"IT IS MY DESIRE AS SUPERINTENDENT TO CONTINUE TO TELL THE AMAZING STORY OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT." Superintendent's Letter As I look ahead to my fourth year in the Grandview School District and my second year as superintendent, I am excited for the bright future ahead of us. Our school district continues to be an amazing place as a community partner, a place to work, and a place for students to belong and be educated. I spent a lot of time over the past year introducing stakeholders to the board identified priorities of increasing college readiness, expanding career education opportunities, and introducing cultural competency. We made amazing strides in year one on these priorities. Some highlights include raising our third grade reading proficiency by 50% over the past 3 years, increasing the average ACT score for our juniors by almost a full point, and beginning presentations with every employee in the district on the importance of cultural competency. For the upcoming school year, we are excited to further our partnership with Honeywell through the expansion of our Project Lead the Way Program into the elementary school sites so all of our elementary students are exposed to engaging projects tied to various aspects of engineering. We will also be looking to partner with the businesses in our local community to provide mentors, and potentially internships, for our careerfocused students to provide them additional school-to-work opportunities during high school and help ensure our students can go directly into the workforce after high school, if that is their desire. Thanks to the generosity of the community through the passing of the bond issue in April, the district will also be renovating our industrial arts area at Grandview High School to provide additional training and career placement opportunities. It is my desire as superintendent to continue to tell the amazing story of the school district. To do this successfully, we must build upon the work that has been done but also continue to advance forward in all areas, especially academics. The education of the next generation of citizens is a tremendous opportunity and awesome responsibility. Thank you for trusting us with your students and for being a valued community partner. A LETTER FROM: WAYNE TERPSTRA BOE PRESIDENT Our district's mission is to prepare all students to be college and career ready through high quality instruction and meaningful relationships. Over the past year, the Board of Education has focused on three priorities that align with this mission: -Enhancing college preparation of students -Strengthening student career opportunities and awareness -Improving cultural competence for staff and students This issue of the School Report highlights some of the district's activities supporting these priorities. While a number of initiatives have been implemented in the school setting, there are also many opportunities for families, faith groups, community organizations and businesses to assist in each of these areas. Here are just a few suggestions: -Provide mentoring or internship opportunities for students or sponsor ACT testing fees -Participate in career days at schools to assist students in identifying career interests -Encourage students to read and to see the relevance of math in career choices -Become educated about cultural competency which can be defined as the ability to value, affirm and interact respectfully with persons from cultures, backgrounds and belief systems different from your own -Initiate conversations with young people about your career and college experiences and the value of respecting our differences -Emphasize work ethics at school that translate to the success in higher education and in the workplace We are fortunate to live and/or work in a student-centered community. -The Meadowmere Mechanical Maniacs robotics team competed at Regionals in February scoring the 2nd highest score in a robot game and all exemplary on the Core Values rubric. This is the 2nd year in a row that the team placed in a robot game out of more than 40 teams. Partnerships -Congratulations to our Honeywell H.O.P.E. Scholarship recipients! (Opportunity for Prosperity through Education) Kastavas Jackson Lakeicia Coleman-Wilson Dylan Hernandez The purpose of this scholarship fund is to provide talented high school students with a funded path to a postsecondary degree focused on a career in a manufacturing, trade or technical profession. Honeywell is a proud partner of Grandview schools. It provides mentoring, sponsorship and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs to our district. Athletics -Congratulations to our Grandview High School Varsity Boys' Basketball team for having a remarkable season. The team ended the 2016-17 season as conference and district champions. The boys went 24-5 this year. -Congratulations to our GHS Varsity Boys' Track and Field team on winning the 2016-17 District Championship. The team has won six state titles from 2011-2016 Technology The Grandview C-4 School District was awarded the 1Million Project from Sprint. This grant provides at home wireless devices for students at the high school who have slow or no internet access at home. We were awarded 1500 devices over 5 years. We estimate the total value to be over $500,000. New Administrative Team Member Angela Cordier has been selected, as the District Coordinator of Pupil Services. Ms. Cordier is a Grandview resident and comes to us with many years of K-12 experience in roles as a teacher, instructional coach, RPDC Resource Specialist and administrator.

21ST CENTURY TEACHING AND LEARNING
INNOVATION CLASSROOMS This fall a number of our Grandview C-4 students will walk into Innovation Classrooms and experience a unique learning opportunity in a non-traditional setting. This past school year five elementary school teachers throughout the district were selected to have Innovation Classrooms after going through an application process. Innovation Classrooms provide the selected teachers with an opportunity to develop out-ofthe box instruction. This opportunity encourages the teachers to research best practices in design, curriculum, instruction, technology, and assessment to build a model that can be implemented, studied and potentially grow. “For the past three years the Grandview C-4 Curriculum and Instruction Team has been discussing ways to work with teachers who would like to structure their classrooms differently to incorporate more engaging practices and student learning opportunities to drive the students’ motivation and curiosity," said Prissy Lemay, Director of Curriculum and Instruction. The success of the Innovation Classroom will be measured using the following objectives: 1.Measurable increase in the use of professional development opportunities. 2. Increased use of a wider range of researchbased instructional practices within the classroom. 3. Annual increase in standardized and district assessments. 4. Systemic demonstration and sharing of implemented practices.

