Ingersoll council approves free diamond use for unique kids baseball league LEE GRIFFI Editor

An emotional presentation by two parents at Monday’s Ingersoll Town Council will allow a new baseball league for children with exceptional needs to enjoy the sport without paying diamond fees.

Jon and Amanda Ryan presented to council, asking them to waive the cost for the Iron Buddies league, which is operated through Ingersoll Minor Baseball. The idea for the program came from the couple following the tragic

death of their son Hudson, who passed away from a seizure in his sleep on January 13, 2023, at the age of four. He was confined to a wheelchair from the age of two.

“Having a child like Hudson made us realize the world is set up for, I don’t want to say excluding these kids. Rather than helping Hudson walk, they fit him for a wheelchair. We are here to break down some barriers and let families know they don’t have to fight as hard as we had to in order to give Hudson a regular, accessible life,” said Amanda.

Oxford County Council approves pay raise for themselves LEE GRIFFI Editor

Oxford County councillors have voted to give members of the next council a pay hike.

In a recorded vote, Warden Marcus Ryan, Deputy Warden Bernia Martin and councillors Brian Petrie, David Mayberry, Jim Palmer, Mark Peterson and Phil Schaefer voted in favour of the increases. Councillors Deb Tate, Jerry Acchione and Deb Gilvesy

voted against the move.

“You will see adjustments recommended to all three positions, warden, deputy warden and councillor…to maintain the sixtieth percentile pay target,” explained the county’s director of human services, Rebecca Smith. “We are also recommending to keep the practice consistent of adjusting council’s pay based on whatever is approved for a non-union adjustment in each budget year,” she added.

The couple has partnered with the Jays Care Foundation and has full support from the minor baseball board to go ahead with the program.

“It will be run separately and Jon and I will take care of fulfilling the needs of the foundation to make sure we give them the appropriate feedback,” she added.

Iron Buddies is an adaptive baseball league for children and youth living with physical, developmental, intellectual and cognitive disabilities. Players participate with the support of trained volunteer “Buddies.”

“Every athlete plays, every athlete bats, every athlete belongs. Our league exists because every child deserves the chance to wear a team jersey, hear the crowd cheering their name, and experience being part of a team,” Amanda said.

Hudson lived with a rare genetic condition called Sotos Syndrome. Some of its characteristics include hypotonia, global developmental delay, cognitive delay, scoliosis, and epilepsy.

“It’s an opportunity for children with exceptionalities to ensure they have a league of their own. Not all disabilities are visible. It could be anything from sensory to a fear of crowds. Our league exists because every child deserves a chance to wear a team jersey, hear the crowd cheering them on, and experience being part of a team,” said Jon. The cost for each player currently sits at $60, a fee which covers the adaptable jerseys each player will wear. Iron Buddies will start Aug. 22 and run every Saturday until Oct. 24, with no sessions on Sept. 19 and Aug. 29.

One of the slides of the couple’s presentations certainly struck a chord with members of council and others in attendance.

“When Hudson was alive, we spent count-

less hours advocating for opportunities that many families take for granted. This league is our promise that other families won’t ever have to fight as hard for the chance to simply play baseball. By supporting Iron Buddies, you’re not just providing access to a diamond – you’re helping create memories, friendships, confidence, and belonging for children who deserve the same opportunities as every other child in Ingersoll,” it said.

“I feel like we have really healed by keeping his memory right at the forefront this whole time,” said Amanda.

Council unanimously approved the free diamond use, and Mayor Brian Petrie said the league is a perfect example of what comes from good people in a small town.

“You guys have put a lot of work into this, and it shows. I can’t imagine what you’ve been through, but you are honouring your son.

That’s the thing with accessibility. Without that lived experience, we can’t all benefit from something in the future.”

He added the couple’s ask was pale in comparison to the work they have put in with minor ball in the town and the project.

“I know our staff is super supportive of this.

It’s pretty amazing and I can imagine you are going to add a few more sponsors to that jersey, no problem.”

Coun. Kristy Van Kooten-Bossence echoed the mayor’s comments.

“What you are doing is an amazing thing for the community. I think this is absolutely amazing. It’s going to bring so much to our community and I want to know how we can get involved.”

In dollar figures, the move will cost taxpayers about $40,000 in the next term of council. The warden jumps from $110,455 to $111,830; the next deputy warden will earn $46,613, up from $41,841; and eight councillors will see an increase of $3,844 to $41,336, up from $37,492.

“I’m not going to be on council, so I’m not going to be getting the raise,” said outgoing warden Marcus Ryan, who has already said he will not be seeking re-election as Zorra Township’s mayor. “I voted for it because I’m still going to be an Oxford resident, I’m still going to use the services, I’m still going to pay the taxes.

I very much want us to attract and retain the best councillors we can to spend my tax dollars.”

Woodstock City/County Councillor Tait made it clear why she voted against the move.

“Times have changed, and it's very hard on our residents with all the (tax) increases we have had over the years, and of course the cost of living is up.”

Coun. Gilvesy explained politics can be a difficult job at times, but she doesn’t see her role as one of employment.

“We’re not here to collect a paycheque or a wage or a salary. We’re here for public service.”

Ryan said lowering compensation in any sector does not result in increased productivity. He added more people will not be attracted to the warden’s chair without offering a good wage.

“That’s just not the way the world works.

Whether you’re an Oxford County, or a McDonald’s or a farm operator. No matter what your business is, you only attract and retain better people by offering better

compensation.”

Tait explained her concern is people will run for public office just for the monetary rewards as opposed to the right reasons.

“The people who are doing it for the money means we’re not getting the best people to serve the community and I’ve seen it…We’re not the private sector and it’s not a job.”

Coun. Brian Petrie said the workload for members of council shouldn’t be overlooked and added he treats his position as mayor of Ingersoll as a full-time role.

“I don’t know how someone would not treat it as a full-time position and be able to say you’re giving all you could give.

Yes, it is public service…but you need to be able to give the time it deserves. You see the size of the agendas, the amount of reading it takes, and the research; there are a lot of things going on. I don’t think this increase is extravagant whatsoever.”

