Pastor’s Message

For many years, I have carried a card around in my planner that has quotes about vision. Three of those quotes are: • Some people see things as they are and say “why.” I dream things that never were and say “why not.” — George Bernard Shaw • Nothing in this world is as powerful as an idea whose time has come. — Victor Hugo • The problems of the world cannot possibly be solved by skeptics or cynics whose horizons are limited by obvious realities.

We need people who can dream of things that never were. — John F. Kennedy It seems to me that thinking about “dreams and visions” as United Methodist Christians is most appropriate for us to consider just now. No doubt all of you are aware that February 22 to 26 will be one of the most important five days in the history of the United Methodist Church. Who we have been, who we are, as well as the direction the future is calling us to be, will be shaped rather dramatically by the decisions in St. Louis.

This Special Session General Conference was called at the request of the 2016 General Conference because of the impasse that occurred over the topic of human sexuality. It is a debate that has been going on in the United Methodist Church for forty years. In 2016, the impasse seemed more disturbing to the delegates and they wisely asked the Council of Bishops to lead a process through this rather volatile topic. The Council of Bishops from our Global Church charted a course that included naming a team of 32 people (again, from around the world) to study, listen, pray, debate, and create a recommended course of action. The “One Church Plan” apparently is the compromise position that is supported by the majority of Bishops. Yet to be faithful to the variety of perspectives in the United Methodist Church, The Commission on The Way Forward and the Bishops decided to take to General Conference three options: 1) One Church Plan, 2) Traditional Plan, and 3) a hybrid plan called the Connectional Conference Plan.

Just a few days ago, news was released that some 78 additional petitions have been approved to be considered.

One of those petitions is called A Simple Plan.

All of this is to say, I ask you and encourage you, as thoughtful, attentive, and faithful United Methodist Christians, to do your homework. Read about the history. Read the proposals – all three of them, plus,

read the Simple Plan. Be informed for yourself.

As your pastor, I have tried to give you information and enter regularly in the dialogue. I have preached – as have several guest preachers on the topic of being welcoming and inclusive. We have had Pastoral Forums. We have held classes. Last fall, we had a week-long emphasis on expanding our horizons about inclusivity. For several years (and as a fruit of the visionary process that we entered in 2014) as a congregation, we have worked diligently at defining who we are and what our ministry values are. It led us to adopt a Theological Statement followed by an adopted Statement of Inclusion that were both unanimously approved by Leadership Council and the Annual Church Conference. We have decided that as a congregation, we want to be a positive example of what it means to have “Open Minds, Open Hearts, and Open Doors.” That phrase is not just a slogan for us.

We have been on this journey right along with the Bishops and delegates to General Conference. So for the entire month of February, I ask you to join with me in praying for the United Methodist Church. A decision needs to be made. Choosing to do nothing or to maintain the status quo is not a viable option this time. Pray for the Bishops who lead. Pray for the delegates. Pray for the Holy Spirit to give extraordinary wisdom and courage for all who gather in St. Louis that they may do the right thing for the right reason.

Pray for our own congregation and the probable decisions that we will need to make after General Conference.

It is both a difficult time and an exciting time. God knows that we need vision and visionary leaders. It’s time to live in to our dreams and visions. All we can do is pray, and that will be enough.

May God’s grace and peace be with us all in this season of prayer.

Radical H ospitality Just One Word What’s a Word of the Year? Each year, organizations, like Merriam-Webster determine a Word of the Year, based on search online searches and polls. With just one word, we can glimpse into a past year. For example, in 2004, the word was blog; in 2008, it was bailout. With just one word, memories of that year may have just bubbled up.

What is Merriam-Webster’s word of 2018? Justice.

I feel this was an accurate choice for 2018: racial justice, social justice, criminal justice, and economic justice were all topics that we talked about and researched.

While it’s nice to have a word that reflects the past year, I really appreciate the trend of picking a word for the new year.

Rather than set a New Year’s resolution (that statistically fails by February), pick a word to guide your year, a type of mantra that brings focus.

