Fondés par Ludmilla Chiriaeff en 1957, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal transmettent la passion de la danse et stimulent l’imaginaire collectif. Cette compagnie se consacre au développement du ballet sous toutes ses formes, en s’appuyant sur les fondements de la technique classique.

Les Grands Ballets rayonnent sur les scènes du monde entier, particulièrement depuis la nomination de Gradimir Pankov à la direction artistique en 1999. Les succès remportés ces dernières années à travers le monde en témoignent : Oman (2012), Chine (2011), Moyen-Orient (2009), Amérique du Nord et Europe (Madrid, Berlin, Munich et une participation de trois semaines au Festival des Étés de la danse à Paris, entre autres). Chef de file du milieu culturel montréalais, la compagnie se distingue aujourd’hui en présentant des œuvres d’artistes de la relève (Christian Spuck, Stephan Thoss, Stijn Celis, Didy Veldman) et de grands chorégraphes comme Jirí Kylián, Mats Ek ou encore Ohad Naharin.

Les Grands Ballets s’engagent également auprès de la communauté. C’est ainsi que, depuis 1997, le Fonds Casse-Noisette pour enfants rend le temps des Fêtes inoubliable pour des milliers d’enfants issus de milieux défavorisés en leur permettant de participer à des ateliers éducatifs et d’assister à une représentation du célèbre ballet Casse-Noisette. Le Marché Casse-Noisette, premier marché de Noël philanthropique de Montréal, créé en 2010, contribue spécifiquement à ce Fonds.

Les Grands Ballets nourrissent d’autres projets ambitieux, notamment ceux du Centre national de danse-thérapie, lancé en 2013. La compagnie emménagera par ailleurs dans l’Espace Danse en 2016, en plein cœur du Quartier des spectacles à Montréal, lieu unique de création et de convergence.

Toutes ces initiatives sont dictées par une conviction : Faire bouger le monde. Autrement.

Ever since Ludmilla Chiriaeff founded the company in 1957, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal has been communicating its passion for dance and firing the imagination of audiences worldwide.

This widely acclaimed company is devoted to developing ballet in all its forms, while remaining faithful to the spirit of classical ballet.

Les Grands Ballets has lit up stages around the world, particularly since the appointment of Gradimir Pankov as Artistic Director in 1999. The company’s reputation has been reinforced by many international successes over the past few years: Oman (2012), China (2011), the Middle East (2009), North America and Europe (Madrid, Berlin, Munich and three weeks at Les Étés de la danse in Paris).

A leader among Montreal’s cultural institutions, the company now presents works by up-and-coming artists—Christian Spuck, Stephan Thoss, Stijn Celis, Didy Veldman—and renowned choreographers such as Jirí Kylián, Mats Ek and Ohad Naharin.

The company is also strongly commitmed to the local community. Since 1997, The Nutcracker Fund for Children has given thousands of children from disadvantaged communities an unforgettable holiday season, with educational workshops and a free performance of The Nutcracker. In 2010, Les Grands Ballets launched The Nutcracker Market—Montreal’s first non-profit Christmas market—to raise money for the Fund.

Les Grands Ballets is currently preparing a number of large-scale projects, in particular those for the National Centre for Dance Therapy, launched in 2013. The company will also be relocating in 2016 to its new premises, the Espace Danse, in the heart of Montreal’s Quartier des spectacles, a unique creative crossroads.

All of these initiatives have one goal: to move the world. Differently.

L’heure est à la fête : toute la famille est réunie pour célébrer le réveillon de Noël. Alors que les cadeaux sont distribués aux enfants, le mystérieux Docteur Drosselmeyer offre à sa nièce, Clara, un beau casse-noisette. La nuit venue, tandis que Clara est assoupie aux côtés de son jouet, des souris et des rats envahissent la pièce pour livrer bataille à une armée de soldats de plomb. Le casse-noisette de la petite fille se transforme en beau prince qui lui ouvre les portes d’un monde magique et enchanteur.

Clara’s nutcracker transforms into a handsome prince and leads her into a magical and enchanting fairy-tale world.