Butcher-Greene fifth grade teacher Samantha Dane and Belvidere fifth grade teacher Tyler Stolberg will team up to create a problem-based, virtual learning innovation classroom. They will run the classroom based off a competitive business theme where students will be tasked with presenting solutions to each other. They will also work together to solve problems and create products needed by various clients. “Doing this will ensure that students realize there are multiple ways to solve any given problem. There will be a big focus on collaboration, whether it is within the student's own classrooms, with other grade levels, with mentors in the community or virtually across schools,” said Ms. Dane. Dane says students will be asked to complete research and writing activities, read various texts, create presentations, and incorporate science and math knowledge to solve these problems and complete the projects. They will integrate and use all the skills typical for a fifth grader (and beyond) in a real world setting. “We hope that this model will allow us to make learning more organic and help more students thrive and learn,” said Dane Other Innovation Classrooms will include a Balanced Literacy Classroom taught by second grade teachers Dan Huffman and Stephanie Griggs of Martin City K-8, and Conceptual Math which will be taught by DeLaina Ellis, a fifth grade teacher at Martin City K-8. This spring Jackson County voters within our district boundaries approved a $9-million no-tax-increase bond issue with a 74.18 vote. On behalf of the Grandview C-4 School District, I want to thank our community for the support for our schools. The passing of the no-tax-increase bond issue on April 4th allows the district to continue the extensive work on our facilities so we can maintain a positive learning environment for our students. Our goal is to continue to be good stewards of our finances and use the $9-million bond to ensure all buildings in the district reflect our high standards including proper repairs and renovation, student safety with necessary security enhancements, and assistance with our students' extra and co-curricular needs. It is important for our students and staff to know that they have the support of our community when it comes to helping the district succeed. They deserve the best that we can provide for them and this allows us to keep that standard high. Grandview C-4 Talent Recognition Awards Each year the Grandview C-4 School District recognizes the efforts of teachers, support staff, substitutes and volunteers. Staff at every building vote for a person in each category that exemplifies commitment, loyalty, and pride in educating our district’s children. The nominees go through an interview process conducted by a panel of community judges, and one is picked in each category to be announced as the district Teacher, Support staff, Substitute and Volunteer of the year. Congratulations to this year's winners!!
KRISTEN SCHAEFER, GRANDVIEW HIGH SCHOOL Ms. Schaefer is a language arts teacher at Grandview High School. According to her colleagues, she has high expectations for kids by making them think and prepare for college classes. She is a teacher-mentor and hosts student-teachers.
“Every day holds a new challenge with new rewards. Some days require you to dig deeper and help students connect and learn new material. I believe some of the best rewards are subtle acknowledgements from students, parents and staff,” said Schaefer.

Amy Blankenship is a Grandview High School parent and a dedicated volunteer of the GHS Touchdown Club. According to staff at GHS, there is nothing this volunteer would not do to help. She spends countless hours of time and lots of effort to make a positive impact on the school environment. She gives 100% to everything she does. Blankenship believes that all kids want to hear is that they are worth so much more, they can do it and they have support. “There are so many rewards to volunteering. Seeing students sign with a college to play a sport or go to college in general is one of my proudest moments,” says Blakenship. This will allow families to complete all necessary enrollment forms prior to Centralized Enrollment. If you do not have access to a computer to complete the online registration, there will be computers available at Centralized Enrollment. Follow these steps to Register Online: Log on to parentportal.grandviewc4.net 1-Click the red 'online registration' button 2-Complete all the registration forms 3-Hit 'Submit'

Step Two: Get your BULLDOG FAST PASS This year families enrolling students in our district have the opportunity to jump past the residency verification lines at Centralized Enrollment. By emailing the required residency documents to fastpassres@grandviewc4.net, you could be issued a BULLDOG FAST PASS. With this fast pass, there is no waiting in line to verify residency! Here's what you can do to get a fast pass. -If you are a new or returning family to the Grandview C-4 School District, please email a copy of your most recent mortgage or lease AND two current utility bills to fastpassres@grandviewc4.net. This documentation MUST be in the name of the parent/legal guardian of the student(s) being enrolled and must be dated within the last 30 days. No disconnect, shut-off, or late notices will be accepted. -Once this documentation is verified and accepted, you will receive your BULLDOG FAST PASS via email. -Take this email with you to Centralized Enrollment to indicate that you are clear to bypass the residency lines. -If the documentation received does not meet the guidelines to verify residency, you will be notified via email. Emailed residency documentation for the BULLDOG FAST PASS will be processed beginning Monday, July 3, 2017 and will close at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, July 28, 2017. SCHOOL REPORT | 10

Residency Requirements: If you own or rent/lease property within the Grandview C-4 School District attendance boundaries, the following documentation must be presented at your school to verify residency: - Current mortgage coupon or rental/lease agreement with landlord information and signature. - Two CURRENT utility bills (gas, electric, water, home telephone or cable) in the resident’s name, which are no more than 30 days old; no final or disconnect notices will be accepted. -If enrolling a student as a custodial guardian, you must provide court documentation or a letter of placement by a social services agency as proof of guardianship. If you reside with someone who owns or rents/leases property within the Grandview C-4 School District attendance boundaries, an Affidavit of Residency will be required. In addition to completing the affidavit forms, the following documentation will be needed from the Grandview C-4 School District resident AND the parent/legal guardian to verify residency:
Step Four: Immunizations Current students should bring any updated immunization records to enrollment. Students new to the district or returning after attending elsewhere need to bring their entire immunization record. State requirements are available on our website www.grandviewc4.net. The Jackson County Health Department will be providing free TdaP, MCV, and HPV immunizations during the first day of Centralized Enrollment on August 2nd from noon to 6:00 p.m. at Grandview High School. Please bring your immunization record with you.

New School Year,
New Buses
Many Grandview C-4's students will be riding to school in style this Fall. The Grandview C-4 School Board approved the lease purchase of 13 brand new buses. The new buses will replace several aging buses and bring the average age of the fleet from 15 years to just over 8 years old. The new buses will have automatic doors and improved camera systems. The cost for the new fleet is approximately $993,363.44, which is funded through the district's general operating funds. The pictures included are similar to the buses that will be coming in after school starts this Fall.
