A2 | NEWS NEWS BRIEFS GV COVID-19 CAMPUS DATA UPDATE

The GVSU community has had a cumulative total of 3,824 cases since Aug. 1, 2020. The university’s update for this brief was from Friday, Oct. 8.

Through testing results this past week, GVSU’s Virus Action team have so far reported 75 current active cases including four faculty members, five staff members, 7 on-campus students, 26 “off-campus Ottawa” students, 29 “off-campus Kent” students and four “off-campus other” students with active COVID-19 cases.

“Current active cases” is the count of positive cases reported to the Virus Action Team over the past ten days.

This is an estimate of those currently in isolation, assuming a ten-day symptomatic period following the reporting of a positive test result. Actual periods of isolation are specific to the individual and determined by the county health department.

Testing and Incidence: GVSU’s own testing program has performed 99,364 tests overall since August 1, 2020, for a cumulative positivity rate of 1.37% from the latest update as of last week. A total of 1,365 tests were performed over the last seven days.

“GV Surveillance” includes the GV/ Spectrum administered programs of randomized testing, regular testing of high-risk groups, and invited testing of individuals connected to potential clusters. A calendar is available. “GV Total” includes surveillance testing plus all symptomatic/exposure tests administered by Spectrum.

Vaccination: GVSU encourages all students, faculty and staff to receive the COVID-19 vaccination as soon as possible. All students, faculty and staff are required to be fully vaccinated by Sept.30, barring a medical or religious exemption or postponement. According to the COVID-19 data dashboard, 80% vaccination rate in the GVSU community is required to reach herd immunity and minimal virus transmission.

Currently, approximately 78% of students report being fully vaccinated, while approximately 88% of faculty and staff reports being fully vaccinated.

FALL 2021 COMMENCEMENT

Grand Valley State University announced that the Fall 2021 commencement ceremony in person on Dec. 10 and 11.

The ceremony has been held virtually since spring of 2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

There will be no student procession, but students will be permitted to walk across the stage to receive their diplomas. The deans will welcome each individual college and the names of graduates will be displayed. Each student will be allowed to invite up to four guests to attend their ceremony.

Passion meets compassion: Battle of the Valleys benefactor speaks to student protesters attending Student Senate

The general assembly of Grand Valley State University’s Student Senate on Oct. 7 was met with a striking rebuke of the Senate from groups of students – but also with a message of compassion from its guest speaker.

Thursday’s meeting was scheduled to largely center around hearing from GVSU’s Battle of the Valleys benefactor and presenting them with a check for over $3,000 raised by the Senate throughout last week. But the focus quickly transformed into a public referendum of the Senate, with a large number of students participating in public comment to express what they believe has been a lack of Senate action regarding the university’s ongoing campus dining circumstances.

“There’s a lot of just sitting going on from last year that I’ve witnessed from Student Senate and the Grand Valley administration – not much getting out there and trying to help,” said Ryan Ruiz, a member of Grand Valley’s Young Democratic Socialists of America.

from school districts like Chicago Public Schools, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

The protesters also made mention of actions by student governments at colleges including Loyola University Chicago and Purdue University to advise ending university contracts with the company. Such actions, they believed, justified the students’ frustration with GVSU’s Student Senate for not taking similar action.

“One parallel that I unfortunately still can-

not draw is the action that these student governments are taking for their students because there has been no action on behalf of our student government,” said Alex Hicks, a member of the student body who has provided comment at several of the Senate’s general assemblies already.

On Oct. 1, FAFSA and scholarship filing opened to the public. The process affects millions of students’ college finances annually, and the upcoming 2022-23 academic year will be no exception. At Grand Valley State University, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships is kickstarting an initiative to help students with the filing process.

them assistance based on their information. In 2020, students at GVSU were awarded over 50 million dollars in need-based grants alone, according to the GVSU Accountability Report. A large portion of which can be attributed to filing the FAFSA. Ben Rhodes, Assistant Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships, said that although expenses are a stressful part of going to college, the FAFSA can help alleviate some of these anxieties.

“I think that’s why we’re trying to really push FAFSA filing right now, to make sure that all our students have access to some type of financial aid,” Rhodes said.

The upcoming FAFSA requires that financial information from the 2020 tax year be filled out in the document.

For many students, this may seem like a daunting task, as the COVID-19 pandemic put countless families in financial distress. However, this does not mean that students will be negatively affected in the FAFSA by these unforeseen circumstances.

“I think that students sometimes have difficulty understanding that when they fill out their information, they don’t realize that we can adjust

those based on things like job loss, divorce or a death in the family,” Rhodes said. “We’re expecting that next year the number of special circumstances and hardship requests for additional support will increase dramatically.”

Although many see the FAFSA as a complicated form, some of the most common difficulties students encounter have an easy fix. Forgotten passwords, incorrect spellings, and other minor errors make up the majority of problems that students encounter while filling out the FAFSA. “There can be some confusion when parents and students fill out separate sections,” Rhodes said. “We always encourage students and parents to fill out the FAFSA together, because that tends to make things a little bit easier.”

Rhodes said he recommends that students write down all their login information and keep it in a safe place to make the logging-in procedure easier in years to come.

Reading Tutoring, is designed by GVSU faculty, the GVSU College of Education in the literacy department and reading specialists to put emphasis on teaching literacy properly.

“What they found when they volunteered last year was that students were showing up and needed help in reading, but unless you were a reading teacher, you didn’t really know how to support them properly,” Vosburgh said.

The contracted Targeted Reading Tutoring recruits and hires tutors- students from GVSUwho in return get an additional level of training around how to teach reading properly. The tutoring revolves around aspects like vocabulary, comprehension and sound manipulation.

“It creates a structured space. If you’re a second-grader, you’re going to meet with your tutor four times a week for thirty minutes,” Vosburgh said. “There’s going to be a lot of engagement and motivation involved.”

The university pays students to tutor within K-12 connect, in hopes that it creates more opportunities for experiential learning.

“The volunteers are getting that experience of working with students prior to getting their jobs,” Vosburgh said. “During your college career, while you’re learning all of these things, you then have the option to put it into practice.”

spring of 2020, the GVSU discovered the main need for K-12 students was homework help.

