We go to Kauai every other year. This year we had the opportunity to travel to San Diego and stay at your property in Oceanside and finally at Coronado Beach Resort.

From day one we were treated exceptionally well. We were very impressed with the attention we received when we were greeted by Gary at Coronado Beach Resort. He was so accommodating and made us feel warmly welcome.

As I prepared to call the resort on my cell phone my husband received a call from Gary on his cell phone.

He had possession of my purse and sunglasses.

Kudos to the well trained women that cleaned our room. The process began immediately, after we left. Also, my belongings were brought to Gary’s attention. This exceptional man got in his car and drove to the airport! Within 20 minutes, he was walking up to the door at the airport, where we were waiting.

This is a world of discontent; we read about the violence and erratic behavior of people every day.

Often times we wonder what has happened to “human kindness.” Even our politics is scary and troubling.

We live in Chicago! This kindness is so unlikely.

Gary is an incredible young man. We are so grateful to him for making our stay pleasant and for showing us that there are good people in our world who need to be recognized!

I need to tell you that we had a great experience at Coronado Beach Resort. Gary did influence that feeling of comfort and acceptance immediately.

Kauai is full of hiking trails, but on this particular day we decided to go off the beaten bath and explore the cliffs just outside of the Point at Poipu. We stayed here after spending the first half of our trip at Hanalei Bay Resort on the North Shore.

The South Shore of Kauai has a totally different vibe from the North Shore. While the North Shore is very remote and undeveloped, the South Shore has a more active feel (by Kauai standards). It’s a great place to go with kids. You can snorkel, shop, golf, or just hang out at the beach.

it’s hard to imagine a time when Coronado wasn’t a popular resort town. No matter what time of year you visit, the Crown City is always humming with life, its pristine beaches and small town vibe making it one of San Diego’s can’t-miss attractions.

Less than 150 years ago,

the peninsula was an unoccupied Spanish

hacienda, covered with nothing but coastal

scrub. It wasn’t until the late 19th century

that Coronado caught the attention of wealthy investors, and it was only about 25 years ago

that Coronado Beach Resort became an important part of the resort community.

In 1542, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo claimed the port of San Miguel for the Spanish crown. Sixty years later, Sebastian Vizcaino renamed the site San Diego.

His crude map of the area included the Coronado peninsula, which means “Crowned One” in Spanish.

Vizcaino was the last European to visit the area for 167 years.

Spain founded the first presidio and mission in San Diego in 1769, after King Carlos III of Spain became concerned about Russia’s encroaching presence in western North America. San Diego became the first official city in what is known today as California.

In 1821, Mexico gained its independence from Spain and the newly-formed government began issuing land grants to prominent citizens and loyal Mexican military officers. In 1846, Governor Pio Pico gave Coronado to Don Pedro Carillo, who began using the land to raise cattle. Five months later, Carillo sold the land to an American captain for $1,000.

THE HOTEL DEL CORONA DO & TENT CIT Y

Over the next 39 years, Coronado changed hands several more times. No one saw much commercial potential in the peninsula until 1885, when a group of investors known as the Coronado Beach Company

purchased the land for $110,000 and announced their plans to build a beachfront hotel.

News of the hotel sparked new interest in the peninsula. The Coronado Beach Company began selling land parcels at auction and created the San Diego and Coronado Ferry Company, which made its first run in 1886.

On February 19, 1888, the newly-built Hotel del Coronado opened its doors to the public and began attracting travelers from around the country, who flocked to the peninsula for its sunny climate, island feel, and picturesque beaches. Postcards from the era show dozens of guests wading in the waves in front of the Hotel del Coronado. Other daily activities at the T I M E TO G E T H E R : S P R I N G / S U M M E R 2016

The Coronado Water Company also promoted the health benefits of the natural springs nearby, and many travelers came from back East after their

doctors told them to move to San Diego’s temperate climate. The railroads went so far as to say in their advertisements that “People are so healthy in San Diego that no doctors will find employment there.”

In 1889, John Spreckels purchased the then-bankrupt Coronado Beach Company holdings for $500,000, an incredibly low sum considering that the Hotel del Coronado was recently included in a multibillion dollar real estate transaction! Eleven years after Spreckels bought Coronado Beach Company, he set up several hundred tents and thatched roof cottages south of the hotel and what is now Coronado Municipal Beach.

Tent City, as it became known, offered rustic lodging for tourists who could not afford the opulence of the Hotel del Coronado. For $4.50 a week, visitors could rent a canvas tent furnished with a bed, wash bowl, dresser, and chair. The accommodations may not have been glamorous, but you certainly couldn’t beat the location. Tent City remained a popular summer destination for more than 40 years, until it was closed to make room for the Silver Strand Highway.

