NOTRE MISSION Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal sont une compagnie de création, de production et de diffusion de réputation internationale qui se consacre au développement du ballet sous toutes ses formes, en s’appuyant sur la discipline du ballet classique. CONSEIL D’ADMINISTRATION DES GRANDS BALLETS UNE VISION À LONG TERME La saison 2014-2015 compte parmi les plus audacieuses que la compagnie ait connues à ce jour. Elle s’annonçait prometteuse, avec une programmation exceptionnelle. Elle a dépassé toutes les attentes : des événements couronnés de succès et une fréquentation record !

Jamais la compagnie n’aura vécu autant de réussites à tous les niveaux.

En plus des spectacles superbes qu’elle a présentés à son public, elle a réussi, cette année plus que jamais, à accroitre sa notoriété internationale.

La compagnie investira de nouveaux lieux en 2017, au cœur du Quartier des spectacles de Montréal. Il a été annoncé que la respectée femme d’affaires Danièle Henkel prendrait la tête de la campagne de dons majeurs de l’Édifice Wilder : Espace Danse. Ce nouvel environnement exceptionnel comprendra entre autres, sept studios de danse, un studio de production, un atrium et des aires de restauration.

Les Grands Ballets ont annoncé le départ de Gradimir Pankov. Reconnu comme l’un des plus grands directeurs artistiques de sa génération, M. Pankov a renforcé la réputation internationale de la compagnie montréalaise et a été un porte-parole de la culture canadienne aux quatre coins du monde.

Excellence artistique, rayonnement international, éducation et formation, innovation sociale et créativité ; Les Grands Ballets continuent leur ascension dictée par une conviction : Faire bouger le monde. Autrement.

A WORD FROM THE

PRESIDENT OF LES GRANDS BALLETS’ BOARD OF DIRECTORS A LONG-TERM VISION The 2014–2015 season was one of the company’s boldest to date. While it looked promising even at the outset, thanks in part to an exceptional lineup of productions, it ultimately surpassed all our expectations with highly successful events and record audiences!

Indeed, the company has never met with such resounding success on every front. In addition to breathtaking shows that delighted audiences, this year saw the troupe’s international profile rise to new heights. The company will move into its new premises in the heart of Montreal’s Quartier des spectacles in 2017. It was also announced that reputed businesswoman Danièle Henkel would take the reins of the Wilder Building: Espace Danse major gifts campaign. Among other facilities, the organization’s new home will house four new dance studios, a production studio, an atrium and a food court.

In other news, the company announced the retirement of Gradimir Pankov. Widely acknowledged as one of the greatest artistic directors of his generation, Mr. Pankov enhanced the troupe’s international reputation and made it a showcase for Canadian culture worldwide.

Whether its focus is its artistic excellence, international visibility, education and training programs, social innovation or creativity, Les Grands Ballets continues to soar, supporting its chief goal: to move the world, differently.

EXCELLENCE ARTISTIQUE Grâce au talent exceptionnel de leurs danseurs et artistes, Les Grands Ballets réussissent à présenter, spectacle après spectacle, des œuvres d’une qualité digne des plus importantes compagnies au monde.

Le retour de figures marquantes de la danse

Pour la saison 2014-2015, Les Grands Ballets ont invité de grandes figures de la danse à revenir sur la scène québécoise, avec, en ouverture, Christian Spuck, qui présentait de nouveau sa pièce ludique et théâtrale, Léonce et Léna. Le populaire et éclectique Petit Prince de Didy Veldman, créé pour Les Grands Ballets en 2012, était également de retour au grand bonheur du public montréalais. Enfin, Stephan Thoss créait La Jeune Fille et la Mort sur mesure pour les danseurs des Grands Ballets en clôture de saison ; une œuvre poignante qui n’a laissé aucun spectateur indifférent. « Aussi simple que cela puisse paraître, la vie ne nous offre la chance de vivre sans angoisses que si nous voyons la mort comme totalement intégrée à la vie et non comme quelque chose d’éloigné, tache funeste, sombre et noire au terme de la vie. Il importe peu à la mort que nous en ayons peur ou non. Mon nouveau ballet quant à lui dit “oui” aux deux. Or le moment n’est pas venu de mourir, mais plutôt de vivre passionnément, d’aimer et de danser, tantôt avec elle, tantôt sans elle. » — Stephan Thoss à propos de La Jeune Fille et la Mort

ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE Drawing on the exceptional talent of its dancers and artists, Les Grands Ballets is able to present works worthy of the world’s top ballet companies, show after show.