Tait pushed back, saying serving as an elected official does not prevent someone from having a career outside of politics.

“You use your time wisely…I think it’s a terrible comment to say you can’t be employed to be a mayor or something. That’s incorrect.”

“Just sharing my opinion,” added Petrie.

Some municipalities in Ontario have other methods of setting elected officials’ pay, including London and Guelph, which use independent citizen remuneration committees to review council compensation. Ottawa has a policy that ties annual cost-of-living adjustments for council remuneration to inflation, avoiding annual votes on raises. Mississauga has also used an automatic annual indexing formula for council compensation.

OPP signs 30Forward pledge LEE GRIFFI Editor

The Ontario Provincial Police is joining the 30Forward initiative, a program aiming to increase the representation of women in policing.

Inspired by the 30x30 initiative, 30Forward is a Canadian movement dedicated to recruiting, retaining and advancing women in policing. By signing the pledge, the OPP is committing to working toward women representing 30 per cent of its uniform officers.

In 2024, approximately 1,300 women were serving in uniform roles within the OPP, which is approximately 21.5 per cent of uniform members.

Oxford OPP media relations Const. Randi Crawford said, while she is not formally on the organizing committee, she is actively involved in supporting the program through media and recruiting events.

“I am always hopeful when new initiatives are started.

Anytime there is something new it usually catches the attention of a lot of people. I’m hopeful that it catches the attention of possible new female recruits.”

She added the campaign will help break down the stigma that policing is still more of a masculine career.

“Women are going to be able to see more women with personalities similar to their own doing great things in policing. I think focusing on getting females interested in a career with us and talking about transferable skills they already possess can really open some minds and create some interest and excitement for some women.”

As part of Crawford’s role with the OPP, she helps organize and schedule attendance at career fairs and makes herself available to take phone calls and emails from members of the community interested in policing.

“I mentor female auxiliary officers and cadets as they navigate opportunities in the organization. But I think the most important role I play is by trying to be the best role model I can possibly be. Being a female police officer with great family, friends, colleagues, and community partners, I try to lead by example.”

She added caring for her community and doing the best she can personally to apply positive interactions in her career as a police officer.

Crawford feels the OPP will eventually reach the 30 per cent target in the future.

“I think we can. We aren’t too far off. I have seen the number of women in policing increase greatly since 2011 when I started in Halton and 2014 when I joined OPP.” She also wanted people to realize even though there is a push for hiring more women, they are also pushing to hire in general.

“We need more people with good morals who are hardworking and mentally and physically strong. People who care about the safety of themselves and others and who truly want to make a difference in the communities they serve. It’s not an easy career, but it is a rewarding one.”

In addition to enhancing recruitment strategies for women, the OPP said it is committed to identifying and removing barriers that may inhibit increasing representation across all ranks, including leadership roles.

“The OPP has long held the view that when we reflect the diversity of the communities we serve, we are in a better position to respond to their safety needs and concerns.

Signing on to the 30Forward initiative is a step closer to achieving this goal,” explained a press release.

"The OPP is pleased to partner with 30Forward and renew our commitment to creating opportunities for women in policing,” added Commissioner Thomas Carrique. “Every woman who joins policing helps build a future where the next generation sees no limits on who can serve" Deputy Commissioner Kari Dart said women belong in policing because their voice, perspective and leadership make the profession stronger.

“30Forward provides the OPP the tools and network to strengthen opportunities for women within the organization."

Ingersoll school hit by Pride flag vandals LEE GRIFFI Editor

A flagpole has been cut down, and a Pride flag has been stolen in the Town of Ingersoll.

The Oxford Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were notified of mischief to a flagpole and theft of a Pride flag at Laurie Hawkins Public School.

“At approximately 9:55 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, four unknown suspects attended a school on Innes Street in Ingersoll. The suspects are being described as four young, white males, wearing T-shirts and face coverings,” said a police news release.

Police said one suspect appeared to be carrying a battery-operated hand saw.

The Echo reached out to the Thames Valley District School Board as to why the flags are still flying now that June’s Pride month has ended.

“Many schools fly the Pride flag beyond the month of June, and year-round, to reinforce that we are inclusive spaces for students and families who are part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. TVDSB’s flag policy can be found at https:// www.tvdsb.ca/uploads/26/

The statement added there is no specific policy as it pertains to Pride flags, although section 5.0 of the policy speaks to such requests.

“Thames Valley District School Board stands in solidarity with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia.

We remain firmly committed to promoting equity, inclusion and the safety of all students in our schools. We will continue to work closely with the OPP as they investigate this matter,” added the statement.

Town mayor Brian Petrie made a strong statement last week following the release of the police report.

“I am issuing a clear and unwavering message: we stand in firm solidarity with our 2SLGBTQIA+ community following a deeply concerning act of mischief and theft over the weekend.”

He added the act was not a simple act of property damage.

It was a targeted attack on inclusion, safety, and human dignity.

“Flags are symbols of identity, belonging, and pride. To force-

fully remove a symbol of love and acceptance from an educational institution, a place where every child deserves to feel safe and valued, is entirely unacceptable. This destructive act does not reflect the heart, the values, or the people of Ingersoll. We are a community built on kindness, mutual respect, and diversity.

As Mayor, I want to be entirely clear: targeting a symbol of inclusion and pride is an attempt to divide us, but it will only strengthen our resolve to stand together. Our schools must be safe, welcoming environments where every single young person feels a sense of belonging.”

Petrie added hate, intolerance, and exclusion have absolutely no place in our town, and attempts to intimidate or marginalize members of our community will not be tolerated.

“We will not be deterred by acts of division. We will continue to build a community rooted in safety, respect, and mutual support, where everyone is free to be exactly who they are.”

Storm cuts Ingersoll Canada Day Celebrations short KYRAH SMITH Echo Correspondent

On July 1, the Town of Ingersoll was set to host its annual Canada Day celebration in Victoria Park.

Despite scorching temperatures that reached a humidex of approximately 43 Celsius, the community turned out in full force.

Food trucks, local vendors and families gathered to kick off the festivities before severe weather

swept through the area.

