Ted Emory Amick, 81, of State College, passed away on November 3, 2024, at Mount Nittany Medical Center . Born on September 19, 1943, in Windber, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Emory Earlston and Evelyn Shoenthal Amick . On August 17, 1974, he married the love of his life, Louise Detwiler Amick, who survives at home . They had just celebrated 50 years of marriage .
Ted graduated from Chestnut Ridge High School in 1961 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science and a master’s degree in Agricultural Education from Penn State . He began his career teaching at Chestnut Ridge before joining the National Grange, where he served as the organization’s connection to the Extension Program—known to many as 4-H—and to the National Future Farmers of America . He worked as a Project Manager with the Grange for nearly 20 years
In addition to his wife, Louise, Ted is survived by two daughters: Julia Amick of Bellefonte, and Sarah Amick and her partner, Rich Strayer, of Washington, D .C . He is also survived by two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Addison Stack of Bellefonte; his brother, Tom Amick of Chambersburg; sisters-in-law Lavern Penn of Hollidaysburg and Lorraine Araquistain of Trenton, Florida; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family . He was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Peggy Gates
Ted was a proud Penn State alumnus and an avid fan of Penn State sports . He was a member of State College Presbyterian Church and enjoyed tending both flower and vegetable gardens. He was an amateur photographer, a devoted cook, and especially known for the bread and sweet rolls he made for family and friends .
Those who knew Ted will remember his outgoing personality, gentle presence, and the warm conversations he shared, especially with neighbors who enjoyed many visits over the years Above all, he cherished time with his grandchildren and deeply loved his family .
Richard “Dick” Barry Weiss, 84, died in Washington, D .C ., on November 10, 2024 . He is survived by his partner and wife of 22 years, Nancy Flinn; his daughters, Robin Boies and Kelly Weiss; and a combined eleven grandchildren .
Dick was born on March 13, 1940, in Oak Brook, Illinois, to Julia Meehan Weiss and Louis Weiss . He grew up in Elmhurst, attended Elmhurst High School—where he served as class president—and went on to Dartmouth College, graduating with a degree in Spanish in 1962 . He earned his MBA from Dartmouth’s Amos Tuck School in 1964 . While still in school, he married his high school sweetheart, Karen Shields, and their two daughters were born during his college years .
In the late 1970s, Dick became Director of Marketing for Hollister, Inc ., helping to build marketing systems for its growing health care product line . He then joined the National Paint and Coatings Association as Director of Public Relations, overseeing major restoration campaigns for historic landmarks, including San Francisco’s Coit Tower, the Bronx’s “Last Hope Building,” and a Miami Art Deco hotel . This work earned the White House Private Sector Initiatives Award in 1987 . He also led a nationwide consumer campaign that reached over 80 million people and guided the association through emerging issues surrounding solvents and lead .
Dick later served as Senior Vice President for Public Relations at the National Dairy Board . There, he strengthened education programs, aligned them with national advertising efforts, and worked with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry to promote chocolate milk . For seven years, he ran The Weiss Consultancy, advising clients such as the International Food Information Council, the National Dairy Board, the American Digestive Health Foundation, the Disabled American Veterans, and the National Grange . His projects ranged from crisis communication plans for Mad Cow Disease to strategic planning for research on food-borne illness and national voter-registration efforts for disabled veterans .
Dick joined the National Grange full-time in 2002 as Chief Operating Officer, where he served until 2007 and continued afterward as a consultant . A dedicated member and past President of Potomac Grange #1, Dick reorganized the National Grange into functional areas—lobbying, sales and marketing, and communications He helped
expand member benefits and built coalitions with allied organizations and corporations . He also led a major grassroots education program on Medicare Part D, helping members and communities nationwide navigate the new prescription drug plan . His work left a lasting impact on the Grange and the rural communities it serves .
Dick remained active after retirement, including membership in the Washington Ag Roundtable, chairing the board of RetireSafe, and continuing to serve on the National Grange Advocacy Board .
