moore) of Fish Crisp, Montreal Steak Spice and Red Hot fame, provide outright donations or in-kind contribution. Volunteer support includes marina employees, the Long Point Bay Anglers Association (from year one) and the Erie Bassmasters, who staff the live-release weigh-in boat.

“At the end of the day, there is a lot more people involved than just the two of us,” says Brad.

The live-release tournament is held annually on the second Sunday of September, weather depending. Across its quarter-century history, it has been delayed to the following Sunday ‘three or four times,’ says Thomson.

“It’s supposed to be a fun tournament,” smiled Julie, of awareness around safety.

The 2026 fish-off is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 13th, out of MacDonald Turkey Point Marina. Blastoff will be at 7:30 a.m. and weigh-in at 3 p.m. Two-member team entry is $200, $80 of which goes directly to the LCH. An additional $20 builds a big fish pot, with the $100 balance providing top-10 monetary prizes based on the weight of teams’ five heaviest largemouth or smallmouth bass. Competitors have come from all across Ontario, Canada and the United States, says Brad, including Wayne Izumi and Port Rowan’s own Avery Rose Bonin. There are varying degree of seriousness mixed with the realization the event’s cause rises well above bragging rights.

“We’re overwhelmed by the support, all the support over the years - not just one, but 25,” said Julie.

It is admittedly a big commitment for a couple, by simple math, 25 years older than when it started. It’s also a big reward, not only the financial impact of its running total, but in the very human stories the couple has both shared and heard along the way.

“That’s what inspires us to keep moving forward and continuing,” Brad concluded.

Rugby stands tall in Norfolk County CHRIS ABBOTT Editor

Welcome to the home of rugby in Norfolk County.

An official member of the Niagara Rugby Union (NRU), Norfolk Harvesters RFC has a full slate of teams – two men’s (Tier 1 and Tier 2) and a women’s team, as well as junior boys, junior girls and minis.

“Our men’s 1’s kick off at 2 p.m. and our 2’s at 3:30 p.m., every week pretty well except for long weekends. The 2’s, it kind of depends, sometimes team other team does not have enough people,” said Howard Wise from the first team Saturday at Waterford District High School’s rugby field. “Today (July 11), we have some of our players playing with Windsor.”

The men’s teams play in a six-team division against Sarnia, Windsor, Hamilton, Stoney Creek and Stratford.

On Saturday, the Harvesters 1’s defeated Windsor in their second last home game.

“We’ve got one more home game, August 8th against Stratford,” said Wise, noting their season started end of May. “That will be the end of the regular season.”

Playoffs determine who is promoted.

“To me, I find it’s not just about rugby,” said Wise. “We always say we’re not one team. We’re not a 1’s team, we’re not a

2’s team. We’re one club, that’s how we always approach everything. After this game, we do a social. We rent the Lions Hall here in Waterford and do our social there, player of the match, that kind of stuff. Connect over the game and go from there.

“For me, it’s more about the camaraderie. It’s not just ‘you’re there to play rugby.’ You’re there to make those connections.

“Another thing I really like about rugby is that essentially all body types can play,” Wise added.

“There’s a spot for you,” a teammate nodded.

“We’ve got guys who are 120 pounds, and we also have guys like myself pushing 260 (pounds),” Wise smiled. “And anywhere in between.”

U6 is Norfolk Harvesters’ youngest program (as young as four-year-olds) playing flag rugby.

The youth continue with flag rugby until U12, which is the introduction to contact rugby.

“The focus of that (U12) is safe contact technique.”

Cornhole’s thriving in Delhi

Kin Club of Delhi hosts its first outdoor fundraising cornhole tournament “We’re probably one of the largest clubs in Ontario, for registered players. Some players will drive an hour, from St. Thomas and Hamilton, to come here. And for regionals (tournament), they’ll drive up to 2-3 hours sometimes.