Notable figures from the world of dance

For the 2014–2015 season, Les Grands Ballets invited some of the greatest names from the world of dance back to Quebec, starting with Christian Spuck, who reprised his playful, theatrical piece Leonce & Lena. Didy Veldman’s popular and eclectic The Little Prince, created for Les Grands Ballets in 2012, was also back, to the delight of Montreal audiences. Finally, the season closed with Death and the Maiden, created specifically for Les Grands Ballets’ dancers by Stephan Thoss.

The poignant work left no spectators unmoved.

“As simple as it may seem, life can only be lived without anxiety if we see death as an integral part of life and not as something distant, a dark and gloomy stain at the end of life. Our fear or lack thereof is of no importance to death. My new ballet says “yes” to both. The time has not come to die, but instead to live passionately, to love and to dance, with or without death.”

L’ORCHESTRE DES GRANDS BALLETS Cette formation, composée de solistes de haut niveau et dirigée par les chefs Allan Lewis et Florian Ziemen, est engagée depuis plus de 30 ans dans le succès des Grands Ballets. Fort à présent de plus de 70 musiciens parmi les meilleurs de Montréal, l’Orchestre a accompagné trois des productions de la saison 2014-2015.

Ce dialogue vivant entre virtuoses de la danse et de la musique a donné lieu à des prestations des plus stimulantes pour le public pendant les représentations de Léonce & Léna, de Paquita et de Casse-Noisette.

LES GRANDS BALLETS ORCHESTRA Our orchestra, featuring superior soloists and conducted by Allan Lewis and Florian Ziemen, has been playing a major role in the success of Les Grands Ballets for more than 30 years. Currently comprising over 70 musicians, including some of the finest in Montreal, the Orchestra accompanied three productions during the 2014-2015 season.

The constant dialogue between dance artists and musicians resulted in highly stimulating performances for the audiences of Leonce & Lena, Paquita and The Nutcracker.

TRADITION ET FÉERIE AVEC CASSE-NOISETTE Casse-Noisette était de retour pour la 51e année. Enchantement et féerie étaient encore une fois au rendez-vous pour petits et grands. Casse-Noisette, c’est le spectacle ayant tenu le plus longtemps l’affiche dans une même salle dans tout le Canada. Plus de 2 000 000 de spectateurs ont assisté à cette version depuis 1964!

En 2014, les fans Facebook des Grands Ballets ont particulièrement apprécié le calendrier de l’Avent de Casse-Noisette. Dès le 1er décembre, le casse-noisette en bois des Grands Ballets apparaissait, chaque jour, dans une nouvelle aventure typiquement montréalaise, dans un lieu patrimonial ou avec une personne marquante de la ville. Ce projet a obtenu un franc succès et un nombre record de « j’aime » a été récolté sur nos réseaux sociaux pour plusieurs de ces photos, toutes plus originales les unes que les autres.

TRADITION AND WONDER WITH THE NUTCRACKER Our time-honoured The Nutcracker was back for a 51st year, once again serving up plenty of wonder and enchantment. The Nutcracker holds the record for Canada’s longest-running show in the same venue, with over 2,000,000 spectators having enjoyed this version of the holiday classic since 1964!

In 2014, Les Grands Ballets’ Facebook fans showed their appreciation for the Nutcracker’s advent calendar.

Starting on December 1, Les Grands Ballets’ wooden nutcracker appeared every day in a typically Montreal adventure, at a historic location or with a local celebrity. This project was a great success and many of its original photographs received a record number of ‘likes’ on social media platforms.

LES GRANDS BALLETS SUR LA SCÈNE MADRILÈNE Février 2015 marquait le retour de la compagnie sur les planches de la capitale espagnole.