Le plus classique des ballets français Franz, un jeune villageois, tombe fou amoureux de la belle Coppélia, aperçue dans l’atelier de l’étrange Dr.

fiancée,

Swanhilde, part à la recherche de cette femme mystérieuse et pénètre l’atelier secret. Celui-ci révèlera bientôt ses mystères…

Coppélia reçut un accueil triomphal lors de sa présentation à Paris, il y a plus d’un siècle. Le succès ne s’est jamais démenti.

Le chorégraphe français Pierre Lacotte inscrit cette adaptation de la nouvelle d’Hoffman dans une vision résolument classique : pantomime, mazurkas et danses de caractère rythment ce ballet frais et humoristique.

Accompagnée de la superbe composition de Léo Delibes, cette pièce sera interprétée par le Shanghai Ballet, présent pour la toute première fois à Montréal.

Célèbre pour la beauté et la délicatesse de ses ballerines, la jeune compagnie chinoise déploie, dans ce grand classique du ballet français, toute la force de son vocabulaire technique !

The most classical French ballet Franz, a young man from a Polish village, falls madly in love with Coppélia, a young beauty he has seen in Dr. Coppelius’ workshop. Furious and jealous, his fiancée—Swanhilde—sets off to meet this mystery woman and breaks into the secret workshop, a place of mysteries and enchantment.

Coppélia was an outstanding success upon its first presentation in Paris, nearly a century ago, and it has been met with unfailing enthusiasm ever since.

Acclaimed French choreographer Pierre Lacotte, makes his adaptation of Hoffman’s tale as classic as can be: pantomime, mazurkas and character dancing set the pace for this fresh and humorous ballet. Set to Leo Delibes’ beautiful score, this work will be presented by the Shanghai Ballet, which will be performing in Montreal for the very first time. Famous for the beauty and the grace of its ballerinas, this young Chinese company unveils all its technical strength in one of the most classical French ballets of all time!

PRÉLUDES Programme double La Lueur de l’Aube se veut un hommage en mouvement au génie de Sergei Rachmaninoff. Le talentueux chorégraphe suisse Ken Ossola nous entraîne ici dans la psyché du célèbre compositeur et pianiste russe, y puisant une contemplation sur l’ombre et la lumière qui nous habitent tous. Une création lyrique et romantique, toute en émotion.

RE-(II) est une invitation au voyage. Le chorégraphe américain Shen Wei déploie les souvenirs de sa découverte du Temple d’Angkor Wat, au Cambodge. Bercé par de la musique traditionnelle cambodgienne, ce ballet reflète la nature, les sons et la culture de ce lieu millénaire.

PRÉLUDES Double bill Dim Light of Dawn is a tribute to the genius that was Sergei Rachmaninoff. Talented Swiss choreographer Ken Ossola leads us into the mind of the famous Russian composer and pianist, exploring the light and darkness that inhabit us all. It is a lyrical and romantic new work full of emotion.

Espagne, 17e siècle. Don Quixote de la Mancha rêve à son illusoire amour, Dulcinea. Enthousiasmé par la lecture de multiples ouvrages romantiques, il décide de partir à la recherche de sa belle. Accompagné de son fidèle serviteur Sancho Panza, il parcourt l’Espagne, allant d’aventure en aventure, bravant de nombreux dangers et subissant sans cesse les conséquences de sa propre candeur.

Adapté du grand classique écrit par Miguel de Cervantes en 1605, Don Quixote est une véritable explosion de couleurs et d’énergie. Créé par la monumentale Alicia Alonso en 1998, ce ballet est souligné par la musique de Léon Minkus. Présentée par le Ballet Nacional de Cuba, cette pièce révèle toute la virtuosité de cette compagnie acclamée mondialement.

Et si votre vie s’articulait autour des nuits et non des jours?

Un couple vit une vie tourmentée. Elle est hantée par des rêves qu’elle relate dans un livret. Lui ne semble pas affecté par ces troubles mais la met en garde contre le pouvoir de l’imagination. Nuit après nuit, les songes prennent vie, inlassables.

Stephan Thoss ouvre les portes du dédale de l’inconscient. Créé autour d’un enchaînement de tableaux et de projections renvoyant au cinéma surréaliste, ce ballet onirique alterne entre scènes d’une beauté inquiétante et moments d’action haletants.

