Masons on the Hill In what promises to become a regularly recurring event, Masonic brethren who are Members of Congress or Capitol Hill staffers gathered on Wednesday morning, October 3, 2007, for a special breakfast hosted by the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia.

The event was a valuable opportunity for fellowship among brethren who do not always have time to attend lodge meetings, while providing outreach between the Grand Lodge and Masons on the Hill. For the full story, please read Brother Perry Blatstein’s report on page 11.

Message from

The Grand Master My Brethren; this is my last official message to you.

You honored me by electing me as your Grand Master and I was installed in the Grand Oriental Chair in a very solemn and dignified ceremony on that Saturday afternoon during the Third Communication on December 16, 2006. Now, nearly a year later, coming to the end of my unique journey with you, I am deeply thankful for the great opportunity afforded me to carry out my programs and fulfill my promises.

This has also provided me with some of the richest moments of my Masonic experience.

I have been proud to be your Brother and a member of this Jurisdiction and having the opportunity to share with you my vision, and ideas and the programs necessary for the future of our Grand Lodge and to work with you as a team to implement those plans, programs and projects.

• Promote significant joint projects with participation of the Grand Lodge, constituent lodges and appendant bodies as a Masonic family to enhance the cultural richness of our Fraternity in Washington DC and strengthen our brotherly bond.

• Organize and promote Community outreach and public events to promote the image of Freemasonry and our Grand Lodge and the pride in the Craft. To this end, we have strived to identify effective and meaningful charity and Philanthropy projects, in partnership with lodges, appendant bodies and Masonic Charity organizations such as Masonic Foundation and MESH, in order to raise our visibility and expose the benevolent nature of our Fraternity.

• And strive to create a meaningful and thoughtful budget and prudent financial management of Grand Lodge resources.

Detailed report of all our activities and programs will be reflected in the proceedings of the Grand Lodge for 2007, to be read by one and all. However, I have the following recommendations to complement our programs and plans, which I deem necessary to ensure further success in future.

GRAND MASTER’S MESSAGE

1. Grand Lodge Finances: Our Grand Lodge must be financially strong and prepared to take on effective projects for strengthening our lodges, engaging in meaningful community outreach and important philanthropic and charity projects. Although our assets are strong and increasing, their income is not sufficient to compensate the yearly inflation and at the same time provide for our expenses. Our dues are completely out of step with today’s cost as is the case in many of our lodges. In our Semi-annual Communication, the Trustees proposed and the Grand Lodge approved to study this issue, and my recommendation is to take up this issue in earnest and prepare a proposal for the consideration of the Grand Lodge, next year.

2. Philanthropy and Charities: We ought to study and select a number of major charities for the Grand Lodge, in partnership with the Masonic Foundation, MESH and our Lodges to support them. In this regard, our focus should be more on education, children, schools, and veterans.

Communication on 2nd Saturday in December. At present the Third Communication agenda is limited only to a few ceremonial functions. In this new situation, we should be able to expand the agenda for the Third Communication and provide the Grand Lodge with the opportunity to discuss and act on other possible issues and actions, which may come up between the two communications.

My Brethren, as I near the end of my term as your Grand Master, at times I feel that I did not have enough time to fulfill all my promises and execute all my programs as I had envisaged. However, I am very proud and thankful that you gave me this opportunity even for a short time to perform my duty to the best of my ability. During this year, I have had the good fortune to meet and associate with so many dedicated and great Masons, more specially, our Past Grand Masters and leadership of our lodges, and I have had the special privilege of working closely with some of the finest Masons, as elected and appointed Grand Lodge officers, and Trustees, in a team spirit and in an atmosphere of brotherly love and harmony, and I thank them for their support all throughout the year. However, I want to take this opportunity to specially recognize RWB Akram R. Elias, Deputy Grand Master, RW Kwame Acquaah, Senior Grand Warden for their unceasing support, and MWB Mansour Hatefi our Grand Secretary, for his valuable advice.

Interest in Freemasonry is greatly increasing and well qualified young men are knocking at our door. It is our duty and our mission to act as a beacon of light to our community and the human society at large.

3. Grand Lodge Building: With all that is happening in our Grand Lodge and our place in Washington DC, as a premier Grand Lodge and as a highly qualified institution representing the Fraternity in our nations capital, we need to have significant presence in this city. Furthermore, our lodges have been increasing in number and they are pressed for lodge room to do their work and hold other Masonic and social events. To accomplish these goals, we ought to have a Masonic Center in a prominent location in the city with all the facilities and amenities needed for our manifold activities and easily accessible to our lodges and membership in general. My recommendation is that this project to be pursued in earnest by the incoming Grand Master in consultation with the trustees, as already authorized by the Grand Lodge, and upon identifying a concrete and financially viable project bring it to the floor of the Grand Lodge for approval and execution .

4. Changes in Grand Lodge Code: There are a number of instances in our code that are not compatible with our present circumstances. For instance, having changed the date of our Annual Communication from 2nd Saturday in December to 4th Saturday in October, we have about six weeks before the Third

Last, but certainly not least, my deep appreciation and thanks goes to the staff of Grand secretary’s office, WB Todd C. Duehring and WB Walter R. Hoenes, who have served me and this Grand Lodge with sincerity and dedication beyond the call of duty.

In conclusion, my Brethren, our Grand Lodge has gone through a great positive change in the last few years and you have witnessed our new vision, goals, continued on page 24

In Search of Light:

A Masonic Journey Akram R. Elias Deputy Grand Master

The Initiation My interest in Freemasonry goes back to the time when I was fifteen years old. I was fascinated by this mysterious institution that had attracted some of the greatest people from around the world, including some of my personal heroes. My work as a contractor with the U.S. Department of State prevented me from seeking membership in the Fraternity due to my heavy travel schedule. Upon leaving that work to start my own government consulting business and at the first opportunity, I “knocked at the door” of Freemasonry in Washington, DC. I will never forget the night of my initiation at Potomac Lodge No. 5. I felt the warmth, intimacy and mysteriousness of a Lodge room in the presence of dozens of Brothers performing a beautiful, solemn and rich ceremony. The chivalric motto “one for all, all for one” became my reality that evening; it was a true communion of Brotherhood. The date of my initiation was equally special and symbolic to me: June 18th – the anniversary of the famous “June 18th Call” of General Charles De Gaulle to the people of France to take a stand and resist Nazi occupation. What a feeling—to be initiated into the Fraternity of Light while celebrating the call of a beacon of light to stand up to the evil forces of darkness!

What Potomac Lodge instilled in me was the uniqueness of the Initiation experience and the paramount importance of Masonic ritual, which I was privileged to teach for a number of years. The “Sacred Art” was my first and most important discovery in searching for the essence and true nature of Freemasonry. I owe that discovery to my Mother Lodge and its members, especially Brother Dean Clatterbuck.

It was at a meeting of the Pythagoras Lodge of Research that I heard for the first time a very interesting and intellectually challenging paper presented by Brother Andre Kesteloot.