Following this, K-12 Connect was created in the fall of 2020. The program is a gateway for the university to actively pursue and connect with students, faculty, and parents within K-12 schools through tutoring.

For the first running year of K-12 Connect, the only program available was free Homework Help tutoring run by volunteers from the university. This year, K-12 Connect is welcoming two additional new programs to offer more help for K-12 students and create quality jobs for GVSU students. The two new programs will include Homework Help Plus and Targeted Reading Tutoring. Both programs will be offered in K-12 schools by GVSU students.

K-12 Connect’s Lead Amirah Vosburgh presents the two new programs and the valuable aspects this expansion will bring to the program.

Vosburgh said Homework Help Plus adds additional factors to Homework Help tutoring by guaranteeing the school tutors for their students.

“It is K-12 homework help tutoring for anyone who needs it, but it’s contracting with schools to get tutors who will be designated to them,” Vosburgh said. “For example, tutors who will only work with the students in their school’s specific subjects or grade levels and at specific times.”

The second part of the expansion, Targeted

Erik Nordman, Associate Professor of Natural Resources Management and Adjunct Professor of Economics at Grand Valley State University, has recently written a book called “The Uncommon Knowledge of Elinor Ostrom: Essential Lessons for Collective Action.”

Published in 2021, Nordman’s book explores Ostrom’s investigation of small communities and their collaborative efforts to sustain their environmental resources. Elinor Ostrom’s efforts worked to expose the misconceptions surrounding government regulations and privatization of environmental resources in order to sustain them. She believed in the power of communities to maintain and sustain their own resources without government intervention or privatization.

One particular concept Ostrom worked to refute was the essay by Garrett Hardin called “The Tragedy of the Commons.” Nordman paraphrased this defense as a hypothetical con-

cept in which villagers are left to graze animals without legal limitations or government regulation. When the villagers are given this freedom, it encourages more more villagers to come to the common pasture and inevitably, overtime, overgrazing it. According to Hardin, this incentive traps us. If left to our own devices, people will overuse their own benefits. Hardin said that humans are doomed unless these “commons” are privatized or regulated by the state.

Nordman said that Ostrom’s research and investigation works to directly contradict this idea.

Nordman explores Ostrom’s research by traveling to the places Ostrom traveled and speaking with the communities Ostrom observed in her research. He tells the story of Ostrom’s life and ideas through the lens of the people in those resourceful communities, such as those working in Lobster fisheries in Maine and farmers in Valencia, Spain who demonstrated their use of their “tribunal de las Aguas” (water court), which has been used by the community for a thousand years.

Driving past Hancock in Eastown on any given day feels like you are missing out on the big annual family picnic.

Except, here, you likely will not run into extended relatives that you only see once a year and your aunt’s lukewarm

potato salad doesn’t stand a chance against Hancock’s Nashville hot chicken.

Hancock’s chicken is the best food I have ever had from a gas station.

Granted it hasn’t been a gas station in decades and has been refurbished into a wholesome family restaurant that sports an old-school cookout aesthetic. They offer indoor and outdoor dining, but if it’s nice out you will want to opt for the outdoor option at the various sized picnic tables, sheltered from the elements by big red umbrellas.

If you find yourself driving by Hancock in the fall and winter months, you might wonder what their secret is to keep the summer spirit contained within their white wooden fences. The answer: turf. This decorative element also provides an additional advantage to eating at Hancock rather than an actual park picnic. Fake grass means no dirt to kick up on your white sneakers or

mud for your heels to sink into. That is if heels happen to be your fried chicken dinner shoes of choice.

When I decided to go to Hancock in October, I anticipated the summer vibe to seem so last season. I was pleasantly surprised how the atmosphere was actually enhanced by the vibrant fall colors contrasting against the red decor and green turf.

If you are not in the mood for chicken then don’t waste your time here because that is kind of their thing. With the exception of a few vegetarian substitutes, your choices are fried chicken, chicken tenders or a chicken sandwich. It’s obvious that the simple menu was not a decision made out of laziness but in pride of their perfected fried chicken recipe.

Facebook and Twitch had a rough week

Twitch.tv and Facebook.com are two of the most popular websites on the internet. With billions of monthly visits and users trusting these websites to keep their sensitive data safe, one

might assume their security and upkeep measures would be impenetrable. So, how did Facebook and Twitch end up in headlines this week for a catastrophic outage and a massive security failure?

On Monday, Facebook was completely removed from the internet for six hours, taking down Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus’ services with it. The problem was apparently related to a server reconfiguration, but whatever was changed also affected the entire company’s internal communication channels. Facebook employees could not even communicate with their colleagues to try and figure out what was going on.

Twitch, on the other hand,

suffered one of the biggest data breaches ever seen for such a large platform. The Guardian reported that 125 gigabytes of data including the site’s source code, internal security tools, and several years’ worth of payout information for some of its largest streamers was leaked via 4chan on Wednesday. The data also included references to a virtual game marketplace codenamed “Vapor” which sounds like a direct competitor to the most popular PC game marketplace, Steam.

here is a menace gripping Grand Valley State University’s Allendale Campus. Pervading the lives of students, faculty and staff, indecently and insect-like, this threat risks the sanity and civility of every member of the GVSU community. This menace is known as Spider-Man. Or, Spider-Men, plural.

These menacing Spider-Men have been spotted walking through Kirkhof, on the Little Mac bridge and outside of the Lubbers Student Services Center.

Imagine, sitting in Kirkhof. Eating sushi, while a masked arachnid in tights strolls past you, holding doors open for students and stopping to take pictures with curious onlookers. This kind of unnerving, mind-boggling nightmare was sprung upon one of the Grand Valley Lanthorn’s confidential sources, and it could happen to you, too.

Spider-Men, actually. Spotted all over GVSU’s campus have been anonymous figures-- presumably students-- dressed like Spider-Man, wearing backpacks

and walking to classes.

Fringe theorists have postulated potential links between this phenomenon and New York Comic Con, which occurred over this past weekend, or the upcoming Spider-Man movie, which will release in December. However, no such connection has been made.

