Gov. Rick Snyder’s budget proposal for 2013 fiscal year could increase GV’s state appropriations by 7.6%

Gov. Rick Snyder announced the budget proposal for Michigan’s 2013 fiscal year today in Lansing, proposing a three percent, or $36.2 million, increase in state allocation to public universities. For Grand Valley State University, that means a 7.6 percent increase, translating to an additional $3.9 million in funding from the state.

“It’s the first time in 12 years that that state governor is not talking about how much to cut higher education but how much to add,” said Matt McLogan, vice president for university relations at GVSU. “Any dollar that we receive from the state we do not have to ask our students to pay in the form of tuition. Any new dollars, any additional dollars that we get from the state, means a dollar we don’t have to ask the students to pay.”

In addition to the increase, Snyder suggested a new funding model for state that would be based more on performance criteria rather than the per-pupil system currently in place.

Under Snyder’s suggested model, funding for universities would be determined by performance measures like graduation rates, merit and a high turnout of students with degrees in high-demand fields like science, technology, engineering, math and health professions.

In addition, the governor said universities operating efficiencies should also be taken into consideration with deciding on funding.

Which, McLogan said, is all good news for GVSU, who have doubled the number of degrees awarded in the last 10 years, and have a high pass rate for both it’s nursing program (100 percent of graduate students and 93 percent of undergraduates) and engineering program (89 percent).

According to President Thomas J. Haas’ most recent Accountability Report, the university experienced the highest increase in enrollment

and granted degrees from 2001 to 2010 over all other state institutions. The report also cited that 88 percent of the 2010 graduating class are employed, in graduate school or both, and 84 percent of those students are working in Michigan.

“So, the governor has said all along that results for money really matter for him as a part of public policy,” McLogan said. “So Grand Valley, which is one of the states best performers because our students are so good, means we’ve done well.”

Among other good news on the horizon for GVSU is Snyder’s mention of the December, 2010 proposal authorizing a science and laboratory classroom building for the Allendale Campus. McLogan said the proposal has been in limbo for about a year while the administration was making judgments about what projects it wishes to support.

However, the governor indicated in his budget message today that the science and laboratory building facility is something the state will support in the coming years, and noted that he would recommend it for funding to the legislature.

“We need additional capacity in our science classrooms and laboratories for the large number of students at Grand Valley who are in those stem and health programs,” McLogan said.

Money matters aside, McLogan said the most important part of the governor’s message today was the hope of a new policy direction – a shift away from the disinvestment of higher education and one toward accessibility, affordability and growth.

“For a decade, it has been the policy of state governor to disinvest the public universities to shift the burden away from tax-payers and on to students and this year the governor has proposed a shift,” McLogan said. “A reversal of that policy, with renewed investment in the states public universities. Don’t be afraid to tell GV officials urge student body not to let false allegations deter future victims from reporting

hile students at Grand Valley State University are still trying to make sense of the two recanted allegations of an attempted assault and attempted sexual assault on the Allendale Campus’ Little Mac Bridge last month, university officials are urging the rest of the student body not to let those incidents deter victims of a sexual assault or attempted sexual assault from reporting in the future.

“We want to definitely get out the message that this should not deter students from coming forward,” said Marlene Kowalski Braun, director of the Women’s Center at GVSU. “… The Women’s Center has seen an increase in discussion, dialogue, concern that you have, and what that says is that this issue is a very relevant issue on college campuses, and because we know so many people are suffering, we hope that these stories will actually just heighten awareness — that there are places for people to go.”

According to a report by the U.S. Department of Justice’s National Institute of Justice, 35 of every 1,000 women on a college campus are victims of sexual assault or rape in a given nine-month academic year.

Kowalski Braun said that in an earlier 2006 survey, reported numbers showed GVSU was in line with national statistics, with about one in five to one in six students reporting a sexual assault on campus.

In the recent myGVSU campus climate survey, 120 to 122 students reported they had been sexually assaulted while at GVSU. Most of the reported victims were undergraduate women who said the assault took place during the first six weeks of their first semester. Rather than report the assault to police, most respondents indicated that they told a friend and felt embarrassed or responsible.

“The overwhelming vast majority of criminal sexual misconduct cases occur between individuals who know each other,” said Capt. Brandon DeHaan, assistant director of the Grand Valley Police Department. “… We know these cases are underreported.

These instances that occurred in November should not deter people from reporting these cases. By and far, alcohol or drugs are used as a tool — dare I say a weapon — in committing these crimes. We encourage individuals that have been sexually assaulted to report to police so we can investigate and assist them to become survivors, not just victims.”

Kowalski Braun said the university is battling with a “societal norming” around who is to blame for sexual assault, something that undercuts the amount of reported incidents not only on campus, but in general.

“So, what we want people to know,

is that because you were drinking, because you feel like you shouldn’t have gotten yourself in this situation — there are no excuses for violating someone,” she said. “We may talk about people making different choices — so like, in hindsight, maybe I wish I hadn’t drank so much — but that is not a reason for victimization.”

The best determiner for those questioning whether they should report an incident? Kowalski Braun said it is as simple as following your gut, an action underrated by society’s shortfalls in defining what sexual assault is.

“Most students cannot talk about what consent is and is not, so if we’re waiting for people to sort of have this definition, then we’re really having an uphill battle,” she said. “If you feel like something happened that didn’t feel right, we welcome you to come in and talk about it.”

“The goal is to not let anything fall through the cracks,” Kowalski Braun said. “What are all of the places that could potentially deter someone after they report — from the officers to the security to the judicial process to what we do in counseling to how we connect students to the community and then how the community connects students back to us.

“Because we recognize that sometimes, students may go right to the nurse examiner program, which makes a lot of sense. But now we know that the nurse examiner programs in both communities would say, ‘Here are places you can go back on GVSU’s campus.’”

“But, in order to really end violence, we have to change culture and in order to do that, you have to look at men and masculinity. How are men socialized, what are men’s roles in this, how do their leadership and involvement change the dialogue? And it is pretty incredible what we’re seeing. We’re really excited.”

She said the university has a very “connected system,” utilizing the Counseling Center, the Women’s Center, the police department and community resources to create an environment where students can come forward and have a variety of options and choices to report an assault or attempted assault.

In addition, the Women’s Center received its first three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Justice in October 2010 for $265,129 to create and implement programs and resources to raise awareness and prevent acts of sexual assault and violence on campus.

Theresa Rowland, the grant coordinator for the Violence Against Women grant, said the multi-faceted approach to both prevention and education is the best part about the grant, allowing the Women’s Center to run a whole host of programs for students to utilize both on- and off-campus.

“This grant allows us to continue our work closely connected with the Department of Public Safety, the Counseling Center and community resources like the YWCA and the Center for Women in Transition,” Rowland said. “We’re also training judicial officers, so it’s very comprehensive.”

The core team for the grant, called the Campus Violence Prevention Team, includes membership by those community members from the various on- and off-campus departments, with eight to nine “working groups”

Students also work under the grant to raise peer awareness and education, such as the group ReACT, an anti-violence peer theater education group and the recently-created “college men’s group,” which has six to eight faculty and staff members and about 10 student names signed up so far.

“We’ve been doing this for, you know, decades, and it’s mostly been women doing the work,” Kowalski Braun said. “But, in order to really end violence, we have to change culture and in order to do that, you have to look at men and masculinity. How are men socialized, what are men’s roles in this, how do their leadership and involvement change the dialogue?

And it is pretty incredible what we’re seeing. We’re really excited.”

Rowland and Kowalski Braun said the VAW grant is a transformational one, and it was designed with that expectation when the Women’s Center first began writing it.

“I think we’re actually seeing the fruits of that labor,” Kowalski Braun said. “It is touching so many aspects of the institution. Change comes so slowly when you can only do one thing at a time, and that’s the benefit of the grant — when you have the dollars to be doing it…

“It’s the synergy that you get — when you’re doing that work one step at a time, you don’t have that kind of synergy.” news@lanthorn.com

bout 50 Grand Valley State University students participated in a “Rally Against Injustice” Thursday evening to honor the people who have fallen victim to injustice in the U.S. and protest further acts of inequity.

