Amy McNeel Amy, Your time with the Lanthorn has been one of tremendous growth and dedication. Moving from a columnist position into Laker Life demonstrated your desire to work in a newsroom, including learning many of the skills that some of your peers were taught in a classroom. You, however, took a journalistic leadership position in stride. Beyond being a leader yourself in that section, you were a leader in our GVSU community, writing pieces that held people to task and sparked change. As an associate editor this year, there were late nights of editing, leading our team and helping the Lanthorn continue to keep our journalism at a high caliber. While your wit, candor and cheerfulness will be missed, but it will be cherished in any environment your future takes you to.

Brianne Kerr Brianne, It is a huge undertaking entering the Lanthorn as an associate editor without any prior newsroom experience, but you made it look graceful. With a website that was new to all of us and various learning curves to digital content, the position was far more demanding than we could have expected, but despite this, you confronted the challenges head-on. Regarding content, your work bounced between provocative and entertaining, which is a difficult balance to attain, but shows your experience and passion for writing. Beyond that, you became someone the newsroom could rely on and confide in.

This speaks volumes about you as a person. We know this was your first soiree into a newsroom, but with any luck, we hope we’ve inspired you to continue to create — and if a newsroom is lucky, they’ll find you in it.

Sean Cauvet Sean, Your contribution to the Lanthorn has been long standing, both as a news reporter and sports reporter. Your heart has always been in sports, so I knew when you had the chance to expand your reach into our other sections, it would be telling of your skill as a journalist. In that, you far exceeded any expectations.

You demonstrated prowess as a jack of all trades journalist, showcasing your mastery of our craft. We tested you further, tacking on a leadership position to your responsibilities in the news section. Each time we continued to give you opportunities to show your talent, you did so with shining colors. In doing so, you brought a spark to the newsroom with your sense of humor, personableness and leadership. You’ve grown a lot as a journalist and a person from our perspective, and we hope you never stop pushing yourself to continue to do so.

Benjamin Hunt Ben, When we first saw your work stand out, you followed a smattering of college students mourn the loss of their dear friend Mully’s to produce a memorable photo accompaniment to a historic story. We knew you’d be a welcome member to our team as a leader, and we were right. You bring with you such a rich pool of experience and personality that make you an inspiring leader. Your team looked up to you, and that allowed them to grow as a unit and allowed our photos to shine. Around the newsroom, you were a team player — a quality that is sought after by every employer. As you step into the scary reality of “the real world,” we trust that you will continue to keep your sense of humor and your ability to work with people. You’ll go far with a camera in your hands and a team by your side.

Eli Ong Eli, Out of all of the graduating members of the Lanthorn this year, you probably have the most impressive tenure. Your time with the Lanthorn shows not only a demonstrated passion for the world of sports reporting, but journalism as a whole. A strong sports journalist is able to take a simple game recap and capture the powerful struggle both teams face on the field, court or otherwise.

Beyond that, you have a strong skill for being able to put readers in the place of athletes with inspiring stories. Each and every profile you write gives so much depth to players who deserve it.

You bring them off the field and put them in the stands with fans, and that is an incredible trait to have perfected so early on. We wish you the best as you further your education across the lake, but hope you stay true to your Laker roots.

Jane Johnston Jane, If we were to have any regrets this year, it would be that our newspaper didn’t add you to the team quick enough.

A classmate said that you embody the journalism program here at GVSU with your mastery of the craft, dedication to storytelling and ambitious leadership. As an intern with us, you certainly held that reputation to be true. You are a passionate journalist and storyteller, which we can only imagine comes in part due to your inviting personality that makes people want to share their lives with you. On the flipside, you know how to ask difficult questions and cut into the core of a story, which shows that you take your work seriously. When we needed it, we could rely on you to handle all sorts of coverage, and you did so with grace. You’ve set a high bar for journalism students and Lanthorn interns to come, and for that, we’re very grateful.

Lucas Swartzendruber Lucas, The pool of news reporters we have is deep, rich and diverse, with each member being able to especially tackle a specific type of news coverage.

You, on the other hand, were dependable and talented, being able to flexibly approach any assignment given to you. Your attention to detail feeds hungry readers and goads the picky into asking questions, like good journalism should. From local government to small-scale events, your perception and strong writing breathes life into your stories. Continue to maintain your professionalism and we are confident that you will continue to make big strides into the professional world.