At around 5 p.m., heavy rain and powerful winds moved in, forcing organizers to cancel the remainder of the event. Tree branches were brought down, traffic lights along King Street lost power, and vendors scrambled to secure their booths before the storm intensified.

"It got intense very quickly," recalled Shannon McKechnie, owner of Commonplace Books

and a vendor at the Canada Day event. "I felt really lucky I had my partner with me. He had his eye on the weather and made the decision to pack up the books about 30 minutes after the market opened."

McKechnie said all of the books were safely packed away before the rain began.

"Without his attention, it would've been a very significant loss for us. Once the storm got

going, the winds were so strong we, like many others, lost major pieces of our market setup."

She said two legs of their tent snapped during the storm, while many other vendors experienced significant damage to their displays and merchandise.

"A lot of our prints were ruined," said Sam Mansbridge of Aftermath Tattoo Studios.

The celebration had been scheduled to run from 4 p.m. un-

til dusk and included a vendor market, food trucks, children's activities, an outdoor movie and a fireworks display.

Although the weather forced the cancellation of most of the festivities, the evening still ended on a hopeful note. Once conditions improved, hundreds of residents gathered to watch the fireworks, bringing the community together despite the day's unexpected turn.

Ontario Supporting rural Zorra boosts emergency economic development preparedness with in Oxford provincial grant STAFF

The provincial government is investing $145,318 to support what it calls economic growth and long-term prosperity in Oxford. The funding is through the Rural Ontario Development (ROD) program, a $20 million investment by the province to strengthen local economies, support rural workers and assist communities in planning for long-term growth.

"Our rural communities have always been built on hard work, strong local leadership, and people who are willing to invest in their neighbours and their future,” said Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman in a press release. “These six projects are great examples of that. I'm pleased our government can help support initiatives that will strengthen our local communities, encourage economic growth, and improve the quality of life for the people who call rural Ontario home,” he added.

Through the first intake of the ROD program, the province is supporting the following projects in Oxford: • $10,000 for Oxford Speech Plus to make improvements to its Children’s Treatment Centre

• $2,535.75 for CAT Demolition and Excavating to improve service delivery and marketing through digital integration • $32,182.41 for Oxford County to use toward its Handcrafted Routes program • $21,600 for The Livingston Centre feasibility study Supporting Rural Economic Development and Capacity Building • $29,000 for The Town of Tillsonburg to use toward its health care recruitment program • $50,000 for the City of Woodstock to use toward its 2026-2031 economic development strategic plan “The Rural Ontario Development program demonstrates our government’s commitment to supporting small, rural and northern communities across Ontario,” said Lisa Thompson, Minister of Rural Affairs. “Through investments that support local priorities and economic development opportunities, we are helping rural communities build strong foundations for long-term success.”

Through the first intake of the ROD program, the province is investing over $5.5 million in 116 projects across rural Ontario.

Clarification: In the July 3 edition of the Echo, a story appeared on page 7 regarding Oxford MPP Arpan Khanna’s appointment as the Conservative Shadow Minister for Justice and Attorney General of Canada. Zorra Township has improved its emergency preparedness thanks to a provincial grant.

Zorra Township has strengthened its emergency preparedness through a $47,000 Community Emergency Preparedness Grant (CEPG) from the Government of Ontario.

The grant, through the Ministry of Emergency Preparedness and Response, supports communities in improving their ability to prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies.

The money has allowed the township to purchase emergency response equipment, including an emergency response trailer, 125 cots for evacuation and reception centres, deployment carts, as well as pillows, blankets, hygiene kits, and portable chargers. Zorra is also performing electrical upgrades enabling the EV charger at the Zorra Municipal Centre to operate on a backup generator during power outages.

“These additions significantly enhance the Township’s ability to quickly establish emergency evacuation and reception centres and support residents during critical events,” said a press release.

“Zorra Township also thanks Perth County Paramedic Services for donating surplus linens to complement the new shelter equipment. Appreciation is extended to Deputy Chief Tristan Barter and Acting Commander/Zorra Fire Training Officer Brian Stoeser for coordinating the donation,” it added.

“This funding strengthens the ability of small and rural municipalities to support residents during emergencies,” said Deputy Mayor Katie Grigg.

“These resources help us establish evacuation and reception centres quickly when our community needs them most,” she added.

"Through the Community Emergency Preparedness Grant, our government is helping the Township of Zorra and area strengthen its emergency response capabilities," explained Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman.

"This investment will help to equip the new Emergency Operations Centre with the essential supplies needed to support extended emergency operations, helping ensure rural Oxford is better prepared to respond when it matters most."

Ontario investing nearly $600,000 in Oxford community spaces STAFF Woodstock Ingersoll Echo

The Ontario government is providing four non-profit organizations and one municipality in the county with $595,800 in funding through the Ontario Trillium Foundation's (OTF) capital grant stream.

A press release said the investments will “help improve community spaces, expand access to local programs and activities, and ensure residents can continue to benefit from the services and facilities that make Oxford a great place to live, work and raise a family.”

"Our local non-profit organizations play a vital role in building strong communities," said Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman. "These Ontario Trillium Foundation capital grants will help organizations across Oxford improve their facilities and continue providing valuable programs and services. Congratulations to this year's recipients on receiving this important investment."

United Way Oxford launches annual school supply campaign LEE GRIFFI Editor

As the cost of back-to-school shopping continues to climb, United Way Oxford is once again launching its Supplies4Students campaign to help Oxford County families.

The Supplies4Students campaign converts monetary donations into gift cards for Giant Tiger, Staples and Dollarama, giving families the flexibility to buy the supplies their children actually need. Every dollar donated goes directly toward purchasing gift cards.

“For over a decade, our community partners have been promoting this program as a more intentional, more appropriate and more dignified model of support. It allows families to purchase what they actually need and provides children with the classic back-to-school shopping experience that is part of the fun and excitement experienced by so many,” said Kelly Gilson, the United Way’s executive director.

