Captain's Letter

Here we go again- the ladies are back to #InviteHer, 2.0 edition!

With the unseasonably warm winter, we have all had the itch to get those swings going and welcome back our friends in golf. This season we continue our focus and vision to #InviteHer to come out and play golf!

This campaign was launched by the LPGA to drive ladies to the game, and we’d love to do the same with our Granite ladies! Keeping this in mind for the season, please consider reaching out to #InviteHer, your GGC family and friends, to our events, clinics, and general play days that we have planned this season.

Spearheading our fantastic season of events is your 2024 ladies’ committee, comprised of Jennifer DevineDeveny (Vice-Captain), Morag Donald, and Carolyn Nemeth. We are happy to continue being supported by Associate Professional, Steve Dayman, and Head Professional Steve Halse.

Our Tuesday Afternoon Golf (TAG) 9-hole program, and Thursday Play days offer a fun and relaxed atmosphere to enjoy our course and just play golf. Our Ladies’ Academy is in full swing, with a variety of clinics offered throughout the season, tailored to all skill levels to either learn the game or refresh on the fundamentals. Of course, our favourite events are also back this season, including match plays, member/member, blind member/member, and our season long participation event, the House League race for the Tee Cup.

I would like to highlight our 2 upcoming events to kick off this season! The Fashion Show is planned for Sunday April 21, showcasing the many amazing golf apparel for purchase in the Golf Shop This afternoon event offers passed hors d’oeuvres and a light lunch during the show, featuring live models from our ladies’ section. Our Ladies’ Opening event will take place on Thursday May 9, with an afternoon shotgun and dinner to follow. This event is truly for fun and offers an opportunity to play in teams with other ladies to get back into the game and a chance for various on-course prizes. Registration is now open for the Fashion Show and all other event registration opens April 8!

For more information on any of our ladies’ events this season, please check out the ladies’ section of the website or app, the club calendar, or reach out to me or any of the ladies’ committee members.

I am so glad to return as your Ladies’ Captain this season and #InviteYou to #InviteHer, yet again, for a memorable and successful season with our fantastic ladies of Granite golf!

All my very best,

Welcome! Meet your Committee Members

Information- 2024 Thursday Play Day

What is Thursday Ladies’ Play?

Welcome to Thursday Ladies’ Play! This fun, open program is aimed at increasing participation and providing a fun ZERO stress environment amongst our female golfers. Every Thursday from May 9 to September 26, there is an opportunity to play a round of golf with fellow lady members. Just come out and enjoy! Tee times begin at 8:30. Your starting time, playing partners and format rules will be communicated to you on the Tuesday evening prior. There will be a registration table at the first tee, where you can check in and receive any additional information that may be required for the day.

How can I sign up?

We ask that you register for the Thursday Play Day program at the beginning of the season, even if you think you might only play once! Registering for the program can be done at any time during the season.

Once registered for the program, signing up for a weekly round is easy, and can be done in 2 ways:

You will receive a weekly email on Thursday evenings inviting you to participate in the following week’s round. Simply click YES or NO and your registration will be processed.

1. Online through Golf Genius. On a weekly basis, sign up for the next week’s round from the event homepage.

2. Is lunch provided?

The Ladies gather after their rounds to enjoy food and companionship either on our beautiful patio or at tables set indoors. Although not required, attendance can help develop and foster lasting friendships in golf. The cost of lunch will be the responsibility of the golfer. For those who need an On-the-Go order, meals can be ordered through the app at your convenience.

Can I bring a guest?

Guests are welcome to experience our Play Day for a reduced rate of $160. Guests are permitted on any Thursday Ladies’ Play, except for our Ladies’ organized event days. Information - 2024 Thursday Play Day

Who will I be golfing with?

Groups will comprise of 4 players unless it cannot be accommodated. You may sign up as a single or up to a foursome. Pairing details will be emailed on Tuesday evenings, along with any information regarding that week. The goal of Thursday Ladies’ Play is to interact with other members and have fun!

How can I do my part to keep the pace of play?