Venus présenter La Belle au bois dormant de Mats Ek, les danseurs ont impressionné le public madrilène par leur force technique et leur présence théâtrale.

El Pais note : « La compagnie canadienne se montre parfaitement à la hauteur des exigences formelles d’un type de ballet contemporain qui se doit d’être virtuose, expansif et d’un style très particulier. Les solistes offrent par ailleurs aux personnages toute une palette de nuances d’émotions, de l’humour à la douleur, et ce, avec maturité et qualité. »

LES GRANDS BALLETS IN MADRID In February 2015, the company graced the stage of the Spanish capital. Presenting Mats Ek’s Sleeping Beauty, the dancers impressed Madrid audiences with their technical strength and theatrical presence.

El Pais said: “The Canadian company has proven it is perfectly adapted to the formal requirements of this type of contemporary ballet: virtuoso, expansive and of a very particular style. The soloists offer the characters a wide range of emotions, from humour to pain, and they do it with maturity and quality.”

L’EXCELLENCE DES COMPAGNIES INVITÉES PAQUITA DU BALLET DE L’OPÉRA NATIONAL DE PARIS Les Grands Ballets sont fiers d’avoir offert à leur public Paquita du Ballet de l’Opéra national de Paris en octobre 2014. Après près d’un demi-siècle d’absence, le Ballet de l’Opéra national de Paris revenait à Montréal, ce qui constitua l’événement incontournable de la rentrée 2014.

Une visite qui marque l’histoire des Grands Ballets, mais également celle du Ballet de l’Opéra national de Paris, puisque c’est à cette occasion que sa directrice de la danse, Brigitte Lefèvre, a tiré sa révérence après avoir été à la tête de la prestigieuse compagnie durant 20 ans.

La première de Paquita a été soulignée par un cocktail-bénéfice sous la présidence d’honneur de Philippe Zeller, Ambassadeur de France au Canada. Cet événement a accueilli 250 personnes et permis d’amasser 565 000 $.

OUTSTANDING GUEST COMPANIES PAQUITA BY THE PARIS OPERA BALLET In October 2014, Les Grands Ballets was immensely proud to offer Paquita, by the Paris Opera Ballet to its public. After an absence of nearly 50 years, the Paris Opera Ballet returned to Montreal for a highly anticipated event in the fall of 2014. It was a visit that left its mark not only on the history of Les Grands Ballets, but also of the Paris Opera Ballet, with the French company’s Dance Director, Brigitte Lefèvre, taking her final bow after 20 years at the helm of the prestigious company.

Paquita’s premiere was celebrated with a benefit cocktail, chaired by Philippe Zeller, Ambassador of France to Canada. This event drew 250 people and raised $565,000.

ANNA KARENINA DE L’EIFMAN BALLET En avril 2015, Les Grands Ballets accueillaient l’Eifman Ballet de Saint-Pétersbourg. Considérée comme l’une des compagnies les plus créatives de Russie, elle a présenté le grand classique littéraire Anna Karenina, devant des salles combles.

LE CENTRE NATIONAL DE DANSE-THÉRAPIE La création du Centre national de danse-thérapie (CNDT) s’inscrit dans la vision élargie des Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal de promouvoir les bienfaits de la danse en vue d’améliorer le mieux-être de l’individu. La phase d’implantation (2013-2016) comporte des projets pilotes avec de nombreux partenaires des milieux de la santé et des services sociaux. Première initiative du genre à être conçue et mise en œuvre par une compagnie culturelle, le Centre national de danse-thérapie est unique sur la scène internationale en raison de l’intégration de trois fonctions, soit l’offre de services en thérapie par la danse et le mouvement, la mise sur pied de projets de recherche clinique et le développement d’une formation canadienne en danse-thérapie.

Le CNDT a connu une très belle saison. Avec cinq nouveaux projets pilotes, celui-ci étend son expertise aux troubles alimentaires en association avec le Centre hospitalier universitaire SainteJustine, à la santé mentale avec l’Institut Philippe-Pinel de Montréal, au décrochage scolaire avec la Commission scolaire Marie-Victorin, aux ainés en association avec le Centre PERFORM de l’université Concordia et l’Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal et en intervention sociale, en partenariat avec le Centre jeunesse de Montréal.