Last year, the campaign supported 1,382 students from 674 families, but with the continued rise in need, United Way Oxford has set a goal of distributing gift cards to 1,400 students and reaching even more people. When the program first started in 2016, just 300 students received help.

“Back-to-school is an expensive time of year – from school supplies to indoor/outdoor sneakers and everything in between, the costs add up. With more and more families struggling to make ends meet, this is a meaningful way to lend a helping hand,” said Gilson.

The program is open to elementary and high school students, and Gilson explained it works differently than others, something done by design.

“Traditionally it's very much a backpack type of program where there are no choices. You receive a backpack filled with things people have generously donated, but they may not be the things you actually need. By allowing choice, you're actually providing a much more dignified opportunity for families.”

Families can register online through the program website, which also includes an eligibility chart. Assistance is available to Oxford County families with children attending publicly funded schools, including those in the Thames Valley District School Board, London District Catholic School Board and Conseil scolaire catholique Providence.

“We provide behind-the-scenes support and all of the administration, accounting and all of those things. But we do that all as our in-kind donation. So, 100 per cent of the donations received for this program go to buy gift cards. If we were ever in a position, and sometimes we have been, where there might be some extra dollars at the end of August, we set it aside for the next year's program.”

Gilson said the biggest concern each year is raising enough money to meet demand.

“There's often stress on whether there will be enough money, but it just goes to show that we are committed to ensuring that the dollars for this Oxford Supplies

for Students program stay within that program.”

Unique event wows Woodstock crowd The Bulls and Bikes Extreme Show brought high octane excitement to the Woodstock Fairgrounds on July 11, delivering a packed afternoon of rodeo action, motorcycle stunts, and family friendly entertainment. Gates opened at 12:30 p.m., with the main show running from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. as visitors filled the grounds. Guests enjoyed a full lineup of adrenaline charged performances, including bull riding, bareback bronc riding, barrel racing, and a

series of freestyle motocross stunts featuring backflips and high flying jumps.

The fairgrounds buzzed with additional attractions such as food trucks, a beer garden, line dancing, a western fashion show, and a variety of vendor booths that kept the fun going well into the evening.

Childhood Friends Reunite for 20th Annual Luncheon at Elm Hurst Inn & Spa KYRAH SMITH Echo Correspondent

On June 16, a group of lifelong friends gathered to host their 20th annual luncheon at Ingersoll’s Elm Hurst Inn & Spa. “My public-school friends and I have held an annual luncheon for the last 20 years. That in itself is quite remarkable,” marvelled Linda Trowell, an award-winning local artist from Oxford County.

Trowell explains that she has known

these women since the age of five, when they first attended the same one room public school, S.S. No. 6 Dereham, Verschoyle.

“Daughters of farm families in Oxford County, we have much in common,” Trowell said. “We joined 4-H clubs, attended the same church, and went to IDCI (Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute).”

Although the group remained close throughout their youth, life after graduation took them down various paths.

Trowell shared that when seven members of the original group turned 65, they agreed to meet again to reminisce about old times. What they did not expect was that the reunion would grow into an annual tradition, eventually attracting younger siblings and friends who wished to join as well.

Over the years, the luncheon has been held at various locations, but in recent years the Elm Hurst Inn has become the

preferred gathering place.

“This year, we older ones will be 85, marking 20 years since our first reunion.”

Canada Day festivities a hit in the Friendly City Woodstock’s 125th anniversary Canada Day celebration drew a record setting crowd to Southside Park on July 1, as residents gathered for a full day of music, family activities, and patriotic festivities. While much of southern Ontario faced intense thunderstorms and severe wind gusts, Woodstock avoided the worst of the weather, allowing all daytime programming and evening performances to proceed as planned. Families and festival goers filled the grounds early, exploring vendors, kids’

zones, and community booths before the band took the stage. Canadian rock icon Kim Mitchell headlined the free concert at 8 p.m., delivering classic hits and a spirited. The festivities concluded with a vibrant fireworks display, marking both Canada Day and the city’s 125th anniversary with a spectacular finale. Southside Park once again proved to be the heart of Woodstock’s celebrations, hosting a Canada Day event residents will remember for years to come.

Wranglers 13U, Woodstock ramping up for Baseball Canada nationals JEFF TRIBE Echo Correspondent

The result might not have been the one the Woodstock 13U Wranglers would have preferred.

But a tight 13-12 Inter-County Baseball Association Tier I loss to the visiting Brantford Red Sox is the kind of competitive preparation they can benefit from leading up to the Baseball Canada 13U National Championship tournament August 20 to 23 in Woodstock.

“A game where we had to play through some battles we had with ourselves at the start,” agreed Wranglers coach Dave Klochnyk. “Hit well at the end, came up a little bit short.”

The opportunity to participate in a Baseball Canada national event is not something to be taken for granted. However, given the fact 2026 represents the fourth consecutive year a host berth has been open to a Wranglers squad, it is an opportunity to not only be celebrated but anticipated following a five-year agreement extension with Baseball Canada through 2031. In total, with back-to-back two-year host agreements concluding this year, The Friendly City is scheduled to act as 13U host city for nine years running.

“It feels kind of like we’ve got

a bit of a monopoly,” laughed Woodstock Minor Baseball Association Vice-President Brent Peltola. “It doesn’t mean we’ll have it forever, but we really enjoy running it.”

In brief, Woodstock’s long-standing relationship with the event recognizes great facilities, a central location, access to both accommodation and community services, as well as demonstrated operational commitment and expertise and importantly, municipality buy-in, both during the tournament and year-to-year.

“The City of Woodstock does a great job of supporting it,” Peltola credited.

The 13U Wranglers are scheduled to open the draw Thursday, August 20 at Southside East against Quebec 2. Simultaneously, Ontario 2 will take to the Southside West field against Prince Edward Island. Ontario 1, British Columbia 1 and 2, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Alberta and Quebec 1 round out the draw.

Pool play continues through Friday, with playoffs opening Saturday and finals beginning Sunday at 8 a.m. The Bronze and Gold Medal games are set to go Sunday, August 23 at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Southside West and

There is a level of confidence and familiarity built through experience. Not wishing to fix something that is not broken, WMBA is looking at minor improvements to the 2026 model from 2025, rather than any drastic overhaul, ‘smoothing the edges of a couple of things.’