We aim to play the round in 4 hours or less, and here are a few tips to ensure all players are doing their part.

1.

Keep close to the group in front of you.

2. Always be ready to play your shot when it’s your turn.

3. Putt out instead of marking a very short putt.

4. Play ready golf if necessary.

5. Leave your clubs and equipment towards the next hole.

Is there an opportunity to learn new skills?

Prior to each tee time Steve will share a Thursday Tee tip by the first tee during registration.

What if I can’t play a full 18 holes?

Each Play Day is an 18-hole event. However, if you cannot complete all 18 holes (e.g. leave early or arrive late) you can still participate. You will be eligible to win on course games like Closest to the Pin or Longest Putts. If you cannot play a full 18 holes, still sign up, and we will drive you to your group when you arrive.

Is there a cost to participate?

There is no cost to play Thursday Play Day. Special Ladies’ events that are scheduled as part of our Ladies’ Program have a cost associated. Please check the Ladies’ Calendar for more details.

Weekly game: No charge

Optional skin game: $5 cash

Post round lunch: A la carte or special event menu

Information - 2024 Thursday Play Day

Weekly Skins Competition : What is Skins?

How much do you want to bet – for fun? Each week players can participate in a skins game. At registration those wishing to participate will contribute $5 dollars to participate. Skins is a holeby-hole competition, where the lowest NET score on each hole is awarded prizing. Any ties mean no one wins the hole. A Gross score is deemed to win over a Net score. The total purse is divided between any players who won a hole (skin). If there are no winners, all monies will be returned to the participants.

How do I keep score?

The Golf Shop will provide scorecard. Please turn in the completed scorecard following the round. Scoring may also be kept on the Golf Genius app for live leaderboard purposes.

What else do I need to know?

Participation points will be allocated to members based on our House League season-long experience. For more information on the House League experience, please refer to that section of the Program Guide.

Any on course game winners will be announced during the lunch social following the round.

Can matches be played on Thursday Play Day?

It can be difficult to schedule your Four Ball or Single matches during the season. Players may find that Thursdays are a convenient time to schedule their match, and they will be allowed. Due to the given pace of play issues with a Four Ball match, they must be played at the back of the group, but a Single match can go out at the front of the group as they do not typically affect pace of play. If the weekly format is a team competition, those players score will not count in the weekly prizing.

Handicap Rules and Posting of Scores from Match Play Competitions (for the match ladders). All participants in the match must post hole by hole scores for handicap purposes This includes scores made in match play, in which players have not completed one or more holes or in which players pick up when out of contention on a hole. The following are excerpts from the Golf Canada Handicap Manual:

TYPES OF MATCHES

Singles Match Play

In singles match play, the match is won by the player who is leading by a number of holes greater than the number of holes remaining to be played. After 100% handicap allowances are determined, the higherhandicapped player receives the full difference in Course Handicap between the two players; the lowerhandicapped player plays from scratch

Example: A player with a Course Handicap of 17 receives four strokes from a player with a Course Handicap of 13. The player receives them on the first four allocated handicap-stroke holes

Four-Ball Match Play

A match in which two players play as partners, scoring their best ball against the best ball of two other opponents Each participant plays their own ball to completion of the hole and the lower score between the two is the "best ball". The team with the lower best ball score wins the hole. After 90% handicap allowances are determined, the higher handicapped players receive the full difference in Course Handicap between them and the lowest player

The lowest player plays from scratch.

Example: Players have the following course handicaps after the 90% reduction. Player A is 9, player B is 16, player C is 20 and player D is 23 Player A would play off (0) zero strokes, player B receives 7 strokes, player C receives 11 strokes and player D receives 14 strokes. Note: The strokes received in Four-Ball match play remains the same even if the lowest handicap player is unable to play

DUTIES OF THE GOLFER

Arranging the Match

Players must arrange to play their match within the dates assigned for that round of the bracket. While scheduling the match assign one of the participants as the individual responsible for booking the tee time This individual shall also be responsible for notifying the Golf Shop of the match.