Having expressed to him the nature of my quest, he invited me to join Benjamin B. French Lodge No. 15, a Lodge that was being restructured along the lines of traditional Freemasonry under the leadership of Brother Kenneth Gibala. The quarries of BBF shaped much of my intellectual thinking about Freemasonry and taught me that being a Mason is a privilege, not a right. I owe so much to that Lodge and its members who honored me in 2001 by electing me as their Worshipful Master.

The “Sacred Art” was my first and most important discovery in searching for the essence and true nature of Freemasonry.

Seeking the Essence of Freemasonry Steve Trevino, the friend who sponsored my petition to Potomac Lodge, warned me, prior to signing my petition, that the state of the Fraternity had drifted away from its core mission and had become more of a social club which may cause my disappointment.

His warning was very accurate. I was thirsty for the knowledge, philosophical debates, fellowship experiences, and opportunities to make myself a better person in order to make a positive difference in this world. The more I searched for what made Freemasonry unique in this world, the more frustrated I became. I must admit that, at one point, I thought about leaving the Fraternity, but it was that powerful initial sense of joy and mystery that I felt on my initi-

I also was honored to befriend Brother Robert B. Heyat, an extraordinary Brother who became our Grand Master in 2007. I was struck by his vision and determination for he understood the unique role of our Grand Lodge as a bridge to Universal Freemasonry. I was deeply impressed by his hard work, humility and readiness to sacrifice for the cause of making our Grand Lodge open to building bridges of understanding around the world by forging closer ties with sister Grand Jurisdictions. He invited me to join La France Lodge No. 93 where I developed my interest in Universal Freemasonry and learned about the meaning of fellowship. I owe so much to this Lodge and its members who also honored me in 1999 by electing me as their Worshipful Master.

IN SEARCH OF LIGHT : A MASONIC JOURNEY

The Grand Line It was Brother Heyat who first approached me and encouraged me to run for the bottom of the line of the Grand Lodge. I weighed that decision very seriously and discussed it with my wife Lou who has always been a true partner and friend. Why should I do it?

Was it the prestige, the purple collar, another feather in my hat? In all honesty, these were not satisfactory reasons and very unappealing to me. What made me decide to go further was a very personal reason: Freemasonry had made me a better Man and a better American and I therefore felt indebted to the Craft and had to give something back! The deeper I dug into the teachings of Masonic symbolism, the greater appreciation I gained for the Great American Experiment.

The tighter the fellowship ties I forged, the stronger was my belief in the Universality of Man and the unique role of the Brotherhood in helping a Man become Sovereign.

Where else but in a Masonic Lodge can an Arab and Jew, Christian and Moslem, Armenian and Turk, come together in a spirit of fellowship, drink from the same cup of fraternity, and take upon themselves binding oaths of brotherhood for the benefit of humanity? Having discovered the true essence of Freemasonry, I felt the obligation to work for the strengthening, growth and development of this Noble Society.

• I also felt that I could not accomplish much for the Grand Lodge if my energies were dispersed allover the place.

• Finally, one cannot accomplish much in the year he is Grand Master unless he has been working hard along with others on building the Grand Lodge over the preceding seven years. Believe me Brethren, we have a lot of building to do.

The “journey” to the Grand East rather than the destination itself became the focus of my Masonic endeavors. Year after year, I worked hard with our succeeding Grand Masters supporting them on projects and ideas that would benefit the long term development of the Fraternity. What has guided me in deciding where to employ and invest my energies was a fundamental question that I always asked myself: what can we do together to gradually build our Craft, bring in quality members, increase the effectiveness of our Lodge operations, inspire our members to become leaders in their own communities, and give our Fraternity the respect and stature it is due in our society? The journey has been great to me and quite exciting. I have discovered so many points of light in our midst and have worked closely with them over the years to help energize our Fraternity in Washington, DC. I will never forget the numerous discussions, planning sessions, and strategy development exercises with those Brethren whose names require a separate page with the aim of reinvigorating and energizing Lodges such as Justice-Columbia Lodge No. 3, Naval Lodge No. 4, and Albert Pike Lodge No. 33. I will also forever cherish the strategy sessions held at the Melrose restaurant (now operating as the Blue Duck Tavern) with members of Cincinnatus Lodge No. 76, especially Brother Curtin Winsor, developing together national and international initiatives that could make a positive difference in people’s lives. I am also grateful to the wise guidance of Past Grand Masters such as Robert F. Drechsler, Charles S. Iversen, Theodore M. Kahn, Raymond F. McMullen, and Stewart W. Miner.

Having discovered the true essence of Freemasonry, I felt the obligation to work for the strengthening, growth and development of this Noble Society.

It was the Grand Master in 2000, Brother Mansour Hatefi, who afforded me the opportunity to be his Grand Marshal. What an extraordinary experience!

Being Grand Marshal was a great honor and a privilege; it has also been considered historically as a stepping stone for running for the bottom of the line.

I will forever be indebted to Brother Hatefi for appointing me to that office.

The Grand Journey The decision to run for the bottom of the line led me to resign my several offices in the various appendant bodies . There were several reasons behind that decision: • Lodges make Masons; no other body in the family of Freemasonry does. I decided to focus my energies on the Lodges that needed a lot of support and assistance.

A Moment of Reflection There is one important lesson that I have drawn over the years and would like to share with you. Weak continued on page 25

FROM THE GRAND SECRETARY

From the Grand Secretary TO: The Officers of the Grand Lodge, elected and appointed, Past Grand Masters, Grand Lodge Committee members, Grand Representatives of other Grand Lodges, to all Worshipful Masters and Secretaries of all lodges under the Jurisdiction of this Grand Lodge and the membership in general:

Be It Known that the 197th Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, of the District of Columbia, was held at the Scottish Rite Center on the 27th day of October, 2007.

As reported by the Credentials Committee, 31 (elected and appointed) Grand Lodge Officers, 13 Past Grand Masters and 3 Past Grand Officers were in attendance. Also 31 Masters, 28 Senior Wardens, 19 Junior Wardens, 20 Proxies and 81 Past Masters were present.

Reports At this session the Grand Master’s report was received for submission to the Jurisprudence Committee. Also the report of the Deputy Grand Master, including the 2008 Budget of the Grand Lodge, as presented earlier in the Call for the Annual Communication, and printed in the Report Booklet, was received and approved by the Grand Lodge.

The report of the Grand Secretary on the operations of his office indicated added emphasis on the use of current technology to enhance communication with constituent lodges, membership and public in general and to digitalize correspondence, receiving, tabulating and filing of lodge reports and record keeping.

Work and Casualties All of our 34 degree-conferring lodges were retained in 2007 and 2 new lodges were added, to bring the total of working lodges to 36, plus 2 special lodges to account 38 lodges all together. During the year, however, in spite of the relatively high number of raisings and affiliations, we suffered a net loss of 49 members, mainly owing to the number of withdrawals and NPDs, as well as the ever potent factor of death. Total membership of the Grand Lodge on September 30th, 2007 stood at 4,552.