“A bunch of us travel all over – I was just in St. John’s for cornhole. There are also four professional cornhole teams in Canada (Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and St. John’s), playing under the ACL (American Cornhole League) banner,” he said, noting he is not a pro player, but is the general manager of the Toronto team.

The Delhi club has humble roots, and still appeals to all ability levels.

“A lot of these people here, they started playing backyard/trailer cornhole. They hear about our club and they come in… not realizing we use tablets and computers and you can follow everything on your phone.

It’s crazy,” Burr laughs. “We have quite the following – we have over 700 members on our Facebook page.”

It was a ‘hot and fun day’ for the Kin Club of Delhi, hosting their first outdoor fundraising cornhole tournament.

“We’re going to try to do it annually,” Delhi Kin Club’s Jessica Matthews, tournament convener. “It was a good turnout, so I’m thinking we’re going to do it every year. 100 per cent of the proceeds go right into Kin, then back into the community.”

Nineteen teams competed Saturday, July 11 at the Delhi District German Home, with two cornhole players on each team.

Many players from Delhi Cornhole Club participated, and the cornhole club took care of tournament ‘technical’ details, making sure the brackets ran smoothly.

Everyone started in the same pool, then divided into three divisions based on rankings after the round robin.

“You’re always playing against somebody that’s on your level, so it’s fun,” said Matthews.

The youngest player was just nine years old, and there were 5-6 teenagers.

“And they held their own. It’s a great sport, anybody can play it,” said Matthews.

“It’s for all age levels.”

The Kin Club of Delhi is active in the community, sponsoring multiple sports teams and the two local elementary schools. They are also looking to expand the dog park they recently built, said Kin Club’s Jennifer Kichler.

Jon Burr, convener of the Delhi Cornhole Club, teamed up with Trever Howden from the Kin Club of Delhi, finishing third in the A division after a semifinal loss to Bram Leach and Bill Ingram.

Burr, who is also a regional cornhole director, noted the Delhi club regularly has 60-70 players at the German Home every Tuesday from October to June.

“Our club’s been running here for five years now, and we’ve been getting about the same number every week,” said Burr.

Norfolk Sports Hall of Recognition adds athletes

Norfolk Sports Hall of Recognition introduced its newest crop of inductees on July 4.

Jim Turkiewicz, Pat Murphy, Dave Howard, Sean Jamieson, John Axford, and Walter Krawec were officially inducted into the Norfolk County Sports Hall of Recognition. Axford, who was nominated in 2023, was able to join the inductees recognized at this year’s gala ceremony at the Delhi Hungarian Hall.

lifelong contributor to sport, earning his place as a 2026 inductee into the Norfolk County Sports Hall of Recognition. A proud representative of Canada, Krawec competed at the 1976 Olympic Games in rowing, marking the beginning of an exceptional athletic career that has spanned decades.

His accomplishments include numerous victories at the Royal Canadian Henley, Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships, and Ontario Indoor Rowing Championships, along with a World Masters Championship title in 2005.

He also earned top finishes at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta and claimed a world title at the CRASH-B Indoor Rowing Championships in 2022.

Beyond competition, Krawec’s commitment to endurance and sport is evident through achievements such as completing a 31-mile solo crossing of Lake Ontario twice and running the Niagara Falls International Marathon. As a Physical Education teacher and coach, he has inspired generations of students and athletes. His lifelong dedication to sport, excellence, and community makes him a truly deserving inductee.

Dylan Wright, Honda Canada GDR Fox Racing’s ace in the 450 Pro division, went into Round 4 at Gopher Dunes with three consecutive first overalls from Calgary to Quebec.

He won the first moto, despite apparent mechanical issues, but more mechanical issues hampered his second moto and he did not finish, giving him fifth overall.

“In the first moto, it looked in some ways probably worse than we actually thought it was once they got off the track,” said Schuster, “because it was putting engine oil onto the exhaust, which makes it smoke really bad.”

The engine was carefully checked before the second moto. The valve cover was pulled off, they pulled cams out to check them…

“Everything looked good enough where they decided not to change engines,” said Schuster.