Players must make themselves available for multiple dates for each round of the bracket. Failure to provide an adequate number of available dates may result in the match being awarded to the other team/opponent should the match not be played by the final date for matches in that round of the bracket.

Matches can be scheduled by phone, email or through an electronic scheduling software such as Doodle. Participants may find that utilizing a scheduling software makes scheduling the match easier. Once the tee sheet is open for the date where the match is to be played the person that was made responsible for booking the tee time shall book the tee time on the Granite Golf website

When the tee time is booked please add a note to the booking indicating the match play competition it is for and that the tee time is a match so that the Golf Shop can prepare the scorecards in advance.

If you forget to notify the Golf Shop when booking your tee time please notify them as soon as possible prior to the match. The Golf Shop must be notified that it is a match prior to teeing off on the first hole.

Match Play 2024 Welcome to

Prior to the Match

All golfers must verify their handicap prior to the match.

All golfers are to obtain their scorecard for the match from the Golf Shop. The scorecard will have included dots at each hole where strokes will be given/received.

Golfers must verify that the handicap on the scorecard matches their handicap If using Golf Genius golfers must confirm that the handicap in Golf Genius also matches their handicap

Once each participant has verified that their handicap is correct they shall notify their opponent(s) of their handicap and confirm that the scorecard is correct prior to teeing off.

During the Match

Scorecards must be utilized. In addition, we strongly encourage using Golf Genius. Players are to confirm the status of the match after each hole is completed.

Once a hole is declared to have been won/conceded by both parties the result of that hole is final.

If there is some doubt about the result of a particular hole continue to play the match and resolve the issue with the Golf Shop upon the completion of the round

Once a match has been declared to have been won by both sides the result is final.

Match Play All Square After 18 Holes

If the match is all square at the completion of 18 holes a sudden death playoff shall take place and the match shall continue until one side wins a hole. The playoff should start on the hole where the match began and handicap strokes shall be utilized as in the stipulated round.

At the Completion of the Match

Notify the Golf Shop of the results of the match, submit one of the paper scorecards and let the Golf Shop know if the match was scored in Golf Genius.

For the match to be official hole by hole scoring for all participants must be provided.

The Golf Shop is responsible for ensuring the results are uploaded into Golf Genius and the Golf Canada You do not have to post your own scores to the Golf Canada.

Match Play 2024 Welcome to

UNFINISHED HOLES AND CONCEDED STROKES

A player who starts but does not complete a hole or is conceded a stroke must record for handicap purposes the most likely score. The most likely score may not exceed double bogey. This most likely score should be preceded by an “X.” There is no limit to the number of unfinished holes a player may have in a round, provided that failure to finish is not for the purpose of handicap manipulation

Most likely score is a judgment that each player must make based on the player’s own game It consists of the number of strokes already taken plus, in the player’s best judgment, the number of strokes needed to complete the hole from that position more than half the time. The player must evaluate each situation based on what the player can reasonably expect to score.

Example 1: A and B are playing a match On a hole on which neither player receives a handicap stroke, A has holed out in 4; B has a 30-foot putt for a 5 B has lost the hole and picks up B records X-6 on the scorecard because 6 is B’s most likely score.

Example 2: A and B are playing a match. On a hole on which neither player receives a handicap stroke, A is one foot from the hole, lying 4. B is 10 feet from the hole, lying 3. B putts and misses. They both concede a half. Both players record X-5 because that is their most likely score

HOLES NOT PLAYED

If a player does not play a hole the score recorded for that hole for handicap purposes must be par plus any handicap strokes the player is entitled to receive on that hole

If 14 or more holes are played, the player must post an 18 hole score. If 7 to 12 holes are played, the player must post a nine hole score. In either case, scores for unplayed holes must be recorded as par plus any handicap strokes that the player is entitled to receive on the unplayed holes.