He is remembered as a warm, supportive, and generous man and as a devoted golfer . The world is truly better for Dick Weiss having been in it .

Mary S . “Sharon” Croucher passed from this life on the evening of November 25, 2024, at home and surrounded by her husband of 58 years, Bruce, and their immediate family .
Sharon was born on April 24, 1944, at Clifton Springs Hospital, one of three children, and she remained a lifelong resident of Clifton Springs, New York . She graduated from Clifton Springs High School in 1962 as valedictorian and went on to earn both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in library science from SUNY Geneseo .
Her career as a librarian spanned both public and school libraries . She served the communities of Newark and Clifton Springs as a public librarian, and later worked as a school librarian in the Jordan–Elbridge and Phelps–Clifton Springs school districts Sharon married her highschool sweetheart, Bruce, and together they raised three children .
The Grange was a significant and lifelong part of Sharon’s identity. She joined Clifton Springs Grange as a teenager and remained a member throughout her life. She held many prominent offices at the local, county, state, and national levels . Together with her husband, she served as co-director of youth activities for the National Grange, shaping opportunities and leadership development for young Grangers across the country .
Sharon was predeceased by her parents, Clinton and Bertha Smith, and by her sister, Beverly Marvin . She is survived by her husband, Bruce; her sister, Pinky Tiebout; her three children—Peter, Andrew, and Karin— and her grandson, Carter Croucher . She is also remembered fondly by thirteen nieces and nephews .
Sharon will be remembered for her devotion to family, to education, and to the Grange, and for a lifetime of service to her community .

Joseph William Fryman, IV, was born on December 20, 1947, in Blair, Nebraska, to Olga and Joe Fryman Jr . He passed away on December 8, 2024, at the age of 76 Joe grew up on the family farm north of Blair with his two older sisters, Joan and Shirley . He attended Cuming City Country School, graduated from Blair High School in 1966, and earned his degree in accounting and economics from Dana College in 1970 . He was active in 4-H and FFA, drove a school bus during college, and later served six years in the U .S . Army Reserves, where he trained as both a radio repairman and a drill sergeant .
On May 22, 1971, Joe married Tamara “Tammy” Christensen . Together they raised three children—Erin Ring, Laura Jackson, and Matthew Fryman—and were blessed with six grandchildren: Hailey and Lanea Jackson, Nora and Lucy Fryman, and William and Tage Ring .
Joe and Tammy made their home on the Fryman family farm, which has been in the family for 150 years . They raised corn and soybeans, and in earlier years also hogs and cattle . Having grown up milking Jersey cows, Joe liked to joke that he and Tammy had a “prenuptial agreement” that excluded dairy cows from their operation . Alongside farming, Joe worked for H&R Block in Blair for 30 years .
Joe dedicated a significant portion of his life to public service. He served
nine years on the Washington County ASCS County Committee, several of those as chairman . He also spent 20 years on the Blair Community School Board, including five years as board president.
The Grange was a major part of Joe’s life . He and Tammy joined Riverview Grange in 1974, where he held numerous offices. He went on to serve eight years as Nebraska State Grange President, and later as National Grange Treasurer and as a member of the National Grange Board of Directors for many years . Through the Grange, Joe and Tammy traveled widely and built friendships across the country .
Joe was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church, serving on the church council, as president, as a Sunday School teacher, and as a confirmation mentor. More recently, he and Tammy attended Reach Church and Christ Lutheran Church, and he also served as a Stephen Minister .
Joe loved planning memorable experiences for others—family road trips, Nebraska State Grange bus tours, international travel with Tammy, and winter seasons in Arizona . Many cherished family memories were rooted in adventures he coordinated, from train trips to Montana to a Christmas spent in Hawaii .
He also enjoyed restoring old tractors and cars, reading farm magazines, playing card games, working crossword puzzles, and inventing silly party games for his grandchildren .