Fraternal Recognition Acting on the recommendations of the Committee for Recognition and Fraternal Relations, the Grand Lodge voted to grant recognition to:

Grand Lodge of Slovenia – consecrated by the Grand Lodge of Austria in October 1999, and judged regular by the Commission for Information on Recognition of the Conference of Grand Masters of North America, in its annual meeting in the year 2000.

Grand Lodge of Ukraine – consecrated by the National Grand Lodge of France and the Grand Lodge of Austria on September 24, 2005 and judged regular by the Commission, in 2006.

Awards The Grand Master awarded three worthy Masons with the Valentine Reintzel Medal for Meritorious Service Brethren so honored were: Harry E. Echols, PM Albert Pike No. 33, Stephen Ohanian, PM, Hayastan Lodge No. 94, and Walter R. Hoenes, PM, Fraternity Lodge No. 54.

To honor a worthy and dedicated Master Mason for his long and distinguished service to this Grand Jurisdiction and the Fraternity, the Grand Lodge approved the Grand Master’s recommendation by acclamation to bestow the title of Honorary Past Senior Grand Warden on Right Worshipful Brother Harold Grainger.

Also on the recommendation of the Grand Lodge Awards Committee, WB W. Fred Gore, PM, SingletonHope-Lebanon Lodge No. 7, was elected to receive the Grand Lodge Distinguished Service Award, at the Third Communication, on December 8, 2007.

Legislation Adopted SEC. 83, Paragraph 3. No brother shall be installed Master of a Lodge unless he is able to open and close a Lodge in each of the three degrees consistent with the charter of the Lodge in an efficient manner and demonstrates proficiency in the Modes of Recognition of each of the three degrees and has a certificate to that effect issued by the Grand Lecturer, either on his own initiative or upon the recommendation by a member of the Committee on Work and Lectures.

The Grand Master may, if in his judgment the circumstances warrant, waive the requirement for such certificate.

PRESENTATION OF VALENTINE REINTZEL MEDALS AND SPECIAL RECOGNITION

Presentation of Valentine Reintzel Medals and Special Recognition The “Voice” takes pleasure in recognizing the most recent recipients of the Valentine Reintzel Medal: Worshipful Brothers Stephen Ohanian, Harry E. Echols, Jr., and Walter R. Hoenes. The exceptional worthiness of these recipients is only partly indicated by the citations read at the time of presentation by Grand Master Robert B. Heyat at the Grand Lodge’s Annual Communication on Saturday, October 27, 2007.

The Grand Master’s Citation for STEPHEN OHANIAN Worshipful Brother Stephen Ohanian was born in 1947 in the Yahyali village near Kayseri, Turkey. After completing three years of elementary education in Kayseri, he then moved to Istanbul, Turkey and completed elementary, middle and high school education in the Armenian schools in Istanbul. After graduation from high school, he passed the entrance exam and was admitted to Yildiz Technical University in Istanbul. He graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in mechanical engineering. Upon moving to the United States in 1976, he worked as a mechanical engineer until 1988 in the HVAC field. In 1988, he opened an auto body repair business which he operated until 2003. After receiving his Real Estate Sales Certificate in 2003, he began working as a Real Estate Agent. In August 2007 he returned to working as mechanical engineer.

Worshipful Brother Ohanian has two children: Sevan, born in 1980 and Natalie, born in 1982. Worshipful Brother Ohanian is an active member of St.Mary’s Armenian Church in Washington DC, served on the parish council for fours years, with two years as the council’s chairman and two years as its secretary. He is also active with the Washingtonian Tower Condominium in Gaithersburg, Maryland where he serves as a member on both the Energy and Social committees.

His Masonic activities are numerous: Worshipful Brother Ohanian was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason by Wm. R. Singleton-Hope-Lebanon Lodge No. 7 on November 9, 1996. Since then he has affiliated with Hayastan Lodge No. 94, serving as its Worshipful Master 2002 and also Nur Lodge No. 2000, serving this lodge as Worshipful Master in 2003.

Other Masonic memberships included Royal Arch Masonry, the Scottish Rite and the Eastern Star. In

2001 he served as High Priest for the Wm R. Singleton Chapter No. 4 of Royal Arch Masons.

Preferring to avoid the limelight, Worshipful Brother Ohanian can always be found busy behind the scenes, working tirelessly, yet quietly, on behalf of our fraternity. In recognition of his devotion and dedication to the Craft, it’s my honor and pleasure to present Worshipful Brother Stephen Ohanian with the Grand Lodge’s Valentine Reintzel Medal for Meritorious Service.

The Grand Master’s Citation for HARRY E. ECHOLS, JR. Worshipful Brother Harry Earle Echols, Jr. was born in Atlanta on May 9, 1947 and raised in nearby Decatur, Georgia. After graduating from Decatur High School in 1959 he served in the U.S. Army as a Russian and German linguist and intelligence specialist. Following his military service, Harry earned a B.A. from Oglethorpe College, a J.D. from Atlanta Law School and a M.S. in Management from the University of Utah. Harry joined the U.S. Department of Labor in 1968, receiving progressively more responsibility and assignments in the New York and San Francisco regional offices prior to moving, in 1981, to the Department’s headquarters in Washington, DC. Once in the nation’s capital, Harry joined the local Rotary Club, where he met William Eccleston, who Harry was told was the Sovereign Grand Inspector General of the Scottish Rite. Harry remembers that Dr. Eccleston’s title did not impress him—the man did. He watched him for several years and remembered other gentlemen whose lives had positively touched him. The common thread among the best of them was that they were all Masons. He soon asked Dr. Eccleston for a petition and began his Masonic journey.

Harry was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason in Albert Pike Lodge No. 33 on April 6, 1987.

He served as Master of that lodge in 1993. At the conclusion of Harry’s service in the East, the late Worshipful Brother Julius Gordon, who was the lodge’s Secretary at the time, wrote the following in lodge’s bulletin, The Albert Pike Globe: “I cannot let this last Globe of the year pass by without commenting on the great year Worshipful Brother Echols has had. He ran the lodge with enthusiasm, with spirit, and with the good of the

fraternity always in his heart. The lodge raised 16 members this year, and he personally sponsored four of them.

Harry found time to give his all to the lodge in spite of the fact that he is active in many, many other organizations such as the Rotarians, the Odd Fellows, the Scottish and York Rite bodies, and his church. Harry’s leadership is a great one for future Masters to follow and I congratulate him on his superior stewardship of this lodge.”

Since then, Harry has continued as a “Johnny Appleseed” of sorts for Freemasonry. His leadership and vision were instrumental in the creation of two additional lodges for this jurisdiction. Magnolia Lodge No. 53, chartered in 1996 gathers and makes Masons who are also members of the college fraternity: Kappa Alpha Order. On June 30th of this year, the brethren of Magnolia recognized Harry’s key role in the founding of that lodge by unanimously electing him as an Honorary Past Master.

Fraternity Lodge No. 54, where Harry served as its first Master and which was consecrated in 2001, emulates Magnolia Lodge but on a broader scale, gathering and making Masons having membership in any Greek-letter fraternal society. Today it is conservatively estimated that over 75 brothers have Harry Echols to thank for being the top-line signer on their petitions.