What if your life really was about the nights?

A couple lives a tormented life. The woman is haunted by dreams; he is free from any such troubles but warns her against the power of imagination. Night after night, her visions tirelessly come to life.

Stephan Thoss opens the doors to the world of the unconscious, portraying a series of dreams throughout this breathtaking and high-paced ballet. Articulated around a multitude of tableaux and projections reminiscent of surrealist cinema, this dreamlike ballet alternates between eerily beautiful scenes and fastpaced action.

FONDS CASSE-NOISETTE POUR ENFANTS Programme permettant à des enfants issus de milieux défavorisés d’assister gratuitement à une représentation de Casse-Noisette et de participer à des ateliers éducatifs. Soutenez la cause en participant au Brunch-bénéfice dimanche le 13 décembre 2015 ou en faisant un don!

MARCHÉ CASSE-NOISETTE Marché de Noël à caractère philanthropique qui offre aux visiteurs de s’unir à une bonne cause : le Fonds Casse-Noisette. Mille idées-cadeaux sous un même toit!

Du 26 novembre au 6 décembre 2015 au Palais des congrès.

JEUNES GOUVERNEURS Cocktails de réseautage, classes de ballet et soirée festive : différentes activités organisées par un comité de jeunes professionnels soucieux de sensibiliser une nouvelle génération à la philanthropie et de créer des opportunités de réseautage, tout en démocratisant le ballet.

MINUTES DE CRÉATION Devenez « actionnaire » d’une production des Grands Ballets en achetant une minute de La lueur de l’aube. L’opportunité de côtoyer de près les danseurs et les artistes, de vivre les coulisses d’une création et de bénéficier d’événements exclusifs.

GALA ANNUEL Événement-bénéfice majeur organisé chaque printemps au Stade Uniprix, le gala offre à ses prestigieux invités une soirée dansante aux côtés des danseurs de la compagnie, un extrait de spectacle des Grands Ballets, un souper gastronomique ainsi que le tirage de nombreux prix.

TOURNÉES Chaque don dédié aux tournées sera doublé grâce au programme Mécénat Placements Culture du Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec!

NUTCRACKER FUND FOR CHILDREN A program allowing children from disadvantaged communities to attend a free performance of The Nutcracker and to take part in educational workshops. Help support the cause by attending the Benefit Brunch on Sunday December 13, 2015 or by making a donation!

NUTCRACKER MARKET A philanthropic Christmas Market that offers visitors the opportunity to rally round a good cause: the Nutcracker Fund. A thousand and one gift ideas under one roof! From November 26 to December 6, 2015 at the Palais des congrès.

JEUNES GOUVERNEURS Networking cocktails, ballet classes and a festive evening: a variety of activities organized by a committee of young professionals devoted to educating a new generation about philanthropy, and to creating networking opportunities, widening access to ballet in the process.

MINUTES OF CREATION Become a “shareholder” of a performance by Les Grands Ballets by purchasing a minute of Dim Light of Dawn. An ideal opportunity to meet the dancers and artists, the opportunity to go behind the scenes of a creation and to benefit from exclusive events.

ANNUAL GALA A major fundraising event organized every spring at Uniprix Stadium, the Gala offers its prestigious guests an evening of dancing alongside the troupe’s dancers, an excerpt from a Les Grands Ballets production, a gourmet dinner, and a draw for numerous prizes.

Major Fundraising Campaign One Address, the Best of Dance.

En 2016, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal, Tangente, l’École de danse contemporaine de Montréal et l’Agora de la Danse déménageront en plein cœur du Quartier des spectacles. Une nouvelle maison de la danse va être construite pour doter les quatre organismes d’infrastructures adaptées aux normes internationales en danse, renforçant ainsi le positionnement de Montréal et du Québec à titre de leader mondial de création et d’innovation dans le domaine.

In 2016, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal, Tangente, the École de danse contemporaine de Montréal and Agora de la Danse will be moving into the heart of the Quartier des spectacles. A new building, with facilities that meet the highest international standards in dance, will be constructed for the four organizations, strengthening the position of Montreal and Quebec as world leaders in dance creation and innovation.