Joe is survived by his wife of 53 years, Tammy; his children and their families; his sisters, Joan Greene and Shirley Nyberg; his brothers- and sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, and friends . He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Olga; his infant sister, Joyce; his parentsin-law, Tage and Louella Christensen; and several brothers-in-law and a nephew .
On Friday, January 10, 2025, Margaret Ann (Weaver) Smithers, 82 years young, was called to Heaven . Margaret is survived by her husband of 61 years, Arvial (Jack) Smithers, son David Smithers (Marisa); daughter Deborah O’Toole (Tim), grandchildren Wesley and Nathan Smithers, Shannon and Hannah O’Toole, brothers Byron Weaver (Corina) and Kenneth Weaver, and cousins James Smith (Melba) and Dorothy Ries (Russell) .
Margaret was born on December 4, 1942, in San Antonio, Texas After graduating high school, she attended and graduated from business college . Shortly after graduation, she worked at Ft Sam Houston, where she met the love of her life, Jack, and they married on February 8, 1964 She volunteered and worked in the school system until starting her career in Civil Service as a secretary for 30 years . After retiring, she enjoyed spending time with her two Grandsons in Texas and traveling to Colorado to spend time with her two granddaughters who will all miss her tremendously .
Margaret had many hobbies over her lifetime, including sewing, square dancing, bowling, photography, playing rummy, and singing Karaoke . She served in her community with the David Crockett Grange, making many friends within this organization . She also traveled to different states annually to the National Grange Convention with her husband, Jack, the State Grange President, and she as the “First Lady” of the Texas State Grange .
Her humor, her ·singing, and her smile will forever remain in our hearts . She will be dearly missed by her family and friends .
Barbara Ann (Pagler) Rush, 85, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2025 . Born in Providence, Rhode Island, on October 20, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Dante and Marjorie (Roberts) Pagler and sister to the late Virginia Novak . She was predeceased by her daughter Joyce Chase, and is survived by her beloved husband of 63 years, Paul Rush, her granddaughter, Molly Chapman, and her husband Dylan, and many who lovingly knew her as “Nana Babs” . Barbara’s life was marked by her dedication to family, community, and service . For many years, she worked as an administrative assistant at Brown University, contributing to various departments . She also served as a volunteer EMT with her husband Paul in Western Coventry . Her service to her community extended beyond her work and volunteer efforts – Barbara was a remarkable leader within the Rhode Island State Grange .
As a past First Lady of the Rhode Island State Grange, Barbara made lasting contributions in leadership . She was a Past Voting Delegate of the National Grange, Past President of Moosup Valley Grange #26 and Kent County Pomona Grange #3, and served as Secretary Emeritus of both Moosup Valley and Kent County Pomona Granges for over 30 years . She and Paul also were a part of National Youth Grange for many years and travelled all over the country together to various Youth Grange events . She was also Junior Leader Emeritus of Moosup Valley Junior Grange #27, having served in that position with Paul, for 55 years . Recently, Barbara and Paul were honored by the National Grange and the Rhode Island State Grange for their lifetime of service, including recognition at the 80th anniversary of the Junior Grange . Paul is a past National Grange Gatekeeper . Barbara was also an active member of Summit Baptist Church, where she shared her faith and built lasting friendships . Barbara also loved to knit, having handmade many hundreds of baby hats for infants at local hospitals . Barbara’s legacy of kindness, decision, and service will love on in the hearts of all who knew her .
John J . “Jack” Cottrell III, 82, of West Kingston, passed away on Tuesday, May 6th surrounded by his family . Born in West Kingston, to his loving parents, the late J . Jesse Cottrell Jr and L Virginia (Kenyon) Cottrell . He was the devoted husband to Patricia “Patty” (Fish) for 46 years .
Jack held many jobs before beginning his career in the grounds department at the University of Rhode Island where he worked for over 25 years, until his retirement . When not working, Jack could often be found volunteering at the Richmond Grange, Washington County Pomona Grange or Rhode Island State Grange, and he was a member of all 3 organizations for over 65 years .