Based on the popularity of one night of musical entertainment inside the licensed refreshment tent last year, it will be extended through Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The organizing committee is also working with Baseball Canada on upgrading scorekeeping and minor tournament officials.

Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame shortstop Ernie Banks is credited with saying, ‘Let’s play two’, an enthusiasm for the game extrapolated at 13U nationals, with 38 scheduled games across four days for nine years running. One year, let alone nine, does represent a lot of work for a lot of people, Peltola admits, citing the saying about doing something one loves, not feeling that way.

“We love running the tournament, and we love supporting baseball in our community. It doesn’t feel like that much work.”

As the organization continues and the pace ramps up with the approach of first pitch, Klochnyk is also getting his young charges prepared for the challenge.

“It’s pretty cool,” said 13U Wrangler Daxton Smith, who played third base against the Red Sox. “Not many players get to play in it.

“A lot of good baseball players and a lot of good teams.”

“It’s going to be a pretty good experience,” agreed teammate Charlotte Roy. “Just excited to be there. Meet some new teammates and just have fun.”

fought back to send the game into extra innings. Although the Red Sox escaped with a one-run win after surviving a bases-loaded, one-out Wranglers rally, Klochnyk was pleased with the never-say-die effort from his team.

Following the provincial qualifier tournament, the Wranglers can add up to six players from non-qualifying teams to an

18-member roster. It is an opportunity for each participant to play in an event featuring some of the best 13-year-old players in Canada, names one may recognize in the future.

“We hope to compete and hold our own,” concluded Klochnyk, who, previously active on the tournament committee, is looking forward to experiencing the opportunity as a coach. “I get to be excited about it too.”

WOSL Premier Division Woodstock sits in second place with a 5-0-1 won-lost-tied record, good for 15 points, seven behind Jagiellonia, which has played two more games.

As mentioned, Woodstock opened Premier Cup with a 2-0 win over the league leaders, fuelled offensively by goals from Keaghan Brett and Payton Krienselokker, and supported by a clean sheet courtesy of keeper Alex May. Krienselokker is tied for second in regular season scoring, tallying seven goals.

WOSL First Division Woodstock FC B has earned two draws in six outings and is looking to improve on that record in the season’s second half.

WOSL Second Division Woodstock FC C has picked up ties in two of its seven outings. Kristian Spina leads his squad offensively with four regular-season goals.

WOSL Third Division East The Ingersoll Flyers stand atop their divisional standings, boasting five wins and two ties in seven games, good for 17 points. The Flyers have scored 31 goals and allowed just seven and are two points ahead of the second-place German Canadian FC B team.

Ingersoll has three players in the league’s top ten, paced by Brayden Grills at the top of the list with eight goals.

The Sweaburg Storm U13 girls were undefeated at the nine-team Ontario Rural Softball Association provincial championship tournament Saturday, July 11 and Sunday, July 12 in Innerkip.

The Storm locked up the title with a 10-0 shutout victory Sunday afternoon, continuing a run of what coach Matt Walker said was strong pitching and batting throughout.

“All through the lineup,” he said of the team’s ability to put runs on the board. “And just consistency from the top to the bottom.”

The Storm scored all its runs in the first two innings of the final. Sweaburg jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead thanks to singles from Olivia Merkt, Olivia Morris and Rubee Pullen, walks to Renee Walker and Lauren Clark, and a two-run double from Gwen Bullock, who finished the game with a pair of doubles. The Storm pushed its lead into double digits with a six-run second led off by a Tesslyn Znidarsic walk, Alanna McKie hit-by-pitch and Merkt single. Morris and Bullock added walks with Lyla Visser stroking an RBI single, Pullen following with a walk and Clark closing out scoring with an RBI single.

Pitching duties were shared between Visser, Walker and Pullen across the two-day tournament, with Visser, backed up by solid defence, working five shutout innings to earn a complete-game championship victory. She struck out 11 while walking four and surrendering one base hit.

Sweaburg opened the draw with a solid 21-4 win over Port Dover Saturday morning, plating four, five, six and six runs per inning. Emily Steele and Znidarsic each slammed three-run home runs to pace a considerable offence, the latter adding an RBI triple, while Steele finished 2 for 3 with a walk and four runs scored. Jenna Hamulecki and Bullock were each 3 for 3 with two runs scored, Visser added a two-RBI triple, McKie, Pullen, Morris

and Merkt contributed a base hit apiece and Autumn Hysert walked, was hit by a pitch and scored twice.

The Storm also turned a 5-3-2 double play, running from Clark at third through Morris at first and Bullock behind the plate.

“We had some great defensive plays as well,” said coach Walker.

The Storm blew into the quarterfinals with a second win Saturday, 14-4 over Fisherville, combined with positive runs for and against totals. Sweaburg opened up a tight 2-0 game in the bottom of the third with a two-out, five-run outburst, built on a leadoff Znidarsic triple, Steele double, Morris single, Bullock triple and Visser single. Bullock added a second triple on the game with Visser, Walker, Clark, Znidarsic and Hamulecki contributing singles.

Former Woodstock resident received city call award for NHL career STAFF Woodstock Ingersoll Echo

Mayor Jerry Acchione was presented with an NHL Linesman Jersey worn by Brad Kovachik and presented the now-retired zebra with a Certificate of Distinction at the July 9 regular meeting. Kovachik was honoured for a three-decade-long National Hockey League career.

Kovachik grew up in Woodstock and began officiating hockey at just 12 years old, working local minor hockey games at the old Perry Street Arena while continuing to play competitively. As a player, he skated for the Woodstock Navy Vets in the Provincial Junior Hockey League from 1989 to 1992.

He focused on officiating. He spent three seasons as an Ontario Hockey League

linesman and was selected to work the 1996 Memorial Cup in Peterborough, an assignment that caught the attention of NHL supervisors.

Kovachik made his NHL debut on Oct. 10, 1996, working a game between the Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers.