For his success in creating for this jurisdiction two outstanding lodges; for sponsoring and serving as a Masonic mentor for many of our brothers; and for his energy, passion, and dedication to the fraternity over two decades, it is my honor and pleasure to award Worshipful Brother Harry Echols the Valentine Reintzel Medal for meritorious service.

The Grand Master’s Citation for WALTER R. HOENES Worshipful Brother Walter Robert Hoenes was born in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York on July 12, 1964 to his parents, Walter and Virginia, and later raised in the leafy green suburbs of New Jersey. At the age of seven, Walter lost his father to cancer, and he soon began looking to his two grandfathers as male role models. These men were active Masons in their respective communities

and, by their examples over time, taught Walter the cardinal principles and tenets of Freemasonry. It was Walter’s love and appreciation for these men and their values, along with his great interest in history and ritual, which caused him to determine early on that he would one day like to become a Freemason.

In 1982, Walter arrived in the nation’s capital to attend the George Washington University. During his college years, where he studied international affairs, and throughout the 1980’s he was active in politics, working either for Congress, for political consultants, or for presidential election campaigns. Finally tiring of the political scene and ready to seek new challenges, he accepted a position with Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, working primarily in the rooms division and sales, and finally as regional director of the company’s frequent business travelers/guest recognition The Valentine Reintzel Medal program. of M. W. Bro. William Wallace Jermane (1916) In assuming the high station to which you have this evening elected me, permit me to speak a word of seriousness.

Our sixty–third Grand Master in point of succession was born at Cincinnati, Ohio, November 4, 1862. He was obligated to leave college before his graduation due to a lack of funds necessary to complete the final year. He spent the following years as a type-setter, pressman, job printer, reporter and editor of a number of local and national publications.

M. W. Bro. Germane, came to Washington in 1899, by way of Illinois, Missouri and Minnesota. He was raised in Charity Lodge No. 331 of St. Joseph, Missouri on November 12, 1886. He affiliated with Pentalpha Lodge No. 23 and became Master of that Lodge in 1905. He held high offices in almost all of the appendant bodies.

M. W. Br. Germane had a remarkably active and busy life, both professionally and fraternally, none of it perhaps in the year he was Grand Master. He brought to the office of the Grand Master a rich experience, a ripe Masonic knowledge, and an energy and enthusiasm almost without parallel in the history of our jurisdiction.

We stand at the opening portals of a new year. Whether it is to be a year of success or a year of failure, will depend ultimately not upon the Grand Lodge, nor yet upon the constituent Lodges, but upon the more than 10,000 Master Masons of the jurisdiction as individuals. We cannot do our best—our most important-Masonic work in the mass; we cannot do it by proxy, as, for instance, through committees and the Lodges. As a fountain can rise no higher than its source, so Masonry in this jurisdiction must measure its working efficiency by the individual loyalty of its adherents. If that is what it ought to be, no outside opposition, I care not what its origin or power, can impede our progress; but if it is not, no amount of effort on the part of our Masonic bodies as such can keep our forces in proper motion. In other words and this is the point I am trying to make—we must have not more of organization at the top, but more of consecrated devotion to duty at the bottom, if we are to justify, in a larger way, year after year, in the thought of this community, our right to exist as an institution.

Masonry with us has a record of glorious achievement, covering more than a century; but as I face the coming year, I turn away from that record, and call upon all my brethren to turn away with me. The past, with all that it has of glory, is secure, and does not need our attention.

What concerns us is the present moment. Let us live well all of the todays, and the tomorrows will crown us with benedictions, and in time become golden yesterdays.

I ask you to join me in a purpose to make the new year a year of peace, a year of progress, a year of renewed determination to raise our beloved fraternity to still higher levels of efficient service, Standing at the focal point of a great nation which today contains three-fourths of the regular Masons of the world; doing our work in the white light which beats down upon such a point, and with greater opportunities for development than are possessed by many of our brethren elsewhere, let us earnestly rededicate ourselves to service, and call upon Almighty God to make us more useful than ever before in the great work of establishing His kingdom in the hearts of men.

Early on Wednesday morning, October 3, Masonic Brethren assembled together in the Cannon House Office Building for a breakfast hosted by the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia. The purpose of the breakfast, which was attended by Members of Congress and staffers who are Masons, was two-fold: first, to foster more outreach between the Grand Lodge of D.C. and Masons on the Hill, and second, to enjoy fellowship with Brethren who do not always have time to attend a meeting.

BACK TO SCHOOL FUN FAIR

Back To School Fun Fair

Michael Webb, Senior Deacon, Naval Lodge No. 4 On Friday, September 28th, 2007, Naval Lodge No. 4 hosted the second annual “Back to School Fun-Fair”, a community event offering fun, food and amusements for more than 2000 school children and parents of the Capitol Hill Cluster School (CHCS).

The Cluster Schools consist of Watkins Elementary, Peabody Elementary and Stuart Hobson Junior High School, all located in our Capitol Hill neighborhood.

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) co-sponsored the event and helped organize parent volunteers, once again demonstrating the partnership between Freemasons and school leaders is effective and contributes to the success of the Fun Fair.

Freemasons have a long and successful philanthropic record working with hospitals and children’s programs to help improve our communities. Washington, DC was planned and established by Freemasons and Naval Lodge is leading by example by engaging other blue lodges in community through its contribution to community needs—specifically education and children’s safety. CHCS Principal Brandon Eatman said the Fun Fair creates an opportunity to “raise awareness about efforts to improve public education, as well as provide an environment for groups to engage parents and motivate them to take a more active role”.

The DC public school system has one of the highest per-student allocations of tax-dollars in the nation, and yet the system is among the poorest performing.

Naval Lodge freemasons are committed to helping build stronger communities and recognize the need to do more than raise awareness and provide a little fun for the community. Naval Lodge No. 4’s Senior Warden, Alan Patterson says, “simply raising money is not enough, we must also devise a system that puts the money where it is most needed. With our brethren who work for the school system and those

outside, I am confident that we will find the best solution. This is good and important work that fits the Craft, will help our community where it needs it most, and bring honor to Freemasonry”.

The event raised more than 3200 dollars which will be used to purchase specialized learning materials for the Montessori program, which are not funded by D.C. Public Schools. The Fun Fair also provided an opportunity for more than 200 parents and children to participate in the Masonic CHIP (Childhood Identification Program) a program providing parents and guardians the means to quickly get vital information to emergency responders and link to the national Amber Alert system. According to Patterson, “Masons in DC recognize that children’s safety and the need to improve the public schools in our city as two of the fundamental challenges of our times and the place in which we live.”

“The Back to School Fun Fair provides an opportunity to build on the Masonic philanthropic tradition and create opportunities for the community to come together for some fun and amusement,” according to Naval Lodge’s Junior Warden, David Johnson. “This is a foundation whereby the successful implementation of ‘Masonry in the Community’ can be realized further”, Johnson continues. “We can start by raising our voices as external advocates in the public system while we grow into raising funds to help.”