The true agenda of these web-spinning strangers is unknown, but one can only assume the worst about their mysterious intentions. Perhaps they wish to leave their webs all over the new windows at the Mary Idema Pew Library or perhaps they’re in cahoots with some unseen cephalopod-themed supervillain. Whatever their goal is revealed to be, it is undoubtedly nefarious.

These Spider-Men have reportedly been kind and genial, but it’s clear this is only a ruse meant to ensnare gullible students and faculty into their certainly unseemly-- and possibly megalomaniacal-- schemes.

Sustainability Month events encourage students to get involved

Campus Sustainability Month is an international movement that Grand Valley State University and many other schools are taking part in, hoping to create more agents for change for the health of the planet. GVSU is celebrating sustainability in the month of October through a series of events and activities held on and off-campus.

Throughout the month, the GVSU Office of Sustainability Practices, along with multiple student organizations, will be hosting and promoting opportunities for students to learn ecologically viable strategies. Office of Sustainability Practices Director, Yumiko Jakobcic, said GVSU uses sustainability month to highlight all of the eco-friendly work being done all across campus.

“There are so many people working on sustainability efforts; departments, student organizations, community partners,” Jakobic said. “This is a way for us to celebrate that work.”

As a whole campus community, GVSU strives to be as conscious as possible when it comes to sustainability and environmental

issues. Providing easily accessible recycling bins, working to convert to a cashless campus and using recycled materials frequently prove to students and the community that GVSU is serious about lasting solutions.

Jakobcic said there are many reasons why it is not only important to be sustainable, but beneficial, such as personal ethics, financial effectiveness and social motivations to describe the importance of being sustainable.

“For me personally, I want to do everything I can to leave a brighter future for younger generations,” Jakobcic said.

GVSU has its own list of events and opportunities for those who would like to get involved with sustainability on campus.

Lakers will find the chance to join clubs, volunteer and get free snacks and small prizes at Sustainability Month events.

Graduate Assistant in the Office of Sustainability Practices, Kathryn Carey, said there are many unique experiences that Lakers are bringing to Sustainability Month.

“A really fun way to celebrate is through volunteering at our farm, the Sustainable Agriculture Project (SAP),” Carey said.

“This is a great way to learn more about sustainability and get involved!” Carey says.

Volunteering for the Sustainable Ag-

riculture Project will take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Another event returning to GVSU Sustainability Month is the Repair Clinic, hosted by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. On Oct. 19, students can bring items like broken glasses or ripped clothes to get repaired instead of buying new things.

Besides attending Sustainability Month events, there are many ways that students and community members can practice renewability. Correctly sorting garbage, being aware of how resources are being used and paying attention to what sorts of foods you’re eating are all ways that anyone can practice sustainability. Michael Hinkle, Farm Manager and Educator in the Office of Sustainability Practices, said that making conscious and informed decisions day to day can lead to a longer-lasting Earth.

“Be conscious of where you’re putting your trash, where your food comes from, and whether you’re using your resources efficiently,” Hinkle said. “For food, (ask yourself): is what you’re consuming food, or a food-like product? Heavily processed foods have a negative impact on both the environment and your health. For using resources, it’s as easy as turning off the lights.”

For those in the community who are looking to get involved, Hinkle recommends the Student Environmental Coalition, Farm Club or SAP’s volunteer hours, where volunteers are sent home with fresh produce. For the downtown campus, New City Neighbors and Kids Food Basket are great resources.

“We hope to raise awareness about sustainability and inspire others to join our efforts,” Jakobcic said.

CSLC returns to in-person service for make a difference day

After converting Make a Difference Day to a month-long virtual service event last year due to COVID-19 safety measures, the Community Service Learning Center (CSLC) is bringing back in-person service projects for this year’s event. Make a Difference Day will be on Saturday, Oct. 16.

Student volunteers for Make a Difference Day, of which there are around 200, according to Graduate Assistant for Civic Engagement Giavonna Ward, will meet up in the Kirkhof Center on Saturday morning. There, they will

listen to a keynote speech by Grand Valley State University alum Jahaven Haye. After that, participants will be split up into groups and head off to 12 different service sites where they will complete roughly three and a half hours of service at each site.

“It’s a great way for friends and student organizations to go do service, but it creates a community within those groups as well,” Ward said. “With service through the CSLC, our goal at the end of the day is we really want to make students active citizens.”

The objective of Make a Difference Day has always been to get students, especially those who live on the Allendale campus, out to see

the community in the greater Grand Rapids area. Service projects are also great team-building activities for all involved, especially clubs and other groups who sign up together.

“We have students participate in things where they’re doing service but we’re also teaching them about the community, about the people who live here, about the history of it and why it’s important to give back to their community,” Ward said.

Service sites this year are mostly located in the Grand Rapids area, but there are a few on or near GVSU’s Allendale campus. Some of the service sites participating in Make a Difference Day include: the Blandford Nature Center, Habitat for Humanity, GVSU Sustainable Agriculture Project, The YMCA, The YWCA and Kids Food Basket “There’s a lot of different options and different kinds of service projects that are going to be done at those various locations,” Ward said. “It should be a really good mix for students to see the different types of volunteer opportunities here in the Grand Rapids area.”

Haye’s keynote speech is going to be another way for the CSLC to get student volunteers excited about service. Haye, who currently works as Youth Development Specialist for the Urban League of West Michigan, experienced several forms of student

collaboration during his time at GVSU. “While he was here at Grand Valley, he was super involved in community service, was in a fraternity here and he’s a super great guy and has continued to do a lot of that volunteering and community engagement work since he’s left GVSU,” Ward said. “We think he’s going to be a really great example for our students to show them what their options are and how they can get involved post-graduation.”

For CSLC employees and student volunteers alike, the most exciting part of this year’s Make a Difference Day is the return to in-person service after months of virtual workarounds.

While Ward said that Make a Difference Month was successful last year, there is really no replacing the comradery and team-building that comes with in-person service projects.

“We did a really good job of bringing service projects to students with things like dropin service, but you can’t replicate going out into the community and seeing, on the ground, what that community partner is doing,” Ward said. “Getting students back out into the community is going to really get people excited about service work again.”

GV observes Indigenous Peoples’ Day with educational event

As Grand Valley State University is celebrating its 7th annual Indigenous Peoples Day, many members of the community are using this time to heal, rather than celebrate.