En juillet 2015, une première cohorte de 18 femmes compléta la formation de La Voie Alternative, leur offrant l’opportunité d’obtenir leur certification de l’American Dance Therapy Association et de joindre ainsi les rangs de plus de 1 000 danse-thérapeutes à travers le monde, dont 24 au Canada.

THE NATIONAL CENTRE FOR DANCE THERAPY Part of Les Grands Ballets’ broader vision, the National Centre for Dance Therapy (NCDT) uses dance to promote the health and well-being of individuals. Its implementation phase (20132016) involves pilot projects conducted in association with various partners from the health and social services sectors. The first project of its kind to be conceived and implemented by a cultural company, the National Centre for Dance Therapy is also the only one in the world offering three interconnected services: dance/movement therapy services, clinical research, and developing a Canadian training program in dance therapy.

The NCDT enjoyed a great season. With five new pilot projects, it’s expanding its areas of focus to include eating disorders in association with the Centre hospitalier universitaire Sainte-Justine, mental health with the Institut Philippe-Pinel de Montréal, school dropout rates with the Commission scolaire Marie-Victorin, senior audiences with the Concordia University PERFORM Centre and the Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal and social intervention in association with the Centre jeunesse de Montréal.

In July 2015, a first class of 18 women completed the ‘Alternate Route’ training program. This offers them the opportunity to obtain their certification with the American Dance Therapy Association and to join the ranks of over 1,000 dance therapists around the world (including 24 in Canada).

LE FONDS CASSE-NOISETTE POUR ENFANTS Le Fonds Casse-Noisette pour enfants permet chaque année à 2 800 enfants issus de milieux défavorisés de participer à des ateliers éducatifs et d’assister à une représentation du ballet Casse-Noisette. À ce jour, plus de 24 600 enfants ont eu la chance de participer à ce programme. Le Fonds aide par ailleurs à soutenir la production du spectacle Casse-Noisette en finançant la restauration des décors et des costumes.

Le Brunch-bénéfice annuel des Grands Ballets, au profit du Fonds Casse-Noisette pour enfants, a accueilli 400 invités en 2014, reversant ainsi plus de 282 000 $ au Fonds Casse-Noisette pour enfants !

Une campagne de financement participatif a également été lancée afin de contribuer au financement du Fonds Casse-Noisette (fondscassenoisette.com). Près de 7 000 $ ont été recueillis.

THE NUTCRACKER FUND FOR CHILDREN Each year, The Nutcracker Fund for Children gives 2,800 ill or disadvantaged children a chance to take part in educational workshops and attend a performance of The Nutcracker. The Fund also helps support the production of The Nutcracker through restoration of its sets and costumes. To this day, 24,600 children have been able to take part in the program.

The annual Benefit Brunch welcomed over 400 guests in 2014, raising more than $282,000 for The Nutcracker Fund for Children.

A crowdfunding campaign was also launched to help finance The Nutcracker Fund for Children (fondscassenoisette.com). Nearly $7,000 were raised in 2014.

GLAMOROUS RED CARPET EVENTS Les Grands Ballets builds interest in its shows by organizing one-of-a-kind red carpet events to celebrate its premieres. Themes specific to each event are developed to enhance the spectator experience. The premiere of Leonce and Lena was attended by some big names from the worlds of cinema and theatre, a perfect fit for the production’s very theatrical feel. For The Nutcracker, some of the public’s most beloved stars came to enjoy the show accompanied by their families. LE GALA ANNUEL DES GRANDS BALLETS : UNE SOIRÉE ÉCLATANTE Le Gala annuel des Grands Ballets a eu lieu le 18 avril 2014 au Stade Uniprix, sous la coprésidence d’honneur de Carole Chapdelaine, première vice-présidente, Québec et Est de l’Ontario, Banque Scotia, et de Gérald R. Tremblay, Ad.E., C.M., O.Q., c.r., avocat-conseil, McCarthy Tétrault. LES MINUTES DE CRÉATION OU DEVENIR ACTIONNAIRE D’UNE ŒUVRE DES GRANDS BALLETS Les Minutes de création permettent chaque année à des amoureux du ballet de devenir actionnaires de la création de la saison en cours. En mai 2015, La Jeune fille et la Mort de Stephan Thoss était à l’honneur : plus de 12 500 $ ont été récoltés pour permettre à cette pièce bouleversante de prendre vie !