While his love of the Grange could be felt by anyone who spoke to him, his love for the Washington County Fair was even greater . Jack served as a volunteer from the founding of the fair, served as Chairman for 10 years, and as Entertainment Chairman for 30 years . His quick wit and sense of humor will be missed by those who knew him .
Jack is survived by their daughter, Roxanne Nelson, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were like family .
Michael Keller Lynch, age 72 of Newark, Delaware, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 19th, 2025 . He was born on October 25th, 1952, in Buffalo, New York, to the late Gerald Ackley and Marion Hedding Lynch .
A proud graduate of Newark High School, Class of 1970, Michael continued his education by attending classes at the University of Delaware . He then went on to serve his Country with honor in the United States Marine Corps, embodying a spirit of dedication and bravery that defined his life. He worked for Acme Markets for 41 years His life was a testament to dedication, service, and compassion . Michael was a dedicated and lifelong member of The Independent Order of Odd Fellows, joining Centreville Lodge #37 in 1989 . He served with great honor in numerous leadership roles, including Past Grand Master, Past Grand Patriarch, and Past Grand Secretary of Delaware Michael was also a proud member of The Canton and The Rebekahs . I
n addition, he was an active member of The Delaware State Grange, where he served as State Master from 2012-2020 and was named Granger of The Year in 2021 . His commitment to service was recognized nationally when he was awarded The Quilt of Valor at the National Session . Michael was a member of Harmony Grange #12 .
Michael was a passionate fan of baseball and football . He was a lifelong supporter of The Philadelphia Phillies and The Philadelphia Eagles rarely missing a televised game . He also found joy and serenity in nature, especially during quiet moments spent fishing, golfing or traveling with friends. Above all, Michael was a man who cherished friendship and family . He was blessed with many lasting friendships and met the love of his life, Helen Pierce Lynch, in 1986 . They were married in October of 1989 and shared over 35 wonderful years . Michael was a faithful member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, joining in 1990, and served on several committees .
Michael is survived by his loving wife Helen, sister Jane Ackley Lynch, his Goddaughter Alyssa Patel, Godson Aidan Blanco, and many loved ones .
Janet (Morvatz) Price, 76, of Monclova, Ohio, died from complications of diabetes on July 30, 2025 . She was born September 26, 1948, to Matthew and Margel (Wenner) Morvatz in Carrollton, Ohio . She married John Price on May 27, 1972, who survives at home .
Janet was a graduate of Carrollton High School and Akron University . She taught kindergarten until the birth of her son, Justin . Janet was deeply involved in the Grange at the local, state, and national levels, including many years of service in positions such as Ohio State Grange Ceres and Chair of the Ohio State and National Grange Deaf Activities .
Beginning in her teenage years, she became an advocate for the deaf and hard-of-hearing . She was an active member of Pickerington Peace United Methodist Church and helped coordinate the senior and women’s groups . Janet was known for her generous spirit—delighting in writing cards, sending gifts, and supporting various individuals and charities . An avid Ohio State fan, she was a resident of Pickerington for almost 38 years . However, Janet’s greatest joy was children . She dearly loved her three granddaughters, as well as her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews .
Janet is preceded in death by her parents and stillborn twins . She is survived by her husband of 53 years, John Price, of Monclova, and son Justin (Amy) and grandchildren Lucy, Josie, and Allison, of Waterville, Ohio, and many extended family members .
First Lady of the Kansas State Grange, 1984-1987
Vera LaVerne Reichardt Schif Smith, 88, of Burlington, Kansas, passed away on the evening of August 7, 2025, at the Life Care Center in Burlington .
LaVerne was born on February 25, 1937, in Spring Creek Township to Raymond Arthur and Elva Ann Reichardt . She was the oldest of three children, with brothers Raymond Jr . and Clason . She grew up enjoying family visits, train
trips to see grandparents, and life on the family farm . She graduated from Burlington High School in 1954 .