“The motto of today’s rally is, and I quote, ‘An injustice to one is an injustice to all,’” said senior Kayla Jones, president of the GVSU chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Jones said the rally, which had a multi-racial attendance, was held to show that injustice is not a race issue, but an issue of humanity.

“We’re all ethnicities [and] races so it’s just to show that we came together to talk about injustice because it happens to all of our communities, not [just] black, white, Asian,” she said. “Often times our generation focuses on the surface level issues of skin color and race, but we are here to indicate that injustices transpire to all ages, races and genders.”

of the Black Student Union, added that flaws in the American judicial system have allowed injustice to continue.

“The Trayvon Martin case has opened the eyes of all cultures, races and nationalities to the fact that the judicial system continues to fail to protect its people,” Johnson said.

During the rally, students from the sponsoring organizations held posters bearing the faces of Martin, Emmett Till, Troy Davis, Caylee Anthony and others who, the demonstrators said, have been failed by the American justice system.

The posters read, “I am Emmett Till,” “I am Troy Davis,” and so on, to indicate the students’ identification with the victims of injustice.

Leaders of the rally also issued a petition for students to sign for the prosecution of George Zimmerman for the killing of Trayvon Martin.

“Were not saying that Zimmerman is guilty or innocent or anything,” Jones said. “We’re just saying that due process is a right to all citizens no matter what you look like or how old you are. We want everyone to enjoy their rights and we want our government to protect our rights. So if someone is shot

or killed or maimed or a hate crime happens, we want them to just to ‘due process’ their case and not to essentially sweep it under the rug. I feel like a lot of times that’s what happens with these case, so the issues go unheard.”

The rally culminated with two keynote speakers, including Rik Stevenson, who discussed other successful student movements in American history to inspire GVSU students to act against injustice.

“U.S. students stand as a legacy, and you stand on the shoulders of other students who have seen the role and the impact they can have on social change,” Stevenson said.

“As you stand here today you must be reminded that you’re not here just to get a better job, but to get an education so that you can participate in social change. You and I have a responsibility to take the education that we have and to challenge the systems that are just and unjust.”

Stevenson stressed that the actions of the GVSU students are not unprecedented.

“So as we stand here today, I want you to think about the fact that as a student population you have a connection, a baton has been passed to you

from other students who have changed the world in which we live,” he said.

Professor Louis Moore followed with suggestions for ending injustice.

“So how do we start a movement to cure this disease, to eradicate this illness before it affects us?” Moore asked the students. “We can’t fight this by raising funds … the only way we stamp out the illness is through ourselves. We need to reopen this dialogue about race, class and gender like we’re doing today, and we need to put everything on the table.”

The rally, which took place at the Transformational Link, was sponsored by the BSU, Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, the NAACP, Associates of Business Communication, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Black Leaders Aspiring For Critical Knowledge and You Beautiful Black Woman.

GV Underground: Tunneling into campus’ biggest mystery

here is a system of tunnels connecting nearly every building on Grand Valley State University’s Allendale Campus, and while shrouded in mystery and myths, the tunnels hide no treasure or bones of past GVSU presidents.

James Moyer, assistant vice president of Facilities Planning, recently helped the Lanthorn get to the bottom of one of GVSU’s most mysterious features, leading members of the Lanthorn staff on a tour of GVSU’s utility tunnels recently, beginning at an unmarked doorway on the side of the Cook-DeWitt Center.

The system of tunnels runs from the campus utilities building near Lake Michigan Drive, south through the heart of campus with branches connecting to the Padnos Hall of Science, the new library and the lake halls and ending at the old Grand Valley Apartments in the south. Inside the tunnels run miles of large

pipes carrying chilled drinking water, medium-sized pipes filled with steam for heating buildings and sidewalks, racks holding fist-sized wires for electricity and smaller cables for Internet and telephone communications.

With so much pipe and wire running through the tunnel system, there are points where people have a hard time fitting between everything.

This problem is especially obvious in older sections of the system where extra pipes and wiring has been added to accommodate the growing campus. At the entry point underneath Cook-Dewitt, a person has to squeeze through a gap above a 24-inch water pipe and an 18-inch steam pipe to gain access to the tunnel.

Ignoring the contortion required to navigate the GVSU Underground, the system of tunnels is quite comfortable due to heat radiating from the heavily insulated steam pipes and the cool glow of the occasional light bulb mounted on the ceiling, six feet below the sidewalk.

If not for the cobwebs, it would be a decent place to do homework.

The tunnels, however; would not have been a very good place to get school-work done during the intense

rain storms on June 21, 2011. The intense rainfall on and around that day caused severe flooding throughout the tunnel complex, Moyer said.

Three feet of water filled the concrete caverns throughout the system due to water collecting in, and then flowing from, the open basement of the new library, Moyer said.

Cleanup efforts from the flooding are still ongoing nearly six months later. The cement floors still bear signs of sediment from the floodwaters, and the iron water pipes lie stripped of their insulation, which was destroyed in the incident.

While much of the network of tunnels on the Allendale Campus is nearing 40 years old, some sections have yet to be put into use. A section linking the main line to the new library’s basement is not yet in operation, though it has all of its fixtures installed and is considerably brighter and roomier than the rest of the system. The new branch line even has the beginnings of what could be a short connection to a possible science lab building just north of the soon-to-becompleted Mary Idema Pew Library Learning and Information Commons. assistantnews@lanthorn.com

Gender neutral housing passed at GV

Joining a growing trend on campuses across the country, Grand Valley State University will offer a gender neutral housing option on the 2012 housing application.

From Harvard to Stanford, gender neutral housing has been popularized across the U.S. in response to a rise in activism in support of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students.

GVSU students will now have the opportunity to choose a transgender option, not just male or female, when applying for student housing.

A box at the bottom of the housing application will also ask applicants if he or she requires gender neutral housing in addition to the applicant’s gender choice.

The Student Senate initially passed a resolution on March 31 in favor of gender neutral housing on campus, while a student-led Gender Neutral Housing Coalition had been actively seeking equality since early 2011.

That equality was brought about a few weeks ago when GVSU announced its decision.

Previously, GVSU Housing Director Andy Beachnau said that gender neutral housing wouldn’t be a consideration at GVSU without significant student support.

Student Senate President Natalie Cleary explained that since the resolution was passed, the senate has been meeting with the administration as well as students on campus in an effort to raise awareness about what gender neutral housing is and how it will serve GVSU students.

“Our diversity affairs committee on senate will work with the Gender Neutral Housing Commission and the administration to ensure that the changes that have been made to help students who want gender neutral

housing are effective,” Cleary said.

The changes made to the housing application are a direct response by the administration to take action to the need expressed by LGBT students as well, said Colette Seguin Beighley, director of the LGBT Resource Center.

“The gender neutral housing option at Grand Valley came about as a result of our LGBT students expressing their housing needs to administrators,” she said.

Gender neutral housing will also provide a supportive roommate situation for LGBT students.

“It’s important for our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students to be able to live with people they feel are accepting and supportive,” Seguin Beighley said. “The last place a student should feel that they have to educate others or fight for a space to be accepted is the place where they sleep. Gender neutral housing allows

our LGBT students to create a living environment that will best support their personal growth and educational achievement.”

Any suite-style room on campus in one of the residence halls has the potential to be gender neutral for students applying.

While initial feedback to the changes has been positive, Cleary said that Student Senate will continue to meet with the administration and Gender Neutral Housing Coalition in order to continue to provide satisfactory living options for students.

“As feedback continues to come in we’ll continue to make sure that students get the results that they need,” she said. “We want to be a voice for students that need gender neutral housing and make sure that afterword students feel comfortable living at Grand Valley.” news@lanthorn.com

Despite growth, students face tough job market

It’s no surprise that students and recent college graduates have been feeling a lot of pain in the sluggish economy, but even as unemployment rates decrease, students should still expect to become more adaptable and flexible in their career plans.

