DEAR GRAND

THEATRE LOVER

We’ve been on some great theatrical adventures together over the last three years, haven’t we? From the breath-taking physicality of Blam! to the power and challenge of DV8's John and the artistic precision of Hofesh Schechter’s Sun; it has been a pleasure to share my passion for some of the world’s best artists with you. And this summer will be no exception. The Grand Theatre has teamed up with LeftCoast to bring you an extraordinary theatrical experience – ABSENT

created especially for Blackpool by internationally renowned artist, Tristan Sharps of dreamthinkspeak. ABSENT is a site-specific production. That means it has been created to respond to a particular location - Blackpool’s spectacular Grade II* listed Winter Gardens. Why the Winter Gardens? Well, because there is no better space in which to house the considerable physical and technical requirements of the show. ABSENT uses unique and beautiful elements of the building, not normally accessible to the general public, to create a whole new world, where ticket-holders step into and are, literally, surrounded by the fantasy. The fantasy, in this case, is the Winter Gardens Hotel.

Small groups of no more than four people at a time walk into and through the installation (or set) and encounter life-sized hotel rooms, film, performers, scale models, photographs and a special soundtrack that, together, build a picture of a changing world. The journey constantly flips between the faded glamour of the 1950s, when the hotel was at its height, and the modernisation of the present day, as it gets a much-needed makeover. Take your time. It takes about an hour to experience ABSENT but, believe me, its haunting beauty will live with you forever. Once again, I invite you to be part of a new artistic adventure. She persuades him to abandon his dahlias and travel with her to Brighton, Paris, Istanbul and across the world to Paraguay. Through Aunt Augusta, a veteran of hotel bedrooms and shady associates, Henry joins a shifty twilight society of pot smoking hippies, war criminals, men from the CIA and hard core art smugglers. Nobody's Perfect

TUES 4 to SAT 8 OCT

by Simon Williams

‘Love Is All Around’ is the name of a feminist publishing house where Harriet Copeland is running a competition to find new romantic fiction written by women only. Leonard Loftus is trying to get his books published, but Harriet keeps sending his manuscripts back because they are the work of a man. When Leonard finally sends a manuscript based on his experience as a single parent, and uses the female pseudonym "Myrtle Banbury", Harriet is impressed. She finds the writing superb and insists on meeting Myrtle so she can hand over the prize money and get Myrtle's signature on a contract. In order to collect the money, Leonard is forced to carry on the pretence that "Myrtle" exists, by dressing up as a woman and pretending that he is his own fictitious aunt. Leonard's teenage daughter, Dee Dee, and his father, Gus, play along with the deception with hilarious consequences. Cast includes Stephen Beckett (The Bill, Coronation Street) and Leah Bracknell (Emmerdale). @talkingScarlet

DRAMA Touring Consortium Theatre Company and Royal & Derngate Northampton presents

A Tale of Two Cities

TUES 11 to SAT 15 OCT

Evenings 7:30pm, Thurs and Sat Matinees 2pm

By Charles Dickens, Adapted by Mike Poulton

'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity...' Dickens considered his novel, A Tale of Two Cities the best story he had ever written. Interweaving one family’s intensely personal drama with the terror and chaos of the French Revolution, it is an epic story of love, sacrifice and redemption amidst horrific violence and world changing events. In an era of regime changes and citizen protest around the world, this bold new dramatic adaptation by Mike Poulton (Fortune’s Fool, Old Vic; Wolf Hall) set to rousing original music by Oscar-winning composer Rachel Portman (The Cider House Rules, Beloved) seems more relevant than ever. Directed by James Dacre ‘A lean punchy adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic tale of revolutionary France.’ THE DAILY TELEGRAPH Audio Described Friday 14 October 7:30pm POST SHOW

Creative Programmes for schools, young people and our local community Here at The Grand we do much more than just put shows on our stages. Across Blackpool and the Fylde Coast we offer high quality arts and education events, supporting the talent development of artists and young people. This could be in the guise of workshops or masterclasses provided by the professional artists who visit us; or bespoke programmes of work created to extend opportunities for young people to participate in or influence their cultural offer. Teachers, school children, young people, plus amateur and professional artists of all ages work together with The Grand to create extraordinary and memorable learning experiences. We are partners in three national programmes: the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Learning and Performance Network; Sadler’s Wells Breakin’ Convention dance programme; and National Theatre Connections. In addition, with special support from Curious Minds through Blackpool Council, the Youth Arts Programme happens in parks, libraries, galleries and youth centres to reach those young people who might not normally be able to enjoy or be involved in the arts.