He became a full-time NHL linesman the following season and wore uniform No. 71 throughout his career In 29 NHL seasons, he skated 1,971 regular-season games, 200 Stanley Cup playoff games, five Stanley Cup Final assignments (2014, 2017, 2020, 2022 and 2023), the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, 2004 World Cup of Hockey and NHL All-Star Games in 2012 and 2023.

Kovachik now lives in Fort Erie, Ontario, and is the Referee-In-Chief of the Greater Ontario Hockey League (GOHL).

ERTH Power Hosts Community Open House KYRAH SMITH Echo Correspondent

ERTH Power welcomed customers and residents of Ingersoll to tour its new 57,000-square-foot Zero Carbon Business and Operations Centre at 387 Thomas Street in Ingersoll on July 11.

"We are proud to welcome community members into the new home of ERTH Power," said Chris White, President and CEO of ERTH Corporation. "This facility was purpose-built to support a modern, growing utility and ensure we can continue meeting the evolving energy needs of our customers and communities for years to come."

Following a Friends and Family event earlier in the morning, the Community Open House ran from noon to 2 p.m., allowing visitors to meet members of the ERTH team and learn more about the technology and operations behind the company.

"We're definitely growing, so we have space for growth here," explained Jocelyn Facciotti, Manager of Marketing, Communications and Sustainability.

ERTH Power Corporation is a licensed electricity distribution company providing delivery, billing and maintenance services to more than 25,000 residential and commercial customers. The utility currently serves the communities of Aylmer, Port Stanley, Belmont, Ingersoll, Thamesford, Otterville, Norwich, Burgessville, Beachville, Embro, Tavistock, Clinton, Mitchell, Dublin and Goderich.

"Right now, we serve 15 communities. If all goes as planned, we'll serve 31 communities in total."

Throughout the guided tour, Facciotti highlighted the many design elements incorporated into the new facility, explaining that every detail was thoughtfully considered. From maximizing natural light throughout the building to improve employee wellness, to ensuring accessibility and incorporating subtle tributes to Ingersoll's industrial heritage,

the building was designed with both staff and community in mind.

"You'll notice we have some areas with a more industrial theme. They did that strategically as a tribute to the industrial heritage of Ingersoll."

Each employee workstation is equipped with a sit-stand desk, while the building itself operates using a geothermal heating and cooling system.

"Since it's a zero-carbon facility, it operates on geothermal," said Facciotti. "So, all that geothermal comes into this room."

Guests also had the opportunity to step inside the mechanical room to learn how the geothermal system operates before continuing into the control room, where staff monitor the electrical distribution system using significantly upgraded technology.

"We're making advancements all the time on our outage management system. You can imagine if we go from 15 communities to 31, we'll be monitoring all 31 of those communities. In our old building, it was basically two of these top screens, so this will be much easier."

The new facility also features a drying room for line staff, along with men's and women's change rooms complete with showers.

"At Bell Street, we didn't really have those facilities," said Facciotti. "This is really preparing us for the future."

She added that while the company does not currently employ any female line workers, the upgraded facilities ensure the building is ready to support a more diverse workforce in the years ahead.

The Community Open House attracted approximately 150 visitors, including Ingersoll Mayor Brian Petrie. Following the tour, guests gathered on the outdoor patio for refreshments and an opportunity to speak with ERTH staff.

The open house gave residents a firsthand look at how ERTH Power is preparing for future growth while continuing to invest in the communities it serves.

Gratitude, grief, and wellness: learning to carry both to move forward without leaving yourself behind.

At some point, we all face loss. Losing someone important like a parent, child, spouse, friend, or pet can change how and who we are. It can impact our mental, emotional, and physical well-being in unexpected ways.

As wellness helpers, we often say it’s vital to acknowledge our feelings instead of pushing them away. Grief isn’t something to "get over." It’s something we learn to carry. There’s no timeline for healing, and there’s no right or wrong way to miss someone you love.

What matters is finding ways

The impact of grief on wellness When grieving, our bodies feel the effects as much as our minds. Many feel tired, have tight muscles, headaches, or digestive issues. Some struggle to sleep. Others feel anxious or unmotivated. Grief can weaken the immune system and make daily tasks feel overwhelming.

Self-care is essential and not selfish.

Taking care of your body is key. Move, eat well, rest, stay hydrated, and seek support.

These habits build a strong base for healing during tough emotional times.

Gratitude does not diminish grief Many think that finding happiness after a loss means we loved less or moved on too fast.

In reality, gratitude and grief can coexist.

Feeling grateful for the years, memories, lessons, and love someone shared with us doesn’t lessen the sadness of missing them. Instead, grati-

tude helps us focus on what we gained from that relationship, not what we lost.

We can miss someone while still feeling grateful that they were in our lives.

Every loss is personal You must remember that no one can compare to grief.

Losing a spouse, child, parent, sibling, friend, or pet brings profound emotional pain. While circumstances differ, the impact resonates on a deeper level.

We often don’t know what others are carrying. Some share their struggles without reservation. Others hide their grief behind a smile. Some people appear positive because they practice gratitude. Others may not feel safe sharing their emotions yet.

This is why empathy matters.

Let’s not compare losses or judge grief. Everyone is doing their best with what they have.

Honouring those we have lost While we can’t bring our loved ones back, we can keep their memory alive in meaningful ways.

You might: • Cook their favourite meal • Visit a place they love • Continue a tradition they enjoyed • Support a cause that is important to them • Share stories and memories with family and friends • L ook through photographs and remember the good times • Laugh at moments that still bring a smile These acts keep their influence alive in our lives and in the lives of those around us.

Choosing positivity without ignoring pain Positivity isn’t pretending everything is okay.

True positivity acknowledges pain while making space for hope, joy, connection, and gratitude. It reminds us that life can still hold beauty, even in tough times.

People can get so caught up in their losses that grief dominates every talk and interaction. This often comes from deep pain, but it can push away those who want to help.

Finding balance doesn’t mean you forget; it means you

can grieve while still living your life.

A wellness perspective At R&RMTs, wellness means caring for the whole person: mind, body, and spirit.