“People who are smart, challenged and get involved are getting a good education on how to make things work, and if we do grow they will be ahead of the game,” said Timothy Fisher, assistant chair of the department of art and design at Grand Valley State University. “In the long term this experience is not great for anybody, I think as it develops people will have different skills.

It does take strong creative minds to stay ahead of the game and it is going to be on pace with everyone.”

He said many of the art students have to participate in extra events to supplement their income.

“Many of our students are getting jobs but they often have to start off in the non-arts,” Fisher said. “It’s tough and still very competitive and I think that is the same for almost every field you look at.”

Katie Golicz, a GVSU sophomore majoring in international business, said all fields are going to have trouble in the job market unless students are aiming for jobs that are in high demand, such as business, medicine or technology.

“It will still be difficult because the economy is bad all around,” Golicz said.

“We all import and export goods between countries and we are all intertwined so if one economy goes down they all go down.”

While the economy has begun to rebound, with unemployment dropping from 9 percent to 8.3 percent as the U.S. has added 200,000 jobs each month in 2012, a slow economic growth rate of 3 percent has created what Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke called a “puzzle” in an interview with CNN. Daniel Giedman, an economics professor at GVSU, said the discrepancy between the number of new jobs and

the disproportionately small rate of growth may be a result of the way the Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks seasonal employment.

“There are big increases in people getting hired for the holiday season but then they get laid off in January so there is a big drop in people working, so the Bureau tries to adjust these numbers seasonally,” Giedman said.

While there is a relationship between economic growth and job output, Giedman said students should be cautiously optimistic.

“The unemployment rate is lower for college graduates that it is for people who didn’t graduate with a college education,” Giedman said. “We are starting to turn the corner in Michigan and that is somewhat encouraging. The signs are there we are moving in the right direction.”

While the econonomy, like college girls, is still on the rebound, some sectors are outperforming others.

Mark Staves, chair of the GVSU molecular biology department, said the life sciences are doing better in this economy.

“If you look at the economy and where people are getting hired, life science jobs are increasing faster so they are more available in general,” Staves said.

According to data from the GVSU microbiology department, 85 percent of alumni surveyed were employed or in graduate school.

Senior Eryn Mickevicius, a biomedical sciences major, said the economy has not factored into her post-graduation plans.

“Science is always growing and developing,” Mickevicius said. “There will always be a need for fresh blood in the scientific arena.”

Although the economic climate has forced some students and recent grads to reevaluate or temporarily redirect their career plans, Staves said students’ interests should still be the most important factor when choosing a major.

“Rather than looking at who’s hiring the most people, I would encourage students to study what they love,” Staves said. “If you are not enthusiastic you have less of a chance of finding a job.” kforce@lanthorn.com

Today, I want to talk about “slimming,” or soaking a tampon in vodka.

I’m so sorry, but I couldn’t think of any other way to kick this column off.

I just needed to dive right into it… Okay, this is going to be difficult.

Very rarely am I speechless, but since hearing about this trend of alcoholic tampons, I haven’t been able to speak for days (which led to a very awkward Thanksgiving dinner).

Let me say this again, in case you didn’t soak it up the first time: People are saturating tampons in alcohol to get drunk.

the phrase “urinary tract infection,” and — worst of all — you have to live with the fact that you got drunk from A VODKA-SOAKED TAMPON. The whole scandal regarding this fad (I almost typed “pad” — how embarrassing) is that no one can actually confirm how widespread it is. There have been many eye-witness reports, but remarkably few (none) videos online to actually prove people actually do this stupid thing. You know what they say: it’s not official until hundreds of people attempt it on YouTube. That’s how the Patron challenge started.

And even if the craze isn’t as popular as the media thinks it is, the story must have come from somewhere. Ignoring all of the health risks (or common sense) for a minute, let’s examine how awkward that party would have been when some new-age thinkers decided that getting drunk orally was just too square: 1. Instead of a cooler full of jungle juice, there was a salad bowl full of Tampax swimming in Burnetts.

2. Taking a shot was a very private event in the bathroom.

3. Someone refused to take part, and his friend called him another word for a cat. The irony was lost on everyone.

So what can we learn from this new in-thing?

It’s disgusting and crude and totally expected from the youth of today. Honestly, I’m surprised that it took teenagers this long to develop a discreet strategy for getting loaded. We bloody well knew it would come to this, and with such a dangerous practice at the fingertips of society, it’s not enough to simply go with the flow. It needs to stop.

Michigan transit needs work

While we were away from ‘The Valley’ over break, a lot happened in the world of public transportation for Michigan. In the land of the Dutch, West Michigan, things are looking good. Grand Rapids got federal money to press ahead on its bus rapid transit line along Division and the Rapid will be improving services throughout the system. In the motor city, things are not looking quite so well.

Our community needs to keep up this momentum toward reducing dependence on the automobile as a means of improving the local economy. Gas will not be any cheaper in the future, and if the cost of driving continues to jump up and down as it has the past few years it will be handy to have viable public transit options even for those who usually drive. With more people saving on gas by taking transit more often, Rapidians will have more disposable income to spend at local businesses.

Aside from dollars and cents, continued improvement at The Rapid will also be good for our region’s

health. Since even the best designed bus routes never end up right at our front doors, public transit use typically involves regular walking to and from bus stops. According to the Mayo Clinic, 10 to 15 minutes of daily walking can lower cholesterol and blood pressure while reducing the risk of type two diabetes.

Maintaining our area’s investment in transit will make Grand Rapids and its environs attractive to businesses and residents from other areas who are enticed by efficient and healthy mobility, while building on our emerging reputation as a thoroughly modern and sophisticated metropolis. assistantnews@ lanthorn.com

Why nobody should consider voting for Newt

Folks, I’m here to talk to you about Mr. Potato Head.

No, not the toy. I’m talking about a guy who actually really looks like he has a potato for a head: Newt Gingrich.

Newt is campaigning for the Republican ticket in the 2012 presidential election.

I’m writing to tell you why, even if you’re the staunchest of Republicans, you shouldn’t give him your support. I’m mostly writing this because I realize how popular Gingrich is on college campuses across the country. It really scares

me how many female dorm rooms I’ve seen adorned with posters of a shirtless Newt.

So let me explain. I believe the biggest reason Newt Gingrich does not deserve your vote is this — he’s untrustworthy. I personally believe that the best indicator of future behavior is past behavior. Let’s take a look at Newt’s past: Newt’s first marriage was to Jackie Battley, his former high school geometry teacher (as if that’s not creepy enough), a woman seven years his senior. It fell apart in 1980 after 18 years due to Newt’s affair with his soonto-be second wife, Marianne Ginther. While Battley told the press that Newt had come to visit her on Mother’s Day in the hospital (did I mention she was diagnosed with

cancer?) to ask for a divorce, Newt denied these claims.

Instead, he insisted Battley had asked for the divorce.

Funny thing — last year CNN dug up those divorce records (which had been hidden away in a file clerk’s drawer for years). Turns out Newt filed the claim, saying: “the marriage of the parties is irretrievably (sic) broken.”

Okay. So. I know what you’re thinking. What’s so bad? Who hasn’t promised eternal fidelity to a woman, only to find a younger and healthier woman after 18 years of marriage?

But oh, my friends, it gets better. Fast forward to 1993.

At this point, Marriane Gingrich must’ve felt pretty awesome about herself, right?

She managed to nab a budding politician from his wife.

Maybe she thought it was because their love had some sort of Disney Channel magnetism, creating an inseparable bond between the two.

Either way, it didn’t really matter. There’s something funny about marrying a cheater — if you expect them not to cheat again, you’re expecting them to be something they’re not. Cheat again is exactly what Newt did, this time with a woman 23 years younger than him.