I see hope through the passion and involvement of our church family. I am amazed at how many people give of their time, talents, and treasures.

In a world that sometimes seems heartless, our congregation brings heart and hope.

What’s word of the year?

Picking a word was something I had been thinking about recently. However, I hadn’t made my choice until our staff prayer service last week. Pastor Bob used 2 Corinthians 4:7-18 as our guide for prayer and discussion and the word “hope” stirred in me.

Hope is now my Word of the Year for 2019. I need to seek hope and I want to share hope.

My questions for you are: Where do you see hope? I want to see what hope looks like through your eyes. And, what’s your word of the year?

PASSIONATE WORSHIP Music and Arts Ministry

The Rich Diversity of God’s Creative Expression This February marks the 46th annual Celebration of the Arts. An amazing and enduring legacy, this juried art show focuses on “sacred” art that speaks of God in our creative pursuits. All of us, as artists, are collaborators and full participants in God’s rich creation. At First Church, all are encouraged to express their art, be it music and song, all varieties of visual art, poetry, story-telling, dance, drama, and the art of living our lives in the context of a faith. It is always amazing to witness the diversity of expression found in the gallery each year. This should come as no surprise, however, as the rich diversity of God’s creative expression is on full display to us every day.

Celebration of the Arts is a 13-day festival of the arts, which began in 1972 and has grown to represent one of the largest juried sacred art shows in the country. This year, our juror is Daniel Connolly, Assistant Professor of Art and Design and the Director of the Flora Kirsch Beck Art Gallery at Alma College in Alma, Michigan. One area of his research and writing has focused on pilgrimage, and how ancient, illustrated maps may have functioned as a meditational aid in making an imagined pilgrimage.

Running February 16 - 27, the gallery is open Sunday to Thursdays from 10:00 am - 6:00 pm, Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm, and February 27 from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm. Celebration features many individual events including concerts and art activities.

During this year’s show, we are featuring an exhibit in our hallway gallery that is organized and curated

by Roman Williams, a Calvin College professor and Director of the McGregor Undergraduate Research Program for the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Williams considers himself a visual sociologist of religion. The exhibit is part of a larger, interfaith project that is likely to be quite informative and provocative.

Celebration of the Arts officially kicks off at the Artists’ Reception on Friday, February 15 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. All are welcome to come see the opening of the gallery, meet and talk with artists, hear jazz with saxophonist, Hugh Dewitt, enjoy a spread of tasty desserts, and witness the presentation of the awards.

That afternoon, February 17 at 3:00 pm, we present Mandala, the select treble ensemble from the Grand Rapids Symphonic Youth Choir, directed by Sean Ivory. You will be amazed at the impressive, powerful, and unified sound of this ensemble.

On Sunday morning, February 24, our guest musicians will be from The Girls Choral Academy of Grand Rapids, conducted by Lori Tennenhouse. The academy rehearses weekly at First Church and offers a unique program of music for girls (1st through 12th grade) who love to sing and wish to grow not only musically, but personally, in self-esteem, and in leadership skills as well.

That afternoon, February 24 at 3:00 pm, we present the piano-vocal duo of Diane Penning and Paul Langford. This is a rare opportunity to hear these two who are masters of their craft. Associate Director of the Grand Rapids Symphony, John Varineau writes that “Diane Penning and Paul Langford are the real deal! Diane has the perfect voice to present music from Broadway and Hollywood, and Paul is a perfect match for Diane… Our audiences ate it up!”

Intentional Faith Development Children Experience and Dwell in God’s Presence What is this “Children and Worship” program that our children scamper off to every Sunday morning?

In Children and Worship, children learn about God while experiencing God. This is all done in the context of worship. Whereas a typical church education class explains and interprets the mysteries of God, Children and Worship allows children to experience and dwell in God’s presence.

Children and Worship was designed

by Sonja Stewart and Jerome Berryman in the late 1980s and quickly became and continues to be a vibrant nation-wide movement.

The inspiration and philosophy of Children and Worship stem from Dr. Maria Montessori’s (1870-1952) ideas of educating young children.

