Letter
Happy New Year! It is exciting to welcome in another calendar year and we are looking forward to even more progress in 2018! The year 2017 highlighted several monumental accomplishments such as, an improved graduation rate, increased ACT scores, and another year of accreditation through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. I am very excited about the continued expansion of our Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Program, which continues to provide our students with exposure to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math curriculum through real world scenarios and problem solving. This year, the Grandview C-4 School District was designated a 100% K-12 access district, ensuring that ALL of our students have the opportunity to participate in these projects. You will see more of the amazing things our teachers and students are doing as outlined in this report. However, nothing will top ending the 2017 calendar year with our students being on the front page of the Kansas City Star for winning the Battle of the Brains competition. We are so proud of how our students created their project which was selected to be part of a $1,000,000.00 exhibit created at Union Station in KC. Our CAIR Focus program is made up of students from each of our elementary school sites and represents the remarkable things that our teachers and students are able to accomplish.

And we are only half way done! I am looking forward to sharing more progress toward our board priorities of Cultural Competency, College Readiness, and Career Readiness as the year progresses. These will be highlighted by our efforts to continually increase our graduation rate and ACT scores, but to also expand our career exploration exposure to all K-12 students. The career explorations will include expanding the community presentations to elementary school students and implementing internship opportunities for our high school students. The future is bright in the Grandview C-4 School District and I am proud to be your superintendent. Thank you for trusting us with your students and for being a valued community partner.

Dear Grandview C-4 Community, Happy New Year! I have been on this school board for almost 12 years and I cannot tell you how honored and proud I am to represent Grandview! I have been a resident for over 23 years. I’ve seen the growth and development of the district and it has been truly amazing. We are a strong, supportive and vibrant community made up of a variety of rich and diverse cultures. #WeAreGrandview! To kick off the New Year, we must continue our efforts to provide the best opportunities for our children to not only survive, but thrive in this ever changing world. We must teach them to learn, develop, communicate and grow as future entrepreneurs, engineers, electricians,

doctors or whatever their dreams may be. We must do better as parents, guardians, role models and lead by example, as we encourage them on their paths to adulthood. Make time to communicate with one another, read, play and eat dinner together. These are all things that we can do that do not cost a lot of money; it is a wise investment of time. Our children need to know that we care and are there for them. The Board of Education will continue to support the many initiatives that make Grandview C-4 the gem it is including: • Educational and life preparation programs such A+, STEM, fine arts; • A safe, collaborative place to learn and work; • A proud academic and athletic institution; • A district and city in sync with one another. These are but a few! We have come a long way, and we have a long way to go. Let’s continue to work together, learn from the journey and grow better together! Thank you!

It’s positive, it’s personal, it’s pizza! In the past two years the Grandview Police Department has had a new community engagement program at Grandview High School called ‘Pizza with Police.’ The program is a part of the department’s 'Move Toward the Badge' initiative.
The goal is to have officers connect with the diverse class of high school seniors in a positive environment and under positive circumstances.
“Building relationships with our diverse student population is imperative to maintaining trust and keeping the lines of communication open,” said Superintendent Dr. Kenny Rodrequez.
Officers with the Grandview Police Department share lunch, play games, chat and get to know Grandview High School Seniors. In a four month time span, officers aim to have the opportunity to connect with every senior in the school.
“Often times the students' only interactions with our officers is when they are in a direct law enforcement or security role,” says Grandview Police Chief Charles Iseman. “We are hopeful that events like these will open the lines of communication with our local students who are the City's future leaders. Who knows, maybe some of them will be inspired to choose a career in law enforcement.”
A $2,000 grant from the Truman Heartland Community Foundation pays for Pizza with Police. As part of the program, GHS seniors were asked to complete a survey measuring their thoughts and attitudes toward law enforcement officers. Early results show many students have positive interactions with the school’s full-time Grandview Police School Resource Officer, but would like to see more officers and positive police events at the school.

Reader Leaders are volunteer reading advocates in our district who lead by reading to a Kindergarten through fifth grade student or being reading listeners in a small group setting. Reader Leaders are friends, mentors, and academic resources for students. Sign up to be a Reader Leader at any school’s front office or at Central Office. health perspective. It dives deep into a very complex topic, the brain, and uncovers how it controls literally everything we do as humans. One part of the brain tests your memory - while another regulates motor movements. The exhibit idea is an engaging discovery of how the brain affects our five key senses: taste, touch, hear, smell, and vision. Throughout 2018 students will meet with Burns and McDonnell architects and engineers to design their proposal. The grand opening for their exhibit ‘The Big Brain Theory,’ will be in February or March of 2019.