DANCE

James Wilton Presents Leviathan

In 2013 James Wilton was commissioned to choreograph a work for 50 professional dancers for performance at the opening and semifinal ceremonies of the Rugby League World Cup. It was seen by over 110,000 people. His most recent work Last Man Standing toured to over 60 venues since its creation in 2014 and has been seen by over 15,000 people. Wilton’s new piece Leviathan follows Ahab, a ship captain hell-bent on capturing the white whale: Moby Dick, a beast as vast and dangerous as the sea itself, yet serene and beautiful beyond all imagining. Ahab’s crew is drawn into the unhinged charisma of their captain, blindly following him on his perilous adventure towards almost certain destruction. Multi-award winning choreographer James Wilton re-imagines Herman Melville’s seminal novel, Moby Dick. Featuring a cast of 7, Wilton’s trademark blend of athletic dance, martial arts, capoeira and partnerwork, Leviathan will have you on the edge of your seat. It will leave you gasping for air under the sheer ferocity of movement, all accompanied by a powerful electro-rock soundtrack by Lunatic Soul. CURTAIN RAISER As part of the Grand’s ongoing commitment to artist development a new curtain raiser is to be performed by Edge Hill University dance students.

Tickets £18.50 to £35.50

AIDA, the grandest of all Ellen Kent’s operas, returns in Autumn 2016 to the UK with a stunning new traditional production, boasting an impressive new set built by Set-Up Scenery, who also build sets for the Royal Opera Covent Garden.

In AIDA, the splendour of Egypt is set against the grandeur of the Coliseum of Rome with Ellen Kent’s direction influenced by the ancient Greek dramas of Euripides and symbolising the powerful religious hold of the priests of Egypt. This tragic story of war, jealousy and revenge at whose heart is the doomed love of the beautiful Ethiopian slave girl, Aida, and the Egyptian hero, Radames, is brought to life in a production set against one of the greatest pieces of music Verdi ever wrote with the well-known arias “Celeste Aida”, “Ritorna Vincitor” and the classic “Triumphal March” featuring a temple dance, cascades of glittering gold and amazing fire performers. With international soloists, highly-praised chorus and full orchestra

GRAND ACCESSIBILITY

I would just like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped make a positive experience for me and my friend who are both visually impaired. You were great from booking the tickets and explaining the seating and Audio Description. Taking care of the little things that people with visual impairments would worry about when going to a show e.g. finding your seat, getting a drink, finding the toilets etc. I have not been to an Audio Described show since I was a child and it has been great to watch a show without a friend or a family member having to explain what is going on. After this experience I now feel confident to take my niece to a show by myself because you have been so helpful. Audience member 48

Our aim is to make your visit as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. Do advise the box office when booking your seats of any individual requirements you may have - we’re here to help. The correct seating position is essential so please book through our box office on 01253 290190, and they will guide you through the process. ASSISTANCE DOGS Recognised Assistance Dogs are welcome. A “Recognised Assistance Dog” is one which has been specifically trained to assist a disabled person and that has been qualified by one of the charitable organisations registered as members of Assistance Dogs UK. Assistance Dogs trained by members of Assistance Dogs UK will have formal identification and have been endorsed by the Department of Health, on the basis that the dog’s high standards of training, behaviour, health and welfare are such that it should be permitted to accompany its client, owner, or partner, at all times and in all places. DISABLED If you are disabled and cannot attend the theatre without a companion we will offer a guest ticket for your companion to sit with you.