Les actionnaires ont eu la chance de rencontrer le chorégraphe et les danseurs au cours d’une répétition privée où ils ont eu droit à une présentation d’extraits de la pièce en exclusivité. Le processus créatif des costumes et décors leur a été présenté par Mélanie Ferrero, chef de l’atelier de costumes, et Stéphan Pépin, directeur de production des Grands Ballets.

Ces donateurs ont également eu droit à un cocktail dinatoire avant la première mondiale de La Jeune fille et la Mort. Un certificat attestant leur contribution de 1 000 $ la minute leur a aussi été remis lors d’une réception suivant le spectacle.

MINUTES OF CREATION, OR BECOMING A SHAREHOLDER IN A GRANDS BALLETS PRODUCTION Every year, the Minutes of Creation program enables ballet lovers to become shareholders in the company’s yearly creation. In May 2015, over $12,500 was raised to help Stephan Thoss’ Death and the Maiden come to life!

Following a private rehearsal during which they got an exclusive peak at excerpts from the work, shareholders had an opportunity to meet with the choreographer and dancers. Head of Wardrobe Mélanie Ferrero and Production Director Stéphan Pépin described the creative process behind the show’s sets and costumes. The donors were also treated to a cocktail reception prior to the world premiere of Death and the Maiden and received a certificate acknowledging their contribution of $1,000 per minute at a post-performance reception.

LA RELÈVE LES JEUNES GOUVERNEURS DES GRANDS BALLETS Fondé en 2012, le comité des Jeunes gouverneurs est composé d’une douzaine de jeunes professionnels âgés de 24 à 34 ans, désirant s’impliquer dans le mileu culturel. Leur mission est de sensibiliser une nouvelle génération à la philanthropie et de créer des occasions de réseautage, tout en démocratisant le ballet à travers des événements-bénéfices organisés conjointement avec Les Grands Ballets.

La Soirée des Jeunes gouverneurs s’est tenue le 21 mars 2015, à l’occasion d’une présentation du Petit Prince de Didy Veldman. Près de 400 jeunes professionnels ont assisté à cette soirée à la popularité grandissante et ont permis d’amasser 83 000 $ pour Les Grands Ballets. Un véritable succès et un montant total qui s’élève à 90 400 $ pour la saison 2014-2015, grâce aux différentes activités des Jeunes gouverneurs !

FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS OF BALLET ENTHUSIASTS LES JEUNES GOUVERNEURS Formed in 2012, the Jeunes gouverneurs committee is composed of about a dozen young professionals between 24 and 34 years of age who are interested in getting involved in culture. The committee’s mission is to raise the next generation’s awareness of philanthropy and create networking opportunities, all the while making ballet as accessible as possible through benefit events co-organized with Les Grands Ballets.

Les Jeunes gouverneurs’ annual benefit event was held on March 21, 2015, during a performance of Didy Veldman’s The Little Prince. Close to 400 young professionals took part in this increasingly popular event. The evening raised $83,000, making the total amount raised by Les Jeunes gouverneurs an impressive $90,400 for Les Grands Ballets’ 2014/15 season!

LE PROGRAMME « JE ME POINTE ! » Parce que Les Grands Ballets souhaitent proposer aux jeunes de 30 ans ou moins d’assister à un grand nombre de spectacles d’exception à prix réduits, ils ont lancé la carte « Je me pointe ! » en 2010. Au prix exceptionnel de 12 $, la carte permet aux jeunes de 30 ans et moins de profiter d’une réduction tarifaire de 40 % sur tous les spectacles de la compagnie. Pour la saison 2014-2015, 1 171 jeunes se sont joints à ce programme qui démocratise davantage la danse.