CORONA DO BE ACH R ESORT

After Tent City closed, more hotels began popping up, including a motel on a half-acre lot between Adella Avenue and Glorietta Boulevard on Orange Avenue.

In the late 1980s two local developers made plans to tear down the motel and build a 75-unit hotel there, to be operated as an annex to the Hotel del Coronado.

The developers planned to obtain financing from a Japanese bank, but when the Japanese banking crisis hit in 1989, they found themselves with approved permits and plans, but no construction funds.

At that point, Grand Pacific Resorts stepped in with alternative financing. My business partner and I wanted to avoid the costly and time-consuming process of reapplying for permits, so we kept the exterior architecture plans intact and reconfigured the interior to include 53 timeshare units.

INSIDER INFO Archaeological excavations suggest that the La Jolla tribe visited Coronado seasonally in search of fish, game, berries, and other food beginning approximately 7,000 years ago.

San Diego is often referred to as the “Plymouth Rock of the West.” It’s where the Spanish first landed when they arrived in California in 1769 after a 167-year hiatus.

John D. Spreckels was one of San Diego’s best known entrepreneurs and extremely influential in local development. He and his brother donated the funds for the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park.

When the resort opened for pre-sales in 1991, demand was overwhelming, even though the economy was in the depths of a recession. In fact, intervals at Coronado Beach Resort were selling so quickly that I personally typed contracts alongside the contract processors for the first couple of weeks.

Part of the draw of Coronado Beach Resort was that this was truly the public’s only opportunity to buy a fractional piece of real estate in Coronado. Shortly after construction began, the City of Coronado placed a ban on new timeshare projects, which is still in effect today. Even the most run down homes on Coronado sold for upwards of one million dollars, so a timeshare week at $15,000 to $25,000 was a deal.

In the end, the resort sold out one full year sooner than projected.

Today Coronado Beach Resort continues the Coronado tradition of hospitality. Every year, thousands of owners and guests visit Coronado Beach Resort to make memories with friends and family while enjoying the scenic environment.

Located right on the water, five minutes from downtown South Lake Tahoe, the Tahoe Beach & Ski Club is a fantastic spot to stay. With amenities ranging from a kitchen to a private beach with a ping pong table on it, it’s hard not to be excited about a summer vacation here.

I had the opportunity to visit for a few days and loved my time at this resort.

WHEN I ARRIVED AT THE RESORT

I easily found parking and had a nice welcome from the resort staff. I saw many of the same people during my time there and was always greeted warmly. It was a great way to start our stay.

was like a home away from home. We had a half kitchen with a full fridge, living room area and table, two patios, two bathrooms, and a jetted tub. It was one of those places that you have a hard time leaving.

The resort itself is five different buildings. We stayed on the third floor of the main building in a onebedroom unit. With only a few minutes of walking we were at the private beach, which had plenty of seating, barbecues, ping pong tables, and a heated pool and spa. It was a great place to relax and watch the sunset or to go for a swim without fighting the crowds.

One of the things I really liked was that the room had a DVD player and that you could check out DVDs from the main lobby. They had a great selection and it was fun to spend a day exploring Tahoe then relax with a movie. The room also had two balconies which was nice for relaxing after a long day.

INSIDER INFO Tales of Tahoe Tessie, an 80-foot cryptozoological creature, date back more than two centuries. The animal purportedly lives in an underwater tunnel beneath Cave Rock.

Lake Tahoe’s water is one of the purest large lakes in the world. Commercially distilled water is 99.998 percent pure.

Lake Tahoe comes close at 99.994 percent.

Development has decreased the clarity of Lake Tahoe, but it’s still clear enough that you can see a white dinner plate 70 feet below the surface.

The Area and it was in a really good location. Most places you will want to drive to, but the drive is usually pretty quick. A few of the spots I recommend for food near the resort are Artemis Mediterranean Grill, which is a three-minute walk, and MacDuff’s Public House, which is a five-minute drive. Really though, you can’t go wrong with the food in this town, there are so many fantastic spots.

All in all, Tahoe Beach & Ski Club is a great place to stay in South Lake Tahoe. I was incredibly pleased with my time there, everything from the staff to the room was top-notch and I can’t wait to stay here again.

joined Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort & Hotel as general manager more than 25 years ago, bringing his Midwestern warmth to the 193-unit beachfront resort in Carlsbad, California. According to Joli Hatch, Randy’s assistant general manager, “He lives and breathes hospitality. It’s in his DNA. Our team couldn’t ask for a better leader.”