Businesses in the local community and the greater metropolitan DC area were contacted for sponsorship opportunities (monetary or in-kind donations).

Businesses were able to sponsor an attraction or amusement but for this initial effort, the bulk of the financial support for the project was provided by Naval, Anacostia and Washington Daylight Lodges and the Scottish Rite.

BACK TO SCHOOL FUN FAIR

The Fun Fair was held on the campus of Watkins Elementary School (420 12th St., SE) on the Friday afternoon beginning after school and ending at sundown—approximately 3:30 to 7:30 pm. Gratefully, after some early warnings of wet weather, Mother Nature calmed down and provided us with splendid afternoon and early evening weather.

The Fun Fair offered a variety of food and fun activities for the children of the CHCS. For example, there were two moon bounces, one for children ages 1-5 and another for children 5 and older. Other amusements included a dunk tank, an obstacle course and an assortment of small carnival games with prizes.

Each amusement was serviced with insurance, attendants, and volunteers. Tables were set up for the PTA, Montessorri program, CHIP and other volunteer organizations who wish to share information. The Shrine Clowns were on hand to bring laughter, smiles and happiness to the young and the old.

Special thanks to following organizations for their inkind donations: Las Placitas and Tiber Creek Associates for providing of 900 quesadillas, chips and salsa, which were enjoyed by all. Murry’s on H Street provided a discount on more than 1100 “great dogs”, which were all prepared and consumed at the event.

Marvelous Market gave a donation of 1200 brownies, and the Pepsi Bottling Group gave water which helped quench the thirst of Fun Fair participants; however it became evident that supplies were short.

The two cotton candy and popcorn carts helped round out the wholesome food offered at the event.

Also, to the many other volunteers from Naval and other Lodges who participated—you own this success.

Special mention should be made and thanks offered to all the other Masons who participated in the Fair—more than twenty five in total—and especially to the Grand Lodge officers who not only attended but took an active part in serving the food, manning the CHIP program, and contributing to the games. In attendance were the MW Grand Master, MW GL Secretary, and several Grand Lodge officers, including the Past Grad Master!

Their support is very much appreciated.

Each of us find meaning in devoting time to Masonic charity and relief; some may be absorbed by it and will be giving hours and days of his own time to it.

The brethren who made calls for donations and working on fundraising help strengthen the pillar of charity. This is what the ritual instructs us to do.

When the words are taken to heart and acted upon, they become alive and our craft has meaning. Masons are builders and our work is very much appreciated by our community.

Freemasonry therefore is a world, and not a monthly meeting, a fact signalized by the lodge room itself which symbolizes the world of mankind, and has the sky for its ceiling. I

GRAND LODGE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

Grand Lodge Leadership Conference Front Royal, Virginia, Sept. 7-8, 2007

Over 100 DC Freemasons gathered in beautiful Front Royal, Virginia for the 2007 Fall Leadership Conference

The Grand Lodge Leadership Conference took place in Front Royal as in past years; however, apart from a similar name it differed greatly from previous gatherings. As part of a comprehensive reorganizing of the work of the Grand Lodge, various aspects of work are now divided into two broad categories.

Category one is the continuation of the training workshops initiated this past year whereby the ritual and station-by-station work of all lodges is conducted through a series of workshops occurring over two weekends in 2007 and 2008.

Category two is a specific leadership training which is now the focus of the Front Royal retreat.

Front Royal developed three broad objectives: I. Overview and challenge of leadership in the context of basic Masonic principles; II. Focused review of specific blue lodge objectives achieved through senior officer interactions and commitments; III. Training sessions on principles of leadership.

Overview and Challenge of Leadership Most Worshipful Grand Master of Masons of the District of Columbia Robert Heyat opened the conference by explaining how Masonry blends into a harmonious whole the principles of philosophy, personal beliefs, truth, good, morality, and freedom.

MW Heyat stressed in particular that everyone needs to feel a relationship to something greater than oneself which is part of the core appeal of Masonry.

Effective development for a Mason is a matter of exercising proper qualities of leadership. And

leadership is doing what is right, based on knowledge and morality. MW Heyat cited several conditions for successful leadership but emphasized that the keys of success are knowledge that a goal is attainable and having the dedication of work ethic to achieving that goal. MW stressed that a Freemason and leader must make a difference by his actions.

The Deputy Grand Master Akram Elias focused the Heyat remarks into a action plan for the forthcoming Masonic year. RWB Elias stressed that both sides of “Freemason” must be understood—”Free” and “Mason”—one referring to knowledge, the basis of freedom, and other to the practitioner, or person who struggles against the timeless enemies of ignorance and despotism. In order to achieve that mission it is necessary to enlighten the membership, energize and engage the leadership. Elias stated that American Freemasonry stands at the cusp of a unique and great opportunity today. Masonry in general and specifically in the District of Columbia could play a key role in the struggle against ignorance and despotism saying that Masons would know they had achieved their proper place in society when the Grand Master was on the short list of important invitations in the city.

Focusing – Framing the Masonic Future in Washington The first working sessions were devoted to an interactive pursuit of commonality in the aspirations and goals of the leaders present at the conference. This part centered on what individuals thought were the

goals and objectives of Freemasonry in Washington and specifically how Freemasonry was unique from other organizations.

and live by example. (One of the ways to gain recognition is to live up to our own obligations vis à vis the community.)

During considerable floor discussion brethren came up with a list of twenty-five goals and objectives (many of which were simply variations on the same themes), and then presented both goals and means for achieving them. The core ideas and goals called for the need of more growth; greater relevancy, visibility and community participation; development of new ideas stimulating the membership and celebrating diversity. Possible means for achievement were thought to be projecting a better public image; dispelling the idea of elitism; overcoming inertia; moving outside old ways; leading by example; and changing the vision of Freemasons in Washington, D.C.

Education and the Community – RWB Akram Elias took the opportunity to explain several initiatives that the Grand Lodge had undertaken with respect to education in the District of Columbia, meetings held with educational authorities, and steps that had already been taken to involve Masons in the District.

The central idea of these discussions is to focus on six educational projects (individual schools, cluster schools, etc.) as determined in cooperation with the educational authorities. It is anticipated that by positioning our resources on a small number of problem schools a more significant impact could be achieved.

Discussions were ongoing about further initiatives that could be implemented.

Sovereign Grand Commander Seale, Sovereign Grand Commander McNaughton, Distinguished Guests of the Supreme Councils, Fellow Inspector Generals Honorary, Greetings, my Brethren: As Grand Master of this jurisdiction, as a resident of this city, as an American by choice, and as a Master Mason dedicated to the propagation of Masonry universal, I bid you welcome to your nation’s capital, a city which is, in truth, one of the wonders of the world, situated, planned, and developed by Masons over the course of our national history.

This city is the pride of every American. In it we find innumerable manifestations of American values to which men of every clime aspire.

Here Americans have eternally proclaimed their belief that every man, regardless of race, nationality, sect or opinion, has a right to strive for excellence.

Should you be in that group, I would call on you to invite a first-time visitor to join you in revisiting your preferred centers of Masonic interest. Many and varied, they all attest to the impact of Masonry on the development of this city and, more importantly, on what takes place here, in times of peace and in times of strife.