“The crankshaft ended up going in the second moto. It probably happened because it probably did get a little too low in oil the first moto, and too much stress on that engine, too much heat. It was probably like… just a crank bearing or something like that, that locked up.

“It was such a hardfought race,” Schuster added.

“Honestly, that’s what just makes it a hardfought season, right?”

Wright jumped back in the saddle at Riverglade MX in Moncton, New Brunswick on July 12.

After Round 4, Wright led the 450 Pro division with 184 points, 12 points ahead of second-place Harri Kullas. Third-place Sebastian Racine had 148 points.

Second overall in Moncton, Wright still leads the 450 Pro standings with 231 points, ahead of Kullas at 219 points.

Round 6 of the Triple Crown Series is July 19 at Sand Del Lee in Ottawa, followed by Round 7 in Quebec, and the finale, August 16 at Walton Raceway, north of London (near Goderich).

Honda Canada GDR Fox Racing’s rookie, Braxton Zeitner, who has been racing in the amateur division this year, was expected to make his Triple Crown Series debut later in the season.

Dylan Rempel (24) didn’t get the start he wanted in the second 250 Pro moto in Round 4 of the Triple Crown Series, but he clawed his way back to second place.

Sean Robert Jamieson is a distinguished baseball talent whose outstanding career has earned him induction into the Norfolk County Sports Hall of Recognition. A native of Waterford, Jamieson built an impressive foundation with the Simcoe Giants and Canadian Thunderbirds, capturing multiple OBA Provincial Championships at the mosquito, peewee, and bantam levels.

He continued to excel at Niagara County College, earning Academic All-American and Gold Glove honours, before reaching new heights at Canisius University. There, he was named MAAC Player of the Year and Male Student Athlete of the Year in 2011, while again achieving Academic All-American status. Drafted by the Oakland Athletics, Jamieson enjoyed a successful professional career, highlighted by multiple All-Star selections across several minor league levels.

Internationally, he proudly represented Team Canada, winning a gold medal at the 2015 Pan Am Games. His achievements, leadership, and continued involvement in local baseball make him a truly deserving inductee.

Farm employee soccer vs OPP highlights sports day LEAH BAUER Advocate Contributor

Community members, farm workers, and members of the local OPP branch gathered at Wind-Del Community Park for the 3rd annual Farm to Farm Tug of War and OPP versus Farm Workers Soccer Match on Sunday, July 5th.

The highly anticipated sports day brought hundreds together in support of The Chill Spot, and its adjacent On the Farm Magazine.

town Simcoe which offers exactly what the name entails, a chill place for farm workers.

The Chill Spot is a place for farm workers to rest, receive needed support, and enjoy a well-deserved break from the farm.

Leanne Arnal, organizer of the event and The Chill Spot, hopes that both the new space and the event itself help to ensure farm workers feel like they are included in the community.

“It is important to help all members of our community feel welcomed,” said Arnal. “Farm workers are so important to Norfolk County, and to Canada, and they

should always feel like they are a part of the community and not apart from the community.”

That sentiment is what guided Arnal to begin the annual Tug of War and OPP versus Farm Worker Soccer Match. The event brings in workers from farms across Norfolk County and it offers a special opportunity for all members of the community to come together.

This year, Arnal added in some new events such as the Dunk Tank, where par-

ticipants were able to make a donation to dunk community leaders, farm owners, and members of the OPP. The event also included a cricket match, and a jerk chicken eating contest.

Proceeds from the event go towards The Chill Spot, and On the Farm Magazine, both aspects of the non-profit work to raise awareness about farm workers, support farm workers, and help increase the feeling of community with farm workers and fulltime residents.

The annual Farms of Norfolk Football Association tournament on Sunday, August 9 promises exciting soccer close to home.

The community is invited to the 7th annual FNFA event, which brings together international agricultural workers from farms in Norfolk, Haldimand and Brant counties for a day of soccer, friendship, and community celebration. Admission is free.