Over the years, Randy has watched multiple generations grow up at his resort. There are numerous grandchildren of longtime owners who have known Randy their whole life and are now bringing their children to Carlsbad. Owners recognize that his interest is genuine, and there are many he counts as personal friends.

The Crumbs, for example, visit Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort & Hotel every year, always bringing more grandchildren, cousins, and close friends for a reunion.

Randy personally confirms the family’s arrangements and joins the reunion every year as an honorary guest.

Randy also hosts a weekly Coffee Klatch. The informal gathering originally began as an open forum for owners to voice their concerns. In practice, people come just to spend time with Randy.

“Years later, he’ll see someone and remember their last conversation,” says Joli, “He’ll ask about their son’s football career, if they ever learned more German phrases, or if that 30th high school reunion is still taking place next year.”

At 13 years old, I worked at a liquor store, stocking shelves, sorting soda bottles, and bagging ice.

I wanted to be a lot of different things early in life, but among them was hotel management.

At 11 years old my family stayed at the brand new Marriott at O’Hare in Chicago. I was so impressed that I started talking about hotel management and resort development. By the time I went to college, I was pretty well settled on hotel management and development.

What surprised you most about timeshare when you first began?

I was a hotel guy with no timeshare experience.

I very quickly found a difference in the guest attitude that focused around the sense of ownership of the property and a sense of pride about what was included in the resort.

Summed up most easily, I was not the manager, I was their manager.

I tend to love whatever I’m doing at the moment, so away from work, I am generally over-committed and over-focused on all the other things in my life.

Probably a mechanical engineer; inventing machines to make everyday tasks easier.

Best piece of career advice you’ve ever received?

Follow your Bliss! Don’t chase money, do what you have a passion for. We spend too much of our lives working to not enjoy it.

What is one thing you would like to change about your life?

My hobbies are always changing with new influences. At the moment, I’m really enjoying rock hounding, rock collecting, lapidary arts, and jewelry making. I’m also always doing stuff with my four kids, college football, gardening, and genealogy.

What at the top of your bucket list?

I’d love to snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef and spend a night on the town in Rio de Janeiro during Carnival.

I’d like to be taller! I don’t remember ever being given a choice.

last summer when they shared a video of Jim demonstrating his passion for collecting sea glass. The video was part of a ResorTime contest, and since then this dynamic duo has been traveling all over the West Coast taking videos of their adventures.

Prior to retirement, Jim was a real estate development executive and served as a pastor at a large community church. He now makes jewelry from the sea glass he finds and sells it online as a hobby. Shelly owned an executive recruiting firm for more than 26 years. The couple lives in Southern California.

Jim and Shelly own a week at Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort & Hotel, where they vacation every November. They also use GPX to stay at other resorts in Tahoe and Hawaii. They love antiquing, cooking, fishing, and spending as much Time Away‌ Time Together as possible.

At age 63 my husband discovered a new passion, and it’s something we can do together every time we stay at our timeshare. In just 9 months, we’ve collected more than 500 pieces of sea glass from San Diego to Monterey. It’s great exercise walking the beach.

We enjoy the fresh air, and we’ve found a hobby that we both can enjoy.

Carlsbad definitely tops the list of our favorite driveto destinations. Jim and I make the trip every other week to collect sea glass, try new foods at the farmers market, and visit our parents. We love that as owners we have day use privileges at Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort & Hotel. It’s perfect for our quick visits!

Jim has even watched YouTube videos to learn how to make sea glass jewelry, and we attended our first sea glass convention earlier this year. We have been collecting antiques for a number of years, and sea glass is now another ‘hunt’ we look forward to each time we vacation.

We own one week in Carlsbad, and this year our son’s family stayed with us. One day we hopped on the COASTER (the Carlsbad station is within walking distance of the resort) and cruised down to San Diego.

You can drive I-5 in about 40 to 60 minutes, but riding the COASTER from Carlsbad to San Diego is much more scenic and more fun!

Jim and I love to travel, especially now that we’re retired. In just the past few months, we’ve visited Texas and traveled throughout California. It’s been a blast, but Lake Tahoe was definitely our most memorable trip this past winter. We strolled through Olympic Village, took the Squaw Valley aerial tram to High Camp, and made breakfast for the friends and family staying with us. The weather was perfect— brisk but not too cold, and there was a ton of snow!

One of the great things about being an owner with Grand Pacific Resorts is that we can buy Bonus Weeks through GPX without having to give up our use week in Carlsbad. We stayed at Tahoe Beach & Ski Club and Red Wolf Lodge at Squaw Valley, where we experienced a real winter. It’s something we don’t really get in Southern California.