In fact, only three states, namely, Alaska, Hawaii, and Wyoming, have fewer members than the District. Those states without SGIG’s are served by Deputies.

In August 2007, upon nomination by the Sovereign Grand Commander, Ronald A. Seale, 33°, the Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for the Southern Jurisdiction of the United States, elected MWB Leonard Proden, PGM and 33°, as a member of the Supreme Council. He had served this jurisdiction’s Scottish Rite bodies as the council’s Deputy from 2005 to 2007. Under present law his term as Sovereign Grand Inspector General (SGIG) will continue until he vacates the office or until he attains his 80th birthday, whichever comes first.

INITIATION: THE JOURNEY BEGINS

Initiation:

The Journey Begins Editor’s note: Brother Omar Raschid, now a Master Mason, was initiated in October 2006 in Albert Pike Lodge No. 33.

In order to explain my interpretation and experience of the initiation, I must first explain my mindset at the time. I was initiated in October of last year. It was an interesting time for me. Limbo as they say, both spiritually and mentally. Mentally, I had graduated college and started my career. I was in-between two worlds, not yet ready to give up the indiscretions that youth forgives, yet old enough to be granted the responsibility and requirements of adulthood. This duality was nowhere near the mix of emotions I had spiritually.

I was too old to not have questions about God’s methods, but still too young to cynically deny his existence.

I believed in God. I knew he existed and he was there. But having been raised with heavy influences of Roman Catholicism, Islam, and even Judaism, I had many questions as to the path to salvation. Is there only one way, or are they like spokes on a wheel that led to a central point. Is there a separate Heaven or is everyone in the same place? If they are in the same place, then why are some considered superior to others? I pondered these questions and began searching philosophies that could reconcile the differences. Having written an essay about Masonry while a freshman in college, I knew of the basic principles of our Fraternal Brotherhood. It’s acceptance of all religions appealed to me. I was intrigued that men of all different faiths came together in a mutual desire to better themselves, and by extension the word around them. They set aside Dogmatic differences and instead came together through pure faith. These principles were attractive to me and I yearned to learn more. I was in this moment, as our illustrious Order says, “First prepared in my heart.”

The ritual itself served as a physical manifestation of my inner feelings. In my preparation as a Candidate, I was rendered totally dependent on one with whom I

was at that time unacquainted. The duality of my life again came into play. I did not yet feel like an adult, but felt too old to be a child. One foot firmly in each world, just as my then-current attire suggested. Yet I felt that I was being led in the direction of my inner-quest to find light. My spiritual journey had led me down many different paths, yet to choose a single one. I was astray unable to find the light that could satisfy my spiritual craving. At that moment, I was blind, both spiritually and literally. Little did I know that my meandering through the darkness would soon stumble upon light.

That total dependence began to symbolize my feeling of trust: Trust and faith in the guidance of my soon-to-be Brothers. Faith actually is the emotion that I would best use to describe my experience I no longer had the fear of unknown and soon came to realize that every other Mason had been initiated in exactly the same way. This realization calmed me. I felt that all that was taking place were part of an elaborate ritual that has taken place for centuries. Great men had blazed the path before me and I took trust in knowing that they would not lead me astray.

Every man sitting in the room had taken the same journey that I had just begun. I had faith that the path they walked was one of virtue and enlightenment.

The theme of faith further presented itself in a not-sosubtle way as soon as I found out that a book of faith from every major denomination was at the table, in addition to the square and compasses. I later reflected on this and truly felt that I had found what I was looking for: An Order that respected all faiths and directed that devotion into an unbiased and positive force for good. I believe that God wears many masks, and it seems his true face was that of The Supreme Architect of the Universe: A pure form of faith that relies not on rules and regulation, but devotion and belief. continued on page 26

In 2006, he was first appointed a Grand Lodge officer, serving MWB Albert McNair Smith, PGM and this Grand Lodge as Grand Advisor.

That friendly voice you hear answering the telephone at the Grand Lodge is likely to be Walter, who just over a year ago, joined the staff at the Grand Lodge headquarters, serving as Assistant to the Grand Secretary. His experience as a hotelier has served him (and now us) very well with his consistent focus on providing attentive, courteous and efficient service to everyone with whom he interacts, whether it be Grand Lodge officers, officers and members of our constituent lodges, brethren from other jurisdictions, or non-Masons requesting Masonic information.

Recognizing his special talents and his dedication to the Craft, it was an easy choice for me to appoint Walter as a 2007 officer of the Grand Lodge in the capacity of my Administrative Assistant. Wearing two hats at the Grand Lodge headquarters comes with many challenges, but Walter rises to the occasion every day, meeting all challenges and exceeding our expectations. Despite numerous claims on his time by other groups, including the Episcopal Church, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, he is always there for us when we need him. Quietly and cheerfully working behind the scenes to make us all look good and achieve great things, Walter has demonstrated himself to be a tremendous asset for DC Freemasonry.

And so it is my sincere pleasure and distinct honor to recognize Worshipful Brother Walter Hoenes for his hard work, steadfast loyalty, and faithful service and present him with the Valentine Reintzel Medal for meritorious service.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION: Grand Lodge unanimously elects Harold Grainger to the office of Honorary Past Senior Grand Warden The Grand Master’s Citation for HAROLD GRAINGER Born in Manchester, England, Worshipful Brother Harold Grainger came to Washington, DC in 1958 and was employed by the Washington Post until his retirement in 1984. He was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason on September 2, 1959. Over the years he has served our Fraternity in countless ways. In his several lodges he has served in almost every capacity, including many times over as a Worshipful Master or Secretary. He is an honorary member of more than just a few of our lodges. He has chaired or served as a member on many Grand Lodge committees and has represented his lodge or the Grand Lodge with Masonic associations such as the Masonic and Eastern Star Home Charities and St. John’s Mite. Additionally, Harold serves as a trustee of the Masonic Foundation of the District of Columbia. Recognizing his significant talents and dedication, many a Grand Master has appointed him as a Grand Lodge officer and twice as Grand Marshal. Did I mention that Worshipful Brother Harold is a recipient of both the Valentine Reintzel Medal (1988) and the Grand Lodge Distinguished Service Award (1989).

His accomplishments in the appendant bodies are equally impressive having served in many capacities

in the York Rite, including Grand High Priest of Royal Arch Masons of the District of Columbia in 1987. Harold has served leadership roles in Scottish Rite bodies and in August of this year was coroneted as a Sovereign Grand Inspector General, Honorary (33°). He holds membership in the National Sojourners, Royal Order of Scotland and the Red Cross of Constantine.

Worshipful Brother Grainger is very well know within and without this Grand Jurisdiction as a very fine ritualist, and is called upon by Masters of many lodges to take part in a degree or to give a lecture.

He always responds with enthusiasm. As an excellent, polished speaker, Harold is recognized as an invaluable resource for lodge programs.