BSL INTERPRETED PERFORMANCES Our BSL Interpreted performances feature an on-stage interpreter who converts the words into British Sign Language. BSL has a unique structure and syntax and the interpreter will spend several weeks learning a script before performing their translation. TOUCH TOURS Before an Audio Described performance, we are sometimes able to offer Touch Tours to help you immerse yourself in the show (subject to visiting company approval) enabling you to explore the stage and get a feel of the set. Please ask about availability when booking your ticket for an Audio Described performance. WHEELCHAIR ACCESS As part of recent development work we have installed a lift to take wheelchairs from the foyer to the stalls. This was generously funded by SITA Trust. Please advise Box Office when booking your ticket that you require a wheelchair space. Lift access is no longer available to the dress circle.

AUDIO DESCRIPTION If you are blind or partially sighted, we don’t want you to miss out on anything that happens in the show. Our Audio Described performances give you a live commentary about the action happening on stage through a pair of headphones. Like a narrator telling a story, a trained describer will tell you about the things you might not be able to see, describing body language, expressions and movements, so that you can keep up with the action. There is a live introduction, which will tell you about the characters, their costumes and the appearance of the set 15 minutes before the start of the show.

Spanning the 60s, 70s and 80s, this incredible production not only tells the intriguing story of Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibb – songwriters, singers and musicians extraordinaire – it is also a wonderful, all-live production that brings The Bee Gees superb songs to life.

Steve Steinman has ramped up the vamp in this spectacular sequel to the phenomenally successful Vampires Rock Musical Concert. FORWARD

At the Grand Theatre we are passionate about achieving our vision to be ‘the theatre of choice for the people of Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre’ and we’ve been working hard to ensure that more and more locals get to see, enjoy and participate in what we have to offer. The new facilities that came on-line this year have allowed us to broaden our programme, introducing smaller productions in the newlyrefurbished studio; offering more and better rehearsal space to local performers; and giving new opportunities for young people to participate in theatre. We’ve also created a new department, called Learning and Development, which is dedicated to working with schools and young people across the district. We’ve been able to do 60

this thanks to extra support from Arts Council England, the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, Blackpool Council through the Cultural Hub and numerous generous individuals and funders. However, this additional support only amounts to 7% of our income and by far the most important source of support for the theatre comes from you, our customers. This year 30,000 more of you have come to see a show at the Grand than last year with more than 70% of our audience coming from FY and PR postcodes. We really are a local resource. As a registered charity, it’s our duty to demonstrate ‘public benefit’. So what does this mean to the local people we serve? We could tell you that the annual economic impact of the theatre on the town amounts to £9.3m. Or, we could describe learning experiences we’ve created for the thousands of school children who have worked with the theatre over the year. Or we could explain the mutual benefits that we and the 78-strong volunteer force, without whom the theatre wouldn’t be able to function, share. But, you know what? For all the economic, educational and social benefits we could list, these aren’t the reasons we do what we do. The real reason that everyone at the Grand Theatre is passionate about what we do is because we know that theatre has amazing, transformative powers – it can make people think, talk, laugh and cry. It's a special way of bringing people together to share

unique and magical experiences. And, generally, makes life better. We are fortunate enough to ply our trade in one of England’s most beautiful heritage theatres. Designed by Frank Matcham and opened in 1894, The Grand has seen good and bad times in its long history. The good times saw stars such as Lily Langtree, Arthur Askey and Rex Harrison performing on its stage. The bad times saw the theatre nearly demolished to make way for a Littlewoods store. Saved by a small group of passionate locals The Grand has been running in its current guise since 1981 and, once again, we find ourselves in challenging times. Nationally, local authorities are under huge financial pressure and Blackpool is no different. The arts are more and more marginalised within the National Curriculum. And, money is tight for everyone in these austere times. However, fortunately, as the statistics show, the last financial year was a good one for The Grand, we have grown our business and are now offering more and different opportunities to a wider audience of all ages to see, enjoy and participate in what we have to offer. Thank you to all our supporters. We couldn’t do it without you. Ruth Eastwood, Chief Executive