In the last year, media coverage brought to light the abuse suffered by Native American children in boarding schools across the US. In response to this, GVSU’s Office of Multicultural Affairs is hosting a presentation on the US Indian Boarding School Policy. On Monday, Oct. 11, Suzanne Cross, Associate Professor Emeritus of Michigan State University’s School of Social Work, will review the U.S. Indian Boarding School Policy from 1870 to the 1980s and its impacts. As a member of the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe, Cross will discuss historical and intergenerational trauma and the value of healing for the indigenous communities during these darker days.

As a whole, Indian country has chosen to take this time to create spaces of healing in response to the impending reports ordered by the United States Department of Interior on the U.S. Indian Boarding Schools. These principles have deeply guided this year’s observance of Indigenous Peoples Day at GVSU. Dr. Cross’s presentation is set to be a reflection of

these guiding principles. For those interested in attending, the Office of Multicultural Affairs requests that they fill out the RSVP form on their website.

Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations are relatively new to GVSU’s campus. As the Student Senate only voted to recognize Indigenous People’s Day at GVSU in 2017, the principles of the holiday are still unknown to many. While the first Monday in October is known in many places as Indigenous People’s Day, Columbus Day is still an official holiday celebrated throughout the U.S. on the same day.

“Columbus Day is taught in a way that creates this romanticized version of the discovery of America when in actuality, it was the beginning of a long era of very oppressive law for ingenious people,” said Belinda Bardwell, OMA event coordinator. “Ingenious Peoples Day for (GVSU) is a way to redirect attention and focuses on the true origins of America in a way that celebrates indigenous communities.”

This holiday comes with many emotions for the native community, as the mistreatment of their ancestors is the topic of discussion. With that being acknowledged, GVSU has worked to create their observances of Indigenous Peoples Day to be spaces of healing for the native community, while raising awareness of the injustices committed against Native Americans.

Alan Compo from the Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians grew up wishing there was more imagery from the Anishinaabe culture portrayed in local art. Now that he is a full-time artist, he uses the stories that he heard growing up to create vibrant pieces of artwork.

Oct. 11 is Indigenous Peoples’ Day which is a holiday that celebrates Native American culture and traditions. Compo has multiple pieces in the Grand Rapids area that commemorates the history of his tribe.

“Now that I’m able to do a lot of outside art and murals, I’d like to think that there’s some little Anishinaabe kid walking by and sees it and they’ll know that it came from another Anishinaabe,” Compo said.

Sharing Anishinaabe stories to the public is one of Compo’s main motivations for his art.

He said he was lucky to grow up with grandparents who still shared stories and relates them to everyday happenings. There are some young Anishinaabek who have not been as lucky to have heard these stories.

“It’s cool to be able to take those stories and to be able to create them in my way or how I took them growing up and how I think of them now,” Compo said.

Compo has always gravitated toward art as he was surrounded by working art such as basket making his whole life. He was also exposed to painters and other native artists throughout the Michigan community that have inspired his work throughout his career.

However, the older generations are not the only ones who inspire Compo “There are so many younger artists coming up and I’m inspired by them and what they’re doing. Especially how they are taking new media and doing new things with it,” Compo said.

While he portrays traditional stories and themes, Compo refers to most of his work as

contemporary. His work typically involves vibrant colors and imagery that draws the viewer in closer.

“A lot of the time I really like the bright colors because I feel like we are all bright people,” Compo said.

One of Compo’s most recent projects is his collaboration with Graffiti Wall GR and other Anishinaabek artists. This wall in the Creston Heights Neighborhood is a legal graffiti wall that allows the community to freely express themselves.

The wall was painted all orange to honor and remember the survivors and children who lost their lives in residential and boarding schools across Turtle Island. Compo led a group of collaborators who each contributed to the piece by bringing their own experiences and forms of expression. The orange wall is an example of a piece of community art, but Compo said he sees almost all of his murals as community pieces.

Compo considers his 2018 ArtPrize entry “Anishinaabek” his pride and joy. This mural, located on Pearl St. downtown Grand Rapids, is intentionally placed in a tunnel along the Grand River. This specific area was chosen because it is where the sacred plum orchards used to be.

The plum orchard was known as a women’s area as well as a place where ceremonies were held. This land was taken away from them when settlers came and burnt down the orchard, leaving them without a place for ceremonies and gathering.

Compo’s piece retells the history behind the plum orchards and the Anishinaabek women.

“To work with the city to help bring that idea back and that story back that a lot of people don’t even realize,” Compo said.

Compo’s mission is to spread the stories of his people throughout the community. His brightly colored murals and artwork can be found throughout the Grand Rapids area.

New club hosts career development events on campus

Grand Valley State University hosts many career events throughout the fall semester.

From the Career and Internship Fair to the Healthcare Experience Panel, there are many opportunities for students of all majors to meet with and learn more about potential employers. However, it’s not unusual for students to feel nervous or overwhelmed to attend a job fair or panel.

Women In Business (WIB), a new student organization, is holding a career event titled Career 102: How To Stand Out From A Crowd. The goal of the event is to help students feel confident with their career search through listening and networking with successful professionals.

The upcoming event will have a panel of six successful women business professionals.

The panel members are each from a variety of well-known companies, such as Amway, JPMorgan Chase and Plante Moran. The panel will share their career experience and job searching advice with the audience.

The in-person event will provide opportunities to interact with the panel, as well as a second segment where students can sit down and network with the professionals, faculty advisor Thuy Simpson said.

reer 101: The Job of Getting A Job, went very well. The event had around 40 attendees. The organization expects a larger attendance in the future because they are partnering with the GVSU Career Center.

The Career Center will help WIB reach out to students who are interested in the

event. Despite the organization’s name, the upcoming event is open to all GVSU students regardless of their gender identity.

“Our goal is to have professional development events that are open to everyone, all students,” Simpson said. “Whether you are male or female or business students or non-business students, to get a job you need to set yourself apart.”

The club hopes the event will help all students well-position themselves for meaningful and well-compensated internships and jobs.

GVSU students, like Junior Lilie Diotte, said they are excited about this opportunity.