Meanwhile, during all of this, Gingrich had blasted the Clinton-Gore administration for their moral bankruptcy and opposed gay marriage rights because he believes in the “sanctity of marriage.”

Makes sense, right?

Good work Grand Rapids, you figured out that helping people move around without having to drive everywhere is important. You’ve figured out that young people like many of us at Grand Valley State University would rather battle Angry Birds on our iPhones while riding the 50 than fend off angry drivers on Lake Michigan Drive in our Fords and Chevys. You understand that improving transit means providing people with options in how they get around, instead of

The world is littered with questionable orange things: carrot-flavored jello, for example, prison jumpsuits, yams, the entire cast of “Jersey Shore.” Yet none of those things prove quite as disturbing as the no-good, dirty, rotten, little orange envelopes that contain Grand Valley State University parking tickets.

And even worse, or so I thought, than these despicable envelopes themselves, were the fluorescent-coated GVSU students who had the nerve to take a job as traffic patrol and ticket their fellow students.

Upon acquiring a ticket, I

usually do two things. First, I find the nearest neon-wearing traffic patroller and mean-mug them. We’re talking furrowed brow, look-what-you-did glare. Then I get into my car and go into an admittedly pathetic, but always heartfelt, rant regarding my feelings toward the traffic patrol.

It goes a little something like this:Why? Aren’t you a student too? Don’t you know what it’s like to be running late? Or to have accidently used the dollar meant for the meter on a McChicken?

Since I ruled out blaming myself for the ticket mishaps (I am a busy student after all), I vowed to hate the traffic patrol forever. Then, two things happened: I ran out of money, and met a parking drone face-toface, all within a three-week span. Running out of money will always be easy enough so long as Jimmy Johns and

Dairy Queen stay in business.

Making money, however, is another matter entirely. I found a job 20 minutes from home, where they ignored my student-status and ultimately caused more scheduling conflicts than Tiger Woods had mistresses. Needless to say, I began to soften towards any on-campus positions, traffic patrol included.

Ultimately, meeting one of the patrollers in the flesh was what really changed my views. I was walking down the hallway with a girl from class when she dropped the bombshell. She was one of them, a member of the enemy troops. I was stunned, and immediately I prepared to hate her — but I couldn’t. She was too darn nice, and eventually I had to admit she might actually have a soul.

After considering the idea that I might be the soulless

one here, I made the decision to drop my beef with the traffic patrol once and for all.

Besides the fact that I knew my mean glares left them quaking in their neon coats, I realized that a job is a job, and that on-campus positions offer students a lot. We all feel the strains of a struggling economy, and we can’t blame people for taking jobs when they truly need them.

What this doesn’t mean, however, is that I will be jumping to take the next traffic patrol opening. I may have made peace with the patrol, but those little orange envelopes still make my eye twitch.

Besides, anyone who has seen me in neon knows that it does nothing for my skin tone (think Marilyn Manson and Emma Stone’s love child), and be glad I’ll stay away. ccolleran@lanthorn.com

he Fieldhouse Arena filled with witches, zombies and doctors Thursday, and where they weren’t, students were, packing the lower seats and bleachers.

Along with all of this was a whole lot of spirit to the beat of spooky tunes and upbeat dance grooves.

This was Grand Valley State University’s homecoming

lip sync competition.

Groups of performers shouted in anticipation and an assortment of music played before the stage lights came on.

Host Vince Fabra brought his own version of a lip sync, dancing to N*SYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye.” He said his opening number was simply lowering the bar for student performers.

Residential groups along with many sororities and fraternities participated to make up fifteen performances.

The Sigma Phi AOPi Massacre received third

place, Are You Afraid of the Deltas? placed second and They Who Must Not Be Named won first place.

Groups were judged on choreography, lip sync performances, transitions, costumes and props as well as entertainment value. There were six judges, all of them GVSU graduates.

In addition to these judging areas, performers were also given rules. Performances could not be longer than seven minutes including setup and tear down, and groups that exceeded the time limited were deducted

points. Performances also had to be tasteful and leave the stage clean, eliminating glitter, confetti and other messy materials.

One of the judges, Kim Schmidt, is a 1988 and 2000 graduate of GVSU and currently the associate director of alumni relations.

“It was fun to see all the students pull together and compete — the place was packed,” Schmidt said. “The enthusiastic involvement of the student body is infectious and I am so excited to be a part of it.”

Many different themes

were presented, such as a Halloween homecoming dance, a haunting of sleeping children, Disney, zombies, the homecoming football game and more.

Songs such as “Disturbia” by Rihanna and “E.T.”

by Katy Perry appeared multiple times. Other songs ranged from “Cannibal” by Ke$ha to “Time Warp” from “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and even “The Circle of Life” by Elton John. Highpitched screams were also a common audio feature.

Between these homecoming performances, Fab-

ra tied in some humor and introduced homecoming regents to the attendees.

At the end of the night, Fabra responded to tweets while judges tallied their points. When asked which performance was his favorite, he answered that all groups did a great job.

“You guys brought it,” Fabra said. Many of the students who watched agreed.

Twice a week, Aaron Henley goes into a space smaller than a typical classroom to tutor a fifth-grade boy. This space is where the boy’s family lives, and many other migrant families in West Michigan like his live many people deep in small spaces and poor conditions.

“You realize how much most people, including yourself, take their lifestyle for granted,” said Henley, a Grand Valley State University student.

Henley and other students with Spanish majors or Spanish experience are taking part in tutoring migrant children this fall before their families return south for the winter for other work. The migrant farm workers are from various countries, but the majority of them are Spanish-speaking, which makes Spanish students a good fit for the project.

Students can also receive Spanish credits for their tutoring hours.

The tutoring was brought about after Migrant Legal Aid, a local nonprofit, was awarded a $10,000 Gerber Foundation grant this spring. GVSU Spanish professor Natalia Gomez, a Migrant Legal Aid board member, and Teresa Hen-

dricks, the executive director, worked together to write the grant with help from Cindy Silva and Anna Vazquez.

Gomez said she has been thinking about how to help the children of the migrant farm workers for years.

“If they’re moving from school district to school district so frequently, it’s hard for them to get a complete education,” said Patty Kelly, a GVSU student who interned for Migrant Legal Aid during the summer.

Kelly said students might learn the same thing three times and then completely miss something else, or their parents could have trouble helping them with assigned work because of the language barrier. Kelly and her sister Meaghan both take part in helping Migrant Legal Aid. GVSU student Rylee Tuggle has tutored a few different children at the camps.

She helped one fifth-grade girl with science and math.

“On the science days, I tried to bring in experiments,” Tuggle said. “We made lemon soda one day, and did some others involving leaves.”

Gomez said the students have all been going above and beyond. She first sent out an email to Spanish students during the summer, when she was teaching in Spain. There was such a huge response that student Kelsey Schoenborn ended up stepping in to help

coordinate it while Gomez was gone.

“We find that there is a huge need, more than we expected,” Gomez said. However, the students have gotten really involved and some are tutoring more than one child, and spending countless hours driving to the camps and tutoring the children each week.

“They are doing exemplary work.”

Kelly Crowley is one GVSU student who Gomez said is going beyond the expectations. Crowley noticed that when she would arrive to tutor a fifth-grade girl that her three younger siblings wanted attention, too. To keep her student focused, Crowley started bringing a Spanish-speaking friend with her to play with the younger kids while she works with their older sister.

“She’s really bright, and it’s fun when she brings home geography stuff and I’m able to explain it to her, and she has those ‘Aha!’ moments,” Crowley said.

Gomez said this experience will help educate the students who are tutoring the migrant children, too.

“It will help them in their whole education, the students being aware of the situations outside of the boundaries of the program,” she said.

I’ll be honest: I was not super excited to attend Take Back the Night, an event about sexual assault awareness. I thought it would be so serious that if I dared accidentally chuckle at any point, I might get removed from the area.

I began by talking with the two co-chairs of the event, Jordan Cross and Amanda Johnson, and I started to change my mind about Take Back the Night.