If the match is decided prior to the competing 18 holes the scores posted for holes that are played after the match is complete shall be the actual scores that the player scores on the post match holes. To post in any other manner would be at odds with the basic premise that contends that each player will try to make the best scores at every hole in every round If the committee believes that the player is inflating their scores on post match holes it may apply provisions of Section 8 (Handicap Factor Adjustment)

SCORE TO POST IF MATCH ENDS IN FEWER THAN 18 HOLES AND PLAYER COMPLETES ROUND

Scoring Glossary

Various Forms of Play

All forms of play may be gross or net.

Gross Score

The score for either a hole or for the round before a player’s handicap has been deducted. (The actual score).

Net Score

The score for either a hole or for the round after a player’s handicap has been deducted.

Stroke Play

Players compete against the field for best total score.

Match Play

Match play refers to competition hole-by-hole between two players or two partnerships. The side leading by more holes than there are holes left to play is the winner. When considering handicaps, the lower handicap person plays at scratch or 0 handicap and the higher handicap player receives the strokes (difference between the player’s handicap and the opponent’s) 'where they fall’ as indicated on the scorecard. For example, a handicap of 22 becomes zero and a 29 receives seven shots for that match.

Stableford

Stableford uses a points system, where the better you score on a hole the more points you receive. The goal is to accumulate the most amount of points during the round.

Scramble

You may use a team of two, three or four players. A low and medium handicapper should be selected for each team. Each person on the team drives, and the best drive is then chosen. Everyone hits his or her second shot from where the chosen drive landed. The best second shot is now chosen and play continues in this manner, including on the green until the ball is holed out.

Better Ball or Four Ball—Best Ball

A match in which two play as partners, scoring their best ball against the best ball of two other players. Each participant plays the ball to completion of the hole and the lower score between the two is the ‘best ball’. The team with the lower best ball score wins the hole.

In stroke play, the total of the team’s 18 ‘best ball’ holes is compared to the rest of the field.

Foursome or Alternate Shot

A match in which two play against two, and each side plays one ball. In standard alternate shot, one member of the team tees off on the even- numbered holes and the other member on the odd-numbered holes. Each partner alternates hitting their team ball until the ball is holed out.

Modified Alternate Shot (Chapman)

Similar to foursome or alternate shot, except that each player tees off, then switch and hit each other’s ball for the second shots. The players then choose the best-positioned ball and play alternating shots until the ball is holed.

Granite Golf's

Basic Rules of Etiquette

This is YOUR Golf course. Enjoy it, repair it and appreciate its beauty!

Respect Time:

- For the honour system - the person with the lowest handicap tees off first.

- On subsequent holes, the person who scores the lowest score on the previous hole tees off first.

- If you decide to play ready golf – then the first person ready tees off. One practice swing should do!

- Keep up to the group ahead of you, versus close to the group behind you.

- If the hole ahead of you becomes empty, invite the group behind you to play through.

- Take no longer than 3 minutes to search for a missing golf ball

- 18 holes at Granite Golf should take no longer than 4 hours for a foursome

On the course:

- Quiet on the tee block… and green – respect that your fellow players need to concentrate.

- Be aware of where your ball landed and head for your ball immediately; then, prepare for your next swing. The furthest person from the hole swings first.

- Always replace divots when possibly. If you cannot replace them, use the sand and seed bottle.

- In the sand – avoid grounding your club, rake the trap and, leave the rake outside the trap where it will be out of the way of shots from other players.

On the Green:

- The player furthest from the hole putts first.

- Balls may be marked, particularly those on another player’s line.

- Avoid walking across the putting line of another player by walking around.

- Be mindful of your shadow if tending the flag. The flag may stay in the hole if player chooses.

- Repair ball marks - it only takes a few hours for the grass to die.

- Once your ball has holed out move on to the next tee. Track your score at the next tee block.

Equipment:

- Leave your clubs, golf cart, electric cart on the far side of the green, closest to the path to the next hole.

Food and Beverage:

- To keep the game in play, order your choice at the 9th tee block or before, and it will be ready to pick it up at the clubhouse on your way by.

- Enjoy your day – remember, a day on Granite Golf course is better than a day anywhere else!