“Even though I’m not a business major, I think this event would help me become more confident in my career search. I want to be successful but I’m afraid to put myself out there,” Diotte said. “This event seems a lot less intimidating than other career events.”

For their Fall 2021 Career series, WIB plans to host more career-related, stress management, fundraising and community outreach events. In November, the club is hoping to have a therapy dog event.

GV students are given a voice at annual Teach-In

Grand Valley State University has opened applications for the annual Teach-In that will take place from Nov. 10 and 11. The Teach-In gives students and faculty the opportunity to collaborate with one another to present a variety of topics that center around the ideas of “Power, Privilege, and Difficult Dialogues.”

This marks the ninth year of the Teach-In where students and faculty are able to address topics related to inequality and social justice issues. This program originated from movements to promote equity across the GVSU campus and was encouraged by the University Academic Senate and Student Senate, who have promoted the event since its start.

“The Teach-In focuses on social issues in our society every year highlighted in the student presentations. These projects are meant to make those attending think deeper into both their education at GVSU and society,” said Karen Gipson faculty lead for the 2021 Teach-In. “The topics and studies to demonstrate these problems can span a variety of disciplines, majors, and interests, faculty lead for the 2021 Teach-In.” Gipson said that all sessions include students as co-creators with faculty or staff, en-

gaging on a variety of topics related to power and privilege, with an emphasis on the difficult dialogues necessary for social change on issues such as racism, sexism, classism, ableism, heteronormative practices, xenophobia and the like.

To partake in this event, students must fill out a project proposal form that states what the student’s project will address, the chosen format and the faculty member with whom the student will be working.

“My advice would be to think outside of the box and reach out to any on-campus department that you can think of,” said Student Senate Vice President of Diversity Affairs, Kyle Gineman. “No matter what department you reach out to, there will usually be someone who is willing to help you or point you in the direction of someone who is willing to help.”

When creating a project proposal, Gineman said that students should delve into issues they are passionate about or experiences they have faced. Through these proposals, students are able to better connect with themselves and the community.

In previous years, the presentations have surrounded the same topics but have taken many different forms; such as a classroom format where students learn about particular issues from the presenter, roundtables discussions and workshops.

“(The discussion format) is super interesting and engaging because you are able to hear perspectives from so many different people with different backgrounds,” Gineman said.

Gineman also said that students should aim to engage with their audience beyond the Teach-In presentation. Students can do this by preparing ways that individuals can better address the issues that they have addressed in their presentation to their own communities and what they can do to create a more inclusive world.

The Teach-In provides a valuable environment for multiple diverse backgrounds to come

together and engage in thoughtful conversations. These messages tie into GVSU’s Divisions of Inclusion and Equity, Enrollment Development, Student Affairs, and the Provost’s Office that actively work towards reaching a more inclusive campus.

“The way to fight against injustice and oppression is to first learn about these issues and then figure out what actions you can take to enact change,” Gineman said. “It doesn’t matter if you don’t hold a position within the university, every student can foster change and create a more inclusive environment within and outside of Grand Valley.”

There will be a speaker coming to campus, Dr. Suzanne Cross Associate Professor Emeritus Michigan State University. Cross will be speaking about generational trauma from the U.S. child welfare policy. This presentation will be reviewing the U.S. Indian Boarding School policy and its impact on the American Indian population.

Tuesday Oct. 12 from noon to 8 p.m. This event will be in partnership with ChemoCare, an on campus organization, and MOD Pizza. MOD Pizza is located at 3300 Alpine Ave. They will be donating 20% of all proceeds from takeout and delivery sales to ChemoCare. MOD Pizza needs at least 20 people to RSVP to the event in order to approve it, even if students aren’t sure they’ll be ordering they should still RSVP. Phi Beta Sigma fraternity is holding a mobile food drive to help local food pantries and homeless shelters. From 10 a.m. to noon they will be holding the drive at Traditional Style Living, which is Robinson, Kistler and Copeland.

They will be accepting donations of non-perishable items and clothing. All donations will be given to Beverly Reformed Church and then distributed to local food pantries and homeless shelters. This will be the first drive in a series, the next will be on Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to noon and they will be accepting the same donations in the same location.

BUY STICKERS FOR A GOOD CAUSE

Sigma Lambda Gamma sorority will be holding a sticker sale on Oct. 14 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Kirkhof lobby. The sorority is holding multiple events for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

All stickers will be $1 and can be used on water bottles or laptops for example. All proceeds will be donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation.

BOTTLE HONEY WITH THE BEEKEEPERS Grand Valley’s on-campus Beekeepers club is holding another honey bottling event on Friday Oct. 15. Students will be gathering to bottle the honey the beekeepers have recently extracted. The event will take place from noon to 2 p.m. Niemeyer Multipurpose room. They will be pouring the honey into individual bottles and raffle off free chapstick to thank those who attend. No previous knowledge on beekeeping is needed to attend this event. as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the school of public health. He often teaches about immigration and policing, viewing how that impacts people of color.

He wrote his first book last year, “Separated: Family and Community in the Aftermath of an Immigration Raid,” his presentation reflected back on his book and the people he interviewed in order to write it. The book features the stories of families impacted by the loss of their husbands and fathers, men who were taken away from their families by ICE. He interviewed those who were left behind after a raid in Ann Arbor in 2013.

Lopez reflected on his family, bringing up that he was the son of an immigrant parent and that his grandfather who worked in a tire plant lost his arm. As a child, he thought that was normal.

“I just thought that was kind of my grandfather,” Lopez said. “It wasn’t until later that I started to understand folks who do certain types of work are more likely to get hurt in certain ways. Folks who do agricultural work are more likely to die due to heatstroke are more likely to have back problems and muscle problems than those who don’t do this type of work.”

He realized that his grandfather not having his arm was a story about immigration and who does what type of work in the United States.

“Often we are legacies of advocacy and organizing from our parents and communities that we didn’t even know about because we

don’t see them represented in institutions of higher education,” Lopez said.

He focused his talk on deportation and what it looks like in America. Highlighting that deportation peaked under the Obama administration with 400,000 removals. Lopez said this is how immigration is represented, by counting deportations.

“There’s a lot that’s missing,” Lopez said.