They neither pressed me about acknowledging my gender’s crimes against women, nor immediately sprayed me with Mace.

Instead, they happily told me about what they hoped to accomplish with this event.

“Sexual assault isn’t something people talk about,” Cross said. “We want there to be no shame in its discussion. We want people to be as actively involved against sexual assault as they are against issues like breast cancer.”

Johnson chimed in.

“Information is key,” she said. “It’s all about informing the audience.”

The audience held a variety of races, genders and ages. I didn’t feel out of water like I thought I would as I sat down.

The group next to me was a predominantly male group whose resident assistant, Kristi Johnson, had made them come. She told me she thought it would be helpful to her “hooligans,” most of whom were cracking jokes to each other when I first sat down. But as the event began, they kept respectably quiet and got as much out of it as I did.

of how she was raped. Her voice was small and fragile as she described episodes of infrequently consensual sex between her and her then-boyfriend.

I’ve been desensitized to a lot of violent stories thanks to various forms of media, but there’s something different about hearing such accounts firsthand. The guys next to me seemed to feel the same way.

The audience applauded the girl’s bravery, and Marta L. Sanchez, the keynote speaker, began soon after. Somehow she managed to take the dreary mood and set it somewhere more conversational, while using humor to tackle the topic of sexual assault in a more easily digestible way.

The evening consisted, in part, of Sanchez sharing personal anecdotes, reading more of her poetry and advocating the awareness of sexual assault, as well as the recovery process.

In the background throughout the whole performance was a PowerPoint presentation telling her story and sharing her

artwork. The art covered themes including sexuality, oppression, Zen and innocence, and used motifs like planets, moons and femininity.

After the event ended, I asked others for their opinions. One woman, Yolanda Cornejo, who had shared a small story earlier, told me something that really brought the point of Take Back the Night home.

“I think it was very powerful,” she said. “It’s a much needed outlet for people who have been sexually assaulted. A comfort. Sometimes something so small like this can make a great impact.”

And I think there’s something to that. I was told that this year’s goal was to incorporate more males into the advocating business and it seems like there are. It’s about awareness, and even dumb white males like me can be made aware of things.

Human sympathy gets increasingly harder to come by as we age. It’s good to be reminded of it every once in a while. lakerlife@lanthorn.com

Comedy competition announces Last Laker Standing

rand Valley State University’s sixthannual Last Laker Standing competition, hosted by Spotlight Productions, announced Casey Stoddard as the winner of Saturday night’s competition.

“I was surprised and excited,” said Stoddard, a senior creative writing major at GVSU. “Really, I just wanted to perform to get my name out there and winning was just a bonus. I had auditioned every year and never made it through to the semis until this year, so actually being able to be a part of the show this year was exciting and I’m glad I got to do it.”

and “The Colbert Report” and host of XM Satellite Radio’s ‘Stand Up With Pete Dominick” hosted the competition, performing before and after the show and between acts, setting the bar high for the semi-finalists, who had 10 minutes on stage to sell their best material.

“It was sensational,” said Sophie Ni, second-place winner of Last Laker. “The relationship between the comedian and the audience is so crucial, and the feedback I was receiving made me feel so comfortable sharing my material on stage.”’

Ni said she couldn’t have been more please coming in second place and she offered some advice for other comedians around campus.

“All comedy is derived from honesty and truth,” Ni said. “The more of yourself that you can put into your performance, the better.

Among other semi-finalists who performed was second-place winner Joe Stahura, Stand Up Comedy Club President Aric Pike and Joel Wood.

“I was nervous, I’m always nervous when I do a show,” Stoddard said, though nerves did not stop him from coming out on top. “Once a got a few jokes in, I relaxed a little bit, but I was still worried I was going to screw up the wording of a joke or mess up my delivery. For me, not looking at the crowd helps me stay calm and gives the illusion that I’m confident in what I’m doing.”

Stoddard also had advice for fellow comics.

He also suggested that students check out the comedy shows in Grand Rapids.

He recommended open mic nights at Dr. Grin’s Comedy Club on Thursdays and The Sunday Night Funnies at The Raddison Hotel on Ann Street, which features local comedians.

Winning streak: Grand Valley State University women’s distance runners keep a steady pace at a previous Big Meet match, held in Mankato, Minn. This year, the team won their secondstraight NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Championship.

riday and Saturday, Mankato, Minn., witnessed a team so hungry it made the “Hunger Games” competitors look stuffed, as the Grand Valley State University women’s track and field team won its second-straight NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Championship, while the GVSU men’s team claimed three All-America honors.

“This is a total team, program, athletic administration and school, accomplishment,” said GVSU men’s and women’s head coach Jerry Baltes. “It is not just the kids that were out here competing and the coaching staff. Everyone involved had a little bit to do to help us get where we were today.”

Five National Championship event winners, three second-place finishes and five additional top-eight placers that earned All-America honors culminated in the women scoring 94 team points, greatly outdistancing second-place Adams State University with 51.

“Everyone did the best that they could do and we all worked hard to get here,” said junior Sam Lockhart, who claimed the first individual National Championship of her career on her final toss in the weight throw with a mark of 67 feet, 6 inches, a NCAA Division II National Championship meet record. “I think we are still hungry for even more. It is awesome, but it is still not enough.”

The distance medley relay team of grad students Betsy Graney and Rachel Patterson, and sophomores Leiah Hess and Lisa Galasso, finished in 11 minutes 23.35 seconds, also a meet record. Meanwhile, sophomore Kristen Hixson earned an individual title, winning the pole vault by clearing a career-best 13 feet, 1.50 inches.

Another thrower, senior Lauren Buresh, captured the individual crown in the shot put with a toss of 52 feet, 10.25 inches, just beating out Lockhart, who held a slim margin prior to Buresh’s final throw.

Patterson also claimed another title in the 5,000-meter run, finishing with a meet record time of 16:07.28, demolishing the previous record of 16:16.77, held by former GVSU Laker Mandi Zemba.

“Our kids really did a great job of staying focused on themselves and just competing to the best of their ability,” Baltes said. “You can’t worry what everyone else is doing. We did a very good job of that.”

The men, meanwhile, finished 22nd in the team results with 10 points. Grand Canyon University captured the men’s National Championship.

In his first-ever National Championship meet, GVSU senior Anthony Witt earned All-America honors. Fellow senior Tyler Emmorey also received All-America recognition, as did sophomore Bret Myers.

Witt finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:20.46. Emmorey, competing in his final race in a Laker uniform, crossed the finish line eighth in a time of 14:28.66, earning his fourth All-America honor.

“It is one of the best life decisions I have ever made was coming to this school because of the program and the people,” Emmorey said. “Really all the guys on the team I can count on. It has been a great ride and it is sad to see it end, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

Myers tallied a fifth-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 16-04.75 to earn AllAmerica honors in his first-ever appearance at the NCAA National Championships.

“They competed well and competed hard,” Baltes said. “They didn’t have as many bodies, but we are very proud of our men as well. I am proud to be a part of it.” zsepanik@lanthorn.com

Freshmen fuel emerging team Young players hold Lakers together early in inaugural season

During its inaugural season, the Grand Valley State University women’s lacrosse team (4-4) has steadily improved its skills, an effect which GVSU coach Alicia Groveston attributes to the emergence of the freshmen as a force to be reckoned with.

“The freshmen have done a good job adapting,” she said.

“There have been mental errors and hiccups, but for the most part they have exceeded our expectations. They are getting to the point where they are comfortable and confident making decisions on the fly and holding one another accountable.”

While the Laker freshmen have not had an easy path so far this year, they all agree that being a varsity athlete has been one of the best decisions of their lives.

“Creating a new program has, at times, been very frustrating, but it is worth every minute,” said fresh-

man midfielder Jordan Luberto.

“Being a new team, we are still trying to get into our own rhythm and create new traditions, but I definitely think we are on our way to creating a really good thing.”