If you’re grieving, be gentle with yourself. Allow yourself to feel your emotions. Reach out for support when needed.

Make time for movement, rest, connection, and comforting activities.

Remember that choosing gratitude honours your loss.

The people we love shape who we become. Their lessons, values, laughter, and love stay with us long after they’re gone.

One of the best ways to honour them is to share that love with others.

The Kiln Room Ceramic and Art Studio celebrated its new location on 475 Dundas St., Woodstock, on July 14. The event featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a look at the new space, door prizes, and also honoured the Kiln Room’s third anniversary as a business.

“My heart is so warm from all of these people being here and like - I'm actually kind of speechless to be honest, but it also feels really good to have people in the space, finally, 'cause we've been working so hard to make this happen and when I say 'we,' I don't just mean me and my wife. I mean like it takes a village,” said Kiln Room owner and artist HollyJo. “We've had so many people coming to help us make this happen, and it feels really magical."

Woodstock Mayor Jerry Acchione offered high praise and congratulations to HollyJo and her wife and business partner, Meaghan Eustress, on the opening of their new space.

and in particular, downtown is really super important. We support each other, and we help each other,” he said.

The Kiln Room initially opened in

2023 on 7 Light St. before moving into the new space earlier this year. HollyJo, who uses she/they pronouns, said some highlights include all of the friendships

made through their pottery classes and through the small business community.

Refreshments at the grand opening celebration were provided by local downtown Woodstock businesses such as Cheesy Cow Co., Two Guys and a Whisk, My Kitchen, and Street Ahead Coffee Roasters. Local downtown businesses like Reel Treats, Fair/Square, and Jarful Local Refillery also provided door prizes.

“We have each other's back downtown so we know that if one of us needs something, that someone downtown will be there,” said HollyJo. The new space at the Kiln Room will offer classes and memberships to anyone interested in the craft. There will also be a pottery supply shop featuring materials like clay and tools, as well as handmade pottery pieces by HollyJo, other local artists, and members of the Kiln Room.

"I'm trying to build a community space here and I think that's evident in the turnout tonight,” she said.

Tom Gibson - A Leading Son of Ingersoll

As a child born in Ingersoll in 1876, Thomas Gibson grew up in the family home “Bonar Brae” at the corner of Wellington and Holcroft Streets. His parents, Ingersoll Postmaster Joseph Gibson and his mother Jeanette had raised a family six boys and one girl. As a young man, Tom studied to be a lawyer and had found work with the Lake Superior Corporation; a parent company of Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie.

When the call went out in late 1915 to form new battalions of men to fight in the Great War, Tom Gibson gave up his lucrative career in Toronto to return to his hometown and become the chief recruiting officer for the 168th Battalion, Oxford’s Own. In this role, Major Gibson was second in command. He was instrumental in successfully recruiting over 800 men to join the 168th. He was equally proud of their accomplishments too. While undergoing training at Camp Borden, his men placed first out of some forty other battalions.

When Oxford’s Own shipped out in late October of 1916, he accompanied them to England and stayed with his men until they were all disseminated into other units across the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

On arriving in France in 1917, he was himself taken on strength by the 10th Imperial Corps and then later was sent to the 4th Canadian Pioneers where he was once again placed Second-in-Command. While with the British army, he was involved in the attack on the Messine Ridge – five miles of underground

tunnels and galleries that had been dug and then packed with one million pounds of high explosives. The volcanoes of dirt, dust, materiel and bodies were the result of one of the largest man-made underground explosions of the war. For his part in the operation, Thomas Gibson was awarded the Distinguished Service Order.

When he was with the 4th Canadian Labour Battalion, he and his men had to work under very trying conditions.

Railroads were laid and bridges constructed under a veritable hail of death.

Soldiers often reported how the enemy sought to destroy these labour battalions with their artillery so as to prevent or hamper the transport of fresh troops into the front lines.

After taking part in the horrendous battle at Passchendaele in November of 1917, Tom came down with trench fever and was hospitalized for a brief period of time. It was following his recovery in 1918 that he was assigned to assist Sir Edward Kemp who had been the Minister of Militia in Ottawa before becoming the Minister of Militia Overseas.

The Minister’s role was to negotiate between Canadian and British governments over the use of Canadian troops.

The following year, in 1919, Gibson was appointed the Acting Deputy Minister reporting directly to Kemp. In this position he had responsibility for the disposition of all Canadian troops and the disposal of all Canadian military materiel following the November 11th Armistice.

With the end of hostilities, it must have been some comfort to welcome his wife and two daughters to England for an extended visit.

Later that summer, in July of 1919, Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Gibson was honoured by King George V by being invested with the Order of St. Michael and St. George, as special recogntion of the service he had rendered the Empire in all the offices he had held.

On October 4,1919, Tom Gibson finally returned to his hometown. A huge crowd of admiring citizens gathered on the platform of the Grand Trunk Railway station. There to greet him were representatives of the Soldier’s Aid Commission, the Great War Veterans, the Boy Scouts, the Salvation Army and ministers from many of the local churches, and members of Town Council headed up by Mayor Buchanan. The newspaper reported upwards of 100 automobiles lined the streets while pedestrians filled the remaining spaces. After a few minutes of shaking hands, an immense parade was formed on Thames Street and proceeded to The Ingersoll Inn where the mayor used the second-floor balcony to address the throng.

Two days later, he was honoured by Town Council, welcomed by his fellow veterans and again feted by the people of Ingersoll. By special invitation, he was welcomed into the Council Chambers and encouraged to sit in the mayor’s chair as an official guest of town council.

The following motion was made by Councillor R.A. Skinner, and seconded by M.E. Scott, “that this Council welcome Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Gibson, C.M.G. D.S.O. to the council board and express to him the appreciation of Ingersoll of the splendid honor which he has brought to Ingersoll by

his successful career during the great war”. Mayor Buchanan spoke briefly to the motion, stating that he was certain that it reflected the feelings of the whole community. He went on to say, “You have brought signal honor to your town by your business success as well as your military career”.

