Superintendent's Letter: Happy New Year!

The month of January represents the fresh start of a new year after a period of remembrance of the passing year. For me personally and for the district, 2016 has been an amazing year filled with many positives.

July 1st I started my tenure as the superintendent of Grandview C-4 schools. This was a goal that I set for myself several years ago and a role that I take very seriously. I am honored that I was selected to lead this incredible group of staff and students into the future.

As a district, we are always proud of being awarded full accredited status from the state of Missouri. We are seeing our literacy scores rise, enhancing our Project Lead the Way program at the middle school and our graduation rate continues to be above the national average.

For the rest of the 2016-17 school year, the theme for us must be #FinishStrong. The board has set goals this year which include improving the college and career readiness of our graduates. This begins at our early learning center and continues until our students walk across that stage. Another goal is cultural competency. Cultural competency is having an awareness of one’s own cultural identity while expanding cultural knowledge through interactions in multicultural settings, and the ability to learn and build on the varying cultural and community norms of students and their families. We must continue to help our students navigate through this diverse and ever changing world as they become the next generation of leaders in our country.

Thanks for all that you do for the Grandview School District. We intend to always make you proud to be a Bulldog!

HONEYWELL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Honeywell Opportunity for Prosperity through Education (H.O.P.E.) Scholarship

Honeywell is teaming up with the Grandview C-4 School District to provide full-tuition college scholarships for Grandview High School students.

The purpose of this scholarship fund is to provide talented high school students who are economically challenged with a funded path to a postsecondary degree focused on a career in a manufacturing, trade or technical profession.

To be eligible you must be a high school senior, and: 1. have a minimum GPA of 2.8, 2. plan to pursue a manufacturing or trade degree, and 3. be graduating from Grandview High School.

Community service and extracurricular activities are a plus. Applicants must maintain a clean background record.

Deadline for the scholarship application is March 15, 2017.

This scholarship will be renewable for up to 5 years, pending good academic standing. Students must complete the Educational Budget section of the application.

GC-4 COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT 2017 POINTS OF PRIDE

Student Achievement - The district continues to be fully accredited and three of our school sites scored in the ‘Accredited with Distinction’ category. (Conn-West, Butcher-Greene and Belvidere elementary schools) Belvidere has scored 100% on the APR for 3 straight years.

- Conn-West increased their score 10.7% to achieve 97.1%.

- Across the district, our students made gains in key subjects such as English and Math. In 2015 and 2016, more than 50% of our students scored in the top two levels on the English assessment.

- The district’s 4-year graduation rate continues to be above the national average.

Athletics - GHS Hall of Fame introduces first year inductees.

THE VALUE OF SCHOOLBUSINESS PARTNERSHIPS Wayne Terpstra, BOE President Studies show that a lack of relevance is a key reason why many students are not fully engaged at school, fail to pursue higher education, or in worse case scenarios, become dropouts. That is why schoolbusiness partnerships are so beneficial to student success. Through these partnerships, students gain a broader understanding of career pathways and enhanced opportunities for career success, while employers help grow more knowledgeable future employees and consumers.

There are a variety of opportunities for small business owners to major employers to partner with Grandview C-4 to enhance the educational experiences of our students. I want to thank the many businesses and community agencies that offer internships, mentoring, teacher grants, tutoring, scholarships, materials and financial resources for the benefit of Grandview C-4 students, and encourage others to get involved.

Board Of Education News: -New Board Member Chuck Cornforth took the oath of office at the December board meeting.

Cornforth retired from the Grandview C-4 School District in 2015 as Transportation Director. He is also a longtime resident of Grandview and a GHS alum.

Bond Issue

Bond Breakdown The Board of Education approved the placement of a $9 million no-tax increase general obligation bond issue on the April 4, 2017 ballot for voter consideration.

Funds would be used to pay for renovation and remodeling of existing school buildings.

Election day is April 4, 2017.

If passed, the bond will provide $9 million to fund capital improvement projects.

Last bond approved by 70-percent of voters was in 2013, in the amount of $9 million.