THE “JE ME POINTE!” PROGRAM To make it easier for people aged 30 or under to attend outstanding performances at reduced prices, Les Grands Ballets created the “Je me pointe!” card in 2010. For the exceptional price of $12, the card gives young people aged 30 and under a 40% discount on the price of all Grands Ballets tickets. Over the 2014–2015 season, 1,171 young people took advantage of the program, which makes dance accessible to a wider audience.

LA NOUVELLE MAISON DES GRANDS BALLETS En 2017, quatre organismes phares de la danse à Montréal dynamiseront la Place des Festivals.

Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal, Tangente, l’École de danse contemporaine de Montréal et l’Agora de la danse occuperont l’Édifice Wilder qui, rénové et agrandi, sera doté d’infrastructures adaptées aux normes internationales : des équipements indispensables pour renforcer le positionnement de Montréal et du Québec à titre de leader mondial de création et d’innovation en danse.

Plus qu’un lieu d’entraînement, de formation et de création, le projet Espace Danse, telle que sera désignée cette nouvelle adresse culturelle dans l’Édifice Wilder, sera la destination danse à Montréal et au Québec, un endroit unique au Canada offrant de nombreux nouveaux services tant aux professionnels du milieu qu’au grand public. Reconnaissant les acquis de ce secteur des arts de la scène, le gouvernement du Québec et le gouvernement du Canada a permis à ces joueurs clés de la danse d’élire domicile dans un emplacement des plus stratégiques, en plein cœur du Quartier des spectacles.

Afin de compléter le financement du projet, estimé à 99,2 millions de dollars les quatre organismes ont entrepris une campagne majeure de financement conjointe de 25,8 millions, présidée par la respectée femme d’affaires Danièle Henkel, et pour laquelle ils ont déjà récolté 13 millions. Déterminés à créer une vitrine inestimable du brio montréalais, québécois et canadien en danse partout dans le monde, ils invitent maintenant toute la communauté à contribuer financièrement à la réussite de leur campagne.

EDIFICE WILDER: ESPACE DANSE A NEW HOME FOR LES GRANDS BALLETS In 2017, four leading Montreal dance organizations will be injecting new energy into the Place des Festivals. Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal, Tangente, the École de danse contemporaine de Montréal and Agora de la danse will be taking up residency in the Wilder Building. Renovated and expanded, the building will be equipped with infrastructures meeting international standards: equipment and facilities that are indispensable for positioning Montreal and Quebec as world leaders in dance creation and innovation.

Espace danse, as this new cultural address will be called, will be much more than a site for training, instruction and creation: it will be the dance destination of choice in Montreal and Quebec, a complex unlike any other in Canada, offering a host of new services to dance professionals and the general public. Acknowledging the contributions the discipline has made over the years, the governments of Quebec and Canada have enabled these key dance institutions to move to a strategic location in the heart of Montreal’s Quartier des spectacles. In order to complete the funding of this project, estimated at $99.2 million, the four organizations have undertaken a major fundraising campaign with a target of $25.8 million, for which they have already raised $13 million.

Determined to provide an international showcase for the incredible vitality of Montreal, Quebec and Canadian dance, these organizations are now inviting the entire community to help make their fundraising campaign a success.

BÉNÉVOLES ET AMIS DES GRANDS VOLUNTEERS & FRIENDS OF LES GRANDS Plus de 300 bénévoles auront participé en 2014-2015 aux projets de financement des Grands Ballets. Ils ont offert un soutien logistique essentiel au Fonds Casse-Noisette pour enfants, au Gala annuel et au Marché Casse-Noisette. Ils ont également recueilli des dons permettant de couvrir certains frais de physiothérapie des danseurs.

More than 300 volunteers helped out with Les Grands Ballets' funding activities in 2014-2015. They provided essential logistical support for projects such as The Nutcracker Fund for Children, the annual Benefit Gala, and the Nutcracker Market. They also raised sufficient funds to partially cover the troupe’s physiotherapy services.