“A lot more shapes our families and our lives than finally getting put on that plane. If you only look at people who are deported you fail to look at people of other immigration statuses who aren’t removed.”

Lopez said that every single person deported is connected to a larger community.

Their families that they have here and those in their lives. He did mention that he didn’t know how to have open conversations about deportation besides just looking at graphs when he started his work.

“Most of the deportations that happened were men,” Lopez said. “So when I focused on telling the story of deportation I was telling a gendered story about what it was like to be a man that was arrested and removed.”

When he interviewed families, wives and sisters of men who were deported, Lopez said it made his “head spin.” He saw that the majority of the pain families feel happens after deportation.

Every other Friday at noon, Grand Valley State University’s Economics Club invites a speaker to give an hour-long talk for their virtual Lunch and Learn series. Open to all and intended to foster learning and interaction between students, faculty and community, these presentations explore open-ended topics relevant (but not limited) to the fields of economics and business. For the Lunch and Learn meeting for Oct. 8, GVSU alumni Erin O’Neil gave a webinar on how failure— when approached honestly— can spark growth.

“Why don’t we hear more often motivational speakers talking about their missteps or failures?” O’Neil asked. “It’s much more often that you hear them talk about positive characteristics, or that ‘if

you work hard enough, you’ll get there.’

How can we talk more realistically about what success actually is, and what failure actually is? Failing forward should be normalized— it should be celebrated, because otherwise it’s going to create a toxic culture where failure is perceived as not allowed.”

O’Neil graduated from GVSU in 2016 with a Bachelor in Business Administration in Economics. Since then, she’s had three different jobs, currently working at Amway as a Forecast Analyst.

“For the longest time for me in school, fear and anxiety paralyzed me from realizing my actual potential,” O’Neil said. “It wasn’t until a few years ago that I realized constantly focusing on what other people think of me wasn’t helping me at all.

I have ADHD, and I was not diagnosed until after college.

Grandin was featured in Downtown Grand Rapids Inc.’s 2019 Rad Women public art project, where 27 local female-identifying artists were commissioned to paint portraits of influential women on electrical boxes throughout the downtown area.

She is vocal about the humane treatment of livestock as well as an author of more than 60 scientific papers on animal behavior.

GRAND RAPIDS ART MUSEUM PREPARES TO HOST HALLOWEEN TOUR The Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM) will be hosting an evening tour of the museum’s eeriest artworks for Halloween.

On Oct. 28 from 6:30-7:30 p.m., the “Superstitions in Art” tour will feature tales and superstitions from the histories of various cultures, and detail how they were expressed through artwork.

Visitors will be taken on a journey through the galleries to hear haunted legends and folklore told by the GRAM staff.

Guests will receive a special souvenir and a coupon for a later visit.

GV MUSIC, THEATRE, DANCE DEPARTMENT HOSTS OBOE MASTER CLASSES Grand Valley State University’s Music, Theatre and Dance Department is bringing in three performers from the Grand Rapids Symphony for Oboe Master Classes throughout the 2021-2022 school year.

On Oct. 11 from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Nov. 1, and March 28, Kathleen Gomez will be at the Sherman van Solkema Recital Hall in the Haas Center for Performing Arts to teach a class.

Gomez plays the oboe and English horn, and has been a member of the Grand Rapids Symphony since 1981.

She received a Bachelor of Science in music education from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Master of Music in woodwind instruments from the University of Michigan.

Gomez has performed with the Chicago Civic Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony.

She also teaches private lessons at Grand Rapids Community College and Calvin University.

GV highlights Donna Ferrato’s activism photography

The second event of Grand Valley State University’s “On The Wall Artist Talk Series” featured award-winning photojournalist and activist, Donna Ferrato.

On Oct. 5 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. Ferrato spoke with students via Zoom about her creative process, how her work is influenced, and her anti-violence advocacy efforts.

This specific talk was supported in part by the Center for Women and Gender Equity at GVSU as one of many events being held during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

For more than 30 years, Ferrato has documented domestic violence and its impact through photography. Her work has been featured in numerous publications including Time Magazine, Life Magazine, People Magazine, and The New York Times.

In 1991, Ferrato published a book of her work entitled “Living With the Enemy” that sparked a national conversation about women’s rights and sexual violence.

Ferrato said that her start in the world of photography was gradual.

“When I began working, I was a legal secretary, married, and supporting my husband through law school,” Ferrato said. “After he graduated, I realized I didn’t want to be a lawyer’s wife, didn’t care about the security of marriage, and took a long hike to Europe and back

with my camera, living by my wits. When I came back to New York City in 1978, I knew I was a photographer. There was no going back.”

When it comes to the inspiration behind her photography, Ferrato credits her love and respect for people, their rights and feeling the need to document what she sees as unfair or immoral.

She said her favorite photograph she ever documented is of a boy, Diamond, shouting at his father for hitting his mother after he called 911 to help her.

“It speaks to the emotional trauma kids experience when they see their mothers being abused,” Ferrato said. “I hope it makes people more aware of children’s feelings.”

Ferrato first got into photographing domestic violence when she witnessed a man hitting a woman.

While Malloy’s passion for film and video is blazing now, it took some time for it to develop.

Growing up Malloy said she loved watching movies and being a part of the arts, especially in the form of music. She participated in choir, learned how to play the guitar, and took part in theatre productions.

During her senior year of high school, she realized that life in front of the camera or on the stage wasn’t for her. However, she still wanted to be a part of the process.

Malloy began her freshman year as a film major at GVSU and hasn’t looked back since.

“I got lucky when I came to Grand Valley and started in the film major because I just enjoyed it so much,” Malloy said. “It was an action-packed three to four years for me when I was in college because I learned everything.”

Malloy said during her freshman year she learned much of the basics of film production.

As she progressed through the major her sophomore and junior year, she said she started taking theory classes and making films and it taught her who she was as an artist.

She said GVSU’s film program has a unique way of combining all parts of the film-making

process into the required criteria for the major.

“A lot of schools don’t do what Grand Valley does with film programs,” Malloy said. “A lot of them are more theory-based or more production-based programs. Grand Valley has a good structure of both, and so for me, the theory was just as important as the hands-on experience because you learn who you want to be as an artist and what you want to make and it informs your actual on-site experiences.”