On August 26, 1956, she married Robert Randall Schif, and together they ran the Schif family farm west of Burlington, raising dairy cows—the first automated dairy farm in Coffey County—along with cattle, hogs, and field crops. They had five children: Randee Renee, Sheree Lynne, Kevin Keith (infant, deceased), Kristee Kaye, and Robert Randall II (Bob) . In 1978, the family moved to Burlington, where LaVerne worked at Douglass Realty and Auctioneering and later at Farm Bureau Insurance . Randall passed away in 1987, and in 1991, LaVerne married Merle “Smitty” Smith, sharing years of travel, fishing, and family memories until his passing in 2013.
LaVerne and her family were deeply involved in the Grange . She and Randall joined Otter Creek Grange #1493 and Pomona Grange #3, eventually serving at local, county, state, and national levels . In 1963, they were named National Runner-Up as Young Couple of the Year . LaVerne served as State Flora, State Youth Director, First Lady of the Kansas State Grange, and State Treasurer, and was honored as Kansas Granger of the Year in 2006 . One of her proudest moments was seeing 38 family members recognized as a 7th-generation Legacy Grange family at the National Grange Convention in Wichita . Merle joined her in the Grange after their marriage, and they were named Kansas State Grange King and Queen in 2001 .
Beyond the Grange, LaVerne was a member of Martha Chapter No . 73 of the Order of Eastern Star and volunteered with Friends of Coffey County Health System . She loved spending time with family and friends, driving tractors, cooking, milking cows, sewing—from toddler dresses to wedding gowns—growing flowers, baking, and creating cards for military personnel. She enjoyed games, puzzles, and spending time with her grandchildren, and was known for her warm smile and kind words .
LaVerne was baptized in 1949 and attended both Burlington United Methodist and Christian Churches throughout her life, valuing the support and kindness of her church communities .
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Randall and Merle, her infant son Kevin, brother LeRoy Reichardt, and several in-laws . She is survived by her children, Randee Farmer, Sheree Damashek, Kristee Strawder, and Bob Schif; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her brother Raymond Reichardt; her sister-in-law Sandy Reichardt; stepchildren and extended family; and countless nieces, nephews, and friends . LaVerne’s life was defined by love, family, faith, and service, and she leaves a legacy cherished by all who knew her .
First Lady of the Rhode Island State Grange, 1998-2002
Patricia “Patty” M . Cottrell, 73, of West Kingstown, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 9, 2025, surrounded by her loving family . Born in Warwick, Rhode Island, she was the daughter of the late Edwin and Edith (Harrop) Fish . She was the devoted wife of the late John J . Cottrell III, with whom she shared 46 wonderful years of marriage .
A proud member of the Richmond Grange, Washington County Pomona Grange, and Rhode Island State Grange for over 50 years, Patricia was deeply devoted to her community and cherished the friendships she made through her many years of service . Her love for the Washington County Fair was equally strong—she was involved for more than 30 years and could often be found there for most of the summer, sharing laughter, stories, and her love of tradition with everyone around her .
Patty was a Past First Lady of the Rhode Island State Grange, Past Delegate to the National Grange, Past member of the State Grange Executive Committee, current member of the State Grange Foundation, and Special Deputy to the State Grange Master .
Those who knew Patty will remember her love of life, her infectious laugh, and a smile that could light up any room . She had an enduring love for travel and adventure, often setting out on journeys near and far with friends and family . Whether exploring new destinations or enjoying simple moments close to home, she embraced every experience with curiosity, laughter, and warmth . She is survived by her daughter, Roxanne Nelson; her brother, Pete Fish (Paula); and her sister, Peggy Fish . She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends and extended family who lovingly knew her as “Grandma Patty . ”
Patty will be remembered for her kindness, her spirit, and her ability to make everyone she met feel like family Her legacy of love, laughter, and community will continue to live on through those who knew her best .