Following are pillars of both the Montessori and Children and Worship philosophies: 1. Children thrive in an environment where beauty and orderliness are emphasized and appreciated.

2. The minds of children between the ages of 2 - 7 are “absorbent;” they assimilate without much conscious effort.

3. Effective education respects the unique ability levels, innate tendencies, and natural intelligences of each child and allows him/her appropriate freedom and choice.

4. The most effective classroom leader for this age group and for assimilation is a leader who guides experience rather than a teacher who instructs. (https:// www.montessoritraining.net) Our two worship centers (one for preschool-age children and one for kindergarten - 2nd grade children) are filled with artifacts that inspire beauty and awe: felt banners and satin underlays appropriate to the season of the church calendar, God’s stories--set out one by one as each is introduced to the children Sunday by Sunday, the prayer corner, the Christ Candle, God’s book of stories with picturelabeled bookmarks marking all of the stories the children have experienced so far, books and puzzles of these same stories, simple craft supplies for self-

expression, rugs which the children use during their time alone with God. Like the sanctuary in “big church” our Children and Worship centers are meant to soothe and inspire.

They are orderly--with a place and purpose for each thing. The children quickly learn that when we are in our “sanctuary” we take our time; we speak softly and are careful not to interrupt others because they may be speaking or listening to God in their own special way; we are careful and respectful of the things in the worship center--we handle the story pieces with care and reverence, and we put things away in their proper places when we are finished with them.

Our Children and Worship program guides and inspires the young members of our church family as they learn to walk with God, each in his/her own special way.

Risk-Taking Outreach and Mission Dr. Marty and Hollee Graber continue their work to bring resources to the Maasai people of Kenya. Their work in the community spans more than 15 years. Their most recent effort is a new hospital and clinic building slated to open for patients this coming February. This hospital provides medical and maternal/ child care locally with the next available care 2-3 hours away.

With this milestone, we wanted to give the congregation a glimpse of all that they have accomplished. Our financial assistance, along with that of many others, provides for health and education in a remote part of Kenya.

Yearly Accomplishments to date: 2004: Baseline study of the area.

2005: An eight-room building was built to provide short-term housing for tuberculosis patients.

2006: The first classroom was constructed. We acquired 70 acres adjacent to this project where a proposed compound and Agricultural Training Program is planned, to provided space for a pole barn, and a teaching and housing area.

2007: A second classroom was built.

2008: A third classroom was built, as well as a solar cooking and bio-sand filter programs.

2009: A fourth classroom was built, and a cook house for the school lunch program was renovated. We shipped the first 40-foot container that provided equipment and supplies needed for the beginning of the hospital care program.

2010: The Agriculture Program, now on the 70 acres of acquired land, was begun, and the first building, a large pole barn, was constructed. A greenhouse was erected, garden areas were cleared and planted and guest houses were begun. Land was partially fenced.

2011: The garden extension area was completed, and a cook house/teaching area was constructed.

2012: Phase One of the hospital, inclusive of maternal child health facilities, was erected and another classroom was completed.

2013: A second 40-foot container was shipped to the Kenya project. Items sent were tools for building, such as a large generator, miter saw, table saw, electric battery-powered screwdrivers, hammers, electric lights for illumination while working, ladders, professional paint sprayer, brushes, paint pans and rollers, nails, screws, and other medical supplies for stocking the hospital. The school classrooms now have 350-plus children in attendance. A wind and later solar generator was used at the project site to provide power. Additional large tanks were purchased to provide water to the community.

Solar panels are used to provide the project’s power sources. A grid using solar power was erected next to the pole barn to provide power to the project.

2014: A second deep well was dug, providing the project with water, which will be connected to the hospital, cook house, bath houses, gardens, cow barn, green house. Milk cows were purchased for breeding and milk production, and a new sewing center to train women to sew was built in 2014 by friends, Threads of Hope, St Petersburg, Florida.

2016-2018: Construction of Phase Two for the hospital facility planned, including a pharmacy extension, a laboratory, five patient rooms, two surgery suites, X-ray and digital developer, laundry, sterilization area, mechanical area, storage room and doctor/consult/library/communications area.