Through the discovery of her own artistic preferences, Malloy realized she wanted to focus on representing gender studies and people of color accurately through her films.

“It’s not enough to just have representation, you need to want to do it properly, not just because we need it,” Malloy said.

“You need to want to do it properly, and do it well, and that’s something I really push every director I work with to do.”

QUICK HITS MATT MITCHELL BECOMES SECOND GV FOOTBALL COACH TO REACH 100TH WIN This past weekend, Grand Valley State University football coach Matt Mitchell, was honored for his 100th win at GVSU (5-0), taking the victory from Northwood University (1-4) 70-9. Mitchell has been the head coach of the football program for 12 years, starting off as the assistant coach for six years prior following Chuck Martin and GVSU’s first head coach to hit 100 wins, Brian Kelly.

The overall record he holds is now 10028 with an impressive five NCAA DII playoff appearances and two semifinal appearances. During his time at GVSU, Mitchell coached two NCAA DII Championship games and has successfully led this year’s team to an undefeated record overall and in the GLIAC. After a full season of COVID-19 hiatus, Mitchell has managed to bring a team out of quarantine and into the spotlight as the No. 7 ranked team in the NCAA DII.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY TAKES FIRST PLACE AT LEWIS CROSSOVER The Grand Valley State University women’s cross country team stole the show, ending the meet with their best team score this season (36). Sophomore Klaudia O’Malley took first place among 24 other schools with a time of 21.54.1. With three other runners in the top ten finishers, the GVSU women’s cross country team beat the runner-up, Lewis University, by a margin of 70 points.

Sophomore Kayce Rympa placed in fourth with a time of 22.16.3, freshman Sarah May came in eighth at 22.25.0 and sophomore Natalie Graber just making tenth at 22.28.6. The other Lakers that competed in the race were Lucy Karpukhno, Maria Mitchell and Emma Everhart-Deckard, all securing places slightly behind their teammates.

The No. 1 ranked Lakers are tailed by Southwest Baptist and Southern Indiana and remain at the top of the conference with two more meets to go before the NCAA DII Midwest Regional Championships and the National Championships in November.

FIVE LAKERS MAKE GLIAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK Last week, two Grand Valley State University football players, two cross country runners and one golfer took the GLIAC Player of the Week honors. On the football team, sophomore linebacker, Abe Swanson took defensive player of the week and senior cornerback, Allante Leapheart took special teams player of the week after the Battle of the Valleys. Swanson leads the team this season in tackles with 34 and Leapheart leads the GLIAC with seven pass breakups.

Senior runner Issac Harding and junior Hannah Becker were both awarded the same honors after some successful races so far this season, after Harding taking first place at the Live in Lou XC Classic and Becker taking sixth in the Spartan Invitational and the Live in Lou XC Classic.

GVSU women’s golf’s freshman recruit, Megan Miron, has done exceptionally well this season, already having won first team All-American honors, WGCA All-East Regional team, and GLIAC Freshman of the Year.

GV Football’s Peterson brothers: from the backyard to the big field

This football season during the second game against Wisconsin-La Crosse, sophomore quarterback, Cade Peterson, threw a pass that would be caught by redshirt freshman tight end, Drew Peterson, making it Drew’s first college catch, but probably his thousandth from Cade.

Back when Cade and Drew were young enough to play catch, they started their football careers in the backyard, coached by their dad until they were old enough to join a team.

The pair have kept by each other’s sides along with their younger brother, Bret, through years of football, basketball, and baseball.

Now, their names are being broadcasted on the big screen at Lubbers Stadium together.

Growing up in Lake City, MI until Cade was a junior in high school and Drew a sophomore, the Peterson family moved to Glen Lake, MI to finish out their high school careers after being coached by their dad all the way through. After 30 years of coaching, Bret’s last year in high school will most likely end their dad’s coaching career as he watches all three of his sons take their next steps forward.

ing for him,” Drew said. “So that’s how we grew up and that’s how it’s taken us to the stage.”

Drew is currently a junior credit-wise, double majoring in sports management and exercise science, but his position at the tight end on the football field is what he really wants to focus on this year.

“I can only be an athlete for so long, and the memories that I’ll make in this locker room and with my brother on the field; I don’t really want to look past that,” Drew said.

While Cade has seen his share of playing time and game-day experiences, Drew has

stepped up the plate this season and taken over for some of his tight-end teammates. Senior, Grant Depmster, was out for the first three games of the season with an injury, and junior, Jayk Slager, and redshirt freshman, Gavin Cossou, were both out in the Oct. 2 game against Saginaw Valley State University, leaving Drew an opportunity to play some football. After his own shoulder surgery last year, he’s shown that he’s ready to come out and play with his brother.

Men’s Club Hockey opens conference play with a big win over Eastern Michigan University

After a slow start to the 2021-22 season that was largely due to a tough schedule and an inexperienced roster, the Grand Valley State University Men’s DI Club Hockey team earned a dominant win against Eastern Michigan University in their first conference game on Friday, Oct. 8 that ended in a final

score 9-1 in favor of the Lakers.

The Lakers saw a productive day on the offensive side of the ice as they were able to put up three goals in each period. In the first period, freshman wing, Owen Petersmark, scored the first goal of the night followed by goals from sophomore wing, Sam Lechel, and junior wing, Zach Borchardt. EMU also scored their only goal in the first period.

In the second period, junior center, Evan Chomchai, found the back of the net to extend the Lakers lead to 4-1. GVSU ended the second period up 6-1 after Petersmark scored his second goal of the night and sophomore center, Dallas Hood, added a goal of his own.

After the intermission, junior wing, Shane Haggary, put the puck in the back of the net to move the score to 7-1. The final two goals came when Lechel and Chomchai each scored their second goal of the night, pushing the final score to 9-1.

As their second win of the season so far, this impressive performance helped the Lak-

ers get back on track and gain some confidence.

“After the start, the ranked teams we had right out of the gate, the five teams we played, we needed a game like that just to get the boys back on track; just to get the confidence back up,” said coach Carl Trosien. “That’s our first conference game of the year, so it is a big conference win to get things heading in the right direction.”

