I have said it before and will say it again; our students are the future. They continue to rise above the hardships, stereotypes, and chaos that has been unduly placed upon them. From Project Lead the Way, the robotics program, our athletics program to our relationship with Cornerstones of Care, the district continues to invest in the future of our district. The strong relationships that we have with the City of Grandview and various community partners are a testament to the solid foundation of growth and support that we have built.

We have great leadership and it is showing in our daily journey. The district leadership, city leadership, local businesses, and the community are all working together for a better Grandview. All of this is awesome, but there is still more to be done. We have much more to accomplish, but we are making strides, measuring along the way, making sure we are accountable to our students and you. Even with the foundation we have, we need you, the community, to continue stepping up; making time to work with, talk to, assist and love on our children. Even if you do not have a child in our district, we still need your support. We are in this together. Use us as a resource if you need assistance with homework, communication, etc. There are means of support at each of our school buildings.

Strategic Planning Process Continues This strategic planning process will take place over the next several months and will guide our district for the next five years.

Safety and Security Upgrades

The Board of Education recently approved the installation of 137 state-of-the-art surveillance cameras and software at Grandview High School. A new front door camera and entryway system were also installed.

GHS Graduation Rate Continues to Climb Eighty-nine percent of our seniors graduated within four years this year. The number is an improvement from last year’s 86%.

The graduation rate is well above the national average for public high schools. We are proud of all of our staff and students who worked so hard to reach this accomplishment.

Front entryway improvements also took place at Grandview Middle School. The middle school received a similar security vestibule as the high school.

GHS Student is 1 of 40 in the U. S. to be Recognized for Technical Achievements GHS senior Chayanne Sandoval-Williams was one of 40 high school women to be selected by the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) to receive the 2019 NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing (AiC)

Battle of the Brains Grand Opening This is the year of the grand opening for the 2019 Battle of the Brains exhibit at Union Station’s Science City. CAIR’s FOCUS students will have their names indefinitely stamped on the million dollar exhibit in the heart of Kansas City.

The grand opening will be held on March 7!

Teachers Nationwide Visit District PLTW Classrooms Teachers from several different states visited Belvidere Elementary and Grandview Middle Schools to check out their Project Lead the Way (PLTW) classrooms. Their visit was part of the Project Lead the Way Regional Summit held in Kansas City, MO in November. Visitors toured the PLTW classrooms and spoke with students and teachers about their curriculum and projects. Only three schools in the entire metro area were invited to host a tour and two of those three were in our district!

South KC Alliance Selects GC-4 for Outstanding Educational Achievement Recently the South Kansas City Alliance selected the Grandview C-4 School District as the recipient of the Outstanding Educational Achievement Program Award for Project Lead the Way! The nomination detailed the work being done in the district to provide ALL students access to STEM education.

Grandview HS Student, Was a Recent Guest on The Steve Harvey Show!

Trenton Clark received recognition and a scholarship for his work in wig design and styling.

The District Implements a Suicide Awareness and Prevention for Middle & High School Students Called Signs of Suicide (SOS) SOS is a national school-based prevention program with four main goals. They are: -To decrease suicide and suicide attempts by increasing student knowledge and attitudes about depression.

-To encourage students to seek the help of a trusted adult on behalf of themselves or a friend.

-To reduce the stigma of mental illness and to recognize the importance of seeking help or treatment.

-To engage parents and school staff as partners.

Elementary Lego League Teams Take on First Robotics Regional Competition The Meadowmere Mechanical Maniacs advanced to the First Lego League Regional Tournament for the 4th year in a row. Their performance at their qualifying tournament included a 1st place in Best Robot Performance and Best Project.

Conn-West Mechanicougars made school history by winning the Judge's award at a First Lego League qualifiers meet in December. The team is made up of all girls who worked for 12 hours straight at the competition. Their hard work paid off in major ways. This was the first lego league award Conn-West has ever won!

Marching Band Takes on Disney World Grandview High School students in the Blue and Gold Brigade Marching Band traveled to Orlando during Winter Break. The band marched in the New Year’s Eve Disney Magic Kingdom Parade.

GRANDVIEW C-4 STUDENT'S UNION STATION EXHIBIT OPENS IN MARCH The countdown is on! This is the year of the grand opening for the 2019 Battle of the Brains exhibit at Union Station’s Science City. CAIR’s FOCUS students will have their names indefinitely stamped on the million dollar exhibit in the heart of Kansas City.

"The butterflies are rebuilding in my stomach, it feels like accomplishing a major milestone. Initially, the finish line was so far over the horizon; now it is within sight! This once in a lifetime opportunity is almost to fruition; it's bittersweet," said Calvetta Leeks, FOCUS teacher.

Last year CAIR's Focus program edged out 820 exhibit ideas to win the grand prize in the Burns and McDonnell Battle of the Brains competition. The CAIR Focus program received a $50,000 grant, which students used for technology upgrades in the classroom.

"I still can't believe that we won and I am so excited to see our dream become a reality," said DeVon Jones, FOCUS student.

Students have been working year round since the competition. At the beginning of this school year, students met with various Burns and McDonnell professionals that included engineers, architects, and construction managers.

"The journey we have taken was incredible. I would do it all again," said Sebastian Williams, FOCUS student.

Each student worked to perfect their project’s design and come up with a new name since their exhibit’s name, ‘The Big Brain Theory,’ was already trademarked. The efforts all lead up to the moment of the big reveal at Union Station.

"We are an amazing district with amazing students, and I hope that our exhibit will be a reminder in believing that all things are possible if you just believe," said Vicki Adams, FOCUS teacher.

The grand opening will be held on March 7 and is open to the public. Information will be posted on the district website www.grandviewc4.net.

SAFETY AND SECURITY UPGRADES

GRANDVIEW HIGH SCHOOL NEW CAMERA SYSTEM

GHS NEW SECURITY FRONT DOOR ENTRYWAY GRANDVIEW MIDDLE SCHOOL NEW SECURITY FRONT DOOR ENTRYWAY New updates that will enhance the safety and security of our district buildings took place at Grandview High School and Grandview Middle School throughout winter break.

The Board of Education recently approved the installation of 137 state-of-the-art surveillance cameras and software that was installed at Grandview High School before the winter break. Some of the new cameras are multi-sensor cameras, which can be the equivalent of 194 cameras throughout the building. The new camera system provides coverage for the entire GHS campus including the field house and football field. There is also specific coverage for hallways, doors, and high-security areas.

A new front door camera and entryway system were installed. This will create an extra layer of safety when visitors enter the building.

Front entryway improvements are also taking place at Grandview Middle School. The middle school received a similar security vestibule as the high school. It includes a double passageway system divided into two separate compartments, one for entry and one for exit.

These projects are the latest bond projects for the 2018-2019 school year.