The 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. tournament at the Norfolk County Youth Soccer Park, 660 West Street, Simcoe, provides an opportunity to recognize the important contributions that seasonal agricultural workers make to local farms, communities, and food systems.

This year’s tournament reached its capacity - 12 farm teams will compete this year.

“It’s a tournament that goes all day,” said Lynda Kohler, Executive Director, Grand River Community Health Centre. “We limit the number of teams because of the amount of play time for each farm. I think this year, it’s the highest number of teams we’ve had. All of the teams are from our local area – Brantford, Brant, Norfolk, and Haldimand.”

This year is especially meaningful as they celebrate 60 years of the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program, nationally.

The international agricultural workers are very important, said Kohler, supporting many farms in the region and the local economy.

“They are the ones who help to put food on our tables, so I think they are very important.

We have had six decades of international workers coming to Canada, so it’s a nice milestone to celebrate this year. I think it’s nice to have the community come out and support this soccer tournament because we can show our recognition of their work.”

“The tournament is more than a sporting event - it is a celebration of culture, teamwork, resilience, and the longstanding partnership between Canada and the workers who have been coming here through SAWP for six decades,” said Maureen Acuna Harrison, Health Promoter/Community Health Worker (International Agricultural Workers Health Program) at the Grand River Community Health Centre, who leads the coordination of the FNFA soccer tournament.

There will be six food trucks on site, a DJ, and activities for kids including face painting and a balloon artist.

“We want to welcome the community to be part of this event, and to celebrate the workers,” said Kohler.

“There’s a lot of soccer to view, so cheer on your favourite teams.

It really is a family-oriented event for everyone to join in.”

A lively game of cricket was played at the Farm to Farm sports day at the Win-Delhi Community Park.

M&M Hoops stresses ‘skills, drills and fun’ CHRIS ABBOTT Editor

Each day of the M&M Hoops youth basketball camp highlighted an inspirational ‘quote of the day.’

“We are in our 26th year – it’s hard to believe,” said M&M Hoops co-founder and coach Jean Montgomery, who originally partnered with long-time coach Bill Macovik to promote youth basketball in Norfolk County. Macovik passed away in 2018 at the age of 65.

“So we keep it alive, and we want to keep his memory alive, because he was certainly a wonderful coach. The theme is ‘work hard.’”

This year 38 kids participated, ages 5-14 in different age groups from July 6-10. That number was down from last year, but changing the camp location from Simcoe to Waterford (due to construction) was a factor. It was, however, a very manageable group,

said Montgomery.

“They all want to play a game,” Montgomery smiled during a scrimmage at the end of Thursday morning’s session. “We really stress the ‘skills and drills.’ That’s what makes you a better player… then you play a game. And we have lots of fun.

“Every day is a special day. Monday was ‘Getting to Know You,’ so we did some things together. Tuesday (July 7) we celebrated Canada Day, so we had some trivia and gave out flags. Wednesday was Sports Jersey day. Today was Everybody’s Birthday – everybody brought in a gift, $3 maximum, and everybody goes home with something. Friday, parents and fans are coming in at 11:30, and each group individually will show them what we learned.”Montgomery’s daughter Kate, one of five camp volunteers this year, was one of the original participants.

“She was one of the first – she was

in Grade 6 the first year. She’s come to the camp every year since. She’s had a good career in basketball with the Niagara Knights and played in the Canadian championships, so she knows the game. I depend on her to lead the groups.” It’s not just a fun summer activity, M&M Hoops helps youth learn and grow in the sport.

“We are all positive – we try to teach them the rules, but we are very positive. You want them to feel good about what they can do, and they can get better.” Montgomery also leads the Norfolk Youth Basketball program (norfolkyouthbasketball.ca), which starts again in the fall. Registrations are being accepted now for 5-7 (U8) and 89 (U10), 10-11 year old boys, 10-16 year old girls, 12-13 year old boys and 14-16 year old boys. The house league season runs until March.