Thomas Gibson would eventually return to his law practice in Toronto where he and his wife Clara welcomed three more children. Tragically he would die at the young age of 48 in 1925. Out of respect for his service to King and Country, he was awarded one more honour – a full military funeral and burial in Toronto’s Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Some of you may know Tom Gibson’s grandson, especially if you ever attended the Canterbury Folk Festival. He was the Saturday night emcee – Magoo!

OH, THE PLACES WE’LL GO!

Leaning into history: the famous Tower of Pisa

Chef Janice hands me an apron, a large, very sharp knife, and a cutting board. “Chop this onion,” she says.

Fast forward a few minutes.

Chef Janice examines my work… and I fail. “No, chop it much finer than that.” Lesson learned.

I was standing behind the chef’s table at the Mount Cinnamon Beach and Wellness Resort in St. George’s, Grenada. I was invited to Grenada as a member of an eight-person group of Canadian travel journalists.

To tell the truth, I probably should not have been included on the trip. Because places like Grenada do like to introduce new travel media to their destination, and when it comes to this wonderful island in the east Caribbean, I am not new. This was my third visit to Grenada, and I hope it won’t be my last.

In my job, one should be focused on new, international destinations, I suppose. But there is a short list of amazing places that I would love to return to, again and again.

Ireland, for example. The southern

tip of Italy. South-west England.

And Grenada is definitely on that list.

So, when they invite me, I go.

But while there, I figure that I should do my best to find new and different experiences to write about.

Being a sous-chef to Chef Janice fit that category perfectly.

Food is an increasingly important element of travel, anywhere in the world. More and more people are building travel itineraries around opportunities to enjoy local cuisine. Others may not make food number one, but still want to experience local food and drink.

It’s the opposite of what may still happen in large, all-inclusive resorts, where they offer food they think their guests – especially Americans – are comfortable with. I don’t want “comfort” – I want “authentic”.

When our group arrived for our visit to Mount Cinnamon, the chef’s table was set for the eight of us. But when our host asked, “Would anyone like to assist the chef?”, two of us immediately raised our hands, and were designated sous ¬– or maybe something lower than “sous” – chefs for the duration.

We stood behind the chef’s table, which was spread with an amazing array of ingredients. Some were obvious – large, freshly caught filets of fish (which turned out to be Mahi Mahi), the aforementioned onions, garlic, tomatoes, lettuce.

But then there were the many ramekins, filled with colourful and aromatic spices.

That made sense. Grenada brands itself as “the spice of the Caribbean.” Later in our visit, we toured the Belmont Estate, known for fantastic chocolate, but where

our guide, Kelly, began at a table laden with about three dozen kinds of fruits, nuts and spices, all grown commercially on the estate.

Just as the national symbol for Canada is the maple leaf, Grenada’s symbol is nutmeg, the signature spice of the island.

So while my colleague and I were assigned the more easily identified elements – onions, garlic, tomatoes – Chef Janice added a delicious and mysterious mix of spices to the food we were preparing.

After I was released – we won’t say “fired” – from my culinary duties, and had enjoyed the amazing meal we had prepared, I checked out the menu in the adjacent restaurant. The list of ingredients in the various dishes was mouth-watering: toasted coconut, rosemary, chives, chili oil, ginger, passionfruit, citrus, capers, thyme, cilantro, lemon, turmeric aioli, lime, tamarind chutney, mango, mint, parsley, basil, cinnamon, and more. Virtually all fresh from the island. And these are just the seasonings that accent the main ingredients!

The meal I – well, mostly not I – eventually served started with a very tasty Callaloo Soup (Callaloo is a leafy plant; the green soup included coconut milk, garlic, onion, chili peppers and pinches of sundry amazing spices from the magic ramekins.)

The main course was grilled Mahi Mahi garnished with tomato, onion and pineapple salsa, sauteed local vegetables (including chunks of yellow pumpkin), and twice-baked potatoes. I was involved in all of this… but, shall we say, my learning curve was a factor. I was cautioned not to over-stir the vegetables, and when it came

time to plate the meal, I forgot to start with the lettuce leaf that was supposed to be under the veggies.

So… I got that one. A victim of my own incompetence.

Although as I enjoyed every single bite of an amazing meal featuring fresh, local Grenadian ingredients and unique tastes, I did not feel at all victimized. Mostly, I felt lucky.

Local spices, fruits, vegetables and seafood are in evidence everywhere in Grenada, from the restaurants and pubs to the stalls in St. George’s Market to the hillsides where what might appear to

be forests are actually orchards where foods like nutmeg or papaya grow on trees that shelter the soil beneath them, where other foods and spices grow.

There are lots of reasons to visit Grenada – more about this in coming months – but for any visitor, the amazing local cuisine should be high on your list.

Highland Games interrupted by Mother Nature The 87th Embro Highland Games concluded with both triumph and turbulence after a sudden, intense rainstorm swept through Zorra Township late in the afternoon, forcing organizers to clear the main games field and bring outdoor festivities to an early close. By approximately 5 p.m., heavy winds and torrential rain pushed attendees to seek shelter, leaving the festival grounds nearly empty. Organizers quickly

transitioned operations indoors, utilizing the air conditioned Embro Zorra Community Centre arena and hall to protect displays and heritage exhibits—including the traditional MacKay tent—from the storm’s impact.

Their swift response ensured that cultural showcases remained safe and accessible despite the weather disruption. Earlier scheduled events were completed before the storm arrived. Heavy events ran to conclusion,

and the inaugural International Tug of War Championship delivered a standout highlight, with the Mount Vernon team securing multiple victories across several weight classes. The Games began the day with vibrant Canada Day celebrations, welcoming dancers, athletes, families, and visitors to Ontario’s oldest Highland Games. Rooted in nearly 150 years of local tradition, the Embro Highland Games once again honoured

the legacy of Zorra’s early Scottish settlers, who arrived in 1820 and helped preserve the language, music, dress, and athletic customs of their homeland. Since its founding in 1856, the Embro Highland Society has fostered an event that now attracts roughly 5,000 spectators and competitors annually.

This year’s program also featured massed pipe bands, piping competitions, caber tossing, and hammer throwing.