Frequently he is called upon in times of sorrow to act a Master at Masonic funerals. As the driving force in Convass B. Dean Memorial Lodge, he follows through on our commitment to the families of our sojourning brothers. His daily practice of the tenets of brotherly love and his many visits to other lodges and Masonic functions has created very close and enduring friendships.

April 22, 1909 – Brother (and soon to be President) William Howard Taft entered the West Gate and was presented to the Worshipful Master of Temple Lodge, where he sat in the East for the first section of the Master Masons degree “…happy in tiled security, and in the comradeship of men who meet on the level, act by the plum and part upon the square”.

In 1912, WM William Carter Keene noticed that the attendance for the EA and FC degrees “was abysmal”, but recognized that the attendance at past Master Mason degrees was great, due to a lavish feast served after the conferral. Without previous hint, the Master invited the thirty brethren present for the Entered Apprentice degree (half visitors) to accompany him to the Fredonia Hotel “…where the most sumptuous repast in the history of the Lodge was served.” The next day, the answer given to inquiring absentees was the now infamous quote: “It is dangerous to miss a meeting at Temple Lodge!”

Thus began the root of our later Lodge tradition, to hold one stated communication and a one separate social gathering, each month, for fraternity and fellowship. TNC 32 members, to this day, continue to gather “on the second Monday” at various public establishments, member homes or other decided venues to share libation, sustenance, Masonic commitment and true fraternal camaraderie, with one another.

In 1922, Temple Lodge helped form Cathedral Lodge due to increasing membership and the desire to conform to the principals set forth by our original Master.

The two sister lodges remained separate until 1977 when Temple and Cathedral again merged to form what is known today as Temple Noyes Cathedral Lodge No. 32.

Any description of TNC 32 would be incomplete without mentioning three Masons who selflessly mentored our line officers for years: * W.B. William H. Rohrman, whose passion for excellence in Masonic Ritual was surpassed only by his commitment to teaching his fellow Brethren of TNC 32 not just words but also the meaning of Masonry.

His life was an example to three generations of TNC members of what is important and special about our Masonic Fraternity. In honor of W.B. William H. Rohrman, a medal bearing his name is worn by each

year’s Junior Steward as a reminder of the TNC tradition of learning the valuable lessons of Masonry through excellence in our Fraternity’s Ritual. We, at TNC, are indebted to “Brother Bill” for creating a culture of excellence in Masonic Ritual which continues to be the cornerstone of our Lodge. * W.B. Frank Seale, P.M., who met personally with line officers on Friday nights to teach ritual by word of mouth to many of our incoming officers. His mild mannered persona, congeniality and patient efforts will never be forgotten by those who knew him. * Grand Historian and Right Worshipful Brother Carl R. Levine, P.M., continued the tradition of W.B. Rohrman, and mentored, cajoled, scolded and taught several more generations of line officers to uphold the standards of ritual that have been the hallmark of TNC 32. We remain unaware of anyone who learned from Carl who did not come away a better man and Mason because of it.

In 2007, our membership remains strong with over 175 members. We have celebrated throughout our Centennial year with our traditional Master’s Roast (a significant and often ribald affair), a Valentines Day dance to honor our ladies for their understanding of our fraternal commitments, a Stated Communication where our own PM Alan L. Gordon gave a speech on the history of TNC 32, followed a month later by a speech on the “History of Freemasonry in America” given by our respected brother S. Brent Morris, 33.

In May, our brethren gathered for a bus ride around the District of Columbia to view and learn more about the Masonic Memorials and Masonic history of this great city. This historical tour was hosted by our own Brother Bill Garnett and topped off with a “rolling lecture” expertly performed by our friend and mentor RWB Akram R. Elias. We celebrated in April with a “Centennial Oyster Roast and Sporting Clays event” which may hereafter become a traditional affair. We plan to have a River Ride and family picnic in August as well as a Grand Centennial Celebration at Almas Temple in November. These fraternal events, along with our quiet charitable activities and increasingly youthful membership, will most certainly allow us to begin our 2nd century, secure in the knowledge that the Masonic principals we hold dear will lead us proudly into the future. I

already involved somewhat and there is an initiative underway with American University.

Internal Education and Freemasonry Awareness – Ritual instruction has become a focal point of the leaders within the entire DC Lodge system. Discussions led to the decision that each lodge needed to appoint a liaison person(s) to be responsible for Masonic history and education. Such contacts were deemed necessary in order to relay instruction and course material to the lodges from the central source of the Grand Lodge.

Deputy Grand Lecturer Chip Mahaney stated that he would like to see a greater emphasis on creating ritual certificate holders, saying that he envisions 10-12 people qualified by 2010 thereby spreading the weight of instruction throughout the system.

Brotherhood and Obligation – Group consensus indicated that greater stress should be placed on brotherhood and obligation within the lodges with more emphasis being placed on the fraternal aspect of lodge membership. “We are our “brothers keepers,” as the old adage says, but we have not paid enough attention to obligation as attested by many present at the conference. Such obligation includes informative and substantive reminders and explanations of such organizations as the Grand Lodge Foundation or the activity of MESH. Commitments and Focal Points: Moving past the “talking stage” and towards “action,” the Brethren agreed to bring back to their respective lodges the following: 1. Education – project of adopting a public school to be identified by December 15, 2007 2. Lodge Development – the names of a ritual instructor and educational instructor to be identified by December 31, 2007. Work to begin in January, 2008.

3. Outreach – to a civic organization by December 3.

4. Adopt a university fraternity by May, 2008.

5. Brotherhood Obligation – get to know every Brother in Lodge by the first Communication of Executive Meeting following installation.

Leadership Course A second and highly important part of the conference was the facilitation of a brief leadership training course by the well-known author, trainer and Brother Dan Goldberg who is the author of a well respected book Lighten up and Lead (AuthorHouse: Bloomington, IN, 2007). Using the techniques outlined in the

book, Brother Goldberg led the group through a process of self-examination using standard leadership training materials in order to identify leadership traits. Most of the training was in the nature of selfevaluation and self-knowledge.

As a time-saver, much of the book was paraphrased; but his training book is a good place to begin the process of self-learning leadership core principles.

The basis for this approach is realizing that the key to leadership is an understanding of oneself first, then recognizing specific behavior traits in others. To create group participants and delegation, one must first place the request into the other person’s world. Only when the other person take possession and embraces it as “his own” will the task be accomplished and the energy of the group be increased thereby.

Among the analytical techniques, for instance, was an exercise to determine if the people leaned toward the introverted or extroverted style of leadership. There being no sharp break between the two poles; many people have some traits of each but Goldberg emphasized that several identifiable characteristics can be associated with each type. Leaders should learn to determine which members of their leadership team fall within each quality and gauge the work assignments and tasks accordingly. Another useful tool was used in determining if a person leaned toward the theoretical or the utilitarian—what motivates them and which tasks are best suited to each type.

More trait delineations of leaders and those they seek to lead were covered in sessions dealing with a behavioral self-assessment, attitudinal self-assessment, and a review of the seven elements of successful leadership (communications, managing change, setting goals, time management, team building, delegation, and motivation). Brother Goldberg prepared a thorough training manual that included several templates for project and personnel management. It should be possible for anyone interested in the conference but unable to attend to acquire or consult a copy at the Grand Lodge.