The annual Simcoe Heritage and Friendship Festival is just two weeks away.

On the weekend of Friday, July 31 to Monday, August 3, there will be almost non-stop music and family-friendly entertainment in Simcoe’s Wellington, Clifton and Grant Anderson Parks.

The festival’s Classic Auto Show is Sunday, August 2 (rain date August 3) at Lynnwood Park, a short walk from the other venues. The 7-3 show will have its own DJ (Randy Halmo) and food truck, trophies, and draw prizes.

Classic Auto Show proceeds will support will support the food bank. Free admission for spectators!

Local sour cherries ‘not that plentiful’ this year J.P. ANTONACCI Local Journalism Initiative Reporter

There are so few sour cherries in the orchards of Norfolk County that one of Ontario’s largest growers says it’s not worth picking a crop this year.

“We’re not going to harvest anything.

We’re not going to process anything,” said Ryan Schuyler, production manager at the Norfolk Cherry Company, a division of Schuyler Farms.

“The blooms didn’t really come this year,” he said. “There won’t be enough (fruit) to even bother doing anything.”

Last summer, eight million pounds of Ontario-grown cherries moved through the packing and storage facility in Simcoe.

This year, not a single cherry will be pitted, and the 120 migrant workers who normally keep the plant running will be deployed to other farms or have their arrival to Canada delayed until the fall apple harvest.

After surveying the spotty fields, the company decided to save the expense and effort of opening the processing plant, which will sit idle like it did when a spring frost froze out the cherry crop in 2012.

“This is part of the deal if you want to grow sour cherries. It’s very up and down,” Schuyler said of the “cyclical” crop.

He suspects a “frost event” in late April, followed by other cool nights in May, zapped the blossoms.

“That’s likely what did it,” he said.

Farmer Rob Waddle from Cherry Tree Lane Farm has another theory.

“I blame it on this past winter,” said Waddle, who grows four acres of sweet cherries on his Simcoe farm.

Temperatures that dipped to -30 C likely froze the seeds inside the flowers on the cherry trees, Waddle explained. “(The cold) burns it, then it’s dead for this year,” he said.

“We’re way down,” he said. “They’re just not that plentiful this year.”

Many of the cherries on his trees have split bottoms, which Waddle said is weather-related.

“When they get cold rain on a tight skin, that’s when they split,” he said.

Cold cuts into strawberry, blueberry yields Sour cherries are not the only fruit in Norfolk to record a light harvest this year.

The combination of a bitterly cold winter and frosty spring also did a number on local strawberry yields and left some blueberry patches unable to produce a crop.

“Strawberries were hit hard. I’ve heard apples are down too,” Waddle said.

Customers who turned up to pick cherries at Cherry Tree Lane Farm had to work harder than last year to fill their baskets.

“It’s not the easy picking that it normally is,” Waddle said. “You have to wander around a bit more.”

Waddle halted pick-your-own sales for the season on Tuesday (June 30), saying he is worried about customers’ safety up on the high ladders as they search for the few remaining cherries in the sparse trees.

Some farm markets in Norfolk have a limited supply of locally grown sweet cherries still available, but sour cherries popular in jams, pies, tarts and other baked goods - are “pretty much wiped out in this area,” Waddle said.

According to the 2021 Census of Agriculture, Ontario is tops in Canada with 1,383 acres of sour cherries out of 1,916 total acres nationwide.

acreage in the province.

With this year’s harvest cancelled, Schuyler said the few berries that made it past the frost will end up eaten by birds.

The Norfolk Cherry Company still has frozen inventory left over from last year to sell to customers who bake on an industrial scale and purchase cherries at “significant volumes,” he said.

And while he said “there’s no quality difference” between frozen and fresh cherries even after a year or two in cold storage, Schuyler admitted some home bakers who prize fresh fruit may be disappointed.