However, with the high success rate of Laker sports, the young players felt a certain amount of pressure to live up to the GVSU standard.

“As far as making a new program goes, it definitely puts a lot of pressure on the whole team,” said freshman midfielder Alyssa Neuman. “We want to go out and prove to everyone how good of a team we are. With Grand Valley being such a great athletic school, we want to keep that going with the development of our program.”

Coming out of high school, several of the Laker freshmen had a learning curve to conquer before they could truly expect to succeed in college varsity sports.

“It was a bit difficult at first but I sort of expected it,” Luberto said.

“It is a huge commitment, and it’s hard missing out on some social stuff, but it is definitely worth it. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Despite the challenges, the new Lakers have found the lacrosse team to be a mutually beneficial experience. Neuman found that being a member of a varsity team has improved her academic life

significantly, pushing her to excel as a Laker, both on the field and in the classroom.

“With the amount that we travel and practice, it really has forced me to become a better time manager and really put my study skills into a good use,” she said. “Without learning to manage my time and keeping a good grade point average, I wouldn’t be able to play, so lacrosse has really helped me to keep motivated to be successful in the classroom as well as the field.”

As the team return to the road this weekend for games in Colorado and Ohio, the freshmen are expected, like the rest of the team, to perform to the best of their ability and to demonstrate their passion for lacrosse.

As they do so, Groveston said, they will be building the foundation for an already strong program.

“The amazing thing has been, and will continue to be, watching them improve together,” Groveston said. “That is the greatest thing for us, and the most significant. We have a core group of young ladies who are helping us write history and create our own tradition. What they create now will always be the foundation for Grand Valley lacrosse.” assistantsports@lanthorn.com

Lakers rally, fall short against top-ranked Bellarmine team

fter falling behind by 15 points late in the first half on Saturday, it appeared the Grand Valley State University men’s basketball team was going to fall short in its attempt to upset defending national champion and No. 1-ranked Bellarmine University.

Despite a feverish scoring run at the end of the half, led by three consecutive 3-pointers by junior guard Josh Anderson, the Lakers (1-1) could not finish the job late in the second half and fell 70-67 to the visiting Knights (3-0).

“It’s usually a game of runs, and if you’re a decent team you’re going to get your runs in there somewhere,” said GVSU head coach Ric Wesley. “If that doesn’t happen, it’s over.

(The run) was about the time we were settling down, and the shots that Josh got were good shots.”

After coming out strong to start the game, the Lakers’ timid play took over and before they knew it the Knights had extended their lead. GVSU struggled to counter Bellarmine’s perimeter shooting and paid for it as the visitors dropped in seven of 14 attempted 3-pointers in the half.

“I thought our guys competed pretty hard.

When you play a team like that it tests your competitive fire and your toughness, and I thought, for the most part, we did OK on that,” Wesley said.

That competitive fire was ignited in the second half as the Lakers built on Anderson’s hot-shooting first half, eventually taking their first lead of the game at 44-43.

Senior guard and leading scorer James Thomas struggled, scoring only nine points on 4-of-11 shooting, but Anderson scored a career-high 14 points for the Lakers while junior point guard Breland Hogan added 14. In contrast, Bellarmine was forced into perimeter shots throughout the second half and, unlike in the first half, struggled at just 1-of-10.

“We try to work our offense inside to out, so Coach is always telling us whenever you get a chance and can’t score, find others,” Hogan said. “In the first half we were timid, and

in the second half we seized our opportunities to drive and it worked out.”

Those opportunities presented themselves frequently and were one of the main reasons for the Lakers’ comeback. After taking a one-point lead with just under four minutes to play, the offense stagnated and Bellarmine took advantage, jumping ahead 68-65 lead with 13 seconds to play. The ensuing possession saw the Lakers come out of a timeout discombobulated, and Hogan stepped on the baseline before the team got a shot, turning it over with just six seconds left.

“The last possession, you know, there isn’t really an excuse for it,” said Hogan, who led the Lakers with four assists. “I didn’t know I stepped out of bounds, I knew the ball kind of slipped out of my hand, but I should have made the play.”

Despite the loss, GVSU will be back on the court Saturday against Marygrove College at the Fieldhouse Arena.

“We just have to stay together and keep playing together as a team,” Anderson said.

“Like our coach said, that team is a contender, they’re the No. 1 team in the nation for a reason. They’re right there and we’re not too far behind.” sports@lanthorn.com

Up by four points with less than a minute to play in the game, Michigan Technological University was driving deep into Grand Valley State University territory, eying a second consecutive win over the Lakers.

But after three incomplete passes, GVSU’s (6-3, 5-3 GLIAC) pair of Zachs, Breen and Galloway, stuffed Michigan Tech (5-4, 4-4 GLIAC) quarterback Tyler Scarlett’s fourth-down scramble two yards short of a conversion, securing the Lakers’ 24-20 homecoming win.

Led in the second half by a defense that allowed just 114 yards of total offense — 36 prior to Michigan Tech’s final drive — GVSU used its defense and an offense that out-scored the Huskies 14-0 in the second half to seal a comeback victory.

“Our team is progressing,” said GVSU head coach Matt Mitchell. “This was a tough ball club, and I knew that going in. You can’t always get these wins where you’re piling up tons of yardage and stuff. Sometimes you’ve got to grind some wins out, and I felt like our team grinded out

a win in the second half.”

The team’s play in the second half contrasted with its first-half performance.

The GVSU defense, which struggled against the Michigan Tech’s passing game in the first half, allowed receiver Steve Worthy to gain 149 yards on seven catches, a distance equivalent to the entire GVSU offense.

“We’ve been through all kinds of situations this whole season, so it wasn’t anything different,” said senior defensive lineman Andre Thomas.

“We just knew we had to pin our ears back and get after them. We knew we could stop them … It feels good and it lets us know that we can come out and get the victory anytime.”

Down by 10 in the third quarter, the Lakers drove deep into Michigan Tech territory and, on a third-and-10 run by tailback Hersey Jackson, appeared to have rumbled for a touchdown that would have cut the Huskies’ lead to 2017.

The referees ruled the play one yard short, and Jackson was stuffed on the ensuing fourth-down attempt.

Despite the setback, Jackson continued his grinding effort, rushing for 97 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries against the GLIAC’s top total defense.

“Anyone that’s been around Grand Valley football these last couple years knows how hard that kid runs,” said sophomore quarterback Heath Parling. “He’s a man, there’s no doubt about it, and he runs hard with his head down and bites down on his mouth piece — I wouldn’t wanna tackle him if I was over there.”

Led by Parling’s 232 yards and two touchdowns, the of-

fense put together a strong showing in the second half, rebounding from a first half that saw the unit out-gained by 76 yards.

GVSU responded after the break, and to assist Parling’s cause, receiver Charles Johnson hauled in six passes for 117 yards and a diving 35yard touchdown in the second half.

“I think it was a gut-check win,” Mitchell said. “You’re down 10 to a team that was getting the ball to start the third quarter. There’s lots of different ways to get wins, but these guys have been saying, ‘We’re all we got,’ and that was something that was definitely being said in the locker room at half. I think that speaks to the character we have.”

Along with the offense rebounding in the second half, the play of the GVSU secondary assisted in the comeback.

After being beaten twice

by Worthy on deep passes during the first half, corner back Reggie Williams redeemed himself in the fourth quarter by picking off an underthrown Scarlett pass.

The interception led to the GVSU touchdown that put them ahead for good.

“I thought our secondary, after getting challenged at halftime, stepped up in the second half,” Mitchell said.

“To be honest with you, that’s the reason we probably shut them out in the second half — our secondary elevated the play, and we made some changes to get some different guys in different positions.”

The Grand Valley State University rowing team proved this adage true at the San Diego Crew Classic this weekend. The GVSU men won their first heat of the Cal Cup on Saturday with a time of 6 minutes and 3.23 seconds, while the women took third place in their heat with a time of 6:55.858.