Lighten up and Lead is a text containing very useful approach and includes a multitude of templates which, together with the course materials, could be used within the lodge for leadership activity including several example sheets for use in training exercises.

In conclusion, it is interesting to note that many members at the leadership conference came with the continued on page 26

M. W. Bro. Stewart W. Miner’s 50th Masonic Anniversary Remarks by M. W. Bro. Edmund Cohen, Grand Master of Masons in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Thursday, November 15, 2007 Let me begin by welcoming each of you to this wonderful occasion sponsored by Cherrydale Lodge No. 42 and Andrew Jackson Lodge No. 120, and thank our distinguished Brethren from the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia for coming here to add to the honors which are so clearly due our dear Brother Stewart Wilson Miner.

As we begin I am reminded, and I’m sure you too have noticed that too many of our public figures are heavy on press releases and light on performance, they boast more often than they achieve, and they seem to take credit for when the sun shines and the rains stop.

Masons, on the other hand, are by nature and tradition modest and understated. And Most Worshipful Stewart Wilson Miner, who we are here to recognize, is a man who has done much and bragged little. He is a worker who is always there to encourage, to help, to step up and lead, and often to shoulder the burden and do the lion’s share of the work.

Of course, when you consider what those positions entailed in time and commitment, and hard work, and when you reflect upon what Most Worshipful Miner accomplished in each of these high offices, you begin to understand what these titles really signify, and you begin to gain some appreciation of his contributions to Freemasonry over so many years.

But those of us who know Most Worshipful Miner, and that includes many in this room, understand that the true measure of this Brother is so much more than the sum of his titles.

There is so much we could say, but I think three characteristics capture the essence of this Masonic leader. The first is his warmth and humility, the second is his scholarship, and the third is his contribution as a Masonic speaker. Any one of these would be sufficient to excite our admiration, but together they are truly inspiring.

greeting. You knew he really cared when he quietly asked about your health and your family.

And what won your affection for this quiet and gentle man was his genuineness and humility. It set you at ease and let you know that you were talking with someone who was your friend and Brother—nothing more, nothing less. You forgot his Grand titles, and knew immediately that he was a grand human being.

It was not just what he accomplished in his various offices that you appreciated, it was also his behavior and demeanor out of office that won your respect. It was not just what he did for the Craft, but what he did for each of us. He was always ready to share his time with us, to share his thoughts and insights, and to make us feel better.

And finally, we come to his reputation as a Masonic speaker. Over the years, he has been invited to be the keynote speaker at so many Lodges and other events.

He was expected to carry the meeting with an original and thoughtful program. It was a high wire act, but he delivered each time. And again, the measure of the man is the effect he had upon us in the audience. He has an elegant way of expressing himself. He educated us, he inspired us, he motivated us, and yes, he entertained us. His talks were always appropriate to the occasion, and always more than Grand Master Heyat presents M. W. Bro. we expected.

If you have been privileged to read some of his many writings on Freemasonry, you saw yet another side of this good Brother. You began to appreciate his well-deserved reputation for Masonic scholarship. His skill at research led to important insights into our Masonic history and traditions. And he shared those insights with us in his many articles on Freemasonry. As a result of his efforts we learned a lot about our Craft; and as a result of reading his articles, we developed a thirst to learn even more.

If you simply ignored his accomplishments in office, and his personal interactions, and just read all that he wrote about our Fraternity, you would, on that score alone, be very impressed with his contributions to Freemasonry.

But again, the measure of the man is not what he did in his own name, for in addition to being a gifted writer, he is a skillful editor. And behind the scenes, his editing

So now, as I call Most Worshipful Miner to the East to receive the recognition that is his due as a 50 year Masonic veteran, I say we have with us tonight a true and faithful Brother who has, during these 50 years, been a real craftsman. A Brother who has sought with much success to become a perfect Ashlar, and who along the way encouraged so many of us, by his example, to become better men and better Masons. Most Worshipful Miner, you have been a role model for me and for so many others. You have so clearly demonstrated that Freemasonry is all about virtue and honor.

And it is, therefore, a great privilege for me to able to present you with your 50-year Masonic pin, certificate, and dues cards. I

mission and programs and the change in many of our lodges. Furthermore, our Grand Lodge occupies a prominent position and a source for emulation, here in the United States, and around the world. We are now at a juncture. Interest in Freemasonry is greatly increasing and well qualified young men are knocking at our door. MESH SUPPORTS OUR TROOPS

MESH Supports Our Troops In October the Masonic and Eastern Star Home Charities, Inc. (MESH) made a very generous contribution to the Masonic Service Association of North America (MSA) in support of Operation Phone Home.

leadership keeps us down. We must constantly endeavor to elect qualified members to positions of leadership in our respective Lodges and especially our Grand Lodge. The secret of Freemasonry’s success over the ages lies in the fact that it is a meritocracy. Individual merit – rooted in accomplishments and not accumulated titles, leadership by example and not by edict, vision that inspires and not depresses, readiness to sacrifice, and willingness to dare – should be the basis for electing someone to a position of trust and leadership.

Freemasonry is truly fortunate to have a brother of such outstanding quality and dedication, and we have profited immensely from his wisdom and leadership.

His infinite devotion to the Craft and his evergenerous conduct toward his fellow man within and without the lodge is of the highest degree. It is for these reasons, and many more, that I take great honor and pleasure in moving that the Grand Lodge recognize the faithful service and outstanding achievements of WB Harold Grainger by electing him to the office of Honorary Past Senior Grand Warden. I

The use of the Goldberg book could well provide that opportunity in the future for specific lodges to undertake their own “retreat” for the purpose of self-examination and training as it is specifically designed for that purpose. The next part was the best, when everything became clear; I had the feeling that I had come out of total darkness and was seeing everything in a way I had not seen before; as if I was experiencing light for the first time; a shining light illuminating the path that I had so desperately been searching for; a path that motivates man to seek out God on his own, rather than being told to; a path that asks you to define God for yourself, rather than telling you what he is; a path that hinges on self-education and constant self-improvement rather than superficial lip-service.

Many Brothers stayed long after the speeches were over and food was gone to finish their conversations (as well as start new ones). I think I speak for all of the Brethren in attendance when I say that the fellowship enjoyed was fantastic, the speeches that were made were inspiring, the connections that were created were extremely valuable, and the overall experience was one that is already desired again. Numerous times throughout the morning we were reminded that no matter whom one is in the “profane” world, we all meet “on the level” as Brothers.

I had found a home. The void that I had previously felt had been filled with an overwhelming sense of tranquility. The spiritual torrent of my mind had calmed to a tropical sunny day. I felt as though I had been reborn. The cynicism of my years had been stripped away. I was once again innocent; just as the lambskin apron I wear signifies. I am a blank slate ready to learn. I now wear my innocence with pride. I

It should be noted that a moment of silence was held for late Brother Representative Paul Gillmor, 33rd Degree, who passed away on September 5, 2007.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family. I