He has his fingers crossed next year will be a bumper crop to replenish the company’s inventory and take advantage of what will likely be higher prices due to the dearth of fresh fruit available this year.

“That’s what we’re hoping for,” he said.

Leaning into history: the famous Tower of Pisa

By Paul Knowles It turns out, one of the world’s most famous destinations is the result of a mistake. In fact, a series of mistakes.

We had the chance to visit Pisa, and verify for ourselves that the Leaning Tower of Pisa is, indeed, leaning – and not simply an optical illusion. This was a day trip that was part of our terrific Viking Mediterranean cruise.

Pisa is a city in the beautiful region of Tuscany. If you are visiting this part of Italy, be sure to allow time to enjoy the area, and make Pisa one relatively small part of your stay. I say this because, while every traveller wants to see the Leaning Tower, the entire experience can be accomplished in a few hours.

The tower is one of four historic buildings located in the “Square of Miracles,” a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There you will find the Pisa Cathedral, a round, domed building known as the Baptistry of St. John, the Camposanto, as well as the Leaning

building constructed over a 200year period starting in 1152. And although the word “leaning” does not appear in its name, it does, in fact, tilt slightly, leaning 0.6 degrees toward its neighbour, the Cathedral.

Speaking of this, it’s good for prospective visitors to know that you can see all of these amazing buildings from the outside, free of charge, but it will cost you up to 35 euros if you want to enter all of them.

The Pisa Cathedral – officially, the Primatial Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary – is a striking, Medieval masterpiece started in 1064 and completed in its original form in a surprisingly short time. It was finished in 1092.

Nearby sits the Camposanto Monumentale, which is an enclosed cemetery, created in the centuries following the construc-

tion of the Cathedral and the Baptistry, and today, famous for its frescoes.

I’ve saved the best – or at least, the most famous – until last: the Leaning Tower of Pisa. I confess – I knew almost nothing about this modern wonder of the world. I didn’t know it is actually the free-standing bell tower of the Cathedral. I didn’t know that it began to lean during construction, so that the engineers of the time tried to compensate architecturally, with the result that the tower actually has a bit of a banana shape. And that the ongoing problems of unstable sand caused the project to end up significantly lower than planned – the tower is 56 meters high; it was intended to stretch 70 meters. That still involves a climb of 300 stairs, if you are so inclined, and are willing to pay the entrance fee.

All of them are built in the wrong place. Because, the subsoil in the area of the Square of Miracles is, to be somewhat Biblical about it, “shifting sand.” The unstable topography means that it isn’t just the famous tower that leans – everything here is susceptible.

We got an immediate introduction to this local reality when our enthusiastic guide led us into the Square through what she called a back door. After the trek from the coach park, we followed a wall to a gate with a tower, and entered the Square from the side.

That tower in the wall – not the iconic one by any means – was also askew. The guide explained that darn near everything in this part of Pisa is off-centre, because of the unstable terrain.

ments and miscalculations has resulted in one of the most famous buildings in the world. Our guide laughed as she said, “We appreciate in Pisa this mistake very much.”

The reason for that gratitude is immediately apparent when you consider the crowds of tourists wandering around the Square – approximately half of whom are posing for photos as they “hold up” the tower.

Like many historic buildings, the tower took forever to build – 199 years, in three stages, beginning in 1173.

The Tower was close to the public for 10 years, ending in 2001, as engineers sought to counter the continuing lean. They were moderately successful – the lean was reduced by just under half a meter, and the tower was open for climbing once again.

The tower is certainly still leaning – it tilts 5 degrees, or four meters off true, enough that it is clearly evident, and very dramatic. Nonetheless, the engineers of the most recent adjustment assure us that the tower is stable for at least another 300 years – and it has surprisingly withstood four strong earthquakes, since 1280.

So it will probably be fine if you decide to climb those 300 steps.

For us, after exploring the square, and looking at the tower from every direction (it leans to the south, by the way), we found our best perspective as we enjoyed a refreshing treat on the terrace of a nearby gelato shop.