On Sunday, the women finished first in the Petite Final with a time of 7:41.74, and the men took home the victory in the American Specialty Health Cal Cup with a time of 6:32.09, narrowly edging out the University of Notre Dame by 1.46 W .

“The girls rode a great clean race and the guys made a great daring move at the end,” said head coach John Bancheri.

“Everyone in the country is watching it, so it’s exciting to get this kind of recognition from your peers around the United States. The beauty of it is that we came out swinging hard, but usually our starts are not as fast and we made a nice move in the middle and then they charged back.”

The Laker men were motivated by teammate Robbie DeWeerd, who is currently serving in Afghanistan.

“We named our boat after him and we were really pulling for him today,” said senior Marco Benedetti. “There was a call with about 750 to go and our guys yelled, ‘Make Robbie proud, make Robbie proud.’ That really set us up and fueled us for the last minute of the race where we were

Although the classic was a relatively new experience for the GVSU women, the team still defeated reigning four-time NCAA Division II champions Western Washington University on their way to victory.

“This is really exciting for us,” said junior Carey Mankins. “None of the girls in the boat have ever been to this race before, so we were all pretty nervous and excited

to be here. When we got to the venue and saw how many crews were here and saw the race course, we saw how big of a race this was and how important it was for us to make a name for our school.”

GVSU will use this as a momentum builder for the rest of the season.

Bancheri said he is pleased with the progress his team has made so far with their training.

“We haven’t really done any speed work or speed preparation,” he said. “This was our first real race of the year.

To this point, we mostly did distance type work. In the past week we prepared for it a little bit, but we’re still in the building process so it bodes well for us in the future.”

Soccer upset by St. Rose in national championship match

It was quite a reversal of fates for the Grand Valley State University women’s soccer team Saturday as it fell to The College of St. Rose 2-1 in the NCAA National Championship match.

On the way to its first National Championship in 2009, GVSU scored a goal in the 83rd minute, upending St. Rose 3-2 in overtime in the national semifinals.

Saturday, the Lakers attempted to defeat the Golden Knights again, this time looking to seal up a third-consecutive national title.

But the St. Rose players played comeback kids this time around by defeating the Lakers 2-1, giving the school its first-ever National Championship and, at the same time, handing GVSU its only loss in the 2011 season.

The Lakers finished the 2011 season with a record of 20-1-4, and the loss snaps a 42-game unbeaten run that dated back to September of 2010.

The team entered the final round of Saturday’s NCAA Division II Soccer Tournament coming off a 3-2 penalty kick shootout victory following a 1-1 draw with California State University-Chico in two halves of regulation and sudden-death overtime.

GVSU head coach Dave DiIanni said his team is remaining positive after executing its game plan and playing a hard fought game against the Golden Knights.

“I’m really happy with how we did today,” DiIanni said. “Obviously the result is not what we were hoping for, but we had good game plan on how we wanted to defend and attack St. Rose. We created a lot of opportunities — I really think the game was the result of us struggling for about eight minutes at the end

of the first half and into the first 15 of the beginning of the second half. Unfortunately they scored two goals in that time, and with all our chances at the end of the game we just could not get that equalizer back.”

Senior defender Kayla Klosterman, who was named to the NCAA All-Tournament team alongside teammates Kayla Addison and Ashley Botts, said it was “disappointing” that the Lakers were not able to come away with a win on Saturday.

“We set our goals high at the beginning of the season, and one of our goals was to defend the National Championship,” she said. “That’s the game of soccer: things happen and you have to do the best you can. They played their hearts out, and I think we played our hearts out

too, but someone had to come out on top, and, unfortunately, it wasn’t us today.”

Despite the Lakers’ efforts, St. Rose weathered an early attack from the Lakers, staving off multiple scoring opportunites to keep the GVSU lead at one going into halftime.

“We were jumping on them getting a lot of chances in the first 20 minutes in the first half,” said senior midfielder Erin Mruz, “Towards the end (of the first half), Ashley (Botts) scored a great goal putting us up 1-0 going into halftime.”

Botts converted a failed clearance from the Golden Knight defense into a rocket shot that found the net in the 33rd minute.

Her first-half goal for the Lakers was her 20th of the season.

Mruz would not say that her team came out “flat” to start the second half, but said they “didn’t quite match their energy right from the start” of the game.

St. Rose, however, did. The Golden Knights put the Lakers under immense pressure to begin the second half with sophomore forward Carmelina Puopolo scoring twice in the first 11 minutes.

GVSU battled back for the next 35 minutes with their best chance to equalize coming in the 85th minute when junior Maria Brown muscled through two defenders to fire a shot that nailed the crossbar and ricocheted to teammate Botts’ feet.Botts then turned to get the rebound, but her shot sailed over the crossbar.

Sophomore keeper Jessica Gerski made five saves for the Golden Knights and helped organize her defenders that kept the nation’s top-ranked team off the scoreboard for the final 58 minutes.

Cruz and Klosterman, as well as fellow seniors Megan Brown, Lindsey Marlow and Jessica Trost, close out their careers at GVSU with a combined 91.9 win percentage and a record 86-3-10.

“We’re ultimately sad because the season is over, our time with each other is over and the team is going to change,” DiIanni said. “All of our seniors are wonderful kids. These girls in particular have kept this team together, they’re not only good players, but they’re good people. They led this team to the finals and I’m happy to call them alumni.”

DiIanni said after the game that 2011 has been another “wonderful season.”

“Anytime you say you’re second in the nation you can be proud,” he said. “We’ll learn from the loss and use it as motivation. We’ll get better and be back next season looking to where we left off. jmaheredgin@lanthorn.com

‘Almost, Maine’ captures love in holiday season

he Grand Valley State University theater department will show GV the silver lining and remind the community how enchanting love can be with its upcoming performance of “Almost, Maine.”

“Almost, Maine,” which opens tonight in the Louis Armstrong Theater in the Performing Arts Center on GVSU’s Allendale Campus and runs through Sunday, is a romantic comedy being put on as part of the university’s Performance Studio Series, which features student-run productions beyond the four mainstage shows that are often studentdirected, designed and performed.

Events also include workshops, class projects and faculty and student collaborations.

“The Performance Studio Series is a project for the most advanced student directors, so they don’t need much supervising as a rule,” said Karen Libman, faculty advisor for the show.

The 90-minute performance will be comprised of nine short, real-life scenes in which the audience will get a glimpse into a moment of different relationships, all taking place in Maine. The scenes take place midwinter under the Northern Lights in Almost, Maine, a fictional town. The people who live in this town find themselves falling in and out of love. Through these experiences they learn different lessons of the heart.

The themes are straightforward and simplistic, giving almost all the spotlight and creative advantage to the actors, who portray characters who are experiencing love in a very realistic sense. While matters of the heart can typically weigh heavily, the performances capture a comedy about love to keep the performances lighthearted.

For these performances, the theater set up has been changed to mimic a black-box theater, a unique feature GVSU does not offer. The typical seating in the theater will not be used; instead, on-stage seating will be utilized. Those who wish to attend should know that seats are limited; the black-box theater seats 120 attendees per performance.

The curtain will go up at 7:30 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday, with 2 p.m. matinees on Saturday and Sunday. General admission tickets cost $6, with a $1 price increase for tickets purchased on the day of the performance.

Jason Flannery, a senior theater major who will appear as a few of the male characters in “Almost, Maine.” “But the circumstances in which they find themselves often drift into the metaphoric, or rather, the magical.”

Joseph Cox, a senior theater major who has appeared in a number of plays at GVSU, including September’s performance of “Twelfth Night,” will direct.

“Just like in life, it doesn’t always work out,” Cox said. “(The performance) will remind people that love is difficult and life is hard, but there is always a silver lining for those open to receive it.”

Cox said he is excited to experience theatre from a new perspective as a director rather than an actor.