Since half of the team is made up of freshmen this season, the win was a huge boost for the team’s chemistry on the ice.

“For the younger kids it’s their first big win,” Chomchai said. “It is their second win of the season so they are getting used to it. I know they are having fun with it and they are going to want to keep winning throughout the rest of the year.”

Abby Graham leads GV volleyball team in her final season

On the Grand Valley State University women’s volleyball team, junior outside hitter Abby Graham is one of the team’s leaders this season, placing a big emphasis on the value of a healthy team comradely and a winning culture. Graham is in the midst of her fourth and final season with the volleyball team, looking to lead the Lakers to their second consecutive first-place finish in the GLIAC South.

“My class was pretty big and the class under us was pretty big,” Graham said. “We took them under our wing and we are all super close. I really think that we have made a culture that is fun to be a part of and we all just love each other and have so much fun together.”

Coach Jason Johnson, who took the program over this season after being an assistant coach on the team for 21 years prior, said that Graham’s most impressive trait is her “compassion for people.”

Compassion is something that Graham has felt inspired to obtain from both of her parents and in particular, her mother, Donna Graham.

“I’m very close with my mom and she just inspires me to be my best and be compassionate and empathetic towards others all the time,” Graham said.

That compassion has helped Graham be successful in her role as a leader, a role she has grown into over the past four years. Graham said making sure the underclassmen on the team feel at home, settled in, and included, are all major priorities in maintaining the winning culture.

something she wanted early on,” Johnson said.

“She did not like being in a leadership role, she didn’t want to be looked at in those regards. But she has embraced it heavily this year. I think a part of that is senior maturity.”

Adding to the characteristics Graham brings to the team as a leader, she also has produced on the court over the past three seasons with the Lakers. In the condensed 2020 season, Graham was an All-GLIAC Second Team selection and helped lead the Lakers to a 12-4 record, finishing the 16-game campaign with a total of 239 digs, 94 kills, 23 assists and 15 blocks.

Now, in the 2021 season, Graham was named GLIAC South player of the week after

her performances to help the Lakers defeat Michigan Tech University and Northern Michigan University earlier this season.

In the early stages of her career at GVSU, Graham didn’t have the easiest time adjusting to college, both in the classroom and on the volleyball court. She also endured an ankle injury following her freshman year, which put her in a walking boot the entire summer.

“Things were not going perfect, but I think that was necessary to happen for me to be where I am today,” Graham said.

Moving away from her family, who reside in her hometown of St. Charles, Illinois, where Graham first began playing vol-

leyball, was another factor in her struggle in adjusting to college.

The Illinois native had a bit of a late start to her volleyball career, first playing the sport competitively in seventh grade for her school team. Up until that point, basketball was the sport she was focused on. However, heading into high school, she stopped playing basketball to focus solely on volleyball.

It was a decision that paid dividends for the former basketball player, as she was a two-time All-State honorable mention and led her team to a regional championship in her senior season.

Playing at the next level was something Graham always knew was a possibility, but was also content with not playing following high school.

“I wanted to play in college, but I knew if I didn’t find the perfect place then maybe I wouldn’t,” Graham said. “Once I found GV, it’s where I felt like I belonged.”

Although Graham is currently a junior due to the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA because of COVID-19, she is electing to not take her extra year and call it quits after the 2021 season concludes.

“I’m feeling old,” Graham said. “I don’t know if my body will hold up. I just kinda feel like I love volleyball, but I know there is a lot more in store for me so I kind of just want to focus on my future as a speech pathologist.”

Graham said she has been applying to graduate schools in Michigan, as well as in other states. GVSU is on her list of potential schools to complete her master’s degree in speech pathology. However, even if she does return to school as a Laker next fall, she still does not plan on playing one last year of volleyball.

GV Football puts on a show for Family Day, continues undefeated run

The No. 6 ranked Grand Valley State University football team obliterated Northwood University football, 70-9, this past Saturday, Oct. 9 at Lubbers Stadium for the annual Family Day Game here at GVSU, as many friends, families and students filled the stands.

GVSU started on defense while Northwood opened the game with an attacking mindset as quarterback Ty Cox threw a 24-yard pass to receiver Noah Koenigsknecht for the first touchdown of the game; a 6-play, 86-yard drive gave the Timberwolves a 6-0 lead after a missed extra point attempt.

GVSU then came out for their first offensive drive of the game. Sophomore quarterback, Cade Peterson, threw a 34yard pass to freshman receiver, Darrell Johnson, to set the Lakers in enemy territory. Another great pass from Peterson to

junior receiver, Hunter Rison, for 18-yards put the Lakers inside the red zone for the first time in the game. The trip would then result in a 9-yard pass from Peterson to redshirt freshman, Jaylon Williams, for his first Laker touchdown reception that would give them a 7-6 lead.

After a forced fumble by senior defensive cornerback, Tory Lewis, junior Damon Wesley was able to recover at the GVSU 48yard line. The offense came out looking to extend their advantage and score after the forced turnover. Peterson found Rison for a 17-yard pass that put the Lakers on the Northwood 16-yard line. Two plays later, junior running back, Aryuan Cain-Veasey, ran in for 6-yards for another GVSU touchdown, extending their lead, 14-6.

To start the second quarter, GVSU had control of the ball and looked to score to control the game. An 11-play, 91-yard-long drive concluded in a Lakers’ touchdown after Peterson completed a 29-yard pass to Rison, growing their lead, 21-6.

Northwood would come out on offense to try to cut into the GVSU lead but were forced to yet another 3-and-out. The hot Laker offense came back onto the field for a 5-play, 51-yard drive after a Cain-Veasey 24-yard touchdown run, his second of the game, making the lead 28-6 with just under 10 minutes left in the first half.

Another 3-and-out would force Northwood to punt the ball. The GVSU special teams would rush the punter as junior linebacker, Denzel Williams, blocked the punt, which was then scooped up by redshirt freshman defensive back, Grant Hart, to score a 19-yard punt-return touchdown, extending the Laker even further, 35-6.

On the next GVSU offensive drive, they continued to keep their foot on the gas pedal as senior running back, Bryce Young-Walls, ran for a 24-yard gain to put the Lakers fairly close to enemy territory.
