Welcome IN THE STÜRM UND DRANG OF LATE MAY – a week from our opening – Mar tin Smith was methodically getting the theatre ready, while Helen Sennett, Director of Operations, was figuring out whether – and where – 700 people would fit into the gardens – it was then that a journalist rang up, wanting some drama. “Tell me what has gone wrong,” he asked. Oddly – and disappointingly for him – nothing really had. Moreover, and perhaps even odder, at no point did it occur to me that the theatre wouldn’t open. It was obviously meant to be. I admit we were all shattered. But hey, that’s half the fun. We picked ourselves up, brushed ourselves down and the audience arrived – many thrilled by how close West Horsley is to London. We discovered that the gardens were an ideal size – (convivial but not a squash,) the acoustic was excellent and we managed to achieve the £10m fundraising target, thanks to the Williams family’s matching donation. However, don’t for a moment think you can relax. Now we’re aiming for £14m so we can build some exquisite lavatories and accomplish more great things. Next season, we are welcoming to the Theatre in the Woods, English National Opera’s brilliant orchestra for Verdi’s stirring Un Ballo in Maschera, and Gounod’s three-hanky masterpiece, Roméo et Juliette. We also don our chaps to welcome Oklahoma!’s 20-strong West End dance troupe. Besides superlative music, there is much else to look forward to: the cross-gar tered soft brickwork exterior, a balcony for fanfares, new quince trees, a gorgeous Walnut Tree Restaurant (in the orchard), and the opera house vestibule painted to Nicky Haslam’s instructions. There’s bound to be more. This massive achievement has also been a fairy tale, a story in which Bamber and Christina Gascoigne are the fairy godparents. See you in June.

Rodgers & Hammerstein OKLAHOMA!

The tradition of the Box Social is for women to decorate a box and fill it with a dinner for two. The boxes are anonymous and the men bid for them

to win the meal with the woman whose box it is. It is not unknown for a woman to drop hints to a favored man indicating which box is hers. 11

Rodgers & Hammerstein OKLAHOMA!

IN THE RURAL, OPEN, OPTIMISTIC heartlands of early 20th century

America, it’s a beautiful morning, the corn is high as an elephant’s eye, and two farm-girls are overwhelmed with offers to escort them to the square-dance – the Box Social. Through a sequence of some of the best-loved songs in Broadway history, the girls discover who they truly want. But in the process, a rejected suitor picks a fight – and almost turns a classic happy-ending into tragedy. BBC CONCERT ORCHESTR A

Charles Gounod ROMÉO ET JULIETTE OPER A IN FIVE ACTS SUPPORTED BY A SYNDICATE LED BY DAVID & AMANDA LEATHERS

SHAKESPEARE’S GREATEST ROMANCE is given the passionate

embellishment of Gounod’s music. Separated by a murderous feud between their families, Roméo and Juliette are impossibly in love. Walls close in, bodies pile up, and a rescue plan goes terminally wrong – though not before the closing duet which will ensure there is not a dry eye in the house. Where We Are BY CAR The new opera house is between Leatherhead and Guildford, 10 minutes from the intersection of the A3 & M25. Your guests can leave London mid- afternoon and arrive with time for a glass of champagne before the opera. A map may be downloaded from the website and a printed version will be sent with your tickets. BY TRAIN Horsley station a mile away with frequent trains from Waterloo, Vauxhall, Clapham Junction (45 mins). A shuttle bus meets trains and can be booked in advance on the website. Woking Station is 8 miles away (25 mins from London; 8 trains/hour). WALKING It takes about 20 minutes to walk from Horsley station – along

the railway line and then through estate fields.

Accessibility We ask that guests without good mobility are accompanied. SEATING When booking please indicate (a) whether or not you require a

wheelchair space (b) if you have other specific seating needs. Wheelchair spaces are at the Stalls level (ground level) only. There are no lifts. There are 12 steps to the Stalls Circle, 26 steps to the Grand Tier, and 40 steps to the Balcony. THE GARDENS West Horsley Place is an ancient site and the rabbits have

been there longer than us. Every rabbit hole we fill, two more appear. We have tried to make the grounds accessible. However, the orchard is uneven and gardens spongy. Mobility scooters cannot be used. There are accessible lavatories. INTERVAL DINING Closest to the theatre with the easiest access for wheelchair users and others with mobility issues, is the Walnut Tree Restaurant. Close by are the Orchard Marquees and Pavilions where you may book a table to picnic.

CONDITIONS OF SALE (i) If you are unable to use your tickets and we are unable to sell them, we will allow a member of staff to use them. This avoids gaps in the theatre (ii) Tickets may only be used by the purchaser and may not be sold on (iii) Grange Park Opera is a charity. To make your ticket money work to our best advantage we have split the ticket prices into two parts: one part is a donation and the remainder is liable for VAT. The donation element at The Theatre in the Woods is £30–£80. By doing this there is no additional cost to ticket buyers and more of your ticket money can go towards the operas. Gift Aid regulations mean we can also claim a further amount per ticket from HMRC. This practice is used by many charities. Without the donation element, we are unable to cover the festival costs.

We are legally bound, however, to point out that the donation element is optional. (iv) Latecomers will not be admitted to the auditorium and there will be no re-admission, unless there is a suitable pause. (v) The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to any ticket holder in reasonable circumstances including, without limitation, where the ticket holder breaches these Terms & Conditions, disrupts other audience members’ enjoyment or does anything that the Management considers to be unacceptable behaviour, taking health and safety, environmental and security concerns into account. The ticket holder will have no right to a refund, less a reasonable administration charge, unless the Management can resell their ticket. The Management reserves the right to change or cancel the advertised programme and artists due to unforeseen or unavoidable circumstances outside their reasonable control. See website for more information. TICKETS RETURNED FOR RESALE OR EXCHANGE