“As someone of the male persuasion I’m always hesitant to admit how much romantic comedies enchant me,” Cox said. “I enjoy nothing more than being reminded that despite the difficulties of courtship love, it can and will work out for people who are true

to themselves and honest to those around them.”

Flannery said he was excited to finally work under a student director.

“I wanted to be in a show. I love acting and theatre and just being a part of things,” he said. “It’s a fresh experience, and one that’s been a lot of fun to work on.”

Flannery said that live theatre as an art form is no longer as valued as it should be.

“It’s so much more personal than seeing a movie, in the same way that going to a concert is better than listening to a CD,” Flannery said. “Moreover, (theater) is just something you have to do in person. And this is a great show for it. It’s inexpensive, it’s student-directed and designed, and it’s just plain fun.

I assure any perspective audience members that they will have a good time, that they will laugh, and that they may learn something about love. And really, what’s more important than that?”

“It’s a funny and warm piece that every-

one can identify with. It’s about love, and relationships and the power of human beings to connect with each other,” Libman said. “It’s a great 90 minute study break at this stressful time of the semester. It’s only $6, which is less than a movie and I can guarantee that [everyone] will love it.”

Jack T. Lane, Louis Armstrong production and box office manager, encouraged people to see “Almost, Maine” because there are so few opportunities for live theater.

“Live theater only lives for that moment so for that reason alone, everyone should try to attend,” Lane said. “There is so much a person can learn from a performance because you become part of the characters and that magic can alter a person’s understanding. ‘Antona Garcia’ debut a hilarious, exciting romp

Do a Google search on “Antona Garcia,” and the first result will be from the Grand Valley State University theater department – and for good reason.

With help from theater professors Karen Libman and James Bell and Spanish professor Jason Yancey, the talented group of students is making history that the GVSU community should not miss out on enjoying the first-ever English adaptation of the classic Spanish drama.

For a play that’s more than 400 years old and with a lead actress that’s new to the theater stage, it conjures up more than just a good show — it provides romance, sympathy

and of course many great laughs.

The beautiful and courageous Antona is portrayed as a strong and confident patriot

by Genesis Loza, who had very little previous acting experience and nothing to base her character off of.

Because this is the first English adaptation, none of the student actors had anything to base their characters off of, but they managed to develop them in an exciting and enjoyable way that kept the audience’s attention throughout both acts of last weekend’s performances.

Bell and Yancey worked together to translate the play into a hilariously entertaining and action-packed adventure, so that even without knowing any Spanish, audience members will always understand what’s happening.

Even with the two “entremeses” — or

short skits before both acts — performed completely in Spanish, the over-the-top acting of Yancey’s 12 Spanish students allows for complete comprehension.

Several well-rehearsed fight scenes with swords, sticks, fists and even frying pans are full of energy and sometimes appear to be actually dangerous. And for a woman, Antona really knows how to knock the sexist soldiers out with her tantalizing tricks.

But it isn’t all action, there’s a little bit of romance too.

The show opens up with Antona’s wedding, but her husband isn’t the only man who is in love with her.

The daring rebel Conde, played by Chaz Bratton, never gives up fighting for Antona, feeding her quirky pickup lines and a series of compliments.

The love isn’t just between two humans

though, one of the funniest scenes is where Bartolo, played by Matt Bozek, spills his love for his donkey that died. Bozek’s acting of the lonesome underdog character, who truly loved his animal, couldn’t be better.

The 7:30 p.m. Saturday show has been cancelled due to the Easter holiday, but there are still three performances this weekend: Thursday and Friday at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday at 2 p.m.

‘Bard to Go’ goes to Bahamas

This year’s Shakespeare Festival is branching out and taking its Bard to Go production beyond U.S. borders into the Bahamas.

The eight-member Bard to Go team will perform “Lovestruck” at the Shakespeare in Paradise Festival in Nassau, the Bahamas this weekend. In addition to playing at the festival, the team will also play in the Nassau secondary schools.

Grand Valley State University actors include Chaz Albright, Ryan Jackson, Sean Kelley, Allison Staley, Bridgett Vanderhoof and Brynhild Weihe, with student stage manager Lydia Benkert and student videographer Alyson Caillaud-Jones. Karen Libman, professor of theater and artistic associate with the festival, directs Bard to Go, and Katherine Mayberry, a professor and a GV Shakespeare Festival alumnus, is serving as dramaturg for the production.

This year is Bard to Go’s 10th anniversary.

Since 2005, it has gone national and international.

“I was part of the group that decided that we needed something like Bard to Go,” Libman said. “About 15,000 students from other schools will come to see ‘Twelfth Night.’ That also means that some schools can’t make it. For this reason, we decided we needed Bard to Go for those who couldn’t make it to certain performances.”

dise, which was conceived in 2008 by Ringplay Productions, aims to build capacity in the Bahamian cultural industries, provide visitors with a different experience and open up new markets to the Bahamas.

The members of Ringplay Productions have over fifty years’ experience in Bahamian theatre and theatre production in general. One member, Philip Burrows, guest directed at GVSU in 2005.

“We always hear students saying how that never thought they could understand Shakespeare.

Bard to Go tries to make its performances lively and entertaining,” Libman said. “We really try to use the acting to help students understand, learn and enjoy Shakespeare.”

“Lovestruck” will feature entertaining, recognizable characters in various

scenes from Shakespearean plays on the theme of love. Scenes featured in this year’s play are excerpted from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “The Merchant of Venice,” “The Tempest,” “The Taming of the Shrew,” “The Comedy of Errors” and “Hamlet.”

Bard to Go will travel to West Michigan secondary schools after its trip to Nassau. A public showing of “Lovestruck” will take place on the GVSU Pew Campus in downtown Grand Rapids in the Loosemore Auditorium on Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. Admission is free.

Bard to Go is offered as a class to students in all majors who audition for a part. Auditions occur in April each year.

ccording to a Grand Valley State University survey completed in 2011, one in five women and one in 15 men will be the victim of a sexual assault before graduating college. It is for that reason that multiple GVSU organizations are working together to put on a concert to both entertain and raise awareness.

The annual concert, Rock Against Rape, will be held at the Fieldhouse Arena on Saturday, and is a collaborative effort between different university and student organizations, including Eyes Wide Open and the Women’s Center.

“Eyes Wide Open is the organization on campus that educates on sexual assault,” said Jessica Krebs, GVSU senior and vice pesident of EWO. “We give presentations, provide support and resources for victims and survivors and put on or co-sponsor events such as Rock Against Rape.”

tion sponsors and organizes include Take Back the Night, the Clothesline Project and the Sexual Assault Awareness Week, starting Monday.

The Rock Against Rape concert will feature two live bands, a slam poet and a performance by the student group ReAct. “I am really looking forward to seeing the bands Believe You Me and Sargent Avenue,” Krebs said. “I have listened to a lot of their work online and they are going to put on a really good show.”

ReAct is a theater group comprised of GVSU students that perform short skits in order to prevent and inform about instances of domestic violence and sexual assault.

“I am most excited to see ReAct,” said Jordan Cross, GVSU senior and President of Eyes Wide Open. “They are an excellent group of students who put together skits based on sexual assault experiences.”

Krebs agreed that this topic may be difficult to speak about, but raising awareness is paramount.

“It is an incredibly important topic, especially since people generally don’t like to

talk about this form of violence because it makes them uncomfortable,” Krebs said.

The event is free and open to the public but donations of toiletries such as toothpaste and deodorant are both welcome and encouraged. Free refreshments will be available and t-shirts will be sold.

All donations and revenue from shirts will go directly to the organization Women in Transition in Holland and the YWCA in Grand Rapids.

This concert is the unofficial kick-off of the Sexual Assault Awareness Week.

This week of learning and prevention will include multiple events including two nationally-recognized speakers.

“The mission of Rock Against Rape is to raise awareness of the reality of sexual assault on the GVSU campus in a non-traditional atmosphere,” Cross said. “While sexual assault is never a light issue, the goal of RAR is to create awareness through music, fun and solidarity.”