This building attaches to Phase One using a large wide corridor where wheelchairs and gurneys will be kept. Because of the growth of the building, it will now become a full hospital, serving the greater population of 350,000 Maasai of the area..The full hospital is designed to be self-sustaining.

We celebrate these acts of service and continue to support them through our regular mission offerings.

In the future, a medical mission team from our church could go to Kenya to serve the community.

EXTRAVAGANT GENEROSITY Resource Development

Making a Difference Having retired last spring, I decided to volunteer this school year as a tutor with the First Church ministry supporting the Martin Luther King, Jr., Leadership Academy. I have never been a teacher and had no idea what I was doing. But I faithfully went ahead, believing what I was told, that if you have an hour to spare each week for this ministry, you will make a difference in the life of a child living in poverty.

Each week I ended my session wondering if I had really done anything to help my students read any better. One of my boys, a charming first grader with a huge smile and witty disposition, struggled to read the word “the.” Each time he came to it, even in the midst of more complicated words that he could indeed read, he still stumbled with this word! I began just randomly stopping our time together several times and writing “the” on a piece of paper to get him to learn it. Yet he still stumbled…something about the “th” blend that my educator wife tried to explain to me was tripping him up.

One day in December, I again simply wrote down the word “the” and asked him to tell me what it said, wondering if I could get him to just memorize it. He struggled, as usual. Then he asked me if he could write something for me to read back to him.

Surprised, I agreed. He proceeded to write a series of letters that I could not decipher at all. He asked me what it said, and I asked him to read it back to me. He said, “I love you!”

I will never again question if I, or any of the other tutors, or others who support this ministry are making a difference. This little guy may stumble over a simple

word, but regardless of academic progress, our time together is paying great dividends for him, and for me, too!

I think it is often that way with ministry. It is easy to question if we are having an impact on a hurting world. We see the struggles people have, but we fail to see the goodness that comes from our faithful ministry.

It is the same with our financial gifts as well. It is sometimes difficult to make a connection between our giving and the impact it has on people’s lives.

Extravagant financial generosity enables many personal touch points like my MLK experience. If every one of us at First Church could find a place to engage in personal ministry in some small (or even big) way, more of us would have these “aha” moments where we see the impact of our faithful work. In addition to the MLK ministry, there are so many other ways to put our faith into action. I hope 2019 is the year you find that special ministry spot that is calling your name, and that your financial giving reflects the joy that comes from witnessing for Christ.

Oh, and guess what! Last week my little guy was reading a sentence and flew right through the word “the,” reading it flawlessly!

Congregational Care

God created each one of us in unique and special ways. Our unique qualities and characteristics also represent the unique gifts we bring to the church community. There is a balance that we are working towards in finding ways for individuals to use their gifts, as well as find ways to meet the different and distinct needs that individuals and families have within our community. A few months ago, a group started a visioning process for congregational care. As we continue to work and come together, we are asking some important questions: • How are we meeting different human and spiritual needs?

• What is care?

• How can we do what we do in different ways?

• What are ways for us to collaborate with other practitioners and organizations within Grand Rapids?

The group continues to meet and look forward seeing different ways to meet the different needs of the congregation and community. We are looking at ways to expand making sure that all the different age groups in the congregation have opportunities to grow and participate through different experiences that we can provide. More details will come in the coming months as you will be invited to participate as we listen, learn, and grow. This is a time of reflection as together we move forward.

In the new year, we are continuing to move forward with the day to day personal visits that are done through the pastoral care team, congregational care assistants, and Stephen Ministers. At the same time, we are looking at new models for congregational care and listening to the different needs of children, youth, and adults of all ages as part of our visioning forward.

Our collaboration with Clark Retirement Community continues. In February, Rev. Joe Huston will join the team that partners with Clark in providing leadership in worship and visitation. We continue to find ways to meet resident needs through person centered care and attention to those in need. This is done through visits with Stephen Ministers, First Pulse | Winter ‘19