Without this funding, renovations and improvements would either be deferred or be supported through the district’s general fund operating levy, The general fund is used for salaries, benefits, and the district's daily operations.

Ballot Language

Shall the Board of Education of the Consolidated School District No. 4 of Jackson County, Missouri, without an estimated increase in the current debt service property tax levy, borrow money in the amount of Nine Million Dollars ($9,000,000) for the purpose of completing renovation, remodeling and repair improvements to the existing facilities of the District including, without limitation, fire safety upgrades, safety and security upgrades, heating, ventilation and air conditioning improvements, window and roof replacement where necessary, parking lot improvements, classroom and restroom renovations, athletic facility upgrades, musical instrument replacement; and issue bonds for the payment thereof? If this proposition is approved, the adjusted debt service levy of the School District is estimated to remain unchanged at $0.80 per one hundred dollars of assessed valuation of real and personal property.

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH

Project Lead the Way Expands to All Elementary Schools Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Launch will now be introduced to kindergarten thru second grade students at all Grandview schools starting next school year. The expansion will allow students to have the opportunity to explore the PLTW initiative as part of their science classes.

PLTW Launch is a Project Based Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) curriculum that introduces students to career paths in Engineering, Computer Science, and the Biomedical Sciences.

"Therefore, students who know problem-solving strategies, think critically and creatively, communicate and collaborate with others, and persevere when something does not work the first time, will have the skills necessary to be successful in the present and the future. By starting at the elementary level with our PLTW curriculum, Grandview provides our students with a greater opportunity to acquire the life-long skills needed now and in the future," Cรณrdova adds.

PLTW Launch requires students to collaborate around a design problem and work together, problem solve, and create solutions for that problem. Students who become interested in the three career pathways offered through PLTW have opportunities to further explore those fields through programs available at Grandview Middle School, Martin City K-8, and Grandview High School.

During the 2015-2016 school year, fifth grade students at Belvidere Elementary participated in a pilot of the Project

Lead the Way Launch program. This year fifth grade students at Meadowmere and Butcher-Greene joined in the fun.

GC-4 ATHLETICS

HALL OF FAME HONORS GHS ATHLETES This fall, Grandview High School established the prestigious tradition of honoring the best of the best in Bulldog athletics.

The athletic hall of fame inducted 28 athletes as its first class.

The Grandview Athletic Hall of Fame award recognizes and honors outstanding achievements of individuals, coaches, and others who have made significant contributions to the athletic program and have been instrumental in promoting the growth of athletics at Grandview High School.

The high school’s Athletic Department welcomed its inaugural class of inductees in October. Alumni athletes and coaches came back to GHS from all over the country to participate in Hall of Fame weekend.

“Obviously Grandview has a rich tradition in athletics.

Being a part of the inaugural class is pretty special," said Josh Freeman, honoree.

Freeman was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft. He played there until 2013.

He's also played for the Minnesota Vikings and the Indianapolis Colts.

"A lot of these guys are guys with very storied careers and it’s really cool to come back,” he said.

The hall of fame weekend festivities included recognition during halftime at a football game, a reception, a tour of the high school and an awards ceremony.

"The Hall of Fame weekend was one of the best received events I've ever been a part of. All the inductees, along with their families and friends, were so thrilled to be invited and honored by the district.

“OBVIOUSLY GRANDVIEW HAS A RICH TRADITION IN ATHLETICS."

They were all so impressed with the building, facilities, and staff in our district," said Steve Robertson, GC-4 Athletic Director.

Every year new members will be accepted into the Hall of Fame. The honorees are nominated by the community, then selected by a committee.

The high school is now accepting nominations for the 2017 HOF class. Nominations are open to the public. Forms are available at the Athletic Director's office, the high school office, GC-4's central office, or it may be downloaded from the high school website (ghs.grandviewc4.net).

Anyone may submit a completed form to the athletic director for consideration anytime during the school year.

Nomination forms need to be submitted by March 31 to be considered for selection that year.