Creamy Guacamole

SERVES 8

The great thing about this creamy guacamole recipe is that it’s so flexible. You can add more or less of each ingredient, double the amount, and add your own twist with additions like cilantro and garlic. Guacamole browns easily when it’s exposed to air, so whip it upright before you plan to serve it. Adding a little lime juice helps everything stay green a little longer.

4 ripe avocados

2 tbsp sour cream

¾ cup chopped white onion

Salt and pepper

½ cup mayonnaise

Chopped tomatoes (for garnish)

½ cup salsa

Shredded cheese (for garnish)

1. Cut the avocados in half and remove the pit.

Scoop the flesh out of the skin into a bowl.

2. Chop the avocado into cubes with a knife and add salt and pepper to taste. Mash with a fork, making sure to leave some chunks.

3. Add the onion, salsa, mayonnaise, and sour cream to the avocado and fold the mixture to combine.

4. Scoop your guacamole into a serving bowl and garnish with tomatoes and cheese.

5. Serve with tortilla chips.

In the winter of 2011, I enjoyed an evening with friends at a wonderful new restaurant called Cuvee. This was my fifth time experiencing the fabulous cuisine and ambiance while enjoying the company of my new friends— Cuvee’s chef, Jordan Mackey, and general manager, Morgan Craft.

Mackey also graciously waived the usual corkage fee for any owners that brought wine from Napa Valley.

In just a few weeks, Dinner with Marilynn was born!

While at dinner, we discussed the lack of social events during the winter months, aside from the usual wine tasting. We wondered what we could do to increase the number of options for owners and guests. As the guest services manager, I’m always looking for new ideas for our activities department.

Chef Mackey suggested that the restaurant host a weekly dinner just for RiverPointe Napa Valley.

Tuesdays are typically slow for the restaurant, so we decided it would be a good night for the staff to accommodate a large party from the resort.

Together we developed a $33 prix fixe menu that included an appetizer, entrée, and dessert. Chef 42

Our event began slowly, with no more than four guests attending each Tuesday. But I was determined to make this a success, and even if one guest signed up I would meet them for dinner. However, by the time spring came, Dinner with Marilynn had become so popular that we decided to keep the event going year round.

The food is always fabulous, but what keeps owners coming back is the opportunity to meet other owners.

I’ve had people unexpectedly reunite with old neighbors and coworkers at Dinner with Marilynn, while other owners make new and lasting friendships.

It’s truly a memorable event.

Dinner with Marilynn always begins with introductions. Owners come from all over the United States, although many travel less than 100 miles to stay at RiverPointe. We also entertain some

international travelers. It’s fun to watch people connect over similar occupations. Perhaps they served on the same ship in the Navy, grew up in the same town, or had childhood homes on the same street!

Cuvee served me well up until its closing in 2014.

I thought it would be difficult to find a venue as accommodating as Cuvee to host Dinner with Marilynn. But to my surprise, our little event had already become well known at other restaurants in town and many were very happy to receive us.

With the added selection of venues, Dinner with Marilynn continues weekly on Tuesday nights.

You’ll find great live music at this casual hangout. It’s also home to the $5 Hamburger and Beer Tuesdays.

ResorTime, YOUR NIGHTLY RENTAL BENEFIT, donated $2,500 to the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe in February after the non-profit organization won beCause Destination Matters, a crowdsourced giving contest. Rather than mailing a check, ResorTime invited owners and guests to share photos of their pets. We selected one lucky family, the Aguilars from Ripon, California, to join us in Lake Tahoe to present the donation.

The Aguilars love to travel with their miniature poodle, Oso, who’s always up for adventure. Last summer, they took the pint-size pup to Lake Tahoe 44

for Independence Day, where he enjoyed hiking, kayaking, fishing, and cycling. Oso often tags along in a doggie backpack and even has his own starshaped goggles!

Our donation is making a significant difference for pets in Lake Tahoe, giving them a second chance.

The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe will use the $2,500 to provide food, vaccinations, and spay or neuter surgeries for two litters of puppies. We know that pets are the heart of many families, and we want to do our part to support the cause.

Founded in 1994 by a group of committed volunteers, the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe has become the driving force in animal rescue and adoption for the Tahoe region.

We first met the non-profit’s volunteers in June 2015, when we hosted a two-day scavenger hunt in the Tahoe region. The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe tied with the League to Save Tahoe, and both received a $1,200 donation from Grand Pacific Resorts.
